NEWS COLLEGE DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS SQUARE-OFF ON DEBATE NIGHT

BY ANAKIN WELP • TWITTER @ANAKINWELP e University of Oregon’s College Democrats and College Republicans clubs went toe-to-toe in a debate Wednesday night that remained civil, but at times heated. e four-person teams discussed four topics for the night: the Green New Deal, campus carry, free college and border security.

Daniel Tichenor, a political science professor and the director of the Democratic Engagement and Governance program, moderated the debate. He said that the sides had two minutes for opening statements before space for rebuttals. Audience members were provided cards to ask questions with at the end.

“We’re really hoping to keep this a very civil space tonight,” Daniel Paulsen, introducing the College Democrats, told the audience. “We really want to engage in good conversations with each other, and that is with help from all of you.”

Quinn Milionis, president of the College Republicans, spoke of the importance of debate discourse.

“I’m really glad people are interested in this kind of thing. If you engage with people on the other side, either your own opinion will get strengthened, or it will get changed for the better,” Milionis addressed the attendees.

On the Green New Deal, the first topic of the night, Democrats and Republicans disagreed on the effectiveness and economic cost of implementing the plan. “ is is our nation’s greatest threat,” said Brian Josephson of the Democrats in support of the proposal.

Michael Kraan of the Republicans argued that the Green New Deal ignored nuclear power as a viable option. “I’d like to emphasize that the position of the College Republicans is not that we shouldn’t do anything about [climate change], but that we need to do the right thing,” Kraan said.

“Nuclear energy remains the most efficient and safest way to get clean energy. France gets 70 percent of its energy from nuclear, and it’s the greenest country on the planet.”

energy from nuclear power, it is aiming to reduce that reliance, according to a Reuters report. France is the world’s second-greenest country behind Switzerland, based on 2018 Environmental Performance Index numbers.

Both teams agreed that education is important, but while the Democrats argued for more accessibility via government subsidization of higher education, the Republicans said that college degrees have lost value, and that opportunities are available that do not require university degrees. e topic of campus carry relates to UO’s policy of prohibiting faculty, staff and students from possessing firearms on university property regardless of concealed carry, though an appellate court ruling declares state universities cannot prohibit firearms on campus.

Justus Armstrong of the Republicans said the club supported carrying on campus as a way to provide protection for civilians in dangerous situations when law enforcement may be unavailable and as a deterrent to crime.

“Campus carry won’t do anything to enhance safety on our campus,” Shreya Nathan of the Democrats responded. “ e vast majority of individuals over the legal age can obtain a license to carry in a few days, and in that time, they’ve probably not adequately prepared to have a wild west shootout.” According to ORS 166.292, concealed carry permits in Oregon are issued by county sheriffs, who can issue a license within 45 days of the application, provided the application is approved.

Nathan also said that gun violence disproportionately affects people of color.

A May 2018 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine and conducted between 2008 and 2016 found that black men in the United States were 14 times more likely than white men to die in firearm homicides. e issue of border security drew more heated discourse, as both teams accused their opponents of lying. administration’s proposed border wall after criticism of the concept by the Democrats.

“If you want to say that a wall or any kind of physical barrier does not work in reducing illegal immigration, you are vastly mistaken,” Christensen said. “Israel has had a wall around all its borders for years, and they have had single digit illegal immigration numbers.” is claim echoes a similar one President Trump has made. An analysis by the Washington Post suggests that while Israel has experienced low levels of unauthorized immigration, Israel’s immigration policies may be more responsible than the border wall.

Christensen also characterized the southern U.S. border as “extremely dangerous,” claiming that 22 million undocumented immigrants were in the U.S., and 11 million had criminal records, based off a Yale-MIT study that has been criticized as flawed.

Democrat Tristan Waits pushed back saying such statements were detrimental to understanding of the situation, and argued that the number of undocumented immigrants present in the country was closer to 10.7 million, according to Pew Research Center. “ is constant rhetoric that there’s some sort of crisis at the border, to constantly scare people to running to the polls and the right, is a harmful rhetoric,” Waits said.

Population estimates released by the Department of Homeland Security in December 2018 put the number of undocumented persons in the country in 2015 at around 12 million. e Migration Policy Institute estimated around 11.3 million undocumented immigrants resided in the country, based off U.S. Census date from 2012 to 2016.

