season REVIEW 2012 MLB DRAFT Sophomore Aaron Jones, junior Joey Housey and senior Alex Keudell were each selected in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft . Jones was the first Duck chosen, selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 18th round as the No. 558 overall pick. Housey was drafted in the 27th round (No. 832 overall) by the Cincinnati Reds. Keudell was also selected in the 27th round (No. 842 overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays.

SEASON WRAP UP Kent State’s Jimmy Rider drove in the winning run with a shallow pop fly that landed just inside the left-field foul line in the bottom of the ninth, lifting the Golden Flashes to a 3-2 win over Oregon on June 11, sending Kent State to the College World Series and ending the Ducks’ record-breaking season. The University of Oregon made its fourth overall postseason appearance and its second since the program was reinstated (2009) when the Ducks claimed a No. 5 national seed for the 66th annual NCAA Division I Baseball Championship after finishing the regular season with a record of 42-17. The Ducks’ No. 5 national seed was the club’s

first in program history, and Oregon returned to the NCAA Tournament after appearing in the Norwich Regional in 2010. For the first time in its short four-year history, PK Park hosted its first postseason events as Eugene was home to the Regional and Super Regionals. The No.1 seed in the Eugene Regional bracket, Oregon needed two runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat No. 4 seed Austin Peay, 6-5, on June 1. UO then returned to the field on June 2, and edged 12th-ranked Cal State Fullerton, 7-5, for the right to play in the Regional championship. Oregon earned the right to host a Super Regional by defeating Austin Peay, 8-1, on June 3. Entering the postseason, Oregon had posted a 16-5 record in one-run games, and the Ducks’ final three games against Kent State were each one-run finishes. The Golden Flashes were able to win two-of-three at PK Park as their 7-6 win in the opener on June 9 snapped UO’s 14-game winning streak at PK Park. On June 10, the Ducks evened the Super Regional and snapped Kent State’s 21-game win streak with a 3-2 victory at PK Park. The Golden Flashes were then victorious, 3-2, in the third and final game. Oregon’s postseason run was not predicted as the Ducks were picked to finish seventh in

2012 SEASON REVIEW the 2012 Pac-12 Baseball Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Oregon ended the year with a 46-19 record - the most wins in program history - and the Ducks ended the year third in the Pac-12 standings with a 19-11 league record. Prior to 2012, Oregon baseball had last hosted a postseason event when the NCAA Western Regionals were played at Howe Field. The Ducks defeated Seattle, 9-4, and Fresno State, 9-5 and 1-0, for the right to move on to the 1954 College World Series.

RANKINGS After beginning the season unranked, the Ducks finished the year ranked in all five national polls, and rested at No. 11 in the Baseball America Top-25 poll. Oregon was ranked as high as No. 5 in 2012. 2012 SCHEDULE Oregon ended the year ranked sixth in the NCAA RPI ratings. In addition, Oregon’s 2012 schedule was ranked the fifth strongest in the country according boydsworld.com, while boydsworld.com rated Oregon’s RPI at seven. PAC-12 ALL-CONFERENCE Oregon senior right-hander Alex Keudell was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year following a vote by the conference coaches. Keudell, who was named one of 30 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, served as the Friday-night starter for the 10th-ranked Ducks all season. Along with Keudell, teammate Jimmie Sherfy was named to the Pac-12 All-Conference team, while sophomores Aaron Jones and Ryon Healy earned honorable mention accolades. Keudell was the first Oregon pitcher to receive the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year Award, and since the UO baseball team was reinstated (2009) the Ducks have received five all-conference honors with an additional 13 players earning honorable mention recognition. With an 11-5 record in 2012, Keudell set the new Oregon single-season win record. His 23 career wins tie for first all-time at Oregon while his 124.2 innings pitched in 2012 is a new UO single-season record. Keudell’s 2.38 ERA ranked fifth in the Pac-12 , and his 11 wins tied for fourth. In conference games only, the Portland, Ore., native led all pitchers with an 8-2 record and his 2.14 ERA ranks fourth. He also pitched the first complete-game shutout of his career, as Oregon defeated then 14th-ranked Arizona State 1-0 on March 31. The Ducks shut out ASU for the first time in series history as he allowed just four hits and issued two walks, while helping his cause by picking off two runners. Sherfy, who was chosen to compete on the 2012 Collegiate National Team, led the Pac-12 with 19 saves, a new Oregon single-season record. The sophomore right-hander has made 36 appearances, and in 61.1 innings pitched struck out 93 batters – an average of 13.6 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. A native of Camarillo, Calif., Sherfy finished with a 2.20 ERA and a 5-3 record, while holding opposing batters to a .172 clip. He was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Watch List. He helped Oregon to a sweep of Arizona State, earning two saves in three games. He was also named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week after striking out 13 in relief on Feb. 18, tossing 5.2 shutout innings at Hawaii as the Ducks prevailed 3-2. During a nine-game win streak from May 6-23, Sherfy tossed 11.2 shutout innings in seven appearances, earning five saves and one victory while fanning 21 batters. Jones just missed leading the team in RBI for the second consecutive year finishing with 39, three behind Healy., a total that ties for seventh in Oregon single season history. The junior outfielder finished the season batting .303

• Joey Housey was named to the 2012 Pac-12 Conference All-Academic team, earning his third straight all-academic recognition. nine-game hitting streak (May 12-26), led Oregon to a 7-2 record, batting .412, and driving in five runs with a double and home run. Healy, Oregon’s starting first baseman, led the Ducks with 79 hits, a total that tied for second in Oregon single-season history. The native of West Hills, Calif., batted .312 on the season and drove in a team-high 42 runs with 13 doubles, one triple and four home runs. Healy also led the club with 23 multiple-hit games, and his 12-game hitting streak to end the season, the longest of any UO player in 2012. During that stretch he batted .400 and drove in a 10 runs.

