State Street is lively and at any given time there is some celebration in the air. Outdoor cafes are everywhere, packed with fun and delicious food. It’s a kaleidoscope of shops, restaurants, and galleries. Funky cafes, juice bars and eateries with names like: Coffee Cat, Blenders in the Grass, the Habit Burger Grill. Feed your pet at the Three Dog Bakery. State Street is where all the people mill about. It’s the 60’s, 80’s and the now; young, old, children and their parents, hippies and executives. Catalina Island’s Tale of Two Towns

loridians have Key West, New Englanders have Nova Scotia and Californians have Catalina Island. Twenty-two miles off the coast of Southern California sits the plucky little playground only 76 square miles in size. From Catalina’s one squaremile city of Avalon to the minuscule town of Two Harbors, this haven is certain to put the wop back in your doo-wop. Catalina is both refined and rugged. Seizing the difference allows visitors to enjoy one town’s yin to the other’s yang. Thirty-five miles of zigzagging roads separate Catalina Island’s two towns. Avalon - the main drop-off point for visitors - is positioned on the southern end. The 3,500 residents throw open their polished, souvenir shop doors and cater to a surfeit of tourists. Cruise ship passengers dally on Crescent Avenue, mesmerized by the urban blend of quaint and commercial. Extracted from this city is a cluster of 150 residents who chose to live on the

West End of Catalina Island in Two Harbors. Raw landscape, plunging gorges, crags and coves provide the perfect opportunity to hike, mountain bike, fish or snorkel. Visitors are welcomed like family. One of only two, single-room schoolhouses in California resides in Two Harbors. Nine students from Kindergarten through 5th grade learn their ABC’s in this historic enclave. Life is uncomplicated here. In 1972, the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy was established as a nonprofit, private organization dedicated solely to the conservation and preservation of the island. The organization is responsible for the island’s plants, such as the St. Catherine’s Lace, and animals, such as the Beechey Squirrel; both indigenous to the area. More than 42,000 acres fall under the watchful eye of the conservancy. We have them to thank for Catalina Island’s beauty. Located on land that was originally a Spanish Grant, Bernardo has the distinction of being the oldest operating vineyard and winery in San Diego County. Founded in 1889, the innovative business survived prohibition by selling grapes and fresh grape juice. Vines over 100 years old produce grapes that ferment in 75 year-old redwood vats. Thirteen acres of vineyards and olive trees carpet this last vestige of open-land among a Rancho Bernardo development. The bounty of the vines produce wine vinegar, cold pressed oil and sweet, red “Vino de Rosario.” The tasting room is one of 12 unique structures that make up the Winery Village Shops. Café Merlot serves light fare, homemade trinkets decorate the facades of craft nooks, and a glass blower entertains visitors. The Rizzo family has succeeded at the undaunted task of keeping a winery prosperous through the generations.

career in 1988 at Fetzer Vineyards, and has perfected his talents at Thornton. Owners Jon, Sally and Steve Thornton provide a well-rounded experience when visiting the winery. Café Champagne accomplishes the task by offering gastronomic delights, which complement the quality varietals. Well deserved accolades are bestowed upon Chef Steve Pickell. Once a protégé of great chefs in Washington, DC, New York City and San Francisco, Pickell has now achieved Chef of the Year status by the California Restaurant Writer’s Association. The cafe is the pinnacle of four-star dining. Pickell has proved food can be elegant. Contemporary Fusion Cuisine is his forte. A troika of flavors zing brightly on your tongue - spicy, salty, sweet - as pan-seared Ahi and Brie en Croute melt in your mouth. Add live music to the event and the result is magnificence. Seven months of the year, Thornton’s 20 acre site hosts a Champagne Jazz concert series. April through October the Fountain Terrace is the venue for some of the worlds best musicians. This year will be the 16th annual, with guests such as David Benoit, Poncho Sanchez and Lee Ritenour. It’s no wonder 135,000 people visit Thornton annually.

Unpretentious elegance best describes the grandeur of this French-Style Chateau overlooking the rolling landscape of Temecula Valley. Thornton holds the alpha position in the multitude of surrounding wineries. The flowering tree-lined driveway is a precursor to the beauty that awaits. Opened in 1988, it is the only winery in Southern California that specializes in traditional Methode Champenoise Sparkling Wine/ Champagne - a traditional French method. Their portfolio of superlative bubbly has catapulted Thornton into the echelon of America’s highest award winner in this field. Hallway walls festooned with ribbons and medals attest to the achievement. Winemaker Don Reha is stellar at nurturing the temperamental fruits of the vine to perfection. His uninhibited passion allows him to try new vinification techniques, keeping attuned to what the public’s palate desires. A hands-on vintner, he lets his senses make the decisions, as opposed to numbers from a lab. He began his

outhern California has become a destination for wine lovers. No longer is it necessary to make the trek to Napa or Europe to experience impeccably produced varietals. San Diego and Riverside Counties have thrown their hats in the ring and are competing with the big boys, with great success, I might add. The wineries are as varied as their vintages; some casual and quaint, others expansive and elegant. Spend a weekend exploring a few of Temecula Valley’s 24 wineries. The nearby Temecula Creek Inn offers a wine country escape package, including deluxe accommodations, dinner and breakfast at the Temet Grill, as well as a day of wine tasting at five local estates, complete with a picnic lunch. One-day excursions discovering Ramona, Escondido or Carlsbad cellars are equally as fun. Many shuttles and limos are available. So, grab some bread, cheese, plus a few friends, and leave the driving to the pros while you taste the enologist’s ambrosia. Cheers!

