Letter from the Editor RELAXING INTO FALL Fall is my favorite season. Autumn is the season of slowing down, and settling in. The hearth welcomes once more, the kitchen with its warmth and pleasant aromas beckons. A brisk walk under the changing leaves of trees is followed by a warm cup of tea and time with family and friends. The sun sets a bit earlier, allowing us to relax after the bustle of summer and enjoy the comforts of home once more. We enter this fall differently than autumns past, as many of us continue to work and school from home. In this issue, we celebrate ways to make the most of time spent on the home front. Read about creating multipurpose spaces for kids in our feature “Kid Zone.” We examine furniture trends for fall and design tricks for giving your bathroom a pop of personality. Big, bold floral patterns bright with color are in style, and sure to perk up any space in your home with cheerful punch. Maybe you’re looking for a new neighborhood to call home. Read about the city of Sisters, a longstanding favorite for residents seeking a small town big with culture. Much newer is the neighborhood of Discovery West, launched earlier this year by the team that created NorthWest Crossing. Read all about this new planned development and how you can acquire a homesite of your own on Bend’s west side. We highlight the work of amazing local professionals and shop owners here, too. Architect Karen Smuland teamed with designer Kirsti Wolfe to fashion an incredible home in the foothills of Bend, featured on our cover. Their inspiration comes to life in this issue. Local business Scott’s Roofing has launched a new company, Caliber Metal, based on the innovation of cutting roofing metal right on site. In NorthWest Crossing, White Iris carries gorgeous accessories and design pieces for your home. Take in the images of this shop’s lovely inventory in these pages, and then make a trip to the store yourself. Above all, take advantage of this season’s invitation to relax and take in the beauty of both the outdoors and indoors. We wish you a fabulous fall! . Kim Cooper Findling Editor

Transportation Bond Back on the Ballot HOME PRICES ON THE RISE
The housing market is hotter than ever in Central Oregon, driven by a low inventory, low interest rates and plenty of buyers from more-dense urban regions looking for a better quality of life. July saw a 12.5 percent increase in single family home prices in Bend, with some home sales going for 5 to 10 percent above the asking price. The median price of a single-family home in Bend vaulted forward to $529,000, an increase of $59,000 compared to the same time the year before, according to the Beacon Appraisal Group. In July there were 318 sales, compared to last year’s 239 sales during the same period. In addition, in July there were eighty-four sales for homes $700,000 and up, compared to June with fifty-four sales. Sales data and trends were far more stable in Redmond. The median sales price in Redmond was $345,000, a 2% increase over the same period a year before. Redmond, too, has a limited supply of homes for sale, with just about a one-month supply, according to the report.
After voting to delay a public vote on the May ballot, the Bend City Council voted in August to put the General Obligation Transportation Bond on the November ballot. The bond will bring in a projected $190 million to fund improvements to east-west connections, projects to ease traffic congestion and a network of cross-town bike and pedestrian routes. It will cost the average homeowner $170 a year. The bond proposal includes $25 million for a network of twelve key multi-modal routes running north/south and east/west, designed as “low stress” networks for commuting. A number of capital projects included will contribute to noticeable traffic improvements. Public transit may also benefit if a transportation bond passes. The proposed bond would also support a number of ODOT projects along Highway 97. For more information see bendoregon.gov.
Built more than 100 years ago, the retaining wall that separates Drake Park from Mirror Pond is set for removal. Bend Park and Recreation plans to proceed with a river trail improvement project that will remove the existing river wall, create a riparian area with low growing vegetation, and install an ADA compliant pathway that will run throughout Drake Park and connect to nearby Pacific Park. The existing wall is in disrepair, and the park district hopes to move towards a more natural solution, while improving trails and accessibility. See bendparksandrec.org.

NEW DISTILLERY OPENS IN LA PINE Add Badlands Artisan Distillery to your list of locally made libations to try. The new distillery, operated by Trevor Mayfield and Russ Scott, opened this summer at Scott’s family logging mill on Finley Butte Road in La Pine. The new location isn’t a tasting room, but visitors can take a tour and purchase a bottle at the space. The products include cucumber gin made with locally sourced cucumbers and finished in American oak wine barrels and winecask vodka, filtered using Newberry Caldera spring water and local lava rock. The distillery also produces a plum and sloe berry vodka, made using locally grown European plums and sloe berries. Next in the lineup are cold brew vodka and Canadian blend whisky. In addition to the distillery, bottles are also available in a handful of Central Oregon liquor stores, including Trailhead Liquor, Bend South Liquor Store and Third Street Beverage in Bend, Sunriver Liquor Store and La Pine Liquor. Home delivery is also available in Bend, Sunriver and La Pine. See badlandsdistillery.com.

