to me the first time I saw a robotic surgery being performed that it was a much more precise and elegant way of performing an operation, and so I put all of my energy into trying to master everything about the robot. At one point, I had done more robotic bariatric surgeries than anyone in the world, just because so few people were using the robot. As a bariatric surgeon, I have completed more than 6,000 bariatric surgeries and nearly 3,000 of those have been robotic. Additionally, the robot allowed me to specialize in more complex revisional surgeries, so I have strong experience in performing those as well.

Dr. Kim is most recognized for his role as an innovator and pioneer in the field of robotic bariatric surgery. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a prestigious John Motley Morehead Scholar and graduated with a degree in chemistry with distinction. He earned his medical degree, with honors, from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, where he also obtained his surgical training as an intern and resident. As a bariatric surgeon, Dr. Kim has performed over 6,000 surgeries, including the Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Duodenal Switch Procedure, Adjustable Gastric Band, and complex revisional surgeries. As a pioneer and a recognized global leader in robotic bariatric surgery, he developed a technique for performing a totally robotic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass that has been taught to other surgeons around the world. He has currently performed nearly 3,000 robotic bariatric surgeries including over 300 complex revisional surgeries He sat down for a Q&A on his development as a physician, his practice and his efforts to give back to the medical community.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass that has been taught globally. What led to its development, and why is this technique so important?

When I started learning to perform robotic bariatric surgery, it was done typically as a hybrid procedure where the robot was used for only portions of the procedure. Additionally, use of the robot took significantly longer than doing the procedure purely laparoscopically. I went into it determined I was going to transition to robotics and set three goals: I wanted to make sure the clinical outcomes were just as good, if not better, than laparoscopic bariatric surgery; I wanted to develop a technique to perform the entire case robotically; and I wanted to get the robotic operative times comparable to the laparoscopic operative times. Once I achieved a completely robotic approach to the most common bariatric surgery at the time, the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, it generated a lot of international attention, and I was invited to share my technique and outcomes data in meetings around the world. I was very methodical in my approach and spent a lot of time early on reviewing videos of my procedure to constantly improve what I was doing. When I started teaching my technique to others, it eliminated many aspects of the learning curve for them and facilitated the transition to robotic surgery.

? What drew you to the medical field? Dr. Kim: My parents moved our family to the United States from South Korea when I was a child, so my siblings and I could have better educational opportunities. My parents gave up everything to move to a country where they didn’t know anyone. From the very beginning, I always said I wanted to be a surgeon, because I wanted to maximize the opportunities that my parents gave me. I also knew I wanted to directly help people in a meaningful way.

? Why is it important to you to give back

? You started your career as a general

When I first started as a surgeon, one of the other physicians suggested I start doing bariatric surgery because of my technical skillset. I was shadowing a bariatric surgeon and talking to a patient who was a few months post-operation when she told me about the first time she could tie her shoes, and it made me realize there was so much more to people’s diseases and what we could do for them. Obesity doesn’t just affect an individual’s health; it affects their entire life in the most profound ways that physicians don’t always think about. Realizing the impact bariatric surgery can have on someone’s sense of self-worth, in addition to increasing longevity, is the moment I knew I was on the right path.

How has the use of robotics changed

? your practice?

I’ve been through two transitions in my career – the transition from open surgery to laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery and the transition to the use of robotics. When I was training, most complex surgeries were still done completely open. One of the things that intrigued me about bariatric surgery was that there was a relatively early adoption of laparoscopy, so when I started performing bariatric surgery in 2000, I learned to do them laparoscopically. Then eight years later, in 2008, I was first exposed to the robot, which I started using in 2009 – still very early in the adoption of robotics. It was very obvious

I believe the most important thing for all of us in medicine is patient care and optimal patient outcome. Much of what I know today is because I have had great surgeons mentor me and share their knowledge, skills and experience with me. I believe that surgeons are generous in sharing their knowledge and experience with others because they want to help ensure optimal patient outcomes. Because of my early involvement with the robot, I was given the chance to be a mentor to others. Not only have I traveled extensively to lecture and perform surgeries, but I have had surgeons from all over the world come to my operating room to watch and learn. I was always humbled by the effort they took to do this, and it was a privilege to be able to share my experience. I believe that robotics and the platform it represents, which is a digital interface between the surgeon and the patient, is the future of surgery. I have tried to maximize what I give back to the medical field in this specific area, not only through teaching others what I know, but also through publishing and through involvement in innovation and future product development. I collaborated with the leading robotic surgeons around the world in all areas of general surgery and edited one of the first comprehensive textbooks on the use of robotics in general surgery. Additionally, I have been very involved with the development of other robotic platforms as well as emerging platforms in computer learning and artificial intelligence.

