Introduction

The Evolution of A Revolution A guide to the inner mechanics of our designs at HQ

At Ørgreen, creativity is crucial to our company. That's why we have an entire floor dedicated to creative ideas. A space we call our Ørgreen Playground. Every week we sit together over coffee and Danish rugbrød (our famous square-shaped rye bread) to brainstorm and bounce ideas off each other. Inspiration often comes from the arts, given our passion for all things fashion, film, food, art, photography and music. So if someone has seen some incredible movie or tasted an outrageous meal, we all “share the love” of it. Inside this issue you’ll see a sampling of some of the people who fuel our creative fire. Including an interview with one of the most sough-after actors in Hollywood, who’s so good at playing bad guys. Fashion designers whose quirky couture morphs unexpected materials. Other designer anarchists who reinvent sci-fi style. Artists with an alternative angle on reality. Award-winning DJ’s, singers and a Danish pop band even applauded by Apple. Not to mention a personal interview with our chief designer and Ørgreen Co-Founder, whose mind works like a 3D app. You’ll also see a glimpse of our latest collection. Campaign images. Behind-the-scenes snapshots. Travel tips from our favourite cosmopolitan hang outs. A sneak peak at our evolving snow goggle designs. And lest we forget, an exciting new collaboration with a legendary icon of British eyewear, who have highlights of their career on display at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. In between months of travelling to New York, Tokyo, London and back, trade shows in Paris and Milan, we continue to keep our high standards high. In terms of craftsmanship. Inventing new, cool colour combinations. Developing our unique approach to matching diverse materials. While at the same time, exploring compelling new shapes. Have a look inside. And you’ll see why for us, work is so much more like play.

Sincerely,

Gregers Fastrup

Born Henrik Ørgreen with Claire Goldsmith

is

Oliver Goldsmith (OG) was founded 88 years ago, Ørgreen Optics was founded 17 years ago. Both have helped shape the eyewear industry with their cutting edge designs, use of new materials and innovative colours. Both share a passion for eyewear, attention to detail, uncompromising high quality and a celebrity following. However in terms of style, they’re almost opposites: classic vs. modern, old vs. new, timeless vs. trend setting and British vs. Danish. A unique foundation for a brand new alliance. Looking through vintage photos of Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Michael Caine, Peter Sellers and John Lennon, and you can’t help but find them wearing fabulous frames hand crafted by Oliver Goldsmith (OG) of London. Oliver Goldsmith was a true pioneer in re-defining eyewear as fashion. In fact, the Victoria and Albert Museum hosts a collection of Oliver Goldsmith eyewear spanning sixty years of design, which attests to their pivotal role in fashion and culture. Likewise, look for images of cult heroes, underground artists and rebels, and you’ll find their personalities echoed in Ørgreen’s sleek, streamlined designs. Enjoyed by the likes of Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga, Sam Worthingham and Mads Mikkelsen, just to name a few. Each company will retain its own brand name and identity, boosted by a behind-the-scenes alliance. Ørgreen will take on a big brother role, sharing industry insights, resources and distribution channels. Whereas the Goldsmith legacy will be expressed in fresh, new, innovative designs.

"We have admired the Oliver Goldsmith brand for years"

“We have admired the Oliver Goldsmith brand for years,” says Henrik Ørgreen. “They’ve been at the forefront of eyewear fashion for 88 years with an impressive legacy of design. Having built up our own Ørgreen brand from zero to a highly respected global brand, we have a deep understanding of how to support a similar business.” “Henrik and I have been friends for ages,” says Claire Goldsmith. “Ørgreen is a forward-thinking brand much like ours, with a similar outlook and set of values. So this is more an organic evolution of our friendship. The culmination of a long-term relationship built on admiration, trust, pride and respect.”

Claire Goldsmith is the fourth generation of Goldsmith eyewear designers. Claire revived the OG brand in 2005, replicating iconic designs from the family’s archive as well as refining key vintage editions echoing OG’s distinctive design DNA. In 2009, Claire established her own brand, Claire Goldsmith (CG), to create new, contemporary icons exuding a mix of mystery, glamour and allure. Attracting celebrities and style icons alike, such as Kate Moss, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Jude Law and Robbie Williams, among other A-listers. OG/CG and Ørgreen will operate from their respective HQs in London and Copenhagen, in an exciting new alliance destined to make headlines. So make room in your wardrobe …

Fashion designer Asger Juel Larsen is obsessed with pushing menswear into what he calls “psychotic sophistication”. An aesthetic anarchist who thrives in a warped world of warfare, romance and gothic utopia, we couldn’t help but gravitate towards Larsen’s sci-fi stories of rebels on a road trip. Like his previous collection, where arctic volcanoes are almost angelic and street punks awaken from a plane crash in a post-apocalyptic world of decadence and decay. Wearing aircraft safety-style vests with belts ripped apart like a broken ribcage. An MA graduate from the London College of Fashion, Larsen recently won the highly acclaimed International Woolmark Prize Europe, also won by fashion luminaries such as Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent. In keeping with Larsen’s twisted approach to futuristic fashion, we have collaborated on an Ørgreen collection of acetate sunglasses called AJL X Ørgreen. The look reflects a lifestyle that defies convention to signal confidence that doesn’t just come from eye contact. Aesthetic impact is achieved through juxtaposition, where blocks of neon green and orange are almost inflicted on sturdy, classic frames. The effect is regimented with a wicked, rebellious twist. Launched during Copenhagen Fashion Week, they will be available at selected stores worldwide from this coming Spring. Enjoy these backstage snaps showing a preview of our shared passion for designs with a defiant soul.

Armed with a Master’s Degree in Industrial Design and Design Management from Denmark’s Design School, Wandrup brings over 15 years of design experience within products, furniture, exhibition spaces, graphics and interior design. The Insider

Shifter

When Ørgreen was established back in 1997, the initial vision was to design sunglasses in a distinctive style characterised by clean curves, aggressive lines and cats eyes inspired by classic cars. A look that was cooler with more street cred than other brands at the time. Ironically, there aren’t a lot of sunny days in Denmark. Or classic cars. Despite this, Tobias Wandrup and his Co-Founders Henrik Ørgreen and Gregers Fastrup went on to make their mark in the high-end eyewear design sector.

No. ➁

It’s like playing pool. If you relax and follow your instincts, then you play a better game. “I’ve always been a shape person,” says Wandrup. “I love looking at them and designing them. If a shape gives me energy, makes me happy and feels right, then my instincts are telling that it’s a shape worth pursuing. After being in the business for 17 years, we are proud of the fact that the lines we’re working with now are based on the same ones we’ve been working with since we began.” Since then, Wandrup has honed his design skills to be much faster at designing right on target by shooting from the hip. And he can see the frames from all angles in 3D in his mind. “The shape has to fit your face and your expression,” explains Wandrup. “The style has to fit with fashion. The colours are where your taste comes in. The functionality has to work and the quality has to be high.” Typical Ørgreen frames have a sense of movement. Ergonomics. Even though they’re placed on your face, there’s nothing static about them. Simple, streamlined and sophisticated are key parameters for Ørgreen’s signature style. How does Wandrup go about starting a new collection? “Here it’s all about teamwork,” says Wandrup. At Ørgreen, we have our own creative playground. A room where we sit around, share ideas and spark ideas using headlines. Often we use our own frames in parallel. Usually a frame will remind us of a cult personality or film character. Sometimes we think of that person before or after our creative process.” Something which should come as no surprise, since another telltale sign of Ørgreen’s style involves references to film icons, anti-heroes and renegades. For Wandrup, inspiration can come from anything. “I take a lot of snapshots,” says Wandrup. “It could be a car, a building, a surface or even food. If it catches my eye and swims around in my mind, I zoom in on it. When it comes to new colour combinations, Sahra is the colour goddess. I’m much more into shape, functionality and building up the concept. Sahra delves into the colour details. Colour plays a big role, even when we do trade shows, such as the colour of the booth, the displays, all that.” Your most important feelings are conveyed through your eyes. It’s where people pick up on your mood. Wear two different frames and you have two different personalities. Wandrup and his team are in the midst of designing pieces now - for the collection a year from now. So it’s all very hush hush. What can Ørgreen fans look forward to? “We’re working with lighter, simpler frames and at the same time, something chunky and heavy. We’ve done research and are quite far in how to produce them. There are a lot of things going on but it’s still a secret. Only when something is perfect do we come out with it.” In other words, watch this space…

New Campaign

In homage to our fascination with film, our new Ørgreen image campaign echoes the subtle nuances and sensual style of French New Wave and Film Noir, with a touch of Shakespeare contemporised. Seen in a series of photos capturing the unpretentious elegance and unspoken emotions between a couple. In true cinematic style, there’s tension. Drama. Intrigue. Ambiguity. And symbolism. With stolen moments by the poolside and glimpses of a cool 1967 Lincoln Continental. All achieved with supreme wardrobe styling, from darkly delicious suits to a touch of glam - accentuated with selected frames from our upcoming Ørgreen collection. Featuring a range of styles from our signature chic and sleek designs to re-invented Ørgreen classics in compelling new colours.

The stars in this dramatic interlude include the tremendously talented Nikolaj Hübbe, who is the Artistic Director of the Royal Danish Ballet, known for his electrifying performances as the principal dancer at his previous home, the New York City Ballet. And his alluring female co-star, model turned actress Katharina Damm, who recently appeared in two talked about Hollywood films “The Giver” and “St Vincent De Van Nuys”. We were thrilled to work with photographer Casper Balslev, one of Denmark’s young, rising stars who has received a lot of recognition. Working with a team of 13 people behind the scenes, the photo shoot started at a very regal estate home north of Denmark’s capital and ended on the rooftop in the heart of the city with amazing views of the Copenhagen sky and the top of the Marble Church. Enjoy this preview of our newest collection available at one of our retailers near you.

Interview

His range of characters is immense. From playing a pusher, policeman, aid worker and Coco Chanel’s Russian composer lover to a barbaric Viking warrior and Knight of King Arthur’s round table. Mikkelsen is currently playing the baaaadest character to grace the screen: Hannibal the Cannibal. We spoke to this titan of a talent to find out why he’s so good at playing bad guys. And how looks can be deceiving.

Mads

If it’s true that “The clothes maketh the man”, then Mads Mikkelsen is quite a chameleon. Whether he’s playing an 18th century physician in a lavish, costume drama or a drug addict wearing a hoodie, Mikkelsen digs deep into the soul of each character to find something human he can relate to, embody and build upon. He’s known for his deadpan delivery and understated intensity brewing just beneath the surface of his striking chiseled features. Along with his ambiguous smile, which could easily swing from warm to bloodcurdling cold. For his role as Hannibal, Mikkelsen’s secret to getting into character: “I arrive on the set hungry.” Looking at Mikkelsen’s growing list of cinematic accomplishments, what stands out is his frequent casting as the bad guy. Such as his suave, sadistic portrayal of Le Chiffre, Bond’s nemesis in Casino Royale. And his mesmerising performance as the epitome of evil, Hannibal Lecter in the American cult TV series Hannibal. Unlike your typical monster, who we see suffering from inner anguish, Mikkelsen’s depiction of Hannibal is quite the opposite. A confident, cunning man who exudes elegance. “Hannibal loves fine art, classical music and three-piece suits,” explains Mikkelsen. “I try to make him human. To see him as a reverse person. Instead of a psychopath, I see him as a fallen angel. He opens a door and finds beauty where we would find horror. He’s full of emotions like you and me. And full of passion - just not the same things we would be passionate about.” Of course, despite Hannibal’s refined tastes, he could easily turn an enemy into a gruesome gourmet dinner. Mikkelsen’s secret to getting into character: “I arrive on the set hungry.” So why is Mikkelsen so good at playing bad guys? “If I can reflect something in them that people recognise in themselves, that’s what makes them even scarier,” says Mikkelsen. “If you feel you have nothing in common with a character, then emotionally you put him at arm’s length.” Likewise, when Mikkelsen plays good guys, he searches for some kind of flaw or weakness. Whether playing the predator or the prey, like his award-winning portrayal in The Hunt of a teacher falsely accused of sexual misconduct, Mikkelsen’s composure under pressure evokes in us a mix of empathy and outrage. “The eyes are the windows of the soul.” Not surprisingly, what inspired Mikkelsen to get into acting in the first place were Martin Scorcese’s dark dramas from the 70’s. Subversive characters played by Robert DeNiro, Christopher Walken and the like. “Taxi Driver opened my eyes to the anti-hero,” adds Mikkelsen. “Someone you dislike. In Hollywood, we’re so busy creating sympathy. But with Taxi Driver it was different. Instead of giving me a lot of answers, it gave me a lot of questions.” Given the variety of Mikkelsen’s roles so far, is there any character who would be too evil for his sense of integrity? “No,” admits Mikkelsen. “The only characters I would never go for are the ones badly written. If it’s a good story, my challenge is to figure out what’s going on in their heads and then breathe life into that. I have yet to see the limit to what type of role I could take on.” One detail we couldn’t help noticing is that Mikkelsen often plays a character with a defective eye. The lethal One Eye in Valhalla Rising. Rochefort in The Three Musketeers. Le Chiffre in Casino Royale. “The eyes are the windows of the soul,” says Mikkelsen. “If you take one away, you end up with something enigmatic.” With that, Mikkelsen gives his signature smile. Something in between happy and haunting.

He subsequently established the MAD Symposium, an annual gathering of chefs and food aficionados with an appetite for all things cuisine.

Two years ago, Noma went nomadic with a 10-day pop-up restaurant hosted by Claridge's luxury hotel in Mayfair, where he went so far as to fly in live ants foraged in Denmark over to London for the special occasion. Interview

Nikoline Liv Andersen invites us on a visual voyage fusing couture with our subconsciousness. Taking textiles to 3D extremes by morphing materials transformed beyond recognition. The result is a riveting realm of fantasy and special effects amidst an aesthetic staging of messages far beyond fashion. Creating evocative images which are at once ethereal, other worldly and utterly enthralling. A graduate from Denmark’s Design School who interned with John Galliano at Dior in Paris, Nikoline Liv Andersen challenges our concept of clothing. Avoiding trends and target groups in her quest to re-define fashion as a high-end, personal form of performance art. Many of Andersen’s creations have a dreamy look and feel, such as butterfly wings, spikey headdresses and formations in fur. She experiments with all kinds of materials aside from fabric, leather and lace to design her own textiles. She’s made a dress out of nails and another one out of 45,000 straws. Transforming tiny components from everyday objects into amazing organic textures. “What inspires me most is nature,” says Andersen. “Nature is beyond everything that man has the ability to create. Like the surface of crystals and stones, and the structures of leaves, fur and feathers.” By comparison, her visually arresting designs make fashion as we know it bordering on the banal. Photos of Andersen’s garments involve an elaborate staging of elements. A visual storytelling scenario vs. here’s a hat and that’s that. “I aways want to tell a story in my projects,” adds Andersen. “It can be a little story or a poem I’ve written that I want to visualize.” There’s also a fairy tale feeling in much of her work, but with a dark undercurrent. Reflecting one of Andersen’s key themes - the inevitability of death. If she could negotiate with death, how would she strike a deal? “I wish I could strike a deal,” admits Andersen. "I'm always questioning this dreadful, irreversible deadline that makes our existence so limited." Wondering why we are placed on Earth when we are going to die anyway. I simply don’t get it. Actually I made a textile project for Saga Furs called Vanitas, where I imagined how to stand face to face with death. It’s a huge fear of mine but also a big inspiration.”

No. ➁

An open mind to the unpredictable In her process of creating, Andersen searches for a magical moment. Until she’s there, she simply cannot stop. “I love sitting for hours on end working on complicated, time-consuming techniques with intricate, delicate details,” admits Andersen. "I keep on working and working, forgetting time and deadlines. Keeping an open mind to the unpredictable.” So what role do clothes play in real life? Do they reflect the essence of our inner selves? Are they a playground for other facets of our personality? Or are they a type of armour protecting us from others? According to Anderson, the answer is "All. The possibilities of clothes are endless." Andersen continues to blur the boundaries between fashion and performance art, seen in a variety of venues. She recently won the “Pimp My Coat” Award in collaboration with Saga Furs by Remix, an award organised by Vogue Italia. This year alone, she boasts solo exhibitions at the Martin Asbæk Gallery, the Danish Design Centre and Horsens Art Museum, and is participating in an exhibition at the National Museum of Denmark. Next on the agenda? “I’ll be having a solo exhibition in Paris at La Maison du Danemark from January to March this year. It opens during Haute Couture Fashion Week and continues until after the Prêt à Porter.” Keep your eyes on this name worth knowing at nikolinelivandersen.dk

Currently presenting a weekly show on Danish National Radio channel P6 Beat, in between he's also rocking a schedule of countless DJ gigs and production work. A workaholic who brings high quality and personality to the electronic music and club scene, Buda is getting even more claim to his fame worldwide with upcoming shows in Hanoi, Paris, Oslo, Copenhagen, Tunisia, Portugal, Hamburg and Cairo in the upcoming months. With a career that spans over four decades, Buda couldn’t be more on top of his game. Hip hop and reggae were all the rage when Buda began his DJ career back in the 80's. He moved to New York and was made resident DJ at the club The Haunt. Returning to Denmark in the late 90’s, Buda formed the blissed out dub crew Banzai Republic, and was the mastermind behind some of the memorable album releases and production work on fellow Danish legend Kenneth Bager’s successful Music For Dreams label. Buda went on to become the resident DJ at some of Copenhagen's first underground clubs in the 00’s, such as the infamous Vega Nightclub and the Verydisco Club Lounge every Wednesday, hosting the coolest lounge floor ever to grace the Copenhagen stage. After gravitating towards the tech house scene, Buda became part of a new breed of Danish producers who defined the cool signature electronic sound of Scandinavia, dominating Europe’s electronic scene in the end of the 00’s.

Buda’s own contribution came when he teamed up with Thomas “T.O.M” Bertelsen to create Lulu Rouge. Q&A

Shooting Mette Lindberg, Asteroids Galaxy Tour

Star Why the name The Asteroids Galaxy Tour? We wanted our name to sound like an experience, a trip, something that might as well be the title of a movie. The name came from one of our good friends ‘Miloud Carl Sabri’, who has a brilliant mind and also played the trumpet in our band.

Mette Lindberg wearing Capote 425

Any anecdotes from dealing with Amy Winehouse, Anne Wintour, Apple or Heineken? One time we played at a Rolling Stones party on a mountain top in Brazil. The main actor from the Heineken commercial, where they had us performing our song The Golden Age, jumped on stage really drunk but happy to dance and sing with me and the band. The security guards didn’t know what to do. So they grabbed him and tried to throw him off stage. While he was struggling to get loose, he managed to jump right back on stage, only to be dragged off again, even though I tried to communicate that it was alright. It was quit fun, as most people knew who he was. What fuels your fire to create? It really depends on what it is I’m working on. But if something or someone pisses me off, provokes me or touches me emotionally, it fuels my creativity, eagerness and desire. How would you describe your personality off-stage vs. on? I really love to play live. It’s so special and makes me feel free. Sometimes I’m more hyper and outgoing than other times, depending on my state of mind. I guess it reflects who I am, also off stage.

What other TV, film or global brand gigs are on the horizon? I can’t reveal any of that yet, but I would love to have our music on the soundtrack of a Quentin Tarantino movie.

KAMPIN KAPPELI The Kampin kappeli, also called “Chapel of Silence”, is situated right in the busiest part of downtown Helsinki. While its massive, wooden oval shape stands out from the landscape, it's almost hidden from view until you’re standing right in front of it. Take your time, take a breath and enjoy some peace and quiet from this spectacular building that was constructed as part of the World Design Capital program in 2012. helsinginkirkot.fi/fi

MOLITOR Back in 1929, Molitor was the most popular public pool and bath in Paris. An amazing Art Deco building for the rich and famous, the elegant, avant-garde ambience set the scene for all kinds of galas. After closing in 1989, it fell into disrepair and became a haunt for graffiti artists until 2007, when the mayor of Paris led a campaign to renovate this historical monument. Since then, interior architect Jean-Phillipe Nuel has transformed Molitor into a stunning pool, private club, hotel, spa, restaurant and bar, where they still carry on their legacy of artists, seen in their décor, exhibitions and events. mltr.fr/en Photo: Agence Nuel - Gilles Trillard

SOCIAL POOL Somewhere in California’s Mojave desert is a swimming pool just waiting for you to discover. Literally. It’s in a remote location with no infrastructure, roads, trails or signs to lead you there. You are invited to visit a museum, get the keys and GPS coordinates - then finding it is totally up to you. It’s an interesting concept by Austrian artist Alfredo Barsuglia, famous for his interactive sculptures, and his partner on the project MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Hollywood. The concept is meant to reflect how far we would go in the pursuit of luxury. If you do go, bring lots of water but don’t reveal its location. The rules are - you have to keep it a secret. social-pool.com / makcenter.org

THE JANE Michelin-star chef Sergio Herman and chef Nick Bril found an unusual venue for their “fine dining meets rock ’n roll” vision: the chapel of a former military hospital in Antwerp. They engaged the talents of famous Dutch design firm Piet Boon® Studio to revamp the interior. The result is a mythical restaurant experience, with the kitchen right where the alter used to be and windows appearing like church decorations. Take a closer look and you’ll see cooking accoutrements, such as pots and knives, as part of the intriguing ornaments. The Jane is a high-end restaurant with friendly low prices and a must go-to place for any fan of food.

CARAVAN MADE In Barcelona, a new genre of street food vendors is shaking up the culinary scene. Caravan Made is the new kid on the block getting loads of attention from local and tourist foodies alike. Operating out of a vintage trailer from the 70's, owners Silvia Cabra and Javi Ruz draw on Ruz’s background in hospitality and Cabra’s training as a pastry chef to create handmade sandwich sensations with fresh vegetables and inventive toppings. We love the concept and cannot wait to try them the next time we’re in town. caravanmade.com Photo: Héctor Hernández

The Summit of Snow Goggles

We are proud to be the first Danish brand to introduce a true technical goggle impeccably crafted from premium materials. In fact, we went the extra mile to try them out ourselves. Joined by photographer Camilla Hylleberg, Ørgreen Sales Director Gregers Fastrup, a ski enthusiast since he was a kid, ventured to the top of Trolltinden in the Northern part of Troms in Norway.
