LOOKING AT HOW TEAMS FROM AROUND THE CONFERENCE FARED IN THEIR WEEK 8 MATCHUPS
Northern Pac-12 teams had a really good day on Saturday.
BY BRADY RUTH • TWITTER @BRADYRUTH10
The Pac-12 only had eight teams in play this week with USC, Utah, Washington State and Arizona on a bye. Opponents from the former Pac-12 North –– the conference did away with divisions at the beginning of 2022 –– were victorious in each of the four contests. No. 8 Oregon, obviously, won arguably its biggest home game in half a decade. Unfortunately for Duck fans, familiar foes also found success in yet another week of conference play.
Washington (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12) earns first road win in 28-21 contest with California (3-4,1-3 Pac-12)
This game was a lot closer than many thought it would be, but there comes a certain point in the season where it doesn’t matter how a team wins, just that they do. As close as this game was, the Huskies never trailed and were often able to play with a lead. Saturday was a huge step for a Washington defense that has had some serious struggles this year. It didn’t force any Cal turnovers, but it limited the Bears to three scoring drives. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. took care of the rest. He added 374 passing yards and a pair of touchdown passes. He continues to lead the nation in passing yards. The Huskies have a week off before they host Oregon State (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12) on Nov. 4.
Cal’s hot start to the season has quickly fizzled into mediocrity. Everything about the Bears in this game just looked okay. Limiting the Washington offense to its season low in points was impressive, but the offense just failed to capitalize on it. Cal’s 61 rushing yards forced the Bears to rely on the arm of quarterback Jack Plummer. It wasn’t a recipe for success because he had just 245 passing yards as the Bears offense sputtered. Cal has now lost three straight games and next week looks no easier as No. 8 Oregon (6-1, 4-0 Pac-12) comes into Berkeley.
Oregon State (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12) rolls past Colorado (1-6, 1-3 Pac-12) with 42-9 blowout win
The Beavers seem to be really good at beating unranked teams. After
slaughtering Colorado, Oregon State remains undefeated against unranked opponents in 2022. Beavers’ running back Damien Martinez led the way as he rushed through the night… and the Buffaloes’ defense. The freshman racked up a career high 178 yards on 22 attempts. His three touchdowns alone outscored Colorado. The Beavers’ turnover chain was busy all night. Oregon State forced four Colorado turnovers –– including a pick-6 –– and the Beavers scored 21 points off the Buffaloes’ blunders. The Beavers have a bye week before a huge game with Washington (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12) in week 10.
After a thrilling win over Cal last week, Colorado has returned to the abysmal team it was through the first seven weeks of the season. There’s nothing positive to say about the Buffaloes’ play on Saturday night, and there’s no new way to say they stink. Hosting Arizona State (2-5, 1-3 Pac-12) next week may be Colorado’s last chance for a win in 2022.
Stanford (3-4, 1-4 Pac-12) wins first conference game 15-14 over Arizona State (2-5, 1-3 Pac-12)
This was not a pretty game. But for a Stanford team seeking its first conference win, struggling Arizona State was seen as an opportunity. Quarterback Tanner McKee threw for a season high 320 passing yards as the ground game was rendered ineffective, collecting just 78 rushing yards. The Cardinal couldn’t find the endzone once on Saturday and had to rely on kicker Joshua Karty –– who was 5/5 on the day –– for all their scoring. Stanford travels south next week for a meeting with a No. 12 UCLA (6-1, 4-1 Pac-12) team looking for a bounceback.
Arizona State really got everyone excited with its win over Washington a few weeks back, but this team has no true direction. The Sun Devils had six punts, an interception and a missed field goal. They found the endzone twice in the first half and then had nothing to show for the rest of the day. But 2022 effectively became a punt after Arizona State fired its coach after week three. The Sun Devils head to Boulder next week to play Colorado (1-6, 1-3 Pac-12).

On Saturday, Oct. 29, the No. 8 Oregon Ducks (6-1, 4-0) will take on the unranked California Golden Bears (3-4, 1-3) in Berkeley, California.
