A convincing win over Azusa Pacific on an emotional senior night was exactly how the Ducks’ acro and tumbling team wanted to rebound from its first loss of the season.

Oregon finished its regular season with a commanding 288.08-277.28 win over Azusa Pacific to cap the regular season with a 6-1 record heading into nationals. The Ducks outscored the Cougars in every event, leading the meet from start to finish.

“I think we made some improvements we wanted to make in terms of putting together a full, complete, good meet,” head coach Chelsea Shaw said.

The Ducks raised their scores in multiple events that may have been due in part to some lineup changes.

“We did make a lot of changes this week, so sometimes that can feel a little chaotic when they’re competing for a first time,” Shaw said. “But I thought they did a really good job.”

Oregon took an early 38.80-37.20 lead after the compulsory event.

The Ducks scored 29.35 points in the subsequent acro event, the highest mark in the event this year.

“That was some of the changes we had been making because we’d been losing the acro event almost every meet,” Shaw said. “That’s one of our stronger points here at Oregon. We just haven’t been scoring so well.”

Oregon took a 97.40-95.15 halftime lead following the 29.40-29.35 advantage in the pyramid event.

Following the intermission, Oregon’s good form continued. A dominant toss event (29.35-28.95) included a perfect 10 in the third heat, which featured Alexis Cross, Sabrina Peyton, Taylor Galvin and seniors Jalen Kirkland, Blaire Wilson and Mari Yacoubian.

“We talked a lot about just coming out with pride today and being able to put that up there for everybody was huge,” Cross said of the perfect 10. “We didn’t score very well on that last week, so to come out and get a 10 today was really exciting.”

The tumbling event has been a strong piece of Oregon’s 2017 repertoire. 9.80 in the aerial pass, Taylor Galvin scored a 9.90 in the 6-element singles pass and senior Krista Phillips scored a 9.775 in the open pass to give the Ducks a 57.525-55.15 tumbling event score. “[I’m] just trying to motivate them, pump them up and know that we’re all behind them,” said Cross, who talks one-on-one to each individual event competitor at the start of the second half. “They’re not in those solo events by themselves, but we’re all there right behind them backing them up.”

Oregon had a 184.33-179.25 lead heading into the meet-concluding team event.

The Ducks’ senior ceremony occurred after the team event, which Oregon won 103.75-98.03.

The win gives the Ducks momentum into the NCATA national championships, which start April 27 in Azusa, California.

“We have a couple weeks of preparation but I think for us — this year especially — we want to keep the focus all on us,” Cross said. “We really want to focus on being the best that we can be every day.”

AN OPEN LETTER TO TRUMP SUPPORTERS Dear Trump supporters, I didn’t vote for Trump. I am for abortion rights and pro-socialized medicine. I think welfare programs are for the betterment of society, and I hug trees if left outside for too long. I also don’t think you’re an idiot, a racist or a misogynist because you vote differently than I do.

While the Affordable Care Act repeal bill was set to go to the floor for a vote, I was on a plane. For three hours, I wasn’t connected to the news or social media and didn’t have to feel like a democrat or a republican.

Then we landed.

Within minutes, the cabin was abuzz with the vote’s cancellation and the “failure� of the republicans from some seats and the “stupidity� of the democrats from other rows. I smiled just a bit. I had to. Regardless of political leanings, it was a relief to see my fellow Americans engaged in the conversation.

I’m old enough to have voted in the 2008 election, and I can’t remember a time when people have been as involved in the goings on in Washington D.C. as they are now. The top trends on Facebook are political. The hashtags trending on Twitter are current news stories. For better or worse, we are paying attention to what’s happening in our country and what today’s choices might mean for the future. There’s a conversation taking place. Unfortunately, it’s not a particularly polite conversation.

That’s why I want to direct my words to those who voted for and/ or still support Donald Trump. I disagree with some of your political views. That’s it. That’s all. Why is that disagreement cause for partisan votes that leave our government gridlocked? You think one thing and I think another. And even in that, we agree on more issues than those in congress seem capable of admitting. I support the troops, value the Constitution, support the Second Amendment – as well as background checks, restrictions for domestic abusers and the mentally ill, and an electronic database – and am in favor of religious freedom. But the conversation doesn’t end there.

I support responsible government spending, and I worry that we currently have an administration spending half-a-million dollars a day in order for the first lady to stay in NYC. I support the troops, and I am concerned that at a time when the greatest threat to national security is global warming, we have an administration that cuts funding to the EPA and a president who said global warming was a hoax. I support bringing jobs back to the Midwest and rural areas across the country, and it concerns me that the hostility toward Mexico may result in trade restrictions that will primarily impact the midwestern states.

I don’t agree with you, but I am listening. I’m not convinced I’m right and you’re wrong. I’m not blindly aligning myself with blue or red (sidebar: I’m colorblind so that’s rather difficult for me anyway).