ALL-ACADEMIC Redshirt junior Joey Housey and sophomore Aaron Payne were named to the 2012 Pac-12 Conference Baseball All-Academic teams. To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or

Payne was a first-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection. Sophomore Ryon Healy and senior Kevin Shepherd were each named honorable mention. GEORGE HORTON During the 2012 season, George Horton led Oregon to its first Super Regional since the program was reinstated for the 2009 season. In his 15th season as a head coach at the Division I level, Horton recorded his ninth 40-win season as Oregon finished the year 46-19 - the program’s most wins in history. UO’s .708 winning percentage was also the best for the program since Don Kirsch’s 1965 squad finished the season with a record of 27-8-1 (.764). The Ducks’ third-place finish in the Pac-12 was also the best for the program since Mel Krause’s 1978 team finished second in the Northern Division. Horton also took Oregon to its first Super Regional since 1954, when the Ducks hosted the NCAA Western Regionals at Howe Field, defeating Seattle and Fresno State (twice) for the right to move on to the 1954 College World Series. Oregon’s Super Regional appearance was also the eighth in Horton’s head coaching career. Now with a career record of 622-321-2, Horton earned his 600th career victory with a 5-0 shutout at Stanford on April 14. With Horton overseeing the pitching for the first time during his tenure at Oregon, Alex Keudell and Jimmie Sherfy combined to win seven All-American accolades while Keudell was also voted the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year - a first for a Duck. Since his first season as a Division I head coach at Cal State Fullerton in 1997, Horton has had 24 student-athletes receive All-American honors in addition to 103 Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft picks. PK PARK Oregon finished the 2012 season ranked 29th in the country in attendance (third Pac-12) averaging 2,128 fans per game at PK Park. Of Oregon’s all-time top-10 attended games at PK Park, six took place this season.

Keudell’s 23 career wins are a new UO all-time record. • Oregon’s 29 home runs surpass the club’s total of 19 from 2012. • Jimmie Sherfy’s 19 saves set new Oregon single-season and all-time records. His 19 stops ranked second in the country behind Stefan Lopez (20) of Southeastern Louisiana. • • On June 11, Oregon baseball set a new PK Park attendance record with a crowd of 4,825 as UO lost to Kent State, 3-2, in the Super Regional title game. • Oregon won a team-record 14 consecutive home games from April 27-June 3 at PK Park. • On April 18 at Volcanoes Stadium (Keizer, Ore.), freshman Jordan Spencer threw the first no-hitter since the Oregon baseball program was reinstated (2009) in a 3-0 victory over Portland. • Oregon’s 5-0 series-clinching win over Stanford on April 14 marked the 600th Division I career victory for head coach George Horton. • With Oregon’s 8-3 win at UCLA (April 16), the Ducks won five consecutive conference games for the first time since May 4-9, 1976. • In Oregon’s 3-1 victory over ASU on March 31, Kyle Garlick became the first UO player since reinstatement (2009) to hit two home runs in one game. Aaron Jones became the second player with two home runs at UCLA on April 5. • On March 17, Oregon won its 100th game since the program was reinstated, defeating Washington, 3-2, in 13 innings at Husky Ballpark. • Oregon’s 8-3 loss at Washington on March 16 snapped Oregon’s seven-game road winning streak - its longest since prior to 1963 (the first season game-bygame results are available). • Oregon’s 10-game winning streak (Feb. 18-March 4) was its longest since 1969, and Oregon’s 10-1 start was the best for the program since 1965.

2012 SEASON REVIEW • From Feb. 19-23, UO recorded three consecutive wins with double-digit runs for the first time since April 22-24, 1974. • Oregon trailed Long Beach State 5-0 on March 4, but the Ducks staged a comeback to win 8-7 on Aaron Jones’ walk-off in the bottom of the ninth. It was the Ducks’ first comeback from a five-run deficit since a 17-7 victory over East Tennessee State at PK Park on May 16, 2010. • On March 10 in Oregon’s 12-0 win over West Virginia, Aaron Jones hit the first Oregon grand slam at PK Park since J.J. Altobelli vs. USC (April 25, 2010). • Three Oregon pitchers tossed nine-inning complete-game shutouts in 2012: Brando Tessar’s four-hit, nine-inning complete-game shutout helped UO to a 4-0 win over Connecticut on March 11. Alex Keudell pitched a four-hit shutout as No. 23 Oregon upset No. 14 Arizona State 1-0 on March 31. Jordan Spencer pitched a no-hitter in Oregon’s 3-0 shutout win over Portland on April 18. Between March 23 and May 18, won nine consecutive starts. During that stretch posted a 9-0 record with a 1.14 ERA allowing just nine runs in 71 and 1/3 innings..eight win in Pac-12 play led the league. Jake Reed: Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, Eugene All-Regional Team, Pac-12 All-Conference honorable mention Oregon’s Saturday starter as a true freshman, finished the season with a record of 8-4, 2.92 ERA and a staff leading 15 quality starts...in 17 starts, pitched a total of 114.0 innings, and held opposing batters to a .230 clip while totaling 67 strikeouts...during the postseason in two starts was an undefeated 2-0, allowing two earned runs in 13 and 2/3 innings while striking out 14 and holding batters to a .149 clip...in a must-win game against Kent State at the Eugene Super Regional, helped Oregon halt the Golden Flashes’ 21-game win streak by holding Kent State to two runs on five hits and two walks, while fanning six in six and 2/3 innings Vanderbilt, Arizona State, UCLA, Stanford, California and USC.

TWO-OUT RBI Oregon drove in 266 runs in 2012, and out of those 266 RBI, 102 were produced in two-out situations. Sophomore Kyle Garlick led the Ducks with 18 two-out RBIs followed by Ryon Healy (15), Aaron Jones (14) and Aaron Payne (14). IN THE NCAA Oregon’s 2.99 ERA led the Pac-12 and finished the year ranked 12th in the country. The Duck pitching staff held opponents to a .225 clip to lead the Pac12, while UO’s pitchers picked off 15 runners to lead the league. Oregon’s staff allowed just 7.11 hits per nine innings to rank second in the country. The Ducks’ 439 strikeouts ranked second in the Pac-12 behind College World Series champion Arizona (443). In addition, Oregon’s 7.15 hits allowed per nine innings ranked second in the country. UO’s .978 fielding percentage led the Pac-12 and ranked seventh in the country. SOPHOMORE STATE Oregon’s sophomore class dominated the Duck offense in 2012 as six sophomores regularly started in the field. Pac-12 honorable mention second baseman Aaron Payne (.277) was the only UO player to start all 65 games at one position and led the Ducks with 42 runs scored, 25 hit-by-pitches, 18 sacrifice bunts and 16 stolen bases. Pac-12 honorable mention first baseman Ryon Healy led Oregon with 23 multiple-hit games and 79 hits, including 13 doubles, one triple and four home runs while driving in a team-leading 42 runs. The pair of Aaron Jones and Kyle Garlick split time between designated hitter and right field. Jones, a Pac-12 honorable mention pick, finished the year batting .303 and totaled 39 RBI and nine-multiple RBI games while driving in the game-winning run on 10 occasions. Garlick, who finished the year hitting .287, produced 40 RBI and 10 multipleRBI games, while also delivering an astonishing 18 RBI during two-out situations. The Chino Hills, Calif., native shared the team lead with Jones in home runs (6). Left fielder Brett Thomas led the Ducks with a .313 average as well as 14 doubles and four triples. In center field, Connor Hofmann hit .239 with three home runs.

