NEWS ARTS AND ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM NOT ACCEPTING NEW APPLICANTS, FUTURE OF PROGRAM STILL UNCLEAR

BY RYLEE KAHAN • TWITTER @RYLEEKAHAN Since the reconfiguration of the College of Design last fall, students have been confused about whether the Arts and Administration (AAD) program will continue to run.

According to the PPPM school’s webpage, “the Arts and Administration program, within the School of Planning, Public Policy and Management, is not currently accepting applications.”

Alexis Garcia is a freshman anthropology major who was looking forward to starting an AAD minor. After receiving no response from the general information email for the

AAD program in February, Garcia talked to an undergraduate advisor for the PPPM program, Heather Mutony, who told her that if the program reopens in the next year or two, she will have time to complete the minor.

According to Garcia, AAD 250 and 251 were on the spring course catalog for the AAD program before registration; however, when it was time for her to register, the classes disappeared from the catalog, and currently on DuckWeb, the lowestlevel AAD class is AAD 315.

“It kind of threw a wrench in my plans. I

was really hoping to be able to minor in this program, and now that it seems I might not be able to,” Garcia said. “I’ve been scrambling to find something else that fits with my degree and that I also would enjoy.”

The only other information about the matter on the department’s website is an informational blog for students currently enrolled in the program, and there is no further explanation of when or if the program will reopen to students.

This has led to confusion over whether the AAD program will cease to exist in the future, because up until this term, students have been able to register for AAD classes below the 300 level.

Students who visited PPPM advising were not told that the program has completely ended, and were given ambiguous answers about whether or not they will be able to enroll in the future.

According to the dean of the College of Design, Christoph Lindner, the AAD program merged with the PPPM school during the restructure because they seemed compatible.

“The driver of the decision [to merge] was to create a sustainable future for Arts and Administration as a discipline in the College of Design,” said Lindner. “The School of Planning, Public Policy and Management is an ideal academic community because collaboration between disciplines is at the heart of PPPM’s culture. It has been a welcoming and productive new home for Arts and Administration.”

The head of the school of PPPM, Richard Margerum, said there have been and will be more discussions about what the AAD program will look like in the future for prospective students.

“We are considering some options for creating a concentration (“focal area” as we call them) within our undergraduate PPPM major for students interested in arts and administration,” Margerum said. “Up to now, our focus has been on the courses required for current students.”

According to Margerum, there will be an AAD faculty meeting later this week to discuss longer term options for students interested in the AAD program.

UO SENATE OUTLINES SPRING TERM GOALS

BY HANNAH KANIK • TWITTER @HANNAH_KANIK This term, the University Senate hopes to change the general education requirements for all students. Other goals on its agenda include approving honorary degrees and updating leadership within the Senate.

Core education The Senate is making changes to general education, now called core education, to better align with the university mission statement.

“What the accreditors want is alignment between what we are offering and assessing with the university mission,” said Senate President Chris Sinclair.

These changes are supposed to simplify requirements students need to graduate, such as the specifics for a Bachelor of Arts.

“We would like to be able to make some innovations on this where students can take clustered themes of courses,” Sinclair said.

For example, if a student wanted to major in business, they would take the business cluster that would satisfy all general education requirements for that student in the most efficient way possible, ultimately expediting general education requirements, according to Sinclair.

The new system would create a solid foundation that the university can build on,

creating more unique aspects of the general education experience, according to Sinclair.

These changes and others have to go through an extensive review process. The soonest changes, including changed learning requirements for each class, could be implemented by fall 2018.

Honorary degree process Last year, the university changed its policy on awarding honorary degrees to now include the Senate as a part of the chain of approval for them.

An honorary degree is a degree awarded to an individual who has done something substantial for the community without going through the typical requirements for receiving a degree.

In 2001, Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children’s Defense Fund, was awarded an honorary degree at the UO for advocating for disadvantaged individuals.

During week four, the senate will have a closed meeting to discuss the nominated individuals and decide to approve or deny the individuals’ honorary degrees.

