COMM UNIT Y IMPACT REPORT

FISCAL YEAR 2021

Dear Friends, Orlando Science Center has always been a place to engage curious minds through experiences that help build important skills like critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. This pandemic has reminded us that science matters now more than ever. It helps us not only to better understand the world around us but provides skills to address the problems plaguing it. Our youth can save the world and science can help them do it. They will take humanity to Mars and beyond, address the dilemmas of world hunger and climate change and overcome the next global health crisis. Over the past year, we have dedicated ourselves to providing meaningful experiences that work in this new reality we are facing. Our team has created virtual learning opportunities, hybrid events, and activities for families to do at home while also adapting our visitor experience to a world of social distancing and capacity limits. We remained agile and continued to pivot in order to best serve you with valuable learning opportunities. Orlando Science Center is preparing for a brighter tomorrow by encouraging dreams in the next generation, instilling the skills to achieve them, and preparing them for jobs that don’t yet exist. As we look back on the challenges of the recent past, it is clear that we must inspire the next generation to be champions of science. We have an important job to do, all of us – educators, staff, volunteers, donors, members, community leaders – which is to come together to create an environment that supports creativity and learning. We must continue to feed a passion for knowing in our audience, no matter their age or background. Together, we can share how science helps solve our most complex issues and creates endless possibilities for knowledge, success, and hope.

Sincerely,

JoAnn Newman, President & CEO

Patrick Aland, Chair, Board of Trustees, FY20-21

YE AR IN RE VIE W COVID-19 CREATES CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

While this year has been filled with unprecedented economic, public safety, programmatic, and staffing challenges, Orlando Science Center has continued the vital work of serving our community by providing life-changing STEM education for all ages. During our three-month closure in spring of 2020, we developed a reopening plan with input from Orlando Health’s Business Ready initiative allowing us to safely reopen to the public on June 15, 2020. While we have always utilized high efficiency MERV 14 medical grade air filters throughout the facility, we also increased the percentage of outdoor air entering our building to as much as 100% depending on outdoor conditions. We also added bi-polar ionization and UV sanitizing to all air-handling units. Even our elevators were upgraded with increased exhaust and bi-polar ionization. Despite the uncertainty our industry has faced with extended closures and delayed openings, our team has continued to move forward. Orlando Science Center adapted, and by following our health and safety protocols we were able to host a blockbuster international exhibition, premiere original experiences, host events, and develop dynamic programming to meet the needs of students, families, and schools.

POMPEII: THE IMMORTAL CITY

The blockbuster exhibition Pompeii: The Immortal City was scheduled to premiere in Orlando in June 2020 thanks to the generous support of the Blockbuster Committee and the Orange County Arts and Cultural Affairs Office. Interest in the exhibit was high following the initial announcement in 2019 and gained momentum by early 2020. After Orlando Science Center temporarily closed to the public, our team worked closely with the exhibitor to reschedule. Through complex negotiations a premiere date was secured and Pompeii: The Immortal City was unveiled on October 26, 2020 for a 90-day engagement. An impressive 50,000 visitors attended this once-in-a-lifetime exhibit, many venturing out of their homes for the first time in several months. This majestic display of artwork, jewelry, architecture, mechanical devices and multimedia gave visitors a different perspective on this ancient city. One that included urban planning, central heating, running water and glassware. In partnership with the Orange County Arts and Cultural Affairs Office, we also provided funding for arts projects to promote and complement Pompeii: The Immortal City before and during the exhibit’s run. Eight local arts projects were selected by a panel of community leaders from an applicant pool of over two dozen. The selected arts programs ranged from large outdoor installations, art exhibits, live performances, films, a dining series, and more. These collaborations helped expand the exhibit’s reach and transform it into a community-wide celebration of science, art, and history.

NEW PARTNERSHIPS, NEW EXPERIENCES TINY GREEN HOME

Through a partnership with OUC and the City of Orlando, we built a 200-square-foot tiny home to help increase sustainability education and awareness in Central Florida. This mobile living lab offers interactive displays that educate visitors on energy and water conservation measures, sustainability rebates, vehicle electrification, renewables, composting, and food gardens. The home aims to inspire homeowners to take steps towards conservation in their own lives, such as utilizing smart thermostats, considering roof-top solar, and using rain barrels to collect and conserve water.

FOOD HEROES

Our new Food Heroes exhibit presented by Orlando Health invites guests to discover the people and educational institutions working hard to create a more equitable, sustainable, and healthy community-based food system, all in Central Florida. This engaging exhibit explores the interconnectedness of the food system and highlights those who are already working to make a positive impact around food insecurity and how we can get more people involved. Food Heroes highlights various food and agriculture careers, beyond farming, that are having a growing impact on the world.