? What misconceptions exist about obesity and bariatric surgery?

Everyone has a weight range that their body thinks is normal, and the body will do everything it can to defend that weight range. For those who suffer from the disease

Today, the ultimate goal is to move away from the idea of “illness” and embrace the concept of “wellness.” While we strive to take care of ourselves physically, seek medical care, take supplements, exercise, or even rest, it is just as important to place the same emphasis on mental and emotional wellness. The shift in terminology from "mental illness" toward "Behavioral Health" can offer a more accessible pathway for people to reach out for support

As we have seen recently with athletes and celebrities, the stigma around mental illness is shifting, but it is still one of the most significant reasons people don't get the help they need.

Behavioral health services, obstacles to care and increasing wellness

Public and self-stigma refer to how society judges and holds negative attitudes about those in need of mental health support and how we internalize shame about our conditions. People have long believed that mental illness represents a weakness of the mind or a fundamental character flaw. These beliefs have created long-standing obstacles that prevent people from seeking the help they need to overcome suffering and improve their condition.

The words "mental illness" reflect the idea that one must be unstable before getting help. Behavioral Health describes the connection between the health and well-being of the body and mind. It encompasses actions, coping skills, daily living skills, and their impact on one's ability

to function, emotional and mental state, relationships, life satisfaction, achievement of goals, and overall wellness. While mental health is part of this model, the Behavioral Health model is more comprehensive and focuses on more aspects of overall wellness. The statistics vary, but approximately 25 percent of all adults experience some form of mental illness in their lifetime, and we also know that many more suffer without ever having a diagnosis. However, 100 percent of all people can benefit from Behavioral Health Services. These services include counseling, coaching, support groups, psychotherapy, psychiatry, mentoring, mindfulness, spiritual support, testing and diagnosis, and so much more. The human condition is both complicated and straightforward. We all have similar experiences that create stress, loss, joy, anger, excitement, etc. We all have biological needs and want some level of connection. But how we navigate the challenges and disappointments that show up in our lives depends on our genetics and what skills we learn. Behav-

So, what gets in the way? • Knowledge/Education – Many people misunderstand the meaning, process, and benefit of Behavioral Health Services. We all must talk about the benefits of these services to our patients whenever we can and before it is evident that the services are needed. • Medication Equation – When prescribing medications for patients struggling with depression or anxiety, it is essential to remember they often reject any Behavioral Health Support once they start feeling better. However, if they do not learn new coping skills, then they never truly learn to manage stress in their lives and will likely be back for more mediation. So, when prescribing also refer for counseling.

• Missing the Signs – Patient frequently underreport their symptoms and conditions to appear better than they are. This phenomenon can cause us not to offer support until our patients are in crisis. If they have a condition or experience that can impact emotional wellbeing refer the for counseling.

Caregivers Help: “Caregivers don't have time to focus on their own needs. It's essential to have someone who can listen to you, so I will refer you to a support group.”

• Affordability/Policy Limitations – While some insurances do not cover Behavioral Health Services; most do, thanks to the Mental Health Parity Act. Refer your patients to community health programs if they do not have insurance that covers these services.

• Culturally Competent Care – Many cultures perpetuate the stigmas associated with seeking help. Individuals who consider seeking help often have to overcome those beliefs and want to relate to a counselor who can understand their struggles from a cultural, racial, ethnic, religious, etc. perspective. Diversity exists in the Behavioral Health field, encourage people to keep searching for the right counselor, but also discuss that people outside of their background may have exactly what they need too.

The benefits of Behavioral Health services are innumerous and include resolving symptoms of depression, anxiety, worry, and panic, regulating emotions, and improving functioning. It can decrease demanding and high need patient distress and improve communication and self-care skills. Additional treatment components include helping patients with processing and learning to live with grief and loss, developing coping skills, developing wellness routines, and overcoming obstacles to navigate challenges better. We all must discuss the importance of mental

Medical Condition: “Did you know people with (diabetes) are more likely to feel depressed sometimes? I like my patients to talk to someone about those feelings to promote overall wellness. I am going to refer you to counseling.”

