Central Oregon’s culinary landscape continues to flourish, boasting an impressive range of new dining options that are elevating and diversifying the local food scene. While long-beloved Central Oregon staples have held strong amidst a barrage of recent obstacles, new eateries have brought vibrant, fresh flavors to the community. In the past year, several new restaurants have broadened the cuisines and cultures found in Central Oregon. Interested in trying traditional Korean or Himalayan fare? Craving fresh, homemade pasta and international wines? Want a high-quality culinary experience that directly supports local farms? These new arrivals to the restaurant scene deliver, going above and beyond in food quality as well as atmosphere.
Yoli, the first contemporary Korean restaurant in Bend, has garnered rave reviews since opening its doors in June 2022. Owners Joe and Laura Kim are no strangers to the local culinary scene. Before embarking on this new venture, both served long tenures at the renowned 5 Fusion, Joe as the head chef and Laura as the front-ofhouse manager. That wealth of experience and knowledge is evident when sitting down for a meal at Yoli.
Inspired by Joe’s Korean heritage and a desire to bring something novel to the local dining scene, the menu at Yoli incorporates traditional Korean flavors into approachable and delicious dishes. “Yoli is introducing people to a cuisine that they may not have had before, ingredients they may not have ever tried and a style that they may not have experienced,” said Joe. This way of thinking led to Yoli’s set lunch menu that offers a chance to sample a wide variety of Korean flavors and dishes at once.
The entire menu is ingredient-driven, with the couple frequently traveling to San Francisco and Portland markets to source hard-to-find products and a wider variety of in-season produce. For dinner, Chef Kim recommends the kalbi steak, a succulent dish of boneless marinated short ribs served with various seasonal accompaniments, or the grilled pork belly Ssam, their signature build-your-own lettuce wrap. “We want to give consistently great service and make everyone feel welcome and comfortable, even when they have never had this cuisine before,” said Joe.
Walking into Feast Food Company in Redmond feels like walking into a friend’s home for dinner, not only because of its location in a charming house, but because owners Emma and Chris Leyden are faithful stewards of the community. In everything they do, In everything they do, from hanging local art on the walls of their cozy dining room to forging relationships with regional farmers and ranchers, the owners of the Feast Food Company are rooted in supporting the greater community.
Emma and Chris met working in kitchens and developed a shared dream of opening their own restaurant. When the Feast Food Company began as a Redmond food truck in February 2021, the couple expected to be mobile for at least three or four years. But only two years later, the enthusiastic
community support allowed them to move into a brick-and-mortar space.
The menu is locally sourced and driven by ingredients that change with the seasons and are inspired by the harvests of regional farmers. Expect fresh and creative menu additions every few weeks, showcasing the best of Central Oregon. While the menu is constantly evolving, a few beloved staples remain year-round, such as the fried mushrooms dressed in an Alabama white sauce and the classic juicy cheeseburger with meat from local ranches. Whether enjoying a seasonal special or a classic signature dish, savoring a delicious meal at Feast Food Company makes a positive impact on the community. “By people coming to support us, they are directly supporting the farms and the local ranchers. All of that is the bigger goal for us,” said Emma.
One of Bend’s newer Italian eateries from the renowned team at Sixtop Restaurant Group, Nome has gained a reputation for its classic menu with a modern twist, an elevated and vibrant atmosphere, and loyal clientele. “We wanted to create a space with an energy and buzz that you can feel the moment you walk in,” said Nic Peterson, Nome’s general manager, who achieved his vision in the lively, chic dining room and passionate team of staff, ready to welcome patrons with enthusiasm and cheer. At Nome, diners are transported to the Tuscan countryside with a rotating menu of classic Italian dishes, including wood-fired pizzas, pasta, salads and regional entrees. The reginette, a wild boar ragù tossed in San Marzano tomato sauce, topped with chili flakes and romano cheese, has been a crowdpleaser since it first debuted. Another standout is the bucatini, a rendition of Cacio e Pepe, featuring lion’s mane mushrooms, Pecorino Romano and cracked Tellicherry peppercorns. Be sure to ask the server for a recommendation from Nome’s extensive and diverse Italian wine list for pairing with the meal. Recently, Nome began lunch service on select days of the week, serving their signature appetizers, salads, pizzas and new wood-fired sandwiches so guests can enjoy midday culinary delights. “We are incredibly grateful for the warm welcome we have received from the Bend community, and are excited to continue bringing the Italian food our customers crave,” said Peterson.