4ROOTS CAFE

The 4Roots Cafe located at Orlando Science Center is a partnership with the 4R Restaurant Group, developed by John Rivers and his culinary team. We are proudly serving fresh, healthy menu items, sourcing as much produce as possible from local growers. The cafe offers a hybrid service approach of grab-and-go options and customizable sandwiches, flatbreads bowls, and salads. The dining experience combined with the Food Heroes exhibit explores how we can make food more sustainable and healthier for everyone. This entirely new concept combining dining and informal learning will feed both your body and your mind.

ADAPTING EVENTS, CONNECTING WITH YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Our Education team partners with educators to make science come alive for students. Orlando Science Center’s experienced educators and programming engages interest, sparks innovation, and inspires the pursuit of future careers in STEM. When the pandemic limited offsite and onsite school visits, our team pivoted to virtual platforms and created new hybrid offerings to engage students, whether they were at home or in the classroom. Our summer camp program adopted stringent health and safety protocols to safely provide diverse STEM experiences for a wide range of ages, from Pre-K to Grade 9. For many young people, camp was their first experience outside the house in months and caregivers were grateful for their children to be in a safe and educational space. Virtual camps were also developed to assist students who were unable to visit us in person.

KIDS NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM

During the summer of 2020, caregivers in our summer camp program shared their gratitude with us for providing a safe space for their children to learn and explore. Based on that success, we used the same guidelines and created activities to support a kids night at the museum. This event provides caregivers a stress and child- free evening while their children have an educational and entertaining experience at the Science Center. It won PLAYGROUND Magazine’s Editor’s Choice for Best New Kid’s Night Out Program during their annual Family Favorite awards.

OTRONICON

An annual celebration of our region’s simulation, technology, digital media, and gaming industries, Otronicon resides at the crossroads of inspiration and engagement. Since 2005, Otronicon has ignited curiosity in STEM careers, empowered collaboration between partners, and built excitement for what comes next, creating a rich environment for active STEM learning. During Presidents Day Weekend, Otronicon featured a hybrid approach, offering in-person and virtual STEM learning experiences. Onsite attendance was limited with advance ticketing, reduced capacities, and social distancing. Audiences online were engaged by an exclusive menu of offerings, including speakers and demonstrations. Otronicon’s vision of inspiring the future continued despite the challenges presented by the pandemic.

IM PACT N U M B ERS Since reopening in June 2020, creating a safe space for children and their families to explore, play, and be inspired by science has been our priority. The numbers shared have been greatly impacted by pandemic conditions, including our closure and reopening, which limited attendance for purposes of health and safety. While we are proud of what we have achieved in the last year and grateful to our team for helping us continue to move forward during these challenging times, we are excited by the possibilities of the future.

SCIENCE FOR ALL OUR IDEA PLAN

Systemic and cultural barriers supported by policies, practices, and programs developed without the benefit of a range of perspectives have historically limited who engages with museums and STEM. Orlando Science Center wants to be a place where all people feel safe, welcome, and empowered to learn and develop educational and career aspirations in STEM. We understand that inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) are vital for our community and our future STEM workforce.

Orlando Science Center is committed to understanding and overcoming systemic barriers experienced by underserved areas of our community. We are actively working to create policies, implement practices, and take actions that ensure every individual, especially those who are underrepresented in STEM fields, have access to high-quality STEM education and careers. Our IDEA plan will serve as our guide as we work towards building access to pathways in STEM for all members of our community. These efforts will help everyone more fully participate in building community prosperity and a better tomorrow for future generations.

STEM LEARNING FOR ALL

Developing a personal identity within STEM is a vital component to an individual’s choice to continue lifelong STEM education and pursuing careers in the field. Our work has the capability to change lives and create prosperity in our community, but there can be multiple barriers standing in the way of someone having a meaningful connection with STEM learning. Children may lack access to early positive experiences that provide hands-on exposure to STEM, may not know a STEM professional like them who can serve as a role model, or may be confused by the myriad of STEM fields. Socioeconomic realities, like poverty, can keep them from participating in STEM activities, leading to underperformance in these subjects. These disparities decrease an individual’s ability to build a robust foundation in STEM learning. Orlando Science Center is eliminating economic barriers through Science For All, our accessibility program that ensures individuals, families, and students with the greatest needs get access to highquality STEM learning through free and reduced-price admissions and discounted family memberships. Science For All also offers camp scholarships, and free or reducedprice admissions to Title I schools, youth groups, and groups serving those with disabilities or special needs. Individuals and families who receive free or reduced-price access account for nearly 25% of our total annual admissions.

Our organization must also we serve in our content, recognize that people who made major contributions

be representative of the communities staff, and volunteer leadership. We are underrepresented in STEM have that have often been overlooked.

Illuminating their contributions will help to spark new connections and ultimately provide inspiration for our audience, which includes the next generation of STEM innovators. We must empower our diverse community by serving, reflecting, and embracing all.
