PARKING AVAILABILITY REMAINS AN ISSUE

In October of 2015, Journalism Instructor Kathryn Kuttis started a hashtag with her three-hundred-student media professions class — #IPayForItButThey. The campaign originally started to create community among students but turned into an effort to fix problems with UO parking, especially parking availability.

“Parking happens to be something that we all struggle with to find a solution for,” said Kuttis. “No one wants to be late for something because they can’t find a parking space.”

Kuttis said that the UO Department of Parking and Transportation hasn’t been transparent in its communication efforts, particularly with warning community members when spaces are unavailable due to events.

“I think, in fact, that they are part of our community and trying to do what’s right,” Kuttis said. “But maybe that doesn’t come out if you’re not communicating.”

UO graduate Karly Tarsia was part of the initial hashtag effort from Kuttis and said she and her fellow students liked the idea.

“I had complained so many times to the parking office about how unfairly they treated us and how they viewed us as a bottom line,” she said. “I understand they have policies, but they need to be honest and flexible. I’m The Emerald is published

not paying to be yelled at for parking, and that’s what I felt like I was doing.”

Tarsia said that the UO needs to start addressing the parking issue and “not just give some lame messaging point.”

Field Operations Supervisor James McGladrey said that the department supports active transportation and encourages commuters to be mindful of their environmental footprint.

“As a residential campus, most students walk or bike, so the center of campus is pedestrian and bicycle-focused,” said McGladrey. “Most parking is on the perimeter of campus.”

He said he also understands, though, that these modes of transportation aren’t realistic for everyone.

The UO has around 3,950 total parking spaces, according McGladrey. The Department of Parking and Transportation issues 1,000 student daytime or commuter permits in an average year.

Still, finding parking is a challenge for some students.

“The whole campus is congested, but anything within a football field radius of the EMU is almost impossible to get through while driving,” junior Sierra Leeann said.

She said that maybe the UO Department of Parking and Transportation could create a more accessible parking area for students.

“Maybe if it was in a central location and students knew that they could park there, students wouldn’t spend ten to fifteen minutes driving around looking for a spot to park,” she said.

The lack of parking has caused some students like Jordan Pickrel to use city and residential parking.

“While I do appreciate that the scarcity of parking on campus encourages students and staff to bike or bus to campus,” Pickrel said, “I also think that it could be beneficial to consider options like parking garages to increase accessibility to parking.”

However, some students disagree.

“Providing more parking would go against the campus commute goal of reducing single occupancy use,” said UO graduate student Justin Peterson. “Most students can conveniently walk, bike or ride the bus.”

LiveMove president Stephanie Napa agrees. LiveMove is a student group that promotes active transportation.

“It’s weird that we’re paying all these taxes to create this space for a private person to park their private car for a period of time,” Napa said. “If people are going to be using that public space, they should be charged for that space since we’re all paying for the pavement and the maintenance and the costs that are associated with that parking space.”

Veterans Appreciation Week honored student veterans on campus this week.

Although the week featured a variety of events, the university environment is lacking inclusiveness, according to many event organizers and student veterans.

The Veterans Program puts on events because the organization believes that student veterans matter, and so do their specific needs, according to Samantha Roberts, the Veterans Program Graduate Employee Coordinator.

“These are individuals that sacrificed a great deal to be here. They deserve more,” said Roberts.

According to Roberts, there are about 400 student veterans enrolled during the academic year. Without a full-time coordinator, it can be difficult to meet all the student veterans needs, Roberts explained.

Roberts is the only program coordinator for the Veterans Program at the UO, and she’s doing it part-time while also going to graduate school. According to Roberts, Western Oregon University has between 100 and 150 student veterans, but they’ve hired a full-time Veterans Program Coordinator to make sure all student veterans’ needs are being met.

VETERANS WEEK: Continued from page 3

Roberts said the Veterans Program is there to help student veterans “transition and acclimate� to a new type of environment. The university environment can be a particularly tough transition for student veterans because of all the different life experiences they have, according to Roberts.

Roberts explained that many student veterans in a university environment feel that the university is doing the bare minimum to “check off a box.� “Really, every day ought to be Veterans Day,� said University of Oregon Provost and Senior Vice President Jayanth Banavar at the “Unity of Commitment� ceremony on Friday that concluded Veterans Appreciation Week. “Every day is a day that we should think about you, we should celebrate you and we should do all we can to be there for you,� he said.

Being a part of the Veterans Program provides an opportunity to talk about the issue of student veterans’ needs not being met, according to Roberts. “You don’t know what you don’t know,� she said. “This is a very specific group of people who are also very diverse in their needs.�

Leah Crewse is the president of the Veteran and Family Student Association (VFSA) and is also a student veteran. She served active duty in the Air Force from 20092013. Currently, Crewse is a part of the Air Force reservists, where she goes to Joint Base Lewis-McChord one weekend a month to keep up with her medic certifications and trainings. She also dedicates 15 consecutive days out of the year to the reservist program. “I think it is vital,� said Crewse of Veterans Appreciation Week. “There are so many student veterans that feel a bit alienated because of their life experiences,� she said.

According to Crewse, because the UO is a public four-year university and many students come from a traditional background, it can be difficult for student veterans to relate to other students and feel like they fit into the university environment.

Crewse said the VFSA is there to empower other student veterans. “We’re your voice...if you don’t attend the events we can’t hear you,� she said.

Joelle Rankins Goodwin is the senior associate director for recruitment administration, and was the keynote speaker for the “Unity of Commitment� ceremony. “We are always brothers and sisters in arms,� said Goodwin. “We PA G E 4

have each other’s backs. That is our commitment to one another.�

Roberts is responsible for organizing Veterans Appreciation Week, along with other events throughout the year. The VFSA and the University President’s Office also partner with the Veterans Program for the week’s events.

According to Roberts, this week is the largest Veterans Program event of the year, and she’s been planning it since the summer.

The week kicked off on Monday, Nov. 6 with the Student Veteran Center, Peer Advisors for Veteran Education, and the VFSA tabling outside the ERB Memorial Union Terrace to let people know about Veterans Appreciation Week.

