Coffee Syrups at Home Written by: Abigail Rea | Designed by: Abigail Raike Following the holiday season, everyone’s pockets might feel a little lighter than usual. we all feel the need to cut back on some unnecessary expenses. The every day, “treat yourself coffee” we all know and love is one way to save a couple of bucks. Making flavored syrups at home is so easy and cost-effective. I have come to love my morning coffee routine, which has been upgraded entirely by the addition of my own flavored coffee syrups. These recipes take less than 5 minutes from start to finish and can elevate any cup of homemade coffee or tea.
Caramel Brulee:
Gingerbread:
Peppermint Mocha:
Use brown sugar, add ½ cup of sweetened condensed milk, 1 tbsp vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt
Use brown sugar instead of white sugar, 2 tbsp molasses, 1 tsp ground ginger, ½ tsp cinnamon, pinch of nutmeg, and ½ tsp vanilla extract
You will want to double the amount of sugar so, ½ cup of sugar, add 1 tbsp of cocoa powder, and ¼ tsp of peppermint extract.
Recipe Base: ½ cup water ¼ cup sugar
Instructions: For each recipe start with adding the water and sugar to a saucepan and cook over medium heat. Stir frequently until all the sugar has dissolved. Once no sugar crystals are left, add the remaining ingredients and continue to stir until everything is combined. You can use the syrup immediately and store the rest in airtight containers for around one month in the refrigerator. Before storing, allow the mixture to cool completely on the stove, and then transfer the syrup to jars or containers of your choice.
How to use: How much to use of each syrup is entirely up to your preferences, but usually, about 1-2 tablespoons should be just the right amount for one average-size coffee. If you feel like elevating your everyday coffee routine, you could make a cold foam to top your coffee creation. Just combine one tablespoon of your syrup of choice and combine that with about a quarter cup of heavy whipping cream. Use a milk frother or whisk and whip together until the mixture becomes thick. You can then top any iced coffee with this thick and sweet foam. The possibilities are truly endless.
Let’s all start the New Year off right with some budgeting and self-care. These syrup recipes are entirely customizable and the perfect way to spice up your normal coffee routine. There is nothing wrong with a “treat yourself” coffee, but it is just as easy to treat yourself at home with just a few additional steps to your normal morning brew.
There are 40-50 cats and kittens at the sanctuary at any given time. This means that volunteers are critical to the Cat Sanctuary’s operation . Volunteers help with socializing kittens, cleaning beds and cat boxes, setting up food, changing water, and helping administer medication. The Cat Sanctuary has a wish list needed items including gift cards, cat food, litter, toys and cleaning supplies for those who want to help but are unable to donate their time. To learn about volunteer opportunities, visit The Cat Sanctuary website, https://thecatsanctuary.org/.

The Best Gear in Town
Written by: Georgia Tucker Photographed by : Armando Ramirez Designed by: Lindsay Rogers
It’s the dead of winter, and you’re surely thinking about your next outdoor adventure. Whether it’s hitting the slopes at your favorite snowy spot, or taking a winter hike in the woods, Eugene Gear Traders has something for everyone’s outdoor needs. Students who are trying to save a little extra money can look to Eugene Gear Traders for an opportunity to stock up on all the outdoor gear they could need at a far reduced price. Before you plan a visit, here are a few things you should know about this beloved company. Eugene Gear Traders is a locally owned family business on 505 Willamette st Suite 11. Eugene Gear Traders is known for their lightly used outdoor gear, and their love for the environment. Their products are almost exclusively name brand, and in great condition. It’s a great place to go if you are looking for affordable outdoor clothing and gear. “Our mission is to give your gently used outdoor gear a second chance and provide an environmentally friendly alternative to outdoor gear retail,” says the Eugene Gear Traders website. The store is located in a beautiful brick building with an orange door, just two blocks west from the 5th Street Market. As you walk in, you see racks of colorful clothing and outerwear. On a wall towards the back of the store are many sets of ski and snowboard boots. Snowboards and skis lean gently against the white shiplap walls. A small table sits against the wall with books and brochures, chalk places to visit in Oregon and ideas for your next adventure. There are a few outdoor backpacks that are hidden on end caps and displays. The camping gear section is small right now, mostly just kitchen essentials and water jugs, but they also have a few headlamps and sleeping bags. If you see anything that catches your eye, dressing rooms are available for you to try things on.
