DIY Upcycled Gift Guide Written by: Georgia Tucker Designed and Illustrated by: Liz Blodgett

As we start to get closer into the holiday season, it’s time to come up with some gift ideas for your friends and family. Finding the perfect gift for someone doesn’t always mean you have to spend a large amount of money. The best gifts come from the heart. If you are feeling lost and you need a head start, here are a few DIY gift ideas to get the ball rolling.

The Split Hoodie This is a great gift for those who love to wear something that you don’t typically see everyday. In order to create this split hoodie, go to your local goodwill or thrift store and find two different hoodies that are the same size and style. As for the other materials, I recommend having a sewing machine, colored thread that matches the color of your hoodies, a ruler/flat edge, a fabric marker or sharpie and a set of pins. Using a sewing machine will make the process a lot easier and it will save you so much time. If you don’t own a sewing machine, there are some available to students in the craft center at the EMU. Here are a few steps to get you started!

Step one: Place the two hoodies on a flat surface, making sure that there are no bumps in the material. Step two: Take a ruler or a flat edge, and draw a line in the middle of each hoodie. This should be where you are going to cut the hoodies. Make sure that the lines on each hoodie are in the same exact spot. Step three: Cut both hoodies in half. Step four: Take one half from each hoodie, then place them together. Use the pins to make sure they are secure and placed in the position you want. Step five: Use your sewing machine to combine the two halves together! If you are unsure on how to do this, there are many videos on youtube that will be able to guide you throughout this process.

Rit Dye Tote Bags The third and final gift idea is a DIY tote bag! This is a very functional gift idea for those who love reusable grocery bags or even just a bag to carry their things. In order to create this DIY, you can either purchase a plain tote bag off of amazon or from a craft store. These usually range from $5-10. As for customizing the bag, here are a few materials you might use; Rit Dye, fabric markers or paint, embroidery thread and iron on patches. If you are wanting to dye the bag, I recommend that you visit the Rit Dye website for more information. On the back of each bottle of dye, there are instructions on what to do. Here is a layout of some of the steps!

Patchwork Tees and Jackets This is a very simple way to put a spin on something old, and make it new again. Whether it’s upcycling something that you already own, or buying a basic tee that you want jazzed up a bit, this is a very simple DIY that is perfect for everyone. This is also a great gift for friends and family, who love the vintage look. If you don’t know where to look for patches, I recommend that you start at a craft store. Usually they have a whole aisle dedicated to iron on patches. As for the t-shirts and jackets, these can be found at a thrift store or even somewhere like target. The materials you will need for this project include, an iron, a thin towel or cloth, iron on patches of your choice and a shirt or jacket that is mostly cotton or polyester. Denim also works great!

Step one: Plug in your iron so it can start to heat up, you want it to be around 350 degrees. Step two: Place your shirt or jacket on a flat surface, making sure that there are no bumps. Step three: Decide where you would like to iron on your patch or patches. After deciding, place them in the decided spots. Step four: Place the thin cloth over the patches. Then when the iron is finally heated up, lightly press down on the clothed area while also making small circular motions. This will help distribute the heat over the area where the patch is, allowing it to seal.

Step one: Boil a gallon of water on the stove until it reaches the temperature of 140 degrees. Step two: Pour your water in a pluged sink or gallon bucket. Then pour about a quarter of the dye into the water. Step three: Place the tote bag into the water while wearing rubber gloves. Step four: Let the bag soak for 30-60 minutes, depending on how dark you want the color. Step five: After it is done soaking, drain the water and rinse the bag in the sink. Making sure that all the excess dye is out of the fabric. The water should run clear. Step six: Wash the bag on delicate with only a little bit of detergent. Let the bag air dry and then you are finished!

ow more than ever, people should acknowledge the immense impact our everyday decisions make on the environment. These days, sustainability is seen as too big of an inconvenience to be considered a universal priority. A simple and fun way to reduce pollution and avoid constant over-manufacturing is to buy second-hand clothes. The perfect place to start your thrifting halls is over on West 11th Avenue, at a local gem called Ghost Town Outfitters.

Ghost Town is a staple of the community, best known for selling kids’ clothes for free and their dollar u-dig pile. Carrying a large variety of styles and different clothing, GTO prides itself on being a one-stop shop for affordable clothes. Owner, Parker Hayes, envisioned a store where you can spend as little or as much as you want and still get great clothes. Full of color and personality, Ghost Town Outfitters encourages you to not only check out the rack but also to have a good time. Hosting concerts every couple of weeks, GTO opens its doors to the community, providing a safe and fun place for everyone to let loose. With unique music, artsy ambiance, and a large selection, Ghost Town Outfitters sticks out from any regular, old thrift shop. Upon walking in, you’ll be hit with colorful patterns and options spanning decades, serving vintage vibes that are destined to spark inspiration. With piles, you can’t possibly get through by yourself and bins spanning from one to five dollars, there is so much to choose from. Open from eleven in the morning to nine at night, Thursday through Sunday, GTO is ideal for students with a packed workload during the week. Take the edge off with your friends and dive into a pile on your next break from school!