Monday also started “Operation Toiletries,� a fundraiser benefitting homeless veterans.

This was the first year that “Operation Toiletries� has been a part of Veterans Appreciation Week.

The fundraiser was a student’s idea that was hosted by the Veterans Program. Items donated include soap, shampoo, conditioner, razors, toilet paper, nail trimmers, feminine products and other toiletry items.

The donations were collected at the Erb Memorial Union Terrace Veterans Program booth, as well as the Student Veteran Center. On Friday, Nov. 10, the donations were collected by St. Vincent de Paul’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families, and on Saturday, Nov. 11 the organization handed out these donations to the veterans experiencing homelessness in Lane County.

Many student veterans participated in other Veterans Appreciation Week events, like Wednesday’s free brunch provided by the Student Veterans Center, and Thursday’s community night which included mini golf, laser tag and bowling at Putters in Eugene.

The “Unity of Commitment� ceremony wrapped up Veterans Appreciation Week, honoring all student veterans in the Gerlinger Lounge on Friday. All UO students were welcome to help honor student veterans at the ceremony, which was sponsored by the Office of the President.

The ceremony also welcomed student veteran Michael Thomas as a speaker. Thomas urged UO students to go further than thanking veterans around campus for their service and to also ask if they need anything. “Asking that question to the right veteran may just keep one of the 22 of us who commit suicide every day from doing so,� said Thomas.

DUCKS, BEAVERS COMPETE IN CIVIL WAR BLOOD DRIVE

BY BECCA ROBBINS • TWITTER @BROBBINSUO Ducks and Beavers fans across Oregon are feeling the buzz of the upcoming Civil War game, but they don’t have to be in a football uniform to participate.

The 16th annual Civil War Blood Drive kicked off Nov. 1 and continues until Nov. 19, allowing Oregonians to vote for either school when donating blood across the state. The blood drive will come to Lillis Business Complex and the EMU on Nov. 13-17, giving students a chance to help bring the trophy back to Eugene.

Last year, OSU beat UO by just 476 votes, one of the closer results, after the Ducks crushed the Beavers by 774 in 2015.

OSU has won eight times while UO has won seven.

Each person who donates will be entered into a raffle to win two tickets to the Civil War football game, and this year’s trophy will be awarded at the game.

In the past 15 years of the Civil War Blood Drive, Oregonians have donated 102,129 times in the name of the Ducks or the Beavers. The donations peaked in 2009-2012, seeing over 8,000 votes almost every year. Since then, the competition has been declining with just 4,782 votes last year. “Students don’t tend to have a lot of financial resources, and a lot of campaigns are about donating money,� Lane

Bloodworks Program Manager Casey Zerbe said. “Blood is something that we all have and most of us are able to donate, but most of us don’t donate.

It’s a way for a student to really feel empowered and feel like they can make a difference in their community.�

With the arrival of the cold temperatures and winter rain, Zerbe said this is the time of year when it’s especially important to donate. “Once the holidays hit, a lot of people start to travel,� she said. “People also get sick and then can’t donate. As the weather can get a little more hazardous, the need for blood can increase because people get into accidents. We want to have enough for everyone in case of emergencies.�

One donation can save up to three lives, according to Zerbe. “If we hit our goal of 80 donors a day, that’s 240 lives that can be saved by UO students,� Zerbe said.

Zerbe also wants to remind those looking to donate blood to eat a protein-packed meal at least four hours in advance, drink a lot of water and bring identification. “We look for ways to meet people where they’re passionate, and the Civil War is something Oregonians just go crazy for,� said Zerbe. “It can make blood donation fun to add some competition into the mix.�

NEW FRATERNITY AND SORORITY LIFE DIRECTOR AIMS TO IMPROVE GREEK COMMUNITY

UO’s newest Fraternity and Sorority Life Director Caitlin Roberts sits at her desk in the FSL office, already at home in the position she has had for about six weeks. She smiles as she bounces her four-year old son, AJ, in her lap.

The reason for Roberts’ hiring was that the University of Oregon had lost its previous FSL director, Justin Shukas, when he suddenly resigned in the spring to pursue a job in human resources in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Roberts was then hired on Oct. 2.

Her job is mostly to provide structure in the office at the moment, as the staff is relatively new, and to cover the administrative side of the FSL department. “It’s a great place to start fresh and build this program,�

Roberts said.

Being a mother has changed Roberts’ perspective on relationships between life and work. She also feels that she can better relate to the parents of the students involved in FSL life, also called Greek life.

When a student was feeling lonely and left out because she had missed recruitment, her mother reached out to Roberts.

It made Roberts think about how she would feel if that was her child.

For Roberts, Greek life has been an important aspect of her own life, even when she was young. Her mother is a member of the sorority Gamma Phi Beta, and her grandfather was part of the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon. “It was always a part of me,�

Roberts said. Roberts herself is a member of the Kappa Delta sorority, joining while in her undergraduate years at California State University in San Bernardino.

From there, Roberts moved

on to Pepperdine University to get her master’s degree in psychology.

Since then, Roberts has worked in higher education for 17 years, holding positions at colleges such as Chapman University, Long Beach State University and even the University of Oregon as the panhellenic adviser from 2004 to 2005. Within the past two years, Roberts has also worked at the University of North Georgia.

Most of these jobs were FSLrelated, with the exception of Chapman University, where she worked as the alumni relations manager.

Her love of the west coast led her to come back to UO, where she was hired as the FSL Director in October. “I’ve always had a special place for Oregon in my heart,�

Roberts said. “I’ve been a Ducks fan since I was here last. It just really made a lot of sense for us [to come back].�

Roberts’ primary goals for FSL life at UO is to build relationships and strengthen communications within the program.

The FSL Assistant Director, Tayler Marshall, has only been with the program for a year, and the office is looking to hire a second assistant director and an office manager soon.

Roberts says she also wants to work on the emerging multicultural Greek life community at the university. “My plan is to provide more support to those organizations: get them engaged, and [get them] to grow,� Roberts said.

