A LETTER FROM MANAGEMENT We, the Emerald editorial management, think there is information that, if heard, discussed and acted upon, could improve the lives of many. e Emerald has a silly motto: We make college better. Although it’s light hearted and colloquial, in it lies our deepest hope for our upcoming year managing the Emerald. We hope to create a body of information, both reflective and forward-looking of today’s culture, that will inform the actions of the community and benefit a great number of lives.

What we think we do:

Our arts and culture and sports desks examine and dissect the meaning of paramount cultural phenomena within the University of Oregon community. Our news desk reports on the aspects of local society that impact our livelihoods: crime, politics, education, economics, etc. Yet, a distinct part of our news desk is investigative in nature, and seeks to identify the ways our society ought to be, and then uncovers the causes, sometimes clandestine, that hamper us. And our opinion desk supplies our readers with arguments from multiple perspectives on pertinent issues so the community can have educated arguments surrounding these topics and not need to take excessive amounts of time to consider these ideas alone. en, we supply this information in innovative ways to increase accessibility and veracity. Our photo, video, podcast, illustration, design, engagement and web development desks curate media to support faster, easier and more palatable information.

How we do what we think we do:

If we knew the sole information that would improve each and every one of our readers’ lives, that’s what we would seek out and produce. Unfortunately, we can’t be sure what that exact information is. For that reason, we recruit and train a group of multi-disciplined individuals to seek out relevant information among the possibly infinite pursuits of knowledge, and these reporters are purposefully trained to disseminate that information.

CLAIMING ILLNESS FROM MOLD EXPOSURE IN EAST CAMPUS HOUSING

BY MICHAEL TOBIN • TWITTER @TOBIN_TWEETS A family who lived in East Campus Housing is suing the University of Oregon for $750,000, claiming the university violated the state’s landlord and tenant act and that they were sickened by mold in the attic due to the university’s negligence.

According to the complaint, Paul and Emily Meng and their two children suffered symptoms consistent with mold exposure and diagnostic tests confirmed the presence of mold in the attic of their home.

University officials declined to discuss the Mengs’ claims or to produce any inspection records for the residence, citing the ongoing litigation. e lawsuit, filed in July, marks the second time residents of East Campus Housing sued the university because of the conditions of facilities. In September 2016, a law student and UO employee sued the university for $74,017 after they had to vacate an East Campus House that was contaminated with lead paint. e case was settled in fall 2017 and the couple received a $120,000 settlement.

East Campus Housing units are rented to graduate students, including those who may have families, and the houses range from one to five bedrooms. Paul Meng is a doctoral candidate pursuing a degree in special education. Many of the properties are on Moss, Columbia and Villard streets. e UO’s Public Records Office says the university has managed more than 70 East Campus Housing units over the last 50 years. e Mengs’ complaint states that in summer 2017, the ceiling of the house located at 1709 Moss St. began to sag due to roof leaks and the university’s lack of maintenance. According to the complaint, the members of the Meng family began to suffer symptoms consistent with mold exposure in September. Paul Meng suffered symptoms such as severe headaches, sinus infections, swelling in his extremities and bleeding rashes. Emily Meng suffered from a variety of symptoms, including severe headaches, vertigo and recurring sinus infections. e complaint claims that the Mengs’ children also suffered symptoms of mold exposure, including stomach aches and changes in behavior, such as irritability and personality and neuro-cognitive problems.

As a result of the symptoms and mold, the family said it had to vacate the house and move and is now seeking compensation for the costs of mold-sampling diagnostic tests and past and future medical expenses. e family is also suing for loss and contamination of personal property, moving

expenses and noneconomic damages that occurred as a result of the violation of the residential landlord tenant act. “ ey’re not activists; they got a couple of sick kids and they’re sick themselves,” said Calvin “Kelly” Vance, the Meng family’s lawyer. Vance specializes in toxic mold litigation and represented the plaintiffs who sued the UO in 2016. e complaint claims that the UO failed to maintain the property in a “safe and habitable” condition — a violation of Oregon’s Residential Landlord and Tenant Act. e complaint also stated that the university was negligent because it failed to inspect, discover, prevent or abate the mold contamination.

Emily said the ceiling would “bubble up” and that she contacted the UO three or four times about the issue.

“We contacted them multiple times and asked them for different abatements. Every time our ceiling had an issue, we called it in,” she said. “We didn’t know it was mold, but we contacted them about our ceiling.

Our ceiling would make this big bubble, they would come in and pop the bubble and patch it.” e Emerald submitted a public records request on Sept. 13 for the inspection records of East Campus Housing residences.

UO spokesperson Molly Blancett then contacted the Emerald on Sept. 17 to set up a meeting with Adam Jones, the university’s building environmental science manager. e Building Environmental Science team coordinates inspections and project management and oversees mold prevention.

But two days later, the UO Office of Public Records told the Emerald that the university would not be able to discuss East Campus Housing as there is “litigation pending related to these properties.” In an email, the records office said it also would not produce inspection records for the properties because those records would likely be part of litigation, and those types of records are exempt under Oregon’s Public Records Law. Vance says that whenever he has a client who believes they have been exposed to mold, he urges them to act quickly.

“When people call me, I tell them there are three things they have to do,” Vance said. “ ey need to have the place tested, find a doctor that understands mold and can treat and do the right testing on you, and you need to move.”

Vance said he recommends his clients ask their doctors for a medical test that will determine if they have been exposed to mold.

HAMILTON AND WALTON RESIDENCE HALLS TO BE DEMOLISHED, REPLACED IN NEXT FEW YEARS

BY MICHAEL TOBIN TWITTER @TOBIN_TWEETS Campus will have a whole new look in two years with two new dorms. e UO administration plans to demolish the Hamilton and Walton residence halls and replace them with two to three new buildings by November 2023.

In April, the Emerald reported that the UO administration was “considering the future” of Hamilton and Walton residence halls and that demolition was an option. Dr. Roger ompson, vice president of Student Services and Enrollment Management, said that the demolition allows the UO to not be constrained by the previous footprints of the existing buildings. “ is is an exciting moment in time,” ompson said. “Let’s not put limits on things.” ompson said he presented the idea to the

UO’s Board of Trustees in May and they were quite receptive to the idea of two new dorms. “ e biggest concern raised by trustees was the impact on students in the form of cost, and I feel comfortable that Roger, Michael and [the] team have been thoughtful in both controlling project costs and ensuring there is a range of affordable housing options available to students,” Ross Kari, the chair of the Board of Trustees Finance and Facilities Committee said in a statement. ompson said that keeping costs affordable for students was a factor when it came to the new dorms and adding more rooms will keep the cost down. ompson said the new residence halls will cost slightly more, but the costs will be spread out among the students. “ at’s the great thing,” ompson said. “We can keep price to a modest increase.” e Hamilton and Walton residence halls

currently house 1,400 beds between them, and as of April, the halls had 1,311 students living between them. With the new plans, the UO anticipates that the buildings will hold 1,800 beds between them. ompson said that he toured schools around the Pac-12, such as Arizona State, University of Arizona, University of Southern California and University of Washington to gain inspiration for what the space could look like.

Although the discussions about the future of the residence halls have been happening between members of administration and the Board of Trustees, ompson said that he is seeking student input on what the residence halls may look like.

“As a division, we can’t move forward without talking to a lot of students,” ompson said. “We need to make sure we’re talking to students, but also more importantly, listening [to students].”

More than anything else, though, the Dropkick Murphys have become synonymous with the celebration of Irish heritage — in particular, St. Patrick’s Day. “I love the history and the traditions associated with St. Paddy’s Day, but a lot of people just use it as an excuse to get drunk,” Dropkick Murphys drummer Matt Kelly wrote in an email to the Emerald. “ e band is Irish-American, so the association is welcomed.”

St. Patrick’s Day isn’t until March, but on Friday, Sept. 21, the Dropkick Murphys hosted its own Irish-American heritage celebration in the form of a punk concert at Eugene’s Cuthbert Amphitheater. e concert was the first time the Celtic rockers performed in Eugene in over five years. Even though the band took a long break from performing in Eugene, Kelly has fond memories of the city. “ e venue was awesome, the crowd was great, and we went to Voodoo Donuts,” Kelly said of the band’s last Eugene performance.

“All-in-all, Eugene has a funky vibe and lots of great eateries and package stores.”

He also mentioned that he picked up copies of a couple of Alice Cooper and Slade vinyls at Eugene’s House of Records.

With that said, touring isn’t always shopping for records and trying new food, especially for a band that’s been together for 22 years. Kelly said that one of the biggest drawbacks of being in the band for him personally is missing a lot of family events due to touring. e Dropkick Murphys were joined by fellow Irish-American punk-rock band Flogging Molly at the Cuthbert. e two bands have toured together many times in the past, including on a European tour last winter.

“It’s a blast touring with those guys,” Kelly said. “We’ve been friends for almost 20 years and they’re a pleasure to be around and to play with every night. e crowds seem to like the combination, too!”

Kelly joined the Dropkick Murphys in the spring of 1997, a year after the band formed.

He has since completed multiple worldwide tours and contributed to all seven of the band’s studio records.

Despite growing in popularity, the

Dropkick Murphys haven’t forgotten where they came from or what they represent, Kelly said.

“Twenty years into playing in a band, we’re not really ‘working class’ by tax bracket or because we don’t swing a hammer nine to five these days,” Kelly said.

“But when you’re born into the working class, raised by working-class parents, it’s just part of you.” e music the Dropkick Murphys produces represents that commitment to the community in which they were raised. e band’s latest record, “11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory,” explores themes that aren’t usually associated with rockstars. e record, still anchored in up-tempo Celtic punk, discusses opioid addiction and the U.S. drug overdose epidemic. e band’s members have been personally affected by those topics, and Kelly said they wanted to share those painful experiences, hoping that it would resonate with fans.

“We have spoken to a lot of [fans] who have told us they’ve used our songs as a source of strength and support,” Kelly said. “ at means a lot.”

Along with raising awareness for those causes through music, the band also runs a charity called the Claddagh Fund. According to its website, the charity aims to raise money and awareness for nonprofits the Dropkick Murphys considers to have a significant impact on local communities. e Dropkick Murphys are “throwing ideas around” for material on the next album, but Kelly said the band won’t dive into an intense writing process until early next year. He expects the band to have new music for fans by late 2019, pending any unexpected delays.

Not everyone who attends a Dropkick Murphys concert is excited to hear the band’s new material, though. As with any band that experiences a certain level of popularity, there are new fans who only want to hear the hits.

“Yeah, that’s a bum-out,” Kelly said. “My dream would be for the barricade-huggers to get the hell to the back and let the diehards to the front. I hope that these newbies get into the rest of the stuff — but of course, it takes time. But man, get in the back!”

Between constant touring, individual interactions with fans and the demand to produce new material, there are many ups and downs to being in a successful band.

But Kelly views those challenges as minor hiccups that come with the job.

“I’m honored to have not been kicked out!” Kelly said jokingly. “But seriously, it’s been the fulfillment of a childhood dream to be in a touring band. I’m traveling around the world with a bunch of great people, doing what we love to do every night.”

NINTENDO AND FORMER UO ATHLETE JORDAN KENT BRING ‘SUPER SMASH BROS.’ TO AUTZEN

Before the Oregon-Stanford football game on Saturday, Duck fans received a sneak preview of the upcoming “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo partnered with the Wendy’s College Tailgate Tour in order to bring a demo version of the much-anticipated fighting game to Autzen Stadium.

Jordan Kent, a University of Oregon alum and former wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks was also present at the event to promote “Ultimate” with the video game company. “To come here at Eugene and be a part of the first stop on the Tailgate tour was something I couldn’t pass up,” Kent said.

Earlier this year, Kent was inducted into the Oregon Athletics Hall of Fame. During his time as a student, he participated on the football, basketball and track teams, making him the first three-sport athlete at the UO since World War II. He now broadcasts for the Portland Trail Blazers, as well as Pac-12 football and basketball. It’s this

line of work that eventually led to his involvement with Nintendo.

Back in 2017, he joined the video game company at the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles as an emcee and commentator. In 2018, he again helped commentate for the “Super Smash Bros.” Invitational.

“Transitioning from sports to eSports didn’t really feel too different,” Kent said. “When it comes to eSports, depending on the game, it just feels like in general the action is much faster.”

Kent, who is an avid Nintendo fan himself, says he can appreciate the amount of skill that eSport athletes put into competitive gaming.

“I’ve really been impressed by the amount of dedication and focus on their craft,” Kent said. “You look at how much they have mastered these games and the amount of time it takes — it’s no different than [being a] football player. I’m spending hours honing a particular skill.”

Elements of “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” — the

fifth installment in the “Smash Bros.” franchise — will cater to the competitive nature of its fanbase.

Nintendo will release it Dec. 7. “It’s blending a lot of elements from ‘Melee’ [for Nintendo GameCube] and ‘Super Smash Brothers’ for Wii U,” Kent said. “I like the speed of this game.” e widespread appeal of “Smash Bros.” comes from its pick-up-and-play design, as well as its large cast of playable characters — drawn from a multitude of beloved Nintendo franchises.

