Faculty start online petition to save Substance Abuse Prevention Program ➥ SARAROSA

Faculty of the University of Oregon’s substance abuse counseling program are petitioning to save their program after UO announced its termination last Wednesday. The online petition currently has 377 of its 500-signature goal.

The Wednesday announcement from the college of education calls for cutting the Substance Abuse Prevention Program in fall 2017. Eighteen non-tenure track instructor positions will also be cut with the program.

But many faculty members in the SAPP program are upset that the school hasn’t put effort into making the changes needed to save the program.

Program director Ruth Bischel said that SAPP leadership has addressed the issues by submitting over 35 proposals to fix the program but has been “blocked by the department.� SAPP meets all state standards for accreditation and is the only academic Certified Prevention Specialist program in the state, she wrote in an email to the Emerald. “If you do not have the support of your department, essential changes cannot be made,� Bischel wrote.

The dean of the College of Education, Randy Kamphaus, could not be reached by the Emerald by phone or email. Kamphaus wrote the letter announcing SAPP’s termination.

Bischel wants an external review of the program and said that she feels the COE review was biased. Despite SAPP faculty adapting the coursework to meet other academic requirements, the program is still being cut.

Kamphaus’ letter stated that three reasons for cutting the program include course difficulty, quality of teaching and SAPP courses not being eligible for degree programs.

The petition, created on April 24 at change.org, emphasizes the need for research-based addiction treatment.

A statement on the petition says, “During a time in which many vulnerable populations are under threat and addictions education and programming are increasing all over the country, this is not the time to eliminate or divert this essential communityconscious program.�

UO sociology major Kristine Swinson takes classes in the program and earned 22 SAPP credits. She says it is an essential part of the community because she has seen the toll of addiction both personally and as a child protection services employee. “The thought of this program being eliminated worries me as an individual but also as a long-term resident of Eugene,� Swinson wrote in an email. “Every SAPP class that I have taken has been interesting, very informative and has contained critical educational material for my career choice.�

Midterms make for a very busy few weeks each term when many students are on the go and struggle to keep up with sleep and meals. One option for keeping your sugar levels up throughout the day is to blend together a quick smoothie that can be taken to go. Smoothies are an easy way to incorporate some fruit and protein into your diet, both of which can help keep you going during a busy day.

Manzil Midrash: A meeting of the minds ➥ SARAROSA

Most University of Oregon students never cross military checkpoints or narrowly miss suicide bombs, but for some, the violence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can’t be escaped — even when living 7,000 miles away.

Students gathered in the EMU Amphitheater on Tuesday to celebrate Israel’s 69th Independence Day at the Israel Block Party. People flowed in and out of the amphitheater throughout the day, tasting food from Caspian Mediterranean Cafe and olive oil while Israeli music blared from speakers.

Organizations such as Akiva, Ducks for Israel, Stand With Us and J Street U all hosted booths exploring different aspects of Israeli politics and society. Although the event was bustling with students sharing food and taking pictures, some did not embrace the festivities. Some found the event insensitive.

For many Palestinians, Israeli Independence Day is known as the Nakba, which is the Arabic word for “catastrophe.� A small group of student protesters stood in front of the Israel Block Party holding signs opposing occupation and supporting Palestinian rights.

Protesters carried signs that quoted Angela Davis and tweets from Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu. One held up a sign that said: “From Standing Rock to Palestine: Occupation is a crime.�

Organizers of the Israel Block Party didn’t engage with demonstrators directly; however, some students from the event listened to what the protesters had to say. “It is never going to be perfect, but it starts with a conversation,� Jewish student Joel Jacobs wrote about his interaction with the protesters.

As illustrated in a 2016 New York Times article, divisive confrontations between Palestinian and Jewish and Israeli community members are common on college campuses in the United States.

debate flares up.

In 2001, the first chapter of the student activist group Students for Justice in Palestine was created at Berkeley. In September 2016, the tension between SJP and Jewish groups received national attention when a course called “Palestine: A Settler Colonial Analysis� was suspended. The two communities debated whether the course was anti-semitic, but eventually the course was reinstated.

In the last three years, UO students have engaged in dialogue surrounding the international conflict — bringing the two sides together to hash out their differences and to see the humanity in the other, according to Mohammed Astal, a Palestinian student from the Gaza Strip.