Roberts faces challenges when it comes to accepting the role of FSL Director but has a positive outlook when it comes to the role. “[This is] a really exciting time for FSL,� Roberts said.

đ&#x;”Ś NEWS “MOVEMBERâ€? RAISES AWARENESS FOR MEN’S HEALTH ON CAMPUS

BY HANNAH KANIK • TWITTER @HANNAH_KANIK Growing mustaches in November is fun, but it also benefits a mission for men’s health. The “Movemberâ€? movement took place on campus this year for the second time.

Movember is a global movement aimed at raising funds and awareness for men’s health by encouraging participants to grow unique mustaches. The participants promote their mustaches through social media to raise money and awareness for men’s health. The Movember foundation also hosts various events throughout the year to raise awareness and funds for the cause.

It was brought to the UO campus by Eric Garcia last year.

Nikita Ramakrishnan, a senior at UO and the Movember coordinator on campus, worked with the counseling center’s Outreach Coordinator Suzie Stadelman to create an inclusive event on campus for all genders to support men’s health.

At UO, there are several events throughout the month of November aimed at raising awareness and making a lasting impact on students, according to Ramakrishnan. “The college age is hugely about identity development,� Ramakrishnan said. “I think that it’s a pivotal time when we are developing relationships intimately, with friends and family, creating our identity and growing.�

Movember was created during 2003 in Australia by two friends as a way to bring the mustache trend back into fashion and has since expanded into a

global charity raising money and awareness for men’s health, according to the Movember website.

They have focused their efforts to combat testicular cancer, prostate cancer and suicide through fundraising and awareness events across the globe.

By 2030, they plan to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25 percent, the website states.

Ramakrishnan said that Movember on UO’s campus is similar. “We’ve just added additional focuses for men’s mental health and men’s identity development.

Movember encapsulates men’s different identities outside of what’s standard or normative in society,�

Ramakrishnan said.

The movement encourages people of all genders to participate in raising awareness for men’s health. “It’s important for everyone to know this information because we all have men in our lives,�

Stadelman said.

At UO, the main focus is raising awareness, rather than funds because, according to Stadelman, there are certain rules about faculty and staff asking students for money. “If funds are raised on the side then that’s great, but the main goal is to start conversations and destigmatize seeking help,� Stadelman said.

Ramakrishnan’s major is women and gender studies. Coordinating Movember serves as her required internship credit for the major. She started planning the event in July by contacting the various departments within the university to hold events

and participate in Movember.

Each department created its own events based on what its target audience would want to go to, Ramakrishnan said. For example, the UO rec center is hosting a yoga class for men’s health on Nov. 12, and the Duck Nest is hosting a Depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder workshop on Nov. 16. A complete list of the events can be found on the UO event calendar online.

On Nov. 9, Common Grounds hosted a Movember event called Speak Easy, an open mic night in support of men’s health.

Collin Hannatty, a freshman who attended the event said, as a man, “being hurt or injured makes you seem weak.� He said it’s important to talk about this issue at the college level “because we’re still in that age of trying to find out who we are.�

One of the ways they are engaging students to participate in Movember is through a photo contest.

According to Ramakrishnan, there is an ongoing photo contest throughout the month of November open to all students. After submitting a photo and brief description of what healthy masculinity is to the student through the UO Calendar page, they are entered into a raffle to win ten dollar gift cards to EMU vendors. One person will win a Fitbit as well, Ramakrishnan said. “It’s a really important message to send to men, that if you’re struggling, it’s okay to reach out for help,� Stadelman said.

During his junior season, he played 24 games with a .352 batting average to go with a .440 on-base percentage. He had 25 hits, 19

RBIs and 14 runs.

He is listed as a 2017 Perfect Game Preseason High Honorable Mention for the three Preseason High School Underclassman All-American teams.

PINEGROVE FINDS MEANING AMONG SIMPLE SHAPES AND WORDS IN ‘INTREPID’

REVIEW: DANIEL JOHNSTON GIVES AN EMOTIONAL PERFORMANCE IN PORTLAND DURING FINAL TOUR

BY NIC CASTILLON Cult singer-songwriter and outsider artist Daniel Johnston is currently finishing a limited string of live performances that have been billed as his “final tour.� On Wednesday, the artist made a stop in Portland at Revolution Hall for an intimate and heartfelt sold-out show.

The night began in a slightly unorthodox fashion — with a film screening. The 2005 documentary “The Devil and Daniel Johnston� took the place of an opening act and detailed the artist’s storied past and lifelong

struggle with mental illness.

Among other things, the film touched on Johnston’s early life, his rise in the underground Texas music scene and his encounters with other artists — such as Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth and Jad Fair of Half Japanese — during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.

A movie screening before the concert might have been a little strange, but it made sense — it’s hard to imagine how any act would have been able to open up for such a distinct artist.

At the end of the Civil War, Confederate officer Benjamin Hawthorne surrendered his troops at Virginia’s Appomattox Courthouse and walked 100 miles to his home. In 1873, eight years after the war, he moved to Oregon. In 1959, the University of Oregon named a residence hall after him.

Hawthorne, an early professor at the University of Oregon and the founder of the psychology department, is not a widely known figure across campus today.

But Hawthorne, the namesake for Hawthorne Hall in the Walton Complex, came from a slave-owning family. Hawthorne’s father, John Hawthorne, owned 21 slaves according to the 1860 Federal Census’ Slave Register.

While it’s unclear whether Hawthorne himself owned any slaves, his story raises the question of how far universities should go in re-examining and evaluating their histories.

This is happening all over the country — not just in the South or at UO. Last year, UO renamed Dunn Hall, a building dedicated to a former leader of the Eugene Ku Klux Klan. Colleges like Yale, Georgetown University and Clemson University are evaluating buildings named after figures associated with slavery, the KKK and the Confederate army.

Oregon State University is evaluating the names of four buildings, including one named after Benjamin Arnold, a close friend of Benjamin Hawthorne’s.