At the demo event, classic characters such as Mario and Donkey Kong were available to play. But fans could also try out brand new characters in the “Smash” roster, such as Ridley from the “Metroid” series and Inkling from “Splatoon.” e early chance to play the game made for a constant line at the Nintendo booth near Autzen. e stop at Eugene marks the beginning of Nintendo’s College Tailgate tour, which will continue through November with stops around the country.

campaign tent was boisterous: music played, everyone danced and laughed and took photos. roughout the multi-week campaign, Gallegos-Chacón and other slate members engaged with students, listened to their thoughts and encouraged them to vote.

From behind her “grandpa-style,” wire-rimmed glasses framed by dark curls of hair, Gallegos-Chacón is approachable, but she’s direct and won’t sway from her goals.

She leads by example and uses her experiences to inform her politics.

“Her work ethic is amazing,” said Tan Perkins, ASUO chief of staff.

“She’s the person that’s out there tabling and is like ‘Hey, there’s too many people behind the table. Get out there,’ and then she goes out there, too.”

Despite receiving nearly 70 percent of the vote, GallegosChacón, a senior ethnic studies major, never expected to win.

“I was just really excited [when I won]. I was also in shock though because it didn’t feel right,” said Gallegos-Chacón, who didn’t see

herself as a leader in the past.

“I think my slate and my VPs deserved it more than anyone, more than myself.”

As ASUO president, GallegosChacón represents the university, oversees funding for student groups and advocates for the student body. is year, she plans on tackling major issues ranging from tuition increases and food insecurity to fighting discrimination on campus.

And for the first time in ASUO history, the executive team —

comprised of vice presidents Imani Dorsey and Ivan Chen, Perkins and Gallegos-Chacón — all openly identify as queer people of color. “ is is actually pretty historical,” Gallegos-Chacón said.

Ethan Shafer, a freshman who ran with Ducks Together and was elected to Senate, said that while campaigning, GallegosChacón “was not afraid to stand up for her constituents.” In the upcoming year, Shafer said, students can expect the same from their president.

“She was not afraid of what other people thought of her and her opinions but was there for her constituents and no one else, and that’s what I really admire about Maria,” he said.

As the daughter of Ecuadorian immigrants, Gallegos-Chacón came to the United States when she was 2 years old. She lived in Chicago until her early teens, then moved to Hillsboro, Oregon, where she said she struggled adjusting to the different culture.

“It was just shocking how white Oregon is,” she said.

Gallegos-Chacón said the transition from Chicago to Hillsboro was difficult because she was far from family and friends. She got in trouble for using Spanish slang in school.

She was a chatterbox. She started fights. She struggled to do well in school. And her mom called her peleona, meaning little fighter.

Gallegos-Chacón said she noticed she was different from most people in her new community because of her Latinx identity and felt the sting of microaggressions from peers and teachers, something she still faces on a regular basis.

In middle school, a substitute teacher once told GallegosChacón she’d be pregnant in high school because she was “boy crazy,” playing into stereotypes surrounding Latinx women.

Gallegos-Chacón said she internalized those comments about race and gender.

“I think it hurt me in a selfesteem way more than anything,” Gallegos-Chacón said. ings turned around for Gallegos-Chacon when Bill Huntzinger, her English teacher at Glencoe High School, introduced her to the ideologies of the Black Panthers and Malcolm X. She discovered an interest in discussing social equality.

“I was really interested in that aspect of racial justice, so that’s what got me into school and what got me intrigued to go to college,” she said.

Huntzinger encouraged Gallegos-Chacón to take classes like AP Government. Although she said she was never the best student, she remained dedicated to the schoolwork. “I think having two particular teachers who were invested in my writing and invested in my ideas as a queer woman of color was really helpful to me,” she said.

In addition to discovering a passion for learning about social justice, Gallegos-Chacón took on her first leadership role in high school. In her senior year, she was required to do community service after getting in trouble for something she no longer remembers. Rather than joining a community service club, she founded her own organization. As the director of the Environmental Impact Club, Gallegos-Chacón

Gallegos-Chacón said she’s not afraid to be persistent when campaigning for something she cares about. She uses her friendliness to her advantage when approaching strangers but has noticed some pushback, specifically from older white men, who she says don’t take her seriously.

While campaigning, people have badgered her about her height and age, rather than discussing a bill or petition with her. “I feel like a white man whisperer sometimes, and I’m okay with it,” said GallegosChacón, regarding her ability to reframe conversations to

realized she had a knack for leadership and activism.

“I really liked being in charge of something, setting agendas and putting events together, which is funny because I’m still doing that now,” she said.