If you are interested in getting rid of any outdoor gear, they’ll gladly buy and trade. Selling your gear is quick and easy when you go to Eugene Gear Traders. The company is in it to make both the environment and customers happy! Eugene Gear Traders website says, “We offer numerous opportunities for you to get the most out of your outdoor equipment. We examine your unwanted, clean and ready-to-use gear”. The store inventory fluctuates based on the current season. Eugene Gear Traders accepts winter and summer gear all year round! Currently they have a wide variety of snow clothes, thermal layers and jackets. Along with goggles, hats, gloves, and winter boots. They sell and trade gear for men, women, and children, in a wide range of sizes. North Face, Black diamond, Columbia, and many more desirable brands are sold in store. Prices may vary depending on the quality and type of gear. Everything is marked down by half of the original price due to wear and tear from the previous owner. If you would like more information on their pricing system before planning a visit to the store, check out their website at eugenegeartraders.com.
There is also a current list of items that are in high demand for the upcoming spring and summer season, including but not limited to: climbing shoes, surfboards, wetsuits, hiking boots, head lamps, tents, rain gear, backpacks, SUPs and paddleboards. Their store hours are Tuesday-Friday from 11:00am-6:00pm, and Saturday-Sunday from 11:00am-5:00pm. There is parking, but it may be limited depending on the day that you decide to visit. From experience, typically the weekends tend to be busier. Eugene Gear Traders is by nature an environmentally friendly company. By selling lightly used gear they are giving it new life and purpose. They have also presented a more affordable option to those who are in need of outdoor clothing. When you start planning your next outdoor adventure, make a pit stop at Eugene Gear Traders. They should have almost everything you need for any occasion! “We seek to cultivate a sense of community both inside and outside of the shop by staying involved in Eugene’s efforts aimed at making our area inclusive for all that choose to venture outdoors,” Eugene Gear Traders says on their website.

Winter in the Willamette Pass
Written by: Samantha Sobel | Photographed by: Alex Hernandez | Designed by: Lindsay Rogers Deep into Deschutes National Forest, only an hour away from Eugene, you can find a ski mountain called the Cascade Summit. With 555 acres of skiable terrain that make up the Willamette Pass Ski Resort, the Cascade Summit is popularly known as one of the steepest downhill ski runs in the world. With breathtaking views and an annual snowfall average of 430 inches, the Willamette Pass is a popular travel destination for families and college students every year. Determined to make planning your trip as easy as possible, the close lodging and food options make organizing a spontaneous getaway more convenient than ever. The diverse terrain and versatile trails make the Summit an endless exploration. From renting snowmobiles to sledding down the slopes, there is so much to do, good luck fitting it all into one trip. Annually open right after Christmas, visiting The Willamette Pass is a wonderful way to celebrate your winter season. Whether you are a beginner or you’ve been in the snow for years, skiers of all levels are encouraged to explore the Willamette Pass. With 29 downhill runs at a descent of 1,563 feet and 20 kilometers of cross-country skiing, this resort has something for every skill level. While the slopes may seem daunting to newcomers, a beginner’s area is always available to ease you in. If you need some extra help navigating the snow, they offer skiing and snowboarding lessons to get you started. The Willamette Pass provides group lessons for every age, so even the youngest skiers have a chance to conquer the
