NEWS HOW A STUDENT’S MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS BECAME A VIRAL RUMOR OF A CAMPUS SHOOTING

Amid social media rumors and paranoia that spread across campus over Mother’s Day weekend, a University of Oregon student faced a mental health crisis. Some students shared his Facebook posts that displayed erratic behavior — typical of mental illness — while some warned each other to stay clear of campus.

Students messaged each other to try to garner more information: Was it true? Was someone planning a shooting on campus?

Hannah Schechtel, a senior sociology major, saw an Instagram post shared by her sister’s friend on Sunday. e person who posted it claimed to have heard from a friend that the student was planning a shooting for Monday.

“I was a little skeptical because obviously it wasn’t through UO Alerts or anything, so that can always be kind of questionable,” she said. “So we took that into account and waited.”

By Sunday afternoon, a UO Alert said that there was no immediate threat to campus and that the social media rumors were inaccurate.

But by Monday morning, Schechtel had seen the original Facebook posts that caused concern. “ at made me kind of uneasy because putting a name to the person made it a little more real,” she said. at’s when Schechtel decided to reach out to the professors of her two Monday classes, saying she felt unsafe coming to campus and wondering about the consequence of missing class. One never responded, the other simply said, “I am holding class today.”

was no clear answer, and that’s the scary part.”

What actually happened?

Late Monday afternoon, a second UO Alert stated again that there was no threat to campus. In addition, the family released a statement saying their family member was in secure care. e student’s family told the Emerald that he had been showing signs of mental illness several weeks prior. His friends attempted to connect him to resources and got in touch with his family and UOPD several weeks prior. e student’s brother confirmed that he had been making grandiose, illogical plans to end “cancer, Alzheimer’s, crime, sadness, ignorance, money,” as his Facebook post read. e student had planned an event at Rennie’s Landing to tell his friends about his ideas and say goodbye as he arranged to leave UO, with only several weeks until his graduation, and move to a different state to help others in need.

“He’s extraordinarily smart, dean’s list every single semester, straight A’s and A-pluses,” his brother told the Emerald.

“He just wants to save the world,” his father added.

Rennie’s had initially welcomed the student to share his ideas but after hearing that he was in a mental health crisis, no longer allowed him to speak at the bar, according to his brother. e Emerald reached out to Rennie’s, but owner Nic Kephart declined to comment.

Friday night revealed the peak of his mental health crisis largely because he felt his first amendment rights had been violated when he was not allowed to host his event at Rennie’s, his brother said.

Because he was non-combative and not posing a threat to himself or others, UOPD could not legally commit him to the hospital for mental health treatment against his will. UOPD arrested him for disorderly conduct in order to ensure he would be under close watch.

Later, however, he willingly signed paperwork to seek treatment, which kept him in the hospital during the week.

His brother said he felt like UOPD and CAHOOTS did everything they could to help his family member. e officer involved was “in our family’s eyes, a hero, an absolute angel,” the student’s brother said. “We were scared that my brother was going to leave, and we would maybe never see him again.”

Rumors continued to spread on social media, however, even as the student was receiving mental health treatment and UO Alerts attempted to quell the discussion.

“Instead of listening to [the UO Alerts],” his brother said, students “just kept perpetuating this idea that he was going to do something, which was never said [or] written — there was no validity to it whatsoever.”

The social media storm Social media played a major role in the commotion, with students, parents and professors seeing varying posts with different levels of information. Schechtel, the senior who decided not to attend class on Monday, said her mom tried to get in touch with the university to get more information but never heard a concrete answer.

until Sunday afternoon, but rumors and fear had been piling up for almost two days.

Lori Shontz, another SOJC professor who has researched how journalists cover mass shootings, said that she talked with many students who said they didn’t trust the UO Alerts and trusted their friends more. She said she hopes students learn to think critically before they post and share things on social media. “ e question that I teach students to ask all the time is, ‘How do you know that?’” Shontz said. “I think it’s a good question for everyone. When you see something on social media, how do you know that? What makes you think that this is a threat?”

While some students and faculty said they felt like UO Alerts lacked information and clarity, Marcus Langford, associate dean of students, said that in the future, he wants students to trust the university to communicate clearly and quickly while investigating the situation at hand.

“I think that’s what our mechanisms allowed us to do, and I think that’s what we would do again,” he said.

Langford said the university does everything in its power to keep students safe. “Know and trust that the institution really is looking out for you and has your best interest at heart,” he said.

