2009 season

REVIEW

The University of Oregon hadn’t taken the diamond in 28 years, but all that changed when the 2009 Duck baseball team walked onto the dirt at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga, Calif., under the watchful eye of legendary head coach George Horton on Feb. 20. With the stadium at Saint Mary’s spilling over with Oregon baseball fans and brewing with excitement for freshman Tyler Anderson to throw the game’s first pitch, Feb. 20, 2009 became a historical date in the reborn program’s history. While the 56-game season brought Oregon only 14 wins and adversities throughout the year, Oregon’s youthful squad persevered and laid the groundwork for the success that the future undoubtedly holds. On Feb. 20, 2009, Oregon left Saint Mary’s with a 5-3 victory in its possession. The Ducks came back from a deficit in the season opener and names like Drew Gagnier, Tyler Anderson, KC Serna and Danny Pulfer became constants for the next 55 games.

opening day, that PK Park was ready for the Ducks to begin spring practice. That’s why Oregon’s hot start, considering the team was laden with true freshman and JC transfers, was a pleasant surprise. The Ducks began the season with that promising 5-3 win at Saint Mary’s on opening day, and despite losing the series with the Gaels, then won their two following series against defending College World Series champion Fresno State and Santa Clara. Like the season opener in Moraga, the Ducks home opener and the christening of PK Park on Feb. 27, had the entire state of Oregon buzzing. In front of a sellout crowd, the Ducks and Bulldogs staged a pitching duel in what will unquestionably go down as one of the most exciting games to be played at the brand-new facility.

The Ducks struggles throughout the season were at the plate, as Oregon finished last in the Pac-10 batting .227. But Oregon had faced adversities since Day 1. With PK Park still in the building process, the Ducks played all of Fall Ball at high school fields and in Oregon’s indoor facility.

Fresno State’s Holden Sprague pitched 7 and 2/3 scoreless innings, while Anderson pitched eight shutout innings for the Ducks. Oregon lefty Ryan Fleckenstein allowed the Ducks to get out of the top of the ninth unscathed setting up Eddie Rodriguez’s two-out single to keep the game out of extra innings. Rodriguez moved to third on a full-count single from Jett Hart, and a pinch-hit walk-off single from senior Andrew Schmidt ended the game 1-0 in favor of Oregon as Rodriguez crossed the plate.

2009 SEASON REVIEW

2009 SEASON REVIEW the season, but for a young team, the Pac-10 schedule would prove to be too difficult to overcome. In addition to winning series with Fresno State (2-1) and Santa Clara (3-1), the Ducks split a series at Nevada (2-2) and a two-game tilt with Sacramento State (1-1), leaving the Ducks with an unexpected 10-13 record heading into Pac-10 play. For the Ducks, the untested squad had the dubious task of opening conference play against their fiercest rival, and a program that had won two national championships in the previous three years, Oregon State. Oregon dropped the first game at PK Park, but the final two games of the series were played at PGE Park in Portland, Ore., bringing out a combined 29,249 to watch the baseball version of the Civil War - including a Pac-10 record 15,540 spectators for a game that proved to be worth the wait. Delayed by rain, Oregon and Oregon State finally got the second game underway at PGE Park on March 28. With junior right-hander and the staff ace Erik Stavert on the mound, the Ducks had their best chance of coming out on top. In the bottom of the 10th, John Adamson’s walk-off single to deep right-center brought Caleb Tommasini across the plate and propelled Oregon to a 3-2 victory over Oregon State. The win also had another significance. It was the 500th Division I victory of George Horton’s career. Gagnier earned his first win of the season after pitching the final two innings of the game and holding Oregon State scoreless. The sophomore struck out the side in order in the top of the 10th to set up Adamson’s game winner, but it was Stavert holding the Beavers to one run in six and 2/3 innings that was the valiant effort for the evening. The night would prove to be one of a few brilliant performances by Stavert, who became the first of three Oregon players to be drafted in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. If there was one thing that kept Oregon within striking distance last year it was the Ducks’ pitching staff, in particular Stavert. The junior finished his season with a record of 5-6, a 3.04 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 94.2 innings pitched. Stavert was named Pac-10 honorable mention, and was drafted in the seventh round of the MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies. His other significant performances included tossing eight innings of two-run baseball and striking out eight, helping Oregon to its first Pac-10 victory on the road, a 5-3 win at California. He also led the Ducks to a 3-2 victory over UCLA, holding the Bruins to one run on six hits while striking out eight on May 1. Stavert was part of a pitching staff that had five true freshmen on the roster, including two in the starting rotation. The Ducks’ ERA of 5.07 ranked seventh in the Pac-10. In addition to Stavert, Oregon had redshirt sophomore Drew Gagnier to come in the game as the Ducks closer. Another all-Pac-10 honorable mention selection, Gagnier finished the season with seven saves, a 1-0 record and a 2.70 ERA. He was drafted in the 14th round of the 2009 MLB Draft, but chose to return to Eugene to further improve his stock. Other mainstays on the mound included Anderson, and freshman righthander Madison Boer. Freshmen Alex Keudell, Chris Garrison and Scott McGough also were on the mound as midweek starters and middle relief.

