Your journey to Orkney is all part of your adventure. Just 6 miles (10 kilometres) north of the coast of Caithness - there is a great choice of transport links. Breathe the freshest sea air and spot dolphins and seabirds from the ferry deck, or arrive by plane and watch the isles emerging from the crystal waters beneath you.

GETTING TO ORKNEY
With four ferry routes to choose from, and up to 12 sailings a day, there are plenty of opportunities to sail away to Orkney. Whether you’re bringing a car or travelling as a foot passenger, the crossing will give you the chance to spot dolphins, seals and of course a rich variety of seabirds. You’ll find it hard not to be inspired by the impressive sea cliffs. If you’re sailing into Stromness from Scrabster, near Thurso, look out for the Old Man of Hoy -
a stunning sandstone sea stack, rising up 449 feet (137 metres). Ferries also sail regularly from Gills Bay, near John O’Groats and Aberdeen. Arriving by plane gives you a bird’s eye perspective as the islands materialise, rising up from the rich blue sea. Several flights arrive daily direct from, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Inverness. From the airport it’s just a 10 minute taxi journey into Kirkwall.

ST MAGNUS CATHEDRAL (2) Dominating Kirkwall’s skyline, St Magnus Cathedral is Britain’s most northerly cathedral. Construction began on this fine example of Romanesque architecture in 1137, and took over 300 years to complete.

These stunning examples of architecture offer a fascinating insight into our early modern heritage. BROCH OF GURNESS Located on the north west coast of the Mainland, Scotland’s best preserved broch offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of Orkney’s Iron Age dwellers.

ITALIAN CHAPEL (3) This world famous landmark on the island of Lamb Holm was built by Italian prisoners of war out of two Nissen huts using their craftsmanship, creativity and the most basic of materials. THE PIER ARTS CENTRE, STROMNESS (4) The Pier Arts Centre houses an impressive collection of British fine art, works by island artists and visiting exhibitions. Situated in Stromness, Orkney’s second largest town is a thriving cultural community with the arts centre at its heart.
BROUGH OF BIRSAY (5) This uninhabited tidal island just off the north west coast of the Mainland is one of the best places in Orkney to see puffins and seals. Visitors can walk across at low tide, and explore the Norse settlement adjacent to the causeway.
HACKNESS MARTELLO TOWER AND BATTERY These mighty coastal defences were built on Hoy, to protect merchant shipping interests during the Napoleonic Wars. These rare and well-preserved military remains never saw action. MARWICK HEAD & THE KITCHENER MEMORIAL The cliffs of Marwick Head on the West Mainland offer some of the most breathtaking views in Orkney. This RSPB reserve is the largest seabird colony in Orkney, where up to 25,000 seabirds breed in just a one mile stretch of sandstone cliffs.
KNAP OF HOWAR On the beautiful island of Papa Westray, one of Orkney’s smallest islands, is the oldest standing house in North West Europe, with the first residents probably dating back 6,000 years.
MIDHOWE CAIRN Dating back over 5,000 years, this large stalled cairn is located on Rousay’s south west shoreline, adjacent to Midhowe Broch it has been preserved with a huge stone structure. THE BEACHES OF SANDAY (7) Sanday is the third largest of Orkney’s islands. Best known for its Neolithic history, stunning white sandy bays, rolling dunes and turquoise seas.
NOLTLAND CASTLE (6) Noltland Castle on Westray was built in the 16th century by Gilbert Balfour, a supporter of Mary Queen of Scots. VAT OF KIRBISTER This sea arch on Stronsay is the most spectacular in Orkney. Formed by the collapse of the roof of a large sea cave, the arch is around 35 feet across.

TOMB OF THE EAGLES This visitor centre offers a unique view of Mesolithic, Stone Age and Bronze Age Orkney. Located on a cliff edge at Isbister, at the southernmost tip of South Ronaldsay, the Tomb of the Eagles is one of Orkney’s top archaeological sites.

