HOW TO SURVIVE

AT SASQUATCH

➥ EMERSON

So you’ve spent the money you made from your work study job on tickets to your favorite festival. Whether it’s Coachella, Sasquatch or Bonnaroo, one thing is for certain: you will most likely be camping. This isn’t your childhood summer trip with your parents. This is time to pretend you know how to camp and take care of yourself. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

MALONE & HANNAH STEINKOPF-FRANK

EXPECT TO SET UP CAMP IN THE DARK. If you’re leaving after class on

Thursday, you may not end up at the Sasquatch festival grounds until late at night, and you’ll still have to pitch your tent and set up camp. You should know how to put up your tent at night with a smartphone and headlamp as your only light. Try pitching your tent at least once before you leave (you don’t want to get there and realize you don’t have any tent poles), and hold off on any “fun activities until after your home for the weekend is set up. You can also find solar-powered lanterns, flashlights and other tools for illumination.

BE ADAPTABLE TO ANY KIND OF WEATHER. The forecast calls for

mid-70s and low-50s for this weekend in Quincy, Washington. Try to find a blanket or tapestry to drape over your campsite and avoid the 5 p.m. heat in a stuffy tent. You should also pack wool socks for the cold nights. They’ll come in handy since you’ll be standing on your feet all day.

BUY A PORTABLE PHONE CHARGER. The best purchase you will

IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT, VISIT THE OUTDOOR PROGRAM. Located

at East 18th Avenue and University Street, the Outdoor Program Barn rents out 2-4-person tents, sleeping bags, foam sleeping pads, rain jackets and camping stoves. Call the OP Barn at (541) 346-4371 or visit the Barn at 1225 E. 18th Ave.

spend on a music festival is a portable phone charger (or two). The music festival setting isn’t always full of wall outlets, so expect your phone to die. This is particularly a problem when you are sending Snaps and Instagramming all of the bands you’re seeing. You can find portable chargers for about $10 that can charge your phone once. This is a great way to make friends while waiting for the next act because, when you are the person with the charger, you are the most popular one in the crowd. Who knows, you might just meet your festival soulmate. But always remember, your social media posting needs to come first.

PRINT OUT A SCHEDULE BEFORE YOU LEAVE. Alabama

Shakes or Shamir? Caribou or Florence and the Machine? This year’s schedule is lousy with conflicting acts. Grab a highlighter and do your research ahead of time so that you’re not caught off-guard that day. You can even get the Sasquatch app to customize your perfect lineup.

BE FRIENDLY WITH YOUR CAMPING NEIGHBORS. So you’ve rolled into your

camping spot and realized your neighbors are planning on busting out a guitar and singing off-key Top 40 all night. It’s tempting to go over and raise hell, especially if you have been driving in a car all day and want to get some shut eye before a weekend of music. Instead, graciously share some of the freeze-dried camping meals (because you know your neighbors forgot food). In the long run, building a positive rapport with your neighbors will be useful when you realize you forgot your SPF 50 sunscreen or need help pitching your tent.

SPEND AS LITTLE TIME AT THE CAMPGROUNDS AS POSSIBLE. You’ve spent at

KNOW WHAT KINDS OF FOOD TO PACK. After a long night of music, the

last thing you want to wake up to is an ice chest full of water, melted chocolate bars and soggy bruised fruit. Clif Bars, baby carrots, dried bananas and almonds are all stellar camping food. Bring instant coffee, not coffee grounds. Invest in the Mountain House freeze-dried camping meals that just require boiling water. They’re packed with protein and carbohydrates and only run $6-10. If you want to cook, REI has MSR brand PocketRockets propane camping stoves (they’re small enough to fit into your backpack) for $40, plus the propane canister for $5.

least one paycheck to attend the festival. Why would you want to spend your weekend sitting at the campsite listening to bands you could be hearing in person. Sadly, many people miss the small, local acts who play earlier in the day and only enter the festival grounds to see the headliners. While it can be tempting to get a few extra hours of shut-eye, you never know when you will find your new favorite band. Even more, they will probably be headlining a few years from now, and you can say you saw them when they were still cool.

Summer Cannibals: This Portland band brings forth hard and fast rock ‘n’ roll led by frontwoman Jessica Boudreaux’s ripping guitar and demanding vocals. The band is currently on tour with fellow Portlanders The Thermals, with Boudreaux also subbing on lead guitar for them. If badass, no holds barred rock music is your thing, Summer Cannibals is one Sasquatch act you won’t want to miss.

M. Ward: M. Ward has been a long-standing fixture in Portland’s music scene. Ward’s work usually focuses on a mixture of indie-folk, alt-country and blues. He’s also one half of the group She & Him, an indie-pop duo with Zooey Deschanel, and is a part of the indie-folk supergroup Monsters of Folk — which also includes Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes. Ward’s involvement with a multitude of different artists and groups has not only shown his flexibility and range as an artist, but has also strengthened the warmth and beauty in his solo material.

