The Emerald will offer a workshop series on citizen journalism next term. It will be free and open to all, because journalism, like democracy, functions best when it represents everyone.

Whether people realize it or not, we are all journalists. We all observe what happens around us as we move through our daily lives, synthesize the information into stories about how the world works and pass that knowledge along to our friends, peers and families. Most of the time, that process of gathering and sharing information is relatively unremarkable; but time and time again over the past years, we’ve witnessed that the first journalist on the scene of a major historical event is simply the whoever pulls out their phone and records events as they unfold.

One notable example was two years ago, when Darnella Frazier, then-17, recorded Minneapolis police officers murder George Floyd. The video she captured led to an uprising against racial injustice that spread throughout the globe. As I covered that uprising for the Daily Emerald, I saw dozens of people assume the role of citizen journalist, documenting protests, attending city council and school board meetings and explaining the uprising to other community members. The surge of people filling information gaps in their communities showed the power everyday people have to hold powerful systems accountable when they engage with the news.

Not everyone will end up in a situation like Frazier did, but anyone could. Further, everyone can benefit from knowing how news is made and become more equipped to engage in their local news ecosystem. To that end, the Daily Emerald has partnered with the University of Oregon chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists and Ethos Magazine to prepare a free workshop series that will teach the basics of journalism to anyone interested in attending.

The series, called the Citizen Journalism Workshop Series, will consist of five, 90 minute workshops throughout spring term. Each workshop will add another layer to attendees’ understanding of how to report the news. Topics will include identifying stories, how to interview a source, self-editing, multimedia reporting and more. Sessions will be taught by student journalists from the Emerald, Ethos and NABJ, as well as a guest lecture from journalism professor Lori Shontz, who has covered everything from the Olympic Games to the Umpqua Community College shooting.

By the end of the fourth workshop, participants will have learned the basic steps it takes to make a news story. The series will conclude with an optional resume building workshop for anyone who would like to use their newfound skills to apply to one of UO’s many publications.

Our hope in designing this series is two-fold.

First, we believe journalism, like democracy, ought to be open and inclusive to all. One shouldn’t have to go through four years in the SOJC to have their voice heard, nor should someone have to work at a newspaper full time to gather and share information on their community. Second, we hope some people who had never thought of themselves as journalists previously will fall in love with reporting and join the Emerald team. We know diversity is our strength, and the more backgrounds and viewpoints we include in our team, the stronger our news coverage will be.

CAN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT WORKERS UNIONIZE?

The EMU Starbucks has filed to unionize, potentially creating the first undergraduate student union jobs on campus.

Here’s what other undergraduate employees should know about their labor rights.

The Erb Memorial Union Starbucks filed for unionization on Jan. 4. If employees vote to approve it — and barista Trinity Smith is “not super worried about the vote” — students who work there will be the first University of Oregon undergrads with union jobs on campus. This filing comes in light of a growing movement of Starbucks unionization across the country, but also of undergraduate student workers at UO critically considering their roles and rights.

The word “union” can be associated with legal struggles and red tape, Gordon Lafer, UO political science professor and director of UO’s Labor Education and Resource Center, said. “People often think a union is something about the law,” he said. “It's having the right analysis, having the right numbers, it's having the right pitch, but, ultimately, it's about building an actual organic organization of people.”

A union is a collection of employees at a work site who have joined together to use their collective power to have a say in what they’re doing on the job, Michael Marchman, UO Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation staff organizer, said.

The idea is that there’s power in numbers. While it can be emotionally and logistically difficult to ask for, say, a raise or a change in working conditions, a union can advocate for improvements like these on the workers’ behalf.

“The idea of a union is a recognition that the employer is very highly organized and has a lot of resources, and workers by themselves have very little power,” Marchman said. “Their only chance of really having any say over their life and work conditions is if they join and act as a unit instead of individually.”

So, how do unions come to be?