OSU cited Arnold’s involvement in the Confederate Army as the primary reason why they are considering removing his name.

UO officials said they weren’t even aware of Hawthorne’s service to the South during the Civil War. Even those who know of Hawthorne’s personal history say they aren’t sure if his hall should be renamed. “If you had a Robert E. Lee Hall, I would say you would have to change its name,� said Randol B. Fletcher, the author of “Hidden History of Civil War Oregon� and a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. “Whereas a guy like Hawthorne [or] Arnold – they were 23 years old.

They did what everyone at their age did, so I don’t know if we should hold that against them.�

From the South to the West Fletcher, an Oregon native who now lives in Virginia, has done extensive research on Oregon’s connection to the Civil War. He checked the 1860 slave register, a part of the United State Census at the time, to reconfirm information from his book. “[Hawthorne’s] father, a guy named John Hawthorne, owned 21 slaves. In those days, that would have made him a multimillionaire,�

Fletcher said.

According to the UO Libraries Special Collections and Archives, Benjamin Hawthorne was born in 1837 in Lunenburg County, Virginia.

He enlisted in the 38th Virginia Regiment as a private when the Civil War broke out in 1861.

Soon, he was promoted to an officer because of his family’s elite status.

According to Fletcher, it was “pretty universal� for men like Hawthorne to join the army.

Many historians acknowledge that the war wasn’t just fought for slavery, but for economic reasons as well — this makes it hard to discern a soldier’s reason for enlisting.

As the war progressed, Hawthorne made his way up through the Confederate army and eventually became a member of BrigadierGeneral Lewis Armistead’s staff.

When the war was over, Hawthorne began his career in higher education in the South. His fellow Confederate soldier, Benjamin Arnold, who was one of the first presidents at Corvallis College (now OSU), invited him out West to join the faculty.

In 1873, Hawthorne made his way to Oregon, a state where Black people weren’t allowed to settle at the time.

He served as a professor of languages at Corvallis College until 1884, when he moved to Eugene to teach at UO. He taught a variety of subjects and founded the psychology department.

During his time in Eugene and Corvallis, Hawthorne was a vocal supporter of Confederate representation, and according to Fletcher, he used to scream the “rebel yell� during Union marches in Eugene. The rebel yell is a distinctive high-pitched shriek used by Confederate soldiers during battle to intimidate opposing troops.

Hawthorne received the Confederate Cross from the Daughters of the Confederacy in the early 1900s, according to a newspaper clipping in the UO Archives. He was designated professor emeritus of psychology because of his contributions to the department. Hawthorne died in 1923 and was buried in the Eugene Masonic Cemetery on 24th Avenue and University Street.

Hawthorne Hall was named in 1959, when the north wing was added to the Walton Complex, according to the UO Libraries website.

The renaming process In 2016, the Black Student Task Force released a list of 12 demands to improve Black students’ experiences on campus and requested that the University look into two specific building names for their associations with slavery.

The BSTF asked that Deady and Dunn halls — named after early university figures associated with slavery and the KKK respectively — be renamed. The university administration spent $23,397.29 to commission a panel of historians to look into Matthew Deady and Frederic Dunn’s histories in Oregon.

Dunn Hall was renamed Unthank Junior Hall, after the architecture school’s first Black graduate.

Last year, UO President Michael Schill said Deady Hall remained the same due to Deady’s “embrace of the new constitutional order” after the Civil War, as well as his contributions to the university.

He noted that it was a “tumultuous time in Oregon’s history.” Slavery was illegal in the state for economic reasons, but Oregon still had racist policies.

Oregon instituted laws that excluded free Black people from coming to and settling in the state. The last exclusion law was amended from Oregon’s constitution in 1926.

Deady and Dunn remain somewhat in the spotlight and in conversation on campus. Schill is hosting a panel discussion on Dunn’s renaming featuring a BSTF member and a historian on Nov. 15.

OSU is soliciting input from its own community and commissioning historians in order to make a decision about renaming buildings. Two of the buildings under discussion are the Gill Coliseum arena and the Arnold Dining Center.

The Arnold Dining Center is a similar case to Hawthorne Hall. Benjamin Arnold, one of Oregon State’s first presidents and a former Confederate soldier, invited Hawthorne out to Oregon. OSU recently released a historians’ report on his life.

Steve Clark, OSU’s vice president of university relations and marketing and chair of the school’s Architectural Naming Committee, said OSU will be installing plaques with the findings of the historians, whether the building is renamed or not.

The school is opting towards transparency; it posts updates to a website as the university gathers more information. OSU President Ed Ray will announce the decisions for each building at the end of November.

Ray wrote that “transparent efforts are essential to our growth...” on the university’s website for renaming buildings.

To rename or not to rename?

Hawthorne’s elite status in the Confederate Army is what makes him noteworthy in the public debate about renaming buildings named for those who fought to preserve the institution of slavery, Fletcher said.

“Had he been an 18-year-old private in the Confederate army, I don’t know if there would be any debate about stripping his name off the building or not,” Fletcher said.

Hawthorne’s history hasn’t been readily available unless community members seek it out.

UO sophomore Samuel Miller lived in Hawthorne Hall last year, and he stumbled down an internet rabbit hole that ended in his discovery of Hawthorne’s history.

He says not many people in his Academic Residential Community knew about the building’s namesake, so he posted in his ARC’s Facebook group about the connection between Hawthorne and the Confederate army.

Looking back now, he says his peers reacted with a less “hostile” attitude toward the information than he expected.

Miller says he’s not sure Hawthorne Hall should be RANDOL B. FLETCHER renamed. But he wanted to acknowledge Oregon’s “white supremacist history” at the same time.

The Emerald reached out to the Black Student Task Force members and the University of Oregon’s Black Student Union leader for comment on whether the hall should be renamed but never received a response from either organization.

UO spokesman Tobin Klinger said the university has not discussed renaming Hawthorne Hall.

“I’m not aware of previous discussions around the name Hawthorne Hall,” Klinger wrote in an email to the Emerald. He noted that the university is interested in this information but couldn’t speculate further.

