NEWS KAEPERNICK AND NIKE’S LEGACY OF SOCIAL CAMPAIGNS

e University of Oregon and Nike have more than Phil Knight in common. Dan Wieden, the man who coined the phrase “Just do it” in 1988, is also a University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication alumnus. e classic Nike slogan, which has been printed in block lettering on sweatshirts and backpacks for years, was slung into headlines earlier this month when Nike revealed the controversial 30th anniversary ad featuring social justice advocate and ex-NFL star Colin Kaepernick. e ad is black-and-white, and features a closeup of Kaepernick’s face with the words “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.”

It may be too soon to tell how the simple ad will reflect back on the University, said marketing professor Troy Campbell, who also works to help sportswear companies become more inclusive, but didn’t have a hand in the Kaepernick ad. e ad is a direct reference to Kaepernick’s lawsuit against the NFL, in which he is alleging that NFL teams colluded to keep him off the field and out of the draft after his consistent kneeling during the national anthem during the 2016-2017 NFL season in protest of police brutality.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL Media in 2016 after he first kneeled, according to Bustle.

“To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. ere are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Kaepernick first took a knee during the anthem in August of 2016 when he was playing for the San Francisco 49ers in a game against the Green Bay Packers. His then coach, Chip Kelly, who served as

head coach of UO football from 2007 through 2012, supported his protest, according to NFL Media. e ad, which has elicited strong reactions from both supporters and critics of the Black Lives Matter movement, has been called a bold political move by many, but Campbell says that from a business perspective, it was a logical move.

“Big companies tend to follow social trends rather than create them,” Campbell explained.

“Nike is following the moral compass and directionality of America.”

It isn’t the first move Nike has made for social justice. Nike released a video campaign in 1995 advocating for girls sports and Title IX, and has been advocating for LGBTQ+ equality with rainbow Be True gear for several years, and last December, Nike launched its first athletic hijab so that Muslim women can uphold their traditions while still participating in sports.

Still, Campbell said this ad has at least two types of passionate critics.

Many who claim they are boycotting Nike, some of whom have taken videos of their burning shoes, are doing so because they oppose Kaepernick’s protest. Critics, including President Donald Trump, have expressed that the protest was disrespectful to the national anthem, the flag, the armed forces and the country itself.

Trump, who has spoken about this protest a number of times, has gone so far as to say that Kaepernick, and other athletes who have joined him in protest, should be fired.

“Get that son of a bitch off the field right now,” Trump said at a rally in Alabama in 2017, according to the Washington Post.

the protest is offensive.

“What these players don’t seem to understand is that Americans gave their lives so that they could have the freedom to play a kid’s game for a living.

When players disrespect the flag, they disrespect that sacrifice. And it would not matter if they had done so to protest Donald Trump or Barack Obama — their actions would be equally offensive,” iessen wrote in his September 2017 editorial.

“If NFL players want to protest the president, they have plenty of other ways. Attend a rally.

Speak out on Twitter. Tell the media after the game, ‘I stood up for America but I stand against Donald Trump.’ But don’t show contempt for the flag.” ere are also proponents of the Black Lives Matter movement who are critical. Some say that the ad, specifically the video component, is watering down Kaepernick’s message and negating the revolutionary aspect of the protest.

“For all you people who think Nike is not going far enough right now, instead of tweeting why Nike sucks, why not tweet somebody who isn’t doing enough, and invite them to do more and show them how to do it,” Campbell said. “If you care enough to write on social media that you think Nike isn’t doing enough, then hopefully you care enough to help someone in your life to take that next step forward.”

Campbell explained that although it is too soon to tell, there is still a good chance that the Nike ad will be productive for the social justice movement. “[ e ad is] taking a revolutionary concept and it’s fusing it with an incredibly dominant ideology in America which is Nike’s Just Do It, be yourself, very rugged American vibe,” Campbell said. “When people see this, they will no longer see Black Lives Matter as in conflict with advancing America.”

A NEWS MOST UO FRATERNITIES WILL BE BANNED FROM SERVING LIQUOR BY SEPTEMBER 2019

Most University of Oregon and other college fraternities will no longer be able to serve hard liquor in fraternity chapter facilities, the North-American Interfraternity Conference announced on Sept. 4 in a press release. e NIC decision comes as part of a series of health and safety initiatives implemented by the national fraternity organization after nationwide bingedrinking and hazing-related deaths in fraternities this year.

“At their core, fraternities are about brotherhood, personal development and providing a community of support. Alcohol abuse and its serious consequences endanger this very purpose,” said NIC President Judson Horras in the press release.