Consider this an olive branch or a cold cider. (Seriously, what does an olive branch even look like and why is that still the go-to peace offering? Cider, folks.) This is me offering a cold cider and asking if we can continue this conversation over a drink.

As the flight began to offload in Boston – a city so ripe with history that a cup dipped in the harbor is best served with milk and sugar – I heard people debate the merits of the bill with those beside them.

I heard people question what will happen with their premiums and what the future of healthcare in the U.S. may look like. This conversation is happening, and I need your opinions just as much as I need my own.

Dear Hillary Clinton supporters, I am not ideologically conservative, but my peers often label me as a conservative.

For context: I oppose abortion and the funding for abortion, I sincerely believe in the First Amendment guarantee for the free exercise of religion and I am opposed to euthanasia. I believe that Supreme Court Nominee Neil Gorsuch is well-qualified to serve as a Supreme Court Justice.

However, I say that I am not ideologically conservative because I also support government funding for women’s reproductive health and crisis pregnancy centers, I sincerely believe in the First Amendment guarantee against an establishment of religion, and I am opposed to capital punishment. I have described my stance on a few issues not because I wish to sway your own stance; I merely want to introduce myself.

I suppose, based upon the views that I listed above, some would label me a moderate conservative. I would not assign that label to myself, but, hey — it’s a free country. In fact, let’s take a moment to talk about labels. Labels can be quite useful when trying to categorize something, such as shoes (high-top basketball sneakers versus wingtip Oxfords). Labels are a fantastic tool for placing like things with other like things.

But labels can be damaging if used inappropriately.

Another label some would apply to me (one that I happily accept) is Catholic. Now, I could end this letter without saying another word, and a multitude of assumptions would be made about me simply because I announced that I am a Catholic. I say this not to mean that we should not use labels at all but simply to advise caution when using labels. As nuanced as shoes can be, people are infinitely more nuanced. While a person may be given a label, we should try to understand a person and their views in the context of their lives.

I oppose abortion because I am truly anti-abortion: I believe in the sanctity of life from beginning to end. I believe life is infinitely valuable, and that a dear price was paid for us to keep ours. My belief in the value of life is why I oppose euthanasia and capital punishment and why I support funding for women’s health issues, especially unwanted pregnancies.

I believe in the free exercise of religion because I want all people of faith (not just those who practice Abrahamic religions) to be free to live according to the dictates of their consciences. By the same token, I believe in the prohibition of the establishment of

religion so that America may truly be a secular society and not a theocracy.

Lastly, I believe that Supreme Court Nominee Gorsuch would serve well as a justice due to his track record of following precedent, his textual approach to statutory interpretation and his advocacy of judicial constraint.

For the record, I did not vote for Donald Trump, so one would not be able to label me a Trump supporter. By using the label “Trump supporter,� however, certain connotations come to mind (fairly or not) — some connotations which may come to mind include “misogynistic, sexist, racist, xenophobic and Islamophobic.�

I do not believe it to be necessarily true that most, or even a majority, of people who voted for President Trump are appropriately characterized by those traits, regardless of what one thinks of Trump himself.

How many times have you heard the term “Trump supporter� or heard someone say “I voted for Trump,� and made assumptions about the person, their views and their character without inquiring further?

Perhaps the person is a Trump supporter because they believe in his promise to increase the number of manufacturing jobs for semi-skilled American workers.

Perhaps the person voted for Trump because the person thinks of the size of the federal government as unconstitutional. Or maybe the person is, in fact, simply a racist bigot who believes that paid maternity leave is frivolous and should be abolished. My point is, a person does not know why another person supports President Trump (or any politician or cause) until one engages in a dialogue with another and tries to listen and understand the person’s perspective.

Labels are misused and abused by people across the political spectrum. Sadly, such misuse and abuse do not serve to unite our country. Rather, our nation simply becomes ever more polarized, divided and splintered due to the baseless assumptions that are made. I am asking you — nay, I am pleading with you: the next time you meet a “conservative� or a “Republican� or even (gasp!) a “Trump supporter,� instead of assuming the person’s views, why not just talk with them? Not just waiting your turn to speak, but truly listening to the person and responding to their thoughts. I promise, engaging with someone with different views won’t hurt.

Faculty cut to make room for research ➥ MAX

Thirty-one faculty members in the College of Arts and Sciences were notified on Thursday that they won’t be hired back by the University of Oregon next year. This comes as no surprise as the university copes with budget deficits; however, some faculty members are concerned that administrators are valuing academic rankings over student success.

The faculty cuts for the romance language department haven’t been finalized yet, and students and faculty are worried about the upcoming decision.

