New beginnings. Adelsheim Vineyard has been establishing vineyards in Oregon’s Chehalem Mountains since the early 70s. Each new acre of our LIVE certified vineyards starts with good old fashioned attention to detail: 100’ lengths of twine with tape marks placed 20’ apart are hand knotted together and anchored by two grounded shovels. Each tape mark indicates a post position in a new vineyard row. We’re expanding our 150+ estate acres in the Chehalem Mountains with a focus on Chardonnay and Pinot noir. Visit our scenic tasting room to taste the delicious results.

American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) Yamhill Valley has six distinct winegrowing regions, called American Viticultural Areas (AVAs): Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, McMinnville, Ribbon Ridge and Yamhill-Carlton. Each of these AVAs has its own hillside or valley microclimate and boasts a distinct soil identity. As a result, some wines carry hints of iron and others have a taste that is developed through the afternoon shade on the hills where the

grapes grow. The world began to take notice of the wines from this valley in the 1980s. The story, however, began 10,000 to 15,000 years ago, when the land began to rise from the Pacific, bringing a maritime richness deepened by lava flows and soils carried from floods originating in Montana and Washington.

WINE LAND

BOTTLING TERROIR In Yamhill Valley, discover a winemaking style devoted to sustainability and designed to bring out the flavors of the soil.

T

he date on a bottle of vibrant, elegant Yamhill Valley pinot noir might be 2008 or 1998. That date could just as well be 15,000,000 B.C., when the soils that built the terroir in this valley originated. From the vines that grow here come the grapes that produce some of the world’s best pinot noirs and pinot gris. Eons ago, the land began to rise from the Pacific Ocean, bringing a maritime richness that would be deepened by lava flows from the Cascades to the east and soils carried from the Missoula floods that disseminated from prehistoric Montana. Winemakers want to get the most from soil so rich and fertile. That’s why, as wine writer Katherine Cole said, “Oregon is ground zero for biodynamic viticulture in the U.S.” because of the widespread use of natural fertilizer and a common ethos within the region that promotes treating a vineyard as an ecosystem and respecting other plants and wildlife. The approach enriches the land with ingredients such as naturally aged silica (instead of chemicals made in laboratories that are sometimes seen in the wine industry). The holistic process brings winemakers out into the fields, and

facilitates a personal connection with the grapes. Sustainability is a guiding principle and a cherished value in Oregon, especially since the history of the land spans millions of years. Yamhill Valley has six distinct viticultural areas, resulting in wines that are as diverse and varied as the region itself. Become acquainted with the wines, and discover the subtle notes of flavor that are a testament to the winemakers’ care in preserving the natural flavor in each terroir. With a climate cooler than most winemaking areas and a winemaking style designed to bring out the terroir’s flavors rather than manipulate them, Yamhill Valley produces wines of subtle elegance and deep intensity, with undertones carrying all the richness of the land from which they grew. Sun-filled summer days are capped with cool evenings— think a Mediterranean climate without the humidity. It’s a perfect scenario for grape growing. All these elements culminate to create a valley rich in worldrenowned terroir fifteen million years in the making. For the discerning palate, the depth of flavor is endless.

WINE LAND

In late summer, the grapes begin to ripen.Veraison occurs when the fruit changes color. For the next six weeks, the fruit will develop flavors, sugars and tannins while reducing acids.

Beginning with budbreak in the spring, buds open up to start the growth of the shoots. As the shoots grow they develop blooms. These flowers pollinate, producing the seeds that are surrounded by the grape in clusters.

After that, the leaves fall off the vines, and the vines go into a period of dormancy before the cycle begins again in the spring. Below, winter pruning in the vineyards at WillaKenzie.

THE NEXT GENERATION

T

hough Oregon’s wine industry is relatively young compared to regions such as Bordeaux or Burgundy, there is already an old guard of winemakers and vineyard owners that has made its mark on the state’s wine industry. Recently, a new crop of winemakers has settled into the region, and its winemakers are already earning recognition and widespread acclaim. In the Eola-Amity Hills, Walter Scott Wines makes both pinot noir and chardonnay, but it’s the chardonnay that is earning the most recognition, tasting into the Oregon Chardonnay Symposium in 2013 and 2014. Founders Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon have been working in Oregon’s wine industry for almost two decades, but the duo didn’t start their winemaking endeavor until 2008. “Our first priority for our chardonnay is to translate place,” said Pahlow. “We aim to achieve this by producing elegant wines that are driven by minerality and freshness.” Pahlow said that the established wineries and vineyards were his inspiration when he decided to build his own label. “While starting a new business is always hard, we benefitted tremendously from the generations of winemakers and vineyard