Orkney offers you a glimpse into the lives of its past inhabitants, with some of the best-preserved Neolithic houses, tombs and standing stone circles in Europe. The UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Heart of Neolithic Orkney, tells the story of its cultural and religious significance, whilst Orkney’s many active archaeological sites bring new insights every year. Regardless of whether you have a good knowledge of Neolithic history, a visit to Orkney will almost certainly awaken an interest in the lives and culture of the people who inhabited these islands thousands of years ago. On the west coast of the Mainland, Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar, the Standing
Stones of Stenness and Maeshowe make up the World Heritage Site, the Heart of Neolithic Orkney. These are the jewels in the crown, but the Orcadian landscape is dotted with archaeological sites, settlements and monuments that together tell a story of the lives of the people who first settled in

Orkney, cultivating the land and enjoying the fruits of the sea. Skara Brae, considered to be the best preserved Neolithic village in Northern Europe lies nestled into the landscape on the breathtakingly beautiful Bay of Skaill. The village lay completely hidden under layers of sand for over 4,000 years.
Standing stones are a feature of the Orcadian landscape, with The Ring of Brodgar dominating the West Mainland. This iconic ring, standing as it does in a natural amphitheatre, is thought to have been a place of ritual and ceremony. Built between 2,500 and 2,000 BC, the huge circle today has 27 stones remaining, and the sheer scale and beauty cannot fail to take your breath away. Thought to be the world’s earliest standing stone circle, the Standing Stones of Stenness was probably in use as a ceremonial site around 3,100 BC. Smaller than its Brodgar neighbour, with only three of the 12 huge stones
originally making up the circle, still standing. The tomb of Maeshowe, standing towards the end of the Brodgar peninsula is the finest Neolithic burial chamber in Northern Europe. Constructed almost 5,000 years ago, this vast structure is aligned so that the setting sun illuminates the interior chamber around the winter solstice. We can only wonder at this powerful symbolism and the beliefs that drove its creation. The Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site represents
only a fraction of the vast array of prehistoric sites from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age that can be found across Orkney. From the Neolithic farmstead, the Knap of Howar on the island of Papa Westray, built about 3,500 BC, to the Stone of Setter, Orkney’s most iconic standing stone, on Eday and the Iron Age settlement, the Broch of Burrian, on North Ronaldsay, each corner of Orkney offers a glimpse into its rich heritage and into the lives of the people who made it their home, up to five thousand years ago.

The Ness of Brodgar, an active archaeological site stretching over six acres, featured in the BBC series, Britain’s Ancient Capital: Secrets of Orkney. Open during July and August, this site is changing our understanding of the Neolithic period and the ways of its people.
WARTIME ORKNEY
MEMORIES OF CONFLICT AND HEROISM Reminders of the crucial part that Orkney played in both world wars are dotted across the landscape. The archipelago’s strategic location made it of vital significance for both air and sea forces. Scapa Flow, one of the finest natural anchorages in the world, was home to the British Home Fleet throughout the First and Second World Wars. It witnessed the loss of many lives, including 834 with the sinking of HMS Royal Oak when the British battleship was torpedoed by a German submarine in 1939. Today, a tour of the Ness Battery - just outside Stromness - shows its
significance in defending Scapa Flow, and what life was like for its gun operators. Scapa Flow Visitor Centre and Museum in Hoy is closed for major renovations until 2021, but visitors can enjoy the exhibition in the Hoy Hotel, just half a mile from the ferry terminal in Lyness. From April - October there are regular guided walks around the remains of the former naval base. Booking is advised.

Orkney’s most visited wartime landmark, the Italian Chapel, was created on the island of Lamb Holm by Italian prisoners of war, brought to Orkney to work on the construction of the Churchill Barriers in 1942. The Italians created the now world famous place of worship from two Nissen huts, joined together. Led by Domenico Chiocchetti, the chapel is a truly remarkable achievement, lovingly crafted from the most basic of materials.
WARTIME ORKNEY A RICH HISTORY
The Kitchener and HMS Hampshire Memorial stands austere against the skyline at Marwick Head on the West Mainland. Erected in 1926, it commemorates the sinking of HMS Hampshire in 1916 with the loss of more than 650 lives, including the then Minister of War, Lord Kitchener. Orkney’s airspace was of equal significance to its waters in the Second World War when four military airfields were in operation. Today HMS Tern, with its distinctive control tower is open to visitors thanks to the work of the Birsay Heritage Trust.

EXPLORE A LITTLE MORE The perfect place to go island-hopping, Orkney is made up of around 70 islands, just 16 of which are inhabited. Each of these isles has its own traditions and way of life, and you can be sure of a warm Orkney welcome wherever you venture. Away from the Mainland, the islands offer a rich variety of landscapes and seascapes, creating wonderful wildlife habitats, with each season offering a plethora of opportunities to enjoy native and visiting species. THE MAINLAND AND LINKED SOUTH ISLES The Mainland is the starting point for many Orkney adventures. The 12th Century St Magnus Cathedral and The Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site are “must-sees”.
A drive across the Churchill Barriers brings you to the Italian Chapel and the Neolithic Tomb of The Eagles, perched on the cliffs of South Ronaldsay. HOY, GRAEMSAY & FLOTTA Orkney’s second largest island, Hoy, is perhaps most famous for its red sandstone sea stack The Old Man of Hoy, but it also boasts the stunning Rackwick beach. The green isle of Graemsay is almost traffic free, with only 30 residents. Flotta, lying as it does at the gateway to Scapa Flow, played
a significant part in both World Wars, and many military enthusiasts visit its historic sites. SHAPINSAY Just a 25 minute ferry crossing from Kirkwall, this green and fertile island is home to the RSPB reserve of Mill Dam - a must for those seeking to catch a glimpse of rare species, including the hen harrier. Balfour Castle and village with its many beautiful views, can be found in Shapinsay. It’s a lovely island to stroll or cycle around.

