WHO'S NEXT
First Light I
remember my first summer concert. It was Stevie Ray Vaughn at the Riverbend Music Theatre in Cincinnati, Ohio. While I’m pretty sure it was June, I am positive I was in over my head and didn’t near appreciate the opportunity. The Riverbend sits on a little stretch of water that I’m too lazy to Google (and, given the issues as of late with SOPA, may not actually exist anymore), and I remember thinking this was the best of all possible ways to experience music. These are the thoughts that 19-year-old concert-less freshman have. Regardless, I remember lying back on the lawn, enjoying music I was wholly unfamiliar with all around me, and thinking about the upcoming summer. While I can’t remember many specifics, it was at that point—that small minute thinking about the hot stretch in front of me—that I connected music to summer. From that point forward it was impossible to disconnect summer from the music that played around it. The Core from Clapton’s album Slowhand, the first notes of Feel Like a Stranger from the June Shoreline shows in 1989, and Bruce Hornsby’s Mandolin Rain are the ones that do it for me—immediately connect back to summer and to the pace-less glide of time that, specifically, the very beginning of summer aligns with. What music does for many, the mountains do for some. That’s sort of where we come in. It’s easy to let winter overwhelm the definition of who we are given the snow and the blow here but—especially given our recent growth initiatives—summer is where we’ve begun separating ourselves. How we separate ourselves doesn’t much matter but it’s important to note that we’re

different. And not just 50,000-square-foot-waterparkdifferent but different in a way that allows you to take a summer vacation and once parked, ignore your car for the duration. Within walking distance of that stationary car is an aerial Tram to one of the highest peaks in Vermont, an NHL-sized hockey rink, New England’s newest Indoor Waterpark with a retractable roof, an 18-hole championship golf course, miles of hiking trails, and several restaurants to help motivate you through it all. Of course, like Garcia said, “The notes that aren’t played are as important as the ones that are.” Suffice to say, Jay Peak does a pretty admirable job of either raising or calming your heart-rate. It’s your call on which you want—maybe a little of both. In this edition of our Summer magazine you’ll learn about great local food, our golf course and waterpark, a few new events and some of the people who make it all work—all of it with the songs we know, some we love and some we tolerate—as soundtrack. Hopefully you’ll get a chance to wander our way this summer and give yourself an opportunity to lay down a few new tracks yourself. Enjoy your summer. Steve Wright.

Dave Heath BUILDING A MYSTERY
D
ave Heath struggles when asked what his official title is. As the man responsible for keeping everything from the snowmaking blowing to the landscaping manicured to making sure all 385 acres of the mountain’s burly bush in order, Heath may be integral to the Jay Peak program, but his title is mysterious. “I guess I’m kind of an outdoor operations manager, but I don’t worry too much about what my job is called.” Says Heath. With 27 years of happy Jay Peak servitude under his belt, what you call his job may be irrelevant but his influence is not. He’s been instrumental in building the modern day Jay long before the first golf flag was planted. The Northern Vermont native comes from a long line of locals. Growing up as a “5th of 6th generation Vermonter” Heath found himself doing the kind of hands-on work synonymous with the Green State; sugaring, logging and farm work. “All those things prepared me for what I do up here.” Heath says. “The first year I worked at Jay we built a chairlift, and a big pond, and a bunch of other things that are long gone now. Soon after came the condos, and the rest of it has been building slowly. It didn’t go ‘bang’ and it was here…the Jay you see today has been growing all these years and I’m happy to have been a part of it.”
JAY PEAK RESORT |
An avid hockey player and a musician with a strong interest in southern rock, Heath has grown to see his passions become a part of Jay’s program. “I love having the Ice Haus there now, and I’m a fan of both the Pump House and August West.” Says Heath.
“ONE OF THE UNSEEN BENEFITS OF THESE NEW THINGS IS SEEING MY KIDS ENJOY THE SAME ACTIVITIES I DO. I’M PROUD TO BE A PART OF WHAT JAY’S BECOME.” Clearly, the man behind-the-scenes deserves some thanks but he doesn’t need it. Speaking to the unassuming Heath reveals the reason behind his passion for the pursuit; “You can’t have growth in your life sitting on the couch watching.” says Heath “You gotta get out there and do it. That’s what these mountains are for. To just let people grow.” Heath is proof that as mountains grow, so too do their fans. Mike Berard
7 | SUMMER OF 2012
Sultans of Swing DO MUSIC AND GOLF BELONG TOGETHER? IT DEPENDS ON WHO YOU TALK TO. In 2008, Fijian golf savant Vijay Singh powered his way to a dominating win in the Fedex Cup Playoffs. Winning 3 out of the 5 events, most were not surprised by Singh’s victory. What was surprising was Singh claiming to have benefited in the Playoffs by using a musical golf aid that allowed him to keep his swing fluid and powerful. The fact that he didn’t say which brand of aid it was suggests he wasn’t even being paid to say it. It raises the question; can music help your golf game? And should it? Golf is a game predicated on purity. Sure, there is no shortage of wacky golf tools being sold to improve everything from the sacred swing to the mental preparation needed to tackle a 72-hole tournament, but some might say tuning into an mp3 player on the course is taking it too far. Do major and minor notes in the headphones ruin the game? Or is it a harmless, melodic way to chip away at your handicap? One thing’s for sure—in a game played four people at a time, there’s bound to be at least three people who’ll have something to say about it. Mike Berard

