We are thrilled to enter a new season at Orlando Repertory Theatre (Orlando REP) as we continue evolving the essential work that we do, work that we feel is vital and necessary for creating a stronger community. We believe exposure to and participation in theatre and the arts can build a more civil and just community, a healthier community, and a much more imaginative community. We love telling and sharing stories and feel that much can be learned from stories through the incredibly strong platform of theatre. Each show or project is anchored by story, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. Using that metaphor, looking under the water line, you will discover a more complex design. We think about the work we do here (productions, classes, community projects, events, and more) through the multiple lenses: health and wellness, literacy and education, and imagination and creativity. The work we do at Orlando REP strengthens and supports mental health and emotional intelligence. How? By focusing on stories that seek to build the whole human being. The projects and shows we do inherently instill an appreciation for other peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stories and journeys and model behaviors, both healthy and unhealthy, so that young people in the audience can recognize the difference. Being a theatre for family and young audiences, the majority of our projects are told or seen from the vantage point of a young person. It is important for young people to see themselves represented. Just as important for character building is seeing characters or situations that are not liked- the purpose of those characters/situations is to juxtapose them with positive modeled behaviors, so that lessons are learned. It is important to see characters or cultures that are not like us as well, to see how universal our human experiences are. By seeing or participating in this type of theatre, the traits of empathy, confidence, and acceptance are being stoked.

Theatre can help young people see how they can fit into the world and how they can make it a better place. Orlando REP supports literacy, pre-literacy, and education skills through encouraging family reading time. Each production is accompanied by a resource guide which includes recommended reading, thematic discussion questions, and related activities that support state and national curriculum standards. We have related books available in our lobbies. Copious studies show that learning through the arts helps to retain knowledge and increase understanding. In our productions, classes, and other projects, life skills such as collaboration, etiquette, and social skills are modeled and learned through theatre. In addition to that work, Orlando REP works directly with local educators on enhancing instruction of non-arts subjects by utilizing arts integration techniques. We also focus on early childhood education and dual language classrooms. Theatre is a tool that can be implemented broadly. Imagination and creativity are the traits that make us most human and by seeing and participating in the programming here at Orlando REP, the fires of wonder and inspiration are sparked. As our world is increasingly focused on standardized tests, we must pay attention to creative thinking, so that we continue to develop problem-solvers, inventors, and innovators- those that think outside the box. Theatre encourages improvisational thinking and assists in developing your unique voice. At Orlando REP, we create a safe space for young people to explore choices, a space where it is okay to try and not succeed, assessing what is needed for success, and trying again. Resiliency and grit are developed as young people flex their creative muscles in our programs. We believe theatre develops the important skills necessary for a full life. Orlando REP exists to provide inspiring and exciting artistic experiences for young people and families. We believe theatre can bridge gaps, theatre can change hearts, theatre can change minds, theatre can inspire compassion, theatre can provoke conversation, theatre can transform. LETTERS FROM ANNE AND MARTIN OCTOBER 6, 2019 Sunday at 3:30pm

This presentation supports the accompanying traveling exhibit at The Holocaust Memorial and Resource Center of Florida. “Let Me Be Myself: The Life Story of Anne Frank” was developed by the Anne Frank House and is sponsored in North America by the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect. This project is made possible by a grant from Duke Energy through United Arts of Central Florida. This performance brought to you by The Rotary Club of Maitland. This unique adaptation combines the iconic words of both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Anne Frank. Born during the same year, living on continents 5,000 miles apart, these historical figures shared parallel experiences living in the shadow of hatred and prejudice. This production uses their own words to illustrate the similarities between their stories. In this presentation, a derogatory racial epithet used against Dr. King is discussed.

PIP-SQUEAK: AN ANTI-BULLYING MAGIC SHOW JANUARY 18, 2020 Saturday at 2:00pm Because of his small size as a child, Tony was bullied in the cafeteria, in the gymnasium, on the playground, and generally anywhere there were no adults present. Now using comedy, amazing magic tricks, juggling, and a coat-rack loaded with costumes, Tony gently and humorously teaches children how to cope with being bullied and how to assist those being bullied.

