STUDIO PRACTICE Statement of Intent Name Blog Address http://o-‐conlon1316sp.blogspot.co.uk/ Orlaith Conlon Date 19/10/15 Rationale For this module I will commit to delivering my best work with solid and rigorous conceptual development that is evident in my final outcomes. I want to refine my working practice to produce work faster, and I want to continue in exploring the tone of voice or authorship in my practice. I want explore applied illustration further by creating my own products in which I use illustration as a tool to help me bring life and uniqueness to a range. I am planning on designing small separate capsule ranges for retail for the market/audience of young mother/baby, party ware, home ware, DIY. Creating and designing products myself will be a challenge but I believe it will show my range of interests well in my portfolio. For this brief I also want to build on the character and narrative work from last year and have selected two briefs, which will enable me to develop this strand further. Themes / Subjects Themes: Fun/ Youth/ Bold Handcrafted/ Collectable/ Usable Narrative/ Character Subjects: Retail/ Product design. Handmade movement. Children’s book design and character creation. Products / Methods of Distribution Illustrated Children’s book possibly continued from my development last year. Will need advice on this. Paper party wear, designed with a specific event in mind e.g. unicorn party, divorce party, to be aimed at 20-‐35 age range of shoppers. To be sold in shops such as Colour’s May Vary, Fred Aldous, Paperchase Baby Bundles: Range of illustrated baby products using the digital skills developed from last year. Screen-‐printed products: Using the colleges faculties as much as possible to produce products which I can package and sell online or at art fairs so that when we leave I have a large volume of products to begin with.

Brief 1: Children’s Book/ Character/ Narrative
Pan Macmillan Children’s Book Prize
Deadline
Friday 8th May @ 5.30pm
Rationale:
I think this is my BIG KUHUNA BRIEF, ever since I was on the access course at LCA in 2012 I’ve been excited about this competition and I now finely feel equipped with the practical ability and confidence to really put my best into this brief. Brief 2: Deadline No Deadline Product & Packaging Tigerprint-‐ Gifted (Past Brief) Rationale: I’m very eager to make actual items and to photograph the resulting products in a professional manner. I want to retain a fun and silly vibe with this range and to have a super strong theme such as engagement party or even something seemingly arbitrary but kitsch such as TACO PARTY or UNICORN PARTY which will capture peoples imaginations. Range could be flat packed in a plastic wrap with a cardboard panel stamped for a display prong and include items to assemble such as party hat, pop up piñata, paper based games etc. Brief 3: Deadline 1st November Competition Brief 2015 Whittard’s Tea Caddy Rationale: This seems to be a simple straightforward brief to design a single tea caddy. Brief includes product dimensions, shape, net and also a suggested colour palette. This brief has two weeks left until the closing date that is more then enough and should be easy to complete alongside COP3 research and writing. Deadline Weekly Deadline Brief 4: Once a Week Brief
The Independent on Sunday
Rationale:
A self initiated brief to produce a small scamp for the Independent on Sunday, possibly for ‘Life as we know it’ column (1 image) or main articles if I have the time (1 plus image) Brief 5: Deadline Handcrafted Product Design & Production
Rationale:
I’ve been very interested in making soft toys/furnishing for the modern Mother and baby. After having some experience with digital printed products last year I want to invest more into creating products which can then curate into a collection and sell online or for sale or return in shops such as RAD Studio, Colours May Vary. A more in depth brief is needed ASAP Additional Project Proposals D&AD YCN RCA Ideas for Own Briefs: Shop Window Design, paper based? Monki Collaboration: Clothing Pattern Design & Unique Products, e.g. Lyniee Zulu Editorial: Oh Comely, Frankie, Little White Lies, Betty, Wrap, Okido, ANORAK