Regardless of whether the UO administration decides to evaluate Hawthorne Hall’s name, campuses across the country are addressing these histories with similar results.

Universities in the South, as well as all over the country, are spending thousands of dollars to look into building names. Most often, student activism and political groups point to larger figures — those who were vocal supporters of white supremacist ideologies or staunch supporters of slavery — as targets of renaming, not general Confederate soldiers. Often, a school’s administration must weigh historical findings with a figure’s contributions to the school. “[He] did what everyone his age did,” Fletcher said about Hawthorne. “I don’t know if we should hold that against them. I don’t know if the Hawthorne family cares that there is a hall named after him.”

Only four in ten Americans currently believe the Democratic Party stands for something; over a quarter of all Democrats say their party primarily stands in opposition to Trump rather than for its own agenda. Last week’s elections appear to show a movement growing behind the Democrats, but in reality, it is solely opposition to President Trump.

Voters still must choose between the lesser of two evils, but Trump’s attacks on people of color, members of the LGTBQ community, Muslims and others make him appear worse than the Democrats to voters. Voters want to send a message to the Trump administration: they are not pleased with his party, his policies or his actions. The best way to do this is to vote for the opposite party.

Millennials are now the largest voting bloc in America; they tend to be more liberal and diverse than baby boomers, the former largest voting bloc. Baby boomers and older voters lean conservative both economically and socially, while millennials and younger voters lean left.

In order to win an election, a candidate or party must cater more towards the largest voting bloc to increase turnout of that bloc.

When baby boomers were the largest bloc, the Democrats catered to their views with policies like neoliberalism and capitalism. Now that millennials are the largest voting bloc, the Democratic Party must shift its policies to encompass millennials’ views in order to continue winning elections.

This was clearly shown in Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. She couldn’t get the same turnout from millennials as President Obama did, and it cost her. Millennials want to know what their representatives are doing to combat income inequality, climate change and the rising cost of college tuition. She should have looked at the writing on the wall, seen that 51 percent of millennials do not support

capitalism, and chosen policy positions that more closely aligned with millennial views. The famous moment between Trevor Hill and Nancy Pelosi at a CNN town hall where she stated, “I have to say, we’re capitalist. That’s just the way it is,” shows that the Democratic Party is out of touch with the beliefs of its largest bloc of potential voters.

In order to win over millennials, the Democratic Party must stop accepting corporate funding. When Democratic representatives are funded with money from the fossil fuel industry, how can we expect them to create legislation to fiercely combat climate change? If the military-industrial complex influences budgets, how can we expect them to allocate money to universal healthcare or college tuition? President Obama, in his 2016 federal budget, laid the foundation for a trillion-dollar overhaul of the nuclear weapons program. The current low estimate is closer to $1.2 trillion. It would only cost $47 billion a year to abolish tuition and fees at public four-year colleges for students coming from households making less that $125,000 a year and make community college tuition-free for students at all income levels.

The reason that 15 Democratic Socialists of America members and DSA-backed candidates won elections last Tuesday is that neither party is discussing the issues that matter to voters the most. In order to win elections — especially at the national level — you must appeal to millennials, and the issues that are the most important to them are issues that neither party is focusing on.

If the Democrats want to win elections postTrump, they must begin shifting their policies to reflect the views of millennials. Given the political climate we’re in now, however, moving our country even a slight amount to the left is nothing to sneeze at.

Unlike people, numbers don’t lie.

With the rapid decline in weekend attendance, the truth is out — apparently, church sucks. That was quite literally the writing on the wall, or sign that was outside the EMU on Thursday afternoon.

When something sucks and you want to know why, you talk about it. So 31 students from a local Bible school called ARISE decided to do just that.

Holding a big sign that read, “Tell Us Why ‘Church Sucks,’� the group set up a three-sided plywood wall. As people passed, they invited them to write on the wall and share their honest feelings about church. As passersby realized what the project was about, eyes grew big, eyebrows furrowed in skepticism and some wore smiles of relief. By 5 p.m., there was no space left to write on the wall. I walked around with my Sony, snapping photos of the heartbreaking messages. Someone’s uncle was molested by a priest. Someone didn’t know how to have emotional boundaries anymore. Most felt judged or rejected. A wound had been opened up and was bleeding out in sharpie ink. The real irony, as many passersby discovered, is that ARISE itself is a Christian organization and part of the UO’s Religious Directors Association.

All of the students attend Storyline, a church startup in Eugene, as part of the program. Reise, a project leader, explained their inspiration: “[We] really

wanted to do something for people who’ve been hurt by the church,� and show that, “God despises the evils committed against [them].� The idea was to acknowledge people’s pain and to “just listen,� as Michael, another project leader, said. The students also passed out cards that said phrases like, “We’re sorry for hurting you.�

If you were to talk with Reise or Michael, as well as other project leaders like Sharon or Arlana, you’d quickly realize this project had deep roots in their own personal stories. In fact, each one wrote on the wall themselves because each has felt the sting of rejection from people who claimed the name of Christ; people who supposedly knew God’s love. Sharon — who left the church for eight years because of hurtful experiences with other Christians — explained to me, “some of those things that are on the wall — they happened to me.�

As we talked, I saw the gratitude they felt for every person who shared their pain, and yet, they told me they wished they talked less and listened even more. They clearly didn’t want to set themselves up as special or better than anyone. “We wanted to show we’re sorry. We’re listening. We’re trying.

We’re you.�

They were also clear that they weren’t trying to invite people back into a place where no one ever gets hurt. In fact, the ARISE group wasn’t intending to invite anyone to church at all. But, perhaps, by simply acknowledging and apologizing, they could start the healing process and be a little more like the Man they claim to follow.

The wall was only up for a couple hours, but in those hours, a few people tried to create a space for empathy and compassion, and no matter what you believe, I think that’s something we can all agree is beautiful.