In the end, both sides seemed to recognized the importance of the discourse.

“I think the free exchange of ideas is really important,” Josephson said, addressing the audience. “When we talk about what makes college education important, it’s that we get to sit in a room where people don’t agree with you, and say these things, and have this debate.”

GETS HIS HEARTBROKEN ON THE EMOTIONAL ‘IGOR’

Nic’s take:

On the final track of his most recent album, “IGOR,” Tyler, e Creator poses a question: “Are we still friends? Can we be friends?”

Built upon a beautiful Al Green sample, the song “ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?” is a perfect summation of the awkward and vulnerable aspects of love. More specifically, it’s a failed and complicated type of love — an experience that Tyler, e Creator seems all too familiar with at this point.

Over the course of “IGOR’s” 40-minute runtime, the LA-based rapper and producer chronicles the highs and lows of a romantic relationship, all with a close attention to detail and a knack for vibrant beats.

It’s essentially a concept album, or at least it progresses in a linear fashion. Tyler’s musical protagonist falls in love near the beginning of the album on “I THINK.” Just a few songs later, he sees that same love slip away on “GONE, GONE / THANK YOU.” He drew on a similar theme for 2017’s acclaimed “Flower Boy,” an album that acted as both a critical high point and a testament to Tyler’s lasting talent and vision. Crafting a colorful hip-hop landscape, he contrasted lyrical themes of loneliness and longing with bright rays of analog sunshine.

On this new album, however, Tyler does away with the sun-soaked beauty and instead dips all of his emotions into a thick, murky sludge. e finished product comes out wet and dripping. But “IGOR” relishes in its own grime, so much so that it becomes its own strength.

On the opening track, “IGOR’S THEME,” the dirtiest synth bass imaginable holds out for a good 20 seconds before any other instrument kicks in. e song’s lyrics, sung by an uncredited Kali Uchis and Lil Uzi Vert, speak to the nature of the Tyler, the Creator’s 2019 release, “IGOR,” runs 40 minutes and tells an emotional story. album, caught halfway between the emotional and the visceral: “ ey gon’ feel this one.”

Later on, Tyler packs a punch on “WHAT’S GOOD,” the most confrontational track on the album. Here, he is most confident, referencing his own shoe brand and rapping about how it’s “hard to believe in God when there ain’t no mirrors around.”

But on “EARFQUAKE” he is more sentimental, allowing for one of the most danceable tracks on the entire record.

As usual, Tyler mines from a deep well of influences; however, he often bends his source material to fit into his own, unique aesthetic. When sampling artists from the ‘70s and ‘80s, he reaches for the crackliest records available. Even a guest appearance from Kanye West on “PUPPET” comes through warped and almost unnoticed.

Even Tyler, as a character, feels less present on this record. In a 2017 interview, following the release of “Flower Boy,” he said he “wanted to produce and just have people sing.”

He continues with that concept on this album, clearing room for a titular alter ego, who is just as flawed and hurt as his creator.

But similar to Kafka with his creation of Gregor Samsa in “ e Metamorphosis,” Tyler is able to achieve a more authentic portrayal, despite the layer of distance between protagonist and author.

“Igor” functions well as a complete package. As Tyler himself stated in a note following the release of his new album: “I believe the first listen works best all the way through, no skips … full attn [sic] towards the sounds where you can form your own opinions and feelings towards the album.”

Coming from the artist, this is a little pretentious. But with “IGOR,” in addition to an extremely fruitful career thus far, Tyler, e Creator has earned it.

Jordan’s take:

After over a decade of cockroach snacking and minutaur rapping, the wry, L.A.-based rapper/producer Tyler, the Creator has taken on many monikers, using them to magnify aspects of his Rubik’s Cube-like persona. ere was the menacing Wolf Haley, Ace the Creator, the violent Tron Cat, the introverted Sam and, later, the shimmering Flower Boy. He often delves into these aspects of himself to inspire his next work. He gets fixated on these characters, usually resulting in an immersive soundtrack.