slopes. They also host camps for ages four through twelve, to encourage kids to learn from each other and socialize on their winter break. The resort even offers a free Power Kid Pass for skiers twelve and under to make family trips more affordable. With two terrain parks, a tube park, and 20 kilometers of Nordic trails, there is enough entertainment to keep your family occupied all winter season. The 1,563 feet of vertical rise is accessible by five chair lifts, one conveyor, and all twenty-nine trails. With the only High-Speed Six-Pack chair lift in all of Oregon, the Willamette Pass has the biggest and fastest lift in the state, making accessibility a huge priority. Once you reach the highest elevation, from the top of Eagle Peak you’ll see all the volcanoes and mountain lakes that bountifully paint the Oregon Cascades below. Operating on federal land, under a special use permit, this gorgeous resort that resides deep in the Willamette and Deschutes National Forest, is known for its waterfalls and wildlife. Such a special location makes the area around The Willamette Pass popular year-round, drawing in people from all over the Pacific Northwest. When snowboarder, Zach Schacherer a senior at the University of Oregon, moved to Oregon from Minnesota, he was surprised at how big The Cascade Summit was in comparison to the slopes he experienced back home. Upon exploring more of the Pacific Northwest, Schacherer found The Willamette Pass to be one of the smaller resorts in Oregon, but still thinks “for its size, it has the terrain of a bigger mountain.” What keeps him coming back to this “underrated spot” is the convenience
of “being able to wake up early and only have a one-hour drive to reach the snow.” Schacherer suggests making the most out of your trip by doing the drive with good friends and using a camp stove to easily cook food, so you don’t have to leave the mountain. If you need a quick pick-me-up in between trails and you didn’t bring a stove, the resort has a convenient cafeteriastyle restaurant open from eight in the morning to four in the afternoon. For a more intimate experience, the twenty-oneplus, Summit House Lounge has a wide variety of drinks and a breathtaking view of the mountains, you won’t want to miss. With lodging less than two miles away and accommodations in neighboring cities, finding somewhere to stay is never a problem and makes it easy to get back to the resort. You won’t want to go far, so you can experience the cozy cabins in the mountains firsthand. Preparing for a trip in the snow can be difficult, so if you don’t have your own gear, you can rent the necessities like boards, helmets, and boots upon arrival. It’s best to go on a weekday because equipment prices almost double on weekends and holidays. On the other hand, if you are a University of Oregon student, there is a much larger variety of gear at The Rental Barn for a reduced price. They even have deals the longer you need to use the equipment, so make sure to check out their website before making the trip. Since 1982, the Wiper family’s love for skiing has propelled their business to become a stand-out resort in the Pacific Northwest. Last year, the Willamette Pass joined a collection of Western ski resorts, collaborating with Mountain Capital Partners to ensure the resort continued to flourish. With an emphasis on innovation, the resort finds new ways to improve its conditions every year. At the Willamette Pass, there is something new and improved to look forward to every holiday season. The perfect place to plan your next spontaneous getaway without breaking the bank. From the to the tube park,
there really is something for everybody to enjoy. Don’t miss out on all the fun this winter, the snow is calling your name. Unfortunately, due to climate change, winter temperatures have risen the last couple of years, causing the resort to push back their grand opening. To stay updated on the current hours and prices at the Willamette Pass, make sure to visit their website or follow them on instagram @skiwillamette.
New Year, New Music Written by: Abigail Rea Designed and Illustrated by: Liz Blodgett Finding new music can be hard, especially if you’re feeling stuck in a rotation of playlists and albums. Thankfully, with the New Year comes a slew of new releases. This list will hopefully expose you to some new artists or at least have you revisiting some old favorites. Here is a comprehensive list of recent releases, all of which are the highly anticipated returns of female icons, as well as, a future release to keep an eye out for.