Full time instructors in romance languages teach three classes per term — representing roughly 60 students per term or 180 students a year. If five full-time romance language instructors are cut at the end of the year, the number initially handed down to the department, 900 seats will be unavailable for students trying to take language classes.

plan to improve UO’s status as Oregon’s flagship research institution.

According to Provost and Senior Vice President Scott Coltrane, a research institution’s focus is to train masters and Ph.D. students.

In 2008, enrollment at UO surged. Coltrane said this resulted in a short-term focus on hiring nontenured faculty to accommodate the increase in underclassmen. “What happened [during the surge] is we started looking more toward a teachingintensive university instead of a research university,� Coltrane said. “So we are trying to find that balance.�

In order for the university to achieve its goal, budget cuts are trimming the number of nontenured faculty across campus.

It is very difficult for the university to remove a tenured professor. This makes the College of Arts and Sciences budget difficult to cut because, according to CAS Dean W. Andrew Marcus, 96 percent of the CAS budget is allocated for personnel, meaning instructors are one of the only places to trim weight.

In February, United Academics, the union representing nearly all of the faculty on campus, announced that approximately 75 faculty members will be cut at the end of the year. UO President Michael Schill said the number was pulled out of thin air when he spoke to the Emerald last month, but said that some faculty member cuts were imminent.

The basis for cutting non-tenured faculty is to make room for more tenured faculty members down the line.

Tenured faculty — professors who have the security of a job until they retire, break the law or severely violate university policy — are responsible for conducting research and publishing their findings in addition to their teaching and service duties. Non-tenured faculty are hired either on 1- or 3-year contracts.

Their duties are more narrowly focused on teaching and rarely include research or publishing obligations. “The assumption is, for undergraduates, if you’re in the classroom with someone who is actually writing the books and doing the discoveries, then it’s going to be more enriching,�

Coltrane said. “On a case-by-case basis that’s not always true, some of our very best instructors are non-tenure track faculty and they’re specialists in being instructors and they’re really good.�

Although these instructors may provide a better classroom experience for students, that experience doesn’t factor into how the school is ranked. Instead, rankings are based on the amount of patents the institution holds, what it discovers and how many grants it gets, according to Coltrane.

language department say that focusing on tenured faculty and rankings runs directly against the university’s mission statement to serve as a “comprehensive public research university committed to exceptional teaching, discovery and service.� “We can’t afford to eliminate language programs or decrease the number of students who can get access to studying language in an environment in which globalization is so important, in which international understanding is so important,� said Gina Psaki, professor of Italian.

According to President Schill, the amount of money each department receives from the university is determined by the number of credit hours the department serves. Because fewer students are enrolling in humanities courses, those departments are not earning as much revenue as they once did. The overall effect of the low enrollment is driving down the need for nontenure track faculty.

For Schill, this seems inevitable. “The nature of non-tenured faculty is that they are not here permanently. They are here year to year,� Schill said. “... there’s a hardship in that,

which is you don’t know if you have a job or not, but that is the point of non-tenured faculty, is that they are meeting teaching needs that are not constant.”

Psaki, who holds tenure in the romance language department, has been at UO since 1989 and currently serves as the assistant department head of romance languages in addition to her research, publishing and teaching duties. According to her, the romance language department relies on many of the non-tenured faculty’s expertise in teaching introductory courses.

“I can teach first and second year languages,” Psaki said, “but I’m not very good at it. My colleagues who are nontenure track faculty members … they have immense experience” Despite the value some of these instructors may bring to their departments, they don’t fit into the university’s long-term plan.

Amanda Powell is a non-tenured faculty member whose work compares to that of her tenure track colleagues. She is involved in research and publication as well as teaching upper division and graduate level

language courses.

“Our teaching load is high. We are really dedicated to our classes,” said Powell, a senior lecturer II in Spanish. “It’s really disheartening to know that without regard to the quality of our teaching [or] the quality of our program, a number of positions are going to be cut purely on the basis of metrics.”

Schill’s new three-tiered budget model is supposed to rein in department spending by 2019 and bring UO’s balance of tenured and non-tenured faculty back into line with other research institutions.

Although this new model will help curb the budget and prevent future cuts, it doesn’t account for the instructors or classes that will disappear in the short term.

Increased interest in professional schools like business and journalism will mean more revenue is injected into those programs while less popular departments will face continued uncertainty.

“For me it remains the case that this is a comprehensive university,” Psaki said. “You can’t feed one division by starving others.”

“It’s really disheartening to know that without regard to the quality of our teaching [or] the quality of our program, a number of positions are going to be cut purely on the basis of metrics.”

The average distance between the moon and Earth is 238,857 miles.

Earth’s moon is the fifth largest in the solar system with a radius of 1,079 miles. Earth’s radius is 3,959 miles, and one of Jupiter’s moons, named Ganymede, is the largest moon in the solar system with a radius of 1,635 miles.

