TOMB OF THE EAGLES This visitor centre offers a unique view of Mesolithic, Stone Age and Bronze Age Orkney. Located on a cliff edge at Isbister, at the southernmost tip of South Ronaldsay, the Tomb of the Eagles is one of Orkney’s top archaeological sites.
ANCIENT ORKNEY OUR LIVING HISTORY
With the UNESCO World Heritage Site - The Heart of Neolithic Orkney at its centre, Orkney allows you a close-up glimpse to a time when the islands were a thriving cultural and religious focal point. Its Neolithic houses, tombs and standing stones are some of the best preserved in Europe, and with so much active archaeology, every year brings fresh new insights. Regardless of whether you have a good knowledge of Neolithic history, a visit to Orkney will almost certainly awaken an interest in the lives and culture of the people who inhabited these islands thousands of years ago. On the west coast of the Mainland, Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar, the Standing
Stones of Stenness and Maeshowe make up the World Heritage Site, the Heart of Neolithic Orkney. These are the jewels in the crown, but the Orcadian landscape is dotted with archaeological sites, settlements and monuments that together tell a story of the lives of the people who first settled in

Orkney, cultivating the land and enjoying the fruits of the sea. Skara Brae, considered to be the best preserved Neolithic village in Northern Europe lies nestled into the landscape on the breathtakingly beautiful Bay of Skaill. The village lay completely hidden under layers of sand for over 4,000 years.
Standing stones are a feature of the Orcadian landscape, with The Ring of Brodgar dominating the West Mainland. This iconic ring, standing as it does in a natural amphitheatre, is thought to have been a place of ritual and ceremony. Built between 2,500 and 2,000 BC, the huge circle today has 27 stones remaining, and the sheer scale and beauty cannot fail to take your breath away. Thought to be the world’s earliest standing stone circle, the Standing Stones of Stenness was probably in use as a ceremonial site around 3,100 BC. Smaller than its Brodgar neighbour, with only three of the 12 huge stones
originally making up the circle, still standing. The tomb of Maeshowe, standing towards the end of the Brodgar peninsula is the finest Neolithic burial chamber in Northern Europe. Constructed almost 5,000 years ago, this vast structure is aligned so that the setting sun illuminates the interior chamber around the winter solstice. We can only wonder at this powerful symbolism and the beliefs that drove its creation. The Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site represents
only a fraction of the vast array of prehistoric sites from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age that can be found across Orkney. From the Neolithic farmstead, the Knap of Howar on the island of Papa Westray, built about 3,500 BC, to the Stone of Setter, Orkney’s most iconic standing stone, on Eday and the Iron Age settlement, the Broch of Burrian, on North Ronaldsay, each corner of Orkney offers a glimpse into its rich heritage and into the lives of the people who made it their home, up to five thousand years ago.
MEET A LOCAL EXPERT Julie Gibson, County archaeologist “Remains of the ancient past are everywhere in Orkney. Over 1,000 years ago Viking settlers left behind their longhouses on the Brough of Birsay, and later built St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall. 2,000 years ago, the great Iron Age brochs, Gurness and Midhowe were erected. The World Heritage sites are 5,000 years old and history is still being made at the Ness of Brodgar excavations each summer.”

WARTIME ORKNEY
REMINDERS OF HARDSHIP AND HEROISM Orkney’s landscape and seascape are today dotted with reminders of the crucial role the islands played in both World Wars, when Orkney’s population swelled by up to three times, as its strategic location made it of vital significance. Scapa Flow, one of the finest natural anchorages in the world, was home to the British Home Fleet throughout the First and Second World Wars. It witnessed the loss of many lives, including 834 with the sinking of HMS Royal Oak when the British battleship was torpedoed by a German submarine in 1939.
Today, a tour of the Ness Battery - just outside Stromness - shows its significance in defending Scapa Flow, and what life was like for its gun operators. Orkney’s most visited wartime landmark, the Italian Chapel, was created on the island of Lamb Holm by Italian prisoners of war, brought to Orkney to

work on the construction of the Churchill Barriers in 1942. The Italians created the now world famous place of worship from two Nissen huts, joined together. Led by Domenico Chiocchetti, the chapel is a truly remarkable achievement, lovingly crafted from the most basic of materials.
WARTIME ORKNEY A RICH HISTORY
The Kitchener Memorial stands austere against the skyline at Marwick Head on the West Mainland. Erected in 1926, it commemorates the sinking of HMS Hampshire in 1916 with the loss of more than 650 lives, including the then Minister of War, Lord Kitchener. Orkney’s airspace was of equal significance to its waters in the Second World War when four military airfields were in operation. Today HMS Tern, with its distinctive control tower is open to visitors thanks to the work of the Birsay Heritage Trust.
MEET A LOCAL EXPERT Christine Muir, Italian Chapel visitor attraction “With so many well-preserved wartime landmarks across Orkney, visitors can get a real feel for what life was like for Orcadians, service men and women, and of course the prisoners of war. From the awe-inspiring Ness Battery to the breathtakingly beautiful Italian Chapel - powerful reminders of the vital role that Orkney played at that time.”

