Designing a Modern School Chair.
Nick Pearson - DesignerOff the back of the success of the Pop chair
Nick set out to design a contemporary shell based chair to suit the requirements of 21st century school environments. Combining extensive research into the history of educational seating with innovations in production techniques and contemporary materials.

The Polyprop chair designed by Robin Day in 1962 was the first injection molded chair to enter the education market, replacing the
classic wooden school chairs that dominated before. This groundbreaking design offered a product with greatly improved comfort, durability and aesthetic qualities along with a more palatable price point. Over the years competition in the market has focused on producing cheaper iterations of the original design, whilst the latest scientific research recommends more improved ways of sitting for a better posture, all suggesting there was a gap in the market for a more suitable product.
The Lotus chair has been designed to promote ‘active, dynamic seating’ this provides support and encourages movement in all directions. The thin waisted backrest structure allows the user 360 degree movement, whilst when sitting straight the seat shape offers good postural alignment whereby the pelvis is tilted in a more forward sitting position improving blood circulation and overall concentration.
We believe these developments in ergonomics twinned with a sleek contemporary aesthetic has provided the education industry with a chair fit for the 21st century working environments.

Lotus is now made from over 50% recycled polypropylene.
Giles Pearson - Design DirectorWe recognise the importance of moving to more sustainable methods of manufacture and procurement. That’s why we’ve recently increased the use of recycled PP in our poly chairs; a step which is part of our ambition to build an ever more sustainable furniture company and become part of the circular economy.
use prime glass to reinforce the chair. The new compound material has been optimised to maintain the same aesthetic appeal and durable qualities, but now shipped with a more environmentally friendly footprint.
Lotus has been designed to withstand stringent education and contract testing standards. However if a part does need replacing, Lotus has been designed to disassemble into its constituent parts, so they can be easily replaced and ultimately recycled.
50% of the polymer used in all Origin’s chairs is now made from recycled content and to bring the same rigid and durable product we originfurniture.com

“It’s always been our ambition to make chairs from recycled materials. The challenge has been to ensure we can ship the same standard of product without busting the budget. After years of persistence and (many!) a failed trial, I’m happy we’ve not only got a winning formula but can ship for the same price.

I know it sounds cliché but we want sustainability to be part of our journey and not the destination. We want to continue testing new materials and technologies as they become available to help close more
loops and increase our ranges environmental performance. As current technologies make our previous ambitions a reality, so to we hope future advancements in tech will allow us to continue on the path of creating a more sustainable company, industry and ultimately planet.”