More Free Parking on the way for Redmond Finding a parking spot in downtown Redmond is about to get a bit easier. Redmond’s Urban Renewal Agency this summer moved forward with a plan to add much-needed free parking to downtown Redmond. The agency approved a plan to tear down the former City Hall building on Evergreen Avenue. Demolition took place in August on the outdated, obsolete structures with plans for expanding parking to ultimately offer 120 spots at the site. The $1.09 million project should wrap up by the end of the year. “Our businesses and customers need more free parking
that is within walking distance of the commercial core. As the years pass, this block will eventually become a mix of housing and retail—but right now, parking is the imperative,” said Chuck Arnold, Redmond’s Urban Renewal Manager. The city’s Urban Renewal Plan aims to support existing businesses and attract new investment, as well as managing a Public Parking Fund, ensuring the city’s growing customer and business needs downtown are met with adequate parking. New Ownership, Vision for Central Oregon Brewery
Expect a fresh look and other changes at one of the region’s longstanding breweries, following an ownership change earlier this year. Cascade Lakes Brewing, which got its start in Central Oregon in 1994, has new owners—father and son Bruce and Andy Rhine and business partner Bill Valentine. The younger Rhine, a chemical engineer and process specialist, is now serving as general manager, and will work to improve the quality and consistency of the company’s products. “As new owners, together we look forward to taking this small, independent craft brewery to the next level,” Andy Rhine said. “We know it will be a difficult challenge. The craft beer market is saturated, but there is no monopoly on community or fun.” Rhine said the brewery plans to explore new styles of beer to produce, as well as debuting hard seltzers and ciders. Lakes operates two brewpubs—the 7th Street Brew House in Redmond and Cascade Lakes Lodge in Bend and distributes beer in Oregon, Washington, California, Alaska, Idaho and Montana. Down the road, the company hopes to open additional brewpubs on the east side of Bend and in Redmond. See cascadelakes.com.
OSU-Cascades has tapped Erika McCalpine to lead a new laboratory dedicated to advancing social equity and inclusion in Central Oregon. McCalpine is part of the OSU-Cascades business faculty, and has also been a champion of social justice issues in the region. McCalpine said she was eager to take the helm of the new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Laboratory. “The recent national social unrest has heightened awareness in our community of the systemic racism many people of color experience as a part of daily life,” McCalpine said. “The DEI lab will leverage the strong local desire to create more inclusive work environments and more welcoming communities for current and future generations.” Training
sessions for local business leaders kicked off over the summer, offering guidance for fostering diversity and inclusivity in the workplace. The lab also will provide consulting services for area businesses, agencies and nonprofit organizations, advising employers on hiring practices, unconscious bias and other issues. The lab also plans to involve undergraduate student interns for research and outreach. “We’re fortunate to have a thoughtful and collaborative leader like Erika to lead the DEI Lab,” said Becky Johnson, vice president of OSU-Cascades. “I’m confident the lab will advance social justice in Central Oregon and help people of color find equal opportunity to succeed.” See osucascades.edu.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion focus of new Bend Park and Recreation program
Leaders with the Bend Park and Recreation District plan to spend the next year or longer to develop a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion program, with plans to engage staff, the Board of Directors and community partners and residents. The first step this year will be to hire a consultant to help develop a scope of what the program may entail, and then to guide the district through the process to create and implement the DEI program. At the same time, staff are participating in a statewide Oregon Recreation and Parks Association diversity committee and are working closely with other agencies to learn how they have approached and served their communities. “Our goal is to make sure our plan works for Bend now and in the future,” said Michelle Healy, deputy executive director, BPRD. “While every park and recreation agency and community have different needs, we think there is value in gaining insights into what went well, what could have been done better, and what ultimately has proven to be successful for others.” See bendparksandrec.org.
BEND RESIDENT IS CENTRAL OREGON’S MASTER GARDENER OF THE YEAR Bend’s Kathleen Geary was one of several Master Gardeners across the state recognized this summer for their volunteer efforts as part of the OSU Extension Master Gardener Program. Geary was named “Master Gardener of the Year” representing Central Oregon. “The awards for Master Gardener of the year recognize an individual’s leadership, impact and support of the mission of the program: garden education,” said LeAnn Locher, OSU Master Gardener outreach program coordinator. Geary first earned her certification as a Master Gardener in 2015, and is part of the Central Oregon Master Gardener Association, where she helps to educate the community about gardening. She contributes to the KPOV radio segment, “Gardening: Get Good At It” and plant clinics, where she answers gardening questions. Geary started gardening at an early age, tending herbs, vegetables and flowers in her mother’s garden. “I grew to understand the growing cycle of plants, and was captivated by the importance of the bees and insects that pollinated the garden

that produced my mother’s endless bounty.” Geary said we’re fortunate in Central Oregon to have a community that cares for one another, as evidenced by the sharing of resources during the pandemic. “Precarious times call for strength in numbers and gardeners have it all. We grow gardens of vegetables, fruits and flowers for ourselves, and we grow our gardens to share with others,” Geary said. See extension.oregonstate.edu/mg/central.

s there anything original to say about Sisters anymore? The views are stunning. The food scene is producing some of the most delicious bites this side of the Cascades. There are seemingly infinite trails and lakes to explore within a half-hour drive of town. With the addition of Laird Superfoods’ headquarters and manufacturing, the town is building a local economy that can withstand tourism boom and busts. So why don’t we all live there already? Judging by the real estate market this year, it seems we might all be trying to.