Pennsylvania State University student Timothy Piazza, Florida State University student Andrew Coffey and Texas State University student Matthew Ellis were some of those who suffered hazing-related deaths in 2017.

Piazza’s parents have since formed an anti-hazing coalition that aims to strengthen state hazing laws and expand education for high school and college-aged students, according to NJ.com. e majority of fraternities at UO are members of the NIC, which will require its fraternities to adopt policies banning drinks that are 15 percent or more alcohol by volume by September 2019.

e UO Interfraternity Council, which is a committee consisting of the 16 NIC fraternities at UO, will meet in mid-October to craft specific policy points, but it is unclear what the specific policy will look like. “ e UO Interfraternity Council will follow the NIC decision,” said UO Fraternity and Sorority Life Director Caitlin Roberts. “We just don’t have the specifics of what that will look like yet.”

UO recognizes 16 NIC-affiliated chapters on campus, including Pi Kappa Alpha, Delta Tau Delta and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. e resolution, adopted by the NIC on Aug. 27, bans hard liquor “in any chapter facility or at any chapter event,” including the private living spaces of students who are 21 or older.

But hard liquor may still be served by third-party vendors at registered fraternity events. Additionally, alcohol can be served in common spaces, but only during social events. “ ere’s really nothing more to share at this time,” Roberts said in an email on Wednesday.

Non-NIC fraternities, such as Sigma Lambda Beta, will not be affected by the ban.

UO IFC President Sam Michaan did not immediately respond to phone calls and emails for comment. UO IFC Vice President Carter Kruse and Director of Community Engagement Owen Kemp declined to be interviewed for this story.

NEW DEAN WANTS MORE WELL-ROUNDED HONORS COLLEGE

Gabe Paquette said he has always resisted choosing between his various academic passions.

A history professor by trade, the new dean of the Robert D. Clark Honors College has spent time studying philosophy, government, biology and multiple foreign languages. So when he heard the Honors College was looking for a new dean, he saw it as a way to return to a time before he made his academic choice.

“I found myself increasingly interested in the undergraduate experience as a whole,” he said of his time teaching history at Johns Hopkins University, his most recent job. “I became interested in the experience not just in the individual classroom but kind of their experience in all senses. How are all the different courses fitting together as a part of coherent curriculum? How were their experiences outside of the classroom fitting together with their areas of emphasises and their studies?”

Paquette is just three weeks into his new role at the honors college. His office is barely set up — three lonely books dwarfed by the large bookcase they are situated in are the only evidence someone occupies the office. But Paquette already has plans to fundamentally change the future of the honors college.

First on the to-do list for Paquette is implementing the new faculty model for the honors college that was conceived last year under interim dean Karen Ford. e new faculty model involves hiring faculty members from around the University of Oregon from departments underrepresented in the honors college, like the sciences, philosophy and law. e new professors will be Dare Baldwin, Michael Moffitt, Daphne Gallagher and Nicole Dudukovic. “ ere have been some moves to integrate the sciences,” Paquette said. “But I think there was still a feeling that many of the students in the honors college were either in STEM disciplines or they felt as if their own academic interests were not entirely being met by the curriculum of the honors college.”

However, Paquette said he wants to make sure the faculty expansion doesn’t detract from the traditional emphasises of the honors college: history and literature.

“I think the easy thing to say is, ‘Well let’s just open it up and bring

in everyone — everyone has a little piece of the pie.’ In Spanish they call that ‘cafe para todos,’ which means ‘coffee for all,’” he said. “We have to make sure that it doesn’t become so heterogeneous that there isn’t a coherent experience which is offered.”

In the past, students raised two major concerns about the honors college: differential tuition and ability to graduate in a timely fashion. e Emerald’s past reporting on the honors college found that 40 percent of students drop out by fall of their senior year. 15 percent of those students cited financial reasons for leaving. e Board of Trustees voted in March to reduce honors college differential tuition, from $4,194 to $2,700, a step Paquette thinks could help quell the financial concerns of students.

“I think ideally differential tuition would be reduced to zero,” he said. “And I know that is a long term goal. But I think this a really important step in the right direction.”

As for students’ ability to graduate on time, Paquette said that because academic planning happens within separate colleges at the UO, the credit and requirement structure is not always in harmony between the rest of UO and the honors college.

“I promise you that there was no deliberate neglect of student concerns,” he said. “I think one of the tasks which I have is to make sure the honors college is fully integrated into the rest of the university in such a way we can address those issues of making sure that requirements are not such that they cause tremendous hardship on students in all sorts of ways.”

While he does not plan on teaching until next school year, Paquette said he wants to be an active dean. Whether that manifests itself as open office hours or regular meetings is still up in the air. A email from Paquette to all honors college students is also expected to be sent out early next week.

