THE N.E.S.T. 'FOR DUCKS BY DUCKS'
WRITTEN BY KAYL WOHL • PHOTOGRAPHED BY HENRY COHEN • DESIGNED BY JULIA FARIA
Beyond the roaring stadiums and electrifying games, an unexpected treasure trove awaits the University of Oregon sports fans, sneakerheads, and vintage clothing hunters. The N.E.S.T. is tucked away within the memory of Taylor’s Bar & Grill on 13th Avenue, creating a nostalgic haven with its glimpse into the rich history of the university, as if stepping into a sleek time machine.
The hunt through the green and yellow apparel is joined by an overhead disco ball and a hip-hop soundtrack. Every nook and cranny is coated in an eclectic mix of memorabilia, apparel, and trinkets that transport fans to unforgettable moments of Duck history. Even non-duck fans can find vintage brands they can confidently strut in. However, if a “bobblehead collector needs a new face, this is definitely the spot. From retro jerseys worn by legendary players to signed crewnecks, thrifters can leave “ducked out” in items that embody the spirit and passion of the university’s legacy.
Owners Eduardo Olivares graduated this past year with a degree in advertising, and Harrison Stevens graduated in 2020 with a degree in marketing. The collaboration of skills, passion, and education is what brought their vision to life.
“I’ve been living here since I was five. Once I came to the University of Oregon, I realized there was a need for something like this,” Olivares said. “We both graduated from the U of O, and we’re big duck fans. So we realized there was a need for people to get stuff for game day, and that’s what really got us started.”
Community engagement is at the heart of this local gem. Connecting with students is key to the success of the business, and these relationships are often fostered through hosting on-site events and popups and collaborating with local artists. Recently, visitors to the shop could find free copies of Izzy Shilake’s “Fresh Out of Autzen Stadium 2022-2023” team poster. With frequent sales and events, students are being drawn to check out where their classmates are getting their duck gear.
“We just had a big $5 summer sale with like 600 people that came through that day. It was really fun just putting on for the community and working with other creative students and people here in Eugene,” Olivares said.
Many ducks have spotted The N.E.S.T. at the bi-annual ASUO Street Faires. Students flock by to find unique wardrobe additions and to support local alumni.
“We’ve probably done over 10 to 12 Street Faires together. That’s where we really got our beginning,” Olivares said.
“That’s where we realized there was a demand for vintage clothing, and that’s where we realized that college students really like having something that no one else has.”
Known as the birthplace of Nike, Eugene has witnessed the evolution of the iconic brand, which has become synonymous with innovation, performance, and style. The N.E.S.T. pays homage to this affiliation, showcasing a diverse array of Nike shoes on the wall, cementing the connection between the university, the city, and the global athletic brand. Other vintage finds include Harley Davidson and NASCAR t-shirts, Supreme crewnecks, basketball jerseys, and baseball “dad caps.”
In its 2.5 years of existence, the brand has relocated twice –– a third is on the way. With renovations designed to make way for new apartments, the demolition of the infamous building where Taylor’s once poured is in the near future.
“We’re kind of in the process of finding a new home, and we don’t really know for sure how long we’ll be here. We know we’ll be in here at least for the summer, hopefully until the end of the year. Finding a new location is a top priority. We want to stay as close as we can to campus, but we also understand where you get there’s also a whole other audience that we want to cater to, which is the Eugene community,” Olivares said.
No matter where the business moves, the community will certainly follow and flock to get their new-to-them threads. The space will be missed as another nostalgic memory for current students and alumni, but although it's leaving one legacy behind, The N.E.S.T. is
“We really wanted to focus on just having a spot close to campus where students were able to get pieces they couldn't find anywhere else.”

Choose Your Meal Plan
Birth Control
Abortion
Emergency Contraception
STD Testing & Treatment
Find a meal plan that fits your needs. There are five options. All include $50 of Duck Bucks per term, which can be used for food across campus—including the dining venues in the EMU.
Deluxe
95 points per week. For students who seldom skip a meal and occasionally treat a friend.
Standard
80 points per week. This plan is the most popular, providing enough points for meals and snacks throughout the week.
Select
65 points per week. For students who might skip breakfast but not lunch or dinner.
Mini
50 points per week. For students who eat on-the-go and are often off campus on the weekends.
Carson-based
Entry to Carson Dining any time it is open, plus five meal point per week. This is the most economical plan. Except for the Duck Bucks and the five meal points per week, this plan is valid only at Carson Dining and can only be changed between terms.
Residential meal plans come with rollover accounts. Leftover points at the end of the week can be used in subsequent weeks (maximum 50 points; rollover is reset to zero at the start of a new term). Find yourself with too many or too few meal points? Feel free to change your plan at the end of any week.