Since bottoming out in 2011, the real estate values in Sisters have continued to climb at a rate on pace with the rest of Central Oregon. In 2015, the median home value was around $300,000. Today, it’s almost $500,000, according to Zillow. Real estate broker Jennifer McCrystal described the current Sisters real estate scene as “very active.” She answered a few questions over the phone while she was attending a home inspection in Pine Meadow Village, a planned community in Sisters. “Houses are going so fast,” she said. at just under $300,000 and a home in the Village at Cold Springs valued at $360,000 both had immediate offers over asking price. The rush for home buyers in Sisters wasn’t anything new before COVID-19, but the urge to find a home with more space, potentially an office, and a smaller town with more outdoor recreation led a lot of buyers to the town more recently. “What I’m finding is, I have a lot of clients who are wanting to retire in the next few years, and instead have made the decision to do so now,” she said. “They’re coming from the [Willamette] Valley, San Francisco and Portland.” Some may recognize McCrystal as the former owner of the Cottonwood Cafe (previously known as Jen’s Garden). She recently sold the café and transitioned fulltime to real estate. “When I moved here fourteen years ago it was a retirement community,” she said. “Now, it’s much more developed. Neighborhoods are filling in. Now there are

cuts through downtown Sisters. He’s been a resident since 1998 and opened his pottery business in 2002. “For the most part it’s all been pretty good change,” Merrill said. “New businesses, new buildings. It seems like the city has progressed with the growth pretty well.” The growth also brought better trail maintenance, more restaurants and more foot traffic to his store. “We’re getting more families coming here,” he said. “It’s a cool mix of people. There’s lots of stuff going on all the time.” One of the new businesses, Laird Superfoods, has based its manufacturing in Sisters, and is poised for even more growth. In April, the plant-based superfood creator received $10 million in venture capital to increase its operations. The company employs more than 100 people. The locally owned businesses, the new restaurants and the growing neighborhoods are all well and good, but there’s still really one factor that pulls people in and makes them want to settle down here. “It’s just the beauty of Sisters,” Merrill said. “We’re located in a place with the views of the mountains and the trails and the creeks and the lakes. I see it in my gallery—everyone is talking about wanting to live here. They come here and they’re like, ‘I really want to move here.’ We feel fortunate to live here, especially in the times we’re in.”

hris Herrick and John Coltman moved to Bend thirteen years ago and built a custom home in NorthWest Crossing. In the past few years, they’d been looking for a change, but couldn’t quite find the right place to build another new home. The pair wanted to stay near the amenities and trails that they’d so enjoyed in NorthWest Crossing, but they also wanted to design and build a home that would be better for their long-term future. “We’ve been waiting for a lot big enough to build a one-story house,” Herrick said. “We found it in Discovery West.” Discovery West is the latest development of NWX2 LLC, the developers of the wildly popular Bend neighborhood NorthWest Crossing. Located on the westside of Bend, tucked into the land between NorthWest Crossing and the Tree Farm, and near Summit High School and Discovery Park, the 245-acre neighborhood will ultimately be built out in seventeen phases and include 650 residences. Discovery West residents will have access to forty acres of parks, miles of trails, and all of the amenities of NorthWest Crossing, including restaurants, shops, services and schools. “Discovery” is more than just a name in this promising new development. “Our goal is to create a neighborhood that celebrates little, everyday discoveries, from neighborhood artwork to the street names that are named after women who have made great discoveries in history,” said Valerie Yost, director of marketing for Brooks Resources. Discovery West is being developed under the “transect” concept of urbanism, where density decreases the farther you get from the urban core, which helps to mitigate negative impacts on wildlife and the threat of wildfire spread. Denser at its center, the neighborhood will include single-family homes, attached live-work townhomes, cottages, detached and attached single family residences, and multifamily residences. Estate lots for custom homesites on the western boundary will be up to one-acre in size. Discovery West has plans for affordable housing in its development as well. “We have a goal to create a mixed income multifamily dwelling. We’re seeking the right developer for that project, which we intend for Phase Five,” Schueler said. itting west of Bend, three wedges unite into a winning 3,900-square-foot home that blurs the lines between inside and out. Dubbed the “Pod House,” by architect Karen Smuland, the genesis for the arrangement of three house sections as pods was rooted in the owners’ wish for specifically designated private, common and guest spaces that would be separated by useful outdoor spaces and tied together by glass hallways. “The owners have frequent guests and are very sports and outdoor oriented,” said Smuland, “so they wanted separation but also a very strong connection between inside and the outdoors.”

Each pod is angled toward a different mountain view: the master bedroom pod captures Mt. Bachelor; the center living pod, which encompasses the kitchen and living and dining areas, looks out beyond a bocce ball court to Broken Top; and the guest pod, which includes two guest suites, a rec room with bunks for additional guests and the mudroom/ laundry connection to the garage, is focused on the northern Cascades. While the views and purpose of each section differ, all pods share exterior designs and materials. Each has a tall ceiling, windows allowing natural light from multiple directions and a standingseam aluminum shed roof angled to
showcase the views, and they are clad with tongue-and-groove cedar siding. Gray composite panels on non-pod areas complement the wood, and stonework grounds the structure to its site. Many of the same materials are woven into the house as well. This is especially true in the construction of the living pod, which is bisected by a continuous cantilevered roof that extends outside from the front porch, runs inside over the dining area and then continues out over the patio on the west side of the home. The cantilevered construction precludes the necessity of viewobscuring support columns, and the same cedar is used on the ceilings of the