Starbucks is a private corporation, so the steps to unionization are slightly different than those for students who work at UO. UO employed over 2,000 undergraduate student employees as of fall 2020, all of whom would be considered employees in the public sector. This means they are protected by state and federal labor laws, but students may not know their protections.

The first step to forming a union is to talk about it. Employees at a workplace can start talking about these legal protections, their pay or other things they might want to see changed.

For example, UO dining employees might discuss their strenuous workload. But some employees might feel worried about how their employer could react to discussions of unions.

It’s illegal to be fired or punished in any way for being pro-union, but anti-union employers find ways to break up unions by removing pro-union employees for offenses that don’t usually result in firing or applying intimidation tactics, Marchman said.

“Generally, universities don't want to be firing their students from a job and don't want to have their contractors, like Starbucks, firing students from a job both because they don't want to do that to students and because they don't want the publicity,” Lafer said.

Once employees have spoken and see an interest, the next step is to sign union cards. A union card is an actual piece of paper on which employees write their names and some employment information to indicate they support unionizing.

For public sector employees, this is the last formal step. Once more than 50% of employees have signed union cards, UO will recognize the union, David Rucker, a steward for the GTFF, said.

This is different from the process for private sector employees who must receive union cards from at least 30% of employees and then conduct an election to determine if the employer must recognize the union.

From there, the union will negotiate a contract with the employer. This is the opportunity to advocate for workers’ needs.

Undergraduate student employees face some barriers when forming a union, particularly employment definitions and high turnover rates.

UO could claim some student positions aren’t jobs at all, but are learning opportunities or leadership development, Marchman said.

Lafer said the legal test of this examines how

people are hired, trained and promoted, as well as what their day-to-day tasks entail.

For example, graduate employees who teach classes could be told that their teaching role is for their own educational development. However, when UO hires graduate employees, UO doesn’t ask which graduate students need training, they ask which classes need teaching, Lafer said. After grading 50 Spanish 101 tests, he said, the graduate employee has probably learned all there is to learn from that activity, but they are expected to grade each student’s test regardless.

“It's not like the only thing that's a job is something that's brain dead drudgery,” Lafer said. “If these students weren't doing it, the university would have to hire somebody else to do it.”

Additionally, many undergraduate students only work during the school year, or during part of it, so it can be difficult to build momentum, Marchman said.

Once a union is recognized, some employees can step up to union leadership positions. The union could also ally with a state or national organization.

The UO GTFF is a part of the American Federation of Teachers, for example.

Once a union is established, it will remain in place regardless of employee turnover until a majority of employees vote against the union.

The GTFF, the Service Employees International Union and United Academics are three large unions on UO’s campus that can provide guidance.

While unions can seem scary, they are accessible to UO students, as EMU Starbucks employees have proven.

“If you succeed, not only do you end up with a union and a contract, you also end up with a completely different kind of relationship to your coworkers,” Rucker said. “That is amazing and doesn't happen in many other contexts in our society. People who get really involved in their unions find that they have richer, better, more rewarding, more enjoyable experiences and relationships with their friends and colleagues than they did before.”

URBAN CAMPING LENIENCY

The city of Eugene wants to transition away from sanctioned camping to shelter programs. However, these programs are inaccessible to some and lack the capacity to support everyone who needs them.

The sound of a volunteer group’s church singing and murmured conversation floats on the air, and Powers says hello to everyone that passes.

By March 16, Powers’ home — a tent in Washington Jefferson Park — will be gone, and the park will fall silent except for the hum of cars on the I-105 bridge above.

After Washington Jefferson Park closes, there will be no more sanctioned camping in the city of Eugene. Instead, the city wants to focus on moving people without housing to safe sleep sites, which are safe and lawful places for people to sleep, according to the city.

The city also announced in a Feb. 23 work session it will lift the COVID-19 temporary camping stay-in-place criteria, which extends leniency to urban camping to reduce the spread of the virus, on March 19 in conjunction with the state lifting indoor mask mandates.