In our modern, technologyobsessed culture, it has become easier than ever to share misinformation—one only needs to scroll through any social media newsfeed to see my point. A New York Times article from last month, “How Fiction Becomes Fact on Social Media,� drilled home this point by talking about how misinformation and conspiracies set social media ablaze after the Las Vegas massacre in October.

What happens to a population when we become conditioned to hearing about social media hoaxes and fake news, from Pizzagate to flu vaccines to the “It� clown-led protest? What are the consequences of living in a world in which there are no trusted media sources?

Today, as I was struggling to stay awake in my 8 a.m. Environmental Studies discussion group, one of my classmates shared an incendiary fact: Deady Hall, the first building on our campus, was named after a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

We were outraged, although unsurprised, since it seems that every day we find out someone else we thought was okay is actually a jerk, whether it’s Gandhi, Louis CK or Kevin Spacey. We moved on, accepting and integrating the knowledge that Deady Hall was named after a member of one of the worst groups America has seen — except that it wasn’t.

An article published by the Oregonian revealed that Deady was not a KKK member — that was Frederic Dunn, who had a dormitory named after him on the UO campus (Dunn Hall) until last year, when a university board voted unanimously to remove the name.

Matthew Deady, however, was an advocate of slavery rather than a KKK member, and though his politics were racist and disgraceful, I was still misinformed about Deady’s position.

I don’t blame my classmate for getting her facts wrong. But I do blame the rest of my class, and myself, for simply taking her statement at face-value because now my classmates operate under the assumption that the UO’s values would allow a building to be named after a member of one of the worst groups America has ever produced.

Even more so, I blame our culture of unconscious acceptance.

It is now commonplace to believe everything we read on the internet, despite the early 2000s-esque warnings we’ve undoubtedly received to never do just that.

It is time we become skeptics, time we learn how to question everything. What would happen if we never believed something before we have verified it for ourselves?

This is the only way to defend ourselves against the onslaught of lies that are propagated each day, in the worlds both online and off.

If we don’t do our research and become habitual skeptics habitual thinkers - we may become complacent, and if the truth becomes buried in misinformation, we will not bother to uncover it. Consider, for example, the repeated omission in our history textbooks of the stories of people of color, the LGBTQ community, women and indigenous nations.

So many textbooks give us only a Eurocentric, fractional and false recount of the world. If we do not fight for the truth and chase down our references, then it will become possible for those who want to omit the truth to do so.

It is for these reasons that we must always seek the truth above anything else. We must always ask questions. Holding ourselves to these standards is the essence of survival in our modern world, and we can, as students, ask for nothing less from our professors, our families, our fellow students and above all, ourselves.

SABRINA IONESCU SCORES A TRIPLEDOUBLE IN DUCKS’ 110-77 WIN OVER DRAKE

For the past 19 seasons, Oregon basketball has opened with a home court win.

In Friday’s game against Coppin State (0-1), the Ducks (1-0) added to the streak with a 70-54 victory over the Eagles to officially begin their 2017-18 season.

After a lead of 28 at the half, Oregon seemed to fall victim to first-game nerves as they let the Eagles get within 10 points in the last three minutes of play.

“It was a really bad first showing,” sophomore guard Payton Pritchard said.

“Defensively, the second half was terrible. But you know it is our first game and given the team, that’s no excuse.”

As the top returner in all but one statistical category, Pritchard played a significant role in tonight’s game as he led the team in rebounds and assists.

Surprisingly, Roman Sorkin led the team in points with a career-high 23.

Sorkin had a heated 15 minutes of play in the first half. Highlighted by 18 points, he led the team throughout the first half and kept it through the second, only missing one of his nine total shots.

“Any guy can step up and have a big shooting night like Roman did,” Pritchard said. “We needed it, and he stepped up and made his threes. I’m happy for him.”

Sorkin’s momentum was slowed as he reached four personal fouls with 16:13 left in the second half and scored four additional

points for the team.

A mere six-and-a-half minutes into the game, Oregon ran with a 12-0 run and kept Coppin State down to a 14.3 shooting percentage to end the first half.

Five-star recruit Troy Brown’s first regular season game for the Ducks proved he’s got moves. Brown danced his way through the crowded paint numerous times in the first half and scored the first basket for the Ducks.

However, Brown’s good first impression in the first half was short-lived as he shot 1-of-5 in the second, missing multiple threepoint attempts. He ended the game with 18 points and five rebounds in his total 32 minutes of play.

The Ducks came back on the court in the second half and quickly saw their defense slip away as their lack of communication made way for Coppin State to score 44 points off of 29 total shots.

“A lot of nervous energy out there tonight,” head coach Dana Altman said.

“We knew that was going to be a problem here early on, but tonight it really was. Our mentality just has to change.

Our discipline, our attention to detail, our rules — we are just out there, we got to think about getting the ball back and go.”

The Ducks will look to reorganize as they play their next three games at home, starting with Prairie View A&M this Monday at 6 p.m. at Matthew Knight Arena.

advanced to the third round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament with a 110-77 win over Drake at Matthew Knight Arena. With one more triple-double, she’ll match the Pac-12 career mark — with two more she’ll tie the NCAA career record of seven.

The Ducks were led by the backcourt duo of Ionescu and junior Maite Cazorla, who finished with a double-double of 12 points and 11 assists.

gets her in trouble — she looks to pass. I thought tonight, at least in the second half, [Ionescu] was looking to score. She needs to continue to be aggressive and look to score first sometimes.”

Senior and Eugene native Lexi Bando shot 4-of-6 from 3-point land and added 16 points. Ruthy Hebard scored 10 points and added 11 rebounds for her first doubledouble of the season. Off the bench, freshman Satou Sabally shot 8-of-11 for 20 points.

“I think we have so many great players that we’re going to be able to wear some teams down,” Graves said. “That could be part of our M.O. for the season.”

The Ducks were 6-of-10 from the 3-point line after the first quarter – a quarter in which they put 30 points.

entered halftime with a 50-39 lead. The Ducks were tripped up with 10 turnovers at the half.

“We were shooting at a good clip in the first half, but we were just kind of stubbing our own toe,” Graves said. “I just felt once we got rolling in the full cut, we got some offense off our defense and that got us going.”