“Sometimes you learn the most about what is happening in college from more informal interactions, the classroom rubbing of elbows, chance encounters,” Paquette said.

“I want to make sure that I am committed to making sure that students aren’t just honors college students but they are actually helping to shape the future of the honors college.”

REMEMBERING MAC MILLER: ONE OF THE MOST REFRESHING ACTS IN HIP-HOP

BY DONNY MORRISON Many great artists died at 27. Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, etc. e list goes on. e phenomenon of creatives dying at the age of 27 is well-documented.

Mac Miller, born Malcolm James McCormick, passed away on Sept. 7, just four months away from turning 27. On “Brand Name,” a song from his 2015 album, “GO:OD AM,” Mac briefly mentions his desire to not join the long list of artists having met an early death at 27: “To everyone who sells drug Don’t mix it with that bullshit I’m not trying to join the 27 club” As of now (Monday, Sep.17th), we don’t know Mac’s exact cause of death, but these lyrics may prove to be more prophetic as time goes on. e similarities between Mac and the untimely deaths of the aforementioned artists are undeniable. Each artist found success relatively early, spending a majority of their early twenties under a pop culture microscope.

Each artist had publicly struggled with alcoholism and substance abuse, often using their music to explore themes of excess and mental-illness — a combination that can be described as the contemporary speedball.

But now isn’t the time for preachy anti-drug

messages. e disease of addiction is never that simple to begin with. Now is not the time to assign blame to those around him, to those who loved him or to those impacted by his death in ways we’ll never understand. Now is not the time to pretend you understand.

Now is the time to memorialize an artist who consistently reinvented himself in ways that were both exciting and unexpected.

Every album that came after his frat rap debut sounded sonically different and felt fully realized in ways that are uncommon for a younger artist.

Mac’s first album “Blue Slide Park” became the first independently distributed debut album to premiere at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart in 16 years. e record became a soundtrack for angsty high schoolers who fell in love with an energy that was more concerned with having fun than being emotionally deep.

For many, listening to Mac Miller captures the feeling of being young. He’s the sound of inescapable nostalgia, bringing about equal amounts of pain and pleasure.

Normally, when an artist changes his sound as drastically as Mac did from album to album, they would end up alienating a part of their fan base that fell in love with the previous record.

at wasn’t the case for Mac. He grew up with his audience. e progression of his music followed the narrative arc of young people who have struggled to find a purpose.

His sophomore album, “Watching Movies With the Sound Off,” is worlds away from his whimsical debut. It’s dark and brooding and he’s constantly exploring the merits of his own existence. It’s similar to what a high schooler feels when they find out they don’t have a clue who or what they will become.

His music gives hope and continually displays a love for hip-hop that’s both rare and under-appreciated among contemporary rap acts. It’s through this love that he’s able to reach so many people. To love something is a relatable feeling, but to share this love so willingly and with such vulnerability takes a special kind of person.

Mac is one of the rare hip-hop artists who almost never made an enemy. He exuded positivity and opened his home to creatives from all around the world. His singular purpose was to avoid the existential dread he openly rapped about on his songs by making music with his friends; and we’re so glad he did.

THE FREEDOM THOUGHT COLLECTIVE SHOWCASES MULTI-GENRE ROSTER OF BANDS

BY JORDAN MONTERO • TWITTER @MONTERO_JOR After years of helping aspiring musical acts achieve their dreams, Eugene’s Sky Guasco and the Freedom ought Collective, a local group of grass-root band managers, are now able to properly celebrate all of their hard work during a week-long, live music celebration: the Freedom ought Fest. roughout the weekend, the Freedom ought Collective teamed up with WildCraft Cider Works and Sam Bond’s Garage to host a plethora of live musical performances as part of their first festival. In addition to raising community awareness, the funds raised from the $10 admission fee will go right back into the FTC to invest further into their bands. e festival kicked off on Friday, Sept. 14, with performances continuing on the 15th and 16th. e final show of the festival will be this Wednesday, Sept. 19. e Freedom ought Collective is a crew of impassioned contributors that help up-and-

coming bands navigate through the murkiness of booking tours, finding transportation and employing marketing strategies, among other services. Where more traditional managers lack the experiences of being on the road and playing shows, Guasco is intimately familiar with the tour life.

For years, Guasco managed the Eugenebased reggae fusion band Sol Seed, a group that he played keyboard and vocals in.

“Once we started touring, we realized that we’re a D.I.Y. band from the beginning. I’ve always been the booking agent, the band manager out of necessity,” Guasco said. “Over the years, we learned how to do these things and it’s definitely not been easy, but it’s been extremely valuable now that we can look back on it.”