Advocates and some people without housing said they are perturbed by the change, since the safe sleep sites do not have the capacity to house everyone that needs them in Eugene.

This will push houseless people in front of residences and businesses, resulting in more interactions with the police, citations and fines for those without housing, they said.

Other people without housing who have secured spots at safe sleep sites are happy to get away from the camps, they said. Some community members and city officials also said they are looking forward to the transition.

How close is Eugene to catching up with the numbers?

Eugene approved an ordinance on April 28, 2021 to create more safe and lawful places for people without housing to sleep. By late October, the city council approved five safe sleep sites: Chase Commons Park, Rosa Safe Sleep Site, 410 Garfield St., Everyone Village and 310 Garfield St. Chase Commons and Rosa Safe Sleep Site have yet to open.

Eugene currently has the capacity to support 1,023 people in its shelter and alternative shelter programs, according to a presentation in the Feb. 23 work session.

Eugene accounts for 78% of Lane County’s unhoused population which was about 4,000 as of January, according to the work session.

Almost 2,500 people were living without housing in Eugene in January 2021, and that

count increased to over 3,100 by January 2022.

The Daily Emerald asked Kelly McIver, communications manager for the city’s unhoused response, how houseless people could find out if these shelter programs had spots available. He provided some phone numbers and directed the Daily Emerald to a website listing all shelter programs in Lane County. These include shelters for adults, families with children, youth and people fleeing domestic violence.

The Emerald called those phone numbers and all of the adult-only household programs in Eugene listed on the document on Feb. 14 and asked what their availability was. Seven to nine spots were available for walk-ins across all of those programs on that day. Four programs said they had some openings each day, but they had a waitlist.

Closing Washington Jefferson Park and 13th and Chambers The city designated two sanctioned camping sites at Washington Jefferson Park and 13th and Chambers, which made them legal to camp at, in the fall of 2020.

By March 16, Washington Jefferson Park will close to everyone, be rehabilitated and reopen as a city park. “The convergence of the homelessness crisis and COVID-19 led to the temporary use of the park for camping, but the land is a park and was always intended to be used by the community as a park, not as a camp,” McIver said.

The residents of Washington Jefferson Park will get priority at 410 Garfield Street, one of the safe sleep sites, which opened Feb. 22, has 86 spots and is indoors and heated. There are 75 recognized camp spaces at the park, according to the city. Powers said more than one person usually lives in each tent. Steve Kimes, a member of Eugene-based housing advocacy group Stop the Sweeps, said the group counted 120 campers at Washington Jefferson Park when the city announced the closure.

Since the site does not allow animals, residents with pets are being offered tents at Everyone Village.

Kelsy Somntiz, a resident at Washington Jefferson Park whose black and white kitten sits perched on their shoulder, said they were offered a spot. They said they look forward to leaving the camp and arriving at Everyone Village.

Andrew Lima, a current resident at Opportunity Village, a transitional microhousing community for people without housing, who used to live in the park, said he was glad to leave the park, since it is dangerous at night.

COVER Powers cannot go to safe sleep sites, since residents have to be at least 18 years old. They have had problems receiving assistance at Eugene’s youth programs, they said.

Having lived in the park for more than a year, Powers said they are sad to see the camp close and do not know where they will go after. They said the park has become a community.

A few weeks ago, Powers walked over to a neighbor’s tent to ask for supplies for a mattress, they said. They found some foam, which they glued between two pieces of cardboard sandwich-style.

“And now I have a mattress,” Powers said.

“How many housed people can go walk two doors down from their apartment and be like ‘Ayo, you got a mattress?’”

Jean Woest, who for three years has been a manager at Nick’s Old Pub next to the park, said the business has coexisted with the park with few problems.

13th and Chambers closed on Jan. 18 due to deteriorating conditions at the camp, according to the city. Of the 56 residents, the city helped 51 people move to different shelter programs. Four chose not to go and one was ineligible for relocation after being arrested, according to the city.