His newest identity and subsequent record, “IGOR,” presents Tyler seemingly at odds with himself. Having grown out of the edgy and angsty throws of his earlier work, his recent repertoire has lamented on his romantic relationships. “IGOR” is more of that, but while “Flower Boy” painted beautiful portraits with soothing synth play, “IGOR” is a stark juxtaposition. His tone is fraught with guilt and, in comparison, it’s as much of a deformity as its title suggests.

It seems that Tyler’s long, winding pursuit of N.E.R.D.-inspired dittys has been fully met and

laid to rest with “Flower Boy.” Now, that style is becoming more of a color on his palate as opposed to the canvas itself. “IGOR” flirts with hip-hop (It even features a handful of samples, which is a hip-hop practice Tyler didn’t partake in for awhile); it’s a stirring mix of grimey and pretty and, at times, it eats at a similar kind of pop Animal Collective was in the late 2000s.

“IGOR” is inflated with low-frequency, finely distorted synths and foundational chord progressions that work as healthy bones for Tyler’s fleshy raps and whimpers. Yet, like with other “Igors” of the past, it’s body is lumpy and disfigured. Beat switches are commonplace, especially in hip hop, but “IGOR” employs them as a rejection of traditional song structures, not to say they’re without substance. Tracks change and end unexpectedly; “I THINK” switches between club-focused rhythms and whirling jazz keyboard riffs; “PUPPET,” featuring Kanye West, throws its well-crafted momentum away near the end in exchange for a detached choir and siren synth; “EARFQUAKE,” a standout track featuring a steady verse from Cardi B, ends mid-wail.

Tyler’s stuck on love again, but along with the pitfalls that come with that, an underlying narrative of self-forgiveness and self-acceptance is embedded throughout as he comes to terms with his ambiguous sexuality and the end of a relationship. “WHAT’S GOOD” puts it as nonchalant as “Dracula, Dracula, Dracula / Suck me first, I might get back at ya,” but other times it weighs as heavy as the spoken word sample at the end, “I don’t know what’s harder: letting go or just being okay with it.”

As the album rounds out, so does Tyler’s relationship with an individual who is implied to be closeted, and closure sets in.

Not just pertaining to the relationship (“ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?”), but pertaining to himself and who he is: “You never lived in your truth, I’m just happy I lived in it / But I finally found peace, so peace,” he raps on “GONE, GONE / THANK YOU.” “IGOR” is the process of figuring yourself out, which is never a smooth experience. It’s bumpy and changing and unexpected, but most of all, like with Tyler’s latest record, it’s freeing.

VIKING BRAGGOT OFFERS A

COOL ATMOSPHERE AND UNIQUE TAKE ON BEER

Big wooden barrels fashioned into a sort of Viking chandelier hang from the ceiling. Long community tables span across the restaurant like a Viking’s dream mess hall. Tall windows that spread across two sides of the building let in whatever light is available on a typical Eugene day.

Viking Braggot Company is not only a brewery in Eugene but also a love letter to their namesake, viking history and a hearty alcoholic brew. e brewery had its grand opening on Aug. 11 for its Southtowne location on Willamette Street, but has had a tap room on Commercial Street open since June 2013. Viking Braggot’s Southtowne Location serves pizza, burgers, sandwiches, salads and snacks to go along with their house brewed braggot.

Braggot is a blend of both mead and beer. Mead is a wine made of honey that was too expensive a little over 1,000 years ago so these Vikings decided to mix it with the cheaper beer. e braggot takes more of its notes from beer but still has subtle hints of local Oregon honey to sweeten the beverage. Viking Braggot offers many different iterations of their braggot from the hoppier IPA to a traditional, more roasted, coffee-tasting beer.

Viking Braggot also offers a large selection of food at their Southtowne location. e best selection on the menu goes to the pizza options. Chefs at Viking Braggot use their braggot to add a little taste to the crust of their pies. ey also offer their pizza at the Viking Braggot tasting room, which comes in the form of a food truck that they call Pillage Pizza. e menu features an eclectic collection of different pizza options like the Wessex — a pie that combines caramelized onions, big blobs of ricotta, sausage and arugula with a base of mozzarella and tomato sauce. e Norfolk pairs more traditional toppings with pepperoni, green pepper, onion and black olive. e crust of the pizza is by far the highlight of the otherwise average menu. It remains chewy with a little crunch and comes through with some interesting sweet and hearty tastes from the braggot.

