GLAMPING

Elk Lake Resort Like the idea of camping better than the reality of camping? Try glamping. At Elk Lake Resort, a reservation for a glamping tent comes with the tent itself, fully equipped with a dining table, lantern, access to free showers, all linens and bedding, and a cozy futon. Enjoy all of the amenities of an overnighter in the woods under the stars on scenic Elk Lake, without lifting a finger. BEER

Boneyard Beer Pub After years of selling pints and takeaway growlers from its flagship downtown location, Boneyard Beer last year opened a pub on North Division in Bend. Serving Asian-Latin-American fusion foods alongside award-winning beer in a renovated Chinese restaurant, Boneyard quickly became another mainstay in the Central Oregon craft brew and fresh food scene. Indoor and outdoor seating and two bars please crowds.

BIKING

Crooked River Scenic Canyon Bikeway This ride begins at Rimrock Park in Prineville and leaves town into an agricultural river valley with a sky that stretches wide overhead. The ride starts flat and easy, with the river meandering to your right, etching lazy “S curves through the fertile fields. Stop by Good Bike Co. for tips before you head out, or grab a beer there after your ride.

ADVENTURE

Mt. Bachelor Zipline Opening spring of 2020 is Mt. Bachelor's latest amenity, a 3,443-foot zipline with an 866-foot vertical plunge. The adventure begins at the West Village base area, the resort's summer hub. A 12-minute chair lift ride leads to the beginning of a three-stage zip tour with a patented trolley system allowing riders to customize their descent. FILM

Each October for nearly two decades, Bend has become a hub for independent film. The BendFilm Festival brings shorts, documentaries, feature films, filmmaker Q&As, and panel discussions to regional theaters and venues for the four-day festival. Filmmakers visit Bend from all over the world to talk about their work with festival-goers. It's an exciting weekend celebrating culture and the independent arts.

In late June and early July, the parade, rodeo and Parimutuel horse races come to town. Rodeo queens, live music, a street party, a cattle drive and good food and good times are all on hand at this classic annual event. visitcentraloregon.com

It all started with a few settlers. “Farewell Bend” was the last hospitable spot pioneers saw on their wagon train journey west before they traversed the Cascade Range. A few saw the location’s charm and stayed, and a century and a half later, Bend is in the national spotlight as a hub of recreation and scenic beauty. Outdoor adventure is a primary draw. Annual sporting races range from triathlons and multisport to skiing, running and mountain biking. There’s plenty of outdoor adventure for mere mortals to tackle, too, including a popular summertime float down the Deschutes River through the middle of town, hiking on 65 miles of urban trails including the Deschutes River Trail, and playing at eighty-two parks and open spaces in town. When the play stops, it’s time to eat, drink and be merry. A vibrant cultural arena is alive with art galleries, art walks, a full schedule of outdoor concerts and a theater scene. Craft beer is king here, and local wine, cider, distilled spirits and beer are all covered. From white linen to food trucks, great eats abound.

LOWER DESCHUTES RIVER

Lower Deschutes River

The Lower Deschutes River is an outdoor adventure land steeped in American Indian heritage, surrounded by steep canyons and flowing rivers. MADRAS - CULVER The Lower Deschutes is a major hub for the fishing, boating and hiking inclined. Anglers can wade into the flowing waters of the Deschutes, Metolius and Crooked rivers. Set up camp at Lake Simtustus at Pelton Dam or a state park near Lake Billy Chinook, or spend a weekend on a houseboat. Take a scenic hike on the Crooked River National Grassland, where The Peninsula and The Island are standout landmarks.

MAUPIN Redsides and rafting are the mainstays of Maupin. Redsides are the brilliantly colored, hard-fighting native Deschutes River trout that anglers obsess over. Add to that whitewater thrills, and it’s easy to see why Maupin has grown, with more lodging and dining amenities to please outdoor enthusiasts. Plus, a warm and dry climate and small town charm makes Maupin easy to love.

WARM SPRINGS The heart and soul of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Warm Springs is the site of Indian Head Casino. Nearby is the Museum at Warm Springs, the first tribal museum in the state of Oregon. The stunning architectural structure interprets the cultural and historical journeys of the Warm Springs, Wasco and Pauite tribes. See Pacific Northwest Native American paintings, sculpture, masks, ceremonial clothing, ritual implements and beadwork.