porches and interior to provide a seamless blend of in and out. The expansive effect is augmented by large accordion doors at the western porch that open the house to the whole outdoors. To provide extended usability of the Cascade-facing west side porch, heaters were recessed into the underside of the roof, and to provide a feature unique to the owners and the site, a compass rose was installed in the pavers of the patio. On the inside of the home, Smuland worked with Bend-based
40
interior designer Kirsti Wolfe with whom she had successfully collaborated in the past. Taking her cues from Smuland’s design, Wolfe brought the colors and textures of the surrounding landscape inside. In the living pod for example, stone on the outside of the home was brought in to surround the offset fireplace. And the spectacular cedar ceiling has the counter point of a large live edge walnut dining table below and alder wood cabinetry in the kitchen. Elsewhere in the kitchen, Wolfe used fusion quartzite as the counter on the large island. Known for its stunning combination of colors, the counter shows white to symbolize the mountains, green to represent the surrounding trees and waves of blue in a nod to the Deschutes. “I love designing interiors that complement the architecture of the home,” said Wolfe. Slight angles used throughout the home to provide architectural interest and pivot views toward the mountains are repeated in the bathroom shower tiles and the shape of the kitchen island. Colors and finishes are subdued and neutral to reflect the outdoor palette and to ensure there are no distractions when looking out one of the home’s twenty-nine windows. Both Smuland and Wolfe married aesthetics with the practical. Counters and other features are constructed of natural and low maintenance materials to address the owners’ wish for a house that is easy to care for. In the end, the architect and interior designer incorporated the owners’ wish list and love of Central Oregon to create a home that is beautiful to look at, welcoming to visit and easy to live in.

ne visit to White Iris Home Décor in Bend’s Northwest Crossing neighborhood, and inspiration will strike. Browse through the carefully selected housewares such as welldesigned, hand-crafted vases, unique candle holders, a wide variety of eye-catching dishware, napkin rings and amazing centerpiece items, and suddenly those who walk in the shop will be looking forward to hosting their next special dinner with friends and family. It won’t be just another meal, but an opportunity for a new design, or “tablescape” to adorn the dining room or patio table. That’s just the way owner Lisa Stewart envisioned it when she opened her new store in July. “It is something I have been passionate about forever, and it has always been my dream,” said Stewart, who moved to Bend with her husband Will in 2018. Raised in California, after almost thirty years in the corporate finance world, Stewart decided it was time for a change. So six years ago, her then-fiancé convinced her to leave the profession behind and move to their second home in Jackson Hole for a reset. While in Wyoming, she became a regular customer at a home design boutique in the heart of Jackson Hole. “I would

go there all the time,” said Stewart, who ended up working part-time at the store, spending all her earnings on the beautiful products sold there. “I don’t think I ever brought home a paycheck, it just went all back to the store,” she said. “I hoped to own a similar store of my own someday.” Fast forward to December 2019, and while in NorthWest Crossing for a glass of wine, Stewart and her husband saw an empty shop that was available. motion. And finally, this July, after a bit of a pandemic delay, she opened the doors to White Iris Home Décor. “I named the store after my mom’s favorite flower,” said Stewart, whose mother passed away last year at 91. “She would have been so proud of me for fulfilling my dream.” Inside White Iris you will find a selection of lamps, mirrors and furniture in addition to a large variety of high-end brands like Italian pewter from Match1995, dinnerware from Vietri and serving pieces from Beatriz Ball and Vagabond House. You will also find more cost-conscious products, all items that help turn any house into an inviting, well-decorated home. Stewart holds dear the importance of uplifting other businesses within our community, so the shop proudly carries a variety of sleek, stylish candles and scent diffusers from a local female-owned company, Wild Currant Candle. You will also find beautifully crafted totes and tea towels on display from another small, female-owned company, Honey Brush Design. Stewart’s hope is to add more locally sourced offerings in the near future.

“
A BEAUTIFUL SPACE MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD. I SIMPLY BELIEVE EVERYONE WANTS TO LIVE BEAUTIFULLY.
”
When visiting the store, don’t be afraid to ask for help while browsing, as sometimes a creative thought or helpful recommendation might just be what a customer needs, Stewart said. Stewart is also developing a décor consultation program, where she can offer customized advice to help customers create the home of their dreams. Stewart said she’s always valued the importance of a thoughtfully designed room, from the dining table and throughout the entire house. “A beautiful space makes you feel good,” she said. “I simply believe everyone wants to live beautifully.”

s high-quality metal roofing continues to grow in popularity in Central Oregon, you’re likely to see a new company cutting and preparing the materials at job sites around the region. Caliber Metal Manufacturing and Supply is the newest venture from husband and wife team Scott and Stacy Rightmire, who have owned and operated Scott’s Roofing in the area for the past seenteen years. Caliber Metal began operation in early September, using a portable metal machine to make roof-ready metal cuts on the job site, something unique in the world of metal roofing. “We just decided it was needed here in Central Oregon,” said Stacy Rightmire. The couple has noticed the rising popularity of metal fabricated roofs, which are higher quality and last longer than more common composite roofing. Metal roofs used to look less sophisticated and weren’t as popular, Rightmire said, but materials and design have improved over the years. While demand has gone up, in most cases the metal roofing is cut off-site and delivered to projects, creating a transportation challenge and the possibility of issues with the roofing panels, both problems that