Hawai’i senior right-hander Matt Sisto (1-0) also puzzled the Ducks’ lineup for most of the game, tossing seven shutout innings, while surrendering just two hits and recording five strikeouts. Trailing 4-0, Oregon made things interesting in the top of the ninth as the club’s freshmen staged a two-out rally scoring the Ducks’ first and only run of the game on three consecutive hits. In his first at-bat as a Duck, Billy Flamion drove in Shaun Chase from second with a single to center field. After Flamion’s RBI single, Walker loaded the bases with his second hit of the game, but Hawai’i left fielder Kaeo Aliviado squashed any chance of UO comeback making a diving grab in foul territory with Aaron Payne at the plate. Jesse Moore earned the save for the Rainbows, after facing two batters in the top of the ninth. Keudell (0-1) took the loss for Oregon, allowing one unearned run on four hits and two walks while striking out three. Walker led Oregon with a 2-for-4 outing as five of UO’s seven hits came from the freshman class.

Sherfy (1-0) was filthy, tossing five and 2/3 innings of shutout relief and striking out 13 to earn his first win in an Oregon uniform. From the 10th through the first out of the 12th inning, Sherfy fanned six consecutive batters. Sophomore second baseman Aaron Payne had given Oregon its 3-2 lead in the top of the 12th after driving a one-out double into left center. Payne then stole third, and as Hawai’i pitcher Patrick O’Rourke bounced his offering to J.J. Altobelli in front of the plate, Payne was able to score on the wild pitch. Patrick O’Rourke (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing one run on two hits in two innings on the mound. Payne led the Ducks with a 4-for-5 effort, as the clubs combined to leave 24 runners on base (16 Hawai’i, 8 Oregon).

NOTES: For the first time in three attempts, Oregon will depart Hawaii with a series win as the Ducks defeated the Rainbows, 12-6, on Monday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium. Junior J.J. Altobelli led the Ducks with a 5-for-6 performance, which included three doubles – the most any Oregon player has produced in a single game since the program was reinstated in 2009. Freshman Shaun Chase made his first appearance on the mound, but that was only after hitting 2-for-5 in the designated hitter spot, and driving in two runs with a home run and triple while also scoring two runs. Oregon totaled 17 hits on the afternoon, including seven for extra bases. Sophomore Ryon Healy drove in Oregon’s first three runs of the game with a 2-for-4 day which included a double. Sophomore Aaron Jones batted 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a double, while sophomore Kyle Garlick was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Scott Heineman and Brett Thomas also added two hits apiece.

NOTES: Earlier in the week, it was bombs away for the University of Oregon, which scored 39 runs in a three-game stretch. But for the second straight day against No. 17 Vanderbilt (1-5), the Ducks (6-1) pitched well, took advantage of their opponent’s mistakes and played flawless defense in victory – this time a 7-2 result Saturday afternoon at Hawkins Field. Freshman Jake Reed (1-0) made the most of his second career start, shrugging of a shaky first inning to toss six innings of three-hit, two-run ball. He walked three – none after the second inning – and struck out five. Oregon’s bats got off to a slow start as Vandy left-hander Sam Selman (0-2) retired the side in order over the first three innings. And while the UO sticks were still mostly silent in the top of the fourth, four walks, a balk, a wild pitch and an error on a pickoff attempt resulted in three runs. The Ducks went up 5-1 in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Payne, bringing home Brett Hambright, who led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, went to second on a base hit from Andrew Mendenhall and advanced to third Altobelli’s sacrifice bunt. After the Dores scored a lone run in their half of the sixth, Oregon scratched out single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to put the game away. UO’s final run in the eighth, scored by Chase, was its first scored by a player who had reached base via something other than a walk or HBP. Only one of the Ducks’ seven runs was driven in via a hit.

NOTES: Ryon Healy homered and drove in four, and Shaun Chase went yard and plated three, helping the University of Oregon continue its hot early season play with a 13-4 blowout of Belmont at Rose Park. The win for the Ducks (4-1) was their fourth straight overall and third in a row while scoring 10 or more runs, a first since the program was reinstated prior to the 2009 season. The team’s 4-1 start is also the best in UO’s modern era. Oregon scored multiple times in each of the first four innings and never looked back. Healy had run-producing hits in the opening two frames and capped his big day with a two-run shot in the eighth. Connor Hofmann also got in on the long ball parade for Oregon, cranking the first home run of his career in the third inning, staking the Ducks to an 8-1 lead. Billy Flamion (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory by pitching 4 1/3 innings of one-hit relief, walking two and striking out two. The freshman’s only blemish came on a 2-run homer by Drew Turner in the third. David Wylie pitched the final three innings to earn his first save and finish off the night on the mound for the Ducks. Wylie surrendered one run on a solo homer to Jared Breen, leading off the eighth, but was stellar otherwise, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out three.

With the game tied at 4-4 and pinch runner Vernell Warren on second base with one out, Scott Heineman hit a ground ball to shortstop Matt Duffy, who fielded it cleanly but threw low to first baseman Ino Patron. Warren rounded third as Patron gathered the ball and beat the throw home with a head-first slide, getting his left hand on the plate ahead of catcher Royce Murai’s tag. Jeff Gold (2-0) pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for Oregon, allowing one hit. Starter Alex Keudell appeared to be headed for an early exit after spotting the Dirtbags (4-5) three runs on five hits in the top of the first, but settled down nicely, allowing a single run on four hits and a walk over his next six frames. UO’s senior ace struck out six. Trailing 3-0 in the fourth, Ryan Hambright came through with a two-run double before scoring on Connor Hofmann’s groundout to tie the score off LBSU starter Shawn Stuart. The Ducks took their first lead in the next inning when Brett Thomas walked with the bases loaded to score Aaron Jones, who tripled with one out.

Warren went 2 for 2, working a walk in a pinch-hit assignment to start to ninth inning before hitting two singles in extra frames. Oregon started the game hot, with Ryon Healy’s RBI single in the bottom of the first, and Brett Hambright’s RBI double in the second inning. But Long Beach State’s starting pitcher Matt Anderson held the Ducks scoreless for the remainder of his 6.2 innings pitched. Anderson wasn’t the only pitcher spinning a gem, though, as Oregon’s Jake Reed allowed just one run over his 7.1 innings pitched, striking out eight, and allowing only five hits. With a runner at second, and one out in the eighth inning, Oregon’s Jimmie Sherfy was called on to get the Ducks the win. He quickly forced a fly-out and a strikeout before returning in the ninth. Sherfy struck out the first two Dirtbag batters to face him in the 9th, but a single by Matt Duffy extended the game. Duffy eventually scored the tying run off of a Brennan Fulkerson single. Sherfy ran the course, though, allowing just two hits in his 5.2 innings of relief. Sherfy earned the win, improving to (2-0) on the season.