WESTRAY & PAPA WESTRAY With a rich choice of historical remains, from the world renowned Westray Wife (Scotland’s only Neolithic representation of human form) to the 16th Century Noltland Castle, the Pierowall Heritage Centre tells the tale of the island’s history. Wildlife abounds on Westray, with Noup Head RSPB Reserve & Lighthouse on the
northernmost tip offering spectacular birdlife. The world’s shortest scheduled flight will take you to Papa Westray, where the Knap of Howar, North West Europe’s oldest standing house, was inhabited around 6,000 years ago. SANDAY With stunning white sandy beaches, an abundance of wildlife and archaeological sites, Sanday is the largest of Orkney’s North Isles. The Heritage Centre gives a fascinating insight into the island’s past with exhibits including the Appiehouse Stone, a Pictish Christian symbol stone found in a nearby house during renovation work. EDAY The heart of the North Isles, Eday is just eight miles long. Its Heritage Walk encompasses prehistoric sites including the Vinquoy chambered tomb and
The Stone of Setter - probably the finest stone of its type in Orkney. STRONSAY With its highest point at just 47 metres above sea level, it’s easy to get around Stronsay on foot or bike. Thousands of Grey seal pups can be seen throughout October and November. The island’s east coast is home to the dramatic Vat of Kirbister, Orkney’s most stunning natural sea arch and the cliff coast is ideal for spotting puffins and other seabirds. NORTH RONALDSAY The most northerly of Orkney’s outer isles, many old traditions still prevail here. North Ronaldsay supports a rich and diverse population of wildflowers, mammals and birds including the island’s hardy breed of sheep that feed on the coastal seaweed, giving their meat a distinctive, gamey flavour.

ROUSAY, EGILSAY & WYRE Even by Orkney standards, these three islands have an abundance of ancient remains. Rousay, ‘The Egypt of the North’, contains some of the best preserved ancient monuments in Northern Europe. Egilsay, where St Magnus was martyred, was an important destination for pilgrims, and today St Magnus Kirk is a rare example of the round towered churches built by the Vikings. The Viking stronghold, known as “Cubbie Roo’s Castle”on Wyre, built in 1145 by the great Kolbein Hruga, is a reminder of Orkney’s turbulent Viking past.

On land, walking and cycling will get you closer to nature and allow you to really take in the beauty of the landscape as well as Orkney’s diverse and beautiful flora and fauna. Orkney’s clear waters are tantalising, with plentiful opportunities for sea-kayaking, surfing and windsurfing. From the earliest settlers, sailing has always been part of the Orkney lifestyle, and today sailors come to enjoy the excellent facilities and conditions around the islands. The summer racing season is a must for those who enjoy the added thrill of competition. Below the waves, Orkney waters offer experienced divers exciting locations to explore, including sunken wartime ships in Scapa Flow. Orkney’s fishing has attracted anglers for generations - with both loch and sea fishing on offer. Popular with anglers of all ages and abilities, the island’s inland lochs are well stocked with brown trout,

and also promise a great day’s sport. Over 100 miles of sea trout shoreline is here to enjoy, or why not hire a boat and benefit from the skills and knowledge of a local skipper to ensure you get the very best from a day at sea? With red sandstone the most prevalent rock, and towering sea stacks, including temptations like the Old Man of Hoy, experienced climbers may consider taking on Orkney’s challenges, and for windsurfers, kite surfers and power kiters, Orkney is the perfect playground. Perhaps more leisurely but no less competitive, Orkney’s five golf courses offer a challenge for even the lowest handicappers. On the Mainland, Kirkwall and Stromness each offer 18 hole courses. To complete the set, some island hopping is needed - with nine hole courses in truly stunning locations on the islands of South Ronaldsay, Westray and Sanday.

