by Emerald Media Group, Inc., the independent nonprofit media company at the University of Oregon. Formerly the Oregon Daily Emerald, the news organization was founded in 1900.

According to Interim Provost and Executive Vice President Janet Woodruff-Borden, these promotions and tenure grants have given many faculty members open opportunities for turning points in their careers.

“In addition, to support faculty during the pandemic, the university suspended some of the timeline requirements for tenure,” Woodruff-Borden wrote in an email to the Emerald. “Some faculty who may have paused their career progression are now able to achieve these career milestones.”

Kate Kelp-Stebbins, an associate professor of English, is just one of the many faculty members who received a promotion this fall. Promoted from assistant professor to associate professor, she has focused her work on comic studies and is now teaching classes at her tenured associate professor level. Kelp-Stebbins worked on, published and performed multiple projects before receiving this promotion.

“I published a book that came out last year called ‘How Comics Travel: Publication, Translation, Radical Literacies,’” Kelp-Stebbins said. “It looks specifically at international cultures of comics around the world and how people in different places read and respond to comics.”

According to Kelp-Stebbins, she also curated a museum exhibition called “Art of the News: Comics Journalism” that started at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in 2021 and traveled to Ohio State’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum in 2022.

Kelp-Stebbins stated that her research through her book and museum exhibit are huge components of her career that made her eligible for tenure.

“Especially the museum exhibition that I did here, it was really just an incredible experience,” Kelp-Stebbins said. “I worked really, really hard, but I also involved a lot of our students.”

Kelp-Stebbins involved the help of her comic studies undergraduate students who assisted her in the interview process with the artists.

Additionally, Kelp-Stebbins acquired the aid of graduate students who wrote essays about the work that were later presented in a symposium for artists from around the world.

“As hard as research can be, I’m just really

lucky that I get to do it with people here at the University of Oregon,” Kelp-Stebbins said.

“And it’s kind of a research community.”

Dave Sutherland, professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, was also one of many faculty members to receive a promotion in the fall. Sutherland had previously been an associate professor.

“I’ve been here for 12 years since 2011,” Sutherland said. “I’ve taught more in Earth Sciences and Environmental Studies and a little bit in the Honors College and I think it’s been really fun because even though you’re teaching a lot of the same stuff, it’s fun to build off the new students’ energy every year.”

According to Sutherland, the classes he teaches range from huge lectures with up to 200 students to smaller, more intimate classes with 20 students.

“It’s always more fun to teach the smaller classes just because you get to know students a little more personally,” Sutherland said. “But it’s also fun to teach the big classes because then you realize that you’re reaching 200 students which is fun.”

As a faculty member, the job is typically 40% research, 40% teaching and 20% service, which is committee work.

“I researched the science of oceanography, which is when I would study research projects in the summer on how ocean waters in Alaska and Greenland affect glaciers and ice sheets,” Sutherland said. “We’ve done a lot of research trying to put it in the context of climate change but also as systems to think about them from a physics standpoint.”

According to Sutherland, these projects and studies would get funding from different federal agencies and he would have assistance from graduate students and undergraduate students.

“The promotion process itself takes about a year,” Sutherland said. “The year before we get promoted we have to submit our materials, so that includes papers we’ve written, classes we’ve taught, reviews and service, and it takes a whole year for that to work its way through all these different committees and reviews.”

According to Sutherland, the scariest part of the promotion process for him was when other institutionalized scientists would be asked about his work and his character, knowing that they did not know each other very well.

“It’s good to be recognized,” Sutherland said.

“As a faculty member, it’s a really important thing because it’s all we have.”

HOBBS: “PRISCILLA” AND THE COMPLEXITY OF CELEBRITY RELATIONSHIPS Opinion: The film “Priscilla” shows a different side of Elvis Presley through the perspective of his ex-wife

The A24 film “Priscilla” was released in theaters this past October. Written and directed

by Sofia Coppola, the movie tells the story of Priscilla Presley, Elvis’ beloved wife. By using Priscilla’s perspective, “Priscilla” has changed Elvis’s legacy forever.

Their relationship was inappropriate from the beginning, as Elvis groomed her in the formative years of her life. Unfortunately, involvement with minors is nothing new in the world of celebrities.

But there are no real consequences because they’re put on such a pedestal.

Coppola’s script was adapted from Priscilla’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me.” Starring Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi, the film spans a long timeline: from 14-year-old Priscilla meeting 24-year-old Elvis in Germany to her finally leaving their marriage.