Saint Vincent de Paul communication and marketing coordinator Joel Gorthy said the transition is intended to be a short-term shelter option, creating a safe place away from the winter weather.

A member of Stop the Sweeps who wishes to remain anonymous due to fear of retribution by the Eugene Police Department wrote in an email to the Daily Emerald that the camp faced some struggles, but residents wanted to make it work. “They organized themselves to arrange de-escalation trainings, advocated for sanitary conditions and made demands of the city,” they said.

McIver said the land will be returned to its former status as city surplus property, and it is not intended for future use as a camp or a shelter site.

A Eugene without sanctioned camping Kimes, a pastor at Eugene Mennonite Church who runs a laundry service for houseless people, lobbied the city council last year to create sanctioned camping in Eugene.

The city needs options for houseless people besides the safe sleep sites because some people do not like the environments and restrictions of certain sites, Kimes said. Village models like Everyone Village are favored because houseless people are involved in the leadership, he said.

“Government-run encampments take away what can be empowering about living in a community camp by turning the encampment into a patrolled and policed ‘service,’” the Stop the Sweeps member wrote in an email to the Daily Emerald.

Lima, the resident at Opportunity Village, said he left Dawn to Dawn — a shelter program run by Saint Vincent de Paul — because he did not receive the services he needed, he had disagreements with the staff and his items were removed when he left for a few days.

In the Feb. 23 work session, Councilor Claire Syrett, whose ward includes Washington Jefferson Park, said many of her constituents are happy about the campers leaving the park, but she also has constituents concerned

about the people who will not go to safe sleep sites and have already moved to surrounding sidewalks and planting strips between the street and the sidewalk.

“When you move people out of the park or out of the sanctioned spaces, they still have to be somewhere,” Kimes said. “They move in front of residences and businesses because they don't have anywhere else to go.”

Houseless people need to follow many criteria for camping to be legal. For instance, campsites cannot be a hazard to traffic or sidewalk users, in a planting strip, on road surfaces, in a neighborhood park, in riparian areas like the Willamette River, within 50 feet of private property or within 300 feet of playgrounds or Eugene Rest Stops and microsite locations, according to the city.

If these rules are violated, the city gives a 72 hour warning before it takes the belongings, according to the city. Between July 1, 2021 and Jan. 31, 2022, the city removed 193 dump truck loads of debris related to unsheltered houselessness, according to the work session.

Kimes said he has helped an elderly, houseless woman with disabilities who has had to move nine times. “This is a person who should have help, but instead she’s being moved from place to place,” he said.

Advocates and people without housing said tensions between police and campers have been high lately, and they worry no sanctioned camping will result in “the criminalization of houselessness,” meaning the everyday activities and locations of houseless people not in shelter programs are deemed illegal.

According to a presentation in the Feb. 23 work session, Eugene police responded to 4,430 calls for service — an average of 26.5 calls a day — related to houselessness between July 1, 2021 and Jan. 31, 2022. During that time, parking and neighborhood service officers took over 1,800 actions related to storage on the streets, which includes issuing parking warnings and citations.

Powers said many people at Washington Jefferson Park have park bans, which bans people who have violated parks and open space rules from city parks, open space, facilities or from participation in citysponsored programs or activities, according to Parks and Open Space rules. Being in these spaces with a parks restriction constitutes trespassing.

“Citations and trespassing tickets can mean fines and court fees that these community members are unable to pay, which can result in jail time,” the Stop the Sweeps member wrote in an email to the Daily Emerald. “It perpetuates a cruel cycle of poverty and incarceration for our community members.”

Charles Petty II, a resident of Washington Jefferson Park, said he wants to go to a safe sleep site but cannot because he has a 1 year parks restriction.

Kimes said he believes the city of Eugene will eventually get sued because of the Ninth Circuit’s landmark 2021 decision in Martin v. Boise, which declared that city laws criminalizing sleeping outside on public property or outdoors when no shelter alternative is available violates the eighth amendment.

