The Ratio Collection Origin
Ratio
The Ratio collection is the result of an exercise in reductionism, to achieve the most form and comfort from the least design. The chairs and stools have a small footprint and light aesthetic, making best use of small spaces. The frame creates a minimal silhouette inspired by that of classic bentwood cafe chairs. With Ratio a more contemporary shape has been developed to suit modern domestic and commercial environments such as cafés, restaurants, gardens and dining areas.

Designer
The brief was to simplify both the manufacturing process and the aesthetic of an outdoor seating range. With the aim to design something that would compliment our existing steel product collections and provide a more cost-effective option.
At the heart of the design is a circular, concave form punched from a single sheet of steel, a manufacturing process crucial to the structural integrity of the design. The wall section around the seat adds great strength to the frame and is key to the products visual lightness.
Ratio aims to reduce an outdoor steel chair to its most fundamental parts, making each curve and every bend accountable.

Ratio’s simplicity is rooted in a monolinear approach, the thickness of the seat matching that of the tube, making all vertical and horizontal forms the same visual weight. Appearing as though an illustration of a chair drawn with simple stokes of a marker pen.
Ratio is the continuation of a journey in the reduction of design in furniture. Taking away all non-essential parts of a chair, whilst maintaining the most amount of comfort and aesthetic value. This exercise forces you to be economical with forms, concentrating the mind on only the essential aspects of a product.
The result is a sculptural product with the least amount of ‘design’ we have ever included in a chair. Most of the backrest is just air, which really opens up the space around it. To me the design is reminiscent of Japanese lettering, expressing the same curvature and elegance. I think if I saw Ratio in a Sushi bar in Soho for instance, I would have achieved what I set out with the design.

Circular Steel Design
In fact it is the most recycled material in the world, and whilst it may not be a new material it can be re-imagined into new forms, suitable for modern life. This is why we are building a diverse portfolio of steel based products, which are both made from recycled material and are designed to be easily recycled.
Origin’s steel products are made from a combination 56% recycled and 44% virgin material. This is thought to be the most sustainable ratio, as demand for steel outstrips the amount that is recycled. Buying steel on the basis of high recycled content does not stimulate further recycling but instead increases the cost.

Steel is a great material, it is strong, inexpensive and endlessly recyclable.
Steel has many great characteristics, although it’s best I feel is that it can be repeatedly recycled without any impact on the quality of the material. I like the idea that the steel in our chairs has metamorphosised over the years serving a variety of different functions. A chair now but may have been a car panel, structural beam or hand rail, this to me is circular design.
Product longevity is also extremely important to sustainability, designing products to last not only physically but from an aesthetical stand point, rather than following any fashion trends. I believe it’s important to focus on material, structural and functional qualities when designing a product and to allow an aesthetic to emerge organically.