“Priscilla” already had a lot of opposition before its release. To start, Austin Butler’s “Elvis” came out only a year ago. The production was a major success garnering multiple Academy Award nominations and shining a light on the exploitation of the superstar.

And as we all know, Elvis is considered the “king of rock n’ roll.”

To pile on, Lisa Marie Presley was against Coppola’s film before her death earlier this year. She described the script as “shockingly vengeful and contemptuous,” and an overall inaccurate portrayal of her father.

Lisa worried the film would strain her relationship with her mother.

Priscilla spent her entire life elevating Elvis’s legacy. However, the film does quite the opposite, showing the manipulation and control in their marriage.

Priscilla watched the film back in September at the Venice Film Festival.

Seated next to Spaeny and Elordi, she described it as “surreal.”

“It’s very difficult to sit and watch a film about you and about your life and about your love,” Priscilla said at the Venice news conference. “Sofia did an amazing job. She did her homework.”

I watched “Priscilla” myself; the (Stella Fetherston/Emerald) idea of watching the story through her eyes sounded interesting. Nothing highly anticipates seeing the film and looks could have prepared me to learn about her life forward to Elvis being painted in a different light. and, ultimately, how horrible of a husband Elvis “They glorify it, but it’s also gross and weird,” was.

Ledgerwood said. “I don’t think we should normalize relationships like that. [The film] shows her as a person since we only learn about him.”

In addition to the grooming, Elvis did everything in the toxic relationship handbook, such as controlling her appearance and serial cheating. To see Elvis, the ultimate superstar, in such a negative light was refreshing.

There was a key moment in “Priscilla” that stuck with me. She just found a letter addressed to Elvis from his secret affair. When Priscilla confronts him, he gets aggressive, gaslights her and starts kicking her out. And like a switch, the manipulation kicks in.

He begins apologizing and forcing affection. The scene took my breath away.

Kaitlyn Fletter, a second-year at UO, said the film shows a different side of Elvis. “It’s really important to talk about the fact that he wasn’t this great man everyone thinks he was,” she said.

“Priscilla” accomplished more than just changing the narrative of Elvis. The film shined light on toxic relationships with superstars.

It demonstrated the complexity of grooming and the manipulation behind it all. “Priscilla” was the perfect follow-up after a year of Elvis’s glorification.

“Yes, I left, and it wasn’t because I didn’t love him,” Priscilla told the New York Times. “He was the love of my life. It was the lifestyle that was so difficult for me, and I think any woman can relate to that.”

Allowing the world to see the other side of Elvis opened the door to what cinema can accomplish. It revealed the transparency of Hollywood stars. But most of all, it allowed Priscilla Presley to tell her story and conveyed the complexity of groomed relationships.

BY SEAN AVERY • DESIGNED BY RYAN EHRHART Between late-night munchies and morning hangover remedies, it’s no secret that college students have an affection for food. Our bustling schedules and rambunctious social lives often spare little time or energy to cook a meal.

Whether on-campus, off-campus or via delivery, Eugene restaurants are always there to lift us up in times of desperation — a support that extends far beyond food.

Finding a place to eat in and around the UO campus is easy; there are plenty of options to choose from, serving a diverse selection of cuisines. Owning, managing and working at these locations is decidedly less straightforward. While nine months of the year are lively and teeming with college events, the remaining three are vastly different. Even though summer in Eugene is gorgeous — the weather is fantastic and the Willamette is swimming temperature — it’s a bit of a ghost town. For some restaurants, this down period is a source of new challenges.

The COVID-19 pandemic, which put collegetown businesses nationwide in crisis mode, revealed the devastating effects of absent institutions. Since colleges and universities produce student traffic, nearby companies receive less business during summertime. Eugene is no different; local restaurants are integral to the UO community — and vice versa.

Ume Grill Skewer House is a Japanese restaurant located west of campus. It’s one of three locations open in the Eugene area. They serve an array of excellent dishes, including poke, onigiri and udon noodles. I especially recommend the garlic pork plate.

Gina DeVito has worked in the food industry for 10 years and started working at Ume two and a half years ago. Initially filling the assistant manager position for six months, she now operates as the store manager. Although she has no personal affiliation with UO, she has developed a relationship with the broader Eugene community in her nine years as a resident.

Wild Duck Cafe, located in the heart of Eugene right across the street from Matthew Knight Arena, offers everyone’s favorite classic comfort foods. The list goes on from a pub burger to a classic turkey, bacon and avocado sandwich.