THE ISLANDS
WAITING TO BE EXPLORED Why not discover more of Orkney? With around 70 islands, 16 of which are inhabited today, island hopping is a great way to experience the many different landscapes and communities that make up this wonderful archipelago. Away from the Mainland, the islands offer a rich variety of landscapes and seascapes, creating wonderful wildlife habitats, with each season offering a plethora of opportunities to enjoy native and visiting species. THE MAINLAND AND LINKED SOUTH ISLES The Mainland is the starting point for many Orkney adventures. The 12th Century St Magnus Cathedral and The Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site are “must-sees”.
A drive across the Churchill Barriers brings you to the Italian Chapel and the Neolithic Tomb of The Eagles, perched on the cliffs of South Ronaldsay. HOY, GRAEMSAY & FLOTTA Orkney’s second largest island, Hoy, is perhaps most famous for its red sandstone sea stack The Old Man of Hoy, but it also boasts the stunning Rackwick beach. The green isle of Graemsay is almost traffic free, with only 30 residents. Flotta, lying as it does at the gateway to Scapa Flow, played
a significant part in both World Wars, and many military enthusiasts visit its historic sites. SHAPINSAY Just a 25 minute ferry crossing from Kirkwall, this green and fertile island is home to the RSPB reserve of Mill Dam - a must for those seeking to catch a glimpse of rare species, including the hen harrier. Balfour Castle and village with its many beautiful views, can be found in Shapinsay. It’s a lovely island to stroll or cycle around.

EDAY The heart of the North Isles, Eday is just eight miles long. Its Heritage Walk encompasses prehistoric sites including the Vinquoy chambered tomb and The Stone of Setter - probably the finest stone of its type in Orkney.
The world’s shortest scheduled flight will take you to Papa Westray, where the Knap of Howar, North West Europe’s oldest standing house, was inhabited around 6,000 years ago. SANDAY With stunning white sandy beaches, an abundance of wildlife and archaeological sites, Sanday is the largest of Orkney’s North Isles. Visitors can enjoy the challenge of Sanday’s nine hole golf course as well as its swimming pool and fitness centre.
STRONSAY With its highest point at just 47 metres above sea level, it’s easy to get around Stronsay on foot or bike. Thousands of Grey seal pups can be seen throughout October and November. The island’s east coast is home to the dramatic Vat of Kirbister, Orkney’s most stunning natural sea arch and the cliff coast is ideal for spotting puffins and other sea-birds. NORTH RONALDSAY The most northerly of Orkney’s Outer Isles, many old traditions still prevail here. North Ronaldsay supports a rich and diverse population of wildflowers, mammals and birds including the island’s hardy breed of sheep that feed on the coastal seaweed, giving their meat a distinctive, gamey flavour.

ROUSAY, EGILSAY & WYRE Even by Orkney standards, these three islands have an abundance of ancient remains. Rousay, ‘The Egypt of the North’, contains some of the best preserved ancient monuments in Northern Europe. Egilsay, where St Magnus was martyred, was an important destination for pilgrims, and today St Magnus Kirk is a rare example of the round towered churches built by the Vikings. The Viking stronghold, known as “Cubbie Roo’s Castle”on Wyre, built in 1145 by the great Kolbein Hruga, is a reminder of Orkney’s turbulent Viking past.

Orkney’s 600 miles of coastline, rich habitats and climate make it home to a multitude of wildlife, tempting visitors who want to catch a glimpse of native species, or those passing through on their incredible migratory journeys. Orkney’s wildlife calendar is filled all year round, from the early days of spring as vast colonies of seabirds start to congregate on the sea cliffs to nest and those that have wintered in Orkney’s temperate climes prepare to return north to the Arctic. Inland, spring brings frolicking lambs and boxing brown hares. Through the longer days of summer, seabirds including puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes and razorbills nurture their young while perched on the sea cliffs. Wetlands team with native wildflowers and wading birds, and the ancient moorlands are the natural habitat of short-eared owls, hen harriers and red-throated divers. Out to sea, dolphins, minke whales, orcas and even