With Oregon now firmly in the driver’s seat of the Pac-12 conference after its emphatic win over the No. 12 UCLA Bruins (6-1, 3-1) in week 8, it will look to complete its trifecta of wins against California schools (Stanford University, UCLA and UC Berkeley) on its schedule.
The Ducks are rolling as they’re on a sixgame win streak and tied their all-time home wins record. Senior quarterback Bo Nix is fully immersed in the Heisman Trophy conversation after he dissected the Bruins’ defense, as he threw for 283 yards and five touchdowns.

star on the uninspiring Golden Bears football team, who gave the Colorado Buffaloes their first victory of the season in week 7. In their 49-31 win over the Arizona Wildcats (3-4, 1-3) Ott ran wild for a career-high 274 yards and three touchdowns.
Ott now ranks third in the Pac-12 in rushing yards with 617 and fourth in yards per game with 88.1.
Senior quarterback Jack Plummer is a transfer from Purdue and is having himself a career year statistically.
Plummer has thrown for 1,754 yards, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions in his first year with the Golden Bears.
If Oregon is able to bottle up Ott in the backfield, Cal’s passing game won’t open up for Plummer.
The Golden Bears’ defense ranks second in the
conference in total defense as they have proven to force turnovers and get after the quarterback.
On the season, Cal has intercepted eight passes, recovered four fumbles and completed 11 sacks.
If Cal wants to have any chance at competing in this matchup, its defense will have to duplicate the success they’ve produced so far.
Oregon is so talented, well coached and battle tested that it could have this contest wrapped up at halftime. Look for the Ducks to cover the large spread of 17 points as well.
Tune into FS1 at 12:30 p.m. to watch the Ducks face the Golden Bears in this season’s matchup between Pac-12 foes.

THE DUCKS ARE ENJOYING A SURPRISE HISTORIC SEASON
BY AARON HEISEN • TWITTER @AARON_HEISEN
Shock permeated throughout the Oregon football community on Jan. 22.
Its head coach, Mario Cristobal, announced his departure from the program seeking a role at his alma mater, the University of Miami. While Cristobal’s time in Eugene was far from flawless, Oregon fans grew accustomed to his winning ways, a philosophy predicated on defense and consistent recruiting classes. The Ducks were building something, just as they had during Chip Kelly and Mark Helfrich’s time at the helm. Sustained comfort is difficult to find at the collegiate level. It’s what any program seeks.
Before Cristobal’s departure, the Ducks’ 2022 recruiting class sat atop the Pac-12 conference; that would soon change as many Oregon recruits followed the coach to Miami while others chose to attend different programs.
That wave of shock turned into a feeling of doubt.
Towards the end of the 2021 season, the Ducks — a perennial West Coast powerhouse — imploded in the form of three losses by 15 points or more. The departure of their coach and key players such as Kayvon Thibodeaux, Verone McKinley III and Travis Dye, among others, added insult to injury.
For months following, one question loomed over the Oregon football program: Where was this onceNational-Championship-contending program heading?
Fast forward to mid-October, and I’m writing this article a block away from the Memorial Quad on Oregon’s campus as the ESPN Gameday crew builds their set in preparation for the Ducks’ most anticipated home game in four years.
Rewind two months to Oregon media day, and the questions that dominated the afternoon made it seem like this season would be a rebuild: a transition year between Cristobal’s former roster build and the new recruiting class head coach Dan Lanning would bring in 2023.
Instead, what unfolded over the next six weeks was unexpected to say the least, especially after the Ducks’ season started with a 49-3 loss to Lanning’s former employer, the Georgia Bulldogs.
A team highlighted by 10 transfers including quarterback Bo Nix, running backs Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington and cornerback Christian Gonzalez has put the nation on notice, wiping away the agony that came with watching Cristobal’s lackluster offensive showings. His teams rarely covered the spread — playing down to opponents such as 5-6 Arizona State in 2019, and a 2021 Stanford team that finished the season 3-9.