Over time, younger bands began reaching out to Guasco for guidance, and the Sol Seed keyboard and vocalist said he felt responsible

to share the knowledge that he feels privileged for having.

“It does us no good to keep our knowledge close to the chest — that doesn’t help anybody grow,” he says. “But if we’re able to be that service for folks, we can help everybody grow.”

With that mindset, Freedom ought Collective has grown into a sizable managing organization with 12 bands and 12 contributors in various spots around the country. And though his roster of performing acts spans across different genres of music, it’s the bands’ drive and passion that Guasco said ties them all together.

“I’ll get behind anybody that believes in themselves,” Guasco said.

And the Freedom ought Fest was the perfect opportunity for the bands — and Guasco — to showcase what the collective is all about to the community that has supported them for years.

7 ARTS & CULTURE “We have kind of everything going on [at the fest,] and we’re pretty stoked to have all these different genres and musicians coming through,” Guasco said. e festival’s featured performances began on Friday night at WildCraft as their funk and groove bands owned the stage. DJ Reggae Rob opened the night with a setlist of hip-hop and reggae breakbeats to get the atmosphere going in the venue’s upstairs loft. e eclectic four-piece from Sacramento, California, ZuhG, offered its groovy takes of funk, reggae and folk for an hour while patrons danced along.

“I feel a real appreciation for music here in Eugene in the couple times that I’ve been here,” ZuhG guitarist Dylan Crawford said.

“You never know what the general vibe of each city or each town is gonna be towards live music, and it seems to be really fertile, really dank here.”

Corvallis’ Despite e White closed the night with big band funk accented by enthralling bass lines and a section of five punchy horns. ere was an element of child-like glee to their performance as they whipped through renditions of Luigi’s Mansion, Mario Kart soundtracks and the theme to Hey, Arnold!

Saturday night offered more indie and hip-hop-related acts to the WildCraft audience. e Creative Types played a mix of R&B ballads and lively hip-hop tracks to open up the night.

Smyth and Brax of the Breakfast Boys

Leisure League followed this performance up with neck-snapping beats, a steady flow of bars and an outlandishly fun stage presence. e Saturday performances came to a wonderfully charming conclusion with the Eugene-based band Laundry, who’s indie rock featured tinges of surf and blues.

Coloso and Chiefed later performed at the Freedom ought Fest after party at Sam Bond’s Garage, which celebrated 100 years of live music in Eugene.

FTC’s folk groups jammed at WildCraft on Sunday evening, as Laura Ivancie and Liz Chibucos of the band Far Out West delivered tasteful acoustic sets. e Freedom ought Fest will come to a close on Wednesday night, with the Collective rolling out its hand of exciting reggae bands. Carolina-based groups Treehouse! and Bubba Love will be opening up for Sol Seed to conclude the inaugural Freedom ought Fest. e music will begin at 8 p.m. with a $10 cover at the entrance.

Guasco wants to remain realistic when it comes to the funds raised at his group’s Fest, but he holds the belief that success isn’t necessarily measured by how much money is made.

“I just think that people are gonna start looking around the room and be like ‘Wow, this is a good show,’” Guasco said. “ at’s gonna lead to conversation, that’s gonna lead to questioning, that’s gonna lead to open arms and making new friends, and that’s what this is all about, man.”

DID YOUR PROFESSOR WRITE YOUR TEXTBOOK?

As students glance over their syllabus while standing between the shelves of the UO Duck Store, they might notice that the name of their professor seems eerily similar to the name on their required books list.

For students in almost any field, this can be the case — the professor not only wrote a textbook, but requires it for their class.

To some, it might seem wrong for a professor to use their authority in the classroom and profit from the sale of a book, with potential concerns for bias in their own books and withholding the opportunity for students to read other texts on the subject.

On average, a textbook author can make anywhere from five to 15 percent in royalties for their textbooks, according to an article written by Dr. David Rees of Southern Utah University.

So if a University Math II textbook costs $110, at 10 percent per 30 students in their class, that’s $330. After teaching five, 30-student classes, that’s $1,650 in royalties alone.

But if a professor is an expert in their field, why wouldn’t they use the text they wrote — a text that is likely on the forefront of the discipline’s research, and perfectly suited for the course?

At the University of Oregon, there is no policy in regard to an instructor or professor writing or requiring a textbook they’ve written, according to UO Spokesperson Tobin Klinger.

Polytechnic Institute and State University doesn’t allow a professor to require their written text unless the use is approved by departmental, collegiate and university-level committees.

Professors at the University of Maryland cannot “personally profit from the assignment of materials” without authorization from a department chair. Along with UO, neither Oregon State University nor Portland State University have policies either.

