• The holiday commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865, following the end of the Civil War

• Although President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had been issued on January 1, 1863, it took over two years for the news to reach Texas due to the lack of Union presence in the state during the Civil War

• Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, and announced General Order No 3, officially proclaiming the end of slavery in Texas.

• Juneteenth's name is a combination of "June" and "nineteenth ”

• The holiday is particularly significant in African American communities, as it represents the final liberation of enslaved people in the last Confederate state.

• Celebrations of Juneteenth often include parades, cookouts, family gatherings, music, dancing, and readings of the Emancipation Proclamation

• Juneteenth celebrations have been a tradition since the late 19th century, primarily in Texas, and have since spread across the United States

• On June 17, 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday in the United States when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law

The Delta Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc and its Hankins Johnson Education Foundation, Inc concluded another successful year of their Young Men of Distinction (YMOD) mentoring program with a heartwarming end-ofyear breakfast event on Saturday, July 1st, at the picturesque Mead Botanical Gardens in Winter Park, FL. The YMOD mentoring program, designed to guide and support young men in their personal and academic growth, has been making a positive difference in the lives of these young individuals for several years During the breakfast ceremony, the outstanding performers in the program were recognized for their commitment and hard work throughout the year. However, the highlight of the event was the awarding of scholarships to four exceptional high school seniors who demonstrated exemplary achievements and dedication to their academic pursuits.

Dyllon Houghton of East Ridge High School, Christopher Goodwin of Wekiva High School, Donnell Grimes of Ocoee High School, and Darraus Cooper of Jones High School were the well-deserved recipients of these prestigious scholarships

The Delta Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Hankins Johnson Education Foundation, Inc. extend their heartfelt gratitude to all the sponsors, partners, and supporters who made these scholarships possible Without their generous contributions, it would not have been possible to empower these young men on their educational journey.

Through their collective efforts, they aim to shape a brighter and more promising future, one scholarship at a time. The impact of mentorship and education is immeasurable, and the 2023 YMOD program has proven yet again that when a community comes together to uplift its youth, great things happen.

Lending Library Re-stocking

–Mar 2023: Recognizing the importance of continuously nurturing the love for reading among young students, the chapter embarked on a mission to restock the Lending Libraries established in 2021/22 at various Head Start locations in Orange County. Five days of active engagement involved visiting five head Start sites, including Callahan, Washington Shores ELC, Washington Shores Elementary, Hungerford, and Pine Hills The result was an impressive donation of 300 additional books, reinforcing the libraries' resources and impacting 375 students. This effort demonstrated the community's dedication to ensuring that children always have access to quality reading materials.

2023: While Head Start is a federally funded program, certain policies restrict students from taking home books purchased with federal funds. Understanding the void this creates in promoting literacy, the Delta Xi Lambda Chapter stepped up to create Lending Libraries in disadvantaged communities. An exemplary event was held at Lila Mitchell Head Start on April 4, 2023, with the participation of 75 students, 50 parents, teachers, politicians, and community leaders. The initiative donated 500 books,

72 sets of flashcards, and various other supplies, ensuring that these 75 students could check out books and take them home with an action plan that encouraged parent engagement. This powerful program promises to increase literacy rates and enhance kindergarten readiness in the community