Aaron Jones’ clutch two-out single on a 3-0 pitch in the bottom of the ninth scored pinch runner Vernell Warren with the winning run to give the Ducks (10-1) their 10th straight victory. In a game full of offense, freshman Kyle Garlick and sophomore Brett Thomas led the way. Garlick had three RBIs on two hits, and Thomas hit two triples, one leading off the ninth, which eventually led to the Ducks’ winning run. Oregon’s starter Brando Tessar had trouble finding a rhythm early in the game, allowing five earned runs in 4.2 innings, but solid relief from the bullpen kept the Ducks in the game. Long Beach State used a hot start to build a 5-0 lead through the first four and a half innings. Joey Housey (1-0) pitched the final 1.1 innings in relief for UO to earn the win. Nick Sabo (0-2) took the loss for LBSU.

Right-hander Kevin Johnson (2-1) tossed a one-run complete game, holding the Ducks (10-2) to a season-low four hits while striking out five. Oregon righthander Alex Keudell (1-2) was the tough-luck loser, allowing just two runs in eight innings of work. He surrendered six hits and struck out six. The Fighting Illini (5-5) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth as Jordan Parr drove a two-out triple into deep center field, and Reid Roper came around to score from first. It was Roper who kept the inning alive with a two-out single. Oregon took the first lead of the game in the second as Ryon Healy hammered Johnson’s first offering into left field. Kyle Garlick then knocked him in with a one-out double to left. Illinois evened the score in the top of the fourth as Davis Hendrickson’s fielder’s choice allowed Roper to score.

NOTES: No. 17 Oregon could do no wrong in Saturday’s contest against the West Virginia in the Nike College Showcase, routing the Mountaineers 12-0. The game was shortened to eight innings due to the 10-run rule agreed upon by the head coaches prior to first pitch. The Ducks (11-2) had a 6-0 lead after three innings of play, and their advantage expanded to 11-0 after Aaron Jones’ grand slam in the eighth put the Mountaineers (6-9) away for good. Oregon’s offense was also helped by sophomore Kyle Garlick, and junior Ryan Hambright. Garlick went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, setting a new career high for the native of Chino Hills, Calif. Jones’ homer wasn’t the first of the game, as Hambright hit a three-run round tripper – the first of his Oregon career in the fourth. Both Hambright and Jones set new career highs with runs driven in. Starting pitcher Jeff Gold (3-0) allowed just four hits in an eight-inning complete-game shutout, fanning five.

NOTES: Washington took advantage of an impressive start from right-hander Aaron West and pounced on three Oregon errors as the Dawgs opened Pac-12 play with an 8-3 victory over the No. 17 Ducks at Husky Ballpark on Friday night. West (3-1) allowed three runs on five hits in six innings of work while striking out three. At one point, West retired 13 consecutive Oregon batters from the last out in the top of the second until Kyle Garlick chased him with a solo home run on the first pitch delivered to lead off the seventh. Oregon (12-4) starter Alex Keudell (1-3) retired the first nine batters he faced, but four consecutive Washington hits, including a lead-off double, tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Then with runners on the corners and no outs, Michael Camporeale hit into a double play, but Branden Berry was able to score the go-ahead run as the Huskies took a 3-2 advantage and never looked back. Keudell took the loss allowing seven runs – four earned – on eight hits in six and 2/3 innings of action while striking out three. Washington totaled 11 hits compared to Oregon’s seven, led by Anselment and B.K. Santy, who had two hits apiece. Garlick and Brett Hambright led the Ducks with two hits each. Only one Washington starter did not record a hit in the game.

With the win, Washington took the Pac-12 series as Oregon dropped its first series of the season, while also losing back-to-back games for the first time in 2012. In his first collegiate start, Davis (1-0) pitched six shutout innings, allowing three hits and issuing just one walk while striking out one. The Simi Valley, Calif., native pitched a completegame shutout, surrendering only four hits, striking out six, and walking two batters en route to a 4-0 win against the University of Connecticut. Tessar held the Huskies hitless from the second through eighth inning, and needed only seven pitches to finish the Huskies in the bottom of the fifth. After surrendering three hits in the first inning but getting out of the bases-loaded jam unscathed, Tessar faced just one batter over the minimum the rest of the way. With the win, he improves to 3-0 on the year, lowering his ERA to 3.55 Tessar’s complete game is the first of his career, and the second of the weekend for the Ducks. Anthony Marzi (0-3) also pitched a complete game for UConn, but gave up nine hits and four runs (two of which were earned). The Huskies fall to 6-8 on the year. Oregon was offensively led by J.J. Altobelli’s 2-for-4 effort, along with first-time starter Vernell Warren also batting 2-for-4 with a run scored and first career double.

Sherfy (3-0) tossed six and 2/3 innings in relief, and recovered after allowing the game-tying run to score in the ninth. The right-hander allowed just four hits and walked one while striking out six. In the top of the 13th, Washington reliever Adam Cimber (0-1) issued the lead-off walk to Andrew Mendenhall. The junior outfielder moved to second on a sacrifice and scored the go-ahead run as J.J. Altobelli put the ball in play, but an error from UW second baseman Joe Meggs allowed Mendenhall to score. The Ducks looked to have the game won in nine innings, taking a 2-1 advantage into the bottom of the ninth but Ryan Wiggins delivered the pinch-hit, two-out single through the left side that scored Caleb Brown from third to tie the game. It was Brown’s one-out single that put the game-tying run aboard for Washington as he moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a groundout before coming home on Wiggins’ single.

2012 GAME-BY-GAME CAPSULES Washington starter Austin Voth had a no hitter going into the sixth inning as UW led 1-0, and the Ducks hadn’t scored in 16 consecutive innings, when Oregon started a two-out rally. Voth walked Altobelli and plunked Aaron Payne to put runners on first and second before Aaron Jones drove a two-run double off the wall in left center as UO took a 2-1 lead. Voth lasted six innings on the mound, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks while totaling seven strikeouts. In six and 1/3 innings of work, Oregon starter Brando Tessar held Washington to one run on six hits while striking out a career-high eight batters and issuing just two walks.

