TO CREATE LIFE-SIZED DOLLHOUSE FOR BURNING MAN

Imagine a dollhouse. Not a pink, Barbie-themed mansion, but an antique, Victorian-style one. Now imagine being able to walk through that dollhouse while creepy dolls turn their heads toward you as distorted music plays in the background.

That’s exactly what the women of House of Strange Rituals art collective intend to create for Burning Man 2019.

House of Strange Rituals, a female-run art collective based in Eugene, was the only Oregon collective awarded the Black Rock City Honoraria Grant by Burning Man to create an art piece for this year’s event.The grant will partially fund their life-sized Dollhouse installation during the week-long eclectic gathering in the desert of Nevada. Their piece was one of 73 installations selected to receive the grant, according to The Burning Man journal.

Tiana Husted and Amanda Langley decided over the summer that they wanted to bring their artwork to Burning Man. Husted and Caitlin O’Rourke attended Burning Man last summer, brainstorming ways they could bring their art to Black Rock City. O’Rourke pitched the idea, and from there, the women assembled a team of artists to bring the Dollhouse to life and form the House of Strange Rituals art collective.

“As soon as we got back from the desert in early September, we pretty much had to immediately get to work. It’s been a wild ride,” Husted said.

The house will be an “augmented tiny house,” said Husted, who is the co-leader of interactivity and sound for the project, along with Langley.

Husted recently graduated from the University of Oregon, and Langley is a graduate student in the intermedia music technology program at UO. Standing at two stories tall, the house will be 20 feet long by 10 feet wide. Like a real dollhouse, the backside will be open, shielded from the desert by plexiglass etched with designs by Lindsay Swing, another member of the collective. Carlye Cannon is the lead builder who designed the house.

The Victorian-era design features a ballroom, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen, each with different interactive, supernatural elements, in addition to decor. The inspiration for the installation is a “seance gone wrong,” said O’Rourke, where spirits haunt the dolls.

general science major and said she is intrigued by oddities. “I like creating little natural history worlds like you would see in museums,” she said.

In addition to some of her oddities displayed throughout the house, Swing’s hand-etched windows will light up when touched, thanks to a conductive ink, she said.

In the ballroom, a Ouija board will reflect the emotions of guests in the house with LED lights that respond to motion and touch. When guests pick up one of the dolls, music in the room will change from a soft, peaceful tune to a distorted and eerie version. These interactive elements, and the etched, touch-responsive windows, make up just a sample of interactive pieces that will be on display in the Dollhouse.

The ephemeral city of Black Rock City, Nevada, where Burning Man takes place is constructed by “Burners” and reaches a population upwards of 80,000 people, then is all deconstructed at the end of the week. Burning Man takes place from Aug. 25 to Sept. 2, leaving House of Strange Rituals about five months to build, decorate, and finalize the Dollhouse before transporting it to the desert.

In the next five months, the artists will host a number of parties, auctions and events to raise funds for their project to make up for what the grant doesn’t cover. Their first event will be a party held in the Old Whiteaker Firehouse on April 6.

The women say they have seen a lot of support from their artist friends already and hope the community will be excited to participate.

“I definitely feel like there’s a strong tie to the arts and a want to support the arts in this community, whether it’s through buying a piece or just showing up to an event,” Swing said about the arts community in Eugene. “Having that support just makes you feel like it’s not a useless endeavor.”

The women of House of Strange Rituals said they hope that their project and their diverse artistic backgrounds will help connect some of the different art scenes throughout Eugene and represent the Eugene arts community on a world stage at Burning Man. “I want to try to bridge the gap between a lot of the arts communities, and I think that our group in particular is really kind of prime for that,” Swing said. “We all do arts in very different ways and reach out to very different communities because of that.”

A LACK OF WOMEN IN STEM

UO AWARDS FEW DEGREES TO WOMEN IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS

There are increasing opportunities for college students who are in the computer science and mathematics fields; however, universities nationwide aren’t seeing as many women earning bachelor’s degrees in computer science.