IT’S A CLEAN CUT RIGHT ON SITE. YOU DON’T DAMAGE THE METAL BECAUSE YOU’RE NOT DELIVERING IT.
”
Caliber Metal won’t have to worry about. “It’s a clean cut right on site,” Stacy said. “You don’t damage the metal because you’re not delivering it, and if the roof is long or steep, it’s a great benefit as that can be hard to transport when it’s pre-cut.” Caliber Metal will not install the metal roofs themselves, but will work with existing roofing companies, including Scott’s Roofing, general contractors and homeowners who are installing roofing themselves. In addition to the portable metal cutting machine, the company also has the necessary equipment for all the trim pieces, essentially being able to hand off a ready-to-go roofing kit to the installer. Both Central Oregonians since they were young children, the Rightmires have watched as the local construction industry has ebbed and flowed, getting busy in recent years as the population booms. Their children have pitched in at Scott’s Roofing over the years, and today the company employs twenty-eight people in the region. They’ve hired a couple new employees to help run Caliber Metal, and they are eager to see what the future has in store. s days grow shorter, autumn ushers us indoors and causes us to rethink our concept of space, including form, function—and furniture. When it comes to crafting the perfect home, the right furnishings simultaneously reveal the purpose of each room as well as your personal style. If you’re searching for a theme in current furniture trends, simply look out a window, where elements from the outdoors are inspiring the way we live and work. An increased interest in sustainability, for example, has led to the renewed popularity of vintage and antique pieces. Other trends, like furnishings with natural fibers and organic lines seem to point toward a collective desire to make more meaningful connections with the natural world. RISE OF RATTAN While the word “wicker” may evoke memories from the 1970s, rattan is enjoying a renaissance that looks very different from your grandparents’ back porch. Originally crafted from palm stems (rattan refers to the material, wicker is a type of weave), rattan has the warm color and casual look of wood, without the weight. Durable and pliable, it can be woven into playful shapes and patterns that fit with any style and space. When buying rattan, limit the look—less cane can be more. Choose an accent table or armchair to make a room pop, then balance textures by mixing with other natural materials such as stone, wood and iron. Also, consider where each piece will be used; natural rattan lasts better indoors while synthetic versions made from resin or intercepted ocean plastics are more weatherfriendly and best suited for outdoor use.

back to basics EMBRACE THE BEND When it comes to furniture design, certain styles circle back around. Unconventional yet inviting, curved shapes in sofas, side tables, chairs and rugs introduce a retro, relaxed feel that fits perfectly in a laid back town like Bend. Organic lines can soften the sharp, right angles of modular styles, while contoured edges and rounded backs make any seating situation a little more comfy. Ready to round out a room? Start small with a practical pouf or spherical lighting for a more subtle look. To make a statement, try a curved sofa (also called a conversational or crescent sofa) paired with a round or oval coffee table to complement the curvature. With no corners, round tables work great in tight spaces, and pedestal tables offer even more leg room. Finally, create a more intimate setting—and fit in more guests—by floating sectionals and tables in the center of the room, away from the walls.
SECONDHAND SUSTAINABILITY Want to save the planet? Go antique shopping. As environmental concerns change public attitudes toward consumption, one of the simplest ways to stop furniture from going to the landfill is to shop vintage for your home. The rising popularity of antiques indicates a return to traditional décor
54

that is well-crafted, unique and sometimes even a steal of a deal. From your family’s attic to local stores and online marketplaces, options for sourcing pre-owned pieces are everywhere. When styling secondhand, feel free to experiment with different styles and periods. Seasoned brown furniture doesn’t have to date your home; grandma’s mahogany chest may liven up the most modern room. Also, look for opportunities to upcycle slightly worn items; a fresh coat of paint or reupholstery can revive many a thrift store find. Most importantly, choose pieces that tell a story or fit your personality, regardless of brand or historical significance. If you love it, it’s a home run.