The Ducks will hit the road for the third game of the WNIT to play Texas A&M on Thursday night at 5 p.m. in College Station, Texas. If the Ducks advance, they’ll play in the WNIT championship game on Nov. 19 on the road.

“I think it’ll definitely test us and we’ll see where we are,” Ionescu said. “I’m excited to be able play on the road. I know we haven’t really had a tough game on the road yet, so I think it will test how we battle that fight, and school and everything we’ll be missing here.”

Oregon head coach Dana Altman had a similar sentiment after the Ducks won 70-54 in a lackluster performance against Coppin State on Friday, specifically struggling on the defensive side of the ball.

“I think the offense will come,” Altman said. “I think our ball movement will improve; we’ll execute some things. But I’m much more concerned whether we take our defense seriously.”

Oregon held Coppin State to just 14 points during the first half, shooting 4-for-28. But any hint of defensive prowess that the Ducks possessed faded during the second half as they allowed the Coppin Bald Eagles to cut the deficit to as few as 10 points.

“Defensively the second half was terrible,” sophomore Payton Pritchard said. “Right now, defensively, we’re struggling. A team like that — we shouldn’t be struggling like that inside.”

Last season, Coppin State was 8-24. They often lost by double digits, losing by as much as 52 points against Georgetown.

Pritchard also emphasized the Ducks’ lack of steals, while on the other side of the ball they were getting the ball stolen from them.

“I think one possession we almost turned the ball over four times,” he said.

The Ducks had just four steals.

Coppin State recorded six.

This new Oregon team is made up of seven new players, including five

true freshmen. With so many key players from last year’s Final Four team gone, including Jordan Bell and Chris Boucher — Oregon’s first and second all-time leading shot blockers — this year’s team has some big shoes to fill defensively. Pritchard says that without Bell and Boucher on the inside, on-ball defense “has to be tremendous.”

Besides Roman Sorkin’s teamleading 23 points and Troy Brown’s 18 points, the Ducks didn’t have much of an offensive presence, either. But Altman isn’t worried about that.

“There wasn’t much communication, and we gave up a lot of easy shots,” Altman said.

“Offensively our ball movement wasn’t very good the second half. We weren’t well organized. I think we can do that because the guys want to do that, but defensively we’ve got to have some volunteers to step up and start guarding.”

With a team full of offensiveminded athletes, Altman says that the Ducks have to change their mindset going forward and focus on the defensive fundamentals.

“Take it seriously,” Altman said.

“We’ve got to guard. We’ve got a locker full of guys, 13 guys on the bench, right now who all consider themselves — their first goal is to score. Until we get some guys that place as much emphasis on the defensive end and on the rebounding — some guys that are willing to step up and be defenders first — I think we’ll struggle.”

BY AUGUST HOWELL • TWITTER @HOWELL_AUGUST Oregon finished their penultimate race today at the West Regionals in Seattle with the women finishing third behind San Francisco and Stanford. The men were fourth, beat by Portland, Washington and Stanford.

Neither team placed in the automatic qualifying spots, but based on the track and field savvy site, FloTrack.org, both the men and women should have accumulated enough points to get an entry, officially called an at-large bid, into the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Kentucky next Friday.

The 92 points scored by the Oregon women was not enough to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. SFU junior Charlotte Taylor, the 2016 NCAA 10,000-meter champion, won the race in 19 minutes, 14 seconds — a new course record.

Lilli Burdon in ninth at 19:43 and Carmela Cardama Baez in 13th at 19:52. Senior Alli Cash, who was sidelined all season due to injury, made her season debut by placing 43rd in 20:31.

Junior Tanner Anderson was sixth overall on the men’s side in 29:43, beating Stanford’s Grant Fisher. Emmanuel Roudolff-Levisse of Portland won in 29:33, and Portland placed three in the top four spots to secure the title. Their team score of 63 just edged out Washington, who scored 65 points. The Oregon men scored 149 points.

Pac-12 Freshmen of the Year Cooper Teare was 23rd and the second overall runner for the Ducks. He ran 29:59 for his first ever 10k.

Both teams will have to wait for the official bids to be announced tomorrow at 12 p.m. There are 13 additional spots to go with the 18 automatic qualifiers from each of the nine regions around the country.

Oregon went on the road and beat the Arizona State Sun Devils on Thursday to collect their 10th sweep of the season.

The Ducks have improved to 16-7 overall and 9-6 in the Pac-12. For the Sun Devils, it was their 15th consecutive loss, and they remain winless in conference play.

Oregon used a balanced attack against the Sun Devils. Taylor Agost, Lindsey Vander Weide and Jolie Rasmussen had nine kills each to lead the team.

Holding a two-set advantage, the Ducks dominated the third set to clinch the match. The Ducks never trailed in the set.

They opened the set on a 5-2 run and later led 15-12 before really taking control. The Ducks scored a 7-3 run to lead 22-15 and force an Arizona State timeout.

The Sun Devils tried to force

another set, scoring 7-of-9 to pull within two and force an Oregon timeout. Needing just one point to win the match, the Ducks looked to Vander Weide to get the game winning kill, giving the Ducks a 25-22 set victory.

With the Ducks trailing 11-8 in the first set, Oregon went on a 5-1 run to take a one-point lead.

After an ASU point tied the match — the Ducks went on another run — this time a 12-4 run to put the Sun Devils away and take the first set, a 25-17 win.

Arizona State challenged in the second set. The Sun Devils scored four straight points to take a five-point lead and force Oregon to call timeout. The Ducks responded with an 8-3 run to tie the match at 14. No team held greater than a two-point lead the rest of the way. The Sun Devils held a 22-20 advantage before Oregon called timeout. The Ducks responded with a 5-1 run to clinch the second set, 25-23.

MUSICAL REFERENCES TO EUGENE SHOW MORE THAN JUST OREGON PRIDE

This lively, green city often lies near the back end of the public zeitgeist’s list of favorite American towns — Eugene is rarely discussed on a larger scale outside of University of Oregon relations. But though the town is generally absent from pop culture, the name “Eugene� (in reference to the city) occasionally lands a mention in the world of music.