Eddie Rodriguez (left) and Danny Pulfer celebrate the Ducks 1-0 victory over #15 Fresno State. Oregon christened PK Park with the victory over the defending 2008 College World Series champions. It was Rodriguez who scored the game-winning run after keeping the ninth alive with a two-out single, eventually plating the game’s solo run on Andrew Schmidt’s pinch-hit, walk-off single.

2009 SEASON REVIEW

2010 OREGON BASEBALL

2009 SEASON REVIEW Injuries also plagued Oregon’s pitching staff as junior college transfers Zack Thornton and Justin LaTempa battled setbacks throughout the season along with freshman Joey Housey, leaving Ducks pitching staff shorthanded from the start.

role.

After starting the season 10-13, the Ducks finished last in the Pac-10 with a 4-23 record. Oregon’s offense struggled, and Horton tried to find the answer and the right combination using 48 different batting orders and 43 different defensive lineups during the season.

Rauliniatis led the Ducks hitting .291, while Tommasini provided speed on the base paths stealing a team-leading 16 bases. Hart was also quick with 10 stolen bases, and had two home runs, including the first of the reborn era.

The Ducks had true freshmen make at least 20 starts at five different positions, while two of the most demanding positions (third base and shortstop) always had a true freshman in the respective starting lineup. Those freshmen included Danny Pulfer and KC Serna. Pulfer made 21 starts at second base before moving over to third and finishing the year with 31 starts on the hot corner. Oregon’s only answer at shortstop was Serna, who made 48 starts in the hole. Serna hit .228 with 14 runs, five doubles, one triple, 14 walks and nine stolen bases. He led the team with 19 RBIs and three home runs, and defensively, led UO with 145 assists and 31 double plays turned. First base was a hard spot to fill for the Ducks with five different players taking a crack at the starting

The upperclassmen held onto most of the spots in the outfield with the trio Curtis Raulinaitis, Caleb Tommasini and Jett Hart making 33 starts together.

The Ducks used a variety of options at DH, as nine different players got the nod during the season, but Oregon was dealt its biggest blow on March 14 when junior catcher Eddie Rodriguez was lost with a knee injury. Rodriguez was unable to catch for the rest of the year, and attempted to play first base or DH the remainder of 2009, but was never able to get back to full health until the offseason. Despite playing in a temporary facility, and fielding a young team, Oregon fans proved the college baseball in Eugene was a popular idea. The Ducks played to three sellout crowds and averaged 2,404 fans per game. Looking ahead to 2010, PK Park now has a total ca-

pacity of 4,000, including 3,000 fixed seats, a tiered party plaza named “Fowl Territory”, a picnic plaza and eight upper level suites. Oregon’s newest facility is designed around a single, open concourse that provides incredible views to the entire playing field. Despite the Ducks 14-42 season, and 4-23 mark in the Pac-10, Oregon’s youthful roster provided exciting moments throughout the year with big wins on the road at Saint Mary’s, California and a 10-inning thriller against Oregon State in front of 15,540 in Portland, while also providing memorable moments at PK Park. The Ducks christened their new home with a 1-0 victory over the defending College World Series champion Fresno State Bulldogs, and also picked up Pac10 wins over Stanford and UCLA. Oregon continues the building process by bringing in back-to-back top-25 recruiting classes. The Ducks are ensured to have another young starting crew on the diamond this season with youngsters and newcomers like J.J. Altobelli, Ryan Hambright, Christian Jones, Stephen Kaupang, Jack Marder, Andrew Mendenhall, Steven Packard and Marcus Piazzisi waiting to emerge.

Now 100 percent healthy, senior right-hander Zack Thornton (far left) is expected to earn a role in the starting rotation. Senior Curtis Raulinaitis (center) is expected to start in the outfield once again patrolling right field. Junior closer Drew Gagnier was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award Watch List. 4

Tyler Anderson was on the mound for two of the most historic games in Oregon baseball history. On opening day at Saint Mary’s, Anderson tossed 5 and 2/3 innings in the Ducks 5-3 victory. A week later, Anderson pitched a career-high eight innings of shutout baseball against defending national champion and 15thranked Fresno State as Oregon went on to win 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth.

He allowed one run on five hits, walked two and struck out seven to give Nevada (6-10) a series split...Righty Sammy Miller recorded the final six outs to earn his third save... Boer (1-2) went the distance for the Ducks (8-8), surrendering six hits and two walks while allowing single runs in the first and sixth innings. He struck out four in his team-high second complete game of the year, lowering his earned run average to 2.84 in the process...UNR scratched for the eventual winning run in the sixth, taking advantage of a leadoff single by Brock Stassi, a fielder’s choice and a wild pitch to move the runner around to third base.