However, the pizza begins to fall apart without the help of the tasty crust. e tomato sauce is lacking the tartness and sweetness that usually accompanies a good pizza base. Without the strong tastes at the center of the pizza, the Wessex’s caramelized onions and ricotta also disappear as they are traditionally weaker toppings. e Norfolk may be a better pairing for the delicious crust by covering the more mild tomato sauce with spicy pepperoni and a good helping of veggies. e other main item on the menu is Viking Braggot’s burger. eir burgers come in a few forms: the pub burger, the bacon & swiss burger and the berserker burger. e bacon & swiss burger combines, yes, bacon and swiss, but also adds caramelized onions and tomato to round it out. e

burger itself came out a little overdone with no pink visible in the middle and an overpowering taste of pepper and not much else. e bacon topping the burger was flimsy and rubbery and didn’t add great texture or taste. Still, the thick-cut steak fries on the side were worthy of snacking on.

Viking Braggot creates a cool atmosphere with a

niche beer offering that captures the essence of Eugene’s eclectic beer scene. While the burger isn’t something to call home about, the pizza will do well with a brew. And in an effort to encourage more students to stop by, the owners added in some wellplaced power outlets to make getting work done and drinking braggot a perfect afternoon.

NEW RESEARCH REVE THE PIONEER STATUE’S CONTROV

BY HANNAH KANIK • TWITTER @HANNAH_KANIK Every day, thousands of University of Oregon students pass the Pioneer statue on their way to class. e pioneer stands among the students between Fenton and Friendly halls, carrying a whip in one hand and a rifle slung over its shoulder.

As the statue’s 100-year anniversary approaches, the history surrounding the statue has sparked conversations — and a possible protest — on campus and in the community. e statue was vandalized last month with red paint sprayed onto its crotch and whip in its right hand and googly eyes were placed over the statue’s eyes. Following this vandalism, members of the community reached out to the Emerald with information about its history and a rumoured protest.

department said a protest was in the works but could not offer any other information at this time.

Ryan Reed, a member of NASU, said the statue has made him uncomfortable since his first weeks on campus.

“A lot of people think a pioneer is a frontiersman — an explorer. For us, it’s a totally different definition,” Reed said. “ at feeling comes from what he’s carrying on his shoulder and what he’s carrying on his belt.”

Recent research from UO history doctoral candidate Marc Carpenter outlines the controversial history and context surrounding the statue. e Hidden History project from UO history professors Jennifer O’Neal and Kevin Hatfield highlights these topics as well.

Concurrently, there is a committee on campus, tasked by UO President

Michael Schill, that is working to make recommendations to balance the representation of history on campus to include people of diverse backgrounds.

Reed said the Pioneer statue might not bother every student at UO, but it negatively impacts the way Native students feel on campus.

“It’s like a murderer being praised for what they did. I guarantee that if you got [Ted] Bundy’s statue up on campus, people are going to go hectic,” Reed said. “But they don’t think of that with the pioneer statue.

It’s been so romanticized and whitewashed that a pioneer is a thing that is supposed to be positive.”

The statue’s history UO professors O’Neal and Hatfield developed the “Untold Stories”

project in 2013 within a Freshman Interest Group to create the Hidden History website that highlights the untold histories of traditionally underrepresented groups on campus.

According to the Hidden History entry on the Pioneer statue, in the early 20th century, pioneers were depicted in statues across the country to “valorize” their achievements.

On the day of the statue’s instillation, May 22, 1919, the president of the Oregon Historical Society gave a speech to dedicate the statue that praised the Anglo-Saxon race and its ability to assimilate other races and cultures to become a part of it, according to the Hidden History website.

“Many of the words that were used at that speech, at the dedication, [are] very problematic,” O’Neal said. “You see the statue on campus, but there’s

EALS VERSIAL HISTORY no interpretive information there. We wanted to provide [the Hidden Histories] page so that there’s more background.”

O’Neal said information on this topic is relatively hard to find because it’s typically found in primary sources like letters and news articles. Making this information accessible to students and community members was one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Hidden Histories website, O’Neal said.