BY ERIN CAREY • TWITTER @ELCAREY As technology advances, more opportunities appear for college students who are in the computer science and mathematics fields.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in computer and information technology are projected to grow 13 percent from 2016 to 2026, which is faster than the average rate for any occupation.

But nationwide, universities aren’t seeing as many women earning bachelor’s degrees in computer science. According to research done by the National Girls Collaborative Project, women are receiving half of the degrees in biological sciences but only 17.9 percent of the computer science degrees and 43.1 percent of all mathematics degrees.

In 2015–2016, UO’s Department of Computer and Information Science awarded 14 percent of its bachelor’s degrees to women. In 2016–17 and 2017–2018, respectively, 19 and 16 percent of graduates receiving bachelor’s degrees in computer science were women.

In UO’s mathematics department, 13 percent of its bachelor’s degrees in 2015–16 went to women. In 2016–17 and 2017–18, respectively, 35 and 30 percent of the department’s bachelor’s degrees were awarded to women.

Computer science undergraduate studies director Kathleen Freeman said there is a lot of support for students in the major to make sure they succeed, including the Women in Computer Science organization, their most active student group.

getting the support they need in the major,” Freeman said. “So people who are thinking, ‘Oh I need help, I’m not really sure, I’ve never done this before,’ they can always get help and have support.”

Sophomore computer science major and head of recruiting for WiCS, Stephanie Schofield said part of the reason that women and minorities are struggling to continue in the major is because of the relationships between the more inexperienced students and the professors.

“Because the majority of students are coming in with a lot of experience, the professors are catering to them,” Schofield said. “It’s not focusing on the little guy, which a majority of the time happens to be these women that come to our meetings, and they’re complaining and saying, ‘I feel so dumb,’ and they end up giving up.”

WiCS was founded in 1985, and in the past has provided scholarships, K-12 outreach and tutoring and mentoring for women and currently has around 20 members.

WiCS member Sierra Battan majors in both computer science and mathematics and said that at the beginning of every term, she counts how many females are in her classes, and counts again before the first midterm. She said that by that time, a considerable amount of her original count have withdrawn from the class.

“As a society, we stigmatize math and make it seem like only nerds or people who have no friends can be good at it,” Battan said.

Freeman says that the numbers could be better, but there are good

things happening in the computer science department for both men and women who might not have as many skills as they think they need.

“A number of studies show that women tend to underestimate their skills and strengths, so people with the exact same skill set could think that they’re in a different place,” Freeman said. “Plenty of men come into the department not knowing anything either. But there is so much to learn that it can be a heavy lift in those early terms, and everyone is looking around feeling like, ‘everybody here knows more than I do’.”

When Battan tells people that she enjoys math and majors in both

math and computer science, she said she often gets told, “Oh, you must really hate yourself,” and is treated differently because of the stereotype of people who are in these majors.

Battan also says that she’s not convinced that there’s anything the university can do to improve the number of women in STEM courses.

“The sad fact is that women who choose these majors have already accepted this disparity and are willing to deal with it because they truly love the subject,” Battan said. “Sure, we can offer more support for these students, and we could attempt to build up a team of educators that includes more females, but this only helps those that made it that far.”

MT. PISGAH: 4,700 ACRES OF WILDERNESS 7 MILES FROM THE UO

BY JADE STEWART As warmth and sunshine return to Eugene after months of cold and rain, Mount Pisgah starts to transform. Fresh green grass fills meadows, oak trees grow bright new leaves and wildflowers bring splashes of color to the hillsides.

Spring term is the perfect time to visit Mount Pisgah, a 4,700-acre natural area only 15 minutes by car from the University of Oregon. The mountain is still green and untouched by the dry heat of summer, and there are enough sunny days in Eugene to enjoy the park’s many hikes.

Many people are familiar with Mount Pisgah’s main hike to the 1,531-foot summit, but the area has over 30 miles of trails — many of which are much less traveled. These trails cross diverse habitats of fir forests, wetlands, prairies and oak savannas full of fresh life every spring.

Although wildflowers can be found all over Mount Pisgah now, the Water Garden Trails and Pond Trail are especially bountiful with blossoms.