The Arab Student Union, Muslim Student Association, Jewish Student Union and UO Hillel sponsor a community-building event series called Manzil Midrash. Manzil is the name of a Hillel donor and “midrash� means commentary in Hebrew.

The conversation series covers topics such as the role of Jerusalem and socialist movements in the Middle East.

Astal, an undeclared freshman, said he feels the need to have dialogues like these. He takes every chance he can to engage with the conflict in a constructive manner while talking to others about his life growing up in the city of Khan Younis.

Astal’s father, Kamal Al Astal, is originally from Khan Younis, while his mother, Sameera Al Hamidah, is considered a refugee because her family is from a city north of Jerusalem called ar-Ramleh. Her parents fled to Gaza, west of Jerusalem, in 1948.

Due to his mother’s refugee status, Astal is also considered a refugee and attended a school run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency while growing up. The organization provides aid to Palestinian refugees. According to Astal, the organization has also expanded its mission to Iraqi and Syrian refugees in recent years.

While living in Gaza, Astal earned a scholarship from the U.S. State Department to be an exchange student. He spent his junior year of high school in Portland, but his arrival in Oregon was delayed by two months because of military conflict taking place in the Gaza Strip and Israel during the summer of 2014. Astal lost his cousin in the violence.

After returning to Gaza, Astal applied to UO. He now turns his traumatic experiences into dialogue.

He gives presentations at different churches and synagogues and speaks frequently about his story as a Palestinian. Astal worries about the danger of only telling one narrative. “You just have to be interculturally competent, to know the other side,� Astal said. “I don’t care about the past. I know it’s really significant but I just talk about my experiences as a human being living in Gaza and losing friends and losing family.�

UO senior Barkeley Saltzman, although not Israeli, is taking a leadership role in the dialogue on campus.

Saltzman, who will attend a graduate program in conflict resolution and mediation at Tel Aviv University next year, helps run Manzil Midrash.

He was in Israel during the Second Intifada (Arabic for “shake off�), a Palestinian uprising. He was visiting his family and shortly after they left a pizza place, a suicide bomb exploded there.

He has attended Manzil Midrash the last 3 years and now leads the program. Saltzman believes that these conversations are positive contributions to UO’s campus climate and that each person should speak for themselves and not his or her group as a whole. “This is exactly what we need,� Saltzman said of the bridge between Jewish, Muslim, Arab and Palestinian students that Manzil Midrash creates.

On April 25, about 20 students came together as part of the series to talk about Arab and Jewish nationalist movements and their role in Israel and Palestine.

Oddisee talks uniting people through music on his new album ➥ ZACH

Amir Mohamed, better known by his stage name, Oddisee, is a member of a rare breed of rapper that seems to be dying out with every passing year: He produces all of his own music, his lyrics focus on social issues and he’s never used the n-word on a track.

Oddisee’s music isn’t the only reason he’s an anomaly among the current pool of rappers. His background is quite different from many of his peers. He grew up in Prince George’s County, Maryland, which is the wealthiest African American county in the United States. There, he was raised by an African-American mother and a Sudanese father who taught him the virtues of Islam.

Now 32, Oddisee has turned a small niche audience into a large cult following. He music is a well-blended mix of R&B and hip-hop that he has developed with his prolific work ethic, which he says he got from his mother, who hasn’t missed a day of work in 20 years.

On Tuesday, Oddisee will perform with his band Good Company at WOW Hall. His current tour is in support of his 11th studio album, “The Iceberg,� which was released in February. On the record, Oddisee attempts to break down social barriers. He says the best way to solve social issues in the world is for people to find common ground, which he attempts to accomplish with his music. “I wanted people who listen to me from all across the world to realize that many of the same issues that are occurring in the states are actually occurring elsewhere,� Oddisee told the Emerald in a phone interview. “People think that things are exclusive to them or their trials and tribulations in general are exclusive to their people or them personally, when in fact, these are things that everyone is experiencing PA G E 2

around the world.�

Oddisee attained this insight by traveling the globe and meeting people from different cultures throughout his 15-year professional career. In his travels, he has gained a more holistic perspective of the world around him and is worried about the direction that the society is headed. “We’re moving to being an ultra-conservative society,� Oddisee said. “A lot of fear mongering is used to persuade the masses and it made me worried about the lack of critical thinking that I’ve witnessed across the globe. People are taking things at face value and not taking the time to understand why things are the way they are.�

As a Sudanese-American Muslim man, Oddisee felt compelled to write an album that deals with issues that are pertinent to his life and his experiences. Although he has taken a political stance with his most recent album, Oddisee says it is unreasonable to burden musicians with the responsibility of inciting political discourse through their lyrics. “We’re artists,� Oddisee said. “We didn’t go and get a degree in Poli-sci, but many artists are expected to act is if they have. I don’t necessarily think that’s fair.�

While it might be unfair to hold artists accountable for their music to be socially conscious, Oddisee says that he holds the music industry accountable. According to him, plenty of musicians have important messages but don’t receive the same opportunities and resources as other artists. “A majority of the world doesn’t have access to a higher education,� Oddisee said. “A good portion of the world is below the poverty line, yet we expect everyone to be socially conscious. But we know

that oftentimes social consciousness comes with privilege of education and access to information.

For musicians like Oddisee, their greatest challenge is reaching audiences who don’t have the resources to understand the complicated concepts that are often featured in their songs. Making a song that delivers an important message and is also something that people want to listen to is easier said than done. “I think artists like Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper and even myself are doing a good job of making music that’s entertaining and appealing, but also delivers a message at the same time,� Oddisee said. “If you are an artist who is concerned about the welfare of people who don’t have the same amount of resources as other human beings, there are ways of incorporating a message that is digestible. It’s not the easy route obviously, but there are ways of doing it.�

Oddisee said certain audiences are unable to relate to his music, and people who haven’t had the resources to contemplate the social issues he’s rapping about don’t listen to his music because they face a different reality than he does. Instead, those people listen to music that reflects their environment. Oddisee said they are worried about surviving on a day-to-day basis and it’s difficult for them to think about issues that don’t have an immediate effect on their lives.

Oddisee will continue to spread messages through his music while trying to reach those untapped audiences, but his career goal is a much simpler task: “Making music; Making art. I want to live to make music. That’s it.�

After the presentations, the group split into two smaller discussions and talked about how these movements manifest today. After about half an hour, the group came back together to discuss in a larger setting.

People’s contributions ranged from talking about Israel on social media to how pride ties into perceptions of culture.

Although tense moments arose, most came from disagreement between two members of the same community rather than those with opposite viewpoints.

Collective laughter rang through the room as one student accidentally called the Palestinian Liberation Organization, the PLC instead of the correct acronym, PLO. Comedic moments like these provided common ground for the discussion to go deeper, and although some disagreed, the discussion was mediated to keep the conversation on topic.

When Manzil Midrash started four years ago, MSA member Drew Williams and his partners in the Jewish Student Union created guidelines to structure these discussions. For Williams, what makes Manzil Midrash different than interfaith discussions on other campuses is UO’s culture.

“Other ones have gotten less amicable than ours and more heated and political. Ours is kind of unique,” Williams said.

Though the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is much bigger than the campus community, Williams said that the conversations happening at UO provide a valuable space for all students involved, if only for a moment.

Saltzman, Williams and Astal said they believe that seeing the humanity in the other side is something worth striving for.

“They want to build relationships; they want to learn,” Williams said about the members of the two communities. “They want to be a part of something that may lead to something bigger and better.”

The French elections have caused a lot of French voters to consider what defines their ‘Frenchness.’ (Creative Commons)

French elections question how culture will live on I sometimes imagine what it will be like when I go back to Tualatin, the suburb of Portland where I grew up, in fifty years. I used to have a rosy dream that I would come back and nothing would have changed; however, in fifty years, with the rapid spread of globalization, it is likely that I will see nothing familiar, if only the dead carcass of a town I grew up in.

This sentiment is being felt right now by many older citizens of France during their presidential elections. The sudden advent of globalization and increased immigration has changed the French landscape and has many yearning for the France they once knew.

The runoff election features two candidates: one being centrist and pro-EU candidate Emmanuel Macron and the other being Marine Le Pen, who is a nationalist and supports France breaking with the European Union.