High Camp Taphouse brings the authentic flavors and warm hospitality of the Himalayas to Sisters, along with a wide selection of local craft beers and ciders. Owners Pema and Nurbu Sherpa grew up in Buddhist villages of the Himalayas before moving to Central Oregon more than 20 years ago. They previously operated the local food truck Himalayan Bites and are excited to continue sharing their roots with the Central Oregon community. “Sherpas are known for graciously welcoming strangers and hosting climbers in extremely remote places,” said Pema. “We hope to bring that deep commitment to hospitality to Sisters, treating guests as family and encouraging authentic, kind connection.”
The cuisine is heavily influenced by Pema’s mom, Chering Mendo, who owned a restaurant in the town of Kathmandu and later opened a tea house in her home village of Golphu. Among the offerings on the menu, guests will find Pema’s favorite dish, Thukpa, a flavorful bone broth-based noodle soup loaded with veggies and a choice of protein. Nurbu highly recommends the Masu Bhat, a chicken curry dish that’s delightfully spiced and packed with veggies.
Beyond their culinary offerings, Pema and Nurbu prioritize giving back, with a portion of their proceeds dedicated to expanding the educational opportunities for young Nepalis, especially young girls. So, stop by High Camp Taphouse to indulge in some of the region’s best Himalayan cuisine while also supporting inspiring philanthropic efforts.
Savoring the experience of eating goes far beyond nourishment; food is a powerful medium that creates lasting memories of moments shared. With its scenic beauty, outdoor adventures and vibrant culinary scene, Bend offers the perfect setting for complementing food with a memorable adventure. While the city boasts a range of excellent restaurants and cafes, one-of-a-kind dining options can be found just outside the city limits. From snowcat rides to rustic lodging at Elk Lake Resort, a farm-to-table meal in the Rainshadow Organics garden or sunset dinners on Mt. Bachelor, relish delicious flavors while stepping out of the ordinary.
Located 25 miles southwest of Bend, picturesque Elk Lake is home to a variety of summer and winter activities, including seasonal dining at the Elk Lake Resort Lodge. During the winter months, Cascade Lakes Highway seasonal closure makes Elk Lake Resort a remote destination. To access the lake, guests must arrive via snowmobile, cross-country ski, sled dog rides with Oregon Trail of Dreams, or snowcat.
For a winter experience by snowcat, guests meet Elk Lake Resort drivers in the afternoon at Dutchman Flat Sno-park off Cascade Lakes Highway, near Mt. Bachelor resort. After a scenic winter wonderland ride, guests arrive at the Elk Lake Resort Lodge surrounded by a pristine winter scene. Stepping inside the wooden lodge, the warmth of the crackling wood-burning stove, icicle-covered windows and rustic bar invite guests to shed their layers and get cozy.
The Snowcat Dinner Excursion menu is filled with hearty, comfort food-style dishes, and cocktails such as the adult hot chocolate or whiskey cider to help guests warm up. On special holiday nights, diners can expect an elegant three-course menu. “It’s a bucket list thing going out to a funky little lodge in the middle of the wilderness in the winter, and adding in fine dining leaves people shocked,” said owner Wendy Prieve. “The value to me is to see the look of surprise on people’s faces, it’s priceless.” Other offerings in the winter include the Moonlight Ski and Bite dinners that take place once a month on the night of the full moon. Adventurers cross-country ski the 11 miles in, enjoy a three-course meal, then ride a snowcat out. During the holidays, Elk Lake Resort offers a special menu—be sure to secure a ticket far in advance because this time is very popular.
When warm weather rolls around, usually in late May, Elk Lake Resort defrosts and becomes a summer haven. The lake, once frozen, welcomes sailboats and has a dock where summertime grub is served. On Saturday afternoons from June through Labor Day Weekend, enjoy the resort’s Music on the Water series with live entertainment, fresh-squeezed cocktails and handmade pizza. Unwinding at Elk Lake Resort in the summer is something locals have been doing for generations.
About 30 miles from Bend, Rainshadow Organics grows certified organic vegetables, herbs, flowers and grains on its 200-acre farm. In addition to CSA (community-supported agriculture) programs and selling wholesale, Rainshadow Organics also welcomes people onto its farm for decadent three-course brunches and four-course dinners. Guests can expect a bountiful meal filled with distinctive flavor profiles created with produce and grains harvested directly from the farm, plus unique cuts of pastured, grass-fed meat.
Longtable Dinners and Farm-to-Table Brunches, plus other pop-up on-farm events, started in 2016 as an attempt to preserve the bounty, said Melissa Harmon, Rainshadow’s event coordinator. Celebrating four seasons of Central Oregon’s harvests, the farm
holds a diverse collection of ticketed events year-round. From October to April, meals are held on the deck within a greenhouse enclosure and heaters. Dinner is served on live-edge tables made of juniper wood found on-site. In the summertime, dinners may be held in the garden, offering an immersive experience, or on the deck, with views of Smith Rock. Diners are served family-style on an outdoor long table with up to 50 guests.
“The idea is that you’re coming out and seeing what food you can eat from Central Oregon year-round and what it looks like to eat in a sustainable way,” said Harmon. During the summer, a Rainshadow Organics farmer, often owner Sarahlee Lawrence, gives a 45-minute tour of the garden at sunset. Guests walk through the garden with libations, say hello to different animals and listen as Lawrence speaks about farming and the concept of regenerative agriculture and biodynamic farming. “It’s a really amazing point in time for people to come out and have this connection with a real farmer,” Lawrence said.
During the summer months, from June until Labor Day Weekend, Mt. Bachelor offers sunset dinners at Pine Marten Lodge, which sits at an elevation of 7,775 feet. Guests ride the chairlift to the lodge and enjoy an elevated meal while taking in panoramic views of the surrounding Cascade Range. “Guests get to witness the sunset from the top of a mountain, which is quite an extraordinary experience,” said Brianna Batson, director of food and beverage at Mt. Bachelor.
The adventure begins at the West Village Parking lot where guests will check in at the Pine Marten chairlift and enjoy a scenic ascent to Pine Marten Lodge. Up top, guests are invited to grab a hand-crafted cocktail, favorite beer, or glass of wine and wander out to the deck to enjoy the sweeping views of snow-capped peaks. “It feels like your own little world,” said Batson. “The energy is a combination of excitement, awe and appreciation from each of the guests.” The sunset dinner menu is a three-course prix-fixe meal, offering creative family-style appetizers and entree selections, including steak, seafood and vegetarian dishes inspired by Pacific Northwest flavors. The pastry chef on-site makes desserts ranging from tiramisu to panna cotta.
At the end of the evening, guests take the scenic chairlift back down. “Whether you stay until the end and catch the starry sky or ride the lift as the sun sets over the Three Sisters and Broken Top mountains, it’s an amazing experience,” said Batson. Sunset dinners accommodate 120 to 150 people Thursday through Saturday, but reservations fill quickly and Batson recommends reserving about a month in advance.
Central Oregon’s timeless restaurants
WRITTEN BY LYDIA HAGENNew restaurants constantly pop up on Central Oregon corners, buzzing with trendy design and innovative energy. While exciting to visit, and filled with artistic menu options, there’s a lot to be said for comfort and nostalgia. Central Oregon has some groundbreaking new restaurants, but it is also home to eateries where menu items come with a side of history and a little sparkle of the region’s heritage. Even after some revamps, places such as Cowboy Dinner Tree, McKay Cottage, Pine Tavern and Dandy’s Drive-In have reminders of the past, a Central Oregon once upon a time.
A few miles outside of Silver Lake, the Cowboy Dinner Tree pays homage to another era, one that is still thriving in Lake County, Oregon: the Old West cowboy lifestyle. Angel Roscoe and her husband Jamie are now the owners of the restaurant, which was founded in 1992. Roscoe said she began working at the Cowboy Dinner Tree when she was 14 years old and eventually bought the restaurant from her parents. “We have people [dine] that I’ve watched grow up here,” Roscoe said, noting that some loyal customers have watched her grow up at the restaurant as well. A large juniper tree stands adjacent to the restaurant and is known by regulars as “the dinner tree.” Roscoe explained that the tree used to be a marking point for cowboys to know how far they had to ride to feed the cattle. Guests can extend their immersion in history by
booking one of the cabins on the property to stay overnight after their journey to Silver Lake. On the menu, diners can choose a whole roasted chicken or a Cowboy Cut top sirloin, complemented by a variety of side dishes, including hearty soup and old-fashioned sweet yeast rolls. Of the dessert favorites, the fresh marionberry and strawberry shortcake is the tried and true. “There’s really no recipe written down,” Roscoe said, adding that the menu has remained pretty consistent since 1992. “The authenticity is what people enjoy,” she said. “There’s nothing like it anywhere.”
Perhaps one of the most well-known stories to Central Oregonians is that of the 1916 craftsman bungalow that was moved from its perch on Mirror Pond in Drake Park to O.B. Riley Road in 1973. Named in honor of the former owners, Clyde and Olive McKay, and their son, State Senator Gordon McKay, the popular McKay Cottage Restaurant is owned by Pamela Morgan, who began her journey in the restaurant industry in Southern California. Morgan purchased the restaurant when it was called the Original Pantry, and changed the name to reflect the restaurant’s unique history.
“I’m in the breakfast business,” Morgan said. “[McKay Cottage] was always going to be breakfast.” Although the cottage atmosphere stays true to its historic roots, the menu changes twice a year, keeping customers guessing and coming back for more. “We’ve been here long enough that we’ve played an important role in people’s lives,” Morgan said. She said many loyal customers bring their visitors to McKay Cottage before stopping anywhere else in Bend. Although the comfort food menu is constantly evolving, one item Morgan said will always be found on the spring and summer menus is the lemon ricotta pancakes, a treat to savor year after year.
BELOW: McKay Cottage, built in 1916When it was established in 1936 by Maren Gribskov and Eleanor Bechen, the Pine Tavern made its lasting mark on the Bend community. “It was quite a bit of courage, they worked hard and it succeeded,” current owner Bill McCormick said, noting the restaurant opened on the heels of the Great Depression. “I am proud to be a part of the history.” McCormick, who brings an impressive amount of experience from the restaurant industry to Bend, including popular Portland restaurants McCormick & Schmick’s and Jake’s Famous Crawfish, said he retired and came to Bend to own the Pine Tavern. McCormick recalled visiting the restaurant, situated above the eastern shore of Mirror Pond, when he was a teenager and it was the place to après ski in Bend. Although the restaurant is now 87 years old, McCormick said it hasn’t changed much, even though it has passed through the hands of five owners. The
trademark of the historic restaurant is the iconic presence of two 300-year-old ponderosa pines that were enclosed during a renovation in the 1950s, bringing regional interest and charm. “The big challenge is maintaining the wonderful interior while still being consistent with the contemporary palate,” McCormick said. He noted that he wants the Pine Tavern to stay true to the past while also keeping it modern. Though there have been a few changes to the locally sourced Northwest fare, the tavern’s signature scones remain on the menu. McCormick said customers rave about these hallmark scones, made from scratch every day and paired with freshly whipped honey butter.
Established in 1968, Dandy’s Drive-In was an early hub for quick and delicious food and light-hearted service. Customers still drive into the designated spaces as servers roll out on skates, ready to take orders for juicy burgers, crispy fries and thick milkshakes. “Nearly 55 years later, and we’re still putting miles on skates, and we love it,” current owner, Tonimarie Scott said. “Skating is what makes Dandy’s Drive-In unique.”
Scott said there have been a few changes to Dandy’s menu, but overall, it’s still the same classic menu that the restaurant started with in the late ‘60s. Besides those mouthwatering cheeseburgers and french fries, Dandy’s is known for its house-made fry sauce which has kept customers coming back since the drive-in began. Park at Dandy’s Drive-In and travel back in time for a nostalgic experience right here in Bend. “There’s nothing better than a cheeseburger, french fries, fry sauce and a milkshake brought to you by a cheerful roller skating carhop,” Scott said. The retro vibe of Dandy’s radiates from its little pocket of happiness off Third Street in Bend.

Before diving into a day of high desert adventure, experience the handmade, nourishing goodness of Central Oregon’s beloved bakeries. Featuring their own niche specialties and dedicated to the spirit of community, these tried- and-true bakeries offer culinary inspiration on every level.
Tucked into a quiet, sunlit corner, a stone’s throw away from Newport Avenue, Nancy P’s Cafe & Bakery is known for its menu and a cozy atmosphere set aglow by stained-glass art in every window. Owned by Katy and Tommy Clabough, Nancy P’s is a staple for Central Oregon foodies who savor the welcoming environment filled with regulars devouring the signature breakfast pockets, blueberry scones, fresh cinnamon rolls or the sandwiches, stacked high atop house-made ciabatta or focaccia. The bakers behind the scenes have been working together for 12 years to make the original recipes passed down from Nancy P’s namesake, Nancy Pfeiffer, who opened the cafe doors in 1999. At the heart of it all is the delicious Nancy P’s bread that forms the foundation for the breakfast pockets and locally renowned towering sandwiches. “Everything we make is handmade, every single day,” Clabough said. “Our focus is on consistency, making this little place the best that it can be.” Wander over to Nancy P’s for fresh baked nourishment wrapped in a neighborhood spirit that captures the essence of Bend. Clabough shared, “It has always been my goal to create community, to be a mainstay for Bend, an inclusive, family-friendly place where everyone can feel at home.”
Set against the backdrop of the majestic Cascade Range, East Cascade Avenue in the town of Sisters is a thriving, character-filled step back in time. In the heart of it all, Sisters Bakery has greeted customers since 1981, featuring a case of tempting creations and a staff that never stops smiling. Home to Central Oregon’s most famous
sourdough, owners Gloria and Spencer Hamiga are dedicated to the overall enjoyment of the customer experience, and it shows. “People come to Sisters to have a good time, and we operate a fun, upbeat, engaging family environment,” Hamiga said. To Sisters’ bakers, creating their flagship sourdough is a source of pride. “What is special about our bread is the simplicity of the ingredients: flour, sea salt and water,” explained General Manager Macon Luhning, “But what makes it so complex and intriguing is the craft behind it, the mixing, the shaping, the fermentation; it’s the human hands that make it what it is.” Eager to share their love of bread-making, the staff is happy to send customers home with a portion of their signature sourdough starter. Sisters Bakery is an old-school Grandma’s bakery done right.
Look no further than Village Baker for rustic, world-class artisan bread. Situated just off Century Drive in a cheerful, bustling space, the bakery is always filled with loyal Bendites and visitors, happily awaiting their turn for Village Baker favorites. Owner Lauren Kurzman is passionate about making products that stand the test of time, achieving the best flavor and texture by focusing on quality from the inside out. Her 20-year-old son Ellis, who grew up learning the craft, added, “We use Old-World techniques that aid digestion and honor how our ancestors baked.” With a combined 50-plus years of experience, the artisan bread makers at Village Baker adjust for changes in weather and humidity and allow each loaf three-to-five days to ferment before they are hand-shaped to ensure the perfect crumb structure throughout, resulting in the delicate interior and crusty robust exterior Village Baker breads have become known for. A regional favorite, the signature Striata can be found on the tables of many fine eateries across Bend. The bakery is also known for its freshly made sandwiches and pastries, such as the favorite Chocolate Eddy, named after the Big Eddy rapids, a swirling dervish of chocolate and cream cheese baked into a butter crust. Drop by to savor the timeless art of baking and, if lucky, meet four generations of the Village Baker family. “We strive to treat each loaf of bread like the individual art piece it is,” Ellis said.
Sparrow Bakery fills a sunny southwest corner of Northwest Crossing Drive with baked goods certain to impress even the most refined palates. Before even indulging in a hand-crafted croissant or a powdered-sugar dusted Monte Cristo, customers feel the vibe of the Sparrow experience. “We’ve often been praised for the way it ‘feels’ to eat at or be at the Sparrow Bakery,” owner Whitney Keaton shared. Featuring a breakfast and lunch menu brimming with delicious options, Sparrow’s motto brings a down-to-earth character to the bakery scene. “Our motto has always been: ‘We may never be perfect, but we promise to be good,’” Keaton said, and good everything is. Beginning with the inspiration of buttery hand-laminated croissants in honor of her father’s Christmas tradition, Keaton’s goal is to create something special for the community to look forward to and enjoy, just like she did every Christmas morning. Their signature hand-laminated technique has created a following; locals go crazy for Sparrow pastries, especially the cardamom-vanilla Ocean Roll, rolled to perfection every day.