SUMMER

It’s Summer and the Living is Easy

Pick your poison for outdoor adventure and a season of play. ON THE GREENS With thirty golf courses less than an hour’s drive apart, Central Oregon is a nationally recognized golf destination. Reserve a tee time and pack your irons. For more info see centraloregongolftrail.com. WATERY WONDERLAND Rivers and lakes are great places to play. Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway is home to twelve bodies of water to choose from. Each lake is a little bit different, reflecting views of snowcapped peaks and offering kayaking, canoeing and standup paddleboarding on the water. Elk Lake Resort delivers cabins, lakefront dining

and boat rentals. Maybe you are more of a river person? Fish, float or swim in the Deschutes, Metolius and Crooked rivers. ON TWO WHEELS Which is your cycling pick? Choose from 300 miles of singletrack, some mellow enough for beginners, some technical and adrenaline inducing. On the pavement, Central Oregon is home to five of the state’s fifteen scenic bikeways, bike-friendly routes highlighted by cultural and historical landmarks, gentle hills and remarkable scenery. Competitive? Come for the regional mountain biking, cyclocross and road races held here each year.

TRAIL TIME Whether you’re after an easy stroll with the kids or a dawnto-dusk mega-miler, there is a hiking trail for you. River walking, mountain climbing and lake loops are all here. ROD AND REEL The Deschutes is famous for its native redside rainbow trout and annual steelhead runs. The smaller Metolius River is known for being home to monster bull trout. Crane Prairie Reservoir, Davis Lake and East Lake are all noted for their trophy trout. More of the bodies of water in these parts that deliver good fishing opportunities include Cultus Lake, Wickiup Reservoir

Whether it’s a sunset beer at Crux, a reward beer on a mountain peak, a campfire cider, or a kombucha at a food cart, Central Oregon measures its liquid by the pint. The Bend Ale Trail is a good place to start exploring. p. 90

Hometown: Pocatello, Idaho Home Neighborhood: Bend Years in Central Oregon: 1 How do you show off Central Oregon to visitors? I'm the host of a TV series that showcases what Central Oregon has to offer, and I take people on workshops to incredible locations and into the air because there are few experiences like flying over the Cascade Range. Favorite day-off activity: Spending time with my wife and kids. The more we do, the more we find there is left to do! Where to unwind: Paddling out on one of the Cascade lakes, where Zen is in abundance. Where to eat and drink: My wife and I love El Sancho and Ariana. Where to get cultured: We love the High Desert Museum and the local music scene. Where to explore: I like to find a trail that few travel on. As a photographer, there's so much more to see on the path less traveled. Favorite winter activity: Breaking a new trail with the family in the snow under a full moon. The foothills of the Cascades are booming with singletrack trails. On any given summer morning, trailheads bustle with riders ranging from beginner to shredder. The lower-elevation trails cover all the bases: relatively flat, fast and fun, with some tough technical sections and punchy climbs. Higher up, ride in the shadows of snowcapped 10,000-foot peaks through high alpine meadows with breathtaking vistas. TOWN FAVORITE Phil’s Trail is the region’s most popular network, accessed by a trailhead just a couple of minutes from Bend off Skyliners Road. Riders can access a well-marked maze of diverse singletrack through Ponderosa pine forest with pockets of solitude. TERRIFIC TRAILS Peterson Ridge Trail System is a local favorite, accessible from downtown Sisters. Smith Rock State Park offers some of the most scenic trails in Central Oregon. The Maston area near Redmond is a winter riding option just off Cline Falls Highway. The Round Mountain/Lookout Mountain loop near Prineville offers 35 miles of riding and nearly 6,000 feet of climbing. Gravel riding near Prineville has taken off in popularity, with rentals at Good Bike Co. and trails through the Ochoco Mountains.