Orkney’s 600 miles of coastline, rich habitats and climate make it home to a multitude of wildlife, tempting visitors who want to catch a glimpse of native species, or those passing through on their incredible migratory journeys. Orkney’s wildlife calendar is filled all year round, from the early days of spring as vast colonies of seabirds start to congregate on the sea cliffs to nest and those that have wintered in Orkney’s temperate climes prepare to return north to the Arctic. Inland, spring brings frolicking lambs and boxing brown hares. Through the longer days of summer, seabirds including puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes and razorbills nurture their young while perched on the sea cliffs. Wetlands team with native wildflowers and wading birds, and the ancient moorlands are the natural habitat of short-eared owls, hen harriers and red-throated divers. Out to sea, dolphins, minke whales, orcas and even

basking sharks can sometimes be spotted, whilst Common seal pups are in evidence on coastal rocks and shallower waters. The very rare Scottish primrose (Primula scotica), can be found flowering on maritime heathland on Papa Westray, Westray, the Mainland and Hoy in May and July. Autumn in Orkney sees the arrival of thousands of migrating birds, from Barnacle geese and Whooper swans to Slavonian grebes. Out to sea, whales, porpoises and dolphins pass by en route to warmer waters, and with 15% of the world’s Grey seal pups born in Orkney, the pupping beaches are alive with activity. As days draw short, our night skies can be filled with dazzling displays of colour - the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. The temperate climate means that wetlands and moorlands remain home to many species of birds, with the hen harrier forming communal roosts at favourite sites on the Mainland.

Orkney’s farmers and Orcadian’s show off their best livestock and produce at the summers’ agricultural shows, with long-held traditions attracting locals and visitors alike. Orkney’s beef, lamb and dairy produce is of such quality that they have achieved protected name status, under European law. Agricultural shows are important dates in the community calendar, with fierce competition for prizes. The shows are also great spectacles and offers visitors the chance to see quality livestock while sampling
local produce and enjoying exhibits of arts and crafts along with local entertainment and other attractions. Shows are held in Sanday, the East Mainland, Shapinsay, South Ronaldsay and Burray and Dounby, with competition culminating at the Orkney County Show, held in Kirkwall, the highlight of the farming calendar, attracting thousands of visitors every August.

Mild days mix with chillier ones, so be prepared with suitable clothing to enjoy the outdoors whatever the weather. It’s a great time to see rare birds and even migrating whales and porpoise. October is the time to spot adorable Grey seal pups, particularly at the
Brough of Birsay and the islands of South Ronaldsay, Rousay and the outer isles. Orkney’s vast skies are incredible at any time of the year, but now spectacular sunsets offer a breathtaking end to the day. On particularly clear nights, Orkney is one of the best places in the UK to see the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. This amazing spectacle is caused by charged particles accelerated into the Earth’s upper atmosphere along magnetic field lines. Those lucky enough to visit in mid-winter can see how Orkney’s Neolithic inhabitants built the vast
burial tomb of Maeshowe. This truly remarkable feat of engineering was designed so that around the winter solstice, shafts of light from the setting sun descend a narrow entrance passage, illuminating the main chamber. Enjoying the festive period in Orkney is a delight. Christmas and New Year celebrations include ‘The Ba’, a mass street ball game held in Kirkwall, attracting a huge and noisy crowd, and the Hogmanay Stromness Yule Log Pull. As winter gives way to the first signs of spring, the Orkney year starts over again, bringing new life to the fields, skies, seas and moorlands.

Held in May, the Orkney Folk Festival attracts a world-class line-up of artists, and visitors travel from far and wide to venues throughout Orkney. Also in May, the Orkney Nature Festival attracts wildlife enthusiasts to take part in a variety of events including snorkelling, photography and spectacular wildlife cruises.
After an 80-year absence, the Hogmanay Stromness Yule Log Pull is once again a popular annual event. Split roughly along an old town boundary, one team from the north of the town and one from the south battle to pull the yule log to their territory, cheered on by a lively crowd! Perhaps Orkney’s most unusual festival is North Ronaldsay Sheep Festival which begins in July. Launched in 2016, volunteers from across the globe come to the island to help with the annual task of maintaining and rebuilding the dykes that keep the sheep on the shore. The St Magnus International Festival, held in June, attracts orchestras, musicians, theatre and dance companies and writers from around the world, as the festival draws audiences to venues across the islands.
Stromness Shopping Week, one of Orkney’s longest established events, takes place in July. The week sees a programme of activities and celebrations enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. In September, the week-long Orkney International Science Festival draws visitors and presenters from across the world. September also sees music lovers arriving for Orkney’s Rock and Blues festivals, closely followed by the Storytelling Festival in October.