Beth Peters is a science major at UO who has had professors write many of her textbooks. For her, it’s a fine line of what is ethical and what is not.

“I believe that the books that my [science] professors have written are more acceptable because they are less factual and more procedural,” Peters said. “But I can see why it might be inappropriate for some professors to write their own textbooks if they only include their opinions and not the other side of the argument, and if they do it just to benefit themselves by having people buy their material.”

And in liberal arts, some students in that field find it questionable when a professor writes their own textbook, because of the limited points of view.

“I don’t think professors should regularly be assigning books they wrote for their courses, even if it is in their field of expertise and is within the subject of the course study,” said Jill Tydeman, a UO graduate. “Liberal arts subjects necessarily require a more broad perspective than would be allowed if the professor were teaching their own point of view and used their own work to support

and contextualize it.”

Faculty at UO such as Janne Underriner, the director of the Northwest Indian Language Institute, are writing their own texts, but doing so with the intention of improving their classes and filling in gaps they might find in other textbooks.

For those who are specialists in their field, it might be the best way to teach in their subject.

Underriner says writing a textbook is something that she and her colleagues have wanted to do with the Lane Community College program Chinuk Wawa for a long time.

“Every year we create handouts and edit them and add to them,” Underriner said. “We just really want more speaking activities, students want more opportunities to speak the language with each other and for us to create more audio material so students can hear the language. It’s been a dream for many years, and last year I just said, ‘let’s do it.’”

Underriner has taken to studying textbooks from Spanish or French, but with a language that has a smaller community, it’s difficult. “ ere’s no place to go. ere’s no other books to look at,” Underriner said. “It’s not like if I want to write a new Spanish textbook, then I can sit down and review 20 textbooks.”

It’s not only linguistics professors who write textbooks. John Russial, a professor in the School of Journalism and Communications, wrote his newspaper editing textbook in 2003 and still uses it in his classes.

According to Russial, the motivation to write a textbook for most professors is not in the money, but in filling gaps they see in the available textbooks. With his textbook, he can cover topics like search engine optimization in class.

“I wrote the text because a publisher asked me to, and I wanted to write several chapters on subjects that I didn’t think were covered well by other texts available,” Russial wrote in an email to the Emerald. “Plus, the other texts were expensive. I said I would write a text if the publisher would keep the price low.”

A Price Tag for Your Materials For many students, a major concern when it comes to school is how much they will spend on textbooks and other supplies. According to UO’s Institutional Research, students are spending roughly $1,125 on books and supplies alone.

According to Alex Lyons, chief information officer for the UO Duckstore, textbook prices are driven by the publishers, despite what they try to do to circumvent those costs.

IN ROYALTIES “We’ll try and source from wholesalers that work in a used marketplace. ere’s also channels where we can offer rentals so we can further discount those prices for students,” Lyons said. “Because if we go direct publisher, that’s where our costs are the highest, and we pass along those savings to the students. But if we have to buy it new, our cost also goes up.”

In a survey done by Cengage, 85 percent of students are financially stressed by textbooks and class materials, and 87 percent said that textbooks and course materials were overpriced and “not worth the money.”

Many students rent books through sites like Amazon or Chegg, but sometimes a textbook

isn’t popular enough to be available. “ ere were very few alternative options for textbooks when I was at UO,” said Jill Tydeman, a UO graduate. “I’m sure if I had been more tech-savvy I could have found them online, but I bought all of my books through the campus bookstore and tried to buy used whenever possible. I also leveraged friends and their connections to try to buy used books directly from other students.”

At a Financial Aid standpoint, the amount set for textbooks and supplies is averaged instead of using a nationally set figure, according to Associate Vice President and Director of Financial Aid, Jim Brooks.

“It’s up to the institution — they can use a figure, or they can use an average,” Brooks said.

“Most institutions I know, including this one, use an average because it’s really hard to know what a student is going to spend.”

According to Brooks, students can get an increase on their allotment for class materials, but only with proof that they’re taking more than the average class load.

For many students, the ability to take a class may come down to their ability to afford the textbook.

Some professors are writing textbooks to advance their field of study, others to lower the cost of texts by arguing with a publisher to keep the price low. Despite these good intentions, textbook writing is an area where money can be made by anyone who is a professional in their field.

With UO having no policy on the matter while other universities have stricter requirements for one reason or another, the jury is still out on whether it’s okay for a professor to require their own text.

“If the professor is a subject matter expert and the course is so specific that there is little other source material on the subject, then I think it’s okay,” UO Alumna Allie Gavette said. “Otherwise, it feels kind of like they’re taking advantage.”

