• Log in to Handshake, upload your résumé to connect with employers in advance, and polish your profile. If you make your profile public, employers will be able to access your résumé in advance. • Make an appointment with a career advisor on Handshake or come to our drop-in hours to review your résumé, discuss techniques for optimizing your time at the fair, and determine what opportunities will develop you and your career. • Research the companies you are interested in. Reflect on your own interests and compare what the company can offer you and what you can offer the company. • Print out copies of your résumé and business cards to share with employers you want to develop a relationship with (and potentially work for). • Set a goal for yourself. Whether it be chatting with at least one employer while at the fair or using the fair to set up an informational interview in the future, having a goal will help you stay focused.
AT THE FAIR • Take a deep breath. Believe in yourself and project confidence. • Talk with Career Center staff. We are eager to answer questions, provide tips for engaging with employers, and give you a pep talk. We can also help you go through the list of employers to select which ones are most likely to have what you are looking for. • Walk around the fair for 10–15 minutes to get a feel for it and make a mental note of employers you want to reach out to. Once you’re comfortable, start making connections. • Take action to accomplish the goal you set earlier. Listening and asking thoughtful questions goes a long way in building a relationship with the recruiter and developing rapport. Remember, employers want to hire you, they want to engage with you and talk about the exciting opportunities they have to offer. • Collect contact information from the employers you connect with and share your contact information with them.
AFTER THE FAIR • Follow up with the employers you connected with by sending thank you emails that include at least one takeaway from your conversation that interested, excited, or taught you in some way. Even if you’re not looking for a job or internship opportunity right now, you are building relationships and creating a good impression. • Sign up for practice interviews, and career counseling with the Career Center through Handshake. You can also call the Career Center at 541-346-3235 to make an appointment. • Reach out to employers for coffee or tea and an informational interview. This might look like 15 minutes to an hour depending on their schedule. Ask for advice and be sincere.

MAKE THE MOST OF THE FAIR
FIVE TIPS TO PREPARE YOU FOR INTERVIEW SUCCESS 1. Sign up for a practice interview. You can sign up on Handshake or contact Tina Haynes, On-Campus Recruiting Coordinator, by phone at 541-346-6006 or via email at thaynes@uoregon.edu. Remember Fair Interview Day is Thursday, April 18.
2.
Dress to impress and consider the company’s culture. Research the company’s social media page to see what employees actually wear. If this is a corporate culture, go business professional. If this is a more down-to-earth culture, then pick something polished, clean and business casual. Think about the company you are interviewing for when you are picking out your outfit. We recommend considering what an employee at that organization would wear and dressing one step up from that.
3.
Prepare at least three questions to ask the recruiter at the end of the interview. Recruiters will always ask you at the end of an interview “Do you have any questions for me?” Not having any questions is seen as a serious red flag to employers and hurts your chances of being offered the position. Preparing questions shows that you have a real interest in the position and will also give you information to determine if the position is right for you. For example, you can ask: • If I were in a review a year from now, how would you know I was successful in this role? • Where do you see the company changing in the next few years? How does this role contribute to those changes? • Is there anything that concerns you about my background or the answers I gave for this role? (This one is particularly great because it gives you a chance to address any issues)
4.
Ask about the next steps in the process. This way you can follow up with them according to their timeline if you do not hear back from them.
5. MYTH The Career Fair only has sales jobs or positions for business majors.
TRUTH Many companies offer a multitude of opportunities besides the ones they have posted on Handshake. For example, at this year’s fair KDRV-TV is looking to hire a news photographer and editor, Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare is hiring a skills trainer, and the City of Eugene is hiring an environmental project manager. Don’t be afraid to ask the employer if they have opportunities in your field of interest.

Follow up! Send a thank you email within 24 hours after your interview. Be sure to thank your recruiter for their time and always follow up with a thank you email. If possible, sending a thank you card is also a way to impress your recruiter and show them how thoughtful you are. Make sure to mention at least one thing you talked about during the interview that made you really excited about the position.
MANAGING MULTIPLE JOB OFFERS “Declining an offer gracefully can make a world of difference to your reputation and can improve your network. On the other hand, turning down a job offer in a disrespectful or unprofessional manner can do serious harm to both.” Commongood Careers Blog • When juggling multiple offers, lean on the side of honesty and open communication. • Make sure you have the written offer in your hands before negotiating. • Gracefully decline the positions you choose not to accept in a timely manner so the employer can move on to the next candidate. This can be as simple as stating that after careful consideration you’ve decided the position is not the right fit for you at this time. • Respect the employer’s time and effort. When all is said and done be sure to genuinely thank each employer who offered you a position. Maintaining these relationships is an important part of the process.
SEE WHO’S INTERVIEWING AFTER THE FAIR
Navigating the Fair as an Introvert Introverts often feel that social interactions deplete their energy. As an introvert, it’s helpful to navigate the Career Fair strategically in order to preserve your energy and accomplish your goals. Take your time and follow these tips to make the most of the fair.
Plan out the employers you want to visit in advance. This is particularly important for introverts so you don’t exhaust yourself speaking to companies that are not aligned with your values and interests. This may mean going over the list with a career advisor, researching in advance, or even sitting outside the fair and highlighting the ones that interest you most before you enter the fair.
Walk through the fair and plan the order you want to talk to employers. The trick to this tip is to give yourself time to feel comfortable at the fair. Don’t talk to any of the employers on your first walkthrough. Instead watch and observe, figure out your plan of action, then sit down and review your questions before engaging with the first employer you plan to speak to.
Create a list of three to five questions you can ask employers. These can be generic or more specific to the company depending on the time you allow for pre-fair prep. Some great questions to ask are: a. What can you tell me about your company culture? b. What are the biggest challenges a new hire encounters when starting with your company? c. What qualities enable someone to be successful at this company? Are there specific skills or traits you are looking for when hiring? d. What made you choose this company? e. What has your company accomplished that makes you proud to be with them?
Don’t forget to collect the contact information of the employers you plan to talk to.
Thursday, April 18 A handful of employers attending the fair will be screening candidates and extending invitations to interview the next day, Thursday, April 18 (some later). Here’s a partial list of those planning to interview. • • • • • • •