The quintessential “young turk” of Temecula Valley, Nicholas Palumbo’s recent opening in 2002 makes him the new kid on the block. A new trend of “30 something” vintners are emerging in the area, breathing new life into the field. Considered a boutique winery due to its size, (1,500 cases per year) Palumbo likes to think of himself as an “artisanal” winery. The bottle is his canvas, grapes are his paint. His commitment is to red wines; no whites. Small lots are made from Estate vineyards, resulting in high quality varietals. The “Tre Fratelli” - Italian for Three Brothers - is named after his brothers who, Palumbo claims, help him drink the wine. Private dinners for up to 16 guests are offered in the tasting room. Epicurean treats such as grilled petit filet with caramelized onion mashed potatoes keep patrons coming back. Palumbo’s Mom lends a hand with large groups. The multiple generations are what gives this winery its delightful personality.

Count on HD Supply to bring you the latest technology to make communications easier. Using the most innovative technology available today, Motorola has improved on its XTN two-way radios with the introduction of the RDX series. Motorola’s rich heritage in product innovation, world-renowned quality and low cost of ownership makes the RDX series the right choice for your two-way communication needs.

In quality, features and finishes, Seasons brand of faucets is equivalent to our previous proprietary brand. Repair parts are interchangeable and match seamlessly to both the current line of Seasons faucets as well as last year’s proprietary brand.

Make specific plans about where your support crew will be along the race route and where they’ll meet you after the race. Trying to meet up with family and friends isn’t easy to do after a grueling 26.2-mile race.

r e l e a s e s m o r e t h a n j u s t s we a t

PACK A PAIR OF INEXPENSIVE SWEATS After you get dropped off at the starting line, you’ll still have an hour or two of waiting in the cold before the starting gun fires. Wear some inexpensive sweats that you wouldn’t mind leaving behind because there won’t be anywhere to stow gear right before you run. And don’t worry about littering. Marathon organizers collect all the discarded apparel and give it to charity.

MAKE YOUR WAY TOWARD THE MIDDLE Most city streets have a curved, slightly arched shape. The sloped sides of the road are ideal for drainage, but not so great for ankles. To ease joint stress and prevent injury, run as close to the flat, middle of the street as possible.

GET NOTICED While running a marathon, encouragement is priceless. Write your name on your shirt so spectators can cheer for you by name. It could be just the thing to get you through tough sections of the course.

SPECTATOR ROUTES 1. Take the R Train to any stop in Brooklyn along Fourth Ave. (77 TH Street, Bay Ridge Ave., 59 TH Street, 45TH Street, 36TH Street, 25TH Street, Prospect Ave., Fourth Ave./9TH Street, Union Street, or Pacific Street), which is roughly miles 3–8. Take the R Train back into Manhattan to 59TH Street/Lexington. Walk east to First Ave. (in the 60s) and view some of the excitement between miles 16 and 17. Walk west to Central Park to see participants complete mile 25. 2. Take the R Train to any stop in Brooklyn along Fourth Ave. which is roughly miles 3–8. Then take the R Train back into Manhattan to 59TH Street/Lexington. Transfer to the 6 Uptown Train to either 96TH, 103 RD, or 110TH Street. Walk east to First Ave. to see the runners come through miles 18 and 19. Walk west to Fifth Ave. to see participants complete miles 23 and 24. 3. Take the R Train to any stop in Brooklyn along Fourth Ave. Take the R Train back into Manhattan to 57 TH Street and Seventh Ave. Walk north to Central Park South to cheer on the runners as they head to the finish!

Start running. Keep running. Don’t worry, the race isn’t all bridges. Don’t look at your watch. Keep the faith. Hydrate. Remember, you paid good money to run. Enjoy the Bishop Laughlin band. Find a running partner. Make sure your partner isn’t an elite runner. Savor the downhill leg. Don’t eat blintzes while you run. You’re halfway home, woohoo! Pace yourself. Enjoy the Manhattan skyline. Feed off the raucous crowd. Ignore your aching legs. Watch out for banana peels. Don’t stop for pizza. Stop thinking about pizza. Imagine all the calories you’ve burned. Don’t window shop. Visualize the finish line. Take in the Central Park scenery. Listen to the cheers from the finish line. Stop running, you did it!

WORLD SERVICE

Sometimes a long journey is made shorter with a quick conversation, like the time one Cardmember’s son had a medical emergency while traveling overseas. I guided them on using their travel insurance to return home to seek medical help. So, their son was able to smile without fear. Now that’s building relationships for life.
