THE NEW ‘ATENEU SANTBOIÀ’ Type: Status: Size: Location:
Cultural Center – Public Space Master-thesis project – 2013 73,200 sf /6,800 m² Sant Boi del Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain
Description: The project is located in the old Ateneu Santboià’s area, which had been an important social and cultural spot for the city. Today it is in ruins and the city council wants to raise a new facility embodying the spirit that the old Ateneu had. The proposal seeks to preserve the upper wooden space, seven meters above than the city center level, and creates a public connection through our own building. As a landform building integrated into topography, a large staggered space passes through it. This introverted space is embraced by the building but open to the upper level and its old mediterranian pines, and because of its wide proportions and slope, it can be used as an outdoor theater. At this staggered agora all public entrances to the three different levels of the complex converge. The building is defined by two main volumes: the Theatre (600 seats) and the Multipurpose Room. Both rooms are placed on either side of the main node, while the rest of the program is located in a third body that connects the different floors and links all three bodies. That long body is the main facade of the complex which faces the city center and presides over the new square. This body acts as an access gateway, permeable at the ground floor to create two separate entrances to the building. The Theater can function separately from the rest of the building, which is convinient with those big complexes. The same independence function is displayed at the second floor access, where are located all the rehearsal and creation rooms. The whole complex is covered under a single continuous roof made of zinc, which its slope form adapts the inner program and the heights of the neighboring buildings. This proposal allows to compact the built body, extending the area of open public space. This project has been selected as one of twelve proposals included in the City Hall’s publication for the future of ‘Ateneu Santboià’. 12 propostes: Equipaments culturals a l’Ateneu Santboià [ ISBN: 9788461488070]

CLUSTER & BUSINESS INCUBATION CENTER Type: Status: Size: Location:
Office building – Refurbishment Academic project – 2011 30,700 sf /2.850 m² 22@ district of Barcelona, Spain
Description: The 22@ district development plan envisages a new model of compact city, where the most innovative companies coexist with research, training and technology transfers, as well as housing, facilities and green areas. The aim is to encourage landowners to renew obsolete old urbanism industry of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, while maintaining economic activity. This model coexists with the industrial heritage form of the neighborhood through the adoption of the Industrial Heritage Protection Plan, which retained 114 architectural elements of interest. The old smithing workshop is one of the industrial buildings that incorporates the plan and must be preserved. The proposal of a business incubation center concerns a new office block linked to the upper floor of the smithing factory, which wants to keep their activity. The cluster project has been thought by modulating privacy and sociability levels, work and leisure gradients, and formality and informality ranges that are seek in this kind of centers. The functional program is based on a rational structure made of perimetral units of 35m² (7,75m x 4,6m) corresponding to the structure of old factory. These units contains enclosed spaces (including meeting rooms, printer rooms, services and facilities) and the rest of the plan is a vast space with co-working workstations as open office that faces to the courtyard. The vast central area of the old smithing plan is provided of a irregular set of circular skylights to bring in enough natural light. The ground floor is conceived as a part of the city by public use: bar, classrooms and conference rooms. The facade of the new block wants to make visible the unit shape through a gap and the different treatment of vertical slats, that provides a contrast with the plain and horizontal brutalist style of the smithing factory.

The new museum wing contains an auditorium and several showrooms linked to each other by an upward ramping until reaching the bridge that connects to the first floor of the monastery. Inside the cloister the tour’s course is downwards, ending with the great romanesque capitals and leaving the museum through its shop.