basking sharks can sometimes be spotted, whilst Common seal pups are in evidence on coastal rocks and shallower waters. The very rare Scottish primrose (Primula scotica), can be found flowering on maritime heathland on Papa Westray, Westray, the Mainland and Hoy in May and July. Autumn in Orkney sees the arrival of thousands of migrating birds, from Barnacle geese and Whooper swans to Slavonian grebes. Out to sea, whales, porpoises and dolphins pass by en route to warmer waters, and with 15% of the world’s Grey seal pups born in Orkney, the pupping beaches are alive with activity. As days draw short, our night skies can be filled with dazzling displays of colour - the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. The temperate climate means that wetlands and moorlands remain home to many species of birds, with the hen harrier forming communal roosts at favourite sites on the Mainland.

Orkney has been farmed for thousands of years, and today its agricultural shows are important events in the summer calendar, attracting locals and visitors alike. Orkney’s beef, lamb and dairy produce is of such quality that they have achieved protected name status, under European law. Agricultural shows are important dates in the community calendar, with fierce competition for prizes. The shows are also great spectacles and offer visitors the chance to sample local produce while enjoying
exhibits of arts and crafts, dog trials, show jumping and other attractions. Shows are held in Sanday, the East Mainland, Shapinsay, South Ronaldsay and Burray and Dounby, with competition culminating at the Orkney County Show, held in Kirkwall, the highlight of the farming calendar, attracting thousands of visitors every August.

A FOOD LOVER’S PARADISE With its lush, fertile land and rich waters, Orkney’s artisan producers create a wonderful larder to enhance your stay. With its farming heritage and rich, abundant seas, Orkney offers an array of the very best quality, locally sourced food and drink. From succulent Scottish beef raised on the lush Orkney grassland and North Ronaldsay lamb - famous for its flavour derived from its diet of seaweed, found on
the shores of the island, to the very freshest of seafood, sustainably caught in the clear blue Orkney waters, and brought to shore using traditional methods, Orkney’s larder is second to none. Orkney has its own quality mark - a Taste Of Orkney. Traditional bakeries use beremeal, flour ground from
bere, a type of barley that has been grown in Orkney since 1,500 BC to create delicious bread, oatcakes and shortbread. Generations of Orcadians have been raised on ‘bere bannocks’. Orkney’s only working water mill, Barony Mill mills bere through the winter months and is open to visitors throughout the summer.

Distilling has been a part of Orkney life for generations and today the islands boast both whisky and gin distilleries. Highland Park is the older of the two whisky distilleries, beginning life as an illegal still in the 1790s on a hill outside Kirkwall. In 1885 the Scapa Distillery was established and today both produce whiskies of worldwide renown.
A more recent addition to Orkney are gin distilleries Deerness Distillery Ltd and Orkney Distilling Ltd. They offer an Orcadian twist to their gins, using locally sourced botanicals. The award winning Orkney cheddar is a favourite of chefs and cheese lovers alike due to its unique flavour and texture and Orkney ice cream also derives its rich creamy flavour
from the lush grasslands on which Orkney’s dairy herds graze through the long summer months. Local produce is available from many of the islands independent shops, where staff will be happy to advise and perhaps offer you a taste before you buy. Look out for local produce in restaurants and cafes to get a real taste of Orkney.

CREATIVE ORKNEY
TRADITIONAL SKILLS AND CONTEMPORARY TECHNIQUES Creative people and craft producers have long found inspiration in Orkney’s distinctive land and seascapes. Today the islands are a thriving centre of creativity with native Orcadians and more recent arrivals using a blend of traditional and new skills to create a wonderful variety of items including jewellery, furniture, paintings, pottery and textiles. Orkney is home to some of the most talented of Scottish designers and craftspeople. From its traditional roots amongst crofters, arts and crafts is a flourishing industry
and has evolved to become an important part of the Orkney experience. From handmade jewellery - often made with precious stones and enamels that
reflect the wonderful Orkney hues - to beautifully textured knitwear, pottery and textiles, traditional and contemporary paintings, and handcrafted furniture that