These trails are in a riparian zone close to the river and are easy walks that can be done in a half-hour.

To see both trails, follow the Riverbank Trail from the main parking lot for around a quarter mile, then take a left onto the Lily Pond Trail when the road forks. After another quarter mile, there will be a bridge to the right that you can cross to access the Water Garden Trails. Take a right at the end of the bridge for a loop that brings you back to the Riverbank Trail, which you can follow back to the parking lot.

Another hike that highlights Mount Pisgah’s spring beauty is the Trail Three to Trail Seven loop, with a detour up a small hill. The loop crosses a white oak savanna, which will soon be green with new leaves, and a fir forest already full of fresh ferns. It takes 30 to 45 minutes to hike. There is a bench and a swing at the top of the hill — a perfect spot to watch the sun set over Eugene and Springfield.

This hike starts at the North Trailhead, which you can find by turning left on Frank Parrish Road from Seavey Way when you reach the base of the mountain. Walk uphill from the trailhead and

turn onto either Trail Three or Trail Seven to start the loop. Hike the short trail off of Trail Three to summit the hill, then turn around and take either Trail Three or Seven back down.

A longer trail that is rarely hiked by people in Eugene is Trail Two. This trail winds through more oak savanna and fir forests and ends at the summit. It takes around two hours to walk.

This a good option if you want a satisfying hike to the top but don’t want the crowds that accompany the main trail.

This hike starts at the little-known East Trailhead of Mount Pisgah, which is accessible from Ridgeway Road off Highway 58 near Pleasant Hill.

From the parking lot, walk toward the mountain on the single gravel road, then turn right onto Trail Two and hike to the summit and back.

These three hikes are a great start to exploring Mount Pisgah this spring, but there are many other beautiful trails in the area. Mount Pisgah has a hike for everybody, so take advantage of the next sunny afternoon and get walking.

Eugene has a growing yet manageable beer scene: Local breweries are not too few that we are subject to just one abysmal brew, but not too many that we can’t count them all and never know when another is popping up. In the briefest overview of Eugene, it’s immediately evident that there’s a wide variety of alcoholic concoctions. A lot of cities have beer breweries, some have cider, fewer have braggot, but Eugene has it all, including a thriving community of brewers specializing in barrel aging, local and organic ingredient sourcing and wild and classical fermenting styles.

This town pushes the boundaries of brewing by sending brewers yeast up to space (Ninkasi), and mixing unusual and unexpected flavors. Without further ado, here is a summary of the local breweries with some recommended beers, unique characteristics and a little backstory that makes visiting their tasting rooms all the more worthwhile.

Ninkasi

Ninkasi is debatably Eugene’s most recognized brewery nationwide, but was co-founded by Nikos Ridge and University of Oregon alumnus Jamie Floyd in 2006 with a small, humble beginning in a rented space in Springfield. Ninkasi beers are quite good and the company has a wide selection from IPAs to stouts, although the hometown feel and intimate craft has diminished with their larger-scale production and need for continuity for thousands of cans.

At about $1.50 a can, I recommend Ninkasi’s Prismatic Juicy IPA. It’s a major step-up from a PBR and a comfortable introduction into IPA territory, with a light and fruity flavor on a backdrop of hops.

Oakshire

Founded the same year as Ninkasi, Oakshire took a different route, staying more local and finessing a wide selection of interesting beers, including a barrel-aged selection.

For $5 to $7 a pint, I am excited to try Oakshire’s anticipated April 2019 release of the POG Smoothie, a hazy IPA conditioned with pineapple, orange and guava purees and vanilla PA G E 8

beans. Their website claims that June will sport a Ghostbusters-inspired, literally glowing green sour ale. Well, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Ale Song

Alesong is next level. With experience founding the barrel ageing program for Oakshire, some old friends decided to embark on their own dream and open the doors of Eugene to a local renaissance of eclectic, elaborately cultivated beers.