Carpenter received a grant from the Oregon Heritage Foundation last December to look into the statue’s history. He went through thousands of pages of archival material — some of which had never been used in historical research before. “ e goal of my research is to get a well researched basis to start having this conversation,” Carpenter said. “ e end message has ended up being, based on what I’ve found, that when Native students today look at that statue and see violent colonialism, they are seeing what was intended.”

Carpenter presented his findings at a pub talk last week at the Hop Valley Brewing Company to a group of 50 students, faculty and members of the community.

“I think students should care about what their university represents. I think the vast majority of the University of Oregon students would rather not have a statue celebrating white supremacist nationalist violence,” Carpenter said. “I think part of the college education is learning how to be good citizens and good people, and this can be part of that.”

After diving into the biographies of the man who created the statue and the man who commissioned it, Carpenter said he discovered noticeable themes of white nationalism tied to the statue. e sculptor Alexander Phimister Proctor created several other monuments during this time period, including a statue of Robert E. Lee that was removed from its pedestal in 2017 because of its white supremacist ties, according to Dallas Morning News. e man who commissioned the pioneer statue, a Portland attorney named Joseph Nathan Teal, paid $10,000 to have the statue built — equivalent to $300,000 today. Teal was tied to other problematic statues in Oregon, such as the Coming of the White Man in Portland, Carpenter said.

“A monument is a celebration.

Monuments innately celebrate that which they depict. So, to me, it feels very similar to the confederate monuments that speckled a large part of the rest of the country,” Carpenter

said. “It’s a monument to violence and white supremacy, and I don’t think those are values that we want to have as a community.”

Committee on understanding our diverse histories Last year, a resolution passed through the university senate that created a task force to address controversial monuments and artwork on campus and recommend new monuments that recognize people of diverse backgrounds with contributions to campus: the committee on recognizing our diverse histories.

Adriene Lim, the dean of libraries and co-chair of the committee, said the president tasked the committee with examining campus and giving recommendations on how to balance our representation of history.

“In our society, broadly, there are some voices and some histories that have not been represented well,” Lim said. “ ey’re either missing from the narrative or they are disregarded in the narrative. So, we are doing that work.” e committee is creating an inventory of controversial monuments on campus, such as the Pioneer statue, as well as recommendations for new monuments to celebrate underrepresented history. ey will send in these recommendations to President Schill sometime before the end of fall term in 2019.

“I think it’s good for when we want to make sure that our community members feel like they belong. If they are not represented in their surroundings, then do they feel less welcome and less like they are a member of the community?” Lim said.

Ryan Reed, member of NASU at UO, said some students on campus might not be aware of the history of the land they live on, or don’t experience the statue’s presence on campus in the same way. “ ey don’t know what we feel. ey don’t know what we go through or the types of stuff that our ancestors went through,” Reed said. “ ey don’t know the sense of uncomfortability that you get when you walk by [the statue] or walk around it or know that it’s on campus in the same area as you are.”

Carpenter said the research done on the statues history adds weight to Native students’ interpretations of the white nationalism tied to the statue. “ e research kind of gives teeth to show that their interpretation of [the statue] isn’t a projection — that their interpretation of it is backed by the historical record,” Carpenter said.

At a grief support retreat, Jen befriends another woman named Judy, played by Linda Cardellini, who seems to be hiding a mysterious secret. roughout the first season, Jen works through her grief with her sons while also trying to avenge her husband’s murder, ultimately getting herself into some tricky situations. e show offers a serious yet humorous portrayal of a dark situation you don’t see in a comedic light very often. e show has one season out right now, complete with 10 episodes. TAKING LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

BY LIZZY PALMQUIST As a college student with a full schedule, it can be easy to fall into the same patterns when it comes to free time. Go home. Do homework. Scroll through Instagram. Watch Netflix. Eat Ramen. Sleep. Repeat.

While we all need this kind of downtime once in a while, it can be easy to become stuck in this mindless cycle of activities that makes working up the energy to go back to class that much harder. School suddenly becomes the central focus of life, and while that can be a good mindset to have, it needs to be balanced out with activities that stimulate cognition in the brain.

One of the best ways to do that is by making an effort to learn outside the classroom.