He said that if students see something alarming, they should do something about it. Students can call 9-1-1 in emergency situations or report concerns to the UOPD nonemergency number at 541-346-2919. ey can also visit the dean of students’ website for information on assisting students of concern and getting connected to resources, including trained crisis intervention staff that hosts drop-in hours at the dean of students office every weekday.

ART COMMUNITY CONFLICTED

AS ACTOR WITH NEO-NAZI PAST SILENTLY RETURNS

BY DONNY MORRISON A well-known Eugene actor and musician has begun performing again, after being identified as a neo-Nazi last year by the Rose City Antifa.

A little over a year ago, Executive Director of e Shedd Institute Jim Ralph told Eugene Weekly that the institute of art would be cutting all ties with Evan McCarty to assure safety and inclusivity. McCarty had been revealed as the true identity of Byron De La Vandal — an internet pseudonym McCarty used to spread hate and post original pro-white nationalist music to YouTube and Instagram.

According to Ron Sticka, vice president of e Eugene Gleeman, McCarty joined the all-male choir group last September and has since sung with them at e Shedd on two separate occasions, most recently the Night of Vocal Arts on April 6.

University of Oregon graduate Cassidy Garcia was at e Shedd on April 6, when she recognized McCarty as he performed with e Gleeman.

“I was in disbelief and I was angry,” Garcia said. “It was such a prominent display of white male privilege of e Gleeman to feel comfortable enough to share ranks with a neo-Nazi without a care for the harm that his presence and inclusion could have on their audiences.”

Not everyone says McCarty’s return to the stage is a bad thing. Some say it is an opportunity for McCarty to rehabilitate within the art community.

“He told the group he regrets his poor decisions and is no longer involved in anything to do with the alt-right or white nationalism,” Sticka said. “Evan is sincere and should have a second chance to regain his dignity and self-esteem by further participation with the organization.”

In an interview with the Emerald, McCarty said he’s taken steps to make a genuine change in his life.

“I’m working every single day in order to grow as an individual,” McCarty said. “I would ask for forgiveness and understanding. I would be the first to say that I absolutely regret 100 percent of my previous conduct.”

McCarty was successfully sued this past December with two others for harassing Taylor Dumpson, the first Black woman to become student body president of American University in May 2017. According to the settlement agreement McCarty reached with Dumpson, he agreed to apologize, publicly denounce white supremacy, participate in counseling and to volunteer with local civil rights groups.

McCarty said that he specifically chose to pursue a settlement with Dumpson that would address the underlying bigotry and white nationalism at the center of the harassment. He claims to have sought a way to separate himself from his fellow defendants, one of whom is Andrew Anglin, a publisher with a well-known neo-Nazi website called e Daily Stormer.

“I’ve taken this to heart. I wanted to formally apologize. I want to engage on a personal level and I wanted to also educate myself,” McCarty said. “So I’ve been attending classes, seminars and workshops about the dynamics of racial and cultural diversity and the impact of intolerance and prejudice.”

In addition to formally apologizing to Dumpson, McCarty said he has also been volunteering with Blacks in Government, a nonprofit established in the ’70s to emphasize the need for African-Americans in public office, and working with the First Christian Church to help feed the unhoused. e Emerald was unable to reach Blacks in Government or the First PA G E 4

Ralph says that e Shedd was aware of McCarty performing with e Gleeman for a private event six months ago, as well as the Night of Vocal Arts on April 6. While Ralph maintains that e Shedd no longer has a professional relationship with McCarty, he also applauds e Gleeman’s commitment to helping McCarty gain a new perspective on life.

“We see no issue with such involvement so long as performers and audience members alike treat each other with respect, compassion and sensitivity,” Raph said. “What we can and will continue to do is insist on integrity. at includes expecting people to treat each other, even those with whom we most disagree or who have behaved badly in the past, with grace, compassion and wisdom.”

McCarty says that he’s gone above and beyond the terms of his settlement to formally renounce his past beliefs. However, community members still remain divided on whether McCarty should be allowed to sing and act in town again.

Garcia worked with McCarty at e Shedd as venue assistants in summer 2017. She reports that his cold nature and abruptness often left her feeling uncomfortable. e Emerald spoke with two other people who shared similar experiences as Garcia had with McCarty.

“He acted on his hatred and intentionally brought harm to people whom he deemed unworthy of human rights,” Garcia said. “He should not get to now turn around and take up room in safe community spaces.”

Emelia Reed met McCarty in 2012 while doing theater at South Eugene High School. She describes him as being very involved in music and theater.

“We were in three shows together, and I would see him around school often,” Reed said. “He seemed to just be someone who kept more to themselves when he wasn’t performing.”