POWELL, @MEERAH POWELL

La Luz: La Luz is an allfemale Seattle surf rock band signed to Burger Records. The band’s music is filled with doo wop-esque over-layed vocal melodies, reverb-ridden guitars and chilling synthesizer. With both relaxing instrumental pieces and straight-up jamworthy songs, La Luz has a lot to offer for fans of surf rock or otherwise.

Tacocat: Tacocat is an indiepunk act from Seattle led by frontwoman Emily Nokes. Though their music is incredibly fun, the band focuses seriously on feminism and social justice with songs like “Hey Girl, which brings up street harassment, and “Men Explain Things to Me, which mocks the condescending act of mansplaining.

Blind Pilot: Blind Pilot is an indie-folk group originally from Astoria, Oregon, and is now settled in Portland. The band’s musical styling brings forth feelings of warmth and comfort emphasized with the usage of string instruments, xylophone and upright bass. Blind Pilot proves to be a band you’ll want to listen to while snuggling up next to the fire, or while wrapped in a blanket under the night sky in the Washington Gorge.

Thunderpussy: Thunderpussy knows that sex sells, and they know how to sell it. Although the band brings forth undeniable sexiness, it’s almost forgettable when being pounded by their earthshattering rock ‘n’ roll. Led by frontwoman Molly Sides’ soulful vocals, the leather-clad and sequin-covered Seattlebased group plays straightforward rock with sensual blues influences.

Childbirth: Childbirth is an all-female, alt-rock/punk supergroup made up of Seattle musicians Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt, Bree McKenna of Tacocat and Stacy Peck of Pony Time. For its namesake, the band performs in full hospital gowns. The band’s music primarily focuses on women’s rights, even releasing an album of that name, through short and sweet punk songs.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra: Hailing from Portland, Unknown Mortal Orchestra has become a bit of a PNW standard. UMO’s music focuses in the psychedelic sphere, pushing danceable, grooveheavy, lo-fi jams. Luckily, UMO is a band that frequently plays shows in Eugene and Portland, so if you miss out on Sasquatch, you’ll most likely be able to see the group somewhere nearby soon.

Q&A:

CHRIS BAIO OF VAMPIRE WEEKEND SOLO AT SASQUATCH

“‘IF IT EVEN WOULD MATTER, I WOULD PLAY EVERY PART/ BUT I’M TOO OVEREAGER AND I JUST FALSE START.’ CHRIS BAIO on the song “Sister of Pearl.

You can catch Baio this Sunday, May 29, at 7:30 p.m. on the Chupacabra stage during the Sasquatch! Music Festival

➥ EMERSON

Geography always played a big role for Vampire Weekend, from the smoggy New York City skyline cover of 2013’s Modern Vampires of the City to the lyrics’ international references. But on bassist Chris Baio’s solo debut The Names, the album’s sense of place is more ambiguous. Much like David Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy records – Low (1977), Heroes (1977) and Lodger (1979) – The Names, which came out last September on Glassnote Records, is another record that boasts a different sound when a musician gets displaced. For Bowie, it was Los Angeles to Berlin; for Baio, NYC to London. Baio says the Berlin Trilogy was an inspiration for The Names, and told the Emerald that before Bowie’s passing in January this year, he spent the weekend listening obsessively to his final record, Blackstar. “When I woke up the following Monday and saw that his name was trending on Twitter, I thought it was related to the incredible album, he wrote via email. “I’ll always remember spending the Tuesday of that week walking

around Brixton with Blackstar on repeat and leaving flowers at his childhood home in Stansfield road. I’m still listening to it regularly and feel like it’s the greatest album ever made by a recording artist in their 60s. Baio relocated to London in summer 2013 at age 28, while touring with the band for Modern Vampires and beginning to write The Names, which was named for Don DeLillio’s sprawling 1982 novel. The album’s electronic and ambient atmosphere is stronger than anything in the Vampire Weekend catalog, but a fan of the Afro-pop frivolity of VW could still relish in the nimble guitar hook of “Sister of Pearl (which sounds like an acoustic relative of “A-Punk). In the bridge, he sings, “If it even would matter, I would play every part/But I’m too overeager and I just false start and squeezes in the extra two syllables of eager with slop and charm. The cover art shows a towering white apartment building, punctuated with windows in perfect symmetry. The image, from artist

Matthias Heiderich, whose works regularly land somewhere in the uncanny valley — not quite a real photo nor a fabricated graphic — further emphasizes the ambiguous sense of place in the album. “I bought two prints of Heiderich’s and they hang in my home studio. I try to channel them whenever I’m working on music, wrote Baio. “I picked the specific image for a bunch of reasons, but more than anything I just found it very striking and iconic. You can catch Baio this Sunday, May 29, at 7:30 p.m. on the Chupacabra stage during the Sasquatch! Music Festival. This will be the first time he’s played the festival without Vampire Weekend. “I’ve always loved playing Sasquatch and was really happy when I found out I’d be playing it this year, he said. “I’ve never played the Chupacabra stage, but my understanding is that Chupacabras are rather spooky, so I’m hoping to bring deeply spooky vibes for my set on Sunday.
