“He sits down with a pen and a pad,” The New York Times reported. “No modern president has taken as long.” But still, despite its old-fashioned writing process, “A Promised Land” has been met with rave reviews. Although he left office almost four years ago, former President Barack Obama still shines, now by way of his latest book. “A Promised Land” is almost 800 pages of intense details, mostly political ones. But it delivers what we desperately need — a chance to remember what the presidency meant before Trump.

Obama didn’t need to prove himself as a writer when he sat down to write “A Promised Land.” He hasn’t needed to prove himself as a writer for a long time, in fact. He completed his undergraduate degree at Columbia University and then went to law school at Harvard, where he was the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review. He also taught at the University of Chicago before serving in the Illinois Senate and then the United States Senate. It’s no surprise he is good with words. Given who is currently in office, it is refreshing to remember that an impressive (Audrey Kalman/Emerald) professional and political resume used to be the norm for American presidents.

“A Promised Land” is this kind of reassuring reminder, elongated to be 768 pages. Obama details pretty much everything, from his youth and upbringing to his time in the White House and a tad beyond. He describes departing the White House after the 2017 inauguration. He admits his pressing concern for the nation, but he also recalls acknowledging the work he and his administration had done during those two

terms. This emotional duality is crucial when we look back on the Obama years.

At times, while reading “A Promised Land,” it takes more than a bit of concentration to keep track of where Obama is in the chronology of his life. He skips around a fair amount, though he always ties it together in the end. His focus on storytelling is evident, as he juices every last drop of a good anecdote out of any and all seemingly isolated situations. For instance, Obama utilizes countless pages to describe — in entertaining detail — pretty much everyone who has ever been on his political team. He talks about his early co-organizers, his campaign leaders and his bodyguards.

Not only does he talk about them, but he provides a description vivid enough for a reader to pick the individual in question out of a lineup. It is tiring at times, but Obama is making a point.

Even the hefty first half of his presidential memoir isn’t always about him. This effect is augmented by the way that he downplays his own actions and instead emphasizes the decisions of his coworkers, giving them the majority of the credit for his successes.

If one thing comes across in “The Promised Land,” it is that Obama is a man of principles. His writing is methodical and dutifully detail-oriented, and readers get the impression that Obama lives his life this way and has for a long time. Obama’s careful and precise style stands in stark contrast to our current American leader. This reminds us how, during the Obama years, being in the Oval Office meant something — a crucial reminder especially as we hope that it may mean something again.

Around OR REGIONAL AND STATE NEWS MORE OREGONIANS NOW ELIGIBLE FOR VACCINE: Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced Tuesday that all Oregonians 65 and older will be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine starting Jan. 23, according to The Oregonian. The change in plans came as a response to pressure from federal officials urging states to start vaccinating senior citizens and those with underlying conditions. Brown also said that childcare, preschool and K-12 employees would be eligible to receive a vaccination the same day.

– SILAS SLOAN NEW ZONE ART GALLERY MOVES LOCATIONS: After two years in its downtown Eugene location across the street from the Hult Center, New Zone Art Gallery is moving. It will remain open at least until March, but the search for a new building to relocate to downtown continues. The current exhibit, “Firewall,” opened last week and features images of the Holiday Farm Fire that burned the McKenzie River Valley last summer.

OREGON VS. ARIZONA: The Oregon women’s basketball program is set for their next marquee matchup against No. 11 Arizona on Thursday. Oregon, ranked No. 10, rebounded resoundingly after back-to-back losses, thwarting Cal 100-41.

Now, Arizona’s Aari McDonald presents their next threat. Oregon’s freshman Te-Hina Paopao will have her hands full guarding one of the best scoring guards in the nation.

The game will be shown on ESPN at 4 p.m.

An RA’s struggle from fall term to now

For this story, an interview was conducted with an RA anonymously. Throughout the article, the anonymous source is referred to as Jamie Smith and given “they/them” pronouns to maintain anonymity.

Residential Assistants have begun to gear up for a second term of remote learning in the dorms with cautious outlooks on how dorm policies are going to affect students who are living on campus.

Since the beginning of fall term, RAs have expressed their concerns about the safety and policies put in place around the dorms during COVID-19.

“It was so much at the beginning [of fall term]. It was so overwhelming,” Jamie Smith, an RA on campus who asked to go by a pseudonym, said. “It was so bad that I didn’t even want to leave my room.”

Smith said they heard similar concerns from other RAs. Residents in the halls were not listening to the RAs when they were reminded to wear a mask or abide by social distancing and max capacity protocols, they said.

Smith also expressed their surprise and displeasure at both the lack of responsibility taken by students in the dorms and the decisions that were made by UO Housing around dorm policy.

“If issues from students happen multiple times, they go through what we call a Residence Life Resolution Process,” Anna Schmidt-MacKenzie, director of residence life, said. “So it’s pretty much a parallel process for the sake of COVID violations.”

Approximately 20% of residents in the dorms have had a first-time warning, Schmidt-MacKenzie said. While not all of these violations can be attributed to COVID-19, the percentage is higher than previous years.

In previous years, cases of deferred eviction due to residents’ violations of community guidelines were around one or two percent per year, Schmidt-MacKenzie said. A recorded 12 deferred evictions have occurred in fall term alone, 10 of which were attributed to repeated COVID-19 violations.

Write-ups have always been a way to punish residents who were not abiding by the rules. Since the beginning of fall term, RAs have been writing students up for COVID-19 violations as well.

The violations had become concerningly frequent, Smith said. They were concerned that the constant write ups created a wall of resentment between RAs and their residents.

“The policy that upper housing came up with that we had to enforce just was not feasible in actual practice,” Smith said. “They wrote these policies expecting the best of everybody, which I understand, but they did not take into account the perspective of the RA. The people who are writing these policies aren’t having interactions with students on a daily basis.”

Individuals were being written up five to 10 times a week, Smith said. Despite the numerous write-ups, Smith said nothing about the residents’ behavior changed.

“They wrote these policies especting the best of everybody, which I understand, but they did not take into account the perspective of the RA.” Anonymous RA on campus

WHAT OUR REVIEWERS ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2021

But with many of those performances and releases pushed back to the new year, and some creators thriving during their pandemic-era alone time, 2021 may have a lot to offer in terms of pop culture and art — here’s what our reviewers are excited for this year.

Next up, fans of the Uncharted video game series will likely be either ecstatic or horrified to hear that a live action movie of the series is in the works. Tom Holland will star as Nathan Drake, a professional treasure hunter. As part of the Warner Bros. and HBO Max deal that’s made waves in the movie industry, “Uncharted” will go straight to HBO Max on July 16.

Finally, love him or hate him, LeBron James is the most iconic basketball player of this generation. On July 16, fans of the original “Space Jam” will find out if LeBron can live up to Michael Jordan’s acting career as well as his career on the court.

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” will also go directly to HBO Max.

2020 wasn’t exactly the year we were expecting, and that goes doubly so for the movie and TV industry. But with many of the blockbuster films and TV shows for 2020 being pushed back, 2021 promises to be full of hits.

With the addition of WandaVision, Loki, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Marvel television series, Disney+ is pushing to become a staple streaming service for the future, especially for fans of the Marvel Universe. With WandaVision — the first Marvel cinematic universe television show ever — set to premiere on Jan. 15, fans will get their first taste of what the future of Marvel may look like.

The first full-length Marvel movie of the year, “Black Widow” will star Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, a Russian spy turned superhero. Black Widow will be only the second woman-led Marvel movie and will release on May 7. However, the decision of if and when it will release to Disney+ is still up in the air.

As far as in-theater blockbusters go, the first big hit of 2021 will likely be the James Bond sequel “No Time to Die.” Daniel Craig has quickly risen to one of the most iconic “James Bonds” in the history of the franchise, and “No Time to Die,” the fifth Daniel Craig Bond movie, will also be his last. The final installation will debut on April 2.

Another sequel to look forward to, “Top Gun: Maverick,” stars Tom Cruise as he returns to the role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a pilot in the Air Force. The sequel to “Top Gun,” the 1986 blockbuster hit and inspiration for countless frat parties, has had fans waiting for over 30 years, and on July 2 it will finally make its way to

2020 turned into a strong year for book sales, and hopefully this will remain the case in 2021. The coming year is chock-full of highly anticipated titles — novels, memoirs, mysteries, you name it.

A new collection of early Joan Didion essays, “Let Me Tell You What I Mean,” will be published in late January. From an introduction by Hilton Als to an essay on Nancy Reagan, this one won’t disappoint. Didion’s observations are as keen as they are eloquent, and as Oprah Magazine said, “There will never be another quite like her.”

Rachel Cusk has proved herself as a master of fiction with her “Outline” trilogy and is gifting readers with a new novel this year, “Second Place.” As intriguing as the plotline is — a single woman convinces a male artist to stay with her on the British coast — the subject matter is practically tangential to Cusk’s way with words.

While Didion and Cusk are both known primarily for their writing, you probably know the author of another exciting 2021 release differently, by her political career.

in Georgia this past year. She also wrote her ninth novel. “While Justice Sleeps” is a mystery that takes place in a high-stakes setting — the Supreme Court. While Abrams’ fiction writing is perhaps in the background of her public persona, it does not disappoint.

In addition to these standouts, there is also a new memoir by James Comey, a sequel to Viet Thanh Nguyen’s “The Sympathizer” and the latest work from Oscarnominated actor Ethan Hawke all on the horizon.

Music Lucas Warner Every turn of the calendar marks a time where music artists can restart their creative process and release something new for fans to enjoy.

While ScHoolboy Q hasn’t announced a release date for his new album, many fans are eagerly awaiting his follow up to “CrasH Talk,” which will be his third studio album. ScHoolboy is most likely looking to elevate his sound once again; his production has steadily improved from album to album. What’s great about Q is that he is able to have so much fun not just with a track but with an album as a whole. Hopefully he can bring a much needed palate cleanser.

If you don’t know Saba, do yourself a favor and listen to “Bucket List,” his first studio album released back in 2016. Saba released another project in 2018, “CARE FOR ME” and recently released two single collections, totaling four tracks. This hopefully means that the artist is ready to release a new album. What makes Saba special is his storytelling, clever lyricism and free flowing whit.

While JID appeared heavily on the Spillage Village album, “Spilligion,” this is another artist who has been pretty quiet since 2018. Over the past year he has worked with Kenny Beats and Kenny Mason on two singles. JID has the ability to encapsulate his listener — just check out “The Never Story,” an album packed with some of the hottest bars from 2017.

While many artists haven’t confirmed when or if they’ll release new albums, one can only be eager to listen to a new batch of music that will help keep us motivated throughout 2021.

Performing Arts Sarah-Mae McCullough Performing arts, defined by their live audiences, might be the most difficult medium to adapt in a pandemic. But even with social distancing, performers are adhering to that much-used adage: “The show must go on!”

Throughout February, Steppenwolf Theater will virtually present “Duchess!

Duchess! Duchess!” — a filmed play written by Vivian J.O. Barnes and directed

by Weyni Mengesha. Barnes was inspired by a flawless image of Kate Middleton outside the hospital where she had just given birth; it got her thinking about what we demand from female public figures, especially when they are women of color.

“Duchess! Duchess! Duchess!” is about racism, royalty and how Black women negotiate power relations in predominantly White institutions. With a royal wedding looming, the play captures the dialogue between a Black Duchess and the Black soon-to-be Duchess as they have a last moment of privacy before entering the public spotlight.

The Martha Graham Dance Company, one of the most world-renowned modern dance companies, has stayed impressively active — virtually — throughout the pandemic. The group is now opening their 85th season with digital programming organized by theme. In January, the focus is nature and the elements. Performances are streamed at specific times with the next show on Jan. 19.

Viewers can purchase single tickets to watch a streamed show or can subscribe for regular content, starting at $3 per month. Other offerings throughout the year include monthly Zoom Q&As with Graham experts, classes with Graham Company dancers and videos from the Graham Archives.

If all goes as planned, Portland will host a number of stand-up comedians this year. Russell Howard, one of the best-selling British comics and host of “Russell Howard’s Good News” on BBC is set to perform in the city on May 13. Ronny Chieng, a fast-growing comedian who recently starred in “Crazy Rich Asians” will take the stage at Aladdin Theatre on June 4. Dude Perfect, a group of five friends who unknowingly started a comedy career with some YouTube videos in 2009, will also perform in Portland on July 14.

COVID-19 SHOULD WORRY US FOR CLIMATE CHANGE’S WORST

Let me be honest. Just a couple of weeks ago, I got tested at Autzen Stadium’s drive-through clinic, received my negative test result and drove home to the Portland area for break. Many would reason I was cautious and should have no reason to fear compared to those who fly across state borders.

They’re right, of course. I drastically lowered the risk compared to those who refuse to pull their mask over their nose.

Being cautious compared to nothing, though, is not good enough. It’s time we stop deluding ourselves into thinking that an action is a success in itself. And when the worst of the next existential crisis─– climate change – comes, we will pay an even graver price.

Like COVID-19, climate change is not a foreign nation or a group of people that the United States can demonize to rally its citizens. It is not human, nor is it profitable (unless we flex our plundering muscles again to steal resources other than oil).

And like the pandemic, there are those who don’t believe in it and those who do. For those who do, we again delude ourselves into thinking that the precautions make a sizable dent. We buy electric cars and recycle with the promise that we can reduce our carbon footprint and save the world hand in hand.

The reality of climate change is far more bleak. The car industry sells us on the fact that we don’t pollute when we drive electric. They’re right, you don’t produce pollution while you’re driving, you produce it when you draw power from a coal-fired power plant. Of course the argument can be made that some studies – not all – ─ found that the process is net-better for the environment. That marginal improvement, though, carries far less weight than the complete loss of guilt we feel if we drive electric.

The mere purchase eases our conscience, making us feel as if

we’ve done our part, despite the fact that we haven’t done much.

biggest mastermind yet. The nation’s largest oil and gas companies “sold the public on an idea [it] knew wouldn’t work,” says Laura Sullivan.

Since 1974, experts have known this, but commercial media has relentlessly pursued the idea of reduce, reuse, recycle. Not only is so little actually recyclable, but our faulty infrastructure actually can produce more waste.

The consequence is a deep cognitive dissonance. We believe that our individual actions are the key to the crisis, while the nations and corporations that convinced us of this idea dump decades worth of damaging oil into the ocean. Our cognitive dissonance parallels that of the COVID-19 pandemic, except the consequences will be even deadlier.

What this sort of thinking contributes to is a concept called “the free rider problem,” named

by Mancur Olson in 1965. By considering a rational human who makes rational choices, Olson details that if a large populus is contributing to some public good, then one individual calculates that they can merely stand by and reap the benefits of others. Conversely, if no one is contributing to a public good, then one individual stands to contribute very little by being the first.

As rational humans in the pandemic — even compared to the irrationality of anti-maskers and anti-vacciners — we are currently engaging in a free rider problem. It is killing us and our planet. Yes, masks do work, but only for our purposes. They can slow the spread, but they cannot eliminate it – especially with the trust we place in it to protect us in situations it was not designed to. We are minimizing risk,

not eradicating it.

While other countries have returned to stadiums due to rigorous stayat-home policies, our “rationalized” approach to the virus has been underscored by a mentality that seemingly concedes that our nation is incapable of taking steps to exterminate the virus. Our collective action is calculated to the minimum, not altruistic.

It’s crucial to acknowledge this minimized approach to the virus.

For those of us that scorn the nonbelievers, we cannot exalt ourselves as moral heroes when we are guilty of contributing – even if to a lesser extent. We’ve fallen victim to cognitive dissonance; acting in a certain way even in the face of evidence that contradicts it. We “lockdown” our businesses, but malls are still bustling with individuals, “masked” but shuffling within feet of each other in tight cramped shopping aisles.

Thankfully, despite our clear collective action problem and cognitive dissonance, we will emerge “somewhat” victorious because of the eventual rollout of vaccines.

In reality, we failed. Our nation sacrificed 381,000 lives and many more because of our approach to existential crises like a pandemic.

Doing something, of course, is better than nothing, but it is time to reevaluate the net value of doing something. It is easy to settle for the moral points that come from the minimal collective action of buying a metal straw or going into a crowd but wearing a mask, but it is another to take the first steps in a stronger collective movement.

For a college student, this pandemic is a deadly warm-up. Our age demographic stood the least to suffer objectively, and because of it every university contributed to catastrophic spikes. We are not ready for climate change. Except this time, this existential crisis won’t just mean an extra garment and hand washing.

It means scrounging for all resources, the collapse of all our infrastructure, and devastation that no stimulus check can remedy. No vaccine to bail us out.

RISING TO THE TOP

OREGON HOCKEY’S DIVISION ONE ASPIRATIONS In his fourth year, head coach Rylee Orr looks to build on recent success and boost Oregon hockey to the next level.

While playing hockey at Utah State University, Rylee Orr had a vision.

He watched schools on the West Coast, like Arizona State, take the necessary steps to build an NCAA Division I hockey program and knew that the same could be done in Eugene.

Home for the summer after playing a professional season in Germany, Orr was looking for job opportunities.

Sure enough, Oregon had a head coaching vacancy.

Four years into his gig, the Ducks are a part of the American Collegiate Hockey Association at the Division II level with aspirations to move higher. After back-to-back Pac-8 Conference championships, Orr has the Ducks on the fast track to the NCAA. However, before the Ducks can make that leap, a few things need to happen.

The first requirement is to keep winning. “[It’s attributed to] a lot of recruiting, a lot of hard work,” Orr said. “We came in and took care of the program, realizing that if we wanted to do this, we

had to start recruiting.”

Orr, a native of Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, used his hockey connections to set up a recruiting network across Canada and the United States, making a determined effort to tap into an enormous talent pool.

A beneficiary of that recruiting drive was team copresident, defenseman Austin Pultz.

“I liked coach’s enthusiasm and how motivated he is to build the program,” Pultz, a native of Calgary, Alberta, said. “I came down to Eugene and liked it down here as well, so that made it an easy decision.”

Orr believes Eugene presents a prime destination for recruits, noting spots for immediate playing time, comparatively mild weather for recruits from his home country and the university’s colossal support for its athletic programs.

Raising that support is the next step to moving up the ranks of the ACHA. Over the last few years, crowds have grown drastically at The Rink Exchange, where the Ducks

play their home games.

“When I first came here… we weren’t a great hockey team, maybe getting five to 10 fans at our games,” Orr said. “Now, on some nights, we are getting 500 or 600 fans, and that’s with limited marketing and a limited budget in general.”

Outside of Eugene, some of the strongest support comes from Medford, Oregon, where the Ducks have played in front of multiple sold-out crowds.

“The hockey community in Oregon is bigger than people think,” Pultz said. He cited the ability of the Portland Winterhawks junior ice hockey team to gain a following as evidence of the state’s interest in the sport.

Looking to build the public backing even further, the Ducks plan on playing an outdoor event in Bend, Oregon and future events in Portland.

Outside of what they can control, logistical issues arise in the team’s quest to join the NCAA — mainly, funding.

team, but not nearly enough to cover all expenses or build up Division I caliber facilities. Since it is a club team, no scholarships are provided to players.

The team earns a solid amount from home games and merchandise sales, but needs more to take the program to the next level.

“We’re not that far off, we just need someone with deep pockets or someone well-connected to notice what we’re doing and decide to help out,” Orr said. “We are able to make it work, but if we can get donations, the more the merrier. With what we are trying to do, we’ll need to be able to leave the West Ccoast, which means plane tickets [and other expenses].”