THRILL CHASERS Mt. Bachelor’s Bike Park delivers downhill excitement in summer and fall. Take a dip in Paulina or East Lake to cool off after your big day of mountain bike riding. HIRE A GUIDE Let the folks at Giddy Up Bike Adventures guide you on mountain and bike-packing trips around the region. Based in Redmond, Giddy Up leads gravel and road rides too. The pros at Cog Wild Mountain Bike Tours and Shuttles in Bend take you up the Cascade Lakes Highway to trails such as “Tiddlywinks” and “Funner.” Shuttle to Dutchman Flat, near Mount Bachelor, make a short, slow climb, and then cruise downhill for about twenty miles on singletrack trail back to Bend. Renowned course designers have made their mark in Central Oregon, including Jack Nicklaus, who designed the Pronghorn course that bears his name, and David McLay Kidd, the mastermind behind Tetherow’s course. Course features such as the tight, treelined fairways of Widgi Creek, the railcar bridge to the island green 16th hole at Lost Tracks and the red-cinder bunkers at Aspen Lakes will add photo-ops to your game.

46

Take in beautiful canyon vistas at Crooked River Ranch or bask in the sun between massive mountains and a cityscape at River’s Edge, located in the heart of Bend. Several courses are open year-round, including Meadow Lakes in Prineville and Redmond’s Juniper Golf Course. The latter has hosted the Oregon Open numerous times. Each golf course has its own story, and there’s a home for every level of player.

Golf Digest’s Picks Three local resort courses made NO. 6 The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at Pronghorn cuts through lava rock outcroppings over which snow-capped peaks loom in the distance. The course plays fast and firm and features some of the finest putting surfaces in all of Oregon. Pronghorn Resort is a true luxury golf experience in Central Oregon, with a Tuscan-style clubhouse, tasty (and tasteful) restaurants and vacation rentals. Stay at the 105-room, luxury accommodation, Huntington Lodge.

NO. 9 Crosswater Club is Sunriver Resort’s signature course and has been beloved since it opened more than twenty years ago. The heathland-style layout is inviting off the tee, but a beast from the fairway where approach shots have to find challenging, narrow greens. Sunriver Resort is home to sixty-three holes of golf including Meadows Course, the site of several NCAA championship events.

NO. 11 Tetherow is a David McLay Kidd masterpiece in the middle of Bend—yet it looks like it was transported straight from seaside Scotland. The true links-style course features plenty of fescue, knobs and knolls and is truly known as a local favorite, located between the town and the national forest. Recently added features at this adventure basecamp include lodges, an event center, spa and pool.

Surf the earth with the fastest form of golf course transportation, created right here in Central Oregon. Take a surfboard-shaped platform, add a lithium-ion battery pack, four turf tires and a power control system, and you have what many in the golf industry say is one of the best new products on the golf course. The GolfBoard is part golf cart, part skateboard and part surfboard. The product is a fun, safe, easy-to-use golf innovation powerful enough to carry a golfer and gear for 18 holes, yet more turf-friendly than the typical electric or gas-powered golf cart. The GolfBoard is also faster, increasing time of play. And GolfBoard was founded right here in Central Oregon. The Bend-based business brings local as well as national credibility, with surfing legend Laird Hamilton a co-founder of the company. As for the ride, anyone who has ever snowboarded, skateboarded or

A Chance of Snow

Around here, plenty of fresh powder fuels your winter adventures.

v i s i t c e n t r a l o r e g o n . c o m

FORGET HIBERNATING. When the days turn cool and the snow flies, it's time to head outside to play. Winter offers a whole new world to explore, from skiing and snowmobiling to snowshoeing and ice-skating. Catch fresh tracks on the mountain at Mt. Bachelor in the morning and end the day with fireside après ski sips and bites at breweries and restaurants in town. There’s plenty to do indoors as well, from perusing the works of artisans and artists to discovering live music and performances.

WINTER

Sunny Skies, Snowy Slopes

From the ice rinks to the ski lifts to the aprés ski relaxing, our winter playground is legendary. Mt. Bachelor

SNOWSHOEING Snowshoeing gets you outside in winter without the gear or skill required by some other sports. Try marked snowshoe routes with warming huts and solace at Virginia Meissner and Swampy Lakes sno-parks, off Century Drive outside of Bend. Join a U.S. Forest Service naturalist at Mt. Bachelor on a free tour to learn about winter ecology and the area’s wildlife and plants, including the pine marten that Mt. Bachelor named a lift for. Elk Lake Resort rents snowshoes to winter visitors, too.

SLEDDING Take the whole family to Wanoga Sno-Park, located off Century Drive on the route to Mt. Bachelor, for a day of sledding fun. There’s ample parking and plenty of room to sled, toboggan or inner tube. Bring hot chocolate or buy it from the snack trailer in the parking lot. Head to the Mt. Bachelor Snowblast Tubing Park and snag a daypass for an afternoon of zooming down the mountain on inner tubes, or visit SHARC’s snowtubing hill in Sunriver for a day of fun for the whole family. Hoodoo's Autobahn Tubing Park is good times on the snow west of Sisters.

SNOWMOBILING Hundreds of miles of groomed and well-marked trails get you into the backcountry. If you don’t have a snowmobile, rent one through Central Oregon Adventures. Take off from Wanoga Sno-Park, Edison Butte on the road between Mt. Bachelor and Sunriver, Newberry National Volcanic Monument in La Pine or the Ray Benson Sno-Park west of Sisters. Try the local's favorite trip from Dutchman Flat out to Elk Lake.

DOG SLEDDING In addition to downhill sports, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, Mt. Bachelor offers regularly scheduled dogsled tours led by qualified guides. Oregon Trail of Dreams, owned by an Iditarod-competing family, takes guests on a oncein-a-lifetime adventure into parts of the forest many people never see. Meet some of Oregon Trail of Dreams' 100 Alaskan Husky dogs, and feel their power as they pull you along.

FAT TIRE BIKING Snow on the trails doesn’t mean the end of our cycling season. Enjoy the winter wonderland on two wheels via a fat tire bike—a mountain bike with extra-wide tires perfect for churning through snow. Cog Wild offers three-hour fat bike tours led by experienced riders, and WebCyclery in downtown Bend rents fat bikes yearround. In the mountains, visit Elk Lake Resort for a rental.

WINTER

ICE SKATING Four rinks in Central Oregon put your day on ice. In addition to the rinks at The Village at Sunriver and Seventh Mountain Resort near Bend, visit the NHL-sized recreation hub The Pavilion in Bend. In Redmond, visit the 4,000-square-foot downtown ice skating rink. BACKCOUNTRY SKIING Superb backcountry skiing opportunities await just minutes north and northwest of the Mt. Bachelor ski area. A slightly longer haul is required to get into some

virginal backcountry runs in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, the Three Sisters volcanic peaks and Pine Mountain (east of Bend). For a guided experience, book with Oregon Ski Guides. CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING Like your trails groomed for cross-country skiing? Head to Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center for a ticket or Virginia Meissner Sno-Park for volunteergroomed trails. Ungroomed skiing is available at fourteen sno-parks in the region, or blaze your own path in the Deschutes National Forest.

Mt. Bachelor

Powder perfection on top of the world. Mt. Bachelor’s reputation for deep powder, a long season and incredible vistas is well deserved. The mountain had 83 snowfall days with a total snowfall of 349 inches during the 2018-2019 season, with an average base depth of 133 inches. The 360-degree, lift-served mountain provides views for miles north over the Three Sisters Wilderness, west over the High Cascade Lakes, south toward Crater Lake and east over the high desert. During the cross-country ski boom in the 1970s, the folks at Mt. Bachelor were early adopters, adding a groomed trail system. One of America’s first ski areas to welcome snowboarders, embrace telemark skiing and install high-speed lifts, the people at

Mt. Bachelor have always been forward thinking. Today, the 4,318-acre resort is the 6th-largest ski area in North America. The newest lift, Cloudchaser, is a 1,448 vertical foot high-speed quad on the east side of the mountain. Get your adrenaline pumping with big air and tricks at the terrain parks or the lift-served Snowblast Tubing Park. Or take it a little easier at the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center, with 56 kilometers of groomed trails for both skate skiing and classic skiing. Several lodges around the mountain offer food and beverages to refuel before you head back out into a winter playground. This is the stuff winter dreams are made of.

Throughout Central Oregon, the community has an eye on accessibility. In downtown Bend, sidewalks, transition points and important passageways have

been improved to remove barriers. Bend Park & Recreation District supports inclusiveness in the city’s dozens of beautiful parks and hundreds of active programs. The same is true in other communities around the region. Come one, come all— it’s time to play.

Oregon Adaptive Sports Founded in Central Oregon in 2003, Oregon Adaptive Sports works to provide life-changing outdoor recreation experiences to individuals with disabilities. OAS envisions a day when everyone can benefit from this region’s amazing plethora of adventure opportunities. In summer and winter alike, OAS welcomes participants, regardless of where they live, to join a program in Central Oregon. Winter programs include skiing, snowboarding or crosscountry skiing at Mt. Bachelor. Take to the slopes with an instructor and experience the beauty of the Cascade Range from the top of the mountain.

MUSEUMS The Deschutes Historical Museum sits in Bend’s historic high school, the Reed School building. Rotating exhibits filled with historic photographs and personal records offer a glimpse of the high desert’s past. Part wildlife sanctuary, part historic site, the High Desert Museum is a nationally acclaimed living art museum frequently called “The Smithsonian of the West.” Surprises at every exhibit reveal the history, culture and nature of the region. Spend a day getting lost in native habitat. The Museum at Warm Springs, north of Madras, has been a cultural anchor for twenty-five years. Discover the largest and most complete artifact collections of original art from American Indians in the West, both past and present.

FILM Venues and organizations such as McMenamins Old St. Francis School, the Tower Theatre and Tin Pan Theater owned by BendFilm showcase independent films and second-run films throughout the year. A multiscreen Regal Cinemas complex in Bend’s Old Mill, Redmond Cinema, Pine Theater in Prineville and the Sisters Movie House play first-run films. The Central Oregon Film Office encourages the region as a filmshooting location. THEATER Local playhouses and theater companies abound for such a small region. Cascades Theatre and Tower Theatre are near downtown Bend and stage productions year-round, showcasing the region’s talent. The Tower Theatre regularly

hosts national acts, including comedians, authors, and theater and dance troupes. Local theater and entertainment hits this historic venue’s stage, too, as well as seasonal revues. ART FAIRS Artists from around North America display their work in the Old Mill District by the Deschutes River during a three-day outdoor festival, Art in the High Desert. Sunriver Art Fair was named “Best Small Town Art Fair” by Art Fair Calendar in 2016; proceeds support local nonprofits. Saturday Markets and Farmers Markets also often feature artisans and artists with their works, throughout the region. ART WALKS Once a month, local galleries and businesses stay open late

There are so many opportunities across the region from outdoor experiences to shopping. Here in Warm Springs we have fishing, camping, the casino and the museum for people to come and experience. Favorite day-off activity: I like to take my kids into the forest and teach them about the importance of the trees and the wildlife. Where to unwind: In the woods of the Cascade Range or along the Deschutes River. Where to eat and drink: I love the food carts throughout Bend and Redmond and prefer them over restaurants. McMenamins is also a fun place to go and spend some time. Where to get cultured: The Museum at Warm Springs is a great place to see real native traditional items and learn about the true history of the people of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. Also visit Pi-Ume-Sha Treaty Days Pow-Wow at the end of June, open to anyone who would like to attend. Where to explore: Non-tribal members can fish the Deschutes River with a fishing Pow Wow Celebration at Warm Springs

permit, or hire a guide to take you down the river. Favorite winter activity: Stay home

to celebrate the regional talent of artists and artisans. Join the art walkers in downtown Bend on the first Friday and downtown Sisters on the fourth Friday of every month for these vibrant community celebrations. ROUNDABOUT ART Bend is known for art in public places. See sculptures from local artists in twenty-three local roundabouts, or take a guided tour with Bend Tour Company. Redmond has its own collection of public art on display. Keep your eyes open as you travel around town to see art installations at various locations from the city's entrance to the transit hub. v i s i t c e n t r a l o r e g o n . c o m

MUSIC FESTIVALS Regional musicians play free concerts throughout the summer for the community at Munch & Music in downtown’s Drake Park and at the Backyard Summer Concert Series at Sunriver Resort. Classical music fans will enjoy the Sunriver Music Festival at Sunriver Resort. September’s Sisters Folk Festival is a three-day event drawing the best of both local and national American folk acts to the small town. Jazz fans will be pleasantly surprised to hear about Jazz at the Oxford.

Pronghorn Luxury in the Desert Pronghorn is Central Oregon’s luxury lodging in the sagebrush plains east of Bend. It’s always a little bit warmer out this way, which means a vacation with luxury amenities, access to the best of Central Oregon and year-round temperatures always a bit warmer than in Bend proper. Situated south of Redmond, between Bend and bucolic Powell Butte, Pronghorn is less than thirty minutes from the airport,

yet close enough to Bend to catch all the action. World-class golf is playable nearly any month of the year. During summer, cool off after a round with poolside service. The luxury resort embraces the surrounding desert with outdoor living spaces, expansive views across lush fairways and ancient juniper groves. Walking paths provide easy access to excellent onsite dining options.

HUNTINGTON LODGE Huntington Lodge Resort Residences is at the heart of the Pronghorn community. The architectural design combines rustic elegance with details inspired by the natural surroundings. One side of the three-story lodge overlooks the Tom Fazio Championship Course, with full decks and sweeping views of Mt. Bachelor and the Three Sisters.

Tetherow Basecamp for Adventure Tetherow Resort’s 50 luxury rooms, fine dining and one of America’s Top 100 golf courses are located across the street from world-class mountain biking trails, fifteen minutes from Mt. Bachelor and minutes from downtown Bend. Guests enjoy discounted greens fees, free gear storage, shuttle service, the option to borrow a locally made guitar and more perks. The resort community is known for its stellar

location and views, but the rooms at the lodges are a sight in their own right. Choose a sunrise or sunset view from your private balcony. Cozy up to a gas fireplace. Leave your gear in the mini mudroom entryway. If you are traveling in a group, try one of the vacation rental homes on the property with five bedrooms and five baths. Stroll down to the new pool or hot tub and order a drink from your cabana.

DINING Find Northwest cuisine in a fine-dining atmosphere at Solomon’s, where the Pacific Northwest-centric menu is bursting with flavor. Each dish is familiar, with a twist. The result is upscale originality. For casual bites, The Row is a creative pub with a Scottish bent—in honor of the resort’s links-style golf course, which is in clear view through floor-to-ceiling windows.

WEST OF THE CASCADES, local bounty prevails thanks to farmers and ranchers who know how to harness the potential of our sun and soil. A local commitment to fresh, regionally sourced ingredients abounds, drawing acclaimed and creative chefs who apply their talents to the region’s pubs, bars, breweries, cideries and restaurants. Whether you seek white tablecloth, al fresco, rustic, modern or any fusion of these elements, the locale and cuisine won’t disappoint.

a satisfying steak dinner at Carson’s American Kitchen at Sunriver Resort. The Blacksmith and Bos Taurus offer classic, meaty fare in downtown Bend. SWING AND SIP Golf clubs with exceptional fine-dining menus include Tetherow, Broken Top Club and Pronghorn. Each resort has a more casual option, as well. Try Backyard at Sunriver Resort, outdoors and overlooking the Meadows Golf Course. At Tetherow, The Row is the 19th

HIP AND TASTY At the Oxford Hotel, take the elevator to the subterranean level to find urban-chic decor at 10 Below. Riff Cold Brewed Coffee House is Bend's newest destination for caffeine, located in the trending Box Factory retail center. The River Pig offers upscale bites and sips in a huge space, with outdoor dining, too.

CLASSIC NEVER FAILS In Bend, American classics are the specialty of the venerable Pine Tavern and 900 Wall in the heart of downtown Bend. Down the street, go for inspired comfort food at Drake. If it’s seafood you’re after, Anthony’s in the Old Mill District offers “surf ’n’ turf ” with freshly caught fish flown in daily. Broken Top Club provides classic dishes in a timelessly upscale space with a view of the Cascades.

I love to start with a tour around the Old Mill District and of the Deschutes River Trail. Favorite day-off activity: Brunching! There's so many weekend specials to choose from around town. The region’s craft breweries, cideries and artisan distilleries create tasty, sip-worthy beverages all year. With more than thirty craft breweries, Central Oregon is officially a beer lover’s destination. The booming brewing trend also inspired a vanguard of craft distillers creating small-batch bourbon, gin and more spirits, plus cideries fermenting Northwest fruit. With all these options, the only real question is where to start and when to stop. Here’s a guide to the musts. CRAFT BEER The area’s breweries exemplify Northweststyle food and beer. Pubs are great options for families and large groups. Go to Bend Brewing Co., with an amazing outdoor space that extends down to Mirror Pond. Visit the original pub of the famed Deschutes Brewery or go on a tour of the brewing facility. More eat-and-drink options include

106

Crux Fermentation Project, Boneyard Brew Pub, Immersion Brewing, 10 Barrel Brewing Company, Cascade Lakes Brewing Co. Lodge, Silver Moon Brewing and Worthy Brewing (all in Bend). Tasting room-only options can be found at Spider City and Bevel Craft Brewing. Find a huge selection of beers on tap and bottled beers from around the world at Bend’s Broken Top Bottle Shop, also a favorite for vegetarian fare on Bend’s west side. Redmond is home to both Wild Ride Brewing and Cascade Lakes Brewing Co.’s 7th Street Brew House. In Sisters, head to Three Creeks Brewing Co, with both a flagship and small tasting room location. Sunriver Brewery, with pubs in Bend and Sunriver, serves award-winning brews and tasty plates. Prineville offers Ochoco Brewing and the famed Steins Pillar burger.

WINE, CIDER & SPIRITS North of Redmond, Maragas Winery makes an award-winning muskat and offers tastings, tours and events to the tune of live music. Views of Smith Rock and the Cascades can be seen from both Maragas Winery’s and Faith, Hope and Charity Vineyards’ tasting rooms. At the base of Smith Rock, Ranch at the Canyons’ vineyard is set in a rural Tuscan-style estate with breathtaking views of the Cascades, desert canyons and rolling farmlands. Sisters-based Cascade Street Distillery has frame-worthy label art and sip-worthy spirits. In Tumalo, visit Bendistillery’s tasting room, adjacent to the farm where some of its ingredients are grown. Oregon Spirit Distillers in Bend crafts a bourbon to rival any Kentucky sour mash. Avid Cider pours its beverages in the Box Factory in Bend. In July, get tickets for Cork and Barrel Sip Wine Event, benefitting the KIDS Center. visitcentraloregon.com

Central Oregon also has some of the lowest power, water and telecommunications costs in the country. 5. Move Your Business, Change Your Life. We enjoy a lifestyle with big-city amenities while keeping the small-town

feel. Though best known for outdoor recreation, our region also hosts some of the Northwest’s best events, festivals, concerts and conferences. 5 ½. Support. Legend Cider

Business Relocation Profiles Kollective CEO Dan Vetras knew that rising Bay Area costs and competition for talent were holding back the company’s growth and profitability. He needed a location with lower operating and living costs, but that could still attract the best software minds. Because Kollective’s clients are global, he also needed excellent air service. A visit to Bend led to an introduction to Central Oregon’s tech ecosystem. Two years later, Kollective relocated. Not only has Vetras found and retained outstanding people, the company has doubled its

employment and moved into a custombuilt location just minutes from the region’s best mountain biking trails. Central Oregon is home to dozens of breweries, distilleries and cideries, with a reputation for creating some of the best brews in the United States. When all-natural, craft cider company Legend Cider went looking for a new facility, it took interest in the buzz and looked toward the southern end of the region to the city of La Pine. Founder and CEO Adrianne Baumann was in need of an affordable

location that could keep up with the demand of a growing business. EDCO stepped in to connect Legend Cider with potential landlords and business locations while helping it secure a forgivable loan for facility renovation costs. EDCO’s help in the relocation process gave Legend Cider the opportunity to focus on what it does best — creating delicious ciders. Outdoor gear and apparel has been one of the fastest-growing industries in Central Oregon. This gathering of 100+ companies caught the attention of German climbing gear and apparel leader, Edelrid, which established an office in Redmond. Meanwhile, a collaborative group of outdoor product leaders formed the Oregon Outdoor Alliance. OOA connected Edelrid with contacts and guided it through business solutions. These factors convinced Edelrid to make Redmond their North American headquarters and distribution center — a decision that has enabled it to make significant strides in the U.S. market.

LIVING

Living in Central Oregon There’s no arguing with Central Oregon’s status as one of America’s best places to live, play and work. National Geographic, USA Today, The New York Times and Outside are just a few that have praised the mountain culture and yearround recreational pursuits. Forbes named Bend the “Best Small City for Business and Careers” in 2016. The Atlantic singled out the outstanding qualities of Central Oregon Community College and the Deschutes County library system. The Cascades branch campus of Oregon State

Oregon State University Cascades

University in Bend welcomed its largest incoming class to date last year, and offers four-year degrees to complement the region’s imaginative and dedicated entrepreneurial spirit and skilled, well-educated workforce. Our medical system rivals what is found in big cities, because the best healthcare workers in the field want to live here. Access to the rest of the country is available through the Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM), which thrives as a result of committed economic support from the region’s municipalities.
