CO M MU NIT Y IM PAC T REPO RT FISCAL YEAR 2017
Dear Friends, What we do here matters. Our mission connects people to the amazing wonders of science and illuminates its potential to not only change lives, but the world itself. By lighting the spark of curiosity and engaging all ages in active learning and discovery, we are doing our part to make a brighter future. This year, we reached more than 627,000 people, making the Science Center the most popularly visited science center in the state. This growing audience, up 10% from the prior year, is the result of our focus on quality, customer service and accessibility. This year saw the premiere of a new and reimagined KidsTown. As our $35 million Unlock Science comprehensive campaign continues to fundraise, you’ll see even more changes coming soon. We are striving to create one of the best science centers in the nation, one that is relevant and resourceful. One that is ready for its role in growing tomorrow’s workforce today. And if we want a strong, diverse talent pool for STEM jobs, we know we must reach beyond traditional sources. Everyone needs access to the opportunities that we provide and the only way to do that is to eliminate barriers of entry. In FY17, more than 145,000 individuals experienced free or reduced price access. This number includes 31,000 participants in our Science for All walk-in program, which offers $3 admission to families with Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards. Programs like Science for All help us immerse new audiences in eye-opening, iconic experiences that illuminate the true wonder of science and incredible possibilities. Museums can serve as a convener for communities, bringing people of all backgrounds together with the common bond of learning. This dedication to access was one of the reasons the Science Center was chosen as one of 30 finalists for the prestigious National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for outstanding service to their community. Orlando was one of three science centers named and the only finalist from Florida. Over the last year, Orlando Science Center has been honored as Best Museum or Non-Theme Park Attraction by multiple publications, including Watermark, PLAYGROUND Magazine, Orlando Weekly and Orlando Magazine. Those accolades pale in comparison to seeing the joy of discovery in our visitor’s eyes during live science experiences. No one can do what we do when it comes to bringing science to life. Thank you for playing a part in our success. Sincerely,
JoAnn Newman, Jeff Buhler, Chair, President & CEO Board of Trustees, FY16-17

TOP STORIES CEO of the Year In her 8th year as CEO and President, JoAnn Newman was selected as one of Orlando Business Journals 2017 CEOs of the Year. Her remarkable leadership and dedication have transformed the Science Center and, with her guidance, we continue to be a driving force in ensuring our community’s prosperity.
NASA Funds STEM Satellites In partnership with the University of Central Florida, the Science Center has begun to develop mobile NASA-themed exhibits that provide STEM based educational activities for critically and chronically ill, hospital-bound children. The $1.2 million funding for this program will be implemented over the course of 5 years, across three children’s hospitals in Central Florida.

We were selected as one of 30 finalists for the nation’s highest honor awarded to museums and libraries from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Our nomination highlights the outstanding growth and performance that we have achieved over the past year, and the vital role we play in our community.
KidsTown Grand Opening The opening of the new KidsTown is the first major expansion to the Science Center since our building’s doors opened 20 years ago. The family-favorite exhibit for children ages 7 and under was an ambitious $5 million project that features 11,000 square feet of skill-based activities in seven one-of-a-kind zones.
SCIENCE FOR ALL Now is a time when 21st Century skills and advanced technology are beginning to have a great impact on education, the workforce and our daily lives. It has never been more important for organizations like the Science Center to make a sustained effort to break down cultural, logistical, and economic barriers. By doing so, we expand our reach to insure that our impact is as inclusive and diverse as the community that we serve. Orlando Science Center is committed to removing those hardships and strives to be a safe and welcoming place for all people to engage with informal science learning that stimulates curiosity and wonder. Through these efforts, the Science Center is broadening its reach and bonding with audiences that often miss out on cultural and informal learning experiences due to social, economic or cultural obstacles. We consider it to be especially important work to ensure Science For All.

reduced admission
In the last fiscal year: Free or reduced admission was given to 145,796 people which is nearly 25% of our total admission and 48% over the previous fiscal year. More than 30,000 individuals received $3 admission through our partnership with the national “Museums for All initiative. Membership scholarships were offered to qualifying families for only $25. OSC has been designated a Safe Place for victims of anti-LGBTQ+ crimes by the Orlando Police Department and recently made gender-neutral bathrooms available on all floors.
Quarterly Sensory Sunday events have offered opportunities for families to enjoy the Science Center in a more sensory-friendly environment with more light and quieter experiences. New KidsTown became the first permanent exhibit to have completely bilingual signage with more in development. New exhibits, such as those in Kinetic Zone and KidsTown, are being designed and constructed using universal design standards to enable interaction from learners of all physical abilities. Orlando Science Center continues to develop events and exhibits to appeal to all ages so that we can engage teens and adults in exploration and discovery as well as connect with young families.

An Ally & Mentor for Educators Educators can look to Orlando Science Center to provide them with additional training, resources and inspiration to help make science come alive in the classroom for their students. Pre-K – grade 12 educators benefit from programs that help them to diversify and develop their craft through handson trainings with increased STEM literacy skills. As life becomes even more technologically driven and competitive, our educators are going to need to be equipped with the curriculum, resources and understanding to guide their students into the future. Stronger, more confident educators standing on the foundation established in professional development workshops can impact generations of innovative problem solvers. Our extensive professional development programs include a wide range of offerings. From original curriculum to resources from national partners like Boston Museum of Science’s Engineering is Elementary program and Code.Org’s computer science education initiative.

Unlock Science Campaign Orlando Science Center has made tremendous progress over the last five years, but there is immense potential ahead. While the Unlock Science Campaign signals a complete refresh of all the physical exhibits, it also supports a strategic focus on how to best meet our community’s needs. It’s a massive fundraising and renovation effort to expand resources, improve experiences and remove barriers for entry. As the education and workforce landscapes shift with the changing times, it is up to organizations like Orlando Science Center to stay proactive and relevant to better serve our transitioning world.
THE BEGINNING In the fall of 2014, we kicked off our campaign by starting a lobby renovation project that would lay the groundwork and establish the foundation for the campaign and guest experience.
NEW KIDSTOWN By utilizing the new space created by the lobby renovation and renovating existing exhibit space with all new content, New KidsTown was able to premiere in Fall of 2016. It has been incredibly well received and instrumental in helping drive total attendance 10% higher than the previous year and push membership to over 11,000 households.
STEM DISCOVERY CENTER The next phase of the campaign is focused on renovating and updating seven learning labs with state of the art technology and establishing a hub for all the Science Center’s STEM initiatives both onsite and offsite.
“ Investing in the Science Center is investing in a gateway to our future ” THE FUTURE
MAKER SPACE FLIGHT LAB Also opening this fall is our brand new Flight Lab, which will introduce visitors to a state-of-the-art flight simulation lab that was made possible by funding from the Office of Naval Research.
Coming this spring, our new tinkering studio will empower visitors to learn new skills like 3D printing, laser cutting, soldering, and basic coding. It will also complement STEM Discovery Center offerings and be used for student training and teacher development.
As our campaign continues, it will further strengthen Orlando Science Center as a source for inspiration, imagination and education. Now is the time to invest in an effort that will generate long-term benefits for our community. We look forward to sharing the upcoming changes with you and invite you to be the key to unlock science for tomorrow’s problem solvers. To learn more, please contact development@oc.org