Raymond Lavertu “COMME DANS UNE CARTE POSTALE”
L
« On était 256 joueurs.
In Newport Vermont, fresh comes before convenience and nutrition trumps the plastic toys in your Happy Meal. The small community on Lake Memphremagog takes a whole-hearted approach to connecting consumers, growers and makers of the region, and what that means is good, healthy, local food for the people who frequent Jay. From farm to table, this network of people and businesses brings the bounty of Northern Vermont, meaning you get the best of the Green Mountain State in your meal without even having to ask for it. WHEN IT COMES TO FRESH FARE AND SWEET TUNES, FRESH BETTIES’ OWNER BETTIE CURBOY DELIVERS THE GOODS. While you’ll often find Bettie Curboy crooning soulfully behind the microphone on local stages like the Snowshoe Lodge and Pub, most often she’ll be found behind the grill at her popular restaurant, Fresh Bettie’s, where she and her friendly staff serve up Montgomery’s best breakfast sandwich and a menu full of food built from only the freshest local ingredients. Curboy took over the restaurant back in 2008 when it was known as Montgomery Pizza and Subs, and she turned it into an overnight sensation, causing some to proclaim it “the best pizza anywhere”. She bakes wedding cakes, she sings, and she’s a non-denominational minister who officiates 25-50 weddings a year. Bettie Curboy is not only a hell of a cook, but just one example of how Montgomery’s dining scene has become as heavenly as John Prine imagined it might. Mike Berard

Whole Lotta Love (For The Game) M
ark English seems busy. “I just got slammed with three sales this morning,” he says over the sound of the phone ringing and emails pinging. At first glance, it would seem English’s job has overwhelmed him, but the Jay Peak real estate broker doesn’t get overwhelmed by things as simple as home sales. After all, that’s his specialty. When it comes to timeshares and sales, English knows exactly what he is doing. In our conversation, however, the source of his anxiety is revealed. “I haven’t had anytime to organize next week’s hockey game. It’s killing me.” Mark English is a puck nut. A preoccupation with playing sports is common for many men, but in Mark’s case the story is even more interesting because he only started playing hockey when the Ice Haus Arena opened a little more than a year ago…and he’s as hooked as a meathead enforcer on a breakaway. “On the first night, the Ice Haus had an open house and I was there,” says English. “They were looking to form a league and only had one goalie, so I said ‘I’ll give it a shot. I’ve been a goalie ever since.” English soon found himself like a fish out of water, playing with a group of competitive 20-somethings who put a big value on winning. “About six months ago, I voluntarily removed myself from that group and decided to start one focused purely on fun.” At first, only 7 or 8 players showed up. The group included Jay employees like VP of Real Estate Development Jake Webster and Rob Hodgkins of group sales. They managed to rope Newport High School coach Traci “Coach Muzzy” to teach them the fundamentals and bring them up to speed. 24 weeks of coaching sessions later, and the group was ready for a real game. At last count, 40 players made up four teams of quickly progressing hockey players, all focused on one thing—fun. Mike Berard

On a déménagé notre équipe à Jay Peak.

FOR ME, FORMIDABLE.
D
» Emilie Corriveau

n December 2011, the Hotel Jay opened its shiny new doors to the Northeast Kingdom and the world. As an updated version of the dilapidated namesake it replaces, the Hotel Jay now features a Conference Space and Executive Boardroom for your corporate getaways. Don’t worry, we won’t tell your boss you’re holding most of the meetings on the golf course. That’s your business.
As for the hotel proper, slumber in comfort in one of the 176 suites and rooms with your family. Speaking of families, we made sure to bring the all-important Family Room over from the old building. Reminiscent of the gathering space in the first Hotel Jay, this one is a little bigger, a lot better, and features more to do when the rest of the day has winded down, but your kids haven’t. Doesn’t that sound like music to your ears?