OPINION A SECOND OPINION ON BEING FAT, HAPPY AND HEALTHY

BY LESLIE SELCER Recently, the Emerald ran a piece titled “Health doesn’t come in supersized portions” which offered a critique on the “Health At Every Size” (HAES) campaign. While I don’t subscribe to the HAES campaign— because I don’t believe it is radical enough — the arguments leveled against it were not unfamiliar to me as a fat woman involved in body positivity. Many people who are new to body positivity movements perceive them as having little respect for the “science” and “facts” of the obesity crisis.

Perhaps those who are alarmed by the way that body positivity rejects traditional notions of “health” simply fail to see health as a full picture — one which

crucially includes mental health.

Body positivity calls attention to the fact that physical health cannot simply be achieved through the mental warfare of fat-shaming.

Which might be why, according to their homepage, HAES’s primary components are: respect, critical awareness and compassionate self-care.

With regard to exercise, HAES states that they help members with “finding the joy in moving one’s body and being physically active.”

For fat people, exercise is so often made into a practice of self-hatred: We are meant to punish our bodies mercilessly until they conform to some magical goal weight — at which point, presumably, we are

meant to transform into happy people with high self-esteem. But the truth is that you can’t internalize feelings of inadequacy, shame and disgust for years and then expect them to disappear just because your BMI registers as “normal.”

In my own experience as an undergrad at CU Boulder (which has the highest rates of eating disorders on college campuses in the nation, and is located, uncoincidentally, in the thinnest city in the United States), I often felt out-of-place. is feeling was manageable until a peer announced in class that she loved running past fat people on the indoor track because it made her feel good to see them struggling more than she did.

After her comment, I stopped going to public gyms altogether. I was horrified by the idea that this is what thin people actually thought about seeing bodies like mine mid-exercise.

Believe it or not, being exposed to more positive views of fatness probably would have helped me get back in the gym after that incident. e stigma of fatness certainly seems to be one of its greatest contributors. at stigma is exactly why body positive movements work so diligently to avoid messages of shame, in both exercise and eating.

For example, HAES discusses diet not in terms of weight loss, but rather in terms of “eating in a flexible and attuned manner that values pleasure and honors internal cues of hunger, satiety and appetite, while respecting the social conditions that frame eating options.”

HAES’s recognition that systemic conditions often determine eating and exercising behaviors is crucial. ose who have never lived in a food desert, suffered from food insecurity or dealt with other restrictions may not understand that financial, cultural and emotional relationships with food can be complicated.

Being able to access unprocessed food is a privilege; so is having time to prepare food at home; so is having a vehicle for grocery trips; so is having a good knowledge of nutrition.

Moreover, the science actually does agree with a weight-neutral approach to exercise and nutrition.

In 2015, the American Journal of Public Health ran a study which

suggested that: “ e development of the concept of meeting an ideal weight was the beginning of increasing obesity.

Weight stigma, the perception of being fat, lack of understanding of normal growth and development, and increased concern about obesity... have reinforced each other to promote dieting. Because weight suppression and disinhibition provoke long-term weight increase, dieting is a major factor producing the obesity epidemic.”

Other studies agree. In “Medicare’s search for effective obesity treatments: diets are not the answer,” researchers reviewed 31 long-term weight loss studies. ey found that even when dieting did lead to modest weight loss, “complete weight regain was found in the majority” of participants. One study from the review found that 83% of dieters regained more weight than they had lost after two years; and another found that 50% of dieters “weighed more than 11 pounds over their starting weight five years after the diet.”

Dieting just isn’t cutting it.

Fat acceptance starts with understanding that weight isn’t a simple equation of adding cardio or subtracting brownies.

Fat acceptance means accepting bodies that don’t fit into an arbitrary categorization of what is “normal.”

Fat acceptance also draws on the acceptance disabled bodies, racialized bodies and bodies that are gender-nonconforming.

For me, fat acceptance is a rejection, too: a rejection of unhappiness. Because I can, in fact, be fat while also being happy and healthy.

We live in a toxic culture that glorifies an unrealistic commodified thin-ideal, while also creating systemic barriers that restrict access to better health options. Fat people who have the audacity to love and accept themselves are not the real enemies here. e general cultural trend of pointing fingers and blaming us for perceived personal failures is not the way to solve a public health crisis.

A better way forward is to learn how to treat each other’s bodies with mutual compassion, respect and care— while also working to address the economic and social conditions making it difficult for many Americans to lead healthier lifestyles.