Like many others, Reed was surprised when she found out about McCarty’s online presence.

“I don’t think anyone would have guessed what he was because he was so associated with music and theater,” Reed said. “When people found out, there was a sense of betrayal that many people felt because theater and music are supposed to be a kind of safe haven for everyone.”

For Reed, the inclusion of McCarty takes away her ability to feel safe at events. While she doesn’t know if he should be banned from singing, Reed said, at the very least, the audience deserves to know when he’s performing.

“I think e Shedd should warn audiences when the show they are clapping for contains known Nazis,” Reed said. “By making people aware of his involvement in the show they can choose not to come, which is the very least venues could do.”

According to Ralph, e Shedd hosts over a 1,000 artists every year. To him, it’s unrealistic to imagine letting audiences know every single time an artist has controversial views.

“We would never even dream of announcing something like that on stage,” Ralph said. “Unless a performer’s past misdeeds or personal beliefs are an inherent part of his or her performance, such matters have no pertinence at all. We take our responsibility as a community leader seriously and did so in this situation.”

McCarty plans to continue performing in Eugene with e Gleeman, while still seeking “understanding and resolution” from the settlement with Dumpson.

“I understand that not all are willing to accept that I am attempting to make change for good in my life and in the community,” McCarty said. “I plan to move forward. I intend to continue musically with e Gleeman, through whom I have found great joy and a degree of acceptance and understanding for my situation and my history.”

ARTS & CULTURE THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN EUGENE AFTER MIDNIGHT

On Friday and Saturday nights, hordes of hungry, intoxicated Eugenians roam the streets for food.

But unfortunately, the town’s late-night food options are meager. Most people are forced to settle for unhealthy bar food or fast food that leaves them feeling guilty and probably just makes the next day’s hangover worse. For people under 21, the options are even slimmer.

But the Emerald is here to help. If you know where to look, there are some hidden gems for a latenight bite in Eugene. The following eateries are all-ages.

3. Sizzle Pie Sizzle Pie is a Eugene late-night staple. It might not be everybody’s favorite pizza spot in town, but it’s the only one that’s open until 3 a.m. every night. ere, you can mingle with an eclectic group of eaters and listen to the heavy metal that often blasts in the restaurant. Plus, you can eat pizza with metal-sounding names: Napalm Breath, Pig Destroyer and e Ripper are just a few of the options.

Sizzle Pie also makes vegan pizza that actually tastes good. Even committed carnivores will enjoy the Buffalo 666, Vegan Angel of Doom and Spiral Tap pizzas, and the signature vegan ranch is somehow better than the regular thing.

2. Dos Banderas Dos Banderas food cart has some of the best Mexican food in town, and it’s open until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. It’s easy to miss — nestled between Luckey’s Night Club and e Davis Restaurant and Bar downtown, but this little cart holds everything an inebriated eater could ever hope for.

For a small, cheap bite, have a delicious taco with your choice of meat for $3, or a veggie taco for $2.50. For something bigger, try one of Dos Banderas’ gargantuan burritos or tortas — Mexican bread stuffed with meat, cheese and covered in guacamole. e prices here are reasonable, and the food makes Burrito Boy, Eugene’s other late-night Mexican restaurant, taste like glorified Taco Bell. Dos Banderas doesn’t disappoint.

Mandy’s Family Restaurant

Amanda Watts opened the 24-hour Mandy’s Family Restaurant at 15th and Willamette on Dec. 27. It outshines other late-night joints in both food and ambience.

Unlike many other eateries open after 12 a.m., Mandy’s is a full-service restaurant. It’s a place to hangout, not just somewhere to quickly eat and leave.

It serves standard diner fare like burgers, sandwiches, home fries and eggs all night, but it also has some unusual options. If you want to treat yourself, try the Belgian Waffle Sandwich — a hedonistic combination of egg, cheese, meat and waffle. Finish it off with a milkshake or a slice of pie and call it a night.

COUNTRY MUSIC IS MAKING ITS WAY INTO POPULAR CULTURE

Tens of thousands of fans responded with a loud, resounding “Haw” back at the figure on the massive stage yelling at them, “Yee.” A second later it happened again, even louder this time. “When I say yee, you say haw! Yee,” “HAW!” On the next repetition the crowd got ahead of themselves and yelled, “Haw!” too early. “I didn’t say fucking Yee!” e performer on stage during the perfectly-lighted “golden hour” was Grammy winner Kacey Musgraves performing for Coachella’s nearly 100,000 attendees. Musgraves was breathing rare air as a country musician performing at arguably the most well-known music festival in the country — most performers are pop or hip-hop. is recognition is not unwarranted, however, as Musgraves is just coming off a Grammy win for best album. She took home the big, golden record player over the likes of Post Malone, Cardi B and Drake. e popularization of country music and its blending into mainstream hip-hop and popular culture has been a slow and steady infiltration. From Young ug’s “Beautiful ugger Girls” album in 2017 to the sensation of Mason Ramsey, and now the hit song “Old Town Road,” by Lil Nas X; the country

sound is more popular than ever. is movement of country in popularized culture is often referred to as “YeeHaw Culture.”

