There is also a national television broadcast booth, a home coaches booth, a visiting coaches booth, an instant replay booth, an officials booth, a scoreboard and PA control booth, a stats booth and four radio booths. University of Phoenix Stadium played host to its first college football games in 2007 with the 36th Annual Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and the inaugural Tostitos BCS National Championship Game. The state-of-the-art stadium was showcased to millions as they watched history being made, with Boise State’s trick plays hoisting them over Big 12 Conference champion Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and Florida defeating Ohio State in the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game. Named one of the world’s 10 most impressive sports structures/stadiums by BusinessWeek, the exterior design of the stadium was provided by renowned architect Peter Eisenman, along with HOK Sport. The basic form of the design takes its cue from a barrel cactus and offers alternating vertical slots with smooth panels. The stadium was constructed with a retractable roof containing two large panels that retract to uncover the entire playing field. It also features a rollout field consisting of a 160,000 square-foot concrete stadium floor with an embedded utility grid. The natural grass field remains in a retractable, 18.9 million pound tray outside the stadium until game day for maximum sun exposure and nourishment. The tray takes approximately 70 minutes to move inside the Stadium and rests in a tray atop 13 rail tracks as it rolls out on 546 steel wheel assemblies powered by 76 one-horsepower motors. The stadium has permanent seating for 63,400, but expands to hold approximately 73,000 for events such as the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. A total of 88 luxury suites on two levels, club seating for 7,400 with access to private club lounge areas, lower bowl seating for 29,000 and upper deck seating for approximately 26,000 accommodate patrons. All seats are individual chairs with arm rests and cup holders. information courtesy of www.fiestabowl.org

Head Coach Chip Kelly In his first season as Head Coach, Chip Kelly led the Ducks to their
first outright PAC-10 Conference Title and a trip to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1995. In only his second season, Kelly has done what no Oregon team has ever accomplished; finish a regular season undefeated and lead his team to a National Championship Game. Repeating his motto from the first day of spring practice, “Win The Day” Kelly and his team have not wavered, and executed every game as the biggest of the year. The focus and determination of this Duck team became obvious as the year progressed. Opponent after opponent took shots at the PAC leader, but this steadfast teacher never panicked, never strayed from his gameplan, and never gave up. Before the final drive at Strawberry Canyon in Berekely, Kelly gathered his team and told them the drive they were about to complete would be one they told their children about. In what would be a defining moment of the regular season, Kelly’s Offense would march down the field for more than nine minutes to seal what was the closest margin of victory in his career as head coach.
Kelly’s Resume • 2010 Walter Camp Coach of the Year
• Back-to-back PAC-10 Titles
• 2010 AP Coach of the Year
• 1st PAC-10 Coach to lead his team to consecutive conference titles in first two seasons as head coach
• 2010 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year • 2010 National Coach of the Year (Sporting News)
• First Oregon coach to lead his team to back-toback BCS Bowls
• 2010 Paul “Bear” Bryant Award Finalist
• 22-3 Overall head coaching record at Oregon
• 2010 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Finalist
• Achieved first ever #1 ranking for an Oregon Ducks Football team
• Back-to-back PAC-10 Coach of the Year

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Kenjon Barner replaced the suspended running back for the 11th-ranked Ducks and ran for a career-high 147-yards and four touchdowns before catching another score as Oregon opened the season with a 72-0 rout of New Mexico on Saturday.

Oregon’s point total tied the Autzen Stadium record the Ducks set in 1999 against Nevada. The most points Oregon has ever scored is 115, against Puget Sound back in 1910. Quarterback Darron Thomas, making his debut as the Oregon starter, completed 13 of 23 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns.

James ran for 134-yards, including a 72-yard touchdown, in his first game back after a onegame suspension, and No. 7 Oregon scored 45 consecutive points to beat Tennessee 48-13 on Saturday night. The Pac-10’s leading returning rusher had only 27-yards at halftime after being targeted by the Volunteers’ defense for the entire first half. He rushed for 25-yards on five carries in the Oregon’s first second-half drive and then broke several tackles on the 72-yard touchdown run on the first play of the subsequent drive for the Ducks (2-0). Tennessee (1-1) went up 13-3 in the first half after an hour-long delay for lightning but fell apart after James’ long run.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- LaMichael James was disappointed. Even with a career-high 227-yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns in No. 5 Oregon’s easy 69-0 defeat of Portland State, James thought his play lacked something. In fact, he dramatically - OK, maybe overly so - called it ``the worst game I’ve ever played in my life.’’
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- The air let out of its pounding running game, No. 5 Oregon switched gears to a big-play passing offense.
Maybe it was because he wasn’t challenged from the start, when he ran untouched for 66-yards into the end zone. James went on to help Oregon amass 528-yards on the ground, surpassing the school record 465 set at Washington in 2007. It was James’ first game with more than 200-yards, and he did it all before halftime. The Ducks (3-0) sat most of their starters after the first half to give the reserves some work before Oregon visits Arizona State to open Pac-10 play next weekend.

That shrink-the-field defense? No adjustment needed there. Darron Thomas threw for 260-yards and two scores, and Oregon forced seven turnovers to pull away in the second half for a 42-31 win over Arizona State Saturday night in the Pac-10 opener for both teams. Arizona State (2-2) held the nation’s secondleading rushing team to 145-yards - 235 below its average - and used its up-tempo offense to build a 10-point lead late in a first half. Oregon (4-0) rallied behind Thomas’ arm, scoring two touchdowns in the final 2:21 and blowing it open with two more scores in the third quarter.

