Season Review
2012 Recap Oregon’s first season under head coach Robert Johnson proved to be a monumental one as the Women of Oregon won the NCAA title for the first time in 25 years and captured Pac-12 and West Regional crowns along the way. The men bounced back as well, returning to the NCAA Championships after missing out in 2011.
Bill Dellinger Invitational Senior transfer Alexi Pappas led the Oregon women to the Dellinger team title, while senior transfer Trevor Dunbar captured the men’s individual title on a warm and sunny Sept. 29 at Springfield Country Club. Pappas pushed through the finish line to finish just ahead of former Washington runner Christine Babcock. Pappas’ time of 16:23 was the second-fastest in Dellinger meet history and less than a second off the meet record of 16:22.92 set by NCAA Champion Sheila Reid of Villanova in 2009. Dunbar, a senior transfer from the University of Portland, brought home the men’s title in 23:38.

Pappas, a transfer from Dartmouth led a 1-3-5-6-7 finish for the Ducks as No. 3 Oregon easily won their third straight Dellinger team title with 18 points. Southern Utah was second with 73, Gonzaga finished third with 87, UC Riverside was fourth with 98 points and Idaho scored 125 points to round out the top five. Nevada was sixth with 135 points and Seattle U. was seventh with 203. In addition to Pappas, the women had freshman Annie Leblanc third in 16:59, senior Sarah Penney fifth in 17:02, senior Katie Conlon sixth in 17:03 and senior Jordan Hasay seventh in 17:04. Oregon also saw sophomore Megan Patrignelli 10th in 17:10, freshman Abbey Leonardi 12th in 17:13, senior Becca Friday 17th in 17:28, senior Taylor Wallace 19th in 17:33 and senior Anne Kesselring 23rd in 17:38. Meanwhile Dunbar led an entertaining men’s race that saw the 23rd-ranked Ducks challenge No. 3 Brigham Young throughout. With a lap remaining, both teams had four runners in the top 10, and it wasn’t until the final 1,000 meters that the Cougars edged ahead to claim their first Dellinger crown. BYU scored 32 points to win, followed by Oregon with 49, Southern Utah with 111, Washington with 114 and Gonzaga with 130. Seattle U. was sixth with 181 points, followed by Sacramento State (185), Massachusetts (223), UC Riverside (233) and Idaho (240). Dunbar, from Kodiak, Alaska, won for the Ducks with junior Ben Dejarnette third in 23:49. BYU was impressive with Jared Ward second in 23:40 to lead eight Cougars who finished in the top 15. Oregon also counted an 11th-place finish from junior Parker Stinson in 24:00, a 16th-place finish from sophomore Cole Watson in 24:07 and a 22nd-place finish from sophomore Daniel Winn in 24:25. The Ducks had freshman Matthew Melancon finish 26th in 24:29 in his first race as a Duck, sophomore Ryan Pickering 29th in 24.33 and freshman Chris Brewer 40th in 24:49.
Pac-12 Championships Jordan Hasay’s runner-up finish led the third-ranked Oregon women to the 2012 Pac-12 cross country championship on a windy Oct. 27 at Robinson Ranch Golf Course. The eighth-ranked men took third. The Ducks placed three runners in the top five and seven in the top 24 to win their first women’s title since 1995, and the eighth in school history. Oregon won with 47 points, followed by No. 5 Arizona with 69, No. 4 Stanford with 82, No. 6 Washington with 92, No. 21 Colorado with 124 and No. 24 UCLA with 172.
Alexi Pappas
Hasay added to her impressive Pac-12 resume with Saturday’s runner-up finish in 20:10. The senior from Arroyo Grande, Calif., won this race as a sophomore in 2010 and was third a year ago. Alexi Pappas, a senior transfer from Dartmouth, was fourth in 20:11, while freshman Allie Woodward was fifth in 20:16. The Ducks also counted freshman Annie Leblanc’s 17th-place showing in 20:42 and senior Sarah Penney’s 19th-place finish in 20:47. For good measure, Oregon also had senior Katie Conlon 23rd in 20:58 and freshman Abbey Leonardi 24th in 21:03, giving the Ducks seven runners in the top 25. Stanford’s Kathy Kroeger was the individual winner in 20:06. Meanwhile for the men, Trevor Dunbar and Parker Stinson paced the Ducks to a third-place finish by taking third and fourth, respectively. Dunbar, the senior from Kodiak, Alaska, and Stinson, a junior from Austin, Texas, both timed 23:28. Second-ranked Colorado successfully defended its Pac-12 title with 49 points. No. 3 Stanford was second with 82, followed by Oregon with 105, Arizona State with 105 and No. 15 UCLA with 113. Oregon also counted a 31st place finish from freshman Matthew Melancon. The Eugene, Ore., native finished in 24:19. Additionally, the men had a 32nd place finish from sophomore Ryan Pickering in 24:22 and a 39th place showing from sophomore Cole Watson. The Rogue River, Ore., runner clocked 25:03. Arizona’s Lawi Lalang won the individual title in 22:49 with his teammate Stephen Sambu second in 22:50.

Season Review NCAA West Regional Jordan Hasay won her third straight NCAA West Regional crown to lead the third-ranked Oregon women to their first West Region title since 1995 Nov. 9 in Seattle. More importantly both the men’s and women’s teams qualified for the NCAA Championships. The women received an automatic bid by virtue of their win, while the men were extended an at-large bid. In the women’s race,Hasay broke away from Cal Poly’s Laura Hollander and Stanford’s Kathy Kroeger with 600 meters remaining to earn her first victory of 2012. The senior from Arroyo Grande, Calif., won in 19:16. Hollander was next in 19:22 with Kroeger, the Pac-12 champion, third in 19:27 over the 6,000 meter course. Hasay became the first Duck to win three straight regional crowns, but that was only half the story for the women. She was one of three Oregon runners to finish in the top 10, and one of six in the top 26 as the Ducks held off challenges from No. 4 Arizona, No. 5 Stanford and No. 7 Washington. The Ducks won with 64 points. The Cardinal and Wildcats tied for second with 85 points, while the Huskies took fifth with 96 points. Freshman Allie Woodward backed Hasay’s win with a seventh-place finish in 19:52. That was followed by senior Alexi Pappas’ 10th-place showing in 19:54. Oregon’s next group also ran well together with senior Sarah Penney 22nd in 20:13, freshman Annie Leblanc 24th in 20:15 and senior Katie Conlon 26th in 20:17. Oregon also saw freshman Abbey Leonardi 34th in 20:36. The Ducks led from the outset of the race. After 2,000 meters, the Ducks were 17 points up on Washington and 34 ahead of Arizona. At the midway point, Oregon opened up a 23-point margin on Washington and led Arizona by 25. Stanford made a big move with 1,000 meters remaining to pull ahead of Arizona and Washington, but Oregon maintained a comfortable 24-point edge on the Cardinal and a 25-point lead over the Wildcats. The margin never slipped below 20 over the final 1,000 meters. It was the women’s 13th NCAA West Regional victory, which now only trails Stanford by one, but was the Ducks’ first in 17 years.

Meanwhile, Trevor Dunbar led the men with his third-place individual finish. No. 3 Stanford was strong throughout and won easily with 45 points. The team battle behind the Cardinal ebbed and flowed over the course of the 10,000 meter race. Oregon was second after 2,000 meters and then third, behind Stanford and No. 25 Arizona State, at 4,000 and 6,000 meters. The 11th-ranked Ducks were then able to pass ASU over the next 2,000 meters, but at the same time, No. 9 Portland made its move to forge ahead of Oregon into second. No. 27 UCLA then overtook the Ducks on the final lap as Oregon wound up fourth. The Pilots finished with 107 points, followed by UCLA with 128 and the Ducks with 135. Washington was fifth with 165 points, followed by ASU with 218. Dunbar, a senior from Kodiak, Alaska, was impressive in his third-place finish. He chased Arizona’s outstanding duo of Lawi Lalang and Stephen Sambu the entire race before Lalang pulled away to win in 29:02. Sambu was second in 29:38, with Dunbar crossing the finish line next in 29:43, just a second faster than Stanford’s Joe Roda (29:44). The Ducks also received a strong performance from junior Parker Stinson. The Austin, Texas, native was seventh in 29:53. Oregon also had sophomore Jeramy Elkaim 32nd in 30:25, with Matthew Melancon, a freshman from Eugene, Ore., right with in 33rd, also timing 30:25. Sophomore Ryan Pickering’s 60th place finish in 30:42 was the Ducks’ final scorer.
NCAA Championships Led by a courageous effort by seniors Jordan Hasay, Alexi Pappas and Katie Conlon, the Women of Oregon captured their first NCAA cross country national title since 1987 last November in Louisville’s E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. Hasay led an impressive pack of Ducks who were in the race’s top 50 nearly the entire 6,000 meter distance. Oregon ended up winning easily with 114 points, followed by Providence with 183, Stanford with 198 and Florida State with 202.

Hasay looked strong in the lead pack throughout, only falling to Iowa State’s Betsy Saina and Abbey D’Agostino of Dartmouth at the tape. After a sprint to the finish, Saina was the 2012 individual champion in 19:27.9, followed by D’Agostino and Hasay both in 19:28.6. Hasay, from Arroyo Gande, Calif., willed her teammates around the course in impressive fashion. Pappas, a transfer from Dartmouth, ran just a step off the lead pack the entire race, and finished eighth in 19:43.9. Conlon was the surprise of the day for the Ducks. The transfer from NAIA Jamestown College in North Dakota had been the Ducks’ fifth or sixth runner during the regular season, but put on a strong kick over the final third of the race, passing a couple dozen runners to place 39th in 20:15.0. Then it was freshman Allie Woodward coming to the line as Oregon’s fourth runner. The Green Bay, Wis., native was 44th overall in 20:19.5. Freshman Annie Leblanc capped the scoring for the Ducks, finishing 68th in 20:31.5. Oregon also had senior Sarah Penney 105th in 20:50.7 and freshman Abbey Leonardi 162nd in 21:12.2. It was the third NCAA women’s cross country title in school history. The other came in 1987 and 1983 under coach Tom Heinonen. The men of Oregon had some ups and downs in their return to the NCAA meet after missing the Championships in 2011. The Ducks took 20th with 472 points. Oklahoma State won with 72 points, followed by Wisconsin with 135 and Colorado with 158. Senior Trevor Dunbar was the Ducks’ top finisher, taking 41st in 30:04.8. Freshman Matthew Melancon from Eugene had a strong first run at the NCAA meet, placing 97th in 30:41.2. Oregon also had Ryan Pickering 144th in 31:04.3, Ben DeJarnette 154th in 31:07.9 and Jeramy Elkaim 159th in 31:12.2.