Young ug has always been one to push boundaries. Whether it be crossdressing, provocative music videos or his overall persona, he is assuredly not afraid to try new things. “Beautiful ugger Girls” was released on April 26, 2017, and featured ugger taking a more melodic singing approach.

Some of the songs on the album included what almost sounded like a little country twang with an acoustic guitar in the background that allowed for the album to be labeled by many as a “country” album. On the track “Family Don’t Matter (Feat. Millie Go Lightly),” the most country-sounding song on the album, Young ug even lets out a “Yee-haw” as an adlib. e next big instance of country breaking into the popular diaspora comes in March 2018, with the viral video of an 11-year-old boy dressed as a cowboy yodeling inside a Walmart.

Mason Ramsey doing his best impression of Hank Williams inside of the superstore reached millions and quickly catapulted Ramsey to fame. Just a month later, popular DJ Whethan brought Ramsey out on stage at Coachella to perform

the same song that made him viral.

Shortly after this performance at Coachella, Ramsey released his first single “Famous,” which made it up to 64 on the US Billboard Hot 100. en the hit song “Old Town Road”

by Lil Nas X released in December 2018, and gained viral popularity in early 2019. It even went so far as to make it to number 19 on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. e song has gained even more popularity as of late when country singer Billy Ray Cyrus hopped on the track in a remix released in April 2019. e song mixes both country vocals with rap lyrics, as well as rap vocals with country lyrics, all backed up by a trap style beat accompanied by country instrumentals. Although the song is categorized as country-rap, the song didn’t last long on Billboard’s Hot Country chart and was taken off due to it not matching up to the genre’s sound. is disqualification from the country charts led many to believe that Lis Nas X being a Black artist had an influence on the decision.

“Upon further review, it was determined that ‘Old Town Road’ by Lil Nas X does not currently merit inclusion on Billboard’s country charts,” Billboard said in a statement to Rolling Stone. “When determining

genres, a few factors are examined, but first and foremost is musical composition. While ‘Old Town Road’ incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.”

One line in particular from “Old Town Road” captures the countrywestern style oozing into not only music, but fashion too. Lil Nas X mentions in the song how there’s “Wrangler on my booty.” In the many recent popular songs and their videos, musicians are starting to wear chaps, cowboy hats and cowboy boots.

In Solange’s recent short film for her new album “When I Get Home,” cowboys are dressed in full cowboy garb accompanied with lassos and horses to round out the imagery. In Cardi B’s music video for “Please Me,” the rapper can be seen in a pink rhine-stoned western get-up. And to go back to Young ug’s song “Family Don’t Matter,” horses and a barn out in the country give the video a strong country-western tilt.

If Billboard Country Hot Country didn’t like Lil Nas X on their charts, they better get ready for a whole movement to turn country culture on its head.

“2019 will either be the year that the university corrected course,” said Rita Ludwig to the board, “or it will mark the year that the university descended into financial and educational ruin over a short-sighted decision.” e existential comments from Ludwig, a GE and fifth-year doctoral candidate in the psychology department, echoed the sentiment shared by each of the speakers: that the university shouldn’t balance the budget “on the backs” of students and staff through tuition increases, contract changes and program cuts. e packed showing at the board meeting was a sign of a controversy which has been brewing under the university’s surface the entire year: a budget crisis on the order of $34 million. at number represents what UO Chief Financial Officer Jamie Moffitt calls the “gap to fill.” at’s the total amount that the university’s expenses are projected to exceed its income next year. is year, that number is “larger than any number I’ve put up in front of a TFAB ever before,” Moffitt, who’s held this role for eight years, told the Tuition and Fees Advisory Board in January.

Among a variety of roles, Moffitt is responsible for coordinating and planning UO’s budget from year to year. While advisory boards, state influence and university officials with long titles complicate the picture, the university’s task is basically the same struggle that every one of its employees – and students, personally – deal with, too: making ends meet. is year, however, that will be harder for the university than it has been in the past, as operational expenses for the next year are projected to increase by about $24 million. at leaves a few options for “making ends meet” in the coming year. UO can spend less on some other costs, like the faculty and staff who execute the university’s educational mission.

It can try and convince the state legislature to contribute more money. Or it can ask students to pay more to attend classes.

The rising costs e university’s main budgeting account — the one that tuition and state operational funding go into — is what’s called the “Education and General” fund. at fund covers faculty and administrator salaries and expenses for the basic operations of the university, while other funds are used for things like new buildings, athletics or university housing. e university’s budget hurdles come in the form of increasing operational costs that the E&G fund has to pay for. Chief among those increases is a spike in required payments to Oregon’s Public Employee Retirement System, which the state mandates the university contribute to for former employees. is year, those costs are projected to increase about 14 percent, or $7.6 million, under the state system’s requirements, according to university financial documents. What’s more, PERS costs are recurring, meaning that similarly sized increases will occur every other year. e future of PERS requirements remains uncertain, as the Oregon Senate held a dramatic vote last week to make changes to the system.

However, the fact remains that for this year, the required contributions on the part of the university make up about a third of the university’s new costs.

Other projected increases include a rising minimum wage, state-mandated medical benefit payments and increasing salaries for faculty, staff and GE’s as employee unions bargain for new contracts. e rest of “the gap” between revenues and expenses comes from this year’s budget deficit which, CFO Moffitt told TFAB in May, “has gotten worse and worse” every quarter this year. ose salaries were a central topic at last week’s board meeting — and of considerations about the budget, as they make up about 80 percent of E&G fund expenses.

The cuts In one attempt to close the gap, university officials released a proposal in March to cut $11.6 million in expenses for the next year. e plan — which UO President Michael Schill told trustees would be finalized early this week

— includes cuts to every school and college and many other programs and departments, according to board documents.

While certain departments and programs such as UOPD, career advising and fundraising are protected from cuts, other programs face large decreases. Each of those cuts impacts the lives of the university employees staffing those areas, and those opposed to the cuts say they hinder the ability of the university to achieve its mission. e largest proposed cut, relative to department budget size, is slated for the Labor Education and Resource Center, which will be asked to reduce its expenses by about half. at means, said LERC Professor Gordon Lafer, three of the center’s six faculty will have to be let go.

“It would be devastating. It cuts half of our budget,” Lafer said of the proposal. “You take a six person department and cut in half, it’s devastating to the department. We’d have to cut a lot of the big programs that we do.” e LERC, Lafer said in an interview, extends UO’s educational mission by educating about 2,000 workers a year on union organizing and labor laws and by conducting state-level research on the economy. “ e [purpose of LERC’s academic] extension side is to bring the expertise and resources of the university to help Oregon workers beyond the boundaries of campus,” Lafer said.

Lafer made similar comments to the board of trustees, as did a number of other speakers at the meeting. While Lafer spoke, encouraging the board to make up for the budget deficit with cuts to administrator salaries, volunteers unraveled a list of about 1,200 people who’d signed a petition to “save LERC.” President Schill defended the proposal, saying at a forum earlier in May, “ e further away you go from directly serving students, the more likely you are to get a cut.” ough other employees face proposed cuts, the plans for LERC drew the most attention among the meeting’s speakers, with some going so far as to accuse university administrators of using the budget crisis as an opportunity for “union-busting.” e meeting’s final speaker addressed those very fears. Kurt Willcox was one of the original members of the board of trustees in 2014 and returned to this meeting to speak

to the current trustees.

“I’m very much worried that the university has turned away from the community, has turned away from its public service mission,” Willcox told the board at the meeting.

The state legislature’s options e public service mission Willcox referred to is a central point in the discussion of the university’s finances: How much should the state pay for the university’s contributions to the state?

At the current phase of the university’s budget, the single-largest lingering question is how much the state will allocate to the university for the next year. In other words, how much of the rising costs of PERS and new contracts they’re willing to cover. at amount will likely vary between $200,000 and $8 million, based on how much the state allocates to the Public University Support Fund. e PUSF funds each of Oregon’s seven public universities, a number so important to administrators that next year’s resident tuition is directly linked to it.

As the legislature slowly moves to finalize that number, UO is advocating for it to be on the higher end of that range. Hans Bernard and Libby Batlan both serve as lobbyists for UO, spending most of their days in the state capitol, trying to convince legislators about the importance of “investing” in the state’s universities. is year, according to the pair, was unique in that Oregon universities worked together to make the pitch for greater funding.

“Come June 30 when the budgets are passed, we’ll see where we land, but I do think that there has been a unified advocacy front across all stakeholders in higher ed that I haven’t seen since I’ve been at the U of O,” Batlan said in an interview. “I think it’s contributed to our success thus far.”

Also unique for this year was the outcome of the financial projection the state puts together to make budgeting decisions. is year, the state’s projected tax revenue was up significantly over what was expected, said Batlan, which could be good news for UO. e question left for the state legislature is exactly where to spend that money.

“In light of the revenue forecast, there is no debate about whether or not they can provide the resources,” Bernard said of the funds needed to keep tuition increases under 5 percent. “ e debate is whether or not they will choose to do so.”

Rising tuition For the second time this year, the board of trustees took another step to close the gap

when it voted to increase resident tuition for the next academic year at last week’s meeting. It did something similar in March with the approval of an increase to nonresident tuition. e approvals mean nonresidents will pay about $990 more for 45 credits next year, with residents paying somewhere between $434 and $935 more, depending on the state’s contribution and final rate approval in the coming months. e strongest opposition to proposals to increase tuition came from ASUO executives and student members of TFAB, who submitted a minority report to the board.

“I think they maybe see us as expendable.

As in, ‘ ey can suffer now as long as the students in the future won’t have to,’” said Imani Dorsey, outgoing ASUO internal vice president and TFAB member. “We should be making strides for it to happen as soon as possible. I know change happens really slow, change doesn’t happen overnight, but it can happen as soon as possible if we put in the effort to do that.”

In a interview with the Emerald in January, Dorsey expressed hope that university would consider “creative solutions” to the budget problem over the course of the year.

After several months on TFAB, however, Dorsey said she didn’t find that the university had taken a hard enough look at those solutions, like moving money from the “protected funds” for construction or athletics or changing the requirements of donations to the university.

“We’re really pushing big picture issues with TFAB, but we can’t really think of any big picture solutions with TFAB, besides tuition,” Dorsey said.

Unanswered questions e university has picked some solutions to cover the gap between its paycheck and its increased costs: a mix of cutting programs and staff, charging students more for classes and lobbying the state legislature for increased funding. at combination, however, leaves any number of questions unanswered: Will the state pay? What happens to the staff who have to go? What about the students who can’t afford to pay more?

More than those questions, though, the university’s current moment — the “gap,” the “crisis,” the cuts, the increases to tuition and the protesters at meetings — represents the much larger hurdle the people of Oregon are currently facing: What’s the purpose of this public university? And, who should have to pay for that?

OPINION HOW TO FOSTER HEALTHY ROOMMATE RELATIONSHIPS

Is there really such a thing as a perfect roommate?

It seems as if every person I’ve encountered has had more than a few complaints about their living situation. Swapping bad roommate stories is the college equivalent of making small talk about the weather.

So, how exactly do you address that one roommate who refuses to do their dishes or turn their music off before 2 a.m.?

Communication is key.

Confrontation may seem like a scary idea when you’re new to dorm or apartment living, but nipping these kinds of habits in the bud is better than letting them go on for too long.

It sets the tone of how you want the rest of the year to go.

Sometimes you get stuck with a roommate who you simply do not mesh with on a personal level.

Opposites attract, until they don’t.

It’s important to recognize your differences and find a dynamic that

works for both of you.

For example, if you’re introverted and your ideal Saturday night consists of getting into pajamas and watching YouTube videos until you fall asleep, you might not appreciate having a roommate who throws parties every weekend without asking your permission first.

Be upfront about your needs. Again, effective communication works wonders when setting boundaries and ground rules with someone new. One way to accomplish this is meeting with your roommate once a month to discuss how things are going and what needs to change. Or, if you’d prefer something less formal, sending a text or leaving a sticky note can get a message across almost as effectively as meeting in person. Your roommate should hopefully respect your comfort zone and attempt to compromise with you in order to make a non-ideal living situation more bearable.

Sometimes, the amount of people sharing one space has a huge effect on your overall happiness at home.

Many people live by the mantra ‘Two is company, three’s a crowd.’ If you live with more than one roommate, you’re probably aware of the extra problems that come up with this dynamic.

Living with more people means cheaper rent and less pressure to socialize every time you’re home, but the possibility of feeling ganged up on is also more prevalent in this situation. Picking sides with your roommates creates a toxic environment in which nobody feels comfortable. Instead of making everything a majority rules issue, try to go with the flow more than you normally would living on your own.

Not everything is worth an argument.

One of the most common roommate complaints I hear around campus is that everyone thinks they live with a slob. Or maybe you’re

the slob, and you’re tired of your roommates nagging you about every crumb they find on the stovetop.