Nestled in the quaint wine country 20 miles south west of Eugene, the brewers at Alesong don’t offer the cheapest beer, but maybe some of the most exquisite, taking time to barrel age their elixirs, offer some to wild yeasts and blend some in an old Belgian style of brewing.

At around $16 a bottle, this is one of the more expensive breweries near Eugene, but it provides some of the most memorable tastes and overall experiences.

Falling Sky

Falling sky is not a pizza place — not just a pizza place. Serving beer on the University of Oregon campus and at two other brewpubs

in Eugene, the local brewers are consistently changing their beer lineup, adding in sours, IPAs, stouts, smoked beers, ad infinitum.

At about $6 a pint, I recommend ordering one of their IPAs with a lower IBU. Falling Sky makes one of the most balanced yet flavorful IPAs in town, which makes for a refreshing and easy drinking experience.

Steelhead/Mckenzie Brewing

Claiming to be the “first major brewery in Eugene,” Steelhead has held its legacy here for almost 30 years now, and through its journey, the brewery has gone on to win national awards. Steelhead/Mckenzie beers have won medals at the Great American Beer Festival almost every year from 1991 to 2006. Steelhead Brewing started Mckenzie Brewing as its distribution arm in 2014.

The beers on tap recently show that the Steelhead team is still interested in innovating and exploring the unmarked territories of beer. For example, their guavalicious beer is made by adding guava at two different stages of the brewing process and only filtered 80 percent, both of which show the brewers’ creativity and

experimentation in making a fruit beer exactly to their liking.

Agrarian Ale

On a farm north of Eugene near Coburg, Agrarian Ale has offered locals not only beer made from all organic ingredients, but an experience of hand picking hops and visiting a brewery located on the land that supports its fruits. But on March 28, New School (a beer news website) reported Agrarian’s closure, which comes after seasons of ceased production and legal troubles. Its website was shut down, too. Although there could be a chance of resurgence for the farm-to-bottle hero, new bottles aren’t being produced anytime soon. For those looking to get some of the last sips, a few remaining beers can be found at local bottle shops including the Bier Stein and 16 Tons.

The Wheel Apizza

The Wheel Apizza is obviously a Pizza-forward brew pub, but behind the scenes, locally-beloved formerAgrarian Ales head brewer Tobias Schock is now brewing off 4th Avenue and Lincoln Street. Schock is brewing everything from an Imperial stout

aged in whiskey barrels to a barrelfermented and dry-hopped brut IPA. Pints go for $5 to $6 and they even have cans to go, despite their low-key appeal.

Viking Braggot

Beer is made from fermented barley.

Mead is made from honey. Braggot is made from beer and mead, but has about the same consistency of beer with hints of the sweet honey flavor. Viking Braggot churns out a Pacific Northwest-Norse mashup, combining two millennia-old brews using local honeys.

Braggot is one of those drinks you have to grow accustomed to.

Viking Braggot’s lineup concedes to beer nomenclature, so if you know you like IPAs, try the Battleaxe IPA braggot, and fans of red ales, try the Reverence dry hopped red ale. They also make seasonal specialties, and spring’s include fruit forward brews, one using raspberries, another with blueberries and hibiscus.

Coldfire

Founded by two brothers in 2015, Coldfire is not the only local brewery with a former-scientist head brewer.

Their light beers tend to be hopforward with bright tropical fruit notes. The Cumulus Tropicalis, a scientific-sounding name is intended to mean something like tropical cloud, has hints of passionfruit, peach and grapefruit. It’s both a tropical and hazy IPA, that is a relief to drink.

But Coldfire also boasts a wide and impressive array of beer varieties.

Coldfire stands out with some of its beers’ being blended with other drinks such as the First Temptation, a sour ale blended with pomegranate juice, or the Affogato Ice Cream Ale, a coffee cream ale

blended with cold-pressed coffee.

Hop Valley

Hop Valley is a Eugene staple, but was purchased by MillerCoors in 2016.

Local brewers don’t seem to be mad at Hop Valley or their founders, but more so at large beer conglomerates for buying small craft breweries and masquerading as such.

