While it is hard to say goodbye to the sunny days of Hot Girl Summer, there is nothing more relaxing than that first day of overcast skies and wafts of chilly air to get you in cozy-mode, and even Megan Thee Stallion herself acknowledge it: goodbye summer, hello #hotnerdfall. If you’re one of many who just can’t wait to begin the seasonal festivities, read on: here are some hacks to truly become the best #hotnerdfall you can be.
Embrace The Weather Yes, it’s cold here. Yes, it rains way too often. Why spend your time complaining about the rainy season when you could accept the reality and harness it as a tool? I’m not talking building rain catchers or anything, but throwing on a classy pair of rainboots or splurging on new fenders for your bike could go a long way in appreciating Oregon weather rather than trying to battle it. You can love the colorful autumn leaves, but you gotta love the rest of it too.
Add A Moody Filter Don’t you ever wish you could slap a filter on real life? Well, in some ways, you can. Switch out staples of your home (blankets, throw pillows, candles or table accents) for darker versions in tones like rich reds, blues, greens or accents like gold and silver. It may seem like a small adjustment, but changing your environment to match the vibe can go a long way in you feeling the seasonal spirit. The same can go for your wardrobe; ditch the bright colors and loud patterns for solid colors and earth tones. This will be complementary to the environment around you and help you embody hot nerd fall.
4
Live By The Plaid, Die By The Plaid
There is no fabric or pattern that screams autumn quite like plaid does. This is a fast-track to not only looking hip with the season, but also maximizing the vibe of fall. Stock up at a local thrift store on a few trusty flannels (yes, you need more than one) or check home goods stores for a classy new plaid throw to add to the living room. Don’t be afraid to get crazy with it though; plaid shirts, skirts, socks, and even accessories are not only common but totally cool and are perfect for spicing up an outfit.
Being in School is Cool It can be difficult to feel motivated to get back into the swing of the school year, but it’s important to not let it start your year on a bad foot. Prepare yourself appropriately for the term to come in whatever way is most appropriate for you, not only by stocking up on necessities (books, pencils) but also in gearing up mentally (eating regular healthy meals, waking up earlier in the morning). Nourish your body and mind so you can nourish your GPA later. The Stallion made herself clear in emphasizing the nerd of hot nerd fall: don’t let her down.
be the fall
Bring Outside, Inside. For one reason or another, some of the best (and most affordable) ways to celebrate fall is by bringing all that good, fresh nature inside your home. Mini pumpkins are perfect for coffee tables, counters and front porches, whereas pinecones can spice up a decorative basket or act as a cute wreath on the front door. Fall leaves (when collected at the right time before becoming too wet) can be made into hundreds of different crafts, or layered in mason jars for simple pops of seasonal color around the house or car.

Ducks with an Appetite Words by Sophie Bange | Photos by Janie Velarde College students work hard, and we need to eat; luckily, there is an amazing selection of restaurants within a few blocks of campus! Students returning to school may have already visited some of these tried-and-true campus staples, but we’d be surprised if you’ve managed to try them all. For those who are new to Eugene, now is the time to begin your food tour of the city. Here’s your guide! Key: V = vegan, VG = vegetarian, GF = gluten-free
Izakaya Jinsei 1249 Alder St.
This restaurant featuring small plates of Japanese cuisine opened in late spring of last year, so some students may have missed it before leaving Eugene for the summer. It is actually the relocated Izakaya Oyazi, which had been on E. 5th Avenue, a distance from campus. The new location on Alder is not only more convenient for students, but features some new menu items, making it the perfect place for students who were Oyazi regulars and those looking to try something new.
(VG options)
Excelsior Inn Ristorante 754 E 13th Ave.
Nestled between Smith Family Bookstore and Duck Sushi on 13th, this upscale restaurant is a hidden oasis among the off-campus bustle. The menu of pastas and seasonal fish is definitely on the steeper side, so reserve a table for the most special of occasions - or whenever the parents are in town! For a more affordable treat, stop by for one of their house-made desserts. Trust me, the tiramisu is well worth the splurge.
(VG options)
Studio One Cafe
(V, VG options)
1473 E 19th Ave If you don’t live on the east side of campus, you might miss this small-but-mighty breakfast and lunch spot. While they do offer brunch favorites like omelettes, pancakes and biscuits and gravy, Studio One’s main specialities are their benedicts. The Field of Dreams benedict offers ham, spinach and eggs topped with gravy; Zorro’s Pride is uniquely made with corn polenta cakes, eggs, salsa and cheese; and the Northern Lights benedict is made with smoked salmon, spinach, tomatoes and of course, Hollandaise. Hungry yet?