16

owners who came before us and built this industry,” he said. Most recently, L’Angolo Estate opened in Dundee Hills. In 2012, Chase Renton and his parents purchased a nut orchard that had sat idle for twenty years, becoming wild and overgrown. The first bottles of chardonnay and pinot noir were released in 2016. In the coming year, Renton said they expect to triple their production to about 1,500 cases. L’Angolo currently has sixteen acres of pinot noir grapes planted and four acres of chardonnay grapes. A modern tasting room with wood detailing and glass walls overlooks the estate and an outdoor fireplace. The inviting space fits with Yamhill Valley’s tradition of bringing visitors in for a chance to meet the winemakers. Renton has also been working with established winemakers in the estate. One of those winemakers is Isabelle Meunier, known for her innovative work at Evening Land Vineyards, and who now has her own label called Lavinea. Meunier said she aims to create “timelessness in each bottle” by focusing on single-vineyard wines. “The region in Oregon has a few years behind it, but it’s still quite young,” said Meunier.

SEEING WINE STARS

J

ust more than fifty years ago, wine pioneer David Lett planted the Willamette Valley’s first pinot noir vines on the slopes of the Dundee Hills and uncorked an industry. Now home to more than 500 wineries, Willamette Valley has experienced rapid growth, and the pinot noir produced in the region continues to attract international acclaim. In 2016, Wine Enthusiast magazine named Oregon’s Willamette Valley its 2016 Wine Region of the Year for the annual Wine Star Awards. Started in 2000, the Wine Star Awards celebrate leading individuals, companies and regions in the wine industry. Chosen via a rigorous selection process by the magazine’s editors, the Willamette Valley was up against stiff competition—other nominees for Wine Region of the Year included Champagne, France; Crete, Greece; Sonoma County, California and Provence, France. Still, Paul Gregutt, contributing editor for the Pacific Northwest, said he felt his nomination had a very good chance. Citing Oregon’s international recognition and recent wine investments, he considered the recognition deserved and in good taste.

20

Gregutt first visited Yamhill Valley in the mid-1980s and has watched the region’s evolution from its early days. His first tasting trip included stops at wineries such as Erath, Eyrie, Ponzi, and Rex Hill, plus Nick’s Italian Café in McMinnville. “I was impressed by the visual beauty of the region,” recalled Gregutt, “and though the wines were not nearly as polished as they are today, there were certainly some gems, and a lot to recommend, which I did, and continue to do.” With news of the Wine Star Award still soaking in, the Yamhill Valley wine community remains pleased, but not smug, about the recognition. Harry Peterson-Nedry, founder of Chehalem Wines on the outskirts of Newberg, said that winemakers are “realistic about the mammoth marketplace in which we play, and what it takes to get due acknowledgement.” He said the honor inspires winemakers to appreciate the area’s roots while looking forward to inevitable growth. “We are just realizing our potential as a wine region,” he added. “After all, we are still getting discovered by people, even though we’ve been at it more than fifty years.”

WINE NOTES

I had been producing my own wines for

a few years before starting commercially, and my colleagues were excited. I was offering something new to an established industry. In fact, I’ve produced a pinot noir every year I’ve been in business but after getting media attention for my other wines, especially my lagrein, pinot kind of became my “dirty little secret.” What do you think sets Remy Wines apart from other wineries in the region? We do a lot that is unique. For example, our wines are aged anywhere from fourteen months up to three years in barrel—we even have a ten-year barrel aging project. We also have two labels but not two tiers. Three Wives are wines without rules while Remy Wines are all single vineyard, limited production, have extended barrel aging, are sealed with a glass cork and strive to be

Old World style. What are you excited about in Oregon’s wine industry right now?

Remy Drabkin Remy Drabkin knows Oregon wine well. After all, she grew up in Oregon as the state’s wine industry was coming of age. Drabkin started working at Ponzi Vineyards at 13 years old and, in 2006 when she was only 25 years old, she started her own winery with the labels Remy Wines and Three Wives Wines. While Three Wives produces pinot noir and chardonnay, Remy Wines is a novelty in the region, producing strictly Italian varietals. What was it like growing up in the wine industry here? It was a close-knit community of intellectual creatives and entrepreneurs who knew how to throw a good party. We celebrated everything together. Most of these explorers had relocated to the Willamette Valley—it

Yamhill Valley is focused on pinot noir and chardonnay. Why did you decide to go in a different direction for Remy Wines with Italian varietals?

Oregon is being recognized nationally and globally as a producer of high quality wines. Industry leaders have worked hard to achieve this, to garner not only the deserved recognition but to relay that message to the greater public. I’m excited to see that message go beyond pinot. The Oregon wine industry has seen a lot of growth recently, and my hope is that with that expansion and change, we will stay true to some pillars of Oregon,

CULINARY PALATE

PLATES FULL OF BOUNTY The small towns that dot Yamhill Valley are home to world-class kitchens.

Y

amhill Valley has cultivated a community of world-class kitchens, where the bounty of the valley extends beyond the vineyards. At JORY, which takes its name from a soil type, a farm-to-table ethos is in the restaurant’s DNA. Here at the signature restaurant at The Allison Inn & Spa, Executive Chef Sunny Jin likes equanimity. To wit: The two guys in jeans with a layer of dust that belies a long day working in the vineyards receive the same attention as the party of four just in from Paris. With every dish, Jin distills the richness of the Yamhill Valley, infusing it into his menu, which changes daily. To match the vast almost 1,000-label wine list that was nominated as a James Beard Foundation candidate for Outstanding Wine Program, JORY sends foragers out into the countryside, has buyers stationed on the Oregon docks, and draws from its own extensive gardens and those of nearby farms and vineyards. Jin will also help at local butcherings. Even with all this behind-the-scenes sourcing, Jin finds time to plate an elegant dish, such as a fillet from the spring Chinook salmon run paired with seasonal agricultural bounty. A few miles away, The Painted Lady, recently nominated as a James Beard Foundation candidate for Outstanding Service, sets out its own enthralling experience, serving

elaborate prix fixe meals in a charming, restored Victorian house. Also deeply connected to the Valley’s wines and resources, Chef Allen Routt offers dishes such as potato gnocchi with mushroom veloute and black truffle. For four decades, Nick’s Italian Café in McMinnville has been the hangout of the Willamette wine world. Nick’s is known for feeding crab lasagna to winemakers and accumulating legendary vintages. Nick Peirano has now been succeeded by his daughter and son-in-law, who have kept the café’s reputation as a landmark among the vines. There has also been a family succession at Joel Palmer House in Dayton, where chef Chris Czarnicki has taken over his father’s inspired, wild mushroominfused kitchen, where local pinot noir is matched with Oregon’s phenomenal fungi. Yamhill Valley is now a national dining destination, with a range of restaurants extending from the French country appeal of Cuvée in Carlton to the boutique precision of Thistle in McMinnville to the casual charm of Dundee Bistro and Red Hills Market. For those who want to get closer to the vines than a restaurant table, there’s also a plethora of delis, bakeries and cheese shops offering the makings for an outstanding winery picnic. Wineries graciously accommodate this by setting out welcoming tables for these pop-up feasts.

The bounty of “ the Valley extends beyond the vineyards.

With unusual offerings, such as German-style doppelbock, Golden Valley Brewery and Pub’s handcrafted brews have been the pride of McMinnville for more than two decades. Keep it local by ordering anything on the menu with the Angus beef that comes from the owner’s family-run ranch. Have time for another? Try Grain Station Brew Works, which features live music every Tuesday night and multiple craft taps pouring daily. In the heart of the wine strip in Dundee, Deception Brewery uses fruit in its artisanal products, with offerings such as apricot cream ale. Its taproom marks the perfect end to an afternoon of wine tasting. In Newberg, Chehalem Brewing Company has twelve house taps and ten guest brews. They also have mouth-watering pork tacos and pub food. In the summer, the rustic garage doors are usually open to the warm valley, where good atmosphere mingles with tasty brews. Just outside of Newberg, Wolves & People Farmhouse Brewery offers wood-aged, wild and farmhouse-style beers within the walls of their vintage 1912 barn. Wolves & People is open to all ages, and opens up to views of orchards and the Chehalem Mountains. Ready for more fermentation experimentation? Carlton Cyderworks is a family-owned micro cidery that invites you to “slake your thirst” with one of its ciders.

Along with fresh produce, Chehalem Flats Farm Market also supplies household items and gifts, all made locally in Yamhill Valley or in Oregon. The market is in Newberg and has a variety of ready-made snacks available. Grab a few on your way out to wine country or in between tastings. Blue Raeven Farmstand is known throughout the Valley for its pies. There are thirty-five varieties and seasonal recipes to choose from. CULINARY SCENE

How would you describe JORY’s style? The farmers and purveyors throughout our valley are the best resources when creating new dishes. In that sense, JORY is given more foundation by our community than our concept of it. SUNNY JIN

What are you doing to make JORY more sustainable? I could go on extensively about this subject as it remains at the center of our focus. We understand the impact of our decisions, and our goal for greater sustainability reaches further than just eco footprint and minimal packaging. One of our current programs helps neighboring farmers with clean foods for their livestock, which would otherwise have ended up in a landfill with little emotion. In the last six months alone we have utilized over 12,000 pounds of feed. What has been your favorite part about working in the Yamhill Valley?

of the same values of keeping ourselves regulated to a more responsible standard of culinary conduct. What new food trends in Oregon are you most excited about? Super cliché, but I feel the global trend to remain as local as possible holds distinction here in the valley. That is something to embrace and be proud of. That, and foods-on-a-stick.

Here, you can also get a taste of wine country at The Allison’s award-winning spa, where the signature treatment is the “pinotherapy.” Throughout the property, you’ll also find a substantial collection of work from Oregon artists. INSIDE LOOK

PLACES

The Vintages The Vintages, a boutique RV resort with classic travel trailers, opened in 2014. Renovated trailers come equipped with functional kitchens, propane grills and, yes, air-conditioning. There’s also a pool and hot tub on the property, outdoor lawn games to play and cruiser bikes. The best part may be the location: There are twenty wineries within a five-mile radius. Therese Straight, the property manager at The Vintages, gave us an inside look at this unique lodging destination. Where did you get the idea for The Vintages?

How did you find all the trailers? The vintage trailers have been completely renovated and modernized and date from the 1940s to the 1970s. The property’s new trailers were custom fabrication, designed to maintain the vintage aesthetic. Flyte Camp is continuously scouting for trailer candidates that would stand out in our collection. What kind of activities will guests find around the area? Winetasting would be a must-do activity. Sokol Blosser, The Four Graces and Stoller are all wonderful choices that are located near The Vintages. The Barlow Room and Red Hills Market are both great dining options. Archie’s Ice Cream and Eatery in Dayton is wonderful—you can get a treat and just enjoy downtown.

As the wine world’s spotlight shines increasingly on

Oregon wine country, Yamhill Valley is emerging as its true epicenter. With more acres in wine grapes than any other Oregon county, we are a leader in

WINERY MAP

production and in quality. Our wines are being rated among the best in the world by those who know. And yet, it’s just the beginning of why Yamhill Valley is a destination worthy of being on every traveler’s bucket list. This year, the Willamette Valley received the prestigious Wine Region of the Year award from Wine Enthusiast magazine, which recognizes the leaders in the wine industry from around the world. In the heart of Willamette Valley,

open

Yamhill Valley has been at the forefront of winemaking since the first pinot noir vines were planted in 1965. Each year brings more accolades not only for the wine produced in this fertile region, but also for the renowned chefs and restaurants that are redefining the culinary scene, including two nominations from the James Beard Award Foundation in 2016 and 2017. A collection of charming small towns and bucolic farms, Yamhill Valley overflows with the good life. It is authentic Oregon. Here, you may easily find yourself tasting a top-rated vintage with the person who made it, or savoring a fine dish and discussing with the chef the local ingredients that inspired it. Take in the spectacularly fertile landscape, teeming with a bounty of hazelnuts, olives, lavender, and berries of all kinds and meet the growers as you taste your way through it all. As you do, you’ll discover why this singular culinary scene is known for its progressive leadership in sustainable farm-totable practices. It’s all here in the Travel Yamhill Valley Wine & Culinary Guide, the premier source for navigating the region’s wine and culinary offerings, touring the natural wonders for which the Pacific Northwest is widely known and sampling outdoor adventure, too. At the end of each day, when you’re ready to rest your head and dream of imbibing the next day’s delights, you can select from our diverse lodging options, from charming inns to a luxury resort. At Travel Yamhill Valley, the destination marketing organization for this region, we believe the best way to experience our passionate, tightly knit community is to become truly a part of it, if just for a day. We invite you to join us in cultivating the good life, as we do every day.