The list of approved individuals will be forwarded to President Schill and the Board of Trustees for final approval.

Appointments and elections within the Senate Starting next week, surveys to indicate interest in serving on committees will be sent to faculty, officers of administration and classified staff.

In the Senate, several committees are responsible for a specific issue or topic, such as course evaluations or environmental issues.

The Senate either appoints or elects members to its various committees. Elections for committees will be held later in the term.

The Senate will also nominate its new vice president on the floor of the Senate during its week 10 meeting.

The current vice president will become the new president of the Senate and the current president will become the immediate past president.

“I will be rotated into the immediate past president, Bill Harbaugh will be rotated into the president, and whomever is elected to be VP will be going into that position,” Senate President Chris Sinclair said.

Last term, the University Senate passed a resolution from the UO Student Collective denouncing white supremacy on campus, began discussions on changing the general education requirements and made changes to the Clark Honors College.

Examples of regenerative medicine sound like science fiction: 3D tissue printing, regrowing tissue and stem cell therapy. But Dr. Robert Guldberg, incoming director of the Knight Campus and current executive director of the bioengineering institute at Georgia Tech, will tell you that many such techniques are not only real, but also save lives.

“It’s actually a field that’s 25 years old now,” Guldberg said. “And that may be surprising to people.”

On Wednesday, April 4 at 4 p.m. in Lillis 182, Guldberg will present his ongoing research during a lecture titled “The Perils and Promise of Regenerative Medicine.” He will not start working full time at UO until August. He said he hopes this brief visit will help him make connections at the university and throughout the state. While UO currently lacks an engineering program, Guldberg said that discussions about establishing such a program have occured and that he will recruit more bioengineers to campus.

“Part of the reason I was hired was that there is a recognition that the complex problems we work on now require an interdisciplinary approach,” Guldberg said. “And UO has absolutely terrific life sciences and other areas, but they don’t have engineering. To complete that innovation cycle requires an entire team at UO.” At its core, regenerative medicine — a subset of bioengineering — develops biological solutions instead of using metal, plastic or other non-biological methods to work with serious medical conditions such as an extreme injury or birth defects. Regenerative medicine has great potential, according to Guldberg, who cited 3D printed tissues that have already been used on human patients.

Guldberg said the 3D printing technology has been “actually used to save several babies’ lives.”

If administered correctly, bioengineered tissue can grow and assimilate with a given individual.

Non-organic implants lack such capability. Also, non-organic implants pose various risks that

bioengineered tissue could theoretically avoid, such as a pacemaker running out of battery. But Guldman said numerous technical, regulatory and ethical challenges remain for regenerative medicine specialists.

“You have some of these stem cell clinics that are just using the marketing of, ‘Hey we’ve got stem cells. We’ll stick them into your spine and you’ll feel better,’” Guldberg said. “They’re not necessarily putting good science behind that. It’s a pretty layered area that is making an impact now but is also something that we have to be careful of and make sure there is good science behind the therapies.”

Commercialization is also a quandary for regenerative medicine

researchers like Guldberg.

“The reality is, if you can’t take these new technologies and turn them into a business that makes money,” Guldberg said, “then you can’t get them into patients.”

Given his engineering background, Guldberg said he is particularly concerned with establishing a quality control system for cells used in cell therapy.

“Cell therapies are where the automotive industry was in the early 1900s,” Guldberg said.

“We can do it in a sort of one-off way, but it’s very expensive. The quality control is not there.

We haven’t even really decided what should we measure to know we’ve got a good quality cell to put into a patient.”

PREVIEW: SEATTLE BANDS CAR SEAT HEADREST AND NAKED GIANTS WILL JOIN FORCES AT WOW HALL ON APRIL 6

Fewer than two years after Seattle bands Car Seat Headrest and Naked Giants were in town, they return this week, beginning a tour in support of Car Seat Headrest’s redo of its early Bandcamp release, “Twin Fantasy.” Car Seat Headrest, which comprises Will Toledo, Ethan Ives, University of Oregon alum Andrew Katz and Seth Dalby, will be joined on stage by Naked Giants, who are acting as auxiliary members after opening the show. They will be playing at WOW Hall on Friday, April 6.