Hey, Neighbor! Pizza House
(V, VG, GF options)
1621 E 19th Ave With all the free pizza being handed out around the beginning of the school year, you may get tired of the regular combination of bread, cheese and pepperoni - but Hey, Neighbor! is not like the rest. This small, intimate pizza house opened just over a year ago and features authentic pizzas with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. They also have a delicious selection of appetizers, salads and sandwiches, along with a great drink selection.
Espresso Roma 825 E 13th Ave.
If you’re new to the University of Oregon, it’s only a matter of time before you find yourself at Espresso Roma. Just a few steps off campus, this locally-owned coffee shop is the ideal spot to meet with classmates and work on a group project or hunker down for a solo study session. It’s not all work and no play, however; the covered back patio is a great place to catch up with a friend, rain or shine. Espresso Roma offers just about every espresso concoction under the sun, smoothies, pastries, sandwiches and more.
Rennie’s Landing 1214 Kincaid St.
Students voted Rennie’s Landing for best pub food and best trivia for Best of Campus 2019 - what more convincing do you need? Friends of all ages can indulge in burgers, sandwiches and other pub food favorites until 8pm, but it’s 21+ after that. Whenever you’re able to stop by, be sure to get an order of their famous tater tots - but don’t wait too long, because they’ve actually sold out before! Yes, they’re that good!
(VG, GF options)
(V, VG options)
1200 Oak St.
The Sandwich League
You’ll hear plenty of buzz about Tasty Thai right next to campus, but Ta Ra Rin is well worth the hop, skip and jump away. Their extensive menu offers noodles, stir fries, curries, and specials; and the heaping servings which are sure to make at least a meal and a half. Take advantage of the lunch specials for $10-13, on weekdays before 3pm. If you need a pick-me-up, be sure to order a Thai tea or Thai iced coffee (sub coconut milk to make it dairy-free)!
Tucked around the corner from the Starbucks on 13th, you may miss this delicious lunch spot. Everything on the Sandwich League’s budget-friendly menu is under $11, and they don’t charge extra for veggie patties on their burgers like many restaurants do. For the carnivores out there, all of their meats are grass-fed and all-natural, and you can add bacon to anything on the menu for $1 a slice.

Fall in Love with Your Decor Words by Chandini Bassett | Photo by Lauren Bruce
When the month of October rolls around, the air starts to smell crisp and everybody feels the need to get cozy. The most obvious ways to start loving Oregon's beautiful fall season are drinking pumpkin spice lattes, snuggling into your favorite sweater, and binge watching Stranger Things but the best way to welcome the season is to invite fall into your very own space. Below I'll share my 8 favorite ways to do this.
DOOR DECOR If you want to show off your seasonal spirit to those who don’t enter your house, focus on decorating your door. Door decorations can be a pleasant surprise to friends, strangers or even the mailman. If you’re new to the University of Oregon, this can be a great tip for freshmen who are living in the dorms or transfer students trying to spice up their new apartment. Personalizing your door can be fun, and best of all, cheap! For a door that’s a little more sophisticated, you can purchase an orange and red wreath to hang on the door. After that, line your doorstep with mini pumpkins to create an inviting entryway. To create a more eerie door, head on over to Target or Hobby Lobby to find a witch or Dracula hanging door cover. You can add fake blood and spider webs to scare any trick-ortreater (or passerby)!
LIGHTS Light fixtures are one of my favorite ways to brighten up dark spaces in my room, literally and aesthetically. For my style, I am a fan of edison bulbs as opposed to Christmas lights. They give off a warm yellow glow that spreads across your whole room. Lights are an excellent way to battle feeling the chill during the cooler seasons, and hanging these in your home is an easy way to cozify your room within minutes. For placement, I suggest stringing lights over your bed to create a warm tone when the nights are cold. Another prime light spot is around your mirror; it will reflect them, not only brightening your room but also providing great photo lighting. My favorite and most affordable pick is Room Essentials “Clear Globe Lights” from Target.