As Oregon trailed 3-2 entering the bottom of the eighth, Kyle Garlick started the comeback with a single, and scored from first to tie the game when designated hitter Brett Thomas roped a double into left field. Sitting at second, Thomas was able to score on Scott Heineman’s single to right to give UO a one-run cushion. After stealing second and moving to third on a wild pitch, Heineman scored Oregon’s final run courtesy of a Connor Hofmann sacrifice fly. Utah reliever Tyler Wagner (1-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on five hits and two walks in three innings of relief. Right-hander Brock Duke allowed two runs on three hits and three walks in five innings in the start for the Utes. In his fifth quality start of the season, Reed allowed only three runs on four hits and three walks. After surrendering a run in the first, the La Mesa, Calif., retired 11 consecutive batters into the fifth. Joey Housey (2-0) picked up the win for Oregon, tossing just 2/3 of an inning, and holding Utah without a run on one hit. Jimmie Sherfy earned his fourth save of the season, striking out the first two batters he faced in the ninth, and retiring Tyler Relf to center field.

Two batters later, Sherfy surrendered his first home run of the season as Morin took the 1-2 offering over the right field wall and put the Utes (7-15, 3-3) ahead 4-3. Oregon had the game-tying run 90 feet away in the bottom of the ninth as Ryan Hambright drove a one-out triple into deep center field. Utah right-hander Mitch Watrous then plunked pinch-hitter Daniel Pardini to put runners on the corners, but J.J. Altobelli hit into a double play to end the game. After issuing a leadoff walk, Texas State first baseman Casey Kalenkosky gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead with a one-out, two-run homer to left center. Texas State added three more runs in the inning courtesy of one-run singles from Jeff McVaney and Cody Gambill and a Nick Smelser sacrifice fly. Black (2-0), in his second start of the year, earned the win after holding Oregon (15-7) to two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out seven in six and 1/3 innings of work. Gold (3-1) lasted just one and 2/3 innings in the loss, allowing five runs – four earned – on four hits and three walks. The Ducks also allowed Texas State’s leadoff batters to reach four times during the game, and each of those four times the runner came around to score. Texas State (169) right-hander Austen Williams (1-0) got the win after surrendering five runs on eight hits and one walk while fanning four in six and 1/3 innings on the hill. In the second start of his collegiate career, left-hander Jordan Spencer (0-1) was credited with the loss after tossing four innings and allowing five runs – four earned – while also issuing two walks and striking out two. Thomas Walker, starting at third in his first appearance since Feb. 19 at Hawai’i, hit the first home run of his collegiate career, taking Williams’ 1-1 offering over the wall in left field in the top of the fourth as Oregon closed 5-3. The Long Beach, Calif., native was 2-for-4 on the day and scored three of UO’s six runs. Altobelli finished his day 2-for-5 with a RBI, while Thomas finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. NOTES: Oregon’s three-run inning in the fifth was all the No. 16 Ducks needed in a 4-2 win over San Francisco on Monday night at PK Park. In the bottom of the fifth, Pac-12 Player of the Week Brett Thomas drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-out, basesloaded, two-run single back up the middle. In the loss, Remer allowed four runs on three hits and five walks while striking out four in four and 2/3 innings on the mound. Oregon (21-9) left-hander Jordan Spencer (1-1) was credited with the win after holding San Francisco to one run on six hits in four and 2/3 innings of relief while registering two strikeouts. In his first start on the mound for Oregon, Scott Heineman allowed one run on one hit and one walk, while striking out one in two and 1/3 innings of work. In the top of the ninth, Jimmie Sherfy picked up his seventh save of the year, retiring the final two batters of the game. Brett Hambright and Hofmann led the Ducks with two hits apiece.

and Hofmann to second. A wild pitch brought Walker home, and Hofmann slipped rounding third, prompting a throw from Stanford (21-8, 4-6) catcher Eric Smith. But the throw was errant and sailed into left field, allowing Hofmann to score Oregon’s fourth run. Piscotty (2-1) was credited with the loss, allowing three unearned runs on one hit and one walk in just one third of an inning. Before the tenth, the game was a pitching duel between Appel and Oregon’s Alex Keudell. Now 4-0 in his last four starts, Keudell (5-3) was credited with the win for the Ducks after allowing just one run on five hits while walking no one and striking out a season-best seven. In nine innings on the hill, Appel reached a 149 pitch count, and allowed one unearned run on 10 hits, while striking out 13 and issuing just two walks in the no decision. Jimmie Sherfy was credited with his eighth save of the year, but not before making things interesting in the bottom of the tenth as Oregon held a 4-1 advantage. The Duck closer walked two batters and hit a batter to load the bases with one out before Piscotty drove in Stanford’s second run with a two-out RBI single to left. Brian Ragira then flied out to right to end the game. The Ducks left 14 runners on base for the third time this season. J.J. Altobelli, Brett Thomas, Garlick and Hofmann led Oregon with two hits apiece as Oregon totaled 12 hits compared with Stanford’s six.

NOTES: No. 22 Oregon won its fifth in a row and clinched the series with an 8-3 victory over No. 5 UCLA on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Oregon’s (20-8, 8-3) bats were once again active, as the Ducks turned a 2-1 lead into 6-1 advantage with four-run effort in the fifth, and totaled 11 hits for the game. On the mound, the Ducks received another solid start from freshman Jake Reed. In the win, Reed (3-2) earned his second straight victory on the mound, limiting UCLA (20-7, 7-4) to three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out two in six innings of work. As Oregon built its lead, Reed retired nine consecutive UCLA batters from the third through fifth innings. UCLA’s Nick Vander Tuig (3-2) took the loss, surrendering eight runs on 10 hits, while issuing two walks and striking out one. In relief, UCLA right-hander David Berg shut out the Ducks for the final three innings of the game, striking out seven UO batters and allowing just one hit in three and 2/3 innings of action. Brett Thomas led Oregon with a 3-for-4 performance which included a RBI and run scored. Ryon Healy was 2-for-5, driving in two runs and also recording a double. Aaron Jones also doubled, and drove in a run, extending his hitting streak to eight games. Sophomore Connor Hofmann also hit his second career home run, while Brett Hambright was walked twice and scored two runs. Joey Housey was credited with the save after tossing three shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four.