Isolation: A lot of people feel isolated when they are experiencing (chronic pain); it is helpful to have someone you can connect to and share your challenges with. I am going to refer you to a counselor. Prescribing Psychotropics: When I prescribe (psychotropic medication), I always ask my patients to participate in counseling to help them learn coping skills to get the best effects. Five AdventHealth physicians and the scientific director of the AdventHealth Translational Research Institute are featured in a study by Stanford University. Published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS Biology, the comprehensive list analyzed research data from the mid-1990s through to 2019, covering millions of scientists in all fields of study, and identified the top scientists by calculating how often their work is cited over the course of their careers. The following AdventHealth clinical leaders are featured among the nearly 160,000 listed experts:

Goodpaster investigates the pathophysiology of human aging, obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes, as well as the biological mechanisms underlying the health benefits of exercise. HHS Issues Revised Notice of Reporting Requirements and Reporting Timeline for Recipients of Provider Relief Fund Payments BY DOMENIC SEGALLA

On Friday, June 11, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) finally released the revised reporting requirements for recipients of Provider Relief Fund (PRF) payments.

The revised reporting requirements will be applicable to providers who received one or more payments exceeding, in the aggregate, $10,000 during a single Payment Received Period from the PRF General Distributions, Targeted Distributions, and/ or Skilled Nursing Facility and Nursing Home Infection Control Distributions. The PRF portal is open, as of July 1, and providers can begin their applicable reporting. The below new reporting deadlines and use of funds deadlines, are based on receipt date of each of your specific PRF dollars (many received more than one). Providers that did receive one or more payments during a Payment Received Period outlined below are required to report in the Reporting Time Period associated with the date in which they received payments that exceed $10,000 in aggregate.

Just like you have to feed, take care of and maintain your body in order to maintain your overall health, the same will need to be done with your flooring after it’s installed. Of course, just like different types of bodies require different levels of maintenance, depending on your flooring selection and your standard of ‘healthy,’ your flooring will too.

Why wouldn’t you want to go maintenance free? Well, with no way to revamp the flooring, it will never look as good as the first day it is installed. Floors that require maintenance give us a chance to bring new life to them without replacing them completely.

Cleaning Does not Equal Maintenance

Clean Floors Often Require More Maintenance

This can be one of the most difficult things for new floor owners to wrap their heads around. When you choose a product, you’ll want to check the manufacturer’s warranty and product specifications to ensure that you are aware of their recommended cleaning AND maintenance routines. While most customers focus on how products can be cleaned, what they can be cleaned with and how often they should be cleaned – they rarely ask about maintenance. I understand most people don’t work with flooring on a daily basis, so let’s compare this to something we all know fairly well – a car. You just purchased a brand new car off the lot, got the color you wanted, leather interior, the whole shebang. After the first month of owning that car, I bet you’ve given it a wash or two and it’s still looking

beautiful. But even if you wash that car every week, in a year or less, it’s still going to need an oil change and new windshield wipers; and the same goes for you floors! Even if you keep them as clean as can be, they will still need to be maintained. In fact, products that are cleaned more often tend to require more maintenance. That said, if you are looking for a maintenance free floor, that’s something you can shoot for. There are

When you think of a clean and sterile environment you probably think of bright, light and shiny surfaces with crisp corners and minimal detail. After all, polished, smooth surfaces do tend to hold on less to dirt and be easier to clean in comparison to matte, rough surfaces – even if the product/material is technically nonporous. That said, shiny and reflective surfaces often require the most amount of maintenance and upkeep simply because dirt and imperfections tend to be easier to see on shiny surfaces (think of how noticeable a dirty mirror is in a public restroom). A great example of a floor that’s easy to clean but a little more difficult to maintain is anything with a wax polish or site-applied finish on it like VCT – also known as vinyl composition tile. Think of the flooring in a Publix Supermarket – white, bright, almost always clean looking because they’re fortunate enough to have the downtime to maintain it properly. And although some may think a waxed floor is wonderful because it can be brought back to life by buffing and re-waxing, others may see buffing and waxing as a time-consuming requirement they’d prefer to avoid if at-all possible.