The pairing of the two bands on stage is a match made in heaven. With Naked Giants’ freewheeling stage presence and Car Seat Headrest’s fuzzy, nihilistic indie-rock, the two bands’ return to Eugene will be nothing short of spectacular.

But don’t miss Naked Giants’ opening set just because its members are playing with Car Seat Headrest later that night. The rambunctious

and ever-energetic trio, comprising vocalist and guitarist Grant Mullen, drummer Henry LaVallee and bassist Gianni Aiello, released its debut album, “Sluff,” on New West Records on March 31.

KEXP said the band’s first release after 2016’s “R.I.P EP” feels rushed in a good way — hectic and unstable, but not overtly so. The band experiments with quieter, poppier sounds in “Sluff.” Tracks “Shredded Again” and “Everybody Thinks They Know (But No One Really Knows)” feel less hectic than the band’s previous work, but still, there’s a sense of rambunctiousness and unease.

“TV,” the album’s six minute and 30 second-long single, goes from guitarpedal laden riff to riff. The song feels like somewhat of a culmination of the band’s previous sounds.

The album is like other firsts — it’s something new and not entirely stable on its feet, but still fantastic in its own right.

Naked Giants hadn’t made much of an impact outside of Seattle yet but returned to Eugene later in the year to play the now defunct DIY venue, the Boreal. Meanwhile, Toledo and his band worked on “Twin Fantasy.”

Toledo released the original album in 2011 on Bandcamp.

Both versions of the album chronicle a young man discovering his homosexuality and the tracklist remains relatively the same. But the remake of “Twin Fantasy” features a more robust sound thanks to a full band instead of Toledo playing all instruments himself. Toledo’s increasingly confident vocals add another layer of emotion to the lyrics.

“Cute Thing” features a new verse, adding references to R&B artist Frank Ocean.

“God / Give me Frank Ocean’s voice / And James Brown’s stage presence / I will be your rock, God, when you’re rolling the dice,” Toledo sings with increasing force.

“I got so fucking romantic / I apologize.”

Accompanied by Andrew Katz’s pounding drums, Seth Dalby’s bass lines and Ethan Ives’ varied guitar work, the re-imagined album feels fuller and more thought-out compared to its original.

These songs are some of Toledo’s best work, both lyrically and musically, and with the addition of Naked Giants, hopefully something to behold live.

UO STUDENT COLLECTIVE CLASHES WITH THE STUDENT CONDUCT CODE

BY HANNAH KANIK • TWITTER @HANNAK_KANIK During fall term, a student demonstration sparked a debate that would challenge the student conduct code, the power of administrators, and institutionalized racism on campus. The issue even gained national media attention when the New York Times published an op-ed from President Michael Schill criticizing the protest.

After the University of Oregon Student Collective interrupted Schill’s “State of the University” address on Oct. 6 to protest several issues – including rising tuition and white supremacy on campus – they were faced with “confusing” student conduct charges and little support from the administration, according to student collective member Caroline Crisp.

Following the protest, the student collective worked with the University Senate to propose changes to the student conduct code. In response to demands from the collective, the Senate denounced white supremacy on campus and created a task force to educate the community on UO’s racist history.

The student collective, a group of student activists, was established on campus in fall 2016 to improve the student experience at the university through substantial systematic changes.

“We all noticed that a lot of our demands weren’t being met and things weren’t getting done. Tuition kept rising, the issue of white supremacy was still not being addressed,” said Crisp.

The student collective published a list of 22 demands following their demonstration that called on the administration to address tuition prices, make the university more eco-friendly and embrace the diversity of students on campus.

Following the protest, 13 members of the collective were charged with student conduct violations — “disruption of the university” and “failure to comply.”