DEALING WITH A TRAGEDY THE WRONG WAY

e last ten months has seen the Hip Hop community coping with the loss of three major artists. Rappers Lil Peep and XXXTentacion passed away earlier this year, but most recently, Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller was found dead in his California home. e death was ruled an apparent overdose which sparked a lot of controversy and misdirected backlash at singersongwriter Ariana Grande due to their recent breakup. eir relationship began two years ago, which led to a newfound happiness that helped Mac sober up and inspired him to write more upbeat songs about love and enjoying life.

Unfortunately, their relationship ended in May of this year. In the following week it became clear that Mac was no longer sober, and only eight days after the break up he crashed his car and was charged with a DUI. Fans flooded Twitter and Instagram with their feelings about the breakup. Most people respectfully tweeted their condolences, but some saw the situation differently, as seen in this popular tweet from user Elijah Flint: “Mac Miller totaling his G wagon and getting a DUI after Ariana Grande dumped him for another dude after he poured his heart out on a ten song album to her called the divine feminine is just the most heartbreaking thing happening in Hollywood.”

is idea not only unjustly villanizes Ariana by blaming her for Mac’s actions, but is also insulting to Mac as it strips him of his personal autonomy. Ariana addressed these ideas in her response by saying that it is, “absurd that you minimize female self-respect and self worth by saying someone should stay in a toxic relationship because he wrote an album about them.”

Fast forward to September 7th when Mac was found dead. e Hip Hop community and fans around the world mourned his death.

Deciding how to react to the death of someone is incredibly difficult and everyone copes differently, but blaming somebody you don’t know is wrong. e dynamic of Ariana and Mac’s relationship remains largely unknown, but Mac’s struggles with drugs and alcohol have always been public knowledge, and acting like these problems were created by Ariana is at best uninformed, and at worst intentionally hurtful.

Regardless of what exactly ended the relationship between Ariana and Mac, it was Ariana’s right to walk away, and how Mac coped with the separation was of his own choosing.

When you’re in a relationship with someone, even if it lasts for a long time, you are never obligated to stay no matter the circumstances.

Mac’s death was untimely and tragic to the outside world, but within his music it almost

sounds like he saw it coming. In one line off the song “Perfect Circle/God Speed” Mac raps: Everybody say I need rehab Cause I’m speedin’ with a blindfold on and won’t be long ‘til they watching me crash And they don’t wanna see that ­ey don’t want me to OD and have to talk to my mother Telling her they could have done more to help me And she’ll be crying saying that she’ll do anything to have me back It’s clear that Mac was honest in his music, which was in part what created his large fan base. Mac’s music feels real and human, chronicling the struggles of a person battling depression and substance abuse. True Mac Miller fans who have listened to his music for what it is and heard the story he’s trying to tell will find his death all the more tragic. Mac knew he was headed down a rough path and he clearly wanted to avoid it, even if only for his family’s sake.

Mac was a wonderful person who touched the lives of many, myself included. He was a smart and genuine guy who knew he had problems, and to blame Ariana for his death is disrespectful to both Ariana’s and Mac’s memory. His music shaped the lives of young people across the country, and though he’s gone, his memory will live on in his music forever.

OREGON VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS HAWAII TWICE TO END NON-CONFERENCE PLAY 7-3

BY MAGGIE VANONI • TWITTER @MAGGIE_VANONI e No. 12 Oregon Ducks finished their non-conference play in the state of Hawaii with back-to-back wins over the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine.

Oregon (7-3) swept Hawaii ursday night with set wins of 2518, 25-23 and 25-22. e Rainbow Wahine (4-5) gave the Ducks a run for their money, pushing Oregon to a five-set win Friday night with scores of 25-23, 25-10, 22-25, 25-23 and 1512 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

After dropping ursday’s match, Hawaii amped up its level of play and pushed Oregon to its first five-set match of the season Friday evening.

Six Ducks recorded seven, or more, kills, while three players finished in the double-digits. Senior setter August Raskie earned 50 assists, 16 digs and seven kills for her team-leading fourth double-double.

Lindsey Vander Weide recorded her third double-double of 14 kills and 12 digs and Ronika Stone recorded her

first with 11 kills and 10 blocks.

Going into the match’s intermission, Oregon had looked ready to pull away with another sweep after taking sets one (25-23) and two (25-10).

However, Hawaii recharged during the break and challenged Oregon in the third set. After the Ducks dropped a lead of 11-9, the Rainbow Wahine took a hold of the lead at 22-21 and never let go. Hawaii took the third set, 25-22, preventing an Oregon double-sweep.

Oregon claimed a four-point lead at 11-7 to begin the fourth set, but three straight from Hawaii quickly switched the lead to the Rainbow Wahine. After three-straight kills from Lindsey Vander Weide and one from Ronika Stone, Oregon reached the 20-point mark first. e Ducks did not remain on top for long as a 3-0 Hawaii run pushed the team to claim the fourth, 25-23, and even the match score, pushing a fifth set.