In a study titled “ e Synapse Project,” it was found that participants who learned new hobbies like photography or quilting were able to enhance their cognitive ability. According to the study’s findings, “sustained engagement in cognitively demanding, novel activities enhances memory function in older adulthood.” While this study was conducted among older adults, the benefits of its findings can still be applied to younger individuals. According to Harvard Health Publishing, “any mentally stimulating

activity” helps in “developing neurological plasticity” in the brain, which improves its ability to take in new information.

One thing students can do to actively learn outside the classroom is replace scrolling through social media between classes with reading a book they find interesting. While looking at social media requires little brain activity, reading interacts with the language regions of the brain, as well as the sensory cortex. When reading words related to scents or textures, the sensory cortex is activated and helps promote the immersion of readers into the story, explaining why “the experience of reading can feel so alive.” Books of any genre can open up the minds of students to learning about subjects they are interested in.

While reading can be done in shorter spans of time, there are more long-term activities that students can engage in on campus that promote outside-of-class learning. For example, e Craft Center offers a wide selection of workshops each term that students can enroll in to learn a variety of skills. Woodworking, sculpture, ceramics, glassblowing and painting are

just some of the workshops that are offered. e best time to register is within the first three weeks of the term because more spots are likely to be available.

To engage both the mind and body in outside-ofclass learning, the Group X classes at the Rec Center provide such opportunities to students. Like e Craft Center, classes change each term. ey each cost $8, but there is also the option of getting an unlimited pass for the term for only $35. Classes taught include dancing, cycling, Zumba, strength training, yoga and more. With duration times from 45 minutes to an hour, classes will not take too much time out of a student’s schedule while still providing a chance to learn new physical skills.

Trying to allot time for learning outside the classroom may seem to be a stress on a schedule, but it is a stress necessary to improve cognitive health.

Whether it is by reading a book, learning to paint or taking Zumba lessons, students deserve the chance to participate in activities they care about. e things they learn might not help them get a degree, but they will teach them about the things they are good at that one cannot assign a grade to.

JAMES CHARLES’ BACKLASH

SHOULD BE A STANDARD HELD FOR EVERYONE

How does one lose over a million YouTube subscribers in under 24 hours? As someone who only has around five subscribers, it’s impossible for me to answer that question, but luckily we can learn the answer from YouTuber James Charles.

For those who have no idea who James Charles is, he is a 19-year-old YouTube beauty vlogger and influencer. In his short 19 years, James managed to accrue a following of over 16 million people on YouTube and he was the first male ambassador for Covergirl. Now only 13 million strong, James Charles’ fanbase is in shambles trying to cope with his cancelation. What caused this cancelation you ask: a video from another beauty vlogger named Tati Westbrook, in which she called out James for being a bad friend as well as exhibiting predatory behavior.

In order to understand how James was a bad friend to Tati, you have to know that Tati and her husband were quite instrumental in James’ rise to fame. In Tati’s video where she exposes James, titled “BYE SISTER,” in reference to James’ fans being called sister, she explains how much she and her husband did for James. rough financial advice, collaborations and more, Tati Westbrook undoubtedly played a big role in getting James to where he is. at history is important for seeing why Tati was so upset when James promoted a skin and hair care brand that is in direct competition to hers. Sugarbearhair is the brand that James promoted over Tati’s personal brand, Halo Beauty. James promoted Sugarbearhair on instagram live that he streamed from Coachella, saying that he loved their products and the company had helped provide him security when it was needed.

So was this betrayal of trust enough to cancel James? Certainly not — he was quick to post an apology and do his best to explain the situation, but those gummy bears were the least of his problems.

In that same video, Tati Westbrook also brought up James’ predatory behavior, specifically toward straight men. Tati said that she was made uncomfortable by comments James made when eating dinner at her house, and also referenced that he had harassed straight men. After the video, multiple men came forward to say that they too had been DM’ed by James without warning.

A Buzzfeed article posted recently contains many screenshots of private messages between James and a number of semi-famous men. All of the messages show James being a bit forward, and at times coercive, telling these men how attractive they are. In one very blurry screenshot, James is messaging a 19-year-old waiter who he apparently kissed. e waiter’s name is Sam and he made it

clear that he is not gay, yet in the messages you can see James sending him: “You’re not straight no matter how many times you tell yourself and I hope you figure that out sooner rather than later.”

