2010 REVIEW
What a Finish! A world record, a fourth straight league title and a 1-2-3 finish at the NCAA Championships were but three of the highlights from a dramatic 2010 men’s track and field season. The year began with a bang when the multitalented Ashton Eaton broke the world record in the heptathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Eaton, the 2010 Bowerman Award winner, scored 6,499 points to break Dan O’Brien’s 1993 world record. He then came back at the end of the meet to run a leg on the Ducks’ sixthplace 4x400 meter relay team. The NCAA indoor meet also saw Olympian Andrew Wheating lead Oregon to a thrilling come-frombehind win in the distance medley relay and he later was the runner-up at 800 meters. Freshman Mac Fleet impressed in his first NCAA meet with a runner-up finish in the mile, while senior A.J Acosta was fourth as the Ducks tied for second as a team. In addition to Eaton’s school (and world) record in the heptathlon, Wheating set the UO indoor record in the 800 meters (1:46.36), while Fleet set the school indoor standard in the mile (3:57.70).
Ashton Eaton
The outdoor season saw some truly memorable performances at Historic Hayward Field. The Ducks defeated Texas A&M, Washington, Illinois and Missouri in an exciting Pepsi Team Invitational. Fleet and Travis Thompson led a 1-3 finish in the 800 meters, while Matthew Centrowitz and Michael Maag went 1-3 in the 1,500. Eaton won the 110 hurdles and the long jump, while Jordan Stray won the hammer and David Klech and Danny Marconi tied for first in the high jump. After rolling to a win in their annual dual meet with UCLA, the Ducks made a rare appearance at the Penn Relays, where they came home with a pair of coveted “Wagon Wheels.” The team of Centrowitz, Chad Barlow, Fleet and Wheating won the distance medley relay, while Fleet, Maag, Acosta and Centrowitz won the 4xMile relay. Then it was off to Berkeley, Calif., where the Ducks topped USC to win their fourth straight Pac-10 title. Eaton was named the athlete of the meet for being the highest individual point scorer. His remarkable league championships included wins in the decathlon (his third straight), 110 meter hurdles and long jump and a second-place finish in the 100 meters. He also ran a leg on the Ducks’ fourth-place 4x100 meter relay squad. Oregon counted additional victories from Wheating at 800 - his third straight, Centrowitz in the 1,500 and Cyrus Hosteter in the javelin. The Ducks also saw a remarkable performance from Acosta, who was second in the 1,500, third in the 5,000 and fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Greer was the runner-up at 800 meters, while Marshall Ackley was third in the decathlon. Oregon scored 168.5 points to edge past USC, which had the highest non-winning total in league history with 156 points.

The showcase of the season was the NCAA Outdoor Championships, hosted by Oregon. Historic Hayward Field saw record-breaking attendance as 45,847 fans packed the stands for the four-day event. The home team provided the signature moment of the meet when Wheating, Acosta and Centrowitz finished 1-2-3 in the 1,500 meters. It was the first time in NCAA history that a school swept the top three spots at 1,500 meters. Wheating’s time was 3:47.94, followed by Acosta in 3:48.01 and Centrowitz in 3:48.08. Wheating’s win was all the more amazing due to the fact that he won the 800 a day earlier in 1:45.69. He became the first man to win both the 800 and 1,500 since Oregon’s Joaquim Cruz in 1984, and only the fifth to do it overall. Oregon also saw a remarkable performance from Eaton, who became the first person ever to win three consecutive NCAA decathlon titles. He claimed the 2010 crown by scoring a meet, Pac-10 and school record 8,457 points. Jordan McNamara added an eighth-place showing in the 5,000 meters for the Ducks, who took the third place trophy. In addition to the point-scorers, Oregon also counted All-Americans in the hammer (Stray), javelin (Hostetler) and 10,000 meters (Luke Puskedra). Oregon was named the national John McDonnell Program of the Year for the second year in a row. After the college season, Wheating went on to set the school record in the mile at the Prefontaine Classic, running 3:51.74 in his final race in an Oregon singlet. Also during the summer, Acosta tied Cruz’s school record in the 1,500 meters, running 3:36.48 at a meet in Belgium.