They brew some variety of beers, but overall, produce a lot of IPAs. Their vast IPA setlist at least shows a lot of experimentation: beers with cryo hops, added fruit and lower ABV.

Manifest

Manifest Beer celebrated its anniversary and label release party Friday March 29. Seemingly one of the youngest breweries in town, cofounder and head brewer Brandon Woodruff has actually been around for a while. If you ever heard of Mancave Brewing, that was an earlier form of Manifest Beer, run

by Woodruff in the Whitaker. The Exalted IPA made the jump from Mancave to Manifest, but Woodruff’s new venture has a lot more to offer.

The passionfruit and lychee berliner weisse is somewhere between wheat beer and a sour ale. It is very tropical and incredibly refreshing.

His slogan is “palate altering,” and the beers on tap step out of typical beer classification, testifying to how beer can make a person think.

Freehand

Founded in 2018, Freehand is actually Eugene’s youngest brewery, and although it’s young, it will be turning the heads of beer drinkers.

This artisanal brewery finds its peer with Alesong more than with the other breweries on the list. Founder and brewer Tyrone Reitman deals

with barrel ageing, saison brewing and blending, and incorporating local ingredients. Many of the bottles come with a cork and cage top — an indication of what you might find on the price tag.

Sam Bond

Sam Bond’s Garage is a Eugene music scene staple in the Whitaker district. Sam Bond Brewing, however, was founded in 2013; although it names and produces its beer out of the spirit of the original music venue and pub, the brewing venture is a little more new Whit than it is old Whit. Cans and bottles are minimally distributed in town, but both Sam Bond locations pour their beer, including a nitro stout (an incredible combination) and a hazelnut brown ale that is smooth and rich like Nutella.

Elk Horn

Touting southern food fare, it makes sense that Elk Horn brewery would exceed in tart and acidic ciders, perrys and sour ales to cut through the rich and decadent meats and sides. Elk Horn has won several awards for its Perry (pear cider) and has innovated what cider can include, having brewed with blueberry and acai, peach and kiwi, black currant, raspberries, blood orange and plum. But sours and ciders aren’t the end of their fruit experimentation. They currently have a barrel-aged chocolate orange stout and a milkshake IPA made with tangerine, strawberry and blueberry.

Claim 52

Claim 52 was founded in 2012, but found its downtown home on Willamette Street more recently. They offer a lot of IPAs and hazy IPAs, probably because they’re so popular

right now, but also because the brewers are skilled at making flavorful and robust unfiltered beers. What makes Claim 52 stand out is that it has collaborated with local dispensary TJ’s to brew cannabis-inspired beers and is coming out with a CBD soda.

They also have examples of their innovation currently on tap with a saison using three strains of brett, a smoked stout and a gose — classically brewed with salt — pineapple and strawberry purees and vanilla bean.

WildCraft Cider Works

Eugene’s longtime cider brewer, WildCraft Cider Works, does a lot of special things to set themselves apart and produce an astounding beverage. They frequently source their apples from local communities’ backyards and wild spaces. The bottles are also bottle conditioned (they add yeast right before they cap the bottles to carbonate) and always have an incredible variety of flavors, from plum to quince, and more unheard of ingredients such as nettle and sage. Bottles are a little more expensive than commercial cider brands, but in this instance, you really get what you pay for.

Cyderish

Cider is typically made by fermenting apples; adding in some honey would make it cyser, but slightly fortifying it with brandy technically defines what Cyderish founder and brewer Ryan Werthwein currently makes as “carbonated honey apple wine.” He experiments with bold flavors such as pineapple habeñero; raspberry, basil and serrano; mango ginger; and cucumber infused gin and lime. Cyderish bottles are easy to spot with a slender glass facade and shimmering gold debossing.

BILLIE EILISH TELLS HARD TRUTHS ON ‘WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?’

Billie Eilish has become a household name.

Over the span of a couple years, singersongwriter Eilish has skyrocketed her career from making music in her bedroom with her brother to being one of the biggest artists in the world. After signing to Interscope records in 2018, and with over 16 million Instagram followers and 33 million Spotify monthly listeners, Eilish has become an icon at only 17 years old.