What is most notable about Le Pen’s political stances is her strong position against more immigration into France. During a rally before the first round of presidential elections, which were on April 23, Le Pen questioned whether we will “be able to live much longer as French people in France, while entire neighborhoods are being transformed.� Le Pen went on to say, “It is right for us not to want our country transformed into a mere corridor, a giant railway station.� This protectionist stance for France exposes the growing feelings of angst and worry about where French culture is going.

dential runoff election. “The very rapid and very stark changes are making a whole generation, actually multiple generations, ask that question of what it means to be French,� Dickey said.

What many people view as “French� is what Dickey refers to as “La France Profonde,� or the deep France in the countryside that is the heart of French cuisine, language and customs.

However, as Dickey explains, due to globalization young people move out of their hometowns to large cities where there are more jobs. In turn, there has been a decline in these French country towns that hold so much of France’s culture, and this is tied to the decline of ‘Frenchness.’ “There are people in their fifties and sixties who have tried very valiantly to keep their regional traditions alive amongst the young people,� Dickey said.

Despite the efforts being made to preserve the ‘Frenchness’ of towns, she said, “they’re dying.� She paused and said, “It doesn’t matter. Their efforts will eventually fade as each generation cares less and less.�

The imminent death of what so many hold onto as their own, as their culture, how they see France and how they identify their hometown is rapidly deteriorating and disintegrating into the wind. It gives me pause. This phenomenon is not isolated only to France or Europe — it has happened and will continue to happen here in the United States. “You will remember things that you grew up with, and eventually those will go too,� Dickey

said. “You see the richness of it. You see what the value is.�

This hits me hard. Soon, I will be old and the world will have changed without my consent, for better or for worse. My once recognizable hometown will be foreign to me. This is something that so many people of older generations in France are experiencing right now as they see their once thriving regional towns and local cultures slowly die as the newer generations decide to go in a different direction. It is hard to blame many French people for voting for a return to what they held as beautiful and right about their country. I cannot pretend that I will always be immune to that impulse.

The train of globalization has already left the station because the momentum it has gained is now almost irreversible. The dramatic change from our new world economy has already swept across towns that relied on local industry, and the effects from this emphatic shift are starting to be felt culturally and politically.

Young people should take pause when thinking about the onset of globalization, as well as the higher levels of artificial intelligence that will inevitably replace many jobs, and take into consideration the effects that it may have on the way a nation identifies with its culture. The situation in France is a testament to that conflict.

In a cost-cutting move last week, the College of Education notified professor Kevin Alltucker that his hours were being reduced, making him decide to leave his job at the University of Oregon.

Alltucker was technically not laid off, he said. He has been part-time for the past 13 years but has taught classes in several departments on campus – Family and Human Services, Planning, Public Policy and Management, and the Clark Honors College – in order to have enough hours to get benefits.

When the College of Education told him they were cutting his Family and Human Services hours down to the point where he would no longer get benefits, he decided to leave.

Alltucker will teach for the rest of the term but won’t return after that.

This cut is part of the initiative the university is taking to cut costs and increase the ratio of students to tenure-track faculty, but Alltucker said he is concerned that students’ needs will not be met with that plan. “I believe in students and that’s why I’ve taught for the past 13 years,� he said. “I believe in the wisdom of students to go out and make the world a better place.�

On May 1, Alltucker tweeted the news that he would no longer be teaching classes.

Dozens of current and former

students have responded to the tweet, voicing how upset they are to see him leave and noting the difference he made in their college and professional careers.

One student, Hannah Contreras, said the news of his departure is devastating and an unfortunate decision. “Kevin reminded his students every day that we could change the world, and he fostered our selfconfidence both inside and outside of the classroom to go out and be agents of change,� she said.

On the professor-review website ratemyprofessors.com, Alltucker has glowing reviews. He has a 4.8/5 overall rating, based on 58 student responses.

Someone started a closed Facebook group called “Save FHS – Keep Kevin Alltucker,� that currently has 188 members as of May 3.

Alltucker grew up, went to school and has strong ties in Eugene and plans to stay in the city to pursue a new interest. He does not have any definite plans for the future but is not worried, he said. “To hear from past students and current students and how much they value the FHS program, that’s fantastic,� he said. “But it shouldn’t be about me — it should be about how this university is going to serve the needs of students.�
