Words by Shannon Enriquez | Photos by Xifan Cai

As summer nears, dreaming of travel and leisure is only natural—especially for college students preparing for finals. With this visualization of vacation, however, comes the stress of packing and the process of traveling as a whole. Knowing what to bring, what not to bring and travel hacks can be challenging. Making the most out of your trip includes having a positive travel experience and packing well. Summer is a time when traveling is not only accepted, but encouraged. With this guide, you are sure to have the trip you have been dreaming of all finals week.

Pack only the necessities

wIf you’re anything like me, overpacking is what I like to call an unhealthy habit. To avoid this terrible tradition, be sure to have an idea of your trip itinerary so you can plan your outfits accordingly. Not only does this take the stress away from choosing a new outfit each day, but it makes your packing lighter.

Make the most of your carry-on bag

Nothing is worse than getting to your seat and realizing your carry-on takes up all your leg-room space. Packing a small, efficient bag makes for a more relaxing trip, for both you and the person sitting next to you.

Hygiene

Take absolutely no shame in applying a sheet mask mid-flight; your skin will thank you. The air is always dry on airplanes so whip your facemask out of your carry-on and you will be looking and feeling fresh when stepping off the plane. If the sheet mask is too extra for you, try eye masks. Smaller and less visible, yet just as effective, eye masks will hide your exhaustion.

Hydrate

The most important step in ensuring you have a positive travel experience. Bring an empty water bottle in your carry-on and refill, refill, refill! The earth will thank you for using a reusable water bottle and your body will thank you for staying healthy and hydrated.

Download

Whether it be movies, TV shows, or music, be sure to have your favorites ready-to-go. Trust me, this will save you from sitting through a plane ride without entertainment. Sure, talking to your neighbor can be enjoyable, but there comes a time when you’ll wish you had some movies saved. Taking the risk to see if your plane has a TV is too dangerous of a game.

Read For Leisure

A nice change from assigned study-cases for your classes. Summer is the perfect time to actually read the book you want to read. If you don’t know what to read, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of online sites guiding you to choose the perfect summer book. From The New York Times best seller list to Free People blogs, there is no shortage of book recommendations. Taking a break from your phone and picking up a book can make your summer trip even more relaxing.

jumping on those jobs

Words By Lucille Shadburne | Photos by Keven Salazar

Trying to jumpstart your career during or right after college can be a very daunting task, especially if you feel behind in job-snagging. But fear not my friend! There are many resources out there so that you don’t have to go through the process alone. Schooling, jobs, and housing can all be difficult things to handle while on top of that also trying to maintain a social life, and the idea of finding balance just seems impossible. These resources will help you take the world head on instead of feeling overwhelmed and not knowing where to start. The real world doesn’t seem as daunting when you have people and resources to help you through it.

UNIVERSITY OF OREGON CAREER CENTER

INDEED.COM

The Career Center is located across the street from the Erb Memorial Union (EMU) building right next to the Gerlinger building. This cCenter has a friendly staff that are prepared to help you with finding careers and internships. They provide resources such as advising, application editing and support, mock interviews, job hunting, and so much more. If you’re feeling lost in the process of finding jobs and internships, the Career Center will bring you direction.

Indeed is a useful site that is quite popular among people searching for jobs. It caters to all types of job interests and provides a variety of options in every type of job field. This website particularly is great because you can actually apply for jobs through Indeed. It offers research capabilities for salaries and job trends as well, so it provides services in things beyond just a list of jobs to apply to.

ALL STAR LABOR AND STAFFING

ROBERT HALF

If you’re feeling desperate for some experience to build your resume before getting started in your career, temp jobs are a great way to go as you take some time for exploration. One place in Eugene that you can visit for support is All Star Labor and Staffing located on 235 W 10th Ave.

For those you are looking for jobs in Eugene and plan on staying, there are a plethora of places you can refer to locally to help find you jobs—Robert Half being one of them. Robert Half also has a website at roberthalf.com to help guide people in their job search along with an office at 800 Willamette St. Suite #430.

LINKEDIN.COM

GLASSDOOR.COM

While Indeed is more factually focused, LinkedIn is more communication based. LinkedIn is a website to help people search for jobs, but also to help them gain contacts and form connections with other people in the professional field. People share a professional persona over LinkedIn and showcase some of the work they have accomplished. It’s a great website for sharing skills and ideas.

This website is very similar to LinkedIn and Indeed in the ways that it shares salary information and job openings, however, it is also unique by how they offer interview practice as well. Glassdoor shares interview questions on their website to help people prepare for going in for an interview with specific companies. This gives you more leverage in your job hunting and can help you ace your interview. M O N D AY, J U N E 1 0 T H , 2 0 1 8

Getting Rid of Things Responsibly Words by Sophie Bange | Photos by Kimberly Harris

Students deal with a lot of changes in their lives around this time of year. Some are graduating and transitioning into the “real world,” others may be moving between apartments or houses, and others are just transitioning from one year to the next. Whatever your situation is, you’re probably going to have a lot of stuff during that transition. Luckily, this is a college town, which means there are always places and people looking to buy, sell and trade things; and donating or selling your stuff is much more sustainable and ethical than sending it straight to the landfill. From clothing and furniture to unused cosmetics and craft supplies, there’s a place in Eugene for all of your random clutter to go out of your life and into someone else’s. Here are just a few places around town that you can turn one student’s trash is another person’s treasure!

FOOD for Lane County Most students don’t have to worry about their canned goods going bad over the summer. But graduating seniors probably have small collections of pasta, rice, spices and soups that won’t exactly fit in their carry-ons. FOOD for Lane County will accept all of these and more, including fresh and frozen foods. Check their website (foodforlanecounty.org/donate/) to find the donation center nearest you.

Ophelia’s Place Ophelia’s Place is a local organization which aims to empower, educate and support girls which accepts donations for their programs and services. They accept general craft supplies and books. If you have any granola bars kickin’ around from your last Costco trip, they also accept healthy snacks! Donations can be brought to their location on Pearl St.

Donation Centers Goodwill, St. Vinnie’s, Salvation Army - take your pick! There are plenty of donation centers that will happily accept clothing, accessories, furniture, CDs, DVDs, LPs, books and kitchenware, just to name a few. Do it for the tax write-off and the kindness of your heart.

Womenspace Womenspace serves survivors of intimate partner violence by providing crisis support, emergency shelters, support groups and childcare. They accept donations at their office on Pearl St. Due to limited space, they have a specific wish list of needs on their website (https://www.womenspaceinc.org/wish-list), which includes toiletries, cosmetics and arts + craft supplies.

Decluttering Tips Use two bins labeled keep and donate and a trash bag to keep the chaos that comes with decluttering under control. Buffalo Exchange We get it - students (and graduates!) need money. Buffalo Exchange is one of the best places to bring higher-quality, name brand clothing and accessories to make a little money. Haul your bags to their location on 5th and Pearl, and they’ll sort through it for you. You’ll leave with some store credit or cash, and can donate whatever they don’t take.

Plato’s Closet Plato’s Closet has a similar model to Buffalo Exchange - they’ll buy clothing, accessories, and shoes that are in season and in style. However (in my experience, at least), they’re a little less picky about what they’re willing to take from you, so may just have more luck here than Buffalo. One of the best things about Plato’s Closet is their new text-based system, so you can just drop off your clothes and they’ll text you when they’re sorted and ready to be picked up. This makes it especially easy to make a few extra bucks while on a busy student schedule.

Ask Your Friends, and Your Friends’ Friends While many students are looking to get rid of things, just as many are also looking to buy. Send out a few messages to friends, group chats, and classmates: “Anyone interested in this?” You can also make a few bucks by offering a friends and family discount.

Facebook Marketplace You can sell just about anything on Facebook marketplace. I once saw someone trying to sell wire coat hangers shaped into swans as “art” for $5 a piece. What’s great about Facebook marketplace is there are many groups you can join based on location. Some groups to look for include: Eugene Classifieds, Eugene Buy-Sell-Trade, and Duck Swap. Simply upload a few photos of your item(s), name your price and specify whether it’s U-haul or can be delivered. Voila!

Materials Exchange Center for Community Arts If you have any art supplies laying around, chances are, MECCA could use it. MECCA is a local nonprofit dedicated to conserving the arts and the environment. They accept donations at their location at 449 Willamette St. Everything from textiles and fabric scrap to shells and beads contributes to their Teacher Resource Center and Warehouse, studio space, and various special events.

finding your Ater College

friends Words and Photos by Lucille Shadburne

Trying to make friends after college can be difficult for people— whether you’re moving to a new part of the world or not. We all get so used to the group of friends we acquired at school, and while you might continue a connection with those friends, it’s unlikely that you’ll end up living in the same area. It’s easy to begin to feel out of place in a new place, so here are some tips to prevent you from spending your post-graduation days alone.

bathrooms are a great place to meet people I am not suggesting that you be that person peeking under the stalls to get someone’s attention, but while you’re washing your hands at the sink and there’s someone else washing their hands, a great way to initiate an introduction is by complimenting their outfit or to comment on the lack of paper towels.

don’t skip out on social events Introduce yourself to your coworkers Whether they work in the same department as you or not, it’s a great way to not only meet new people, but help establish your presence in the community. By introducing yourself to the people you work with, you’ll not only gain a new group of friends, but it might also make your workday more tolerable.

find some after work activities Although it may be tempting to go straight home to your cats and a glass of wine after work, finding community activities to get engaged in during your free time is a great way to put yourself out there. Some types of activities you could try are cooking or exercise classes. There are bound to be other people in your classes and if you’re in a class together, you probably will be able to find something in common.