Kimes believes the city should continue to set up more village models with 12 to 18 spaces.

In the next six months, Eugene plans to add 115 more shelter and alternative shelter spaces, according to the city.

‘EUPHORIA’ SEASON TWO

DOESN’T FOLLOW THROUGH

HBO’s high school drama raises stakes but doesn’t raise consequences.

That’s how I felt after the season two finale of “Euphoria.” After the groundbreaking television that was season one, which crescendoed into a choral and dance masterpiece co-directed by Labrinth and Zendaya, the season two finale had huge shoes to fill.

In some ways it did — giving viewers the Maddy and Cassie confrontation they craved all season, showing Nate take action against Cal, etc. — but it all felt hollow in comparison to the realness of season one.

“If season one was a house party at 2 a.m., season two should feel like 5 a.m., way past the point which everyone should have gone home,” Director Sam Levinson said in the episode one follow-up. Season two was unhinged, but the way it bordered on nonsensical gave it an unreal edge that created unsatisfying television.

Season two of “Euphoria” started out strong. The first episode, a New Year’s Eve party, opens with fan-favorite Fezco’s backstory and checks in on all the characters. Loose ends between Rue (Zendaya Coleman) and Jules (Hunter Schafer) are tied up, Elliot (Dominic Fike) is introduced and Nate (Jacob Elordi) and Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) really start to hit it off. Episode two builds on this tension, establishing new routines for characters who we haven’t seen since 2019. Episode three kicks off with Cal’s (Eric Dane) backstory, creating empathy for one of the most hated characters in season one.

One of the main problems I had with season two was the lack of continuity. Over the course of 8 hours, we got to know the cast of characters extremely well in season one. A lot of the actions characters took in season two didn’t line up with where they left off in season one. Kat (Barbie Ferreira) had a self-confidence arc which really resonated with a lot of fans. It was disappointing to see this plotline completely drop in season two. Jules is further PA G E 1 0

experimenting with her gender identity and sexuality in the beginning of season two and her special episode, which also goes unresolved. In turn, we’re given a whole lot of nothing. A scene of Cal peeing on the floor and a 4 minute Dominic Fike song were entirely unnecessary.

In fact, Kat’s storyline was all but missing from season two. After her journey to self-acceptance during season one, I was expecting more from Kat in season two. But somehow Kat seemed to revert to her character at the beginning of season one, like the cam girl arc didn’t even happen. Her relationship with Ethan was given three or four scenes (all negative) throughout the season. After all of her character development in season one, it was frustrating to see an unchanged version of Kat in season two.

Although it isn’t confirmed, fans speculate Barbie Ferreira didn’t like where Kat’s role was going either.

Unconfirmed rumors, reported on by The Daily Beast, said she walked off set during an argument with Sam Levinson about Kat’s plot in season two.

This argument supposedly caused Levinson to cut a lot of her lines. This isn’t the only complaint the cast has had about Levinson. The New Year’s Eve party in episode one reportedly took weeks to film, and Levinson would show up without a shot list (a record of how everything in the episode would be filmed) which delayed production.

“I’ve been watching since 2019, and honestly I feel like this season was really great,” Tristian Hoffman, a freshman at UO, said. “There were great developments with the main and non-main characters… But the ending was so flat! I wanted more.”

Kennedy Ochoa-Swift, a junior at UO, agreed, saying “The plot progressed more through side stories which left a lot of loose ends. Overall, the season was really

good but I enjoyed the fan theories more than the show.”

Despite the messiness, season two did have its shining moments. Her screen time was limited, but Alexa Demie killed every scene she played as Maddie.

She transformed perfectly into the not-so-scorned ex, and although it was subtle, I loved watching her character mature. The outfits of this season were another highlight, with iconic looks worn by Jules, Maddie and Lexi throughout. Jules’ New Year's Eve look was a personal favorite of mine, consisting of a beaded top by Nihl, a mesh leotard by Maroske Peech and a corset-like skirt by Orseund Iris (WWD).