COVER “I do have to cut a lot of labor out of the schedule in the summertime,” DeVito said. “A lot of people’s hours do get cut.”

Ironically, UO’s imposing presence can sometimes play damage control.

College students comprise a significant portion of the workforce, with five Ducks currently employed at Ume. Because individuals who work at Ume during the school year typically aren’t Eugene natives, they tend to go home for the summer or go on vacation. With fewer employees to worry about and fewer hours to cut, “it all kind of balances out,” said DeVito.

Despite forcing a change in business model and a transition toward to-go containers, the COVID-19 pandemic and its disastrous effects no longer impact Ume Grill.

Wild Duck Cafe is a sports-themed restaurant and bar located across the street from Matthew Knight Arena and 800 meters from Hayward Field.

The interior is adorned with duck-related decor, sports memorabilia and a myriad of television sets. The menu is chock-full of burgers, bar bites and Hawaiian fusion dishes. I had a chance to try the Vietnamese garlic chicken wings, which were positively delicious.

Although a staple of the campus food scene for many years, the restaurant closed in 2022.

On Sept. 23, the restaurant reopened under the management of Charles and Kahea Haasenritter — a Hawaiian couple with a strong attachment to the UO community. Recognizing the opportunity and the location’s proximity to campus events, the couple jumped at the chance to work close to their son Kilohana — a running back for the UO football team and the cafe’s co-owner.

Returning after nearly a year of closure, the restaurant took some time to get back on its feet. With football season in full swing, “more people are starting to realize that we are back

“I like going to shows and being involved with music and events here,” DeVito said.

Amongst the raucous buzz of the school year, some specific dates and events generate a spike in business. For Ume, move-in time is at the top of the list, while sporting events are hit or miss. Most of the commotion “pulls a little more business to directly on campus,” DeVito said. “We’re a little off to the side, so when there’s events, the places that are much closer get hit harder than us.”

The summertime, however, poses setbacks for DeVito and her employees. Due to a significant lack of student traffic and reduced profits, the restaurant has to make sacrifices to carry on.

With a soft opening, the Haasenritters are taking advantage of the football season and giving their restaurant the time to grow organically. In the near future, they plan to begin advertising and host a spectacular grand opening featuring a hula show and a fire dancer.

The Wild Duck Cafe cherishes its tightknit relationship with the university, but its connections span several facets of the city. For example, it has built friendships with local youth baseball teams, brought candy to the New Hope West Church harvest fest and provided food for away teams visiting the area. It’s all about “meeting different people, seeing what [they] need and how we can fulfill [that],” Kahea Haasenritter said.

The restaurant’s ties to UO are rooted in athletics. It’s not solely a place to eat, but a welcoming space for student-athletes to hang out.

“We’re here to be servants to the community and create interaction between athletes and the fan base,” Charles Haasenritter said.

Moving forward, Wild Duck intends to start mentorship programs, bringing on student employees to study a variety of disciplines. The goal is to provide the student body with a platform to be creative and utilize their skills outside of the classroom. “We can almost be like an incubator for the University of Oregon,” Kahea Haasenritter said. “We can help their students put into training whatever career they are trying to pursue.”

Although the Haasenritters have yet to experience summertime as small business owners near campus, they understand the potential obstacles. However, this coming summer is particularly unique: Hayward Field will host the NCAA D1 Outdoor Track & Field Championships and the U.S. Olympic Team trials. Although students are out of town, substantial summer events draw in some of the biggest crowds looking for a bite to eat.

Sitting at the edge of campus, the Wild Duck Cafe invites loyal fans of Duck Nation to join the team and enjoy some delicious food. From Hawaii to Eugene, “It’s been an exciting ride,” Charles Haasenritter said. “For all of us to be here in Oregon as a family.”

Suffice it to say that Eugene restaurants provide a diverse outlet for students. For those in need of a pick-me-up meal or study fuel, they’ve got their backs. For those looking for jobs, they supply a plethora of opportunities and prepare them for future career applications. It’s a relationship built on friendship and mutual support. Whether on or off campus, restaurants rely on the community to survive, and the institution provides that assistance.

Despite summertime setbacks, local owners, managers and employees persevere, contributing a vital service to UO and the city of Eugene. They serve us just as we serve them — a constant and foundational cornerstone of any college town

THANKSGIVING FROM INDIGENOUS PERSPECTIVES As people continue to gather for Thanksgiving, some Indigenous organizations see the holiday differently

BY LINDA MANZO • DESIGNED BY GABRIELA MARTINEZ November has been deemed as Native American History Month, though the importance of Native history is constant year-round. The timing was placed to get rid of the traditional narrative of Thanksgiving: that the colonizers and natives gathered hand-in-hand and became friends.

The city of Eugene was built on the homeland of the Kalapuya Ilihi, who were displaced by the U.S. government, most notably from the years 18511855. Today, members of Kalapuya Ilihi are a part of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Rhode of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. To acknowledge the history of the natives before us is the foundation of respect that Native Americans deserve.

community. Academic Residential Communities, scholarships and the Native American Student Union are frequently delegated to Native American students. The Many Nations Longhouse is the oldest operated longhouse in the Northwest region, located on the UO campus.

NASU is a highly active organization that holds meetings at the historic Many Nations Longhouse. Educational and cultural activities regularly commence, such as drum-making workshops and basket weaving.

Tiera Garrety, co-director and enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis reservation, works alongside Zechariah Webb, co-director enrolled member of the Yakama tribe and descendant of Warms Springs, to maintain the organization. Garrety described NASU as an “umbrella” of resources; under this structure falls

the Many Nations Longhouse and Indigenous Woman’s Wellness Group.

Garrety spent her childhood in Olympia, Wash. but, “my real home is on my reservation, specifically the plot of land that has been in my family since the Dawes Act,” she said. Garrety described her childhood holiday traditions as being “tribal traditional,” a day that didn’t follow the Western traditional ideals.

“It’s more of getting together, being grateful for what we are and what we will be,” Garrety said.

As young children enjoy a break from school for Thanksgiving, families gather to celebrate the love shared and remember ancestors.

During NASU Community Relations Co-Director Keyen Singer’s childhood, this tradition looked different than most.

“I was always told it was about genocide and assimilation of our people, so we never really celebrated it,” Singer said.

Singer is a sophomore at UO and descends from the Confederate Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, located in Eastern Oregon.

She often visits the Nez Reservation in Idaho and is culturally active by berry picking, dancing and singing.

“Thanksgiving is a heavy topic for us,” Singer said.

Within the same culture and thousands of miles away, Webb was raised in Georgia. Western traditional views on the fall holiday are often disregarded by both sides of his family. “I grew up with my Black side of the family,” Webb said.

When gathering for the day, Webb’s family absorbs the presence of each other and concludes the evening with religious songs. This year, Webb will spend the day on an off-land reservation in Georgeville and Yakama to gather with family.

“We don’t see it as Thanksgiving; it’s just a time for us to get together,” Webb said.

Within Eugene, The Atrium, located on 99 W. Tenth Avenue is home to a seasonal informational panel dedicated to honoring the Indigenous community. For more information on the Kalapuya Iihili tribe and land, the Museum of Natural and Cultural History on UO campus has year-round exhibits.

While we continue the tradition of gathering on Thanksgiving to celebrate the love we share for our friends and family, honoring the ancestors of those before us is equally important. As traditional toasts of gratitude commence, remember the history of the land for wherever you may be.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 21 Studio 7 Art Gallery Winter Show Winter is the season of art.

Studio 7, the country art gallery built in a Central Elementary fifth-grade classroom, will be showing art from Eugene artists to celebrate the beginning of winter. Though the show began on Friday, Nov. 17, the studio is open every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for viewing. The gallery features plein air artists Margaret Plumb, Jerry Ross, Sarkis Antikajian; photographer Bob Keefer; and many more. Although the studio is more rural than Downtown Eugene, it’s definitely worth the visit and all the art is free to view.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 22 Elizabeth Brinton: A 46 Year Retrospective A modern artist, an ever-evolving technique.

University of Oregon graduate and printmaking extraordinaire Elizabeth Brinton is currently being honored by the Whiteaker Printmakers with a gallery that serves as a 46 year retrospective of her work. Brinton has traveled across the Pacific Northwest to teach others about the art of printmaking. Whiteaker Printmakers specializes in etching, woodcutting, screenprinting, letterpressing and stone lithography, and Brinton’s “decades-long career produced art in all forms, with printmaking at its heart.” Wednesday is the last day that this gallery will be open, so stop by between 4 and 6 p.m. to see it before it goes away.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 24 Eugene Weavers’ Guild Annual Fiber Arts Celebration and Holiday Sale Do you feel that chill? It’s time to bundle up!

The Eugene Weavers’ Guild will be hosting its 12th annual fiber arts celebration and holiday sale this weekend. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is free to attend. It’s still a good idea to bring cash with you, though, as local and regional artists will be selling handcrafted items such as “scarves, towels, hats, mittens, socks, purses and bags, ornaments, cards, garments” and more. SETTLING INTO THE SEASON

Change was in the air this fall season for Oregon women’s tennis The fall season has finally reached its end, but the Oregon women’s tennis team is just getting started. Over the last three months, the roster, which is full of many new faces, competed in three tournaments: the Duck Invitational, the ITA Northwest Regionals and the San Diego State University Fall Classic.

Returners re-adjusted to the familiar Division I athletics grind while newcomers adapted to the college-level tennis program. The entire team was getting acclimated to the intensive schedule and each other.

In early September, head coach Courtney Nagle and Oregon’s returning players welcomed four teammates to their lineup: Candela Aparisi from Valencia, Spain; Tilde Jagare from Gavle, Sweden; SEC transfers Nina Geissler from LSU and Olivia Symons from Tennessee.

“The team clicked the first week we met each other,” Karin Young, a junior letterwinner, said. “There are a lot of different personalities on our team.”

The diversity of experience, age and nationality is something that junior Sophie Luescher believes will be beneficial to the team’s success this season. “It is good to get fresh inputs and new perspectives,” she said. “It is still a developing dynamic, but overall we have formed a strong foundational connection.”

The Oregon women’s team began its fall slate just weeks after many of the players settled into Eugene, making their fall season debut at the Duck Invitational from Oct. 6-8. Over the course of three days, Oregon competed against the University of Portland, Washington State University and Portland State University.

It was a prime weekend for players to reacclimate under the Eugene sun on a familiar outdoor court surface. Nagle tested out different doubles pairings and accommodated for multiple player illnesses, which kept Jagare and Symons for matchplay competition. Luescher went 3-0 in doubles, while partnered with three different teammates. In total, Oregon posted a 10-2 singles record, tallying 4-0 wins against both Portland and Portland State, while registering a combined 6-1 in doubles against its opponents.

After making their doubles debut at the Duck invite, Young and Aparisi continued to dominate down south at the ITA Northwest Regionals. The fresh pair, along with Oregon’s reigning No. 1 doubles team in Luescher and fifth-year Uxia Martinez Moral, made an impressive run to the quarterfinals. However, PA G E 1 0

both teams suffered a similar fate and were ousted by ranked California duos, California Berkeley and Stanford University, respectively.

Just as the team dynamic began to gel and players were preparing for the SDSU Fall Classic, a core member of the Oregon roster unexpectedly hit the transfer portal. It was not a player, but instead associate head coach Elizabeth Lumpkin Robinson.

“I figured she might want to leave at one point to become a head coach,” Luescher said. “However, I did not expect her departure to happen now, especially in the middle of the fall season. I think a lot of the team was surprised.”

Following a six-year stint with the Ducks, Lumpkin Robinson accepted a head coach position at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The former WTA pro and NCAA champion announced her job acceptance on Nov. 1.

The four-time Illinois high school state champion will take her tennis talent back to the Windy City. In an interview posted by the UIC women’s tennis team on Instagram, Lumpkin Robinson said she looks forward to joining the UIC coaching staff, experiencing the Chicago culture and introducing her children to a new home.

“We all miss her, especially her positivity, but we remain focused on our tennis and becoming better individually and as a team,” Luescher said.

Despite the distraction of Lumpkin Robinson’s sudden departure, the Ducks managed to finish their season strong with three players advancing to the singles finals of the SDSU Fall Classic. Jagare completed an undefeated weekend in singles, securing her first collegiate wins. Luescher also played in the final of her singles bracket Sunday, but lost to University of Colorado’s Aya El Sayed, 6-2, 6-4. Young similarly faced defeat in the finals against Colorado State’s Victoria Erechtchenko in a tough three-set battle. UO finished a combined 29-15 in singles action for the fall season.

Despite only having two coaching eyes on the players during practice, Luescher said the team is still working hard towards its ultimate goal of a bid to the NCAA tournament. Young agreed, and confirmed that the team is capable of achieving this goal, even if they do so with only one coach.

“I am excited to see how this team will perform in-season; I hope we will continue to grow, get to know each other and make it to the tournament,” Young said.