While Oregon teams during the Cristobal era found success as displayed by their 35-13 record, its offenses sputtered to the tone of dink and dunk passes and talented quarterbacks whose performances were capped by the play-calling. The Lanning iteration of the Ducks has Eugene
buzzing. Tents were set up on Thursday outside of the Memorial Quad in preparation for Saturday’s GameDay.
And as No. 10 Oregon prepares to host No. 9 UCLA, it’s in the midst of a season that projects to nearly match the statistical outpour Kelly and Helfrich once provided Ducks fans.
In 2012, when the Ducks went 12-1 and won the Fiesta Bowl, quarterback Marcus Mariota — a quarterback known for his running ability — rushed for 690 yards over 12 games. In 2022, Nix, who never surpassed 400 rushing yards in his three seasons at Auburn, leads all Pac-12 quarterbacks through six games with 331 rushing yards and is on track to nearly match Mariota’s 2012 mark by accumulating 662 yards.
Alongside Nix in the backfield, those aforementioned transfers, Irving and Whittington, have helped the Ducks to lead the conference with 241.7 rushing yards per game, averaging 7.2 and 6.5 yards per carry respectively.
Through the air, sophomore standout Troy Franklin has already accumulated 429 receiving yards. He’s on pace for 858, which would put him third among Ducks wide receivers in the past decade. Up there with guys like Byron Marshall and Dillon Mitchell.
The stats speak for themselves, and this Ducks team in its first season under Lanning certainly passes the eye test. Give creative offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham his flowers. The product on the field has been a refreshing sight for Ducks fans’ eyes who had grown accustomed to the recurring pattern of attracting elite level athletes, yet rarely playing to their strengths, and ho-hum offenses who would refuse to push the ball downfield.
Many collegiate football programs across the nation seek long-term sustained success, building from the bottom up each time they welcome a new head coach. Take the Bruins for example, who have been building for a season like the one they’re experiencing for five years, since hiring Kelly. The Ducks are enjoying that level of riches in Lanning’s first go at it.
While it may not result in a National Championship run — as one-loss Pac-12 teams struggle to earn respect from the CFP committee — 2022 acts as a foundation for the bright future Lanning and his staff are building in Eugene. It’s made apparent by the offensive stats, and the excitement that floods Eugene this game week.
Saturday’s game against UCLA and the pressure that comes with hosting GameDay will test the Ducks, and it will be telling — for the future of this season and this program — how they respond to it all.

To many, what the Oregon Ducks have accomplished this season was far from expected before it started.

Defense seemed optional on Saturday. For Oregon, winning certainly was not. Head coach Dan Lanning was going to do whatever it took to give his No. 10 Oregon Ducks (6-1, 4-0 Pac-12) a necessary win over No. 9 UCLA (6-1, 3-1 Pac-12).
As a result of an offensive onslaught and Lanning’s gutsy calls, the Ducks accomplished just that with a 45-30 victory over the Bruins.
The first 12 drives of Saturday’s contest resulted in scores. After the fifth drive, it became abundantly clear that the winner would be the team with more offensive possessions. Lanning had the recipe to earn an extra one.
Leading 17-10 in the second quarter, Oregon kicker Andrew Boyle shocked Autzen by recovering his own stealthy onside kick.
Boyle talked about how Oregon had practiced such a kick throughout the week with hopes to potentially steal a possession. “Coach gave me the call, and I was ready to do it,” he said.
Quarterback Bo Nix wasn’t going to let Boyle’s gift go to waste.
Boyle’s surprise set up another touchdown drive –– one of the Ducks’ six on the day –– and put Oregon comfortably ahead with a 24-10 lead.
Nix is looking like a different quarterback than the SEC ever saw. While playing in the Pac-12, he’s consistently a candidate for offensive player of the week. Saturday was no exception, and his confidence is contagious.
Lanning said there’s no way one can look at him right now and not see an elite quarterback.