FALL 2019
CANDLES The thing I adore most about fall is the irresistible scents it’s known by. As soon as October hits, I head out to go shopping for candles and wax melts. In autumn, there are two ways to go with scents: cozier warm tones, such as pumpkin spice, apple pie and roasted marshmallows; or for a lighter scent, I lean towards french vanilla, fallen leaves or brown sugar and cinnamon. The best place to get candles is Bath and Body Works. They have a wide array of scents and styles, and you can test all of them! If you want to go for a more environmentally friendly approach, you can opt for soy candles or wax melts. You can find these soy products at Hirons or Home Goods.
BEDDING Let’s be real, the switch up you’ll notice most for fall is your bedding. Starting with sheets, head to your favorite home goods store and purchase some flannel sheets. The flannel texture will have you sinking into your bed while its nippy out, or opt for a new heated blanket or plushy pillow. Another way to bundle up is adding a few fuzzy throws to the top of your bed or in the living room, perfect for going into winter and keeping your feet warm.
SPOOKY DECORATIONS My favorite part of autumn is, of course: Halloween. I love all things sparkly and all things spooky, so it’s a given that it shows in my home. You can never go wrong with window and wall decals. Picking pumpkins or bats to display on your walls or windows is just the beginning of channeling your spooky spirit. If you want to go the distance, I suggest buying fake spider webs and stringing them over orange or purple lights. This transforms your room into a space even Dracula would love.

The
ULTIMATE College Shopping List College Shopping List Words & Photos by Lauren Bruce
Office supply and department store lists may have their own ideas for college essentials, but where better to get your shopping list than from experienced college professionals? We’ve been through the college wringer, so here’s a truly honest list of things you’ll need for your first year or your fifth year.
Industrial strength, wholesale supply of tissues No one who’s ever taken an accounting class has made it through the whole term without crying, unless they are a big liar. So one important item to pick up would be a year’s worth of tissues, preferably reinforced. Somewhere between one to one and a half pallets should do the trick. Keep a box in your backpack, beside your bed, in your car, in the bathroom and if you have extras, pass them out after your hardest final. I can absolutely guarantee you will either make a friend or not make a friend doing this.
14
A set of Scooby Doo bed sheets It’s a conversation starter after a Bumble date for one thing, but also, Scooby Doo themed bed sheets are a way to bring a little bit of your inner child out as you start your path to adulthood. You’ve moved out of the house, you’re in your new apartment or dorm and after a long day of classes or drinking you can crash onto the plush face of your childhood friend. Who’s the adult now, Scooby Doo? (not you).
Every White Claw you can find There’s a claw famine, so be sure to pack at least one suitcase of entirely White Claw seltzers as self defense. Even if they are lime flavored, the most detested of all White Claw flavors, be sure to bring these along. That way when a frat bro asks to trade one of his Truly seltzers for one of your White Claws, you can simply hand him a lime one without giving up one of your precious Claws from your stash. There’s no better way to make friends in college, than by sharing seltzers with one another. For those under 21: repeat above steps, but with LaCroix.
Your highschool sweetheart While it may seem like you’re not going to have time for a romantic partner when you’re first starting college and long distance is hard, this could not be farther from the truth. You’ll absolutely need your partner from highschool throughout college to remind you why you left home.
Travel-sized financial dread Nothing goes better with the excitement of a fresh year of college than just a small bottle of worry you can keep in your pocket. Pull it out at parties, during an exam, or while online shopping to remind yourself that you shouldn’t be having fun, you should be concerned about the future.
$200 textbooks you’ll use once, and sell back for $1 Arguably the most crucial item you’ll need in college is the textbook(s) you paid hundreds of dollars for, but won’t have time to read, and then opened once before searching for the study guide answers on Quizlet. Remember, always check with the professor on the first day before buying all your textbooks, just in case the nonreturnable textbook you just spent $150 was added to the syllabus by accident. Unlike most items in perfect condition, unfortunately the buyback price for textbooks is about 5 percent of what you bought them for.