Season two’s makeup looks also subtly hinted at character changes. Watching the evolution of Jules and Cassie's makeup and how well it flows with their character arcs was another highlight.

Certain moments left my roommates and I screaming just like season one, like the hot tub scene and Rue’s “how long have you been f—ing Nate Jacobs” line. Zendaya, of course, was a treat to watch the entire season. It was heartbreaking to watch Rue burn every bridge she built in episode five, but Zendaya delivered an Emmy-deserving performance in “Stand Still Like a Hummingbird.” Zendaya physically embodies Rue and makes her pain her own, saying she “still [has] some scars on her legs and got quite a few bruises” from acting in episode five.

Season one is honestly not a prerequisite for watching “Euphoria” season two. Should you watch it? Yes! It’s a great TV show. But the disconnect between the seasons made each feel like a standalone project rather than a coherent piece of work.

Despite its shortcomings, “Euphoria” season two is a fun and very aesthetically pleasing watch. I would recommend it to anyone who isn’t potentially triggered by its graphic nature.

TEARING DOWN FLYERS DOESN’T SOLVE THE PROBLEM

Iverson: Flyers advocating for renters' rights posted around Patterson Street have been torn down, signaling a lack of community connection and open neighborly conversation.

BY BRAYDON IVERSON Around the neighborhood of Patterson Alley, papers urging renters to recognize landlord malpractice were attached to dumpsters, backs of road signs and mailboxes. An excerpt from them read, “The time is now to meet your neighbor. The time is now to organize against your landlord.” Adamant and rigid words, but after reading them, I felt no threat or malicious intent.

That was Monday of week eight. By that Wednesday, I found most of these flyers ripped up and torn off – illegible.

This was not the first time I had noticed the concerns of the neighborhood scratched out. In the previous term, a similar pattern had occurred. This time I took pictures of the flyers in case they were damaged again, and lo and behold they were. The marks don’t indicate water damage to me. Slashes and tears through the center of the paper show deliberate efforts to rip them off.

As of now, the identity and the motives of both the flyer-posting and flyer-ripping parties are unknown.

There’s still a problem in tearing them down. The act disrupts communication and discourse among renters in the community, which is already patchy in a college town.

College students, who generally move frequently, have a hard time building community with their neighbors, especially longtime residents who don’t move as often. However, Claire Herbert, professor and scholar of housing and urban sociology at the University of Oregon, recognizes the importance of establishing these connections. To her, the instance of these flyers being torn down may represent dissociation between residents.

“Place-based relationships are really important.

When you live near each other you face similar obstacles and have common frustrations,” Herbert said. “If you can recognize your connection to the people that live close to you, that can lead to a sense of interdependence and promote positive relationships.”

This is exactly my frustration with the crude and sloppy censorship of the discourse on the flyer.

Whether a neighbor or landlord agrees with the argument or not, the obvious tension isn’t solved by disrupting the conversation entirely. The feelings of the person who made and put up the flyers are still rattled, unventilated and could be shared by other neighborhood members.

All tearing up the flyers does is make members of the community and myself speculate why someone would want that message silenced. This doubt and isolation can only worsen tensions.

Flyers, notices and signs have been a mainstay in spreading information in conversation within a community. “Help Wanted,” “Lost Dog,” “Will Shovel Snow” and many other notices are commonplace in any neighborhood. They build a sense of rapport and accountability among community members and help begin conversations between them. The flyers in question do the same things – and therefore have the same right to stay up as the more common ones.

The flyers themselves aren’t defamatory or singling any specific person out. They are accusatory, but that’s the perspective of the disgruntled writer. They voice no threat or specific intent of harm, and only call for residents to examine their housing situations and relationships with their landlords. There is seemingly no reason to tear these down other than someone disagreed with them.