Students were able to appeal their charges or accept them by pleading guilty. If a student plead guilty, the charges would not show up on their university record. If they appealed and lost, the charges would show up on their record permanently.

Some students choose to plead guilty, while others, like Crisp, chose to fight their charges.

However, members of the collective had grievances with the student conduct code and the disciplinary review process they underwent following the protests.

The collective challenged these processes through a resolution to the senate.

Since the protest, the collective has passed two resolutions through the senate. One established solidarity between the senate and the collective as the students navigated their conduct charges and the second denounced white supremacy on campus.

Resolutions The collective presented a resolution to the university senate on Nov. 15 that called the senate to support the collective and urge administration to drop the conduct charges. Additionally, the resolution asked the senate to denounce white supremacy on campus.

On Nov. 28, President Schill and Provost Banavar sent a letter to the senate urging them not to support the student collective’s resolutions.

The letter states, “The proposed resolution makes some sweeping generalizations about the university’s priorities that are not consistent with our actions.”

Schill claimed that the collective was aware of the consequences they would receive before the protest. The letter also states that the university cannot legally deny any white supremacist groups from coming to the university under free speech laws.

On Nov. 29 the resolution was split in two. The first resolution addressed the student conduct charges and established the Senate’s support of the collective as they navigated their charges. The second focused on denouncing white supremacy on campus.

Despite Schill’s letter, on Nov. 29, the Senate passed the first resolution supporting the collective.

On Dec. 1, President Schill wrote a letter to the senate standing by his previous statement denouncing the collective’s resolution.

“Even though there was no formal policy change from that resolution, I think the administration maybe learned a lesson on how to go about these sorts of conversations,” Senate President Chris Sinclair said.

He said it was significant that the senate supported the collective despite opposing views from administration.

The second resolution, which denounced white supremacy on campus, was discussed at the University Senate meetings in early January. The senate debated

the legality of denying white supremacist groups on campus under the first amendment right of freedom of speech.

The senate executive board, with the help of students and faculty, reviewed and rewrote parts of the resolution to be more compatible with freedom of speech laws.

The senate passed the collective’s second resolution to denounce white supremacy on Jan. 31. This resolution created a task force within the senate to combat racism on campus.

The task force will be comprised of President Michael Schill, senate president Chris Sinclair, and student leaders. The task force will recruit its first members later in the term when the other senate committees are slated.

This group is set to educate the student body about possible plaques to add to the monuments and statues around campus that have been considered racist in recent months.

Institutionalized racism on campus Institutionalized racism is a form of racism that can exist in institutions such as universities due to systematic tendencies that alienate or disadvantage minorities. For example, the university raising its tuition creates a financial barrier for students of color who come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

One of the main factors in the collective’s protests was the feeling that the university is not a safe place for minorities on campus.

“People are literally fighting for their lives,” Crisp said.

UO has white supremacy embedded in its history, represented through buildings memorializing members of the KKK and a mural in the library that represents white superiority.

Last April, a white nationalist group came to campus near the EMU. The collective wanted to recognize that these groups pose a threat to students and ensure the university does not welcome them to campus.

The collective referenced this event in their proposed resolutions to the senate. Additionally,

members of the collective said the investigation to identify the members at the protest targeted minorities on campus.

The student collective is not the only student group to call out the administration on institutionalized racism.

The Black Student Task Force, made up of the UO Black Women of Achievement and the Black Student Union on campus, protested institutional racism on campus in the fall of 2015. The group emphasized systemic issues with UO and presented a list of demands to address these issues.

that less than half of their 12 demands had been fulfilled. They continued to fight for more changes after their protest.

Most recently, the university is working to change the multicultural requirement to educate students about the racial history of the United States.

Issues with the conduct code Members of the collective also expressed their disappointment with the student conduct process at the senate meeting, and included their criticisms in its resolution. They said that the administration’s investigation targeted minorities and the student conduct disciplinary process was confusing.

Administration could not provide a comment on a specific disciplinary case out of privacy of the students.

Crisp said she feels the student conduct process at the UO treated students as though they were guilty until proven innocent rather than innocent until proven guilty.