Club Romantech- Icona Pop (Dec 8) This Swedish female duo was behind the 2012 hit, “I Love It”, featuring Charlie XCX. Following this track, Icona Pop continued to release dance club hit after hit. Club Romantech, is their re-entrance into the mainstream music space. The album has already garnered nearly 100 million streams since its release in early December. With their constantly developing pop-focused sound, ‘Club Romantech’ is just the start to Icona Pop’s next reign over the charts. Favorite track: I Want You (feat. Galantis)
Extension- Kylie minogue (Dec 8) Kylie Minogue is said to be the most accomplished female musician to come out of Australia, and for good reason. Her 2001 album, Fever, has over half a billion streams, and her 2015 cover of “Santa Baby”, is one of the most popular renditions of the song. This new record is an expansion on her earlier release, ‘Tension’, released in mid-2023. ‘Tension’ and the following, ‘Extension’, are her first full album releases in nearly ten years. Textbook dance-pop runs deep through both albums and you can be sure to be having a good time when they’re on. Favorite track: Hold on to Now
Pink Friday 2- Nicki Minaj (Dec 8) Nicki Minaj’s, ‘Pink Friday’, could be described as one of the most influential albums of our generation. ‘Superbass’ was probably one of the first songs you ever learned all the words to, 13 years later, it holds as a no-skips record. Minaj announced ‘Pink Friday 2’ when she knew it would be appreciated the right way. She returns to her original, unforgettable style, on this record. She does not shy away from the quick tongue and cheek lyricism of her original music,
while still staying with her “for the girls” attitude. With features from artists such as: Lil Uzi Vert, J Cole, Lil Wayne, and Drake, it is a truly star-studded record. Favorite tracks: FTCU, Everybody (feat. Lil Uzi Vert)
Coming in 2024: Orquídeas- Kali Uchis (Jan 12) Kali Uchis knows how to push out hit after hit. Her 2023 release, ‘Red Moon in Venus’, garnered nearly one billion streams in just under one year. She has created her own space in the R&B world by pulling inspiration from her Columbian heritage as well as her East Coast upbringing. Taking influence from 90s-female R&B as well as Reggaeton and traditional South American musicians, she has become one of the most prominent female musicians throughout the Americas. Her highly anticipated 2024 record, Orquídeas is rumored to be an extremely worthy addition to Uchis’ discography. If her previous releases are any insight into this new project, it will showcase Uchis’ unrivaled ability to mesh beautiful lyrics with smooth beats. She has also announced a tour centered around the release of this album in mid-2024. Look out for this album in early January, it will be the perfect addition to the “New Year, New You” mentality.
We all know that with the right playlist anything is possible, and with all these new releases, 2024 seems to be panning out to be a year of energy, excitement, and opportunity. The New Year wipes the hypothetical slate clean, so why don’t we all also have a fresh start to our music? Try something new, revisit something old, and use these fresh releases as inspiration for new favorite musicians and songs.

Hopeful Dramas for a Rainy Day
Written by: John Ofstedal | Designed and Illustrated: by Julia Faria January is the month where studios dump their movies with the least prospect. Between the poor selection and the rainy days, chances are you’ll be looking for something to watch at home. Here are a few films that match the tone of a rainy day, and warm your heart. Most are available for free if you’re a UO student through the Kanopy streaming service.
Movie
The Daytrippers (1996)
Claudine (1974)
If you’re the type of person who likes to fall asleep to the sound of family bickering, you’ll get a kick out of Greg Mottola’s mid 90s indie favorite, The Daytrippers. Boasting a sneakily star-studded cast, it delivers great performances and intrigue over the course of its 90 minute runtime as a long-island family heads into the big apple to track down an unfaithful husband.
A candid look into the struggles of a single mother in Harlem in the 70s, Claudine shows the struggles of having to depend on a broken welfare system while keeping your faith in humanity intact. Claudine achieves this with a romance with a smooth talking garbage man played by James Earl Jones. Darth Vader is not the only recognizable voice in this flick, with a killer Gladys Knight soundtrack produced by Curtis Mayfield.
Available to stream on Max, or on Kanopy with a UO login.