Eilish was born and raised in Los Angeles to a family of musicians and actors. Her brother, Finneas O’Connell, was an inspiration to her musical career, and the two have written many of her songs together. O’Connell also has a successful solo career.

Eilish does not have an extensive discography yet; in fact, she’s pretty much just getting started.

In 2017, she released her first EP, “Don’t Smile At Me.” It was nine tracks of confident alt-pop.

Most of the songs are honest ballads in which she usually refers to specific events in her life (except for “Bellyache,” which is a fictional story about Eilish being a serial killer).

“When We All Fall Asleep” has similar elements to “Don’t Smile at Me,” but is much darker. The album cover itself will tell you that. It shows a dark room, with Eilish at the end of a bed dressed in all white — a demonic look on her face and her eyes completely whited out.

Visuals are a big deal for Eilish. From her oversized, designer streetwear fashion style to her Instagram account to her music videos, the visual element of a Billie Eilish project is crucial.

Eilish has synesthesia that links together different senses in her body. When she hears music, she sees it too.

For the album release, Eilish wanted to bring people into her world. She created “The Billie Eilish Experience,” or what she describes as a self-curated museum/exhibit that premiered the night of the album drop.

Each room was dedicated to a different song from the album, enveloping guests into an all-senses experience to understand the album from Eilish’s perspective. A foam pit, a room filled with pillows and a room of puppies were a few of the things guests could find. The exhibit opening was attended by artists and other celebrities like JID, 6lack, Heidi Klum and Jessie Reyez, among others.

There seems to be a bit of a contrast between who Eilish is when she sings and her personality outside of her work.

If you only listened to her music and knew nothing else, you would think Eilish is an extremely sad, soft spoken, kind of spooky girl.

But her speaking voice, body language and humor show that there is more to the singer.

The album opens up with “!!!!!!!,” a 14-second audio clip of Eilish taking out her Invisalign and

then joking around with her brother. She says, “I have taken out my Invisalign and this is the album.” The two laugh and then it jumps right into the album’s first song, “Bad Guy,” a track about Eilish feeling submissive in a relationship.

The album goes to the next song, “Xanny,” which is about Eilish being the only sober one at a party. As a 17-year-old surrounded by older friends in the music industry, this is something she experiences often.

Eilish experiences night terrors frequently, which plays into the theme of sleep and

nightmares on the album. “Bury a Friend” is from the perspective of the monster under her bed. She reveals she is the monster under her bed and her own worst enemy.

The music on the album is haunting yet beautiful; Eilish is vulnerable, telling hard truths about her life and her past, while remaining confident and bold.

Though the album is only 42 minutes long, Eilish gets a lot across in that time. She puts herself out there and lets the world know that she’s a force to be reckoned with.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TRANSPARENCY IN MODERN JOURNALISM

BY EMMA SPAETH In this age of “fake news,” trust in news media is at an all-time low. Increased use of social media and the internet in recent years have exacerbated this problem. There is a huge increase in misinformation on the internet, and it’s difficult to weed out what is true. Genuine news media publications are faced with a public that no longer knows what to trust. There needs to be a shift in transparency in news publications. If news publications are more transparent in where and how they are crafting these stories and acquiring information, there will be a positive shift in public trust of news.

Transparency can be achieved by taking action and prioritizing the public. Reporters and journalists need to tell the public how they got the story, why they deemed it newsworthy, how they got the information that was included and who their sources were. It is important to respect the audience, and journalists need to take responsibility for the news they are releasing. When talking with journalists and experts to examine how to be more PA G E 1 2

transparent in an effort to shift public trust, the American Press Institute stated, “If journalists are truth seekers, it must follow that they be honest and truthful with their audiences, too.” In order to achieve this, journalists need to make a greater effort “to cite original source material, to offer ways for the audience to participate in the newsgathering process, or to be responsive to requests for correction.” Furthermore, they found that the five keys to credibility were: 1. Support your reporting with sources and show your audiences 2. Collaborate with your audience 3. Attribute information responsibly 4. Offer disclosures and statements of values 5. Correct website and social media errors effectively News agencies need to implement a standard process that ensures everyone is accountable across the board. People are suspicious of the media and some outlets are not trustworthy. By implementing

processes to enhance accountability, publishers will not only have an advantage over other publishers, but they will also help incite trust in the news again.