When a student receives student conduct charges they are notified of the charges and have seven days to respond before administration will proceed with the process. Students then attend an administrative conference to discuss the incident in question. Following the conference the student will receive a written decision finding them “responsible” or “not responsible.”

The administration used Facebook to identify the students at the protest to file the charges against them. This process led to false charges against Lola Loustaunau who did not attend the protest. She was charged after she marked that she was going to the protest though the Facebook event page.

In many cases, the students who were charged with conduct violations had to seek their own legal counsel, according to Crisp. The students were told by the student conduct office to talk to the Office for Student Advocacy. However, according to Crisp, they cannot take multiple cases at once with the same charges, leaving many students to seek their own legal counsel or plead guilty to their charges.

“I let the system tire me out,” Crisp said.

Following their experience navigating the process, the collective proposed changes to the student conduct code that have been discussed in the Student Conduct Committee.

These include the addition of student peers in the judgement process in cases involving free speech. The peers could be present during the administrative conference to advocate for the student being charged during the disciplinary process.

Sandy Weintraub, director of student conduct and community standards, said the committee is slated to propose changes to the Board of Trustees in June. The possible changes to the conduct code would be presented there and must be approved by the Board of Trustees before final changes are made.

“The idea behind the student conduct code is to create a set of community standards that allows everyone at the university to have a positive experience in their education that is free from being harmed by others,” Weintraub said.

According to Weintraub, it is too soon to say if any changes the collective proposed will be presented to the Board of Trustees.

For Miranda Elish, it was perfect.

In the back-end of Oregon’s doubleheader versus Portland State on Tuesday, Elish retired all 21 Vikings that stepped to the plate, recording the first perfect game of her collegiate career in a 3-0 Ducks win.

Elish struck out a career-high 16 batters in a performance that had her coaches, teammates and many in attendance at Jane Sanders Stadium buzzing.

“It was really cool. It was really special,” Elish said. “On that last pitch when I had [Kaela Morrow] down 0-2, I was like, ‘You got this.’”

Elish surely had it on Tuesday. There’s dominant, and then there’s what the sophomore put together versus Portland State.

In the front-end of the doubleheader — an 8-2 Oregon win — the Vikings scored its two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Any momentum that Portland State may have hoped to take from the end of game one into the start of game two hit a brick wall when Elish stepped into the circle.

“Her ball was really moving. She was hitting locations in and out,” head coach Mike White said. “I wouldn’t want a bat in my hand against her tonight.”

the ball could be considered a win for any Vikings batter that stepped into the box. Elish struck out at least two batters in each of the seven innings, which included seven in a row and 10 of the last 11 batters she faced.

With Elish getting the number of swings and misses that she did, the Ducks defense behind her didn’t have much work to do.

However, they came up big when it counted.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, the Vikings’ Hannah Self hit a tough chopper to second baseman Lauren Lindvall that had the potential to find its way through the infield.

Lindvall, though, was able to field it cleanly and record the out, end the inning and keep Elish’s bid for a perfect game alive.

“Lauren Lindvall on that one really saved my butt,” Elish said.

As dominant as Elish was from the start, the Oregon bats weren’t giving her any support for much of the game. The Vikings’ Emma Detamore had a nice outing of her own, and kept Oregon scoreless through the first four innings.

“You always get worried that they could get one lucky hit, or a home run pops out of the ballpark and all of a sudden you get a loss,” said White.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Oregon offense was able to give Elish the run she needed when Alexis Mack roped a two-out, RBI single

up the middle to score Lauren Burke to give Oregon the 1-0 lead.

A two-run home run from April Utecht in the bottom of the sixth inning put Oregon up 3-0 and gave Elish some insurance.

Insurance that Elish appreciated, but didn’t need on Tuesday. With three outs to go, Elish finished the deal in a manner that was almost inevitable — striking out the side.

“That last strikeout felt awesome,” Elish said.

“I couldn’t have done it without my teammates.