Reed (4-2) pitched seven shutout innings in the win, allowing just two hits, issuing two walks and striking out two. In four innings on the hill, Stanford starter Brett Mooneyham (5-3) surrendered five runs (four earned) on four hits and four walks, while still managing to strike out eight (five looking). Jeff Gold closed the game for Oregon, shutting out Stanford on one hit while striking out three in two innings. Oregon’s lead expanded to 5-0 in the fourth as Healy launched a two-out homer over the wall in left center. Healy’s second home run of the year brought in J.J. Altobelli, who was issued a two-out walk to start UO’s rally, and Aaron Payne, who reached on a two-out bunt single. Healy finished his day with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in three runs and scoring two runs, while Payne finished his day 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Brando Tessar (4-1) had walked Diekroeger and surrendered a single to Wilson before leaving the game. Joey Housey retired Justin Ringo, and had 0-2 count on Lonnie Kauppila before Stanford’s shortstop left the game with an injury. Doran took over the at-bat and drove in the Cardinal’s first two runs. Tessar tossed just one inning and 34 pitches before leaving the game with discomfort. In the second, he issued one walk, and surrendered a single before Housey replaced him on the mound in relief. Tessar allowed two runs on one hit and three walks in one inning, taking his first loss of the year. Stanford A.J. NOTES: The Ducks got all they could handle from Arkansas Pine Bluff on Monday night at PK Park, as No. 8 Oregon escaped with a hard-earned 3-2 victory over the visiting Lions. Oregon’s (25-10) starting pitcher Jeff Gold (5-2) threw a gem in the win, keeping the Lions off the scoreboard for the game’s first six innings, until allowing two runs in the top of the seventh. Gold was backed by perfect relief, as Tommy Thorpe and Jimmie Sherfy pitched an inning each, as both struck out the side in their respective appearances. The relief staff ended the game with six straight strikeouts. Sherfy also picked up his ninth save of the season. Offensively, the Ducks were led by Kyle Garlick, whose sacrifice fly in the seventh proved to be the difference. Freshman Thomas Walker contributed after replacing J.J. Altobelli, hitting an RBI single in the fourth inning, and giving the Ducks a crucial 2-0 lead after a wild pitch plated the first run in the third inning. Arkansas Pine Bluff’s starter Brett Schweiger was effective throughout his five innings of work, allowing just two runs on five hits. But the Ducks forced the Lions to bring in a reliever in the sixth. Stanten Jones (2-7) did not allow a hit in his two and 2/3 innings, but walked four batters, opening the door for Garlick’s game-winning RBI.

Oregon starter Jake Reed was in line for the win after holding the Cougars to two runs on six hits, while striking out five, but the bullpen couldn’t hold off WSU in the eighth. With the bases loaded in the top of the eighth and Sherfy on the mound, WSU designated hitter Adam Nelubowich plated the tying and go-ahead runs with a double to deep center field. Derek Jones scored the fifth WSU run on a RBI groundout from Collin Slaybaugh. The inning was able to continue on an Aaron Payne error, allowing Nelubowich to score unearned and Tommy Richards to reach safely. Kellen Camus, Spencer Jackson, Scott Simon and Anthony Drobnick all appeared in relief for the Cougars. Jackson (2-1) was credited with the win after tossing a shutout inning in the seventh. Washington State (20-16, 7-7) first baseman Taylor Ard had a dominating performance, driving in five runs with a three-run homer in the first and a two-run shot in the eighth on a 3-for-5 day at the plate. The Ducks (27-12, 11-7) lost their second weekend series of the year, and the first since dropping two of three at Washington (March 16-17). The Cougars pounded out 13 hits against the Oregon pitching staff, the most the Ducks have surrendered during the 2012 season. WSU led 10-2 after the top of the eighth before Oregon scored four runs in the final two innings, and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth as Shaun Chase – representing the game-tying run – grounded out to second. Oregon also left nine runners on base and hit into two double plays. Oregon’s starting pitcher Jeff Gold (5-3) found trouble with the Cougar lineup throughout, pitching just four and 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks. NOTES: Another solid start from Alex Keudell and a pair of extra-base hits from Kyle Garlick led the eighth-ranked Ducks to a 6-2 series-opening victory over Washington State on Friday night at PK Park. Things started quickly for Oregon (27-10, 11-5), as back-to-back singles from Aaron Payne and Ryon Healy set the table for Garlick, who hit a two-run, two-out triple to put Washington State (18-16, 5-7) behind 2-0 early. The two-run lead was all Keudell (6-3) needed as the senior pitched seven solid innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits, and tying a season high with seven strikeouts. Oregon took a 5-1 lead in the fourth as Garlick led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run, to claim his fifth round-tripper of the season. Thomas Walker continued the inning with a double to left center, before scoring on Kevin Shepherd’s RBI single up the middle. Shepherd moved into scoring position on the play, and scored after stealing third as the throw from catcher Collin Slaybaugh was wide of the bag, allowing Shepherd to score on the error. Washington State starter Sean Hartnett (0-1) never got into a rhythm against the Ducks, as the freshman only lasted three and 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits.