ACTIVITY RIVER
Float On LAZY RIVERS ARE LAME. BIG RIVERS ARE THE REAL DEAL.
T
he Lazy River is inaccurately named. At Jay Peak, the term is a misnomer. There is nothing lazy about this body of water. As the 700-foot river circumnavigates the whole of the Pump House Waterpark, a wave generator powers inner tubes along while floating Raised Jayers nurse nothing but sore muscles and smile-chaffed faces. Rather, they catch views of the Tram taking hikers to the peak, or kick-flipping flowriders eating H20 on the standing wave. It’s difficult to be lazy on the Big River. Kids cannonball you. Husbands flip tubes. Moms forget about things like sunscreen and towels and “keeping it down” and have a great time. No, the Lazy River is not lazy. It is a 360-degree tour through the adventurous terrain that makes the Pump House a waterpark unlike any other. So jump in, flip your sister’s tube, splash your Dad in the face and cork a rubber ball off your brother’s head. Leave the snoring and the sleepy sunburns to the gamblers.

n winter, the trees around Jay Peak are famous for the innumerable paths and trails that wind throughout their wooded trunks. These trees are the heart of Vermont skiing, and starting this Labor Day weekend, they will play host to the soul of Vermont trail running as well. The first annual Jay Peak Trail Running Festival hits the mountain September 1st and 2nd, and while running around on a mountain might not seem like the most
natural thing for most, the sport attracts a special breed of person. Festival organizer Chris Bernier says “We expect a big cross section of people, from the locals who just want to try out a 5 km race, to the crazy ones who will run the 50 km ultramarathon in their barefeet.” Wait a minute…in their bare feet? Yes, but don’t think you have to do it that way. Trail running is just like regular running except on trails exclusively. It attracts the same fitness minded folk but adds a little adventure not found on the roads and concrete pathways of the city. Those who decide to do it barefoot are just taking it one step further. The two-day festival will feature three different 5-km races; the Green Circle race is a good entry point for new runners, the Blue Square will take runners a little bit higher on the mountain, and the Black Diamond will “make your quads hate you in the end” as it is as much a hike as a race. Do all three and Bernier promises a special prize called the Triple Medallion Medal. Experienced trail runners can choose either a 25-km race or a 50-km Ultramarathon. Kids can enter their own Mini Marathon, with graduated checkpoints for different age groups. With choices like these, the festival is stepping towards a family friendly future.

“We want this to become an annual event that families and serious runners can take part in. "Jay has everything needed to support a great festival, and to keep people happy before, during and after the races. We are all looking forward to it,”says Bernier.

What are the parameters that qualify a person as Raised Jay? The question is up for debate. After all, we all come from unique backgrounds and locations. But we also come from the same mindset. Here are a few items we think might signify you're on the path to becoming Raised Jay...and a few that might signify the opposite. Are we on the same wavelength?

THIS ONE’S FOR THE FAMILIES. (No, seriously. We mean it.) In an election year, the talking heads all claim to care for the families, but we know it’s all about getting your vote. Not here at Jay. We know the real value lies in families not because they have a vote, but because families have fun. And fun is what keeps Jay fresh. When you stack up all the new family-friendly additions at Jay the potential for fun multiplies quickly. From the brand new Pump House Indoor Water Park to the 18-hole Championship Jay Peak Golf Course, Jay’s got a little something-something for both the children and the parents…because why should the kids have all the fun? Add in the Ice Haus Arena, the new Hotel Jay, and Vermont’s only aerial tram (which happens to visit Vermont’s most awesome peak), and things just got pretty darn fun around here. It’s the perfect family vacation, even if you’re family is less-than-perfect…just sayin’.

WHETHER IN MUSIC OR MOUNTAINS, TAKE A CUE FROM AND OLD SONG AND LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE WITH.
W
hat will the future bring? In the age we live in, this is the question so often sold to us through the marketing of products, services and the evermarching push of progress. Nowhere is it more evident than in the art of music snobbery. From the pixilated opinions of high-brow music blogs like Pitchfork.com to the classic— some would say dinosaur-like—print magazines such as Rolling Stone, the barrage of new music being hailed as The Next Big Thing is hurled upon us daily. And while one title does everything in its power to ignore any music in the mainstream, and the other is blind to anything not supported by a major label and a world tour, almost every title—online or otherwise—forgets the most important thing: the best music is the music that is playing. It’s the same in the outdoor lifestyle game. We agonize over which new mountain bike helmet will look best, what the next hot resort is, which golf clubs will give us the most distance, who has the most vertical, and which snowboard will match our Pro Model gloves. What we forget is that the purpose of
being in the mountains is to forget this omnipresent concern with what is fashionable or cool or progressive. As the old bumper sticker wisdom goes “A bad day golfing is better than the best day at work.” Simply by being in the mountains, we can forget the pressures beyond them. The whole point is in being there. Music (or mountains) as fashion is a curse on two of the most beautiful gifts we have as humanity. All the questions about ‘what is cool’ or ‘what’s next’ only pollute the true nature of these things we love. How does the music make you feel? How does the fresh air smell? There are more riches on the running trail you’re on right now than there are in a million new paths that will come later. Find way to love where you are—right now—and don’t be afraid to put on that same old worn Fleetwood Mac album. There’ll be new music every day of your life. Enjoy the soundtrack that is playing in your life… right this moment. Mike Berard