year ago, most families spent their days away from home: in classrooms, gyms and offices. Designing spaces for kids meant choosing fun bedroom colors and décor, and homes were more of a refuge to enjoy after the school and workday finished. The COVID-19 pandemic and stay-at-home guidelines have brought a new normal to how families live in their homes. These days, busy families need to incorporate work, school, play and fitness into their home life, and seek spaces that flex to accommodate more activities—especially for kids. Design for the younger generation now involves much more than choosing paint and bedding. From toddlers to teens, kids need quiet spaces to study and read, loud spaces to move and blow off steam, creativity stations for messy art projects, and ways to connect virtually with friends. Their parents need room, too, for home offices and exercise. How can one household do it all while keeping kids organized, happy and productive?
PHOTO TOP COURTES Y OF NES TINGWITHGR ACE.COM
CREATING FLEXIBLE KID SPACES Designers suggest the first step is a fresh look at underutilized spaces. Attics, basements, even that nook under the stairs can be reimagined into kid zones. Cluttered closets can transform into study spaces (AKA a cloffice, or closet-office) with a countertop desk backed with corkboards or whiteboards. An empty wall can become a climbing gym, studded with rock wall hand and footholds. And that nook under the stairs? Perfect for a cozy reading hideaway. Sometimes the best way to find extra space is to look up. Lofted platforms double the usable space. Small lofts create play areas with storage below, or loft the whole bed. Keep it low for little ones with easy access steps and a slide, or raise it up college dorm-style for teens, with an inviting study area or a hammock hung below. Even the ceiling can come into play, with monkey bars or hanging rings. Creative use of partition walls makes dividing shared spaces easier. Whether used to split a bedroom for two kids, or separate a playroom into quiet and active sides, partitions offer extra wall space for hanging dress-up costumes, displaying artwork, or creating a felt or magnet board. Free-standing bookshelves make effective partitions, with catch-all baskets to scoop up everything from Legos to laundry. Extending desktops from the middle shelves on both sides of the bookshelf makes matching work areas for kids who share the space.

Parents want items tucked neatly away, kids want cool colorful stuff. Achieve both with shelves made from skateboards and other kid-friendly objects. a 40- to 60-watt bulb aimed at the work surface, plus softer ambient lighting. Managing kids’ digital lives should be part of the design plan too—for both learning and socializing. As social distancing keeps kids apart from friends, multi-player video games let them stay connected. Kids appreciate a gaming space with low comfy recliners, and dimmable lighting. Mounting old skateboards as shelving in the game area serves two purposes: they’re just the right width for controllers, headphones, and game boxes, and they’re a subtle reminder to head outside for some fresh air and exercise.

When kids learn at home full-time, their study area matters more than when they just did homework. Blending academics with home décor means even the walls can inspire curiosity and learning: try a chalkpaint wall for everything from spelling lists to Venn diagrams, or a world map mural for future globe-trotters. Choosing furniture to fit each child starts with considering individual needs. Is one child extra fidgety? Choose a wobble stool or a balance ball for their desk. Got a budding artist in the house? Set up an art table with easy-to-clean hard surfaces, and a pegboard to corral art supplies. How about the child who needs some alone time? An indoor teepee works well as a designated quiet spot, equipped with a weighted blanket and comfortable cushions. Size matters when it comes to chairs and desks: feet should reach the floor easily, and the table edge should meet their lower ribs. Look for chairs with adjustable height that can grow with the child—and consider adding a second one for mom or dad to pop in and help with lessons. Lighting matters too— desk time is easier on the eyes with proper task lighting from

T
hink of the best bathroom you’ve ever visited. You remember it now because it was so beautiful that it held your attention. Odds are it was in a luxury hotel, where designers took time to really think about making this bathroom not just a utilitarian room, but an experiential space. With the COVID-19 pandemic upon us, we’re spending more time in our homes, and many people are paying more attention to their bathrooms. They want to transform a functional space into a room that can be a sanctuary, an inspired place where people want to spend time to unwind and relax. You can create that kind of bathroom in your own home with attention to details, from choosing the right paint or wallpapers, to mixing it up with tiles, stones and slabs. Light fixtures and hardware can also spruce up a bathroom and transform a functional space into a room that has a day spa feel.
PAINT BOLDLY
When it comes to current paint trends, choose a color and go big. Maybe not just any color, but a shade of black or dark blue. Designers say the latest trend is dark-toned bathrooms, which make an instant impact. By using a dark tone with contrasting textures and adding pops of color, your bathroom will stand out. If black or dark blue is a bit too bold for you, consider monochrome black and white bathrooms, which look modern, minimalist and should be uncluttered. Also trending are full slabs of stone on walls and inside of showers in dark to grey white tones. The natural grain of these slabs of marble and granite provide unique, one of a kind visual features to a bathroom.

Modern wallpapers are not your grandmother’s little flowers and paisley prints. Today’s wallpaper can provide high contrast in a bathroom and create an illusion of expanded space or an artful expression. Modern papers are made
for high moisture bathrooms and easily withstand everyday use and wear and tear. Just remember, while bold is in and paint or wallpaper can radically transform the look of a bathroom, a bath should still exude a serene, tranquil atmosphere.

BASINS AND BATHTUBS No longer are basins and bathtubs simply white molded ceramic or plastic. These fixtures come in all shapes, colors and sizes, and can be made of stone, glass, precious metals or even wood, when it comes to a Japanese soaking tub. A striking basin or tub can transform a bathroom space. Think of it as a utilitarian piece of art. A free-standing tub provides a focal point for the bathroom and should almost immediately usher in an aura of calmness. Walking into a bathroom with a dazzling shiny brass or copper bathtub makes a bold statement. But if a metal bathtub
fall 2020