Every game is a special game because I’m on the field with my best friends.”

Game 1: Oregon 8, Portland State 2 Before Elish put together a historic performance, Maggie Balint threw the ball well in the Ducks 8-2 win over Portland State in the front-end of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Balint went the distance, giving up two runs in seven innings. It was her first complete game since a 5-1 Oregon win on March 3.

The Ducks put baserunners on throughout, and the applied pressure resulted in runs crossing the plate. A two-RBI single from Mack got the Oregon offense rolling in a four-run second inning. The Ducks tacked on a run apiece in the third and fourth inning, and two more in the bottom of the sixth.

TROY BROWN WILL FORGO COLLEGE ELIGIBILITY, BECOME PROFESSIONAL

Oregon men’s basketball freshman Troy Brown Jr. announced on Tuesday that he will become a professional, forgoing his college eligibility.

“I know my time was very short, but I’ve made a ton of memories and friendships that will last a lifetime,” Brown said on Twitter. “I would like to thank everyone at the University of Oregon for all they’ve done to help me get to this point.” Brown, a 6-foot-7 forward, averaged 31.2 minutes over his 35 games for Oregon. He shot 44.4 percent from the field while averaging 11. 3 points per game.

“Troy called me shortly after 1 p.m. today and informed me that he has decided to declare for the NBA Draft,” head coach

Dana Altman said in a statement. “I told Troy we fully support his decision, and wish him the best.

“We really enjoyed working with Troy this year. He is a terrific young man and we look forward to the next chapter of his career in the NBA.” Brown is the is the first Duck to declare for the NBA Draft following his freshman season.

The Las Vegas native was a five-star recruit for Oregon and had the task of filling a Final Four sized void left by the team before him.

In several mock drafts, Brown is listed as a first round choice. Last season, Jordan Bell, Tyler Dorsey and Dillon Brooks all were picked in the second round of the NBA Draft

while Chris Boucher was picked up by the Golden State Warriors on a two-way contract.

All four have played in the NBA this season.

Fortunately for the Ducks, Brown looks to be the only non-senior leaving for the NBA Draft as fellow freshman Kenny Wooten tweeted on March 21 that he would not enter the draft and will return to Eugene for his sophomore season.

Oregon will add four freshmen next season, including five-star center Bol Bol, five-star small forward Louis King, four-star shooting guard Will Richardson and four-star power forward Miles Norris as the Ducks look to make the NCAA Tournament after falling short this season.

A DREAM DEFERRED: THE ASSASSINATION OF MLK’S LEGACY

Fifty years ago, on April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.

Since then, he has become canonized in American culture and portrayed as a universally loved Christian preacher — a passive, nonviolent martyr with a dream of racial unity whose life was cut short by a hate-filled, faceless man.

But to simplify Dr. King into a friendlyfor-all-ages figure when his years of struggle for human dignity are reduced to a singular moment on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial is to do him a disservice, and it would be unlikely that he would be heralded by politicians with bipartisan support.

Dr. King was a radical.

Dr. King was more than just a leader for civil rights. He was an outspoken critic of America’s hypocrisy — he decried the institutional racism of government, American militarism and imperialism and the economic injustices of capitalism.

Although he is largely remembered for filling hearts with hope with his “I Have a Dream” speech, his heartfelt Letter from Birmingham Jail illustrates how the American Dream was instead the American Nightmare for Black Americans, who suffered vicious lynchings, police brutality, perpetual poverty and segregation.

In his 1963 book, Why We Can’t Wait, Dr. King recognizes the economic subjugation and physical separation of black Americans and poor whites – the “veterans of the long siege of denial” under slavery and Jim Crow – and calls for financial reparations to help correct the decades of injustice.

King would later expand on this issue of class in American politics in his 1967 book, Where We Go From Here. He writes, “I will not dwell on the experiences of poverty that derive from racial discrimination,

but … the poverty that affects white and Negro alike.” King recognized that black Americans experience targeted discrimination but also saw racism as a mechanism used to divide black and white Americans in pursuing their shared interest of economic betterment.