Another big day for Nix was capitalized by a 51 yard bomb over the Bruin defense to hit Troy Franklin in stride.
“[Troy] has a big catch radius,” Lanning said. “The catches you see on the game field are the same ones you see in practice. He’s grown up a ton as a player.”
Franklin’s seasonal stats grew on Saturday with eight catches for 132 yards and two scores.
Midway through the third quarter, Lanning stuck to his mindset with two more bold play calls. Facing fourth and short on both his own 27 and 38 yard lines, Lanning dialed up two conversions, both relying on Nix’s scrambling ability.
After converting the first one, the decision to attempt the second one wasn’t
BY BRADY
one Lanning pondered over for long.
“We knew we were going for it,” Lanning said. “The first one wasn’t for sure… the second one was.”
And Duck fans once thought Chip Kelly was a creative coach. Nix spread the wealth throughout his riches of targets leading to an offensive explosion. His 283 passing yards were divided amongst seven different receivers.
“We’re all playing great football right now,” Nix said. “My job is easy. Just get the ball into their hands.”
As for the run game? It nearly matched Nix’s passing stats as Oregon rushers collected 273 ground yards on the day.
At first, it was chunk runs from Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington that put points on the board. But as the game progressed, those gashing plays turned into debilitating short runs that kept the chains moving and the Bruins defense on the field.
It wasn’t until Oregon had a 22 point lead –– and under seven minutes left –– that the offense settled for its first punt. The Ducks’ first seven drives resulted in points. The Bruins defense simply had no answers, especially when it came to Franklin.
It didn’t even matter that the Oregon defense never forced a punt.
Autzen was rocking.
Franklin, Lanning, Nix and Boyle all spoke on the impact the Auzten noise had on the game. Thanks to help from a deafening crowd, the Bruins fell just as hard as the rain did on an unusual day in Eugene. With 23 straight wins now at Autzen Stadium, the Ducks have turned their home field into one like no other. On Saturday, it sported a stadium of 59,962 fans with a student section who bought into the pink-out theme.
Together, they showed Bruins’ fans how a team can benefit from a packed and raucous home crowd.
Georgia feels like a distant memory. This Oregon offense feels like a dominant force in the making.

DUCKS STOMP OUT CANCER AND BRUINS FOR AN ELECTRIFYING 45-30 WIN
BY JACK AARON • TWITTER @JACKMAARON
Chip Kelly’s return to Autzen Stadium took a turn for the worse.
The UCLA head coach failed to find a rhythm on offense as his No. 9 Bruins fell 45-30 to his former team, the No. 10 Oregon Ducks, on Saturday.
Although the offenses would find their stride, neither came out of the gate firing. In fact, it took until the first play of the second quarter for the game’s first touchdown.
Oregon’s offense opened up with two key Troy Franklin catches — who continuously gashed the Bruins’ defense to the tune of eight catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns — and a powerful run from Mar’Keise “Bucky” Irving.
The drive set up a season-long field goal of 44 yards for Camden Lewis, which he got just enough leg on.
UCLA’s first drive put the Ducks’ defense on their toes. Whether Chip Kelly called options, screens or play actions, it didn’t seem to matter. The Bruins were marching down the field, but offensive line penalties and pass breakups forced a 47-yard field goal from the Bruins.
On the Ducks’ next drive, Bo Nix methodically moved the offense down the field with impressive runs from Irving and Noah Whittington complementing his quarterback play, setting the Ducks up in the red zone. Three plays later, Nix found a wide-open Terrance Ferguson to put Oregon up 10-3.
Kelly’s offense answered immediately, with a classic, up-tempo, seven-play 75-yard drive to even it up.
Oregon responded with an even faster five-play 75-yard drive, highlighted by a throw from Nix. From the UCLA 49, Nix launched a beautiful rainbow of a deep ball to Franklin, who caught the ball in stride and never looked back.
“All my focus is on the ball. I don’t really try to imagine that the defensive back is there,” Franklin said. “That’s the kind of mindset I go out there with.”
Soon after the Franklin touchdown, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning made a call that would change the complexion of the game. UCLA wasn’t expecting an onside kick, much less for the kicker to recover it himself. Yet, that’s exactly what happened.
That bold call from Lanning shifted the momentum and the energy in a soldout Autzen Stadium. The announced attendance was 59,962 — the fourth-largest in the stadium’s history.
From then on, the Ducks would score on their next four offensive possessions including touchdowns to Franklin, Bucky and Cam McCormick.
Oregon’s defense struggled at times to stop UCLA’s dynamic offense, but it came up with key pass breakups, tackles and turnovers to protect its lead.
“It was a really good win, just another one to us though because we prepare every day, every week the same no matter the game,” Ferguson said. “It’s just the same for us. Day in and day out that’s what we expect.”
Oregon dominated in nearly every offensive facet of the game.
The Ducks clinched the battle for time of possession by the late third quarter. They had five more first downs than UCLA. Lanning’s offense gained 525 yards, nearly 100 more than the Bruins.
Achieve those three feats, and this Oregon squad will be in a position to win any game on the schedule.
Next week the Ducks will travel to Berkeley, California. to take on the Golden Bears on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 12:30 p.m.

HARD WORK ON-FIELD SUCCESS
HARD WORK OF THE OREGON OFFENSIVE LINE LEADS TO ON-FIELD SUCCESS
After being dominated by the Georgia Bulldogs on Sept. 3, Oregon football fans could not have imagined their team would be in the position it is now. Now having won six straight, including a critical win against No. 9 UCLA last Saturday, the Ducks find themselves back on the brink of College Football Playoff contention. The spectacular play of Oregon quarterback Bo Nix has been a hot topic of discussion, but much credit is also deserved for his offensive line.
The Oregon offensive line features TJ Bass, Alex Forsyth, Ryan Walk and Malaesala AumavaeLaulu. Bass recently repeated as the Pac-12 Offensive Lineman of the Week for the fourth time in his career. The group has only allowed one sack in seven games this season. For reference, Army led the nation with seven sacks in 13 games last season.
Against UCLA, the offensive line helped Oregon’s offense rack up 545 yards and rushed for more than 200 yards for the fifth time in seven games. The offensive line has not only done a stellar job at protecting Nix, but they have also opened holes for four ball carriers to average over six yards per carry. Their dominance has earned them a spot on
the midseason honor roll for the Joe Moore Award for the most outstanding offensive line.
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning said a lot of credit goes to the senior leaders in the group. He said those players “are like coaches on the field” with the way they understand and study the game. One of those leaders is the senior center Forsyth, who won the Pac-12 offensive lineman award this week.
“If you watch Alex Forsyth work when no one else is working, you’d understand why that offensive line is like it is,” Lanning said. “We’re in chapel today, and Alex Forsyth’s carrying the football around with him in chapel.”
Lanning detailed how Forsyth is one of the first ones to practice going over plays and reviewing calls. It showed on the field on Saturday, as he pointed out the weak side and strong side linebacker before each snap, directing his counterparts to be in the right place. As a center with that responsibility, it could lead to an overload of roles.
Not Forsyth.
The passion and commitment that he embodies appears to be contagious across the offensive line

and throughout the locker room.
Defensive lineman Jordon Riley shared his thoughts on how the closeness of the offensive line has led the team to holistic success.
“I don’t see no other offensive line play as hard as them, and you see it in how well the offense is going right now,” Riley said. “They play hard and physical and they play together.”
Through constant communication and dedication to getting better, the offensive line has helped Nix stay upright. The cohesiveness of the unit has created enough holes that the offense has scored more than 40 points for six straight games, the most by the Ducks since 2014. Oregon will hope for that trend to continue next weekend, as they look to improve to 5-0 in Pac-12 play.
Coming up, Oregon plays at Cal and at Colorado before playing Washington and Utah at home and ending the season at Oregon State. The No. 8 ranked Ducks play in Berkeley at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday on FS1.