Jones’ offensive performance was backed by another near-perfect outing by senior Alex Keudell (7-3) as the righthander earned his sixth consecutive victory on the mound, allowing just one run while scattering five hits and striking out two in his second complete game of the year. With the game knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Oregon loaded the bases for the third straight inning by way of three consecutive one-out singles. Aaron Payne’s sacrifice fly to right field brought home the game-winning run in Brett Hambright, and Jones added insurance with a bases-clearing two-run double down the left field line as Connor Hofmann and Kevin Shepherd scored to give Oregon a three-run lead. The No. 10 Ducks (30-13, 14-7) completed the sweep of the Golden Bears (23-18, 7-11), and have totaled their most conference wins since the program was reinstated (2009). Oregon’s offense was led by the duo of Kyle Garlick and Aaron Payne, as the pair drove in three runs apiece. Garlick had a 3-for-3 day at the plate, recording his eighth game of the season with multiple RBIs, while Payne recorded his sixth double of the year batting 3-for-5. Right-hander Jeff Gold (6-3) pitched a sold seven innings, scattering nine hits and allowing just one run while walking no one and striking out two. Of Oregon’s seven runs scored, six came home with two outs on the scoreboard. Keudell (8-3) tossed his third complete game of the year, second in a row, holding the Wildcats (29-14, 12-7) to one run on seven hits while matching a season-high seven strikeouts. The native of Portland, Ore., has now won seven consecutive starts. Oregon’s (33-13, 15-7) offense scored six runs on 13 hits, as reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week Aaron Payne led the Ducks with a 3-for-4 evening, while knocking in three runs. Arizona’s Kurt Heyer (8-2) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) as the Ducks tallied 12 hits off the right-hander while he issued one walk and struck out five. After throwing six shutout innings, Arizona finally roughed up Keudell in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run on three hits. Arizona’s 12 runs are the most the Duck pitching staff has allowed since a 12-6 loss at Washington State on May 20, 2011. Oregon took its first lead of the game in the top of the eighth as Farris issued Kevin Shepherd a one-out walk. He moved to second on a groundout, and Aaron Jones delivered his team-leading 33rd RBI, driving in the go-ahead run with a single to left. NOTES: No. 10 Oregon extended its winning streak to four games, completing a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Gonzaga on Tuesday night at the Patterson Baseball Complex. As Oregon (31-13) trailed 2-0 after five innings, sophomore Kyle Garlick changed the scope of the game with one swing of the bat, taking Kenny Smith’s 2-0, two-out offering and depositing his team-leading sixth home run of the year over the wall in left center. The two-run shot scored Ryon Healy, who was issued a one-out walk earlier in the inning, and evened the game. In the seventh, Oregon pushed the game-winning across as Connor Hofmann reached on an error after a hard hit infield grounder was fielded by Gonzaga third baseman Mitchell Gunsolus, but Hofmann reached safely as first baseman Andy Hunter committed the error and dropped the throw. The Ducks executed the hit-and-run as Hofmann moved from first to third when Kevin Shepherd singled through the left side, setting up the squeeze play as Pac12 Player of the Week Aaron Payne’s sacrifice bunt brought Hofmann home unearned. In the fifth start of his career, freshman left-hander Jordan Spencer (3-2) allowed two runs on seven hits, while issuing one walk and striking out four in the win. The Bulldogs (27-15) stranded 12 runners on base, outhitting Oregon 9-3. He scored from third as Brett Thomas drove his team-leading 12th double down the first base line. The inning continued as Kyle Garlick was walked, and a double steal put both runners in position to score on Ryan Hambright’s two-run single as the Ducks led 3-0 after the first. After the first inning, the 2,726 fans in attendance watched six consecutive innings of shutout baseball until Oregon State broke through with two runs in the top of the eighth. The Beavers put two runs on the board as reliever Jordan Spencer gave up back-to-back singles before Sherfy was brought out in relief. In the ninth, Sherfy issued walks to Ryan Dunn and Kavin Keyes, putting runners at first and second with two outs, but his strikeout of Jake Rodriguez thwarted a Beaver comeback. Sherfy earned his league-leading 13th save of the season tossing two shutout innings and striking out three. In the first start of his career, Tommy Thorpe (1-0) tossed four shutout innings – a new career high - and allowed just one hit while issuing one walk and matching a career best with three strikeouts. NOTES: The sixth-ranked Oregon baseball team completed the sweep of USC on Monday night at PK Park with a come-from-behind 6-3 victory. Trailing 3-1, Oregon manufactured a three-run inning in the sixth to take its first lead of the game before adding two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. For the fourth straight game Oregon’s lead was handed over to closer Jimmie Sherfy, and the right-hander picked up his 16th save of the season after entering the game in the eighth with runners on the corners and just one out as the Ducks led 4-3. A strikeout and fly out ended the top of the eighth, and after the Ducks put up two runs in the bottom of the inning, Sherfy struck out the side in the ninth. Oregon right-hander Jeff Gold improved to 7-3 for the Ducks, holding USC (22-24, 7-16) to three runs – just one earned – on five hits and two walks while matching a career high with six strikeouts. USC starter Stephen Tarpley (5-2) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs – three earned – on five hits and five walks in five and 1/3 innings on the mound. As Oregon trailed by two runs, a three-run sixth inning allowed the Ducks to take their first lead of the contest, 4-3, as a trio of Oregon batters each drove in a run. With Thomas Walker at third and Brett Hambright at second after a walk and double, Andrew Mendenhall drove in a run with a single to left. A J.J. Altobelli sacrifice fly evened the score, and Aaron Jones’ bunt single brought in Mendenhall from third as UO took a 4-3 lead. Payne, Jones and Brett Hambright led the Ducks with two hits apiece including Hambright’s fifth double of the season, and Payne’s third triple of the year. Keudell (10-3) won his ninth consecutive start after shutting out the Redhawks (22-25) on five hits and one walk while striking out five in seven and 2/3 innings on the mound. Oregon (39-14) extended its winning streak to six games behind Keudell’s start, and left-hander Tommy Thorpe earned his first save after entering the game in the top of the eighth with the tying run at the plate. Thorpe got out of the jam, and struck out four of the five batters he faced. After three hits in the first, Oregon led 2-0, but the Ducks would be shut out for six straight innings until batting around in the bottom of the eighth and scoring four runs on three hits. Seafth Howe (4-5) was issued the loss after allowing five runs on six hits and four walks while striking out just one Oregon batter. From the second through sixth innings, Howe faced only one batter over the minimum.

With the Redhawks (22-27) holding on to a 1-0 advantage, Payne recorded UO’s first hit of the game by launching the first home run of his career over the wall in right to even the score. Oregon added two more runs in the inning to take a 3-1 lead with a two-out rally. Dalton walked Ryon Healy and surrendered a single to Brett Thomas before Kyle Garlick drove a RBI double into left field. Garrett Anderson came out of the bullpen in relief of Dalton, and delivered a wild pitch as Thomas scored UO’s third run of the frame. In the loss, Dalton allowed three runs on three hits and four walks in four and 2/3 innings on the mound. In the sixth, the Ducks added a pair of runs as Payne’s RBI triple plated J.J. Altobelli, before Payne scored on Aaron Jones’ RBI single that dropped into center field. Healy was able to advance to third on the throw home, setting up Garlick’s pinch-hit RBI single into center that plated the go-ahead run. Following the sixth, the trio of Joey Housey, Tommy Thorpe and Jimmie Sherfy held the Pilots without a base runner for the final three innings. Sherfy closed the game recording his 17th save of the season and striking out the side in the ninth. In the win, Oregon left-hander Jordan Spencer (4-2) allowed just one run on three hits and three walks while striking out two. In two starts against the Pilots, Spencer is 2-0, allowing just one run in 15 innings pitched. Portland starter Kyle Krause (6-6) was the tough-luck loser pitching an eight-inning complete game, and holding Oregon to two runs on eight hits while striking out four. Payne and Healy led Oregon with two hits apiece, while Same Westendorf recorded two of Portland’s three hits.

An uncharacteristic start from Alex Keudell (10-4) had the Beavers leading 5-3 after five innings. Keudell’s nine-start winning streak was snapped as the Portland, Ore., native allowed a season-high five earned runs on five hits and a more damaging season-high five walks. In the win, OSU starter Ben Wetzler (7-2) tossed five and 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while issuing four walks and striking out six UO batters.