If a neighbor slipped you a paper asking you to keep your noise down at night, tearing it up and ignoring the problem would fix nothing. Going to that neighbor and having an open discussion about the issue is the correct course of action in that situation.

Why should this be any different?

There were many other ways someone who felt slighted by the flyers could have handled the situation. They could have created and posted a counter-argument, hosted a conversation with neighbors to discuss their perspectives, posted online in community forums and so on.

Instead, they lazily disrupted the discourse, solving none of the problems their neighbors felt and further isolated relationships.

It’s morally wrong to halt, meddle with or block community members’ attempts to build connections through conversation in any case. Regardless of your opinion on any flyer or notice, they should always be treated as invitations for discussion on the issue they name, never a stain or pieces of litter on your block.

Perhaps the person or people ripping them worried about the harm they could cause, but in reality, more harm is caused when community members put them up and are subsequently silenced.

BY JACOB HAMRE Last week, Oregon men’s basketball went to battle with the LA schools in order to keep their tournament hopes alive. This weekend was spent trying to grasp a firstround bye in the Pac-12 tournament.

Those aspirations met a swift death Saturday afternoon in Pullman as the Cougars (18-13, 11-9 Pac-12) dominated the Ducks (18-13, 11-9) 94-74 in an offensive master class.

Washington State trailed 2-1 after 2 minutes of play, but never trailed again against the Will Richardson-less Ducks. Giving up points in the paint was the cause of Oregon’s double-digit loss to Washington on Thursday, but in Pullman, it was the long ball that gave the Ducks problems.

Guard Noah Williams and forward Andrej Jakimovski were the initial leaders in a shooting display Cougars alumni Klay Thompson would have been proud of. The duo shot 6-of-7 from deep in the first half alone. The theme continued down the roster as they had their season-high with 16 made threes.

“I'm really disappointed,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said. “We got out rebounded, gave up 16 3s — you can’t let a team hit 16 3s.”

Five Cougars scored in double-digits. Williams led Washington State with 19.

In the first meeting of the season, Richardson hit a 2-point attempt that proved to be the final blow in a 62-59 win. Today, he was scratched from the lineup late with a head injury. Guard Jacob Young took the reins and was the Ducks’ leading scorer with 21. “[Richardson] wasn't feeling good so out of caution, we wanted to make sure we didn't play him today,” Altman said. “He did get hit in the head against USC. He went through concussion protocol and was fine. The doctors tested him out twice and everything was fine but he just said he didn’t feel good.”

Oregon has had recent practice in games without contributions from its leading scorer. Richardson did start in the previous two contests but failed to record a field goal in either, totaling just 2 points in 66 minutes.

Near-perfect free throw shooting and a spark from the always-energetic Franck Kepnang gave Dana Altman’s team a glimpse of hope.

Then, Washington State freshman Mouhamed Gueye became a spark plug himself. Back-to-back vicious slams got the Cougar faithful back into it as the team pushed the lead back to 33-25 with 5 minutes left in the half.

The Ducks looked depleted as the ninth 3-pointer of the night fell for the Cougs.

A volleyball spike block out of bounds capped off the momentum, heading into the halftime locker room with a 46-32 lead.

Washington State didn’t let off the gas in the second half. The Ducks struggled to keep the ball long enough to find open looks, resulting in sloppy fouls in efforts to slow down the onslaught of baskets.

The lead grew past 20 after another errant foul at the rim with over 12 minutes to go. The little energy Oregon had left on their trip up north was now completely gone.

Kepnang was the only other starter to finish in double digits, while the Cougars’ red-hot shooting seemingly never plateaued on their way to the 20 point victory.

One win in their last six games was certainly not what Altman had in mind as his team entered late February and early March. Now, the team waits for the rest of the Pac-12 conference to sort itself out. A first-round bye is now out of the picture for the Ducks, and another 2019-like tournament run will be needed for a return to March Madness.
