2009 OREGON CROSS COUNTRY

NCAA Champion Galen Rupp

Back to Back NCAA Champions Oregon’s cross country teams flourished in the spotlight during the 2008 season as the men captured their second straight NCAA Championship and the women repeated their feat as NCAA runners-up. Along the way, the men won their third straight Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional meets, while the UO women finished second in both races. Led by 2008 NCAA individual champion Galen Rupp, the Duck men produced three All-Americans with senior Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott and freshman Luke Puskedra joining Rupp. The women had three All-America runners for the first time in 21 years in Alexandra Kosinski, Nicole Blood and Mattie Bridgmon. The impressive performance added even more honors to the prolific resume of Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna, who was tabbed the NCAA National Men’s Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

Luke Puskedra

Rupp’s final cross county season concluded with a flourish as he was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year, the USTFCCCA West Regional Athlete of the Year, the Pac-10 Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year and the Pac-10 Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year. It is the first time that one athlete has won those four awards in the same season. Rupp also earned his ninth career All-America award at the 2008 NCAA Championships. NCAA Championships At the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind., Rupp won his first individual title to lead Oregon to its second straight NCAA men’s cross country championship. The women gutted out an impressive second place finish, which was the Ducks’ second straight NCAA runner-up showing. Rupp was one of three top-10 finishers for the men, as the No. 1-ranked Ducks pulled away for a 54-point victory over No. 7 Iona. Oregon tallied 93 points to Iona’s 147 with No. 3 Stanford third at 227.

Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott

Rupp, who set a Gibson Course record in finishing in 29:03.2, became just the third Duck to win the NCAA cross country title. He joins Oregon legends Steve Prefontaine, a three-time winner in 1970-71 and 1973, and Alberto Salazar, who was the Ducks’ last individual champion in 1978. Alexandra Kosinski American performances from Puskedra, who ran fifth in 29:27.8 and was the meet’s top freshman finisher, and Kiptoo-Biwott, who placed ninth in 29:43.4. Oregon had three runners finish in the top 10 for the first time since 1974 (Paul Geis/4th, Dave Taylor/5th and Terry Williams/6th). It was the sixth NCAA men’s cross country championship for the University of Oregon, and school’s 15th NCAA team championship overall. It was also the Ducks’ first back-to-back titles since 1973-74. Oregon’s other NCAA cross country titles came in 1971, 1977 and 2007. Nearly as impressive was the women’s second-straight second place showing. Kosinski and Blood were the catalysts with top-10 finishes. The two ran with the lead pack for much of the race as Kosinski finished eighth in 20:05. Blood was just a step behind her in 10th (20:09). Both runners earned the second cross country All-America awards of their careers. The pair gave Oregon two top-10 individuals for just the second time in school history. In 1991, Lisa Karnopp was third and Lucy Nusrala was eighth. Bridgmon, a transfer from Eastern Washington, ran the race of her life and passed a dozen competitors in the final 200 meters to finish 40th in 20:43.6 and earn her first career All-America award.

Nicole Blood

No. 1 Washington won their first NCAA title with 79 points. Oregon was second with 131 points, a total that was a 46-point improvement over the Ducks’ 2007 mark. NCAA West Regional Rupp won his second straight NCAA West Regional title to lead the Oregon men’s cross country team to victory at the NCAA West Regional at Stanford. Rupp won the race by over 50 seconds, finishing the 10,000-meter course in an NCAA West Regional record time of 27:41.24. With the women finishing second, both Duck teams automatically advanced to the NCAA Championships. The Oregon men were dominant in winning their third straight NCAA West Regional title. It was the program’s seventh overall regional win, and also marked the first time that Oregon has won three straight; the Ducks other four wins came in 1982-83 and 1988-89. Led by a one-two finish from Rupp and Kiptoo-Biwott, the top-ranked Ducks scored 38 points to outdistance No. 3 Stanford, which finished with 72 points. Oregon had three of the top six men’s runners, and all five of the Ducks’ scorers finished in the top 15.

2009 OREGON CROSS COUNTRY Kosinski became Oregon’s first NCAA West Regional women’s champion in 14 years, winning the 6,000-meter race in 19:59.01. The sophomore was the Ducks’ first regional champion since Milena Glusac won the 1994 crown. The Duck women also took the first two places, with Blood following Kosinski across the line. The junior, who was also second at the 2007 NCAA West Regional, finished in 20:01.23. Pac-10 Championships Rupp won his second career individual title to lead top-ranked Oregon to its third consecutive Pacific-10 Conference men’s cross country crown at the Springfield Country Club before a crowd estimated at 5,000 strong. Rupp became just the third Oregon runner to win multiple conference titles and he did so in record fashion. His first place-time of 22:55.14 was :25 better than the previous course record of 23:20. Nearly as impressive as Rupp was Puskedra’s second place dash in 23:32.11. The Ducks also counted a fifth-place finish from Kiptoo-Biwott (23:42.50), a ninth-place finish from Andrew Wheating (23:46.79) and an 11th-place showing from Matthew Centrowitz (23:47.95) for their 28 points. It was the third time in program history that Oregon won three straight titles, the last coming 1988-90. Oregon also accomplished that feat in 1976-79. Oregon’s 28 points were 19 better than second-ranked Stanford’s 47. California and Washington tied for third at 104 points. On the women’s side, Lindsey Scherf and Blood posted top-10 finishes for the Ducks, who finished second behind topranked Washington. Scherf took seventh in 20:15.64, with Blood right behind (20:25.28). Kosinski was 11th for the Ducks in 20:29.61, with Melissa Grelli 14th (20:36.98), Bridgmon 15th (20:41.43) and Zoe Nelson 16th (20:41.91). Bill Dellinger Invitational A pair of youngsters and some senior moxie led the top-ranked Oregon men’s and women’s cross country teams to a sweep of the third annual Bill Dellinger Invitational at the Springfield Country Club. Kosinski won the women’s race, covering the 6,000 meter course in 20:19.90, as Oregon placed five runners in the top nine for an impressive 37 point win. In addition to Kosinski, the Ducks also had Grelli in second (20:20.51), Blood fourth (20:39.56), Bridgmon seventh (20:54.19) and Scherf ninth (20:54.19). The Ducks scored 23 points to pull away from No. 11 Arkansas, which tallied 60. 2008 Bill Dellinger Invitational For the men, Puskedra made a memoraWomen’s Champions ble debut by finishing third in 24:06.90, but it was the gutsy performances of seniors Kiptoo-Biwott and Curtis Suver that helped Oregon overtake No. 5 Alabama and No. 7 Portland for its third straight Dellinger win. Oregon had Puskedra in third, Kiptoo-Biwott in fifth (24:14.41) and Suver, a transfer from Eastern Washington, running eighth (24:26.97). The Ducks finished with 49 points, seven better than Portland’s 56 and 13 ahead of Alabama (62).