2010 REVIEW
Sprinting to an NCAA Crown The 2010 season arguably was the best ever for the Women of Oregon. With strong showings in the sprints, distances, jumps and combined events, the Ducks won their first NCAA Indoor national championship and finished as the runners-up at the NCAA Outdoor meet. Oregon also laid claim to the Pac-10 crown for the second straight season. The Ducks counted impressive victories in the pentathlon and the 4x400 meter relay in winning the NCAA Indoor title for the first time in school history. The 4x400 relay squad consisting of Jamesha Youngblood, Keshia Baker, Michele Williams and Amber Purvis ran a school record 3:32.97 to capture the Ducks firstever NCAA relay title. Brianne Theisen backed that effort with her second consecutive NCAA win in the pentathlon, scoring a school record 4,396 points.
Keshia Baker
The Ducks also showed great depth across the board, with Baker finishing as the runner-up at 400 meters in a school record 51.63, Melissa Gergel taking second in the pole vault with a school recrd clearance (147.25/4.45m) and the distance medley relay team of Anne Kesselring, Williams, Zoe Buckman and Jordan Hasay placing second in a school record 10:58.96. Oregon received even more contributions from Purvis in the 60 meters (third), Hasay (fourth) and Kesselring (sixth) in the mile and Nicole Blood in the 3,000 meters (fifth). Oregon set an incredible 10 school records during the 2010 indoor campaign with Purvis in the 60 (7.30) and 200 (23.21), Blood in the 5,000 meters (15:51.59), Theisen in the 60 meter hurdles (8.40) and Youngblood in the long jump (21-6.25/6.56m), joining the two relays, Baker in the 400 and Theisen in the pentathlon. The records continued to fall during the outdoor season. At the end of it all, the Ducks were named the national Terry Crawford Program of the Year for the second year in a row. Early, the Ducks scored an impressive win over Texas A&M, Washington and Missouri at the Pepsi Team Invitational. Among the individual victories for the Ducks were Purvis in the 100 and 200 meters, Kesselring at 800 meters, Hasay at 5,000 meters, Claire Michel in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Theisen in the high jump, Jordan Roskelley in the pole vault, Youngblood in the long jump and Sara Cole in the hammer. Those performances set the stage for a record-setting showing at the Pac-10 Championships at Berkeley, Calif., where Oregon won 12 events en route to scoring a league-record 215 points.
Rita Santibanez
Among the winners for the Ducks were impressive doubles by Blood at 5,000 and 10,000 meters, Purvis at 100 and 200 meters and Youngblood in the long and triple jumps. Youngblood became just the second woman to win both jump titles two years in a row. Other individual champions included Baker at 400 meters for the third straight season, Kesselring at 800 meters, Buckman at 1,500 meters, Michel in the steeplechase and Theisen in the heptathlon for the second straight time. The 4x100 meter relay team of Mandy White, Purvis, Baker and Youngblood also won in a school record 43.27. Theisen added a runner-up finish in the high jump, and a fourth-place run in the 100 meter hurdles to earn performer of the meet honors as the high individual point scorer. Other top three finishers included Baker in the 200 (second), Williams in the 400 (third), Buckman in the 800 (third), Hasay in the 1,500 (third), Alexandra Kosinski in the 5,000 (second), Mattie Bridgmon in the 10,000 (second) and Gergel in the pole vault (third). The performance at the Pac-10 meet catapulted Oregon into the NCAA Championships, where the Ducks were the national runners-up for the second year in a row. Among the key performances was an impressive victory in the 4x400 meter relay, with Theisen leading off, followed by Purvis, then Williams and finally Baker, who ran a brilliant final leg to hold off a furious challenge from Texas A&M. The quartet clocked a school record 3:28.54. Theisen added her second consecutive NCAA title in the heptathlon, scoring a school-record 6,094 points. The Ducks also saw third-place performances from Hasay in the 1,500, Kosinski at 5,000 and Blood in the 10,000 meters, in addition to the 4x100 meter relay team of White, Purvis, Baker and Youngblood. Baker was fourth in the 400, while Youngblood was fourth in the long jump and Kesselring placed sixth in the 800. Oregon also garnered its first All-America honors at 100 meters thanks to White’s ninth-place finish.
Zoe Buckman
In addition to the school records that fell in the relays and the heptathlon, Purvis set the school mark in the 100 (11.38) and 200 meters (22.74), while Baker snapped her own 400 meter record in 50.76. Theisen set the 100 meter hurdles mark (13.39), while Michel reset the steeplechase record (10:11.70). Youngblood set records in both the long jump (21-9/6.63m) and triple jump (43-5/13.23) as a total of 10 outdoor records fell in 2010.