One of the best ways to enjoy Orkney’s rich arts and crafts offer, and to meet many of the people who take their inspiration from the unique landscapes and seascapes, is to follow the Creative Trail. This trail leads you to craft workshops where you can talk to the makers, and understand their inspirations and how their products are made - many using traditional techniques. Look out for the brown roadside signs across the islands, or download the latest brochure from creative-orkney.com
The Pier Arts Centre in the centre of Stromness houses an impressive collection of British fine art which was donated by philanthropist Margaret Gardiner, including works by Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Peter Lanyon and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. In addition there are works by Orcadian artists and a year
round programme of visiting exhibitions and events. The iconic building won the Andrew Doolan Award for the Best Building in Scotland 2007. Many of the islands’ independent shops and galleries also feature locally made arts and crafts, including some that have become world renowned brands.
MEET A LOCAL EXPERT Isla Holloway, Visitor Services & Communication Officer, The Pier Arts Centre, Stromness “There is a thriving artistic community in our islands and it’s not difficult to see why Orkney is an inspiration for artists, makers and writers. As well as those living in Orkney, many artists travel to Orkney for a creative holiday. If you prefer to look at the art rather than to make it, between the myriad of local artists, craftspeople and makers, and the museums and art galleries throughout the county, there is something here to suit everyone’s artistic tastes.”

SHORTER DAYS, LONGER NIGHTS
AMAZING EXPERIENCES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR Each season brings new delights to Orkney - whenever you choose to visit, you’ll find a warm welcome awaits. SHARE THE LIGHT #visitorkney #loveorkney
46 ORKNEY.COM
Mild days mix with chillier ones, so be prepared with suitable clothing to enjoy the outdoors whatever the weather. It’s a great time to see rare birds and even migrating whales and porpoise. October is the time to spot adorable Grey seal pups, particularly at the Brough of Birsay and the islands of South Ronaldsay, Rousay and the outer isles.
Orkney’s vast skies are incredible at any time of the year, but now spectacular sunsets offer a breathtaking end to the day. On particularly clear nights, Orkney is one of the best places in the UK to see the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. This amazing spectacle is caused by charged particles accelerated into the Earth’s upper atmosphere along magnetic field lines. Those lucky enough to visit in mid-winter can see how Orkney’s Neolithic inhabitants built the vast burial tomb of Maeshowe so that during the shortest days of winter, around the winter solstice, shafts of light from the setting sun descend a narrow entrance passage,
illuminating the main chamber - a truly remarkable feat of engineering. Enjoying the festive period in Orkney is a delight. Christmas and New Year celebrations include the Ba’, a mass street ball game held in Kirkwall, attracting a huge and noisy crowd. As winter gives way to the first signs of spring, the Orkney year starts over again, bringing new life to the fields, skies, seas and moorlands.

SHORTER DAYS, LONGER NIGHTS
If you’re looking to get away from it all, Orkney has lots to offer, regardless of the season. As summer turns to autumn, Orkney’s colour palette changes along with its pace of life. Autumn brings a quieter time, with fewer visitors, but just as much to enjoy, so take your time and soak up the season.
FESTIVAL ISLANDS
YEAR-ROUND CELEBRATIONS Orkney’s festival scene brings colour and excitement throughout the year. From long summer days of fun, to autumn’s eagerly anticipated story-telling, the islands’ festivals bring communities and visitors together to enjoy local, national and international talent.
48 ORKNEY.COM
Held in May, the Orkney Folk Festival attracts a world-class line-up of artists, and visitors travel from far and wide to venues throughout Orkney. Also in May, the Orkney Nature Festival attracts wildlife enthusiasts to take part in a variety of events including snorkelling, photography and spectacular wildlife cruises.
2019 also sees the return of Orkney’s popular Garden Festival, with gardens throughout the islands open to the public. Perhaps Orkney’s most unusual festival is the North Ronaldsay Sheep Festival. Launched in 2016, volunteers from across the globe come to the island to help with the annual task of maintaining and rebuilding the dykes that keep the sheep on the shore. The St Magnus International Festival, held in June, attracts orchestras, musicians, theatre and dance companies and writers from around the world, as the festival draws audiences to venues across the islands.
FOR FESTIVAL DATES & PROGRAMMES
Stromness Shopping Week, one of Orkney’s longest established events, takes place in July. The week sees a programme of activities and celebrations enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. In September, the week-long Orkney International Science Festival draws visitors and presenters from across the world. September also sees music lovers arriving for Orkney’s Rock and Blues festivals, closely followed by the Storytelling Festival in October.
FESTIVAL ISLANDS
Festivals have long been a feature of Orkney life and today those traditions remain strong, with celebrations throughout the year. A key part of Orkney’s rich culture, festivals and celebrations offer visitors and Orcadians alike an opportunity to come together to enjoy the very best of island life.
In the winter months celebrations continue, with ‘The Ba’ - filling Kirkwall’s streets on both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Accounts of this mass ball game begin in the 1800s, though it is believed the tradition is much older.