Since graduating high school, Gallegos-Chacón has volunteered with Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group (OSPRIG) and interned with Organizing People, Activating Leaders (OPAL) Environmental Justice Oregon. With OPAL, she campaigned for a law that allows low-income individuals in Portland to get a free or reducedprice bus pass.

She also worked with Planned Parenthood to pass legislature to provide free reproductive health

Beatriz Gutierrez, a former ASUO president who worked with Gallegos-Chacón at OPAL Environmental Justice, said she learned from working with Gallegos-Chacón how “to be really intentional about the conversations that she had with folks and giving folks her whole attention.”

Gutierrez and Gallegos-Chacón got to know each other during their fellowship with OPAL, and Gutierrez has provided advice and support to Gallegos-Chacón throughout her campaign and presidency. She recalled a time when Gallegos-Chacón felt discriminated against while fundraising and wasn’t afraid to speak up about it. Gallegos-

Chacón is “unapologetic when she sees injustice,” said Gutierrez.

Andrew Rogers, formerly the Oregon Student Association campus organizer who worked with Gallegos-Chacón, said “something that stands out to me about Maria is she has a really good analysis of how power works in institutions.”

She listens to the issues students face on campus and finds the root of the problem, he said, and addresses them “in a productive way that’s going to hopefully get the results that students want that makes student lives better.” is year, the ASUO executive team plans to advocate for underrepresented student groups and alleviate injustice.

“We’re looking at campus more holistically while making sure that we are standing up for those marginalized folks,” said Perkins.

“We just want to make sure that every decision we’re making is going to affect the most people in the best way possible.” ough Gallegos-Chacón faces challenging tasks of fighting injustice, food insecurity and tuition increases, she said she is looking forward to the more light-hearted moments that make it worth it.

For her, some of those moments were the campaign days leading up to her election as president.

“Even before we won,” she said, “there were some really good times.”

And the good times were unexpected.

About 20 members of the Ducks Together slate gathered at Pegasus Pizza on April 12 to celebrate the end of campaigning while they awaited the results. e group filled several tables and enjoyed a spread of pepperoni, cheese and vegetarian pizzas.

Vice President Ivan Chen was first to receive the email congratulating the slate. Perkins didn’t want to get too excited, as the results seemed too good to be true. But, as the congratulatory emails stopped coming in, reality sank in that Ducks Together was victorious.

Gallegos-Chacón stepped outside to call her mother and collect herself. It had been raining all day in Eugene, but for those few moments, the sun shined through the clouds.

When her mom answered the phone, she said, “Oh no, what happened?”

Gallegos-Chacón responded, "No, ganamos, we won!"

BY LESLIE SELCER • TWITTER @LESLIKESTRASH ough it’s been six years since my dad first dropped me off at college, I still remember the feeling I had when he left. At first, excitement — here I was, officially on my own!

But then, a rush of overwhelming anxiety. Here I was, in a place I did not understand, surrounded by people I did not know, officially on my own as a 17-year-old.

Many students can relate to this feeling, but the first few weeks of school can be especially intense for those who are the first in their family to attend college. First-generation students are “often ill prepared for the rigors of college life” because they are struggling against “educational institutions that were not designed to serve them,” according to a New York Times news reporter. As the executive director of the University Innovation Alliance — a consortium dedicated to increasing student retention — put it, “ e reality is that if the institution is not designed around students, there are a series of booby traps that are unintentionally set that would trip up any student.”

When you have another marginalized identity that intersects with being first-generation (such as being low-income, or a student of color or a first- or second-generation immigrant student), navigating an education system designed to keep you out can become impossible.

For starters, social isolation is a big factor when surrounded by peers who cannot relate to your experiences. ose from low-income schools might be intimidated by peers who have a significant head start in AP, IB and concurrent enrollment credits. If you develop a distinct university personality as a way to assimilate, you might even start to feel like you are losing your own identity. Sometimes this creates a gap between family and friends from home who can’t relate to your new experiences.

In addition, many first-generation students perceive faculty members as anxiety-inducing authority figures. Unfamiliar university culture can create the feeling that everyone is working from some rulebook you never received. (An example? Going to office hours just to chat. Many students never do because they are afraid of “wasting” professors’ time.) Nepotism, unspoken expectations and lack of transparency around university politics present further challenges. ese hurdles add up. One UCLA study of 356 four-year institutions found that only 27.4 percent of first-generation students earn a degree in four years, as compared to 42.1 percent of students who have parents with bachelor’s degrees. In addition, 42.6 percent of white students received degrees as compared to 25.8 percent of Latinx students, 21 percent of black students and 16.8 percent of indigenous American students. Data from another 2015 study of pell grant recipients show that less than half of low-income students received a degree within six years, as compared to 67 percent of other students.