CELEBRATING SPOOKY SEASON Words by Kimberly Harris | Photos by Kimberly Harris
The month of October gives us beautiful autumn days and long, dark nights — so commence ghostly decorations, cozy clothing, warm drinks, comfort food and anything spooky. Whether you’re a day tripper or nocturnal creature, Eugene has places to enjoy the spooky season. The best way to enjoy spooky season is with seasonal treats, haunted houses, corn mazes, pumpkin patches and Halloween preparation.
Mad Batters This Alice in Wonderland inspired bakery is a must to check out because of its kooky and comfortable atmosphere. The owner thrifted and hand painted furniture to decorate the shop like you’re about to have a tea party with the Mad Hatter. Pastries, chocolates and cookies are made from scratch in the kitchen downstairs. The full espresso bar upstairs offers locally roasted coffee and tea to go along with a baked good. During October, the shop will be doused in Halloween decorations as well as offer a skeleton inspired treat. 777 River Ave, Eugene OR 97404
16
Hours: Monday through Friday from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. and Saturday from 9:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M.
Spirit Halloween ‘Tis the season for Halloween stores to pop up in our area. Spirit Halloween has anything you need for the 31st: decorations, costumes, make-up and knick-knacks. Spirit Halloween is a one-stop-shop for all things spooky. Shopping there can be spendy, but if you google ‘Spirit Halloween coupons’ there’s a chance you’ll find a 10% to 20% discount in-store or online. 293 Valley River Center, Eugene OR 97401 Hours: 10 A.M. to 9 P.M. Monday to Saturday and 11 A.M. to 7 P.M. Sunday.
Goodwill Sometimes the best costumes cost the least, and thrifting is a good way to avoid spending too much money on Halloween. Goodwill offers a section of gently used costumes throughout October or get creative and put a costume together with whatever you can find while hunting through the racks. 855 Seneca Rd Building 3, Eugene, OR 97402 + 1010 Green Acres Rd A, Eugene, OR 97408 Hours: Open Monday through Saturday from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. and Sunday from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M.
Equiano Tasting Room In between the muddiness of fall there are still sunny days to enjoy. When it’s time to enjoy the crisp air Equiano has a warm drink and open seating to help. This local coffee roaster offers blends from Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala, Vietnam and [Cameroon.] The outdoor seating behind the shop is the perfect place to sit and chill in the autumn atmosphere and even if it does rain there is a covered area to stay dry under while you sip your drink. 300 Blair Blvd, Eugene, OR 97402 Hours: Monday through Saturday 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. and Sunday 9 A.M. to 5 P.M.

Participants are encouraged to dress up like wizards, play Hogwart themed games and drink a free glass of butterbeer at the Farm store. Adult tickets can be purchased there for $10 a piece. 36777 Wheeler Rd, Pleasant Hill, OR 97455 Hours: Fridays and Saturdays throughout the month of October at 7 P.M. to 10 P.M.

FALL 2019
Moving Up, Moving In
Getting out of the Dorms
Words by Skylar Anderson | Photo by Skylar Anderson It’s that time of the year again. Students are rushing back to campus, some eager and others not so much, for a fresh start with a brand new term. As freshmen begin to roll into Eugene, cars packed full of brand new items for their dorm, many returning students are doing the same, but instead; are planning to furnish an apartment or house for the first time. Making the transition from living in the dorms to off-campus can be tricky, especially if you’re not exactly sure what you should buy and what you should toss. But don’t fret, we’re here to tell you what items you should consider picking up if you are moving to a new offcampus place and the remnants of your old dorm you should probably get rid of.
Goodbye Mini Fridge
Hello Pots and Pans Toss the Cables Get a Streaming Stick
Let’s face it, that mini fridge was definitely worth it during your first year in the dorm. It was the place to store all your favorite late-night snacks, that dreamy cold water bottle after a night out and leftover food from the dining halls or take-out. Now that you're ready to move into a bigger place, that means a full-sized fridge and no need for your tiny one anymore. Since you will no longer be eating at the dining halls and most-likely cooking your own meals, it’s a good idea to invest in a nice set of pots and pans. Don’t worry, the microwave will always be there, but nothing beats a home-cooked meal.
Ditch the Shower Shoes
Pick up a Bath Mat
Rejoice! You no longer have to share a shower with a ton of people. Of course, this does not mean you shouldn’t protect your feet still while bathing. Sure, you no longer have to wear those annoying sandals while in the shower. But I would recommend buying a bathtub mat to not only help against slips and falls but to also help protect the bottom of your tub from rust and yellowing. You and your landlord will be grateful later when the shower shows no signs of damage.
For those who didn’t have a television in their dorm room, most utilized the common room’s TV. The only inconvenience was when you and/or your friends wanted to watch Netflix, someone had to drag their laptop out and plug in that good ole’ HDMI cable, creating a mess of cords and the disruption of having to get up every time to change what was on the screen. The best part about living off-campus is that the TV is either all yours or shared by only a couple of people, not a whole floor. This means freedom! Buying a streaming stick like a Roku or FireStick allows you to skip the hassle of dealing with pesky cords and lets you stay cuddled in that perfect position on the couch while being mobile when needed.
Scrap the Desk Organization
Look for Storage Organization
Making sure your desk was organized in your dorm room may have been a priority when moving in. But moving into an off-campus place means prioritizing other things like storage. Instead of worrying about where you are going to store your pens and pencils, instead, consider where you are going to store all those textbooks you’ve accumulated over the terms. Items like cube organizers, shelving units, or even storage ottomans can create even more space to store all those things you don’t immediately need all the time. Not only are these items practical, but they can also help spruce up your space as they come in a variety of colors and designs! FALL 2019