Running Back LaMichael James
October 2, 2010
October 9, 2010
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Swarmed by fans after he led No. 4 Oregon to victory over No. 9 Stanford, Darron Thomas surveyed the chaotic scene and quietly smiled.
PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) -- Every time LaMichael James took the ball, he wasn’t thinking of the end zone he so often visits.
Thomas contributed in a big way by throwing for 238 yards and three touchdowns, and running for 117 yards and another score in Oregon’s come-from-behind 52-31 win. His calm in the storm of the postgame celebration was typical of the sophomore quarterback, who never seems to get rattled. ``Coach just preached finishing,’’ he said. ``So we came out and finished.’’
He was thinking of his Oregon teammate Kenjon Barner and the sight of Barner being taken off the field in an ambulance. ``Every play I did, Kenjon was in my mind,’’ James said. James scored three touchdowns, including an 84-yard scoring reception, and No. 3 Oregon shook Washington State in the second half for a 43-23 win on Saturday.
The Ducks (5-0, 2-0 Pac-10) fell behind 21-3 in the first quarter of the frenzied game, but forced two crucial turnovers and held the Cardinal scoreless in the second half. LaMichael James ran for a career-high 257-yards and three touchdowns.
But this wasn’t the blowout most expected. And whether it was the lingering image of Barner being taken to the hospital following a scary collision or the improvement of Washington State, the Ducks made just enough plays to hold off the pesky Cougars.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- None of the top-ranked Oregon Ducks were congratulating themselves after dismantling UCLA, so Bruins coach Rick Neuheisel did it for them.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Southern California really thought it had figured out how to stop Oregon’s high-octane offense when the Trojans took a third-quarter lead on the nation’s top-ranked team.
``That was impressive,’’ Neuheisel said. ``I’ll leave it at that. That was impressive.’’ Oregon, celebrating it’s first outing ever at No. 1, beat the Bruins 60-13 on Thursday night. Darron Thomas threw for a career-high 308-yards and three touchdowns and Oregon stopped a run of losses for top-ranked teams. Alabama lost to South Carolina two weekends ago and Ohio State lost at Wisconsin last week. LaMichael James, the nation’s top rusher, finished with 123-yards and two TDs on the ground for Oregon (7-0, 4-0) after spending part of the first quarter on the sideline with an apparent injury. Reserve Remene Alston ran for three scores.

Turns out the Ducks were only pausing on the way to another convincing win. LaMichael James rushed for 239-yards and three touchdowns, Darron Thomas threw three of his four scoring passes to Jeff Maehl and No. 1 Oregon roared back from a second-half deficit with a 53-32 victory over the 24th-ranked Trojans on Saturday night. Thomas passed for 288-yards and Maehl had eight catches for a career-high 145-yards for the fleet-footed Ducks (8-0, 4-0 Pac-10), who racked up 599 total yards in yet another barnburning offensive performance. Oregon still trailed in the third quarter for just the second time all season after USC scored two touchdowns in 2 1/2 minutes to take a 32-29 lead.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Running back LaMichael James felt it, and so did the rest of the topranked Ducks. There was something inexplicably amiss at the start of Oregon’s 53-16 victory over northwest rival Washington on Saturday. Something completely out of character for the nation’s most prolific offense. ``I don’t know, it was something. We weren’t really playing up to standards the first two quarters,’’ said James. ``Our tempo wasn’t good, I was having some mishaps and other players were having some mishaps. Sometimes you’re going to have those games.’’ The Ducks (9-0, 6-0 Pac-10) were held scoreless in the first quarter for the first time this season. Their first points came on a 29-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- Oregon’s sturdy defense loved the chance to demonstrate that the Ducks’ offense isn’t the only star of this show. Jeff Maehl caught a 29-yard pass for the Ducks’ only offensive touchdown, and No. 1 Oregon caught a huge break on an illegal motion penalty against California’s kicker during a 15-13 victory on Saturday night, keeping the Ducks on course for the BCS title game. Cliff Harris returned a punt 64-yards for the only touchdown in the first half for the Ducks (10-0, 7-0 Pac-10), who undeniably wobbled on the road to a shot at the national championship. Oregon’s offense managed a season-low 317-yards and went scoreless in two quarters - yet the defense largely shut down Cal after its opening drive.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Now the Ducks can have their turkey. Oregon coach Chip Kelly said earlier this week he didn’t want his top-ranked team to partake in the traditional Thanksgiving meal because it might make them lethargic against No. 20 Arizona. The Ducks were anything but sedentary on Friday night with a 48-29 victory over the Wildcats. Oregon earned at least a share of its second-straight Pac-10 title and stayed on course for a trip to the BCS national championship game. Darron Thomas passed for 148 yards and three scores and ran for another, while running back LaMichael James ran for 126 yards and two scores for the Ducks (11-0, 8-0), who trailed 19-14 at halftime.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Along with all that flash and dash and those snazzy uniforms, No. 1 Oregon will bring a hefty dose of good oldfashioned grit to the BCS national title game. Heisman Trophy contender LaMichael James, Kenjon Barner and the fast-paced Ducks negotiated the last speed bump on the way to Glendale, Ariz., grinding out a 37-20 victory against Oregon State in the Civil War on Saturday. James ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns while Barner had 133 yards and scored twice for the Ducks (12-0, 9-0 Pac-10), who used some stiff defense in the red zone and three interceptions to fend off their feisty rivals. Not until the fourth quarter did Oregon finally shake free. Barner’s 23-yard touchdown run with 12:16 made it 30-13 and James popped through the middle for a 10-yard score with 4:27 left to seal it.