Living On Campus
In the residence halls, you’re close to everything. You’ll meet friends and make memories that will last a lifetime.
Excited for move-in?
Here are some tips to get you started.
Don’t double up
Check in with your roommate(s) before you move in and compare what you are bringing. You’ll avoid bringing more than one mini fridge, and you can create a style for your room together!
Get around easily
Bikes are a great way to get around. Bike racks are available throughout campus and secured bike cages are next to many residence halls. Make sure to bring a U-lock and register your bike online at project529.com/Oregon.
Bring home with you
Decorate your room with a photo collage to remind you of home. Bringing a bit of home with you can really help as you get used to a new place, new classes, and new friends.
Bring your rain jacket
Ducks love the rain, and a nice breathable rain jacket is an investment that you won’t regret!
We’ll set you up with a bed, desk, and dresser or closet. Here’s what you should bring.
The necessities
Bedding (sheets, comforter, blankets, pillows), storage containers, hangers, small desk lamp, surge protector, desk supplies, laundry basket, detergent, toiletries, towels, and clothing for all types of weather.
Optional, but a good idea
Closet organizers, small fan, mini fridge (4.6 cubic feet or smaller), mattress pad, robe, shower caddy, shower shoes, cup, plate, bowl, mug, silverware, inexpensive bike, secure bike lock (U-lock), bike helmet, bike lights, and reflectors.
For emergencies
Flashlight, batteries, and emergency supply kit.
Decorative
Posters, pictures, cork board, adhesive putty (no nails, tacks, or doublesided tape), rug, and throw pillows or blankets.
Don’t bring
Extension cords, microwaves, toasters, candles, space heaters, and pets (except fish, 10 gallons or less).
A full guide on what to bring (and not bring) can be found at housing.uoregon.edu/whattobring

From Drab to Fab!
Written by Georgia Tucker, Illustrated by Dani DeGraw
Living in the residence halls on campus is a great experience! You get to meet so many new people while also getting used to being on your own. One of the best ways to make your campus living space more personal is to decorate. Whether that means covering your side of the room with posters and plants or finding cozy blankets and pillows. Personalizing your space is a great way to get comfortable and avoid being homesick. Here are a few different ways to spice up your room for the upcoming fall term.
The first way you can decorate your space is with different types of lighting Not only does this help with lighting, but it also is a great way to personalize your space. My go-to is hanging up string lights above my bed, or LED lights above the window. These are perfect for when you still want some light late at night but don’t want to use the overhead lighting. Another great option is keeping a small lamp on your desk. The one I had in my room was a small LED bulb lamp from Target. They have great deals on room decor when it gets closer to the fall season. The last lighting option that I recommend checking out is a projector. There are many different types including, a star projector and a sunset projector. Both are great for late-night movie nights or even just having it on when you go to bed.
The second way you can decorate your personal space is with lots of plants and flowers. Plants have many perks including airflow and good energy. They generate a lot of positivity when you need it the most. When I lived in the residence halls I had a few plants that lived on my window sill, the amount of sunlight that they got made them thrive! It also felt so much cleaner in my room. Flowers are also great for decorating because they bring lots of color and life into the space. I used to walk down to Market Of Choice whenever I felt like I needed some new flowers. It got to the point where I had a designated vase to put them in.
The third way you can decorate your space is with posters and art. At the beginning of the fall term, there is always a huge poster fair in front of the Duck Store. This is a great time to stock up on as many posters as your heart desires. They have a wide variety of band posters, tv show characters, and art prints. One of my favorite freshman-year memories was when I went to the poster fair with my roommate and we picked out some together. Another thing you can decorate with is photos and random keepsakes. By the door of our room, there was a bulletin board filled with Polaroid pictures. Every time someone new came into our room we would take a picture of them and add it to the collection. There was also a collage of Panda Express fortunes all over the wall above my desk. Anything that brings you joy or helps you remember a memory is the perfect decor for your room.
The fourth way you can decorate your room is with lots of pillows and blankets. The more you have, the more comfortable your room will be. Not only are pillows and blankets comfy, but they also can bring personality and style into the room. One of the best purchases I made when collecting things for my room was this armchair pillow. There were times when I really just wanted to lay in bed and do my homework, the armchair pillow was perfect. During winter term it was really cold in the residence halls at night. I had about three cozy blankets that were perfect for keeping me warm. Once spring term came around they were very easy to store under my bed in a storage bin.
When gathering things for your room, I hope these four decor ideas give you some inspiration. As long as you fill your space with little things that you love, I’m sure you will enjoy living in the residence halls. Be creative and find things that really show your personality.