With an emphasis on creating a safe and accessible space for people of all incomes, Ghost Town has managed to maintain a 4.9-star review online since COVID-19. Competing with corporate brands like Goodwill and Salvation Army, Ghost Town has surpassed both businesses being listed in the top three thrift stores in the area. Recycling and resourcing vintage clothes is a difficult business to foster success, yet GTO has mastered their niche! Don’t miss out on some of the best deals in town and everything Ghost Town Outfitters has to offer. To view their upcoming events you can follow them on Instagram or TikTok @ghost.town.outfitters.

FIVE COZY CANDLE ALTERNATIVES There’s nothing cozier than a winter night, snuggling under a chunky blanket with a holiday movie playing and a seasonal candle burning. Is there anything wrong with this picture? For me, my allergies and asthma make it really hard to enjoy candles even though I love the scent. Whether it’s allergies, asthma, environmental conflicts, or you simply don’t like candles, here are some alternatives to candles which still keep the holiday spirit.

ESSENTIAL OILS

STOVETOP POTPOURRI

Aromatherapy is known to have health benefits and essential oils are a great, natural alternative to candles. They can help to reduce stress, ease anxiety, or induce sleep. Peppermint essential oil is great for a holiday scent. Essential oils can also be mixed and matched to create recipes. To make a winter themed scent, mix three drops of peppermint, two drops of wintergreen, and one drop of wild orange. Buy a diffuser in order to get the whole room smelling good.

Stovetop potpourri is perfect for any DIY enthusiast. This option also is a natural method to get your place smelling nice. All you’ll need is a pot of ingredients and water simmering on the stovetop. There are a bunch of recipes online for winter stovetop potpourris. A great choice is cinnamon sticks, orange, fresh rosemary, raw cranberries, and dried anise seed pods. Since this method leans on natural ingredients, you will be able to create scents that synthetic candles cannot produce. This is a great choice for anyone who enjoys a more organic, earthy smell.

WAX WARMER A similar alternative to an oil diffuser is a wax warmer. If you aren’t familiar with wax warmers, the machine produces heat in order to melt wax cubes which will create a pleasant aroma. Unlike candles, wax warmers are flame free and don’t produce soot. They are generally considered healthier and more environmentally friendly compared to candles. Two cubes of wax will last about 16 hours. Keep in mind that it is still not recommended to leave one unattended or overnight. Also be aware that you need to clean out wax warmers after every wax melt. Wax cubes come in all types of seasonal scents if you want your place to smell like a christmas tree or gingerbread cookies.

ROOM SPRAY Sometimes your space may get a little musty or stale and it needs a little refresher. Room sprays are a great choice for this scenario. I don’t recommend this for anyone who has allergies or asthma because room sprays can sometimes be suffocating when used too much. Room sprays come in a large range of scents and the holiday brings a lot of seasonal editions. They also come in handy for the bathroom, if you catch my drift.

FLAMELESS CANDLES If you want to avoid the trouble of open flames, but you yearn for the atmosphere a candle provides, try out a flameless candle. Flameless candles typically don’t emit any smell, but there are some scented versions. You can also pair them with any of the options mentioned above. They only require batteries or electricity, but still create that cozy aesthetic people crave for in the winter season.

Trust me, I know it’s hard to beat the traditional scented candle. Some people just have limiting factors that prevent them from using candles. Environmental issues also can conflict people’s wants to use candles. People can also have anxieties over open flames whether this be fears of burning the house down or a child getting hurt. No matter what the reason is, there are always alternatives and I hope one of these options helps.

Holiday Cookie Mix in a Jar Written by: Abigail Rea | Dessigned by: Abigail Raike The holiday season can really break the bank and cause a lot of unnecessary stress, it does not have to. College students especially do not always have the resources to find all of their loved ones gifts for the holidays. This Cookie Mix in a Jar is a low-cost and low-consumption option that can be put together in about 20 minutes with just a few household staples.

Supplies:

• 32oz mason jar or 2 16oz mason jars • Ribbon • Gift tags/index cards/thick cardstock

Ingredients:

• 2 ¼ cup all-purpose flour • 1 tsp baking soda • 1 tsp salt • ½ cup brown sugar • 1 cup white sugar • 2 cups of any add-ins (chocolate chips, crushed peppermint bark. nuts) • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 2 eggs

Directions:

1. In a large bowl mix together flour, baking soda, and salt. Add all of the mix into the bottom of a 32oz mason jar, or split evenly between two 16oz mason jars. (do the same for all the following steps) 2. Layer the brown sugar on top, followed by the white sugar. 3. Top the jar with your add-in of choice. 4. Add a lid and decorate the jars with a ribbon. 5. Tie the instruction card onto the ribbon.

Instruction Card:

• Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicon liner. • Dump the contents of the jar into a large mixing bowl. • For a 32oz jar: mix in two eggs, 1 cup of softened butter (two sticks), and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract • For a 16oz jar: mix in one egg, half a cup of softened butter (one stick), and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract • Scoop even balls of dough onto the cookie sheet, evenly spaced, and bake for 8-12 minutes, or until golden brown.

As college students, we don’t really have a surplus of time or money, especially around the holiday season. This gift is perfect for when you are strapped for cash, but still want to give your loved ones a meaningful present. The gift itself is entirely personalizable so each and every jar feels special to the person receiving it.