isn’t in your budget, try using simple brass, copper, pewter and even gold tone hardware faucets and pulls as your accent pieces, which also look stunning in a dark toned bathroom. These small metal accessories impart a bit of luxury without breaking the bank. For years, trends have moved towards eliminating bathtubs in the bathroom to save on space, but bathtubs are making a strong comeback, as more people are taking the luxurious time to soak. Having a bathtub adds softness, curves and a layer of tranquility.
69
DESIGN TRENDS
FLOORING AND GLASS
Don’t forget what goes underfoot. Flooring can be bold and beautiful in the bathroom too. Consider tile in interesting designs, shapes or styles. Colored grout is all the rage, even in the metallic shades of tubs and fixtures. As for windows, who really wants clear glass in a bathroom? No one, which just provides an opportunity to get creative. Opaque, stained and etched glass are all popular options for the bathroom.
DON’T FORGET THE LIGHTS
An inspired bathroom will create a relaxing space, but it must be functional, and if you’re using dark tones, good lighting is essential. Depending on the look you’re going for, step into any lighting store and let your imagination run wild. Consider how beautiful a crystal chandelier would look in your bathroom or how a modern light fixture will feel like a sculptured art piece. Don’t let static conventional canned lighting rule the day; think out of the ordinary bathroom box and find lights that make you happy.
THE RETURN OF BATHROOM TELEVISIONS
It may seem counter-intuitive, but as people spend more time in their spa-like bathrooms, televisions in this intimate space are becoming more popular. However, be sure to get a bathroom-specific television, which can withstand high humidity and water. Many people opt to have televisions hidden inside builtin cabinets, but some prefer their flat screen bathroom televisions mounted discreetly on a corner wall, which allows you to swivel it in different directions. For the super-hightechnological wizards, consider hidden televisions embedded in bathroom mirrors, a la Las Vegas hotels. Don’t make your bathroom a design afterthought—make it a relaxing sanctuary with a touch of the bold.

FABULOUS FALL PLANT YOUR GARDEN AND LANDSCAPE FOR THE COLORS OF AUTUMN WRITTEN BY BEND HOME + DESIGN STAFF

GREEN THUMB
T
he dramatic and vibrant colors of trees, shrubs and flowers brighten our neighborhoods and cities in the fall season. Even in the high desert, where leafy green hardwoods are not found in the abundance they are in other parts of the country, we still get our show. For a brief window in September and October, oranges, reds and yellows are all around us. Fall is also the best time to plant trees and shrubs, ensuring years of color to come. Read tips here on the best plants and trees to choose, how to maintain your fall color as long as possible and planting like a pro.
Coreopsis
PERENNIALS, ANNUALS AND GRASSES
A smattering of grasses and flowering plants add variety and beauty to a yard. For fall color, plan to add a few perennial fall-blooming asters, mums, coreopsis and tall stately Garden Phlox. Annual plants and flowers such as purple Homestead Verbena, combined with the dramatic foliage of flowering cabbage and kale, will brighten every yard. Plant a few reliable violas and pansies in the garden as well as patio containers and hanging baskets, for added frost resistance. Don’t forget to deadhead the spent blooms of your annuals and perennials. This necessary task will ensure re-blooming right up to the last days of fall.
Burning Bush
SHRUBS AND TREES
How do you know which trees will offer the best fall color? Try the reliable Red Sunset Maple, the amusingly-named Nannyberry tree, or the legendary king of reds, the Pin or Northern Red Oaks. When it comes to ornamental shrubs, the reliable Burning Bush will always be at the top of the list. Another great choice is the Chokeberry with its multicolor yellows, oranges and reds. This shrub offers wonderful white flowers plus berries to make the wildlife happy. The Serviceberry is a fantastic choice for our arid climate, with a variety of alluring smoky hues. The Amur or Flame Maple reveal the colors of the changing season.

MAKE THE COLOR LAST
As the season starts to wind down with shorter days and cooler temperatures, reduce your watering schedule and eliminate the application of synthetic chemical fertilizers. Attention to these two details allow for plants to better acknowledge the change in seasons, thus preparing them for their show of autumn colors.
PLANTING TIPS
If you act fast, you can get a few new trees and shrubs in the ground this season, in preparation for next fall’s vibrant show. Fall planting follows the heat of summer, when the weather cools but the soil is still warm enough to nurture the roots. Plant trees before winter hits and the ground freezes. When planting, use liberal amounts of organic compost to yield a better acidity to the soil. A soil rich in acidic humus will influence vibrant fall colors. In contrast, alkaline soils can not only alter flower colors, but can rob you of the desired vibrant reds, oranges and yellows. A little planning and your yard will look fantastic every season of the year.

A Muffin a Day... BAKE YOUR OWN CROWD PLEASERS THIS CHILLY SEASON
P
icture a chilly fall morning, the sun not yet above the horizon. The household is quiet, but the early riser knows the rest of the residents will be up soon, hungry and craving a treat. Dig into an early morning muffin baking session and make the whole household happy. Here we feature three triedand-true muffin selections for the fall season.

Cranberry
Tart and sweet, colorful and tasty, cranberry is a standout choice for a fall muffin. Nearly 3,000 acres of cranberries are grown in Oregon, producing 40 million pounds of the berries each year. Most are grown on the Southern Oregon coast, where the temperate climate along the coast affords a long growing season, giving the berries a darker pigmentation than berries grown in other states. Oregon cranberries are harvested from mid-October to mid-December. Order some online from Cape Blanco Cranberries, fresh or frozen, and bake to your heart’s content.
Apple
Oregon grows more than twenty varieties of apples, producing a whopping 110 million pounds a year of the famous fresh fall fruit. Most are grown in the region around Portland, most notably the Hood River area. Make a trip north this fall and drive the Hood River Fruit Loop, featuring dozens of orchards and farmstands to shop from. Try Kiyokawa Family Orchards or Packer Orchard. Common apple varieties grown in Oregon include Jonagold, Granny Smith and Braeburn, but the Honeycrisp and Ginger Gold are great choices for baking. One of many advantages to the apple muffin is its moist texture. Dice the apples small for best results. Dig in—you’re getting your fruit for the day, too!

Pumpkin
Making pumpkin muffins from scratch might sound impossibly difficult, but it isn’t really. Buy a pie pumpkin from your local grocer, pumpkin patch or a harvest market. Slice it open and remove the seeds. Bake it upside down in a baking dish filled with an inch of water. Scoop out the baked pumpkin and puree. Treat it just like the canned stuff, and follow your favorite recipe. Voila! You can freeze the leftover pumpkin puree for a year, and make tasty fall pumpkin muffins all year long.

ARTS + EXHIBITS Tired of looking at the same artwork on your walls? Overdue for an art fix? Then you’ll be happy to know that Central Oregon’s galleries and exhibit spaces are welcoming visitors again and rolling out new shows for the fall. If you’re still unsure about stepping inside galleries, go online as many have expanded their websites to complement the in-gallery experience.
SCALEHOUSE GALLERY At Liberty, an arts collaborative formed three years ago and housed in the historic Liberty Theater in downtown Bend, has gifted its assets to Scalehouse, a nonprofit which produces year-round arts programming, including the Bend Design conference. At Liberty built a reputation for edgy contemporary exhibits. Its co-founders will join the Scalehouse leadership team and will continue to manage the daily curatorial and business operations of Scalehouse Gallery, according to At Liberty co-founder Rene Mitchell. Scalehouse will be moving from the theater space and is looking for a new home. Until one is found, Scalehouse Gallery will offer pop-up showings.
November & December Shabazz Larkin, a Nashville-based multidisciplinary artist and activist, creates images of Black culture and contemporary spirituality. Mitchell says the exhibition will offer images representing incarcerated Black men. Go to scalehouse.org/scalehouse-gallery for a location still to be determined.

MOCKINGBIRD GALLERY The grande dame of Bend’s gallery scene, Mockingbird Gallery, celebrated its thirtieth year in July. The gallery represents forty-eight artists from across the United States with ten themed shows a year. “We’re the museum of town, and we’re happy to provide comfort and joy,” said Jim Peterson, who co-owns the gallery with his wife Nathalie. (The couple also owns Peterson Contemporary Art, formerly Peterson/Roth Gallery.)
October “Animal Impressions” is a one-man show of bronze sculptures by Mick Doellinger opening Friday, October 2. Born in Australia but now residing in Texas, Doellinger takes inspiration from his experience in rodeo, taxidermy, guiding and wildlife management. “When someone looks at my sculptures, I hope they feel the essence of the animal,” he wrote.
December
“A Song for the Season” features paintings by Jack Braman and Shanna Kunz, opening Friday, December 4. Braman’s landscapes convey a sense of serenity, light and places largely undisturbed by human development, save for the occasional country road, covered bridge or barn. He sketches, photographs and absorbs the mood and lighting in the outdoors, and then returns to his studio in Grays River, Washington, to paint the beauty and calmness of the landscapes. Utah artist Kunz paints contemporary landscapes depicting rural life in the West, often through the seasons—a slushy road leading to a farm, golden fall foliage erupting beneath a ridge, an overgrown grasschoked road seemingly going nowhere. “I push color and value into new compositions and continue a lifelong effort to communicate the emotional connection I feel with my environment,” she wrote.

TUMALO ART CO.
November
Tumalo Art Co., an artist-owned cooperative in the Old Mill District, has seen robust sales this summer after being closed for two months during Oregon’s spring lockdown, according to founder and artist Susan Luckey Higdon. She attributes the uptick in sales to an email, “Weekly Art Fix,” which offers photos of art for purchase from an online shopping cart, an updated website for viewing current work and people having more time to enrich their homes with art.
Adell Shetterly’s exhibit, “Impressions,” will feature colorful, abstract hand-pulled monoprints and monotypes (printmaking that results in a single print, not multiples) and collagraphs—a textured, incised or raised print created through a variety of media. “Where in the World” is a group show based on images of places from around the world designed to assuage people’s longing for travel in the pandemic. In the spirit of the holidays, the gallery will continue its annual tradition of offering tiny, original paintings that can be hung on trees like ornaments.
David Kinker, a wild-water rafter, kayaker and guide, presents “Hydro Logic.” His passage along wild and scenic rivers inspires his paintings, which will be framed with his custom-made moldings.

COLORFUL NEW MURAL ADORNS BUSY BEND INTERSECTION
PHOTO BOT TOM RICHARD BACON

Owned locally, the motel commissioned Gretchen Leggitt of Bellevue, Washington, to paint images of popular locations and activities—the Tower Theatre, hops, mountains and rivers, sunshine and a starry night.