College is an exciting time, but it can also be a little scary. It can feel like there is a lot of pressure to figure out what you want to do in life. It is important to take small steps to build your resume and get an idea of what you are passionate about. The University of Oregon has several clubs and organizations related to professional development. Take advantage of career coaching to start planning for the future.

OFF-CAMPUS EATS
There are many great places throughout this beautiful campus for hungry students to grab a quick bite between classes. From the plethora of menu choices in the residence halls, to the fast food restaurants within the EMU, there’s no shortage of dining options.
HEY, NEIGHBOR! PIZZA HOUSE
Arguably some of the best pizzas in Eugene, Hey Neighbor Pizza serves up a fantastic menu with outdoor seating to match. The menu caters to everyone with options ranging from salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and starters.
DAVE’S HOT CHICKEN
Quickly becoming a favorite amongst students and locals, Dave’s Hot Chicken is a great place to dine in or take out a mouthwatering spiced-up fried chicken sandwich. Voted the best new restaurant in Eugene, Dave’s Hot Chicken has an inexpensive menu and gets their customers their food quickly, perfect for students on a budget or in a time crunch!
IZAKAYA JINSEI
If you’re in the mood for sushi, Izakaya Jinsei is where you should head! This local Japanese restaurant is nestled in a small location, which makes for a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The seating might be tight, but what the restaurant lacks in square feet, it makes up for with delicious flavors, inviting decor, and friendly service.
MCMENAMINS EAST 19TH CAFE
Located on East 19th Street, McMenamins is a student-favorite pub just a stones throw from Hayward Field. This family-owned establishment offers pool tables, shuffleboard, darts, and pinball, a delicious Northwest-style menu, and a warm and welcoming atmosphere!
ESPRESSO ROMA
If you’ve got some time in between classes that you don’t know what to do with, stop by Espresso Roma for a caffeinated beverage, a savory pastry, or a panini, and take a seat to pull out your laptop and get some school work done. I highly recommend checking out their scenic back patio for a relaxing read or for catching up with friends!

What was your favorite part about freshman year?
DIYAR
My favorite part of freshman year was no longer having a curfew from my parents. And it’s like I can leave whenever I want and come back and not worry about making noise or anything. I was a covid freshman so it was kinda tough but awesome.
TREY
So my favorite part of freshman year was you’re watching a basketball game in the commons and everyone gathered. I remember afterward, just people being like, I want to go get pizza. And so a bunch of us just walked over to Track Town Pizza, got pizza, and had a pretty good night.
My favorite part of freshman year was my winter term yoga class because it was the one class I had in person all year. It was really restorative and it was really nice to go out and see other people.
ABBY
My favorite part of freshman year was no longer having a curfew from my parents. And it’s like I can leave whenever I want and come back and not worry about making noise or anything. I was a covid freshman so it was kinda tough but awesome.
DIYAR
My favorite part of freshman year was going to Mt. Pisgah because it was a little break from campus and the dorms. It was to go there and do homework and hang out in the sun. We got to enjoy people outside of campus.
KATE
My favorite part of freshman year was getting involved with different clubs on campus and meeting new people.
KAi
My favorite part of freshman year was finding a solid friend group and just like finding a community that I can consistently hang out with.