Opinion articles need to be clearly marked so that the public can distinguish them from objective news. All news outlets have different ways of labeling content which can lead to confusion. There should be a nationwide standard for how articles are labeled. Online media sources should be explicit about disclosing all commercial funding. The public has a right to know what is paid to advertise and what goes into the algorithms that determine what advertisements the public sees.

By being more transparent and honest with the public, by being willing to redact and fix mistakes and by showing how stories are created, the credibility of news and the faith of the public will rise. In our digital world, there are masses of information, some true, some false, and explaining stories and sources will lead to improvements in reporting.

4 YEARS COMING, OREGON SENIORS FINALLY REACH

PORTLAND, Ore. — When Oti Gildon and Maite Cazorla stepped foot on the Oregon campus as freshmen in the fall of 2015, neither one thought the Oregon women’s basketball program would ever step foot on a stage as big as the NCAA Tournament regionals.

It wasn’t even a thought. Yet still, the two believed in the program and stuck with it.

And now, four years later, as seniors, the two are leading the Ducks to their first ever Final Four appearance.

“I owe so much to Oti Gildon and Maite Cazorla,” Oregon head coach Kelly Graves said. “They were the two that really took a chance on us. We didn’t have much to sell at the time other than a beautiful arena ... But they took a chance on us.”

From the WNIT in their first year, to two consecutive Elite Eight runs and now a Final Four, the two women have been with Oregon through the worst of times and also, the best of times, as teammates, roommates and also best friends.

“We weren’t good,” Cazolra said about her first year on the Ducks. “At the time I thought, ‘Oh, we’ll get better.’ But I never thought about coming to the Final Four and it’s just a dream come true.”

At the time of her recruitment, Gildon was Oregon’s highest ranked recruit. Though, throughout her years as a Duck, she’s never been the leading scorer and didn’t start in a game until her junior year. But none of that has never once stopped her from being Oregon’s most consistent sixth-woman player. She’s comes off the bench and instantly becomes Oregon’s missing piece at just the right times.

“Oti gets underlooked, undervalued, perhaps, by maybe people who watch us play or just follow the team kind of at a distance,” Graves said. “But those who knows us, her teammates, she is the rock. She has been the rock for four years. We owe a lot to her.”

Cazorla, one of the team’s starting guards, joined the program and immediately began carving an impact, starting by leading the Pac-12 with 206 assists in her freshman year — which currently ranks third on Oregon’s single-season all-time record list. Since then the Las Palmas, Spain, native has propelled Oregon with her quick pick-and-rolls and her clutch 3-pointers.

Currently, she holds the program record with 141

career starts in 141 games played. But almost more impressively, Cazorla is the first ever Spanish player to make a women’s Final Four.

“She’s like my best friend/sister and I love her,” Gildon said. “I love her for being here and being here with me.”

In the first 35 seconds of Sunday’s first quarter, Cazorla stepped back behind the arc in the corner and unleashed a 3-pointer to score Oregon’s first points of the game. Then, with 35 seconds left in the game, Cazorla hit the dagger 3-pointer to give Oregon an 84-77 lead. She finished the Elite Eight matchup, playing the full 40 minutes, with 11 points, six assists and one rebound.

“I was really glad that Maite stepped up tonight on this biggest stage because she’s going to be a long-time pro and long-time Olympian for Spain,” Graves said. “We’re going to see her playing for many, many years.”

But before that moment, before the game even tipped off, Gildon and Cazorla walked alone to the center of the court. Just like they’ve done every game this season, the two stood and introduced themselves to the opposing team, representing the Ducks as the team’s captains.

And in five days, the two will do just the same, this time at the Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay, Florida, at the Final Four.