Clean Floors Show Dirt A popular misconception is that to have a clean floor the best thing you can do is choose a product that hides dirt. My opinion? There’s nothing worse than a mess you can’t see. If the floor doesn’t show the dirt, how will we know to clean it? Choosing a floor with heavy texture, color variation and with a low sheen will allow the dirt to hideaway and go unseen. But is that what you want? A clean looking floor and a clean feeling floor are not the same thing.

Maintaining the Floors in Your Home While you most likely won’t go with a waxed floor in your own home, there are types of flooring that you might choose a product that will require a bit more maintenance than others. Residentially, an oiled wood floor is the most beautiful product you can go with, but it comes with specific cleaning and maintenance requirements. That said, not only does the oil enhance the natural grain and beauty of the wood, it offers a chance for reparability if any scratches or imperfections are created they tend to be very easy to hide with an oil floor. It allows them to get to know you through your site, your branding, and your content. It’s the beginning of their experience with you.

Anyone can buy a domain, set up a WordPress template, and put some words on it. But how do you know you are doing it correctly and effectively? You do it by using fundamental website design principles. But why does my site need to look good or a specific way? Because website design is intentional with creating and developing the know, like, and trust factor throughout your site. Here are three ways that website design can do that for you.

Similarly, how you wouldn’t hire someone who comes into a job interview looking like they just rolled out of bed. Good website design gives a good first impression to potential customers and clients. And when they remember you, they come to you when they need help solving a problem, which is the ideal place to be. It’s what we call being “top of mind” and should be the goal for every marketing effort you make. A good impression through website design is strategic. Good website design helps your content and solutions resonate with your target audience because it was made with them in mind.

KNOW: Creates A Good Customer Experience When someone lands on your website, you want it to be easy to read and to find what they are looking for. Otherwise, they click off and go to another website. You want to keep that potential customer on your website for as long as possible. Part of website design is what we call “the flow of a site,” which means how the customer can get to where they need to go in 3 clicks or less. Most non-designers make the mistake of making the user go through page after page before they find what they are looking for. This

Another big way is to build authority by means of a blog. The design can make or break your blog. If it’s too hard to read or hard to find what they are looking for, they will never come back. But having everything you need to demonstrate and present your authority and good reputation is built into a good website design. There are many other ways to push your potential customers through the know, like, and trust thresholds on and outside of your website. It is meant to work together, where your website is a cog of a much larger machine. But a good website is one of the big cogs, which needs to be deliberately designed and placed to function with the rest of the moving parts. Website design is an investment that you can make to create a good customer experience, a good impression, and a good way to build authority that will help you be the business your target customers know, like and trust which will ultimately lead to more conversions and more sales. Coming Soon – Full Throttle Emergency Speediatrics DAYTONA BEACH – Renovations are under way on our Halifax Health Acute Care Pediatric Unit. A comprehensive pediatric emergency program will be launched in the fall of 2021, providing specialized emergency care with a seamless transition of care to pediatric acute care, for the safety and oversight of our pediatric patients in Volusia and Flagler Counties. Halifax Health has reimagined the entire way children are cared for in the Emergency Department and the hospital. Every child who comes to Halifax Health Emergency Department in Daytona Beach, will be seen by a board-certified pediatric specialist – seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. “By redesigning the pediatric unit so that children being seen in the Emergency Department as well as children who are hospitalized, can be cared for on opposite sides of the same unit, means that specially trained pediatric staff can be shared by both units,” said Dr. Steven Viel, Medical Director, Emergency Services. Dr. Viel added “No matter what time of day, or what day of the week your child needs us, we will have a specialized team of doctors and nurses specifically trained in pediatric emergency medicine to care for children. We are here for your family.” Any children in need of emergency care will be brought in through the existing emergency department entrance and assessed by specialized nursing staff to ensure they are safe to be escorted directly to our acute care pediatric unit, the Halifax Health – Betty Jane France Center for Pediatrics, located on the 6th floor of the Fountain Building. Children needing immediate care prior to being escorted to the pediatric unit will be taken to a dedicated room in the main emergency department first, where they will be met by both our emergency physician and pediatric team. Children being sent in for admission by their pediatrician or family physician can bypass the main emergency department and go directly to the pediatric unit on the 6th floor. Halifax Health offers the area’s only level III Neonatal ICU, the area’s only child and adolescent behavioral services, and now the only Acute Care Pediatric Unit with 24-hour a day pediatrics specialists.