With the match victory on the line,

Oregon regrouped in the fifth set.

Four kills from Vander Weide, helped Oregon led for a quick moment at 6-4, before Hawaii tied the set at seven. But even with back-to-back kills, the Rainbow Wahine were unable to secure momentum, losing the set, 15-12, and dropping the match, 3-2.

Oregon pushed its defense to a season-high 18 blocks, led by 10 from Stone which tied her career-high.

On ursday in front of an audience of 5,288 people, the Ducks took down Hawaii in three straight sets, beginning with a first-set win of 25-18. Vander Weide and Stone were key to Oregon’s success as Vander Weide led the team with a seasonhigh 15 kills and Stone followed with 12 throughout the match. Raskie also ended ursday’s match with 39 assists and four kills.

Hawaii put pressure on Oregon in the second set. Beginning with a 7-1 lead, the Rainbow Wahine broke a 12-

12 tie with seven unanswered points to lead 19-12 and forced Oregon to burn through both of its timeouts.

With back-to-back kills from Vander Weide, Oregon resurged for a 7-0 run to steal the win from Hawaii, 25-23.

In the final set, Vander Weide once again sparked an Oregon surge — this time after breaking a 14-14 tie. e Ducks went through two, 3-0 runs to lead 21-17 before Hawaii attempted a comeback, only to get within two of Oregon. A kill from Stone gave the Ducks the set and match win, earning Oregon’s fifth sweep of the season. ursday’s defense was led by freshmen Brooke Nuneviller and Camryn Tastad. Both earned doubledigit digs, with Nuneviller leading the team with 14 and Tastad with 10.

Ending non-conference matches on a 7-3 record, Oregon will open Pac-12 play next weekend. e Ducks will host both Oregon State ( ursday at 6 p.m.) and Washington State (Sunday at noon) at Matthew Knight Arena.

She swung in a cross toward forward Zoe Hasenauer. e ball dropped at the top of Idaho’s 18-yard box, as Vandal goalie Makayla Presgrave dove for the save against Hasenauer. But Presgrave couldn’t collect it and the loose ball quickly found the feet of a sprinting Oregon senior forward Marissa Everett.

Everett poked the ball in goal, earning her second goal of the game, her fifth of the year and her third of the weekend for the Ducks.

Everett’s two goals propelled Oregon to a 2-0 victory over the Idaho Vandals Sunday afternoon, capping the Ducks’ nonconference schedule on a four-game winning streak.

“I’m absolutely pleased,” Oregon head coach Kat Mertz said. “For us to pounce on Idaho early, I was really happy about that. [I] would have liked to have seen one more to kind of sealed the deal, but with two goals, I’m really happy for Marissa Everett to get a brace.”

Just one goal shy of a hat trick, Everett’s 35thminute goal moved her up a spot to No. 6 on the program’s all-time shot list. Everett passes Oregon soccer alumna Sierra Marsh (122 shots, 1996-1999) with 124 shots.

“It feels great, but I know the season is not over yet,” Everett said. “So, I just got to continue to stay hungry and keep attacking and keep pushing my teammates to also get some goals and some assists.”

With zero shots on goal from the Vandals (3-5-1), the Ducks held Idaho to just one shot the whole game. Oregon’s win keeps the team undefeated with a five-game homestand-winning streak at Pape’ field going into the start of conference play next week.

Riding high after defeating Portland on Friday, Oregon’s offense looked strong, keeping the ball up on Idaho’s defense for the majority of the game. e Vandals struggled to get out of danger with Presgrave, the team’s first-half goalie, saving only five of Oregon’s seven shots on goal.

“Idaho, they’re good,” said Mertz. “ ey’re good

at services in the box and we knew that so, we wanted to deny their corner kick opportunities.

And the best way to defend a team like that is to keep the ball.”

Oregon shot double-digits in both halves, ending the game with 21 total shots — a teamleading five from Everett.

“I think any time you got a goal scored in the box, they’re going to take advantage of it,” Idaho head coach Jeremy Clevenger said. “I think we let her [Everett] off the hook a little bit without marking the box and that’s on us, but good players always find a way to score.”

Everett led the Ducks with three shots on goal and her two goals, her first in the 11th minute, ties her with junior forward Emma Eddy for the teamlead (five goals).

“We’re really confident,” Everett said. “We had a good preseason and it’s good to build up confidence before we head into season, but we know Pac-12 is a whole other beast of its own.” e Ducks will open the Pac-12 by hosting the Utah Utes, Friday at 7 p.m. back at Papé Field.
