The Anti-Resolution New Year

With the arrival of every new year we find ourselves motivated by the ever-looming and endlessly hungry idea of productivity.

We live in a culture that insists we find ways to raise the expectations we have for ourselves each year, to never stop doing. In 2023, I encourage you to stop the production cycle and just live. This could be as simple as turning off your alarm and letting yourself take that much-needed rest day, guilt-free. It could also mean accepting every day that you don’t need to make any changes and that happiness is not something that comes because we beg it to.

Some examples of anti-resolutions could be:

• I’m not going to let myself stress about eating healthy because I am trying my best.

• If I feel too tired to exercise, I will let myself rest.

• I will be forgiving of myself as I would to other people because I am a kind person.

• It is worth it to get coffee on the way to school because it brings me joy.

• I don’t have to take every opportunity that comes to me.

• I will take a night off of homework to spend with friends.

• I will focus on my happiness each day.

If this year is not going well, or even if the past few years have not gone well, there will be more years. Time passes, and there is no right way to use it wisely and no such thing as wasting it. When we start being hard on ourselves and are told that we must whittle ourselves into a perfectly productive, perfectly fit put-together person, we feel the stress of all the expectations that we inevitably don’t meet weighing us down.

Some things that you don’t have to do just because everyone else does:

• Start a new diet

• Sign up for a marathon

• Join a gym

• Throw away the holiday treats

• Spend extra time at work to get ahead

• Wake up earlier

If any of those things are bringing us joy, then, by all means, we should do them, but we should never feel like we are doing anything in comparison to someone else or with bad intentions. Loving ourselves and feeling happy with our lives does not come when we finally reach society’s idealized version of ourselves. The new New Year’s Resolution for 2023 is to ditch all the resolutions and enjoy ourselves without feeling the need to be better.

Some mindfulness practices to try when reflecting on 2022:

• Write a list of everything that you are grateful for

• Write a list of what you are proud that you accomplished last year

• Write a list of things that you like about yourself

Bundle Up

Oregon may not be known for its harsh winters but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t get cold. We’ve experienced a weird fall with 80oF weather and an unexpected lack of rain. The winter temperatures might catch some people off guard. It’s important to stay warm in the colder months so you don’t catch a cold. Here are a couple of tips so you don’t freeze this winter!

Layers

Layers are a must when you’re trying to stay warm. Don’t be the person walking around campus with a t-shirt and shorts. In general, I’d recommend wearing at least two layers on top. This varies for how warm you run but I’ve found that a t-shirt or long sleeve and a hoodie keep me warm enough when I’m walking from class to class. A puffer or jacket over an outfit is also a good choice for staying insulated.

Quality vs. Quantity

With winter clothes, quality is so important. Fast fashion clothes aren’t built to last and are generally thin and flimsy. Investing in some basics can go a long way and can be reused in multiple outfits. If money is the issue, check out some thrift stores. You can often discover quality, unique pieces. I also recommend keeping your eyes on particular items and stores to see when they have sales.

Accessories

Accessories aren’t just for show. Not only do they jazz up a look, but they can also be utilized to keep you warm. There are a variety of accessories that are perfect for the colder weather.

My personal favorite right now is scarves. I think they are so cute and underhyped. I can see scarves being really nice for people who have shorter hair or like having their hair up. They keep your neck warm and can be tied in a bunch of different ways to spice things up. There’s just something about being wrapped in a scarf that gives such a cozy vibe.

Hats are also a great way to accessorize in the winter. You can wear bucket hats, beanies, dad hats, and more. Around 7-10% of a person’s body heat leaves through their head. Hats keep that heat from escaping. I would also categorize earmuffs in the head accessories which are great for people like me whose ears freeze off whenever there’s wind.

Gloves or mittens keep your hands warm which I personally think are the most important to stay warm. My fingers get cold so fast and tucking them into my sleeves is just not good enough. I recommend looking for gloves that have touch-screen fingertip pads so you don’t have to take them off when you use your phone. Wearing clothes with pockets can also keep your hands warm to a degree but that means you can’t really use them while you’re out and about.

The great thing about these tips is that you can do whatever you want with them. There’s so much freedom when it comes to fashion. You don’t have to layer up the way that I do. You don’t have to wear a puffer to stay warm. My last suggestion is to be aware of your body. Only you know what your body needs and how warm you should dress.

Melting Worries Away at the Terwilliger Hot Springs

The phrase a new year, a new me has not stood the test of time. Every year optimism begins to bubble up as you think of all the ways you’ll improve. The gym will be swamped, friends will think twice before going out to eat, and you’ll definitely be consistent with a new hobby. Instead of setting expectations you might not make, focus on finding a new adventure.

Eugene is uniquely situated in the Willamette Valley. Drive an hour in any direction and you’ll be sure to stumble onto a natural wonder. The Terwilliger Hot Springs is one of those wonders.

As Highway 126 twists and turns, following the McKenzie river, skeletal trees draped in snow towers of the cars racing along the highway. When the scenic route through the Willamette National Forest is the only one, the hour-long drive goes in no time.

The Terwilliger Hot Springs may have one of the most picturesque parking lots. With views of the Cougar Reservoir and seemingly endless greenery, it is hard to look away. However, once you begin

walking to the trail, the Terwilliger Falls cascades down a steep ravine. The sound of the rushing water fills the area.

To get to the hot springs there is a half-mile hike into the forest. The chances of slipping are much higher in the winter especially if there is snow. Railings provide guidance throughout the way. This quick hike is not overly strenuous, but there are definitely some rolling hills.

