COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT

MISSION MESSAGE Hello Friends, Thank you for joining us as we share some of the achievements and impacts Orlando Science Center has made on our community over the last year. We are proud to be part of an organization that continues to evolve with a focus on new opportunities for learning and discovery for all ages. We are dedicated to inspiring science learning for life and we live this mission by providing iconic learning experiences for students, teachers, families and individuals. We are passionate about instilling a sense of wonder and curiosity, regardless of age or background. As our science center grows, we are reaching out to provide our community with the resources and opportunities to become stronger and better. We excite people by showing them the tremendous potential waiting inside Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) concepts and careers. STEM is more than a buzzword to us. It’s about our future. It’s about instilling skills for success in our young people in order for them to fill tomorrow’s jobs. And Orlando Science Center can help fill that pipeline running from cradle to career. Informal learning like you find at our science center can lead to improved attitudes toward STEM subjects, increased STEM knowledge and higher likelihood for young people to graduate and pursue a STEM career. When you build a stronger bridge or use computer code to get a robot to perform a simple task, you are unlocking the future. These opportunities stimulate skills beneficial for all of us, but they are vital to this next generation as we help build a foundation for their future success. Last year, more than 570,000 were touched by the mission of the Science Center, including many for the first time thanks to our programs that offered accessibility to those in need. The efforts highlighted in these pages promote how we are moving our community forward by building more confident teachers through professional development, empowering parents as their child’s first teacher, creating opportunities to learn through play for our young people and showing adults that you’re never too old to learn something new. No one can engage the public in hands-on learning quite like we do. And it’s those efforts that are helping us build the future, one mind at a time.

Sincerely,

JoAnn Newman President & CEO

Michel Champagne Chair, Board of Trustees, FY 15-16

THE YEAR IN REVIEW SPECIAL EVENTS Special Events engaged guests in themed activities while promoting and raising $461,000 in support of the Science Center.

ENGAGING ADULTS Events like Science Night Live and exhibits like Fusion: A STEAM Gallery and the Crosby Observatory expanded our audience by reaching adults with compelling and casual science exploration.

GREATER ACCESS Sensory Sundays offered sensory-friendly experiences for families. The Science for All program provided greatly reduced admission and membership fees for individuals and families in need, including $3.00 admission to nearly 11,000 visitors with an Electronic Benefit Transfer card.

AMAZING EXHIBITS Mummies of the World, the nationally renowned exhibition, presented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see real mummies and discover the science of mummification. Science Park was reinvented and transformed into Kinetic Zone - with dynamic displays to explore the fundamentals of forces!

ADVANCEMENTS IN STEM LEARNING ORLANDO SCIENCE CENTER PRESCHOOL Our preschool is the premier STEM model that features an environment unmatched by any other preschool in Central Florida. During the 20152016 school year, the preschool program impacted 72 students.

SCIENCE SUMMER CAMPS The Orlando Science Center 2016 summer camps reached 4,000 children from preschool to 9th grade. That’s nearly 350 students each week!

SCIENCE COMPETITIONS Orlando Science Center Science Competitions encouraged students to pursue education in STEM fields. Competitions are available for students in grades K through 12.

ADVANCEMENTS IN STEM LEARNING

TEACHER TRAINING & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Orlando Science Center provided professional development workshops for pre-service and in-service teachers that emphasized hands-on, inquiry-based science techniques, including programs like Boston Museum of Science’s Engineering is Elementary (EiE), and Code.org.

STEM DAY AT THE CAPITOL This annual event advocates for the importance of STEM learning, facilitates discussion with state legislators by engaging them in active participation of hands-on STEM activities, and promotes the value of partnerships as a tool to inspire and encourage our youth to pursue STEM careers.

UNLOCK SCIENCE

Unlock Science with KidsTown and so much more!

KIDSTOWN The Unlock Science Campaign continues as we raised $5 million to complete new KidsTown, the first phase of a $30 million multi-phase plan to expand resources and renovate exhibits at Orlando Science Center. KidsTown promotes adult-child collaboration through iconic experiences, exciting discoveries and untold opportunities for creativity, collaboration and problem-solving. The renovations are all part of our ongoing efforts to expand programs and change lives by inspiring science learning for life. We are actively fundraising for the next two phases of the campaign: an expanded nature and environment exhibit and a new STEM Discovery Center.

NEW NATURE AND ENVIRONMENT AREA Plants and animals from across the globe will tell the story of our place in the world as visitors use virtual simulation technology to learn about issues like conservation and sustainability in this nearly 9,500 sq. ft. experience.

STEM DISCOVERY CENTER Featuring a 2,500 sq. ft. make-and-tinker exhibit and eight renovated classroom labs, this area will promote impactful STEM learning for students, families and teachers through hands-on creativity, state-of-the art technology and advanced tools like robotics, soldering irons and more.

Our campaign is gaining momentum and you will see more positive changes in the weeks, months and years to come.