James’ messages are alarming, and they are supported by some behavior in real life. Another YouTuber and pseudo-celebrity named Gage Gomez who attended Coachella with James said that he was being pressured heavily by James to “experiment” despite Gomez’s insistence that he is straight.

James’ behavior is clearly reprehensible, and the blowback from his fans is understandable, but I have a different perspective. I have no differing opinion on his shady business practices and bad friendship, but I see his harassing of straight men as unexceptional if anything. ere are no reports of James physically harassing men, and a majority of the reports come from private messages individuals were sent by him. e practice of DMing someone you find attractive and being forward about that fact is not unique to James. In fact, I would say that straight men have a much worse and more prolific track record in that practice.

I am willing to bet almost every woman reading this article has been the recipient of unwanted private messages from men. Hip-hop celebrities are especially notorious for scoping out attractive

women on social media and using their position of power to take advantage of them. In another article I wrote, I investigated a serial rapist named Ian Connor who does exactly what James does, except he flew girls to him and subsequently has sex with them whether they want to or not.

I would like to ask all of the James Charles cancelers to hold other celebrities to the same standards. Almost every famous musician has private-messaged a regular person who they find attractive. So much so in fact that there are a number of tabloid articles that count down the many times celebrities slid into fan DM’s. I’m not here to advocate for the normalization of these kinds of actions, but rather that James’ behavior is neither unique nor the worst we have seen, and yet broke records for the number of subscribers lost in 24 hours. It is also important to remember that James is still 19. It is weird to think that he is younger than I am yet has already had a full rise to fame and subsequent fall. e story of a child star making life-altering mistakes is as old as time itself, and James honestly has not done anything that bad. I cannot speak for the victims of James’ harassment, and I cannot speak for the friends whom he betrayed. What I can do though is remind everyone of how important context is, and ask that we look at celebrity culture itself, and apply the same standards to everyone.

SPORTS OREGON’S BULLPEN TRYING TO FIND CONSISTENCY

Oregon baseball’s bullpen looked done and dusted after the Ducks went down to Tucson, Arizona, for a three-game series against the Arizona Wildcats. After surrendering 54 runs in three games, including a 28-run nightmare in the final game of that series, the bullpen has been trying to find consistency.

But head coach George Horton always has faith in his ballclub to find the light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how bad a loss. “ ey’re competitive. Any time you get beat up like that you tend to lose your confidence,” Horton said. “It’s critical to toe the mound and have some confidence and not try to be too careful.”

Ultimately it is on Horton to get his pitchers ready for games, and he admits to not preparing his team well enough for the Arizona series. But at the same time, pitchers need to be able to throw consistent strikes.

During their 11 most recent games, Oregon pitchers have walked 62 batters. For context, Oregon State in the same amount of games, has walked 34 batters. e Ducks lead the Pac-12 conference in walks allowed, with 281. But they are fifth in the conference in strikeouts, with 433 heading into a three-game series with USC. While not a pitcher, first baseman Gabe Matthews, one of the leaders of this Ducks squad, challenged his team to be better after the weekend down in the desert. e Ducks have gone 4-4 overall since the Arizona series and have been more competitive, especially the pitching staff.

“Everyone needs to compete at another level and hopefully we can get there,” Matthews said.

“I think they have what it takes. Once we get to the right spot, we can go on a run and then who knows what may happen.” e message may have been received by the

bullpen. In the five games since the Arizona series, Oregon’s bullpen has given up just five earned runs. e likes of Ryne Nelson, Kolby Somers and Nico Tellache have really stepped up for the Ducks, and if they want to make a late push for the postseason, those three will have to continue to produce.

Nelson, a projected MLB prospect, struggled against Arizona but came back firing against Oregon State. Last Sunday, he pitched six-anda-third innings in relief, while throwing a careerhigh 120 pitches against the Beavers. But he knows putting it all together has been a challenge this season for Oregon and for himself, as he has been plagued by inconsistent outings where he can’t seem to find the strike zone.

“We’ve been working for that all year,” Nelson said. “It’s probably a little later than we would have liked for it to flip over and get rolling, but better late than never.”