When
Come Home and Shout! A Guide to Gameday
There’s no experience like the first home football game of a student’s time on campus. The streets are flooded with cheering fans clad in Oregon merchandise. The student section is packed to the brim. The floodlights are on at Autzen Stadium, signaling the start of another glorious Oregon football season. While the passion and energy of gameday are unmatched, the number of excited people can make things chaotic for those that aren’t prepared. Like most of your first quarter on campus, your first football game will be a learning experience. Luckily, Duck Life is here to help. If you’re looking for a handy guide to Oregon gamedays, look no further. This article will guide you over the river and through the woods as you make your way to Autzen Stadium for your first football game as a student.
The first and most important step in a gameday experience is getting tickets. The best and cheapest way to do this is by purchasing the Duck Sports Pass over the summer. For a flat fee of $125, students unlock priority access to claiming free student section tickets for football and basketball games. The pass will quickly pay for itself in avoided ticket fees. Tickets become available at 11 a.m., six days before their associated event. For example, most football games will release tickets on Sunday, six days before the game day on Saturday. Students can claim both the pass and their tickets on the GoDucks mobile app.
Once you’ve got tickets, you’re set until gameday. When the gameday finally rolls around, the first thing fans plan tends to be their outfit. After all, gameday is a chance to go a little wild and express your school spirit through your clothes. However, it’s important to keep an eye on the weekly color scheme. Before the season, the team designates a certain color for fans to wear to the game. This color, which varies between green, yellow, white, black, and pink, coordinates with the team’s unique uniforms for that
week. While school colors or an Oregon jersey are always accepted, dressing in each week’s jersey color is an excellent way to show your support.
Once you’ve got your ticket and your outfit, all you have to do is get to Autzen. Plan on arriving at least half an hour before kickoff if you want good seats. How do you get to the stadium? By completing the famous Walk to Autzen. Simply follow the crowd of supporters north on Agate Street as they proceed away from campus. Keep your friends close as you cross Franklin Boulevard and wind up Riverfront Parkway towards the beautiful Willamette River. Here, the crowd of fans passes over the legendary Autzen footbridge, which provides a duck’s-eye-view of the Willamette’s rushing rapids. The bridge leads into the woods of Alton Baker Park, and after a minute or two of walking, you’ve made it. As you follow the path through a left turn, the strikingly impressive Autzen Stadium suddenly looms into view. Students should follow the crowd across a final bridge and enter through the south entrance. You’ll need your student ID and a ticket to get in and will receive a wristband upon entry. Once you’re in, your final task before kickoff is to make it to the student section. From the south entrance, your easiest path starts by climbing the steps to the concourse level. From there, turn left and follow the other students and walk about a quarter of the way around the stadium to sections 5 through 8, which Oregon uses as the student section. You’ll need to present your wristband to get in. From there, it’s all about choosing the best seats. It’s worth noting that once the game starts, students stand on their seats whenever it’s not halftime. Make sure you’re in a place where you can stand comfortably without getting pushed off. It’s finally game time!
Once the game starts, try to learn some of the student section’s many traditions. The two most important moments happen before the second and fourth quarters. Between the first and second quarters, the whole stadium sings along to Mat Kearney’s “Coming Home”,
a song that expresses our love for the state we live in and the school we attend. The song is beloved across campus, so try to learn the words! While “Coming Home” is my personal favorite, most people prefer the tradition that comes between quarters three and four. While the entire crowd holds up four fingers, the stadium begins to play “Shout” by Otis Day and the Knights. You may remember Otis Day and the Knights as the fictional band featured in Animal House, the famous college comedy filmed right here at the University of Oregon. In the video played on the stadium’s big screens, The Duck and Oregon football legend Marcus Mariota join members of the football team in dancing along to a returning Otis Day and the Knights, parodying a famous scene. While the song plays, students raise their hands and clap along, sending as much energy as possible onto the field before the fourth quarter.
Once the game is over, it’s time to leave the stadium. Exercise caution as the walk home from Autzen is usually dark and extremely crowded. Some students even leave Autzen a little early in order to beat the foot traffic. Make sure to stay close to those you came with, as it can be easy to lose them in the crowds. While it can be frustrating to navigate the foot traffic, please refrain from pushing your way through. By staying polite and cautious, you help keep everyone else safe and moving orderly. Additionally, please keep all interactions with opposing fans respectful. Regardless of the outcome of the game, it’s never more than just that: A game. There’s no need to hurt anybody physically or emotionally as a result. Your actions reflect upon your school and your team, so remember to act accordingly.
Oregon has seven home games in 2023, so there are plenty of opportunities to make memories. If you follow my advice, your first game in Autzen’s student section will be something you remember forever. Have fun learning our school’s traditions as we welcome the start of another school year at the University of Oregon.