Oregon (42-16, 19-10) had the tying run at third in Aaron Payne, and Ryon Healy drove a line drive into left field that was caught by Michael Conforto. Payne took off from third but was thrown out at the plate as Ryan Gorton completed the tag. Payne had led off the inning with a double to right center. The Ducks trailed No. 23 Oregon State (37-18, 17-12), 3-2, after seven innings, and stranded the game-tying runs at third in both the eighth and ninth innings. Dan Child was credited with his first save of the year, shutting out the Ducks on one hit in one and 2/3 innings. Oregon starter Jake Reed shut out Oregon State for five innings on four hits before getting into trouble in the sixth as one swing of the bat changed the game for the Beavers. Designated hitter Danny Hayes took a one-out, 0-1 offering from Reed and delivered the pitch over the wall in right as the two-run shot tied the game. The round-tripper scored Conforto who singled before Hayes’ at-bat. After issuing a leadoff walk to Kavin Keyes after a 10-pitch battle and a sacrifice that moved him to second, Oregon went to its bullpen in left-hander Tommy Thorpe in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Nick Rulli, in his first official at-bat in Pac-12 play, drove in the go-ahead with his first hit of the year, taking the second pitch he saw from Thorpe and driving a one-out double down the left field line to put the Beavers ahead 3-2 in the seventh as Keyes scored. In a battle of freshmen starters, left-hander Jace Fry allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks in six and two third innings of work. In the loss, Reed (6-4) matched a season high with six strikeouts, but allowed three runs on five hits and four walks in six and 1/3 innings. Altobelli as he raced home from third, but missed. The win was the Ducks’ first this season when trailing after eight innings. They had been 0-16. Keudell (11-4), the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year, allowed five runs on four hits in seven innings to earn the 23rd win of his Oregon career, moving past Dean Kegler (1978-81) on the school’s all-time list. Keudell struck out five and walked four. Jimmie Sherfy threw two scoreless innings of relief, getting Fullerton’s Richy Pedroza looking at a called third strike for his 18th save of the season. Oregon (44-17), the No. 5 national seed, improved to 2-0 in the NCAA tournament and will play the winner of the Cal State Fullerton-Austin Peay elimination game Sunday at 4 p.m. at PK Park for a chance to move on to the super regionals. Kyle Garlick’s two-run triple highlighted a four-run first inning for the Ducks, who built a 6-0 lead against Big West Pitcher of the Year Dylan Floro (10-4). Ryon Healy also drove in two runs for Oregon, batting 2-for-4 on the day. Ryan Hambright and Aaron Payne also had two hits apiece for the Ducks. Floro settled down after the first inning, allowing 10 hits and seven runs (five earned) in seven innings. The Titans committed four errors. Keudell cruised through the first four innings, allowing only one hit, before the Titans (36-20) scored all five of their runs in the fifth inning. Michael Lorenzen’s hit a towering, three-run home run to right to cut Fullerton’s deficit to 6-5. It stayed a one-run game until Fullerton made two errors to start the bottom of the eighth, allowing the Ducks to score an insurance run on J.J. Altobelli’s double-play groundout.

With the win, the Ducks (45-17) advanced out of the regionals for the first time since 1954. Baseball returned to Oregon in 2009 after the university eliminated the sport in 1981. Oregon went 3-0 at the regional this weekend and Sunday got its second victory against the Governors (40-24). Oregon needed two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat Austin Peay 6-5 Friday night. No comeback was necessary this time. Reed (7-4), Oregon’s No. 2 starter, was brillant from the start. The freshman allowed just two hits over seven innings with a career-high eight strikeouts. Joey Housey finished off the win with two innings of one-hit relief. The Oregon offense backed Reed up with some early run production. The Ducks went up 1-0 in the first, scoring on a fielder’s choice by Thomas. They added two more in the third on a single by Thomas and sacrifice fly by Kyle Garlick. Brett Hambright added a two-run home run in the seventh inning to make it 8-0. Greg Bachman had two of the Governors’ three hits, including a double to lead off the ninth inning. He eventually scored on a fielding error by Oregon second baseman Aaron Payne. Starter Kacy Kemmer (21) took the loss despite throwing just two innings. The Governors used seven pitchers altogether. Austin Peay needed a 3-0 win against Cal State Fullerton earlier Sunday to advance to the game against Oregon.

Oregon (45-18), the No. 5 national seed, found itself trailing 5-1 before getting its first hit in the fifth inning. The Ducks fought back to a 5-4 deficit in the seventh, but a costly error in right field during the top of the eighth allowed two runs to score as Kent State pushed its lead to a three-run advantage with UO down to its final six outs. Kent State starter David Starn (11-3) allowed four runs on five hits and a damaging seven walks while striking out six before he was lifted in the seventh. Alex Keudell (11-5) battled through two Oregon errors, allowing six runs – just two earned – in seven and 1/3 innings while fanning four. Only two of Kent State’s seven runs were earned as Oregon committed three errors.

After surrendering a run in the fourth, the La Mesa, Calif., native retired nine consecutive batters until giving up a two-out single to Derek Toadvine in the bottom of the seventh. The Ducks (46-18) trailed 2-0 entering seventh, but Oregon finally put the pressure on Kent State starter Ryan Bores, as a wild inning allowed UO to turn a two-run deficit into a one-run, 3-2, advantage. Ryon Healy started the rally with his second hit of the game, roping a single into center field. Brett Thomas followed with a single into left field that troubled Kent State’s Alex Miklos, allowing Healy to score and Thomas to move to second. With a runner in scoring position, Kyle Garlick was walked, but Ryan Hambright delivered a game-tying RBI single that found a hole through the right side. With runners on the corners and just one out, Kent State elected to go to its bullpen, and brought Michael Kent to the mound. With Brett Hambright at the plate, Oregon orchestrated the squeeze as the bunt down proved problematic, allowing Garlick to score the go-ahead run. Bores (9-3) was issued the loss allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four. Healy led Oregon with a 2-for-4 effort as Oregon totaled seven hits on the evening. Oregon freshman left-hander Tommy Thorpe pitched one and 2/3 innings of shutout relief for Reed, matching a career best with four strikeouts.

Rider’s hit off Oregon closer Jimmie Sherfy fell just out of the reach of shortstop J.J. Altobelli and left fielder Brett Thomas, who appeared to lose track of the ball when it was hit. Derek Toadvine scored from second base before Thomas could attempt a throw, making Kent State (46-18) the first team from the Mid-American Conference since Eastern Michigan in 1976 to advance past the NCAA super regional for a trip to Omaha. The play happened so quickly that most of the Ducks remained at their positions on the field as the Kent State dugout and bullpen emptied to join a pile of players near home plate. Trailing 2-0, the Ducks (46-19) tied it in the eighth inning on a single through a hole in the right side of the infield by Ryon Healy that scored Altobelli and Aaron Payne. Healy’s hit was just the fourth - and last - hit of the game for Oregon. Reliever Brian Clark recorded five straight outs for the win after allowing Healy’s single. Kent State went ahead early, scoring two runs on six hits against Oregon starter Jeff Gold, who didn’t make it out of the second inning. The Golden Flashes scored once in the first on a lined single by T.J. Sutton and then again in the second on a bases-loaded double-play grounder by Evan Campbell. Kent State was shut down by the Ducks’ bullpen the rest of the game, getting just one more hit off four relievers. But Oregon could never get to Kent State starter Tyler Skulina, a 6-foot-6 right-hander who allowed just a pair of singles in his 5 2-3 innings.