Keep in mind that everyone is new to this whole living-on-your-own thing, and gentle reminders about cleaning are more effective than passive-aggressively making things worse. If you’re the slob, be aware that you now share a space with someone other than your family, and you need to treat it with respect.

It’s also important to remember that your mental health and happiness come first. If you’ve tried communicating with your roommate and things still aren’t changing, moving out is the right thing to do if it will improve your overall well-being.

College roommates can go on to be lifelong best friends if they know how to handle things properly.

Try not to give into those pesky microaggressions, and speak your mind when the situation calls for it.

BY ANDY STEVENS • TWITTER @VNDREWWS In our current social climate, personal branding might seem like something that is tied to the internet and social media, but it is in fact something that can benefit us in all areas of our lives.

Social media is dominated by people shoving their personal brand down your throat, and most of the time, that brand is manufactured for publicity. at is not the kind of brand I’m talking about today.

Finding your personal brand is not all about clothing or style like it may seem. For me, much of my personal brand is based on my values, what I believe in, and how I present myself. e first step towards cultivating your personal brand should be reflecting on what is most important to you. It doesn’t need to be some kind of grand altruistic principle, but small things that you can actively do day-to-day. For me, some of those things are always giving people the benefit

of the doubt and trying to make someone smile.

Beneath those easy surface-level traits, you should try and find the principles that you think are the most important.

Understanding what you value will also help you recognize those traits and the lack of them in other people. ose you spend time with are also reflective of your personal brand, and having peers who challenge you in healthy ways and lift you up is crucial. ough personal brand is something that should come from within, it is also something that you can represent externally. Clothes and how you handle yourself will help show others that you are confident and know yourself. e core of personal brand is confidence. Having a personal brand is something that requires selfconfidence, but it is also something that will build your confidence. Your demeanor and style should be reflective of your internal confidence. When you

are confident in what you believe in on the inside, it will shine through to the outside. is is the aspect most commonly associated with personal branding. Find clothes that make you feel good. Everyone has a different sense of style, and you should be excited to find what yours is, especially if it is informed by your personal values. e problem with this is that being able to dress exactly how you want is a privilege not everyone has. at is why it is just as important, if not more important, to carry yourself confidently, and show that you know yourself.

People will be drawn to you when they see that you’re confident. It won’t happen all at once, but being proud of who you are and what you believe in will seep into your daily life, and eventually people will take notice.

Having a personal brand is mostly about loving yourself. Self-love leads to self-confidence and helps other people see why they should love you.

IS LEAVING A LASTING IMPACT ON OREGON BASEBALL

He had just struck out the potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 MLB draft, Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman, with a 100 mph fastball to strand the bases loaded. “ at was really cool. eir guy versus our guy — big on big,” Oregon third baseman Spencer Steer said. “ at was going to decide the ballgame. I had 100 percent confidence Nelly would get him out.”

At 6-foot-3, Nelson has an intimidating presence on the mound. He glares at opposing teams’ hitters, covering everything but his eyes with his glove until he delivers each pitch. at competitive spirit is what drives Nelson each and every day.

“It’s what you live for,” Nelson said. “ at is the kind of situation you want to put yourself in. Face the best, and prove yourself against the best.”

Nelson, a junior from Henderson, Nevada, has been the Ducks most consistent performer on the mound. Having bounced around his first two years,

including playing some shortstop last season, year three has had him solely focus on the mound.

In addition to his fastball and curveball combination, Nelson has developed a cutter as his outpitch this season.

“I’m really liking how that is coming along,” Nelson said.

No matter the role, Nelson has dominated opposing hitters, striking out 102 batters, including a season high 12 against Oregon State on May 11, even though he has switched between starter, middle reliever and closer. He is only the third pitcher in the modern era of Oregon baseball (2009-present) to surpass 100 strikeouts. e other two are David Peterson and Tyler Anderson, who were first round picks in the MLB draft.

“He is a very unselfish player and great team guy,” head coach George Horton said. “I would have liked to see his junior year unscathed, health wise, and then with a complete pitching staff, he probably

could have pitched where he belonged.”

In addition to the two former first rounders for the Ducks, there are two major leaguers that Nelson enjoys watching pitch: Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard of the New York Mets. “ ose are a couple of lights out guys, and are out there touching high 90s and doing it for the whole game,” Nelson said. “I wish I could do that. at would be pretty fun.”

While citing that he still has a few improvements to make in his game, Nelson is arguably a first round selection come the MLB amatuer draft on June 3, but he tries to remain focused on his task at hand.

“It definitely crosses my mind,” Nelson said on the upcoming draft. “I talk to a lot of scouts and it’s hard not to think about it. But right now, definitely focused in on the team. And if this is my last year, I want to end with the team fighting and win something.”

OREGON SOCCER ALUM MARLO SWEATMAN HEADS TO THE FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP

Most athletes go through career low points. For Marlo Sweatman, that low point came after her one season at Florida State where she only saw the field six times as the Seminoles made the College Cup. Sweatman transferred to Oregon and hit the reset button on her soccer career, eventually launching her to the heights of the World Cup. “ ese coaches took a chance on me and brought me into the program and got me into my high peak,” Sweatman said. “So I give a lot of credit to them for bringing me back into my career and setting me straight.”

At Oregon, Sweatman became a captain her senior year and played as a defensive midfielder throughout her three-year career. e Ducks’ coaches knew they had a special player, but for her to get to the next level, she needed to tweak certain aspects of her game.

“We knew that she had the qualities and the soccer IQ and to be fair, she had been involved at the youth levels before she came to Oregon,” Oregon associate head coach Manny Martins said. “ e question mark was always going to be fitness and athleticism. I think what’s great about Marlo is she wasn’t denying that those were the hurdles.”

Sweatman says she has sorted out her fitness, which has helped her become a more attack-minded midfielder. And after graduation following the 2016-17 season, she became a professional, taking her from a town with one road and one restaurant in Sweden to the Netherlands to her current club, St. Mihály, in Hungary.

She got the call from the Jamaica first team for the CONCACAF Caribbean Women’s Qualifiers in May 2018, in which she and Jamaica beat Guadeloupe 13-0 in her first game for the senior team. Sweatman will be playing this summer in France at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and will be the first Duck to play at a World Cup. “I don’t even know what to expect,” she said. “It’s going to be so unreal and so amazing.”

Sweatman, who was born and raised in Virginia, chose to play for her mother’s home nation of Jamaica over the United States after receiving youth team call-ups.

“When I was choosing between the US and Jamaica to play for, I always felt that I’d rather play for a team that qualifies for the first time in their history than being just another player in a pool.”

Sweatman did exactly that. On October 17, 2018, Sweatman and Jamaica qualified for the Women’s World Cup by beating Panama in a shootout for the third and final CONCACAF spot at the tournament.

“It really didn’t hit me until we were in

the moment of how big the stage was,” Sweatman said. “Just waiting for the PKs to start, my stomach’s in my throat, but I was very confident in our team.”

Jamaica will play in a group with Brazil, Australia and Italy. Brazil has been a dominant force in the game for Sweatman’s entire life thanks to players like six-time world player-of-the-year Marta, who may miss the Jamaica game due to injury, and Formiga, who is playing in her seventh World Cup. But Sweatman says she is most weary of Australia, a fast-paced, highscoring team led by goal-scoring machine Sam Kerr.

It will be intimidating for Sweatman and Jamaica, but it won’t be the first time the team will play against high-caliber talent.

In the semifinal of the CONCACAF Cup, which serves as the qualifying tournament for the World Cup, Jamaica played the United States.

“Your first few thoughts are, ‘Wow that’s Alex Morgan or Julie Ertz, Lindsey Horan, all of them.’ You’re a little starstruck, especially when you’re in that tunnel lining up with the starting 11,” Sweatman said. “ en you realize, you’re just like them and you can compete in any match. Once the whistle blew, it was just another game.” e winner earned a spot at the World Cup. A loss meant a third-place game for the final automatic spot, which Jamaica earned in that shootout win over Panama. e team’s qualification and success has made them a recognizable group back on the island.

“It’s a small country,” Sweatman said.

“When we drive on the bus, they’re waving and you hear them saying ‘Oh it’s the Reggae Girlz.’ It’s very moving and a lot of people recognize us.”

To top it all off, Sweatman will get to share part of her World Cup with Manny Martins, who is scouting future opponents for the United States women’s national team.

“It’s really cool that Manny can see me at the highest stage knowing he was a part of my journey,” Sweatman said. “It’s just amazing that two Ducks will be at the World Cup.” As the first ever Duck to play in the World Cup, Sweatman is setting a precedent and leaving an important message for young players with World Cup-sized dreams.

“Never give up on your dreams no matter how low you get, because obviously I was at one of the top schools — Florida State — and decided to transfer because it wasn’t the right path for me,” she said. “Just because you fail once doesn’t mean you can’t end up at the world stage later down the road.”