At the springs, it is hard not to gasp. All worries melt away when there is something so striking right in front of you. In the winter, snowcovered trees tower above the springs, insulating them from any wind.

There are four pools, the warmest reaching about 105 degrees and the bottom pool is about 85. Alongside the pools, there is a small stream that runs parallel and offers cool relief to anyone who is overheating.

The Terwilliger Hot Springs will provide much-needed warmth in Oregon’s cold and gray winter. When everything around you is covered in snow, warm pools welcome you in. The steam thaws the snowy path

8

around these natural springs. Natural rock formations create waterfalls between each pool, bringing warm water to all. The sulfur-rich waters refresh your skin and can help ease any pain.

Kayla Krueger went on a day trip to the hot springs and said, “The drive is beautiful and you can really get away from the city and be in nature. The people that operate the hot springs are super nice, and the hike is short but worth it. The pools were so cool. There were multiple, which was nice to avoid overcrowding. Although it was snowy, the hot springs were super warm. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a day of relaxation and adventure.”

Before going to the Terwilliger Hot Springs there are a few important things to keep in mind. There is a 10-dollar entrance fee, this fee will be good for two hours. With a 50-person limit, lines develop during peak times. These times are often in the afternoon on weekends. Going early in the morning will give you better odds. Something to take note of is that this is a clothing-optional space. While many people do wear swimsuits, this is something to keep in mind, depending on your level

of comfort. Additionally, the springs are open from sunrise to sunset every day except Thursday.

As we enter the new year, take advantage of the free time you have. A trip to the hot springs can bring a sense of excitement as well as an opportunity to find peace. Set yourself up for success this year. New adventures can contribute to self-growth and develop connections. Take a day and spend it on yourself.

Journey to the Center of the Bar-muda Triangle...

If you’re not stopping at just one drink, then why stop at just one bar?

Decorating downtown Eugene is a wide assortment of dives all within convenient walking distance. While it’s worth exploring the whole area, three of Eugene’s most iconic standards are the Davis, Drake, and Jameson. They form the so-called “barmuda triangle” where memories and an indefinite amount of money can be lost forever. But, like, in a good way. Don’t like to drink? No pressure. Just going along for the ride and exploring the venues is guaranteed to be fun – or at least a fun people-watching experience. These bars each have their own distinct vibes and features to draw you in. Let us break it down for you.

The Davis - Classy

If you’re trying to hit all three bars in one go, The Davis is a great place to start. The ambiance here is impeccable from day to night. The Davis is one of Eugene’s nicest restaurants-slash-bars for fancy cocktails and delicate little plates of food. On weekend nights only, the restaurant turns into a dance club that’s open past midnight. This is your escapist destination to dress up nice and dance to hip-hop under pretty lights with your friends. Plus, you might actually enjoy the drink in your hand without having to plug your nose and pray.

The Drake - Classic

If you want a classic, no-frills bar with a party vibe, this is the place to go. This is the kind of place you could stay all night with plenty of options to keep you entertained and buzzed. There are pool tables, a big dance floor, darts, and often a large assortment of rowdy people ready to have a good time. They also have a stage so come on the weekends for standup comedy and DJs.

Jameson’s - Creative

There’s a buzz in the air at Jameson’s. The 70s-inspired interior is vibrant and artsy while being friendly and welcoming at the same time. The dark and cozy atmosphere usually draws a more laidback and conversational crowd, especially in winter. They also have trivia nights, pool tables, and a large selection of beers making it a great place to meet new people in a low-pressure environment. They recently celebrated their 18-year anniversary so you can assume they know their stuff.

Let it Glow!

The flurries of snow in Eugene can only mean one thing, Winter has officially arrived.

Since the time change of daylight savings, the days appear shorter and the nights feel so much longer. It’s easy to feel the effects of seasonal affective disorder with the 4 pm sunsets, but something sure to brighten your spirits and your decor is some warm lighting.

Whether it’s as simple as switching out a lamp bulb for a warmer glow or hanging up some twinkling lights, there are several ways to illuminate your day and night throughout winter!

One of my favorite ways to brighten up a space is by using string lights to add to the overall ambiance of the room. I love the warm glow that comes from being surrounded by small twinkling lights. Throw a video of a crackling fireplace onto your TV and you’ll have a toasty atmosphere no matter the outside temperature.

LED lights are also very popular and common in college dorms and apartments. They’re cheap and easy to set up, and offer a multitude of different colors and settings to fit your vibe! Throw a party with some colorful strobe lights or set the tone.

Curtain lights are another great option for adding some warmth to your space. Just hang them up on a nice big window in any room for some subtle flair.

Sunset lamps are a great source of warmth and comfort. They can prolong those early sunsets by keeping your room nice and lit, and are also known to help seasonal affective disorder. They can also give you that much needed boost of vitamin D to combat the cloudy skies and short days.

If all else fails, neon signs can be a great way to glow up your surroundings and add some character to your personal space. Illuminate a wall by hanging up an inspirational phrase, your name, or a fun symbol to match your vibe.

If you’re struggling to find stores to shop for these wonderful lights, I’ve got you covered! Target has a great selection of twinkling lights of all kinds that are affordable and great for any room! They also have a variety of outdoor lights for balconies, front porches, and windows that are great at lighting up those dark winter nights! Additionally, Amazon always has a wide variety of lamps and lights to fit your aesthetic needs.

Once you’ve hung up your preferred lights, you’re ready to let it glow all through the winter season!