Although the prospect of going to talk to a bunch of strangers or people that you aren’t very familiar with might seem intimidating, you’re likely to end up glad you went. Especially if you are in the market for new friends, going to social events is a great way to meet new people or solidify friendships with people that you didn’t know as well before. Social events can be taxing and overstimulating to some people, but if you’re the kind of person who likes them, you could end up being included in regular gatherings like poker night or weekly after work drinks.

Don’t be picky Judging people will make it harder for you to get to know people. Reserving judgment on people will give you the chance to get to know who they are as a person. If you decide that you don’t want to be friends with someone because of how they look or how they dress, you miss that opportunity to make a new friend. Instead of doing that, try to strike up a conversation with them to see if they have a good sense of humor, or if the two of you have common interests.

Things You’re Forgetting to do Before you Graduate These are your final moments before true adulthood and it’s important to remember that the stress will probably only get worse from here. While there’s still a couple of weeks left before you parade through campus in a sea of green and throw your cap into the air, those are weeks meant to appreciate college life while it’s still here. Here are five things you should do before you graduate.

Maybe you’re part of the tiny fraction of people who’ve never thought that the due date on Canvas for your bio project was 11 PM and not 11 AM, but most people have. For your last projects this year, forget to turn one in on time, for old times sake, so you can send a desperate email at 2 AM from your phone begging for an exception. This is a choose-your-own-risk challenge; just because you’re graduating soon, doesn’t mean they won’t fail you!

Words a nd

Photos b

y Lauren

Bruce

Maybe you’ve thought about it, maybe you already know or you don’t care. Many rumors go around about Puddles, but it’s finally time you find out who Puddles really is. Who resides inside the suit? Is it a duck after all? Are you really ready to graduate if you haven’t at least tried to figure it out? While you’re thinking about sending out that desperate email and trying to calculate your “what if” grade on Canvas, take a breather for a second. You’re probably still going to graduate. Why not head out to a party to celebrate the last Wine Wednesday of your undergraduate life? You can email your professor on Thursday and tell them you’re sick. It’ll feel like freshman year again, and you wouldn’t want to miss that chance.

After you’ve gotten your grad photos in front of your favorite places around campus, don’t forget to pick your favorite shot where you’re throwing a reasonably recognizable “o” and wearing your cap and gown outside of Lillis and write a nostalgic post for all your friends. Can you even say you graduated if you didn’t? How else will anyone know you have a B.S. in Poly Sci if it’s not on Insta?

Nothing says nostalgia or dedication like being the person at the bars with a study guide in one hand and an AMF in the other. Who says you can’t ace a psych test and celebrate the end of your years with friends at the same time? It’s an important time management skill you’ve learned over the years and a valuable talent to be able to work in a high pressure, high noise environment. And yes, you can put that on a resume.

Safe

Keeping Your Home

House Locks

Over The the Summer Traveling over the summer is something that many of us want to participate in. Summer break is the perfect time to explore and to go to different far away destinations because you can take your online class work with you, or you’re able to take time off work much easier than miss classes like you would be during the school year. Before you go off unprepared, however, it’s important to think about the safety of your home before you leave. Words by Lucille Shadburne

Pets For the safety of your pets and your belongings, it’s important to arrange for them to be taken care of while you’re gone. Whether it’s a dog, cat, hamster or snake, they need to have a person there feeding them, keeping them company and making sure they’re living in healthy conditions while you’re off traveling. It’s good to reach out to people months before your trip and to confirm in follow ups with the house sitter to be certain that they will be there for the time that you won’t be.

No matter what sort of locking or security system you have, it’s important to make sure that not one lock goes missed, and if you do have a security system, make sure it’s activated before you depart on your adventure. Most people think that if you lock the doors, it’s good, but you should really make sure that all the windows—even the ones upper stories of your house—and doggie or cat doors are also locked. Although it seems unlikely that someone would break into your house using a ladder to climb into the second story of your house, it’s better to prepare for any and every scenario.

Neighbors

If you don’t know your neighbors yet, a good thing to do before you leave for your trip is to go around the neighborhood offering up sweet treats to build that relationship. If you’re comfortable with your neighbors, alerting the people who live near you that you’re planning on going out of town can add extra guarding eyes on your home. If your neighbors know when you’re going out of town and you ask them to keep an eye out for any suspicious behavior around your house, your neighborhood will be much more aware of your home’s security.

Valuables If you can, another good thing to do is to lock up your expensive and valuable items. Some things you might want to lock and hide are jewelry, family heirlooms and electronics. If you don’t already have one, invest in a lock box and hide it in a very obscure place. There are some things that are impossible to bring with you and easy to hide such as a large TV, however, this luckily means that they’re also hard to steal. It’s said that burglars go for top drawer of dressers when rampaging because that is where people usually store their most valuable items. Therefore, if you’re hiding your possessions, store them in the middle or bottom drawers instead.