Eugene’s presence in the music world is diverse. Sometimes, Eugene is mentioned to add to a musician’s reputation or notoriety, and other times, it’s used as a calming vehicle for nostalgia.

Here are a few of the best musical references to Eugene: Take prolific underground rapper Sage Francis for example. The end of his song, “You Can’t Win� from his 2013 mixtape “Sick To D(EAT)H,� features a sample that repeats the phrase “I’ve been there!� over and over again. During these repetitions, Francis interjects with different places he’s presumably been to, and in-between “Red State School� and “Beverly Laurel,� Francis boasts about having visited Eugene. Sage Francis is from Rhode Island, which makes his reference to Eugene geographically perplexing.

G-Eazy, another Eugene name-dropper, is from

the much more proximate Northern California.

In “Sherry� off his 2011 mixtape, “The Endless Summer,� G-Eazy braggadociously raps about how “he’s got a buzz from New Orleans to Maui/ From Eugene to Phoenix, the Bay to the Valley.�

Perhaps the most entertaining Eugene reference found in rap is made by Ab-Soul on Childish Gambino’s 2012 track “Unnecessary.�

While Ab-Soul’s verse is nothing more than ordinary hip-hop braggery, in it he suggests that he enjoys “White with white girls in Eugene.� It’s not surprising that Ab-Soul occasionally does cocaine with groupies at his shows, but it’s funny imagining that a few young Eugene women could have had a night to remember with Ab Soul.

But no one references Eugene and Oregon more than Eugene-born recording artist Mat Kearney. Even on his latest album, “Just Kids,� he mentions Oregon on three tracks: “Heartbreak Dreamer,� “One Black Sheep� and “Coming Home (Oregon).� Those who don’t recognize that last title must have missed every UO-hosted event since 2015. Thanks to “Coming Home (Oregon),�

Mat Kearney has become a local legend.

Sufjan Stevens’ 2015 album, “Carrie & Lowell,� also holds its fair share of Eugene memories. The

album is about Stevens’ mother and stepfather who lived in Eugene and the summers Stevens spent here as a child. On the track “All of Me Wants All of You,� Spencer’s Butte makes an appearance. In his song aptly titled “Eugene,�

Stevens wonders “What if I’d never seen hysterical light from Eugene?� and contemplates how at “Emerald Park, wonders never cease.�

Even legendary country performer Dolly Parton holds Eugene close to her heart. While on tour in 1972, Parton spent an unforgettable night here that ended with the writing of a loving ode dedicated to the city. “Eugene, Oregon� is likely the most loving musical gift Eugene has ever been granted.

Eugene is also mentioned in regards to the anarchy following the Rodney King riots in the early 1990s. On Sublime’s track “April 29th, 1992,� lead singer Bradley Nowell mentions cities affected by these events, with Eugene among them.

Despite little recognition in mainstream media, Eugene is not completely overlooked. Eugene is beautiful and is even embedded deep within some of the most successful performers in American history — forever cemented in their words.

MOVEMBER OPEN MIC EVENT

SPARKS DIALOGUE ABOUT DESTRUCTIVE MASCULINITY

Performers bravely discussed the wretched consequences of destructive masculinity in U.S. culture at the event Speak Easy: A Spoken Word Open Mic in Support of Men’s Health on Nov. 9 in the Common Grounds Cafe in Hamilton Hall. For nearly two hours, students — the majority of whom had never performed their poetry for an audience before — revealed their struggles with identity, sexuality, divorce and rape.

The University of Oregon Counseling Center organized the event in accordance with “Movember,� which is global campaign to raise awareness and promote dialogue about men’s health. Spencer Atkinson, the Hamilton Hall community director who organized the event, said the events hold particular significance this year.

Recently Americans have seen of a spike in powerful men being accused of sexual assault — from Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein to Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore. Many people associate these crimes with masculinity according to Atkinson.

Fifteen minutes before the event started in the dimly lit cafe, which smelled of french fries, burgers and coffee, students who had not intended to watch slam poetry ate and chatted amongst themselves. Songs like “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World� by James Brown and “Hit The Road Jack� by Ray Charles played in the background. By the time the event started at 8 p.m., the room was filled with about 50 people.

Atkinson started the show by sharing memories about the ways in which people shaped his childhood ideas about masculinity. When he was a kid, he told his mom’s boyfriend he wanted to be an interior designer. His mom’s boyfriend replied by saying, “Interior design isn’t a guy thing.� Then, in the sixth grade, Atkinson won a drag show at a summer camp. When he told his friends they replied, “That’s kind of gay.�

“We don’t have a good way to hold men accountable for their actions right now,� Atkinson told the Emerald after the show.

He says that destructive ideas about masculinity are woven into the power structure of our society and as a result, dialogue about those ideas is suppressed. Events like these give people the opportunity to creatively express the role masculinity plays in their lives in a supportive setting.

Atkinson acknowledged that if someone attends an event like the open mic, they are probably already savvy to the ways in which some forms of masculinity can cause people harm. But he still says the event serves a crucial role on the UO campus. “We might be preaching to the choir,�

Atkinson said. “But it’s important that everyone here develops the vocabulary and the tools necessary to go out and talk about this to people who didn’t come.�

Halfway through the show, Atkinson went up to the mic and said, “I’ve noticed how few men have been taking the stage, which is deeply ironic given the topic of the event.�

One performer, Andreas Neves, a Hamilton Hall resident assistant and junior Family and Human Services major, said he hopes male first-year students encounter an environment in which they can be open with other men about their emotions. Neves said American culture bars men from sharing their feelings with each other.

Neves’ poem detailed how men’s cultural imperative to hide emotion leads to a form of misogyny in which men use women to dump all of their vulnerability. “That situation hurts both parties involved,� Neves said. “I want to be the person who encourages my residents to be vulnerable with people whom they aren’t having romantic relationships.�
