Plotting a course for the future of orienteering in Victoria Outgoing OV President Mark Hennessy gives us a snapshot of recent developments and a vision for the future WOR DS & PICTURES MARK HENNESEY

One leg at a time For a sport that is all about plotting a course then navigating it successfully to our chosen destination, we do not always apply that method systematically to the administration across our sport. We more often tend to plan our strategic journey one leg at a time, rather than our future course as a whole.

This approach is easier, more immediate, and helps us to improve in an incremental way. In some ways it is better suited to volunteer administrators, who simply don’t have the time or the broad knowledge of our operations to update the overall strategic plan as a whole. It’s like renovating or extending a house, rather than a comprehensive rebuild.

This stepwise improvement yielded bumper crop of fruit during 2017, with two main highlights: • the appointment of Rob Fell to the new role of Executive Officer in the second half of 2017.

• the launch of OV’s new website in December 2017, along with a new OV logo.

These two important innovations were planned long before I took office as President in May last year, and I cannot claim any credit for them, despite being very pleased that they happened.

Changing the guard – welcome Rob Fell Rob is a school teacher, a stay-at-home dad (when he is not working in his part-time role for OV) and an experienced orienteer who has represented Victoria at schools and open competition.

He brings a passion for and knowledge of all aspects of orienteering, including technically specialised knowledge such as geographic information systems and cartography. He is adept at contemporary computer software and social media platforms. His skill set aligns very well with OV’s current and future needs.

Rob is a people-person. He understands and relates to orienteers and students of all ages including the youngest. He has empathy with our young orienteers and an infectious enthusiasm.

Rob is also a strategic thinker and will help Orienteering Victoria as an organisation to structure its volunteer force and its committees to deliver good management and development of the sport.

Farewell and thanks to Peta Whitford When Rob was recruited, Peta Whitford was able to plan to retire in mid 2018, giving the two of them almost a whole year

to undertake a seamless transition from Peta’s role to that of Rob. Peta has done everything asked of her by Orienteering Victoria in her 27 years of dedicated service as our employee. Her experience and knowledge of orienteering participation, organisation and teaching have been imparted through reliable hard work, preparedness, thoroughness, attention to detail, punctuality and seeing things through. She has a very successful record in attracting grants and administering projects for the benefit of orienteering.

A generation of young orienteers have enjoyed Peta’s work with schools, culminating each year in the Victorian Secondary Schools Orienteering Championships (May) and the Victorian Primary Schools Orienteering Championships in Term 4. Over many years most of our young orienteers have participated in these events.

Peta’s position has been self-funded on a cost-recovery basis, charging fees for corporate and school clients. Victoria is the only state to have managed to succeed in making this approach work over a long period. She has been well supported by a reliable band of volunteers and subcontractors.

Presidential change-over and a new vision Bruce Arthur announced that he would not accept re-election at the 2017 Annual General Meeting.

Bruce’s 7 years of leadership has been marked by a steady hand at the tiller, a cool head in the many skirmishes and squalls that blow in and blow over in orienteering in Victoria, and a steely resolve, which he does not often need to call on, but it is there when needed. Bruce is ever the gentleman, polite and gracious. Thank you Bruce for a sustained period of stability and growth. My favourite image of you is powering smoothly through the bush, always on course, and without bluster or fuss.

I accepted nomination as President to try to implement some things I had long thought were important including: governance, stakeholder and partner relations, making the sport fun, and developing a strategic plan. I planned a oneyear hit-and-run presidency to achieve what change I could.

Most of my energy has gone into leading the project to develop draft Child Safety Standards, which are scheduled to be put to the June 2018 OV Council Meeting for adoption.

I have tried to add a bit of spark and colour to the weekly newsletter and present some of the personalities who love our sport, especially people who do not frequent podiums. I have thoroughly enjoyed my year as President and have thrown

myself into the role. Thanks to the many people who have encouraged and supported me along the way. One kind reader recently wrote: “Your weekly landmarks give a personal engagement factor to the weekly bulletin”.

I am very optimistic about what Rob Fell and future Boards will bring to help more people to enjoy orienteering. My focus will now shift towards rebuilding orienteering in the Macedon Ranges region.

Great leaps forward achieved in 2017 and early 2018 It has been a year of exciting renewal. Some key changes for the future include: • Patrick Jaffe is leading our social media services - taking over as newsletter editor and also Facebook and other platforms. This articulate orienteer’s enthusiasm and knowledge of the sport and its characters, and his experience representing his country at Junior World Championships, are immediately generating enthusiasm among members of all ages and interests.

• Our completely new web site was launched in December, with a cleaner, more user-friendly design including a new OV logo. This has been one element of our social media development strategy, led by an enormous amount of high quality skilled voluntary work from Margi Freemantle and Debbie Dodd.

• The appointment of Warwick Davis to the voluntary position of Mapping Liaison Officer. This will help us leap over the chasm between the era of (now almost extinct) stereo photogrammetry from film-based aerial photographs to LIDAR. The new process generates a highly detailed base map, but you need specialised computing skills to commission the outputs you want, and to work with them. There are only a handful of orienteers in Victoria who know how to do this, and particularly how to convince organisations that have already paid for flights to generate the LIDAR data to allow us to use it at an affordable cost.

Having Warwick on our team will be a big help. We are also lucky that our own Neil Barr is National Mapping Coordinator.

• Trialling of mobile phone based “punching” systems by Bendigo Orienteers and the Geelong and Western Summer Series will inform the potential introduction of these apps to best advantage into appropriate parts of orienteering. These and other apps will offer the prospect of more opportunities for orienteering participation for less volunteer time and effort, and for family members who have other commitments at 7 pm on a week night.

• The continuing rebuilding of bush orienteering, led by Bush Orienteering Operations Coordinator Laurie Niven.

MelBushO is leading a resurgence of young families trying BushO. It is clear that the majority of people prefer to orienteer close to home. The premier events will still have strong support, but mass participation will be via bush and park events close to the population centres. We are gradually seeing more cross-over of park and street orienteers into SprintO and bushO, and vice versa.

So there is plenty of energy and enthusiasm at all levels of our sport. We need to tune into our likely audience – many of them orienteers who will wish they had discovered our sport earlier – and smooth their entry to the enjoyment of organised navigating by map. Good luck and good hunting in 2018 and beyond.

Vics ‘Finnish’ strong at JWOC 2017 In July, three Victorians travelled to the city of Tampere to experience a Junior World Championships in one of the centres of world orienteering, Finland WOR DS PATRICK JAFFE P HOTOS SUSAN GUINANE

In order to prepare for this, we spent time in the lead up to the races training on nearby areas culminating with an official team camp. This ended up being a really memorable experience as we spent the week at a farm stay run by a former Finish biathlon champion, Juokku and his wife Malu. We ended up getting all kinds of unexpected bonuses from them such as an authentic smoke sauna experience (complete with a beautiful nearby lake to use as a plunge pool to maximise the recovery), impromptu motivational speeches by Juokku most nights, a trip to the local biathlon club (where Aston demonstrated that it’s not just his compass bearings where he can accurately aim str8) and some incredible vegan feasts using local produce.

Despite the fact that the whole jwoc team were equally lacking in upper body muscles, from the moment we arrived, our hosts decided to pick on Patrick and dubbed him ‘Mr Muscles’. They continued to direct so much abuse at him that he challenged Juokku to an arm wrestle at the end of the week. When the big day of the contest arrived, Juokku made it appear like a close battle for about the first 3.4 seconds before brutally crushing Mr Muscles’ dreams.

Despite this devastating loss, we entered the competition week buzzing with team vibes, confident in how we’d cope with the local terrain and with the pulse of Finland’s unofficial

JWOC opened with the Middle Distance races were a little disappointing for the Aussie contingent as we had no A final qualifiers for the first time in many years. This was mainly due to an easy-ish qualifier where a lot of us had clean runs but were slightly off the pace and also some disappointing mispunches.

The Middle final day was filled with lots of controversy as the organisers had decided to hold the public race (part of Finn5 week) in the morning before the JWOC race but on the same map. In an attempt to make things fair for JWOC runners, the organisers put up the map for Course 1 of Finn5 at our accommodation that morning and our coach Ralph Street (a former Victorian Coaching Scholar) took a photo of it and put it

on twitter so the teams not staying at the main accommodation would have access to it too. No one thought anything of it until we were all in the quarantine waiting for our starts and an organiser asked to speak to Ralph. Not knowing what it was about, we had a bit of a laugh about it, teasing him with “Oooooh, Ralphy’s in trouble!” but it turns out that he actually really was. The Finn5 organisers had stripped him of his coaching accreditation and told him that he was banned from being part of JWOC. Not exactly the kind of news you want to be given a few minutes before one of the biggest races of the year but we got on with it and had decent enough runs.

Luckily the JWOC organisers didn’t actually have a major problem with what he did so they gave Ralph back his accreditation later that day but it definitely caused a lot of unnecessary stress for all involved. We quickly moved on though and the sprint day that followed was a great event for the Australians and New Zealanders. The organisers surprised nearly all of us by running us straight through the town that we thought the sprint race would be in on the way to the start and actually having the whole course contained in a small but complicated industrial area. The Victorians all had solid runs

(Aston ending up in 32nd place) but the real excitement of the day was in watching our teammate Joe Dickinson have an incredible run to end up 17th at his first JWOC and then seeing Tommy Hayes from New Zealand take out the silver medal (only 8 seconds behind Oli Ojanaho who won every individual race)!

After a rest day where we hosted a morning tea for the various Aussie parents/supporters (consuming a ridiculous amount of cinnamon buns in the process) and treated ourselves to more recovery time in the sauna, it was time for the long distance.

Set by two time world champion, Jani Lakanen, this was a tough day out with some interesting long legs across quite a green map. Aston pulled out a terrific race to earn 28th place, a sensational effort that shows his potential for the next three JWOCs. On the last day of the competition, all three Victorians played crucial roles in guiding the Australian women’s and men’s teams to respectable 16th and 17th places.

Overall, we had a lot of fun on this trip and all had runs that we were proud of during the week but it’s also left us all very fired up about the 2018 championships in Hungary where we’re aiming for big things!

A return to Monash It’s been a decade since we last sprinted at this Monash University campus – and it’s certainly changed!

It’s been a decade since we last sprinted at this Monash University campus – and it’s certainly changed! There are far more buildings, paths, courtyards, angles, nooks and crannies.

Peter Dalwood completely remapped the campus for the Victorian Sprint Championships, but did not include all the available campus on the map, holding a piece back to be unveiled at the Melbourne Sprint Weekend scheduled for March 2018.

Peter also took on the Course Planning for the championships with Kathy Liley controlling and they were ably helped by Dandenong Ranges Orienteers in running the event.

It would not be a campus sprint if there was not an element of drama happening in the final hours before an event. This event was no different, with Peter and helper Pam King coming across a construction fence being erected across a logical route choice. A quick modification to the map was required and a ‘purple’ pen tucked into the on-the-day kit just in case there were some more last minute surprises. The only last minute surprise was finding some more work was scheduled to happen near the arena, but luckily this was easily managed.

The day however belonged to the winners. The results reflected all the training that had taken place over the course of the Sprint into Spring series, especially the junior grades. It was great to see all the smiles on the podium.

Spring time in Melbourne – Sprint season!

Sprint into Spring is now a regular feature of the Victorian Orienteering calendar with competitors vying for the series jerseys, and new course planners get an opportunity to set their own style of course ART ICLE BY DEBBIE DOD D & MARGI FREEMANTL E

the start of another great series. Asha Steer made her debut as a SIS course planner. Asha is Victoria’s top junior elite woman orienteer, and is also a UniMelb student. “I just set the sort of course I like to run”. It was a true Sprint course, with route choice on almost every leg, and constant changes of direction.

It was certainly a crowd pleaser, and a great way to kick off the series.

Event Two: Oxley College

In 2017, Orienteering Victoria’s Coaches-in-Residence played a large part in the series with five new course planners being mentored by our British Coaches-inResidence, Peter Hodkinson and Will Gardner, and our outgoing Coach-in-Residence, Mikkel Kaae-Nielsen both planning the last event and updating the map for it.

Event One: University of Melbourne This may have been the last event at this venue for some time as a large construction project was scheduled to commence shortly after the event. The weather gods turned on a perfect day – not too hot, not too cold, just right - setting the scene for

There’s always a buzz when we use a new map, and Oxley College was no exception. From the air, images of Oxley College are deceptive. It’s not until you get in there on the ground that you realise how many small buildings, multiple levels, nooks and crannies, and twists and turns the campus has to offer. Competitors quickly found out what they were in for when course planner Ewen Templeton sent them straight into this area. Competitors then popped out for a sprint leg across the oval before turning over their maps for Part 2 and immediately being faced with a long hill climb which must rate up near the top for a jersey contending hill climb. This was another fantastic afternoon of sprint racing at its finest.

History was made today when, for the first time in five years, the Sally Pearson course had more competitors than the Mo – and was it competitive! Jensen Key had to work hard for a victory in the Men’s event with Haydn Tang and Mason Arthur both vying with him for the lead, and then Callum White having worked consistently up the field, pipped Hayden for third place. An exciting battle also started to form for the

Brody McCarthy was particularly impressive this week, with Brody fastest on both the back-to-back Sprint and Hill Climb legs.

Event Three: VU Edgewater VU Edgewater is never a venue where you simply turn up and put out the controls. There’s always something else going on for a little extra complication – as if the campus isn’t complicated enough. First time there it was the giant sprinklers which played havoc with the legs that zigzagged across the gardens and terraces. Then it was the wedding ceremony carefully positioned right next to a control – wonder how many orienteers made it into the wedding video? This year, there was a very large crane parked right in the middle of the course blocking a crucial route choice – something to do with emergency repairs to the air conditioning. Luckily it was gone by 1pm when the event started – but there was another bemused wedding party right next to a control. Course planner Martin Kozma started with a taste of the Edgewater Estate sending everyone north into the small streets before a run beside the Maribyrnong River. Then ducking through the (not

Event Four: RMIT Bundoora West With temperatures soaring, this was less Spring and more Summer. RMIT Bundoora was making its debut as a Sprint Into Spring map, with previous uses having been for the Vic Champs and Melbourne Sprint Weekend. It has a series of smaller, irregular buildings on the southern side, a couple of large buildings in the middle which make for longer legs; some ornamental lakes to the east, and open or treed terrain to the west. Throw in some new construction fences, and you had a real mixture on your hands. Course planner David Knight sent competitors straight into the melee with a series of short legs, then some hard running around the periphery (where the heat became another factor) before finishing at the large, eye catching sculpture. Route choice was the order of the day, with the best tactic being “make a decision and go with it”.

For the second time this series, Sally Pearson attracted the biggest field, and provided some of the hottest competition, especially in Sally Women, where Janine Steer claimed victory over Heather O’Donnell by just 7 seconds.

Event Five: Royal Park Every year the Sprint into Spring team likes to include something new and/or different into the program. Park sprinting is a different ball game to campus sprinting, and you need to adjust tactics accordingly. Royal Park is a Melbourne icon, famous as home to the Zoo. The new map featured trees – hundreds of them. Not to mention countless identical looking thickets and vegetation boundaries. Peter Collins courses were all about keeping to a line, staying confident (but not cocky), then making a snap decision about which way to hit the flag. Several longer legs broke things up. While the map looked deceptively simple, there were plenty of tales of woe.

High visibility, fast terrain and direct sight lines all lead to errors, especially the type “see flag, run to flag, wrong flag”!

The day will also be remembered for the torrential downpour just on course closure – do you want to know how many people can fit under a tent! Heartfelt thanks to the control collectors who came back looking very soggy but cheerful.

Event Six: La Trobe University, Bundoora In the time that Mikkel Kaae-Nielsen spent in Melbourne everyone got to know of his passion for multi-level sprint orienteering courses. So competitors were warned! Mikkel did a lot of work on the La Trobe map to bring it up to date, and add a new dimension of the vertical kind! Mikkel’s mapping trademark is a small colourful Sea Monster- see if you can spot it on the La Trobe map.

Before returning to Denmark he also planned the courses, leaving us with something to remember. It was certainly something different, and a great way to wrap up 2017’s Sprint into Spring. Everyone was introduced to the new skill of reading a multi-level map. The stairs were all marked with a letter at the top and bottom, but the top level was mapped separately and shown off to the left of the ground level map.

The trick was to find one end of the stair you needed, then get up or down to the right level.

Those with jerseys in the bag sat back and cruised through the sprint and hillclimb legs, opening the door for others to step up and grab 10 points. But those whose jerseys were on the line went for broke! There was lots of drama and upsets but at the end of the race all the jerseys had decisive winners – except

for the Men’s Sally Green Sprint jersey. Will Davey won the competition today with Steven O’Connell second; this resulted in both of them having equal points after the best of five was calculated. What’s more, both had exactly the same number of wins, and it was impossible to separate them – resulting in first tie in SIS jersey history!

Probably the most dominant performance of SIS was by junior speedster Ashley White. Ashley scored a maximum possible 50 points in the Yellow and Green jersey competitionss on the Usain Bolt course, and 49 points in the Polkadot competition.

Of course you can only have one jersey, and it was great to see the Green go to Thomas Caristo, and the Polkadot go to Evan Gavens – both youngsters who came along nearly every week.

Scholars A few kind words from our 2017/18 scholars

Thank you to everyone we met during our time in Melbourne and Victoria. The people we met along the way made the trip and experience something that I will never forget. To experience the chance to work in the sport which I love on the other side of the world was an incredibly daunting undertaking for me prior to touching down Down Under, but the way in which we were welcomed made everything so easy it felt like home from day one (although the snakes did take some getting used to). I will be back to Victoria sooner rather than later, and hopefully will get the chance to spend more time in a place I now consider a home from home. Thank you again!

As you know I loved my stay in Australia. I only met kind and thoughtful people through my 6 1/2 months + 1 1/2 months in Australia. I had some amazing nature and orienteering experiences both with the lovely families I stayed with and by myself. It is 8 months that I will never forget.

William Gardner Taking part in the scholars programme in Victoria was one of my best ever orienteering experiences. I really enjoyed having the opportunity to practice my coaching and event organisation, and to work with a really friendly and diverse group of people. As well as coaching in Victoria, it was also brilliant to help out at training camps with juniors from all over Australia - thank you especially to Jim Russell and Brodie Nankervis for organising these.

The ultimate highlights for me, personally, were having the time to travel and orienteer in some beautiful places around the country and the warm, friendly hospitality we received from our host families - the Dalheims and the Keys. I felt welcomed from the start as a member of the family and the local orienteering community, and this really made the experience so much better. In 2017, some individuals found a way to participate in more events than ever: Stuart McWilliam clicked over an amazing 193 events! At the other end of the spectrum, 1017 people came to just one event for the year.

It seems the traffic or other intrusions might be impinging on overall participation in Urban events with numbers down on 2016. And while fewer OY events were organised in 2017, the total numbers heading to the bush (including ‘closer’ venues) and MTBO has stayed about the same as in 2016.

So our overall participation numbers are down by about 2000 from 2016 (and the number of individuals who came orienteering in Victoria last year is around 450 fewer than in 2016).

Now we know that these numbers bounce around a bit from year to year depending on interstate/overseas visitors for major events. But the underlying numbers seem to be showing that we’re picking our target events. What is close to home? How long will it take me to get there? How can I fit that into the day/weekend? Does it look like the whole family will enjoy it when we get there?

I reckon this last question is one to focus on. Let’s support our members so they find interesting places to map (or to update the map!); set interesting courses that cater for the range of our participants; and provide a good experience for us when we turn up. Then let’s get the word out there about what a great event it was – look what you missed out on! Come to the next one …

Victorian MTBO Rolling on through 2017 WO RDS & P HOTOGRAPHS PETER C USWORT H

A busy and active 2017 has been held with great energy from a few stalwarts who have planned and organised 12 club events and the Secondary School Championships.

For our Summer 75 series, three of our four events were held at the usual popular areas of Lysterfield (BK) Woodlands (NK) and Westerfolds (YV) with the fourth event being in a new area mapped by Peter Cusworth at Mt Evelyn (BK). While the weather decided not to be kind as it was still pretty hot at 6pm, 54 sturdy riders took the challenge with Josh Street visiting all 20 controls. We had around 55 participants at each of the events with a number of new faces to MTBO trying out their navigational and riding skills. One aim of this series is for new people to move across to Vic Series events later in the year.

The Victorian MTBO Champs were set in Woowookarung (formerly Canadian Forest), Ballarat and nearby Barkstead and again held early in March so that they could be one of the selection races for the Australian MTBO team. It was a highclass event requiring good navigation in the dense network of tracks, gullies and multi-track junctions which tested the 80 or so riders that had come from around Australia to compete.

Eureka Orienteers organised and ran all three races - a big undertaking for a small MTBO club with Organisers: Blake Gordon and Mark Valentine, Course setters: Toby Cooper (Sprint), Mark Valentine (Middle) and Ken & Anitra Dowling (Long), Controllers: Jon Sutcliffe and Blake Gordon and SportIdent: Ian Chennell.

And so, the Victorian MTBO Series began in May at Anglesea with an event set by Bayside Kangaroos’ Peter Cusworth and organised by the Gavens / Leslie family team. Having spent months negotiating permits from multiple authorities,

particularly the scout camp at Eumerella, it was disappointing that courses had to be cancelled due an area containing a control, having been hired out by the Scouts to an Army Cadet unit. However, riders did enjoy the navigational challenge and single tracks that were available to them.

We trialled something different with the You Yangs event in July and combined it with a MelBush event held in the morning with the MTBO event held in the afternoon. Nillumbik was the organising club with most of the organising being carried out by Rob and Helen Edmonds. It was a great idea and saw a number of people doing both events on the day.

The Plenty River Gorge map was a new one for this Vic MTBO Series events with the map being extended to both sides of the river. The YVOC bush map was converted to MTBO

by Peta Whitford, with help and advice from Jon Sutcliffe, and Kathy Liley rode or walked every track on the map to meticulously grade each one. It certainly provided a great navigational and physical challenge to the riders who attended and completed the courses.

The 4th round of the Vic MTBO Series was held at Fingerpost Corner near Woodend organised by Bayside Kangaroos with course setter Anthony Jones. Much of the pine forest in the area had been cleared so it was strangely unfamiliar to see rolling hills rather than tall pine trees everywhere. Most of the courses were in the eucalypt forest areas and incorporated many sections of the single tracks – a good event. While the weather could have been a little better being overcast with a bit of drizzle, it was good for riding and reduced the dust. It was great to see a number of new families attend the event.

Finally, the last event was at Muckleford with the ever reliable Nillumbik Emus headed by Rob Edmonds again organising and setting the event. Held under sunny skies for once, this map was unusual as it is getting better and better for MTBO with new sections of single track being built, adding to the track network and complexity - more work for organisers though in continual updating of the map required!

How did Victorians go competing interstate and overseas?

Australian Championships held in Wingello, Southern Highlands, NSW.

While Victorian representatives were not as high as in previous years, we did achieve some excellent results. Especially Peta Whitford, Carolyn Jackson and Graeme Cadman who won Australian titles. The strong Kiwi contingent of 50 plus riders set the tone as far as comradery and participation in the events was concerned. The Sprint event was based in Wingello township and had a bit of everything from fast forest roads, tight and twisty single track, formed roads and the small maze of tracks around the local school. The Middle and Long used Highland MTB trails and the fast fire roads around pine plantations and eucalypt forests. Victoria came 2nd in the State challenge with NSW taking out the honours.

Congratulations must go to the NSW organising team, particularly Greg Bacon World Masters at Orleans in lovely, warm August.

A band of enthusiastic Aussie riders including eight from Victoria certainly showed their worth at the World Masters during the beginning of August. While there was sometimes a definite French flair to the organisation at some of the events, the maps and courses were first class. The terrain was relatively flat – a bit of a change from many events – but the extremely complex networks of trails and single tracks, certainly resulted in challenging and enjoyable riding and navigation. Good results were achieved by a number of Victorian riders.

Overall World Master’s series had Leigh Privett M70 Champion, Carolyn Jackson W60 Champion with Kathy Liley in 2nd place in W70. A great effort.

In search of ‘Quality Bush events’ WO R DS & PHOTOS NEIL BA RR

My 2017 bush orienteering season began with a discussion in 2016 over the question “Are there enough quality bush orienteering events in Victoria?”

Of course, this discussion came up with the obvious follow-up question- “What is a quality bush event?” Over my orienteering free summer months I decided that the best answer to this question was to run as many bush orienteering events as possible in 2017 and then to decide how many could be described as “Quality”. My routes would all be recorded on DOMA to help in my review. Here are the insights I gained.

Some were relevant to the question. Some were unexpected lessons.

How many bush orienteering events can one enter in a calendar year? My expectations of the year were summed up in my comments on the first DOMA post for the February Fowl and Fizz (aka The Web-breaker”) event in Bendigo.

“Despite this being a run free week, I had to give the first event of the year a try. The aim is 50 bush events this year. Took it gentle in the hope of lasting through this and the other 49.

Tracks where possible, and only running on the tracks where flat. Well almost.” The hint about having to protect my body proved prophetic. The prediction of 50 events was less accurate. The tally ended up at 60, with some quibbles about what qualifies as a “bush” event. Where did I find these events?

12 interstate (the usual championship events, the QBIII and some Canberra events) 7 overseas events (Oceania and WMOC in New Zealand) One AWOC event The year 2017 was rather exceptional in the potential for quality bush orienteering. There was an Oceania and WMOC across the Tasman. The Bendigo club over-committed itself with events. I will admit to taking on the organisation of three Bendigo events (in addition to the three I was already scheduled to organise) to ensure they were not cancelled. So I didn’t run in six of the 60 events as I was the course-setter/ organiser. (But I am still going to count these in my total). In 2018 we will not have the international events in New Zealand and the Bendigo fixture has been paired back by about six events. Despite this, it would still be possible to run in 50 bush events in Victoria this year, and that’s not counting the more park-like events on the MelBush fixture. If you add the national carnivals, it would be possible to match my 60 without leaving the country and making only a couple of interstate trips.

Why is there are perception of a declining number of quality bush events? My mind turned to this question and to answer it I pulled out copies of Orienteering Victoria from 21 years ago. A rough tally of events shows that the number of events seems to have increased, but the mix of events and the location of events has shifted.

Proximity is reshaping the fixture. For Melbourne and for Bendigo this means more events close to home. The nature of your home terrain dictates what sort of events you can run. For Melbourne this means two series that did not exist 21 years ago- MelBush and sprint events. These have replaced what

Bendigo Bush Classic 10 on Sedgwick. Ted van G set the courses on the best route choice map in the Bendigo stable of maps. The two long legs were so intriguing I went back mid-week and reran the course using different route choices. This was my course of the year.

Bendigo Night Champs. A quality hagaby event with challenging navigation and a good atmosphere. Night orienteering transforms benign terrain into exciting orienteering on the edge. were once called “club events” in more technical terrain further from Melbourne.

The centre of gravity for technical bush orienteering has shifted northwards as a result. There are a similar number of technical bush events in Victoria in 2018, but if you live in the east of Melbourne attendance means more driving.

Its an interesting question as to whether the number of available organisers per event has decreased. If we include the new series, the number of events has increased. If we go by attendance, it looks like the number of available organisers may have decreased. [and I have not tried to count the changes in street and MTBO events which may magnify this trend] Can you have too much “quality bush orienteering”?

Yes. I didn’t fit much else into my weekends during the orienteering season. The plan is to redress this omission in 2018. I also discovered that the key to a high count of events was keeping the body injury free. I wasn’t always successful, and entered at least two events with walking poles. There were a couple of events that I just had to scrub from the list to prevent further damage. Towards the end I was cutting back on training to reduce the risk of injury, and I was running very carefully in the forest. At the end of the season I was less fit than after any previous orienteering season, despite running in many more orienteering events.

How many of the Victorian events were “quality” bush events? This is a very subjective question. At a basic level, I expect interesting terrain, good mapping, well-designed courses and controls in the correct place. Some others may include the size of the field and the atmosphere of a crowd in their criteria, but these characteristics don’t matter to me. A quick review suggests at least 25 of 40 Victorian technical bush events met my criteria. With so many events to consider through the season, the details tend to become hazy. So I will finish with a short list of the events that left an impression in my mind that hasn’t dimmed.

Canberra mid-week orienteering. In a city with a significant population of retired orienteers, and lots of nearby terrain, the concept of midweek lunchtime orienteering is hard to fault.

The AWOC club championship at Beechworth Gorge. Don’t assume the bush season ends with the Australian Championship Carnival. The Victorian season finished with an unplanned double header of quality orienteering on Cup weekend. On the Saturday evening there was a Bendigo night event in the subtle terrain of Lyell Forest using the Billygoat format. The next day AWOC put on their championship in Beechworth. I was fearful the event would be brutal. Instead the courses were well planned to provide interesting route choice whilst minimizing the climb. There was a wonderful table of (free) cake after the event and a friendly atmosphere. This was my most enjoyable event of the year- well worth the drive. PS. The double header is on again this year.

Project Coordination report From the VOA Projects Coordinator WORDS KATE M ORRI S PROJECTS COORDINATOR

Sports and Recreation Victoria (SRV) Funding 2017 saw a bumper year of learning for Kate and the SRV Funding Projects! Funding parameters have been changing over the last two years, as SRV and other sports funders need to answer to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) – our friendly funding providers! DHHS looks for data to reflect outcomes, seeks to fund new self-sustaining projects and support diversity. In response to these changes, the workplan for 2018/2019 funding reflects this shift in focus Don’t be daunted! This is great news for OV and clubs wanting to review their processes and documentation, create safe sports experiences, implement new ways to invite and welcome a diverse set of people to orienteering, encourage and support young people and females to participate.

2017 Junior Transition OV had new junior memberships: 14 females, 12 males across 5 clubs. One club had 3 girls transition from schools programs (incomplete data). There is a need to collect data and record accurately to ascertain how well our programs are meeting our needs and goals. How our members joined and how to increase these numbers with new programs and support is the learning from 2017.

Marketing and Systems

The OV website enjoyed a huge upgrade from Digital Thing with the assistance of Margi Freemantle and Debbie Dodd.

With a much easier to navigate platform, more information, and clear branding we can all enjoy the new website and invite organisations, individuals and partners from the wider community to visit us online.

Coach in Residence The winter coach - Dutch orienteer Mikkel (1M) - was a welcome addition to our usual summer program - this year British orienteers Peter and Will (2M). For SRV funding the winter coach won us our funding, as technically the summer coaches were normal business (not included in funding agreement). Peter and Will were included in SRV as part of Under-represented groups training programs. The following was completed: • 3x training courses (52 participants) • 31x training sessions (161 participants) • 2x Camps (fees for x1 camp only) • 2x Mapping • 2x Course Setting

Under-Represented Groups Board Equity 2017 saw a decline in board equity to a 25:75 female-male ratio. The mandatory requirement is for a 40:60 female-male ratio. The Executive Officer and Project Coordinator

collaborated with SRV, Vicsport, and the OV Board to assist with the transition to gender equity on the board.

• Most participants (8) asked to attend again. x3 regular participants, x2 unsuitable to orienteering, x2 unsuitable to team, x7 participated 2-4 times.

• Having a Liaison Support Person enabled initial/repeat participation, a positive experience, navigation of Eventor and event rules

People with a disability 20x people with a disability participated in Orienteering events. One of the programs, was highlighted in the SRV case study, as follows:

It would be useful for accessible maps, begun by Peter and Will, to be available at events as a normal practice within clubs. Peter has provided documents on how to create accessible maps. These maps will be useful for anyone who needs a simplified, clearer (large print) map.

For existing relationships: to support continued participation in the sport. Provide information on suitable events (such as SIS, MelBushO, PAS), accessibility support, welcome and assistance to participants and carers as required at each event.

5% increase in people with a disability participating at orienteering events.

Education: Provision of skills training courses to club members 2018 will see another push towards accrediting coaches, to accommodate the requests for basic training, female coaching, junior training and camps. This will be the last year for sponsoring first aid training with SRV funding. First Aid Training will become business-as-usual – funded either through OV or clubs. More mappers, course setters, and event organisers are needed – there will be invites and support for trainers and participants to get involved. There will be support for orienteers to complete fair play and child safe Lead: Project Coordinator, Executive Officer Strategies Provide funding and support for members to gain or maintain accreditation and first aid qualifications.

Liaise with clubs to ensure first aiders are qualified and available at events.

During 2017 the main focus of my work has been to continue to administer the Sporting Schools program, to continue to service and work in the field with the ‘fee for service’ schools and to provide professional development courses for teachers in the teaching of orienteering in schools.

Working With Children Checks (WWCC) Orienteering Victoria continues to increase the number of members with current WWCC’s by the end of 2017, 147 orienteers had current WWCC’s and 17 orienteers who are Registered Teachers All orienteers are urged to apply for a Working with Children Check - these are free to volunteers – to help Orienteering Victoria ensure our sporting events comply with the Child Safe Standards.

Permanent Orienteering Courses Orienteering Victoria now offers permanent courses at 5 locations (6 courses). The arrangement for the Orienteering Service of Australia to promote and on-sell maps on behalf of Clubs is working smoothly with a very efficient service provided.

The courses are used regularly by the ‘fee for service’ schools programs, individuals, scout and community groups, plus an 45 additional schools and ‘other’ groups have registered their on-going regular use with Orienteering Victoria.

Education programs for 2017 Orienteering Victoria offers wide range of educational opportunities to primary, secondary and tertiary students.

Annually programs offered are ‘fee for service’, Sporting Schools, four Schools State Championships and Professional Development courses for teachers. Administration of this program is handled by Peta.

Orienteering Instructors include: Anne Robinson, Jon Gordon, Rob Edmonds, Dennis Mews, Karen Strachan and Emma Morris, Jon Ewels, Helen Slater and Jenny Lawford.

These educational programs continue to be offered in parkland and bushland areas with many committed schools making regular bookings. Each new year a few new schools coming on board, especially for ‘Outdoor Education and Team Building’ sessions.

Mappers include Andras Bogdanovits, Alan Davis, Greg Tamblyn, Rob Fell and Neil Barr.

Additionally, Orienteering Victoria has now accredited two ‘commercial’ providers, enabling orienteering to be delivered in areas OV is unable to service.

Kim Merkel from ‘Playball’ in Shepparton, caters for requests in central and north-central Victoria.

Three staff from ‘WildsideOutdoors’ cater for requests in the north-west of Victoria and are based in Mildura.

Flow on effect There has been a direct flow on from the ‘in school’ orienteering experiences to the Victorian Primary Schools Championships from a number of these Sporting Schools.

East Bentleigh Primary School, extended its students orienteering experiences with a day at Jells Park.

Queen of Peace Primary School, Altona, had a ½ day at Brimbank Park.

Silverton, Menzies Creek and Tucker Road Primary Schools all followed up their schools programs with successful participation at Primary Schools champs.

St Josephs PS (Boronia) and St Judes PS (Scoresby) chose to have their school maps updated and invited an OV instructor into their school for a 4 weeks program, to help revitalize the orienteering programs.

Competitive Orienteering Programs for school aged children 2017 2017 has been a very full year.

VPSOC eastern zone was able to return to Maroondah Reservoir Park, following the severe storm damage (over 120 trees were felled) in late 2016. It is a beautiful park and it was good to see how well the clean-up and revegetation program had been implemented.

His encouragement and welcoming environment ensures on-going commitment by the schools and students.

Report from Jon for 2017 competition Congratulations to Scotch College for once again dominating the competition and taking the trophy back.

Well done Trinity, who only had a dozen or so students each week, but still managed 2nd place.

The average weekly participation was 69, with a total of 274 participations over the 4 week competition.

As my time of employment with Orienteering Victoria comes to a close, I have had time to reflect on the development of the schools programs in particular.I am proud to have helped design, develop and deliver hundreds of ‘on demand’ schools programs for both primary and secondary students with the aim to provide the best orienteering experience so the students go home saying ’Orienteering is a great sport’.

Statistics can be interesting. Checking the archives I found that in my 27 years I have organized 95 State Championships for schools (primary, secondary and mountain bike) enabling 35,184 students to experience the joys of ‘navigating with success’ in the parks and bushland areas in Victoria.

VICTORIAN ORIENTEERING ASSOCIATION ABN 85 554 483 914 NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2017 Note 1: Statement of Significant Accounting Policies The financial statements are special purpose financial statements prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 VIC. The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity.

The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless stated otherwise, have been adopted in the preparation of these financial statements.

(A) Basis of Preparation Reporting Basis and Conventions The financial report has been prepared on an cash basis and does not take into account changing money values or, except where specifically stated, current valuations of non-current assets. Cost is based on the fair values of the consideration given in exchange for assets.

(B) Accounting Policies Income tax The association is exempt from income tax.

Plant and Equipment Each class of plant and equipment is carried at cost less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses.

The carrying amount of each class of plant and equipment is reviewed annually to ensure it is not in excess of the recoverable amount from those assets. The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of the expected net cash flows that will be received from the assets' employment and subsequent disposal. The expected net cash flows have not been discounted to present values in determining the recoverable amounts.

Subsequent costs are included in the asset's carrying amount recognised as a separate asset, as appropriate, only when it is probable that the future economic benefits associated with the item will flow to the association and the cost of the item can be measured reliably. All other repairs and maintenance are charged to the income statement during the financial period in which they are incurred.

Depreciation The depreciable amount of all plant & equipment including buildings and capitalised leased assets, is depreciated on a straight-line basis over their useful lives to the association commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. Leasehold improvements are depreciated over the shorter of either the unexpired period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements.

The assets residual values and useful lives are reviewed, and adjusted if appropriate, at each balance date.

An assets carrying amount is written down immediately to its recoverable amount if the asset's carrying amount is greater than its estimated recoverable amount.

Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing proceeds with the carrying amount. These gains and losses are included in the income statement. When revalued assets are sold, amounts included in the revaluation reserve relating to that asset are transferred to retained earnings.

Leases & Hire Purchases Leases of fixed assets, where substantially all the risks and benefits incidental to the ownership of the asset, but not legal ownership, are transferred to the association are classified as finance leases.

Finance leases are capitalised by recording an asset and a liability at the lower of the amount equal to the fair value of the leased property or the present value of the minimum lease payments, including any guaranteed residual values. Lease payments are allocated between the reduction of the lease liability and the lease interest expense for the period. Hire purchases are treated in the same way.

Leased assets are depreciated on a straight line basis over their estimated useful lives where it is likely that the association will obtain ownership of the asset or ownership over the term of the lease.

Lease payments under operating leases, where substantially all the risks and benefits remain with the leaser, are charged as expenses in the periods in which they are incurred.

Lease incentives under operating leases are recognised as a liability and amortised on a straight - line basis over the life of the lease term.

Impairment of Assets At each reporting date, the Board of Management reviews the carrying values of its tangible and intangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaired. If such an indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset's fair value less costs to sell and value-in-use, is compared to the asset's carrying value. Any excess of the asset's carrying value over its recoverable amount is expensed to the income statement.

Where it is not possible to estimate the recoverable amount of an individual asset, the association estimates the recoverable amount of the cash-generating unit to which the asset belongs.

Employee Benefits Provision is made for the liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees to balance date. Employee benefits that are expected to be settled within one year have been measured at the amount expected to be paid when the liability is settled, plus related on-costs. Employee entitlements payable later than one year have been measured at the present value of the estimated future cash out flows to be made for those benefits.

Cash and Cash Equivalents Cash and Cash Equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks or financial institutions, other short term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within short term borrowings in current liabilities on the balance sheet.

Revenue All items of revenue, excluding funding revenue and interest revenue is recognised in full in the income year in which it is invoiced or received, which ever is the earlier.

Funding revenue is recognised when the right to receive the funding has been established.

Interest revenue is recognised on a proportional basis taking into account the interest rates applicable to the financial assets.

All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).

Goods and Services Tax (GST) Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Tax Office. In these circumstances, the GST is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the balance sheet are shown inclusive of GST. Cash flows are presented in the cash flow statement on a gross basis, except for the GST component of investing and financing activities, which are disclosed as operating cash flows.

Comparative Figures When required by Accounting Standards comparative figures have been adjusted to conform to changes in presentation for the current financial year.

(C) Critical Accounting Estimates and Judgements The Board of Management evaluates estimates and judgments incorporated into the financial report based on historical knowledge and best available current information. Estimates assume a reasonable expectation of future events and are based on current trends and economic data, obtained both externally and within the association.

Key estimates - Impairment: The association assesses impairment at each reporting date by evaluating conditions specific to the group that may lead to impairment of assets. Where an impairment trigger exists, the recoverable amount of the asset is determined. Value-in-use calculations performed in assessing recoverable amounts incorporate a number of key estimates.

Key judgments - Doubtful debts provision: No doubtful dept provision has been made at 31 December 2017, as there are no accounts receivable as at 31 December 2017.