In addition to his calls for economic justice, Dr. King also advocated for the end of violence against the black community.

He then extended his scope to protect people around the world from one of the greatest sources of violence – the United States. As the Vietnam War intensified and countless American and Vietnamese lives were lost, Dr. King gave a speech in a New York church where he called for the end of the war and recognized that American violence against black Americans at home was no different than American violence abroad.

“I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today: my own government,” Dr. King said.

But his scathing critique of American social order was unpopular throughout the country, and only 32 percent of Americans held a favorable view of Dr. King two years before his death. After his “I Have a Dream” speech, Dr. King was called “the most dangerous Negro of the future in this Nation from the standpoint of communism, the Negro and national security” in a memo by an FBI domestic intelligence officer. Dr. King was then quickly approved for surveillance.

This stands in stark contrast to today, with 94 percent of Americans viewing him favorably. Now, Dr. King’s name adorns countless streets and schools, is endlessly invoked by politicians to demonstrate their upstanding morality and he

has a national holiday.

Although Americans have essentially elevated Dr. King to sainthood, they have deferred his dream and his radicalism, and America’s sores of inaction have festered as a result. Americans are plagued with gun violence, the black community continues to reel from disproportionate police brutality and the working class continues to struggle with stagnant wages.

If Dr. King were alive today, he would have called for nonviolence as well as direct action, integration as well as black empowerment, and equality as well as democratic socialism. He would have condemned gun violence, marched with Black Lives Matter and stood with union workers for a higher minimum wage.

Simplifying Dr. King’s message into peace and unity by excluding his denouncement of the oppressive and exploitative American culture that transcends race and class is self-serving and misconstrues his message. The convenient whitewashing of these ideas removes the idea of challenging power and promotes a bastardized version of activism through passiveness and submissiveness. This amounts to a second assassination of Dr. King and what he stood for 50 years later.

Instead, we must embrace Dr. King for who he truly was to let his dream explode into action. As long as millions of Americans suffer in poverty, indignity, violence or punishment because of the color of their skin, their class or our inaction, we have deferred Dr. King’s dream. We must have love, compassion and a quest for justice for those who still suffer in this country and around the world, whether they are white or whether they are black – that is the dream.

Until then, his dream will continue to dry up like a raisin in the sun.

DO OUR POLITICIANS CARE FOR OUR LIVES?

There is a cancer in our political system. It seems as though the folks elected to public office care more about money than people. The National Rifle Association (NRA) has given Representative Greg Walden $39,250 in total since 1998, as reported by the Washington Post. Walden represents Oregon’s 2nd district, covering Medford to the entire east side of the Willamette Valley.

I wanted to follow the money trail, so I called his office. I was redirected from the legislative office in Washington D.C. to the local office in Bend to the press contact and was then left on voicemail at the campaign office. I called repeatedly for two days. The lack of transparency creates distrust between those in office and everyday constituents.

Walden’s silence on the Parkland shooting and refusal to publicly take a stance on bills addressing gun control is weak. It illustrates the lack of concern he has for his constituents. While state legislature passed Oregon’s bill

strengthening gun control by prohibiting any person with a domestic violence conviction from owning a firearm, nothing has been done on the federal level. How many more people have to die for us to see change?

Admirably, many organizations for gun control have put together data and numbers on who benefits from NRA donations and how it correlates to how public citizens vote for gun safety.

However, this work for gun control should not just burden those who are dealing with the trauma of gun violence.

The movement for gun control needs to be intersectional and acknowledge the disparities between different communities that deal with gun violence.

Those with privilege need to stand behind them and elect officials who represent these values. Imagine a campaign on a ticket which believes that people don’t deserve to die from gun violence.

How would someone justify voting against that candidate?

Our political system continues to kill our children. Work happening within the political institution and in the community are both vital because our lives are inherently political. I hope that every politician who has accepted money from the NRA knows they have blood on their hands. The 2018 midterm election is approaching. Vote them out.