The moon rotates on its axis in approximately the same amount of time it takes to orbit Earth. That means humans almost always see the same side of the moon.

Gravity on the moon is 17 percent the strength of gravity on Earth.

The Soviet Union’s Luna program landed the first unmanned spacecraft on the moon in 1966.

Apart from the novelty riffs of Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop� and its countless copycats — Ariana Grande’s “Problem,� Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty� and Fifth Harmony’s “Worth It� — there isn’t enough saxophone in modern pop.

Luckily, Moon Hooch — which just played at the Hi-Fi Music Hall Saturday night — is pulling its weight by employing the sax to its utmost potential. Moon Hooch has traces of EDM in its barbaric and decadent jazz-fusion, but it’s not derivative of these pop artists; it’s more like jazz on crack. Similar to if Kenny G were abducted by aliens, came back and produced a dubstep album — it’s mesmerizing. Words can’t sufficiently sum up a Moon Hooch live show, but it’s the first time I’ve ever strongly related to the hipsters who are losing their minds at the jazz club in that old photograph.

James Muschler, who lays down a trance-like, rhythmic layer under the woodwind duo. Muschler had a sweaty mop of hair stuck to his face and played the drums with such violence and enthusiasm that he is the closest human representation I’ve ever seen of Animal from the Muppets.

The two-hour set was something of an endurance challenge, for audience and artist alike. The Moon Hooch catalog is virtually interchangeable; it’s near impossible to tell when one song starts and another one begins because even individual songs halt and change up every few measures.

But there was never a moment of silence between tracks, and it was hard to distinguish improvisation from premeditation. At one point, McGowen crammed an orange construction post down the bell of his sax and made that baby purr. In another moment, I’m pretty sure Wilbur solo-played something by Philip Glass for a full minute. It’s not

the kind of fare one expects to hear half past midnight at a downtown Eugene bar The three met as students at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. The group’s first few gigs were on the street busking on NYC subway platforms, where they inspired plenty of impromptu dance parties before being banned from playing (in at least one station) by the NYPD. (The Moon Hooch saga is published in full on its Bandcamp page.)

Moon Hooch purportedly calls itself “cave musicâ€? (/ ˈkÄ v myoÍžozik / — “like house, but more wild, jagged, more free, more natural to live in.â€?) It’s even the name of its sophomore 2014 album: “This Is Cave Music.â€? It makes about as much sense as you would expect from a group that names itself after bootleg liquor procured on the Earth’s natural satellite.

Regardless of terrain — be it cosmic or subterranean — never miss a chance to see Moon Hooch.

TO SPACE AND BACK: THE STORY OF UO’S

‘MOON TREE’ ➥ SARAROSA

While walking along 13th Avenue on the University of Oregon’s campus, one encounters countless types of trees with intriguing origins and interesting names, but few trees have a story like UO’s “Moon Tree.

Located between the EMU and Carson Hall is the Moon Tree, a seemingly regular Douglas Fir. Upon first look, there’s nothing particularly special about this tree except for the benches around it and a plaque on the ground that reads “Moon Tree (Douglas fir).� The Moon Tree was germinated from a seed that had been to the moon in the 1970s.

In January 1971, the US launched its third manned mission to the moon, Apollo 14. Astronaut Stuart Roosa, who used to work for the United States Forest Service, brought a variety of tree seeds on board the aircraft.

According to the Register-Guard, one of these 500 seeds made its way to UO’s campus. After returning from the moon, the seeds were germinated around the country and then sent out to a variety of places and organizations.

According to Jane Brubaker, a campus landscape designer in Facilities Services, UO received the germinated seedling, rather than the seed or tree itself. She said that at the time, “The deciduous trees probably just looked like sticks, but our Douglas fir would have looked like a mini-tree.�

The tree was planted in 1976, the same year as the university’s centennial, according to the Register Guard. There are a few other Moon Trees around Oregon, including one at Oregon State University and one near the capitol building in Salem.

Once UO’s Moon Tree arrived on campus in the ‘70s, its story didn’t end there. According to Brubaker, the tree was originally planted where Willamette Hall is now, but in order to accommodate the growing science complex, the tree was replanted in 1987.

On University Day in 2003, the plaque and benches around the tree were added to commemorate the tree’s history.

Today passersby stop to look at the plaque every so often. To Brubaker and others, the tree serves as a reminder of the moon missions from the 1960s and ‘70s. UO includes the tree as the first stop on a self-guided campus tree tour, but otherwise the tree looks pretty normal despite having out-of-thisworld origins.

NASA employee Dr. David R. Williams runs a website cataloging Moon Trees around the country.

According to the site, there are a total of six in Oregon at the present moment. Dr. Williams’ website was last updated in June 2016. He encourages those who find other moon trees to email him as they aren’t all catalogued.