being the best you, Come January, journals and social media alike will be flooded with resolutions to become a better you: hitting the gym, eating right, calling your grandma more often. Yet, despite this annual ritual and it’s popularity, we continue to exist as humans with needs and mess-ups that rage on past the faded weeks of the new year, often times ignoring those needs in the wake of the mess-ups. In order to truly set yourself up for success, it’s important to maintain norms as an individual for how you are going to live your day to day life. Check out these tips on how to set goals for yourself, form healthy habits and learn to make time for yourself.
positive affirmations
At first, it feels a little silly looking yourself in the mirror and declaring what a great day you’ll have, but you just gotta trust me on this one: affirmations are healing, productive and will help you to create a routine that revolves around knowing yourself. This can be done in a few different ways, so experiment with styles and find what feels good for you. Popular methods include telling yourself affirmations in the mirror, placing sticky notes with affirmations on them in places you’ll notice or even writing them down the night before so you can reference them throughout the next day.

maintain a calendar
...of some kind
This can be a hard habit to form, but once you do it successfully, I promise that everything will become just a little bit easier. It’s been proven that having an organizational structure to your plans not only helps you with time management, but alleviates stress and other anxieties too. Find a calendar format that works for your style (digital, planners, wall or desk calendars) and then start small: include doctor appointments, work schedules, and major holidays. As you adjust, try slowly incorporating other items that might weigh on your mind like due dates, birthdays or even fun events you want to check out.
Self Care
mental health check-in
College is stressful, and it’s easy to let yourself become bogged down with stress, fatigue of the mind and body and even the emotions of the people around you. Make a routine with yourself of allowing time to breathe, relax in whatever way works for you and provide your brain space to detoxify the rest of the world once in a while. Ask yourself how you’ve been feeling, where those emotions might come from, and how you can best provide for your body and mind; comfort food, a warm shower or bath and indulging in a hobby is a great place to start. If you are able, it’s also great to see a therapist or isolated party you can talk to on a semi-regular basis; normalize therapy and talking about how you feel!
set norms for yourself You may have heard of setting norms or standards with family, roommates or social groups, but it’s also a handy trick in keeping yourself happy and satisfied with your day to day life. Sit down with a piece of paper and a pen and write down what makes you feel good and not good: you prefer to shower in the evening, eating dinner before 9pm and maybe you like to read for leisure. Cementing these norms for yourself will allow you to not only adhere to them more often, but also gives you a certain peace of mind that you understand how to listen to those needs.
take care of your body & it’s space It might seem like a no-brainer, but I know that we take our bodies and environments for granted more often than we might think. Nurture your daily hygiene routine (creating one is a great start if you’re not there yet) and allow space for luxuries; soak your face with a warm, wet rag before going to bed every night and indulge in a longer shower or bath when you can. Along with this, do your best to keep the space around you in a way that you like it, both aesthetically and organizationally. If you find time to upkeep your body and it’s space, it will reward you with happier energy, boosted productivity and lessened stress or anxiety.
