inspire science learning

for life.

dear friends THE ORLANDO SCIENCE CENTER is dedicated to inspiring science learning for life through hands-on engagement, inspiration and encouragement. Within these pages, you will learn about our efforts over the past year to help move the community forward and create stronger learners, better problem solvers, a trained tech workforce and happier families. Whether you experienced the Science Center during a family visit, school field trip, teacher professional development opportunity, special event or corporate function, you were engaged in an active exploration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) concepts. The flash of an explosion, the crackle of the Tesla Coil or the simple pleasure of time well spent together as a family all lead to something greater than ourselves. It’s that spark of inspiration that leads to discovery and innovation. That’s STEM learning in action and it leads to a brighter tomorrow. We’ve had some amazing successes over the past year. Some historic moments and record breaking achievements, but there’s still so much work to be done and a greater role we can play in the life of our community. We are ready for the challenge and invite you along for the ride. The future looks bright and it starts now. Sincerely,

JoAnn Newman President and CEO

Scott Wilson, Board Chair FY14 Partner, McGladrey

Y D O B E H T : S T N E S E R P T E E R SESAME ST “Sharing information about our special ty pediatric services at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children at the Scienterrific Saturday events, as part of the Sesame Street Presents: The Body exhibit, was a great opportunity to teach kids about their bodies and organs and how they work. We were able to bring in and share tools and tech nology used by physicians and medical staff and give kids the ability to touch, feel and see the diff erent items we use in the hospital every day. We were proud to be a sponsor of such an educationa l exhibit and excited to be able to come out and give back to our community. Kids and families had a great time and so did we!” – LAWRENCE SPACK, MD

red tails monument ON VETERANS DAY,

November 11, 2013, Orlando Science Center, Vision of Flight and the City of Orlando dedicated the first monument in the nation to honor the Red Tail pilots of the Tuskegee Airmen. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the U.S. Armed Forces. Of those 932 pilots, 355 were chosen

to make up the elite fighter group known as the Red Tails. They flew bomber escort over Europe, earning a very impressive combat record. This 15 foot tall monument recognizes the bravery, passion and sacrifice of the Red Tail pilots, and their example can inspire future generations to reach to the skies and realize that all things are

possible. Today, there are fewer than 35 surviving Red Tail pilots. The unveiling was attended by many local dignitaries, and even included six of the original Red Tail pilots. Originally conceived by Mike McKenzie, Vision of Flight President, Syd Levy, philanthropist and owner of United Trophy Manufacturing, Inc. made the monument possible.

OTRONICON

CITY OF ORLANDO

Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs joined Science Center President and CEO JoAnn Newman to officially launch Otronicon at Orlando Science Center. This year, Otronicon celebrated its ninth year with more than 12,400 attendees. The VIP event included a demonstration of the Ekso Bionic

Suit, which helped “test pilot” Sarah Anderson walk after losing the use of her legs in a car accident. New partners Microsoft and Sony joined organizations like Walt Disney World Resort, EA – Tiburon, Florida Hospital for Children, Lockheed Martin and the University of Central Florida, plus many other technology

leaders to explore Orlando’s impact on the worlds of entertainment, simulation, education, health care and more. Every year, Otronicon features largerthan-life video game experiences, state-of-the-art medical and military simulators, workshops taught by industry pros, and so much more!

Otronicon has the opportunity to inspire a child’s interest in science and tech careers through the appeal of video games, interactive technology and virtual reality. Funded in part by Orange County Government

Jurassic Ridge

MOST DINOSAUR exhibits

have a look-but-don’t-touch policy, but Jurassic Ridge encourages hands-on learning in the most fun of ways. Visitors become an honorary paleontologist and explore this fragile 540-square-foot excavation site to help Orlando Science Center discover unique fossils from the Jurassic period. Upon entering, budding paleontologists

don protective vests and pith helmets before they grab their excavation tools and get to work. Little diggers use brushes and more to unearth and learn about various fossils just like real paleontologists. Field books enhance the experience by showing where to dig and providing background information about the skeletons to be uncovered.

The result is a STEM-based learning experience along with make-believe fun! This exhibit was funded in part by The Chesley G. Magruder Foundation and Florida Space Grant Consortium.

l o o h c s e r p r e t n e c e c n ie c orlando s WITH A STEM curriculum

based on standards set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the Florida Department of Education, the Orlando Science Center Preschool provides a world-class learning facility and environment that identifies and

meets individual learning styles, while stimulating progression in science, math, literacy, music, art and motor development. In fact, Orlando Science Center Preschool recently received a 96 out of a possible 100 on the VPK Provider

“Our son has absolutely thrived in their classroom, his knowledge of science is amazing now. He has soaked it up like a sponge and the teachers make it fun. So happy with our experience.” – MAGGIE FINLEY

stem initiatives

STEM DAY AT THE CAPITOL On March 5, 2014, Orlando Science Center and partners converged in Tallahassee to facilitate discussion with state legislators and engage them in active participation of hands-on STEM activities. Florida Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera and several representatives discovered how collaboration between science centers, schools and industry are vital to filling the STEM pipeline with a comprehensive approach from cradle to career. Partners included Lockheed Martin, Florida State University’s National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Museum of Science and Industry (Tampa), STEM Sim Ex, FIRST and Team Orlando.

PROJECT AWESOME Project AWESOME (Alternative Water & Energy Supply; Observation, Methods & Education) includes classroom workshops designed to engage every 5th grade student in OUC’s service area. These 90-minute STEM-based workshops focus on: Renewable Energies and Water Conservation. Each workshop is aligned to the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) and academic benchmarks set forth by the Florida Department of Education.

ENGINEERING OUR FUTURE Engineering our Future reaches teachers and their K-5 students. The program combines Engineering is Elementary (EiE) curriculum with fundamental math and science lessons aligned to curricula already in place in public schools. EiE makes engineering relevant, fun and engaging for students by introducing them to children from a variety of cultures and backgrounds who are facing real world problems. This year Lockheed Martin sponsored Castle Creek Elementary’s entire second grade with this initiative.

DESTINATION STEM STEM FIELD TRIPS Most students decide whether they like science and math, or not, as early as third grade. Our STEM Field Trips engage students in fun, hands-on learning activities and include a series of engineering design challenges that take place through the Science Center. The field trips hone students’ critical thinking and problem solving skills in a setting that promotes collaboration, communication and creativity.

This 17-week, afterschool program engaged over 1,700 underserved students in hands-on, experiential activities focused on various STEM disciplines and career opportunities. Sponsored by Siemens and United Negro College Fund (UNCF).

SCIENCE LITERACY PROGRAM Our Science Literacy Program provides students with a solid foundation that strengthens their ability to pursue STEM careers through professional development and student enrichment. Since the program began in 2011, 4,414 students and teachers have been reached. Funding for this program has been provided by J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.

“The Orlando Science Center has really given my students very rich hands-on experiences! Along with the students, I have really enjoyed the time that the Science Center has spent with us. I know that their presence here has greatly enriched my students’ educational journeys.” – MRS. VANDERPOOL, EVANS HIGH SCHOOL

SCIENCE FOR ALL is an umbrella program that provides a variety of access

opportunities for underserved populations. More than 80,000 individuals have received free or reduced price Science Center experiences, discounted memberships, and full or partial camp scholarships as part of Science for All.
