SEASON PREVIEW The University of Oregon soccer team returns 13 letterwinners and eight starters for the 2009 season. New to the squad are 10 freshmen and two assistant coaches, with fifth-year head coach Tara Erickson looking to bring it all together. COACHES Joining Erickson’s coaching staff is Associate Head Coach Lauren Hanson and Assistant Coach Mac Wilson. Hanson comes to UO after having spent nine seasons as both a player and coach with the University of Portland women’s soccer program. Wilson has been a fixture to the Eugene/Springfield area soccer scene, having spent 15 years in the community as both a head coach and a club director. “I think they have both been outstanding additions,” Erickson said. “Not only have they made our team better, but I feel they’ve helped to make me a better coach. They each bring a different vantage point to the game, but collectively we share plenty of ideas.” FORWARDS The Ducks return one of the most able goal scorers in squad history with junior Jen Stoltenberg. The native of Mission Viejo, Calif., led the team with 25 points as she tallied team-highs with 10 goals and five assists. Also returning is Eugene native Adriana Montes, who is back with the Ducks for another season after using a medical redshirt last year. Junior Rianna Mansfield, who played limited minutes in 13 games last season as she recovered from an injury, is poised to regain time on the field. Oregon will also look for contributions from newcomers Julie Armstrong, Chloe Byrne and Kelsey Hones, freshmen that will all vie for playing time alongside Stoltenberg. “We’ve experimented with quite a few looks at forward,” Erickson said. “We’ve seen Rianna Mansfield progress into becoming an outstanding target forward.” Armstrong joins the Ducks with international playing experience after playing for the Canadian National Team at the U-16, U-20 and full team levels. She has earned six international caps for her home country and comes to Eugene with tremendous promise. “Julie Armstrong has brought her stamp to the position. Kelsey Hones and Tahne Apo have both really stepped up and made an impact,” Erickson said. Senior Teresa Bowns will split time up front and in the midfield. Bowns, a senior from Redmond, Wash., was second on the squad in points (13) last season as she scored four goals to go with five assists.

MIDFIELDERS The losses of Allison Newton and Jessica Goodell to graduation will be felt in the midfield, but Erickson and the Ducks have players ready to prove themselves this season. Junior Kirstie Kuhns returns as one of the leaders after registering two goals and two assists in 19 matches a year ago. The previously mentioned Bowns will bring an offensive minded mentality to the midfield. Bowns ranks second all-time in school history with 13 career assists, while tied for second with five game-winning assists. Her 31 career points (9 goals, 13 assists) is sixth in the school record-book.

SEASON PREVIEW Sophomore Taylor Jones and freshmen Tahne Apo, Annah Kennedy, Scout Libke and Maddy Mercier will all look to earn playing time in the midfield.

Redshirt freshmen Lauren Thompson will compete for time at the center back position. True freshmen Nicole Bakke and Christina Farrell could also see action in the back line.

“Kirstie Kuhns has continued to hold down her role in the defensive mid,” Erickson said. “I expect Teresa Bowns, Taylor Jones, and some of the true freshmen to also make contributions in the midfield.”

“Mercedes Walters has had the winter and spring to adjust from defender to the midfield,” Erickson said. “Lauren Thompson and Nicole Bakke have looked good at the center-back position.”

DEFENDERS The defense will be without three of their four starters from the 2008 squad, with Nicole Dobrzynski, Darcie Gardner and Carrie Holland graduating from the program.

GOALKEEPERS When three-year starter Jessie Chatfield was lost prior to her senior season in 2008 due to an injury, the Ducks looked to true freshman Cody Miles to take command of that key position on the pitch.

The Ducks return standout Danielle Sweeney, a senior who has played and started in all 60 matches in her three-year career. Fellow senior Dani Oster, transitioning from the midfield, also comes with 60 matches of experience.

Miles thrived in her starting role, holding a tough schedule of opponents to a 1.55 goals against average and tallying 76 saves in 1,845 minutes of play. Miles posted a goalkeeper record of 9-9-2 en route to a Pac-10 All-Freshmen Team selection.

“We have Danielle Sweeney holding down her left back role, and Dani Oster has moved to right back,” Erickson said. “I think that Sweeney and Oster provide a great attacking outside back combination on either side of the field.”

Joining her in the net this year will be junior Tori Johnson, who saw game action twice in 2008, and true freshman Casey Wilhelm, a native of College Station, Tex.

Other experienced defenders include juniors Bree Rowe and Sara Plutko, who have both seen action at the position during their first two seasons at UO. Junior Mercedes Walters moves into the back line from the midfield where she played all of last season.

“Cody Miles has the edge because of the time she has spent in goal,” Erickson said. “I would say that Tori Johnson has worked equally hard to maintain her position. I like that there is a three-way battle for that position – with Cody, Tori and now Casey Wilhelm joining the group.”

The Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) honored Oregon’s Pape’ Field with its prestgious 2008-09 Field of the Year Award for the university and college soccer division. Pape’ Field is maintained by the staff of the Oregon grounds crew, who’s work on the Kilkenny Practice Field previously won the 2007 Field of the Year Award for football. Back-to-back awards going to the same organization have occurred just a handful of times since the awards program was started in 1992, and the University of Oregon joins an elite class as a two-time FOY Award winner.