So, that’s the bad news. e good news? Many of us will still beat the odds if we have the right tools and a little luck.

Other first-generation students who have already graduated can offer indispensable firsthand advice and mentorship. For example, I found that the following strategies contributed most meaningfully to my success: 1) Find your people. is is the most important thing on this list because keeping yourself from feeling isolated is absolutely tantamount to your successful integration into the university. Many of us feel safer asking fellow first-generation students questions that might seem obvious to other peers, and that solidarity can be a wonderful stress relief.

First-generation students of color might find refuge in student unions such as the Black Student Union or the Asian and Pacific American Student Union. LGBTIA+ students have a variety of queer student organizations to choose from, and you can also find other first-generation students just by paying attention to the students in your classes.

2) Find a mentor. Here is a more difficult task, especially if you are nervous around professors like I am. In my experience, your best bet is asking other marginalized students about which university officials they feel comfortable around. ey can often point you in the direction of accessible faculty members or other university staff who are from similar backgrounds. Another method is to research and take classes in the humanities that are dedicated to topics of race, class, gender, and other markers of identity.

Many of the professors teaching courses in ethnic studies, women’s and gender studies, and even English will have firsthand experiences with the same collegiate hurdles you are facing.

ese mentors are indispensable sources of knowledge (and you will be thankful to have a few relationships with professors if you ever need letters of recommendation).

3) When in doubt, Google it. I know this one is a little obvious, but the power of Google to inform is often under-acknowledged. ere are tons of online message boards and guides concerning the first-generation experience, which can help you feel more prepared for the things you will experience as a student. I also suggest spending some time just browsing through your department’s website and the homepage of the university; familiarizing yourself with the structure of the institution will make life easier.

4) Take advantage of being first-gen! I received maybe a dozen different scholarships and grants throughout college that were based partially either on financial need or first-generation status.

Moreover, if you are working class, you will find a host of jobs on campus that are designed for students and can help pay the bills. Working as an RA often means free room and board, student jobs can be easier to get if you have work-study and summer gigs are always available on campus. With a combination of good grades, savvy budgeting and student jobs, I managed to secure enough funding to graduate with almost no student debt. It is hard work, but it can be done.

5) Call home. I cannot stress this enough. Stay connected to your family (chosen or biological) and your identity: they will be your anchors.

And with that last tip — happy first day of college!

TRUMP’S DENIAL OF PUERTO RICO DEATH TOLL IS DISGUSTING AND DANGEROUS

BY BAREERAH ZAFAR Nearly a year after hurricanes Maria and Irma, Puerto Rican officials revised the death toll from 64 to 2,975. President Donald Trump immediately dismissed this as false. To deny the hurricanes as the cause of death of nearly 3,000 brown Americans is to deny the government’s failure to its citizens.

Trump claimed in a tweet that deaths unrelated to the hurricane were added to this figure and conspired that this was the Democratic Party’s attempt to undermine his “relief efforts.” e death toll not only includes the number of people who died during the initial impact of the hurricanes, it includes those who died in the aftermath.

A study done by George Washington University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health explained how the death toll was calculated. eir research was reviewed by a “panel of national and international experts,” and they found that any natural death not caused by the hurricane was not included in the official number.

Some individuals in this statistic did die of natural causes, such as sickness, but this was a result of the lack of resources on the island after the hurricanes. For example, all of the patients in an intensive care unit died a few weeks after the hurricanes because there was no electricity to power the hospital. e hurricanes did not directly kill them but left them in conditions that made it difficult, and ultimately impossible, for them to survive. As such, it is appropriate to include them in the death toll.

I traveled to Puerto Rico last November with

Professor Alaí Reyes-Santos and two other students to provide food, water filtration systems, baby products and menstrual hygiene products.

We also documented the stories of the people affected by the hurricanes.

During our trip, we saw that much of the island still did not have electricity, and residents had little access to food, water and medicine. Almost everyone we interviewed said that government aid had been minimal or nonexistent, especially in rural regions where roads and bridges were destroyed.

Some people in these regions said that government aid could not reach them because of the damaged transportation routes. Our delegation was able to travel through the mountainous paths on a Toyota Rav 4 and a Jeep, so it’s hard to understand how military vehicles could not reach these families who had been stranded for weeks.

Due to the lack of government funds, the Puerto Rican community came together to clear the roads and cook for and look after one another. Various organizations gathered and distributed supplies to the regions that were the most inaccessible; however, these organizations did not have enough resources for everyone who needed help.