Chungking Express (1994) Legendary Hong Kong director Wong KarWei’s double feature Chungking express is the perfect romance flick to kick the blues. The second of the two stories in the film, featuring the swoon-worthy Tony Leung and pixie-cut-pioneer Brigette Lin will leave you in the mood for love. Available to stream on Max, or on Kanopy with a UO login.
Claudine can be found in high quality on Youtube.
Minari (2020) A 2021 best picture nominee, Minari is the slice of life story of a Korean-American family who is trying to achieve the American dream in the 1980s. With a great leading performance by the ever-charming Steven Yeun, Minari shows the good, the bad, and the ugly of achieving the American dream while being tested by human and environmental struggles. Minari is currently available on Netflix.
Rashomon (1950) Rashomon begins on a rainy night and ends on a sunny morning. Everything that happens in between, however, is up for debate. It was one of the first international films to make waves in the US thanks to its unconventional storytelling. A shorter but thought provoking and fast paced movie, you can impress your film snob friends by saying you saw this one. Available to stream on Max, or on Kanopy with a UO login.
Much like a rainy day, the films I suggested probably won’t make you forget about the hardships in life. They’ll acknowledge them and show you the bright side of things, and ultimately the goodness of humanity. If you’re interested in more great movies, check out Kanopy via the UO library for endless top quality picks.

Quick Meals for a Busy Time Written by: Isabella Albin | Designed and Illustrated by: Abigail Raike The promise of a fresh start is enough to make anyone either get giddy at the prospect or go catatonic in the face of a growing todo list. Either way, it’s important to have a filling meal. My plan of attack is to meal prep something that I can use in multiple different dishes. Get your sheet pans out because we are roasting some veggies.
Shopping List • • • • • •
3-4 Squash 3-4 Zucchini 1-2 Sweet potato 1 Onion Cherry Tomatoes Arugula
Roasted Veggies Basics • • • • • •
Pasta Couscous Bread Pesto Salad dressing Hummus
Preheat your oven to 425. You’ll want to either grease a sheet pan or line it with foil. Dice everything so that they are a similar size. This will ensure that they cook evenly. Toss your vegetables in olive oil and spices. I like to use salt, pepper, paprika, oregano, crushed red pepper, and coriander. Bake for 30 minutes. Let cool before storing the fridge. To reheat, I’ll either throw the veggies in a skillet with some oil or microwave for about a minute. You can also reheat them in an airfryer.
Grain bowl Ingredients:
Recipes Roasted Veggie Pasta Ingredients: • •
Prepped veggies Pesto
• •
Cherry Tomatoes Tortellini or any pasta
Instructions: 1. Cook your pasta following the directions on the box 2. In a skillet over medium heat, add oil and your cherry tomatoes. Let your tomatoes cook down until they look jammy. This is also when I add my prepped roasted veggies so they can reheat while the tomatoes cook. 3. Combine pasta, veggies/ tomatoes, and a spoon full of pesto. 4. This all comes together in about 10 minutes. I also like to eat the leftover cod and it is like a pasta salad!
Veggie Sando Ingredients: • • •
Prepped veggies Hummus Arugula
• •
Cherry Tomatoes Bread ( I prefer Ciabatta)
Instructions: I don’t heat up my veggies for this because it can make the sandwich a bit soggy. Sometimes, I’ll add a hard boiled egg and this becomes a breakfast sandwich. I typically like to toast my bread, but this sandwich is super customizable. Do whatever you want!
• • • •
Prepped veggies Arugula Cherry Tomatoes Couscous
• •
Salad dressing Optional: Chicken or any other protein
Instructions: Again, this is super customizable! You can add just about anything and it will be good. One important note on storing any leftovers. I will store the couscous, vegetables, and protein together; but I keep the arugula separate. This makes sure your arugula stays crispy which is so important to create a meal with different textures.
These three meals are easy, quick, and don’t require a bunch of different ingredients. With a short shopping list and meals that save well, hopefully you can spend that extra time taking care of yourself. The new year holds so many, maybe too many, unknowns. With this, at least you know what’s for dinner this week.