Adapted by R.N. Sanberg; From the novel by L. M. Montgomery; Produced by special arrangement with Dramatic Publishing, Woodstock, Illinois Marilla and her brother Matthew request an orphan boy to help work their farm. They are mistakenly sent high-spirited red-head Anne Shirley. Knowing they are ill-equipped to raise a girl, Marilla attempts to send Anne back to the orphanage. With Matthew lobbying to keep Anne, Marilla ultimately agrees to let her stay at Green Gables. The trials and tribulations Marilla fears come to pass, but she and Matthew admit Anne is the best thing that ever happened to them, and Anne comes to understand she is a loved and worthwhile person. From the first published book in 1908 to the current NETFLIX series, the character of Anne Shirley endears herself to every generation.

Theatre for the Very Young is created specifically for young people, infant to 5-years-old, and is an interactive, multi-sensory experience that invites audience members to become part of telling a story through creative play. Join a pig named Avery and his friends on the farm as they explore what it means to fly through elements of play, discovery, whimsical movement, and a few surprises along the way! Our students are the world premiere cast and have a direct influence on the growth of the script, score, and story of this tale based on the popular children’s book Pickle Chiffon Pie. In the land of Bushelpeck, the king is known for his love of the cucumber-based dessert: pickle-chiffon pie. But when cucumbers are in short supply, and he’s struggling to find a suitable prince to marry his daughter, the king must think of creative solutions to make sure his kingdom has a “happily ever after!”

WRITES OF SPRING 2020: HOW CAN YOUR LIFE CHANGE IN JUST 5 MINUTES? This unique writing contest is designed to support literacy and promote creative expression among students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Top entries are compiled to create an original play using the words of the students. YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS FOR CHANGE 6TH - 8TH GRADE Now in its 7th year, Orlando REP is proud to host the Central Florida regional competition of Young Playwrights For Change. Regional winnersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; plays are featured in a play reading at Orlando REP, and the first place script is sent to the national competition hosted by the American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE). The mission of Young Playwrights for Change is to produce meaningful conversations that ripple across our nation to provoke change and discussions throughout classrooms, schools, and communities. TEEN PERSPECTIVES LAB AGES 13 - 18 Teen Perspectives Lab provides teens, ages 13 to 18, opportunities to work on theatre that reflects and challenges their unique perspective on the world. Students are asked to find purpose through performance by telling stories that resonate with their own lives or by creating theatre with empathy and attention to other types of audiences. Labs are offered throughout the 2019 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 2020 academic year. Through a partnership between Orlando REP, Orange County Public Schools (OCPS), and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., teachers and PRESENTED BY teaching artists build the skills and confidence necessary to incorporate theatre, music, art, and movement techniques across the curriculum.

EYEPLAY DUAL LANGUAGE PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM Orlando REP is committed to students of all ages, including early learners. EYEPlay is a professional development program designed for PRE-K teachers who learn how to use drama to enhance and develop pre-literacy skills with their students. PRESENTED BY This program is supported by the Helios Education Foundation in Partnership with Childsplay and Arizona State University.

FIELD TRIP PLUS Joining us for a field trip at Orlando REP is a rich experience, but it does not have to end there. Are you interested in pre- and postshow workshops for your students? Field Trip Plus workshops invite students to explore the show’s theme and are designed to address state academic standards.

FOR TEACHERS & STUDENTS YOUNG ARTISTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT Every season, we proudly display student artwork from local schools and organizations in our lobbies. Teachers work with students on artwork inspired by an Orlando REP production and its themes. Participating students and teachers get vouchers to attend the shows. PROGRAMS AT ORLANDO REP SCOUT WORKSHOPS These interactive theatre workshops accompany performances of Orlando REP’s season shows in order to explore the show’s themes more deeply. Participating Scouts (Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and American Heritage Girls) receive Orlando REP patches and a discount to attend the performance. This diverse set of programs invites youth from the community to participate in the arts. REP READERS STORY DRAMA Join us for an exciting Story Drama series at PRESENTED BY the Winter Park Public Library. Professional Teaching Artists from Orlando REP read books inspired by our theatre’s season and facilitate interactive workshops for children and families. These are free events. Each participating child will receive a voucher to attend a professional production at Orlando REP.