Brown American citizens are struggling to survive while Trump is gloating that, “Puerto Rico is an incredible, unsung success.” Whatever he did, it wasn’t enough.

In addition to his disrespectful comments, Trump moved $10 million from FEMA and filtered that money into the budget for Immigrations

and Customs Enforcement. He took away from organizations that could help save brown lives and gave it to an organization that separates brown families and puts brown children in cages.

It’s hard to comprehend that so many Americans are suffering and very little is being done to help them. However, given Trump’s attitude toward people of color, it is not surprising why he is so quick to deny just how critical the conditions in Puerto Rico are.

Ever since he entered the political field, the American public has been exposed to a new level of hatred for Latinx and Hispanic people. Trump has fueled a fear of these groups by blaming the country’s problems on brown immigrants. He spreads this ignorance under the guise of “putting America first.” His complete disregard for Puerto Ricans proves that his strategy is not about protecting the country. He simply does not care about anyone who is not white. e role of a government is to serve and provide for its people. Trump and his administration have failed us greatly. Many Puerto Ricans have lost everything, and they had very little to begin with. When human lives are destroyed, it should not matter who they are or where they are from. e fact that they are human beings should be enough for anyone to want to help. e lack of government involvement in relief efforts is disgusting and it is costing lives.

Americans need to continue to pay attention to the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico, help as much as they can and hold the government accountable for its disregard of U.S. citizens.

Oregon had many options with the clock winding down.

Ahead 31-28, the Ducks could kneel three times and punt the ball with roughly 15 seconds left in the game. ey could also run the ball and try get another first down and subsequently run out the clock. Oregon chose the latter. It all went wrong.

“First down, the game’s over,” head coach Mario Cristobal said.

“You could kneel it, but you’re going to have to punt the ball.”

Quarterback Justin Herbert handed the ball to redshirt freshman running back CJ Verdell for an eight yard gain. ey did it again. But, with 51 seconds left, the ball came loose and Stanford pounced.

“I love CJ and my players like my very own son and I told him that in the locker room,” Cristobal said. “He made a mistake. e ball got away from his body when it didn’t have to but no one’s going to point a finger at him.” e Cardinal marched down the field and hit a field goal with time expiring to send the game to overtime. e No. 7 Stanford Cardinal (4-0, 2-0 Pac-12) scored on their second play of overtime and No. 20 Oregon (1-3, 0-1 Pac-12) failed to respond as the Ducks collapsed in a 38-31 loss in front of a national TV audience. After a dominant first half culminating in a 24-7 halftime lead, Oregon lost control in the second half and lost the game.

With two minutes, 43 seconds left in the third quarter, things started to go Stanford’s way.

Oregon wide receiver Jaylon Redd had just crossed the goal-line for a touchdown but was called back to the 1-yard line after review. Two plays later, Oregon fumbled the ball and Stanford took it back from

the Ducks’ 20-yard line for a touchdown to make it a 24-14 game. e Ducks gave the ball back to Stanford just four plays later, and it took the Cardinal just over a minute to bring the game within three points via 2017 Heisman runner-up Bryce Love on a 22-yard touchdown.

Oregon had frustrated Love, limiting him to 89 total yards, and had a big stop to start the fourth quarter. On 4th and 1 on Oregon’s 30-yard line, the Ducks stuffed the Cardinal and scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive.

“All week that’s what the defense has been working on,” defensive lineman Jordon Scott said. “Not just stopping Bryce Love, but situations like 4th and 1 and 4th and inches when we really need big time plays and we got that but it wasn’t enough to win.”

While the defense felt disappointment in its performance, a bright spot for the Ducks remained their Heisman Trophy hopeful.

Herbert had an award-worthy outing, finishing with 26-for33 passing for 346 yards as he connected well with wide receiver Dillon Mitchell for 239 yards.

But their performances didn’t stop Stanford’s momentum. e majority of the 58,453 fans in attendance began to voice their displeasure after Redd’s touchdown was overturned. As Oregon lost in overtime, fans began to throw objects ranging from t-shirts and water bottles to prop penalty flags onto the field.

For the players, mood — and their focus — shifted quickly after the game too.

“We’ve got to wipe this game fast,” offensive lineman Shane Lemieux said. “I’m already thinking about Cal right now.”

DUCKS SQUANDER JUSTIN HERBERT’S SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCE ON NATIONAL STAGE

Stanford players yelled and screamed, running around with too much energy to channel. Within the chaos, ESPN’s sideline reporter Maria Taylor grabbed Stanford head coach David Shaw, running back Bryce Love and quarterback KJ Costello for the national postgame interview.

