Product: Pop Chair. Colour: Sky Blue.
The Pop Chair is a bold and contemporary one piece Air Molded chair, designed for hospitality, workplace and educational environments. Equally at home inside and out Pop is available in 10 vibrant colours with a UV resistant finish. Pop is strong, lightweight and durable and is now made from 50% recycled polypropylene.
Nick Pearson along with his father Terry developed and commercialised a revolutionary manufacturing technique used to mould thick section plastic products named gas assisted moulding. Together they developed a business selling this equipment to brands around the world, providing them the ability
to manufacture their products to a higher quality and with reduced mouldng cycle times. Upon sale of the business Nick decided to employ the technology in a product he had long desired to produce: a mass-produced monobloc plastic chair.
Nick combined this knowledge of gas assisted moulding with an experienced industrial design team to develop a stackable chair with a strong yet familiar aesthetic atan affordable price point. The air moulding process creates hollow sections within the legs – reducing the amount of material used to create a strong and super-lightweight product that weighs just 3.4 kilos. Using less plastic offers benefits from both a financial and environmental perspective.
The democratically designed Pop Chair has proved to be a great success over the years which is a testament to the wide variety of projects it has been selected for, from hospitals (NHS), supermarkets (ASDA), schools (RSA ACADEMY), universities (UCL) and galleries (TATE) as well internationally from Uganda to California the Pop chair could be considered as somewhat of contemporary design classic.
We recognise the importance of moving to more sustainable methods of manufacture and procurement. That’s why we’ve recently increased the use of recycled PP in our poly chairs; a step which is part of our ambition to build an ever more sustainable furniture company and become part of the circular economy.
use prime glass to reinforce the chair. The new compound material has been optimised to maintain the same aesthetic appeal and durable qualities, but now shipped with a more environmentally friendly footprint.
Combined with Origin’s use of gas assisted moulding – reducing cycle time and material usage to just 3.4kg per unit – our new recycled PP formula gives the next generation Pop chair a brighter, more sustainable future.
50% of the polymer used in all Origin’s chairs is now made from recycled content and to bring the same rigid and durable product we originfurniture.com
“It’s always been our ambition to make chairs from recycled materials. The challenge has been to ensure we can ship the same standard of product without busting the budget. After years of persistence and (many!) a failed trial, I’m happy we’ve not only got a winning formula but can ship for the same price.
I know it sounds cliché but we want sustainability to be part of our journey and not the destination. We want to continue testing new materials and technologies as they become available to help close more
loops and increase our ranges environmental performance. As current technologies make our previous ambitions a reality, so to we hope future advancements in tech will allow us to continue on the path of creating a more sustainable company, industry and ultimately planet.”