None of them played better than Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert. But, the Ducks lost the game, and with it they lost Herbert’s opportunity to have the national spotlight for his near-perfect game.

Herbert’s final stat line was 26-for-33 for 346 yards with one touchdown and interception, which was a tip at the end of the game. At one point, Herbert was 25-for-27 — historic efficiency.

He even finished with 25 rushing yards, but the other Ducks didn’t hold their end of the bargain.

“He was outstanding,” Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal said. “He really was.” is was Oregon’s first game in the primetime spotlight during Herbert’s career. College

GameDay was here, and the whole country was watching. Herbert shredded the Stanford defense early, and the country took notice of the quiet, under-the-radar Eugene native.

“It was a fun experience for sure to just be out there with the guys, and it was a great game, and unfortunately it didn’t bounce our way, but we’re not going to let that define us and we’ll be back at it this week,” Herbert said.

Oregon dominated early. e Ducks were beating Stanford at its own game. ey owned both lines of scrimmage early, and it seemed like Oregon was unstoppable on offense. But in the second half, the running game stalled. Oregon had 134 rushing yards in the first, but only 44 in the second half. Again, Herbert kept them in it.

Oregon’s Dillon Mitchell — who had an all-time Oregon receiver performance that will also go overshadowed — said it best. “ at’s the first NFL draft pick,” he said. “He’s going to come out there and do what he does every night.”

If Herbert does that every night, then Oregon

will have a great season. It’s the players around him that need to improve.

Redshirt junior Jake Hanson botched two snaps, one stalling Oregon’s drive and the Ducks settled for a field goal, while the other led to an 80-yard touchdown recovery by Joey Alfieri to give Stanford the momentum. e Oregon defense, and Herbert, kept Stanford at bay, and it looked like the Ducks had the victory. But, Cristobal’s questionable clock management led to a CJ Verdell fumble that gave Stanford the ball back. e Ducks paid the price for giving a top-10 team life.

Herbert still left his mark on the game, and the world took notice, but not before they talk about the Stanford comeback.

“We did everything we could to just give Stanford the game, and unfortunately things didn’t turn out the way we wanted to,” Herbert said. at is true, except from Herbert’s perspective, it shouldn’t be “we.”

NO. 12 OREGON VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS NO. 22 WASHINGTON STATE 3-2

Despite hitting .362 and only making 10 errors as a team on ursday, the Ducks hit just .181 and made 32 errors against the Cougars.

Although Oregon won, it wasn’t pretty. e Ducks hit under .230 the first four sets, forcing an uphill battle to win. In set five the Ducks turned it around and hit .286.

“We were successful because they passed great in the fifth set and they were able to execute,” head coach Matt Ulmer said. e fifth set perfectly summarized the rest of the match with a come-from-behind effort by the Ducks.

Oregon trailed 8-5, but went on to win 15-12.

senior outside hitter Lindsey Vander Weide turned it on, recording nine kills and an ace. Overall, Vander Weide had 22 kills, 28 digs, two blocks and eight errors.

“I thought Lindsey really stepped up,” Ulmer said.

“She’s been doing that for us for four years. It’s not always scoring. Her serve I thought was great. … She shut down their middles.

August Raskie assisted 16 times in the win-or-gohome fourth set (eight of them to Vander Weide), but none of them were bigger than the last one. With the score 24-23, Raskie assisted Brooke Van Sickle, who clinched the set with a kill and tied the match at two.

“I just kind of felt the groove,” Vander Weide said.

“August was setting me really well in that set. …

Everything was coming together.”

One set later, Van Sickle ended the match with her eighth kill.

Halfway through the second set, the Oregon

offense found some life. e Ducks hit .094 in the set, but were able to manufacture the 25 necessary points thanks to Ronika Stone. Stone had five kills, an ace, a block and an assist heading in the second. Heading into the break, Stone was lone Duck hitting over .300.

Overall, Stone had 16 kills.

Freshman libero Brooke Nuneviller’s 35 digs were the most by a Duck since 2015.

Nuneviller and Vander Weide’s defensive performances saved the team and Ulmer thinks it kept the team in the match.

“Individually, I thought Lindsey and Brooke played great,” Ulmer said. “We needed every one of those digs.” at was not the only milestone reached. In the third set, Oregon outside hitter Lindsey Vander Weide reached the 1,000 career digs club. Her 14th dig made her the first Duck since Liz Brenner to have 1,000 career digs, kills and points.
